It wasn’t late, per se, but it was definitely starting to get dark. Things were winding down with the hustle of bustle of everyone’s return to the Ranch and Nicki - well, Nicki had some other worries. Outside of the fact she was pretty adamant there was a snake in their midsts now, Ares was pretty much down and out and almost everyone had made it out by the skin on their teeth, she could feel herself winding up. Laying in the clinic wasn’t going to help. She thought maybe sitting by Ares’ bedside might do the trick but her ribs were pretty much screaming at her for sitting in that chair for too long and the longer she laid in her own thoughts the worse she started to feel.

So fuck it. Should she have probably waited to try and make her way out to Ike’s house? Yeah, probably. Hell, she almost didn’t make it. She was approaching the gate when David spotted her with the most confused faces she was sure he had ever made towards her. In fact, the man almost helped her back to the clinic but after she tried threatening (and failing) then pleading with him to help her to Ike’s house, he obliged. That was the only way she was going to make it out to him at this point. David helped her until she insisted she could walk the extra feet to his front door and David vanished back to the town while Nicki raised her arm, albeit gently, and knocked. “I know you hate surprise visitors but I’m hoping you’ll make an exception,” she added as she waited.

Nicki was amped and raring to go for round three. Her adrenaline was pumping through her veins, every sense on high alert for any sign of someone else coming around the corner to try their hand. She quite literally was seeing red. Every piece of her was vibrating with pure energy and Nicki needed to burn that energy one way or another. She was on the ride with no sign of wanting to jump off. Ike’s coaxing words managed to reach her ears and she turned her head towards him. Her grip on her crowbar was still like iron, her fingers welded to the metal of her weapon. She wasn’t quite ready to put it down. Not until she was sure that every last one of those cocksucking Sunface Cultist bastards were dead at her feet.

Ike was telling her that they were all dead. All except the kid, which really meant that not all of them were dead. That and the little shit could be running off to find more of their friends and bring them back to them. Good, let her. I’ll take all of them down. She was still breathing deeply and rapidly, the fuel still feeding the fire raging through her. The only thing that really started to extinguish it was the cold hand that had touched her and pulled her close as it ran up and down her back like a soft pet. Ike’s pet to soothe her and bring her back down before she jumped over the edge.

His words became more and more clear. His hand was like an anchor weighing her back down into the present. The bloodthirsty lioness was stalking back into her den and in her place, Nicki could feel the hollow hangover after riding her high. That was honestly the worst part about fighting - the withdrawal once it was all said and done with. If Nicki could ever say she was addicted to something, it was the adrenaline rush that came from jumping into life-or-death situations. It was the most intoxicating thrill. It took her all the way back to her racing days - the speed of her Persephone coursing through her veins, fueling her own engines that were revving up into the red. While her Persephone sat alone in the woods outside of Redwood, Nicki kept her alive in the way she jumped into her fights and her raids.

But Ike was right - they had work to do. Her grip finally loosened on her crowbar and she sighed as she slid it back into her sheathe. “Alright, Papi,” she sighed, her breathing getting back to a more reasonable, regular rhythm and the fire extinguished in her. For now, at least - the spark to reignite it was still waiting to get fanned back into a full-on flame. They got back to work, making it an easy job as she drove the forklift to get the wood onto the trucks. She casually reminded herself that this was mostly for a fucking beehouse and she reminded herself to confront Joel when they got back about this stupid beehouse. These bees better fucking shit gold or something.

But they got the trucks loaded up and Nicki climbed into the driver’s seat - because of course she was driving. She paused at first, though, as she glanced at Ike. “You better find us a place to stop on the way back because I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna be able to wait until we get to Redwood.” Her eyes traveled over him for a moment with that devilish look that normally spelled trouble - or fun, although to her, both were interchangeable. “Something tells me you won’t be able to either.” Her tongue ran along her lips before he settled into her seat and brought the truck back to life. And just like that, they were on the road back to Redwood.

"Easy there, girl." Ike knew from experience that it was decidedly not easy to get Nicki to slow her roll when she was high on berserker bloodlust. And he further knew that if he let Nicki go full-throttle -- or worse, if he encouraged her with all that he was capable of as well -- they'd get lost in it. There was a high that saturated your entire body after something like this, with the stink of fresh blood and cooling breath, and Ike didn't intend to replace one addiction with another.

And as much as all of the raiders came from dark places, carried the capability for immense violence and ruthlessness inside them, Ike didn't want that to become their hallmark. They lived with normal people. Good people, peaceful people. If they gave in endlessly to their baser instincts, the time would come when they didn't belong with those good people anymore.

"We got them all. Aside from the teenager, I'm sure we got 'em all, Nicki." Ike nodded out at the bodies, lying where they'd fallen in ungainly heaps. "These should never even have been in a fight. They wanted to kill us but they didn't even have the skill for it." And if they hadn't been part of a cult, one that believed in sacrificing other people and kids, Ike wouldn't have killed them. He would've offered them the chance to start afresh in Redwood, and pleaded their case in front of the Council.

Nicki, though. Nicki was still burning, so Ike reached over and pulled her close for a minute, stroking his hand down her back as she quivered and thrummed with pent-up energy that was in its last tails. She'd come down over the next half hour or so and then she'd want to fuck to get rid of the last of it before the emptiness set in, Nicki's eternal fear that she'd prove too much and nothing would ever satisfy her. Ike knew the pattern. They each had their own brand of damage and that -- that was Nicki's.

"We gotta get our real work done now, kid," he said. "There's a shit ton to get squared away onto that truck and I'm gonna need you to drive the forklift while I load on and off. We can spell if I get tired." He didn't think the Sunfacers had any nearby cells of fellow culties they'd called in, but all the same, Ike didn't want to hang around longer than they had to.

The Old Guard (comics + movie) Comprehensive Timeline

I spent way too much time spent researching the comics one night resulting in this, my TOG magnum opus, including every confirmed event up until the beginning of the movie. If there's anything I missed let me know (I did misplace my copy of Force Multiplied but I don't think they did many flashbacks iirc). This is mostly for my own purposes, but absolutely feel free to use it for your own fics/art/meta/etc

4500s BCE: Andromache is born in the Western Steppe, later known as Scythia, now known as the Ural region, mostly. Fifteen or so years later her mother(figure) gifts her an axe, naming Andy as her successor instead of her sisters. Five or so years later Andy's mother plans to have her killed out of jealously. Andy doesn't die, though her mother is killed in the conflict. Andy kills her attackers in revenge, then goes back to lead her people as a pseudo-god for an unspecified number of years.

500s BCE: Quỳnh (Noriko) is born in modern day Vietnam (Noriko in Japan).

330ish BCE: Lykon is killed for the first time following Alexander The Great to Judea. Andy meets him not long after (comic only canon, the movie doesn't specify when Andy and Lyon meet except to say it's after she meets Quynh).

630s CE: Andy meets Quynh in Alexandria while fighting with Amir ibn al-As. They become inseparable and travel with Lykon and Yitzhak for a time as roaming soldiers (anything about Yitzhak, so far, is comics only canon)

Note- There's no firmer information on Yitzhak aka Isaac Blue at this time, apart from him being Jewish, a contemporary of Lykon, having been with Andy in the year 1950, and now living in Alaska. There's a wonderful analysis of his likely timeline by @nevermindirah who places him around the time of the Second Temple, somewhere between 500 BCE and 70 CE.

1066: Yusuf ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Kaysani called al-Tayyib is born in Maghreb, North Africa, to a family of merchants

1069: Nicolò di Genova is born in Genoa, Italy

1099: Joe and Nicky meet and kill each other and, according to word of god (aka Greg Rucka), get on to the more pleasurable type of physical relationship very quickly after.

1100-1230: Andy and Quynh are spotted around the crusades, likely to find Nicky + Joe

1200s: Noriko (comics only canon) is killed many times fighting rogue samurai around feudal Japan

1550-1600 (Renaissance): Lykon dies for the last time, Joe saves a young artist from a fire in Genoa, forcing them to avoid Italy for 100 years

1500s (late): Quynh and Andy attempt to free people from the witch trials and are caught themselves, leading to Quynh's underwater imprisonment

1700s (late): The Guard are in London for a time. Joe saves a coffee shop owner from the stocks, Andy gets a new axe (that is still very much the same axe, to her).

1770: Sébastien LeLivre is born in Marseilles, France.

1790s: Andy meets a former West Indies slave turned British soldier turned highway robber named Achilles. Andy follows him to Australia, starts a life in a small town.

1789-95: Andy, Nicky, and Joe are at the Paris Commune. Nicky and Joe aren't speaking at the time.

1812: Booker dies in Russia while following Napoleon. He's hanged for desertion. The Guard meets up with him a few years later. (Note, it's very likely Booker was conscripted in the place of a richer man in exchange for a fee, or as blackmail material, given that married men were exempt from the Grande Armée and even the Imperial Army's levée en masse. My theory is he was caught by a banker or shop owner for his forgeries, and was therefore forced to take the man's place in the army).

1830s: Booker hangs out with his youngest son Jean-Pierre, likely towards the end of his son's life, at a Parisian restaurant. Andy leaves Achilles for an extended amount of time to go to Jamaica, likely for the Baptist War. She comes back to find him dead, killed by their neighbors. She then razes the entire town in retaliation.

1834: São Paulo. Joe jumps through a window as a distraction for reasons as yet unknown.

1853: Joe and Nicky spotted on the ground of the Crimean War

1863: Nicky goes undercover of sorts in the American Civil War as a Confederate soldier in Pennsylvania. Joe is helping the slaves Nicky frees along with the Quakers in York. The Guard appear at the Battle of Gettysburg

1870, September: Booker and Andy meet in San Francisco after Booker unknowingly saves Merrick's great grandfather in a frontier town because of an inexplicable feeling he should stay to help

1887: Nicky and Joe save a young person in Zanzibar, presumably the victim of a hate crime

1904: The Guard prevent a coup in Haiti

1914-18: The Guard fight in The Great War. Joe saves a little girl who becomes the youngest Nobel Laureate in Medicine. Andy fights in the Gallipoli campaign and in France

1916: Andy saves a refugee family in Montenegro, one of whom goes on to develop early diabetes detection.

1917: Andy takes part in a battle in Passchedaele, Belgium, and adopts an orphaned boy, Zeus

1932, November: Joe and Nicky go to a bar in Berlin, run into the person they saved in Zanzibar, and punch a Nazi.

1944: Andy is involved in the French Resistance in WWII

1945, August: The Guard prevent a third atomic bomb

1950: Andy and Yitzhak eat a meal made for them by Zeus somewhere not in the US

1956-59: Joe, Nicky, and Booker are spotted helping the Cuban Revolution

1968: Nicky and Andy appear at MLK speeches separately. Joe and Nicky rescue a man from a cave (poss. Onyx Cave, AZ in Oct. or Gory Hole, IN in Nov. -US cave incidents are very well recorded)

1969, July: The Guard take down a pedophilic serial killer in Minnesota (possibly based on Stanley Rice). Nicky and Booker stay to track down everyone who knowingly let the killer go free. Joe and Andy head on to San Francisco to watch the moon landing at a bar.

1975, April: Andy helps in Operation Babylift in Vietnam

late 1970's: Andy lands in Cleveland, not knowing where she is after a job. Coincidentally, she cleans herself up in a restaurant owned by Zeus, who she hadn't seen in decades.

1978: Booker gets captured by a cult of murder- and sex-obsessed nuns in NYC. Three months later Andy rescues a reluctant Booker from the nuns' compound in Guyana

1989: Andy helps people escape East Germany

1992: Booker serves as a combat medic in Sarajevo. Nicky attends university under the name N Smith (likely a graduate school given the wording of the ID. My guess, either for medicine or computer science, both of which were rapidly evolving at the time)

1994: Nile Freeman born, South Side of Chicago, IL

2000s: The Guard rescue children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are also linked to the US 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan.

2005: Nile's dad killed in action on the ground as a Marine

2012: The Guard take a CIA assignment in Surabaya, Indonesia, with Copley and Booker as the point persons

2013: Andy goes by the alias Alexandra Black in the Czech Republic

2014: Joe goes by the alias Joseph Jones in Germany. The Guard is seen in Syria near an USAF F-22 bombing site.

2019: Andy takes a break to travel. Joe and Nicky travel to Eastern Turkey. Booker is contacted by Copley on behalf of Merrick Industries.

2020: Nile dies for the first time in Afghanistan at the hands of an enemy insurgent. Official record has her killed in action. The events of the movie (aka comics Opening Fire 1-5). Booker returns to Paris in his exile, where he is contacted by Quynh.

Hatford/Wesninski headcanons

Also forgot to write it but Nathan’s dads first name isn’t Natan, it’s his middle name but he discards it when he gets into mob business

HC: Mary doesn’t get along with her older brothers other than Stuart. She’s years younger than them so they forget about her often but also spoil her whenever they have to since she’s the only girl.

David is the heir to the Hatford Crime syndicate but his son dies young and he and his wife spend years grieving before trying again. They arent so lucky. The other boys are pressured to try too but Jacob is shooting blanks and Thomas isn’t keen on even acknowledging his betrothed

When Mary had Nathaniel, her older brothers shunned her for good since she named him Abram. In their eyes, that name belonged to the heir and David had to name his son Isaac instead (Isaac was about a year or two younger than Neil)

Alistair Hatford created the honor and pride of the Hatford name so David wanted to give Abram to his own son in hopes of bringing good luck to their future. To him, Mary had practically killed his son for taking the name for herself

Amrita was Alistair’s fourth wife and being that he killed his last, she made him fall so head over heels for her he’d never so much as lay a hand on her. Amrita knew saying no to a crime boss like him would be suicide so she gave in and manipulated her position to ensure her survival.

Fun fact, Neil (ignoring his fathers color palette) is Amrita’s carbon male copy👀

Each of the contacts Stuart gave them was just the wives/husband families syndicates of their brothers and aunt (Alissa is Turkish, Rochelle is from a smaller French syndicate, Carli is a niece from a Mexican cartel, Maks is Russian, Margarita is Romanian)

Thomas and Charlie are fraternal twins but Thomas and Jacob are the trouble makers of the family

Elizas children cannot inherit the Hatford responsibility because they’re heirs to the Popovs and upon marriage, served her ties to the Hatfords as per agreement

Stuart is acting as head of the family as of current since David has been a mess since Isaac’s death and the other brothers don’t care for challenging him for the position. He would’ve liked Nathaniel to take over but he wouldn’t push him into it after Mary’s death

Minyard/Hemmick/Mckenzie HC

Katelyn’s mom is someone I write differently depending on the au. She’s either divorced/separated from Bruce or she’s dead. Katelyn’s mom is polish but her father is Scottish

Maria has three older siblings and one younger. I hc that even tho she willingly went with Luther, she sort of misses her father and so named her son after him

Tilda used to be known as Tillie by her family, a nickname she loathed

When Tilda got pregnant, Luther demanded she get married or she’d have to get an abortion. However, marriage was too soon and twins were too much so Mr Minyard left

Maude and Evelyn were fraternal twins but weren’t close

Angelica is a good handful of years older than Katelyn but they’re close enough that Katelyn babysits Marcin often

Because I like hiding little tidbits for myself, the Hemmicks have a habit of having two kids max and giving them names with five letters then six. (Ex, Maude, Aaron, Tilda, Nicky are 5, Evelyn, Andrew, and Luther are 6)

Toxic use of religion and neglect pushed Tilda into the life she led but Luther wouldn’t quit on his sister

Just like the Hatfords, the Hemmicks are all short

Dan’s father was never in the picture before her mother died but Cathy knew what he looked and sounded like (hispanic, tall, and handsome)

Randy and Donald are both tall ppl (6’0 and 6’4) so Matt outgrew them both (6’6)

Miranda goes by Randy too but her parents call her Miranda as to not mix her up. Miranda plays exy her entire life (playing for the Trojans starting line throughout college) and going pro before making Court. She’s the first exy player on the very top to have a clean record on and off court. Miranda has two girlfriends

David aka Dave used to play exy in college but he had a passion for medicine (thanks to uncle Aaron) so he put down his racquet and became a ortho surgeon before settling as a physical therapist for exy players after the stress got to him.

Luca also played exy but dropped it before college since he was never as passionate about it. Randy got him into boxing and he went pro before an injury temporarily had him out of the ring. Dave recommended his best friend to be Luca’s physical therapist. Luca ended up marrying that man

Dan and Matt both make time for their children, whether they’re staying home with Dan or traveling with Matt around the state for his matches

“So he’s not interested in dating in general or he’s not interested in dating you?” Aaron asks.

“In general because he is already with someone.” Andrew says through his still gritted teeth.

“He’s WHAT?” Nicky shouts drawing the attention of half of the tables near them, “Neil Josten, a man who has named his calculator, has enough game to not only be pulling my cousin but also have another person who he’s dating?!” Nicky demands.

Andrew hates that he finds Tom Isaac-84 charming. It shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be charming that Neil named his TI-84 something but Andrew is obviously powerless against this Math Nerd’s draw.

Boatload of Mummies/Book of Nails

Cheyenne Sedai: I'm really curious about Boatload of Mummies because Brandon did mention on his updates that you'd worked on it for NaNoWriMo for the past couple of years which is really cool. And the title is incredible. I don't know if that's gonna be the final title, but that's what it's always been referred to. How have you been doing with that?

Isaac Stewart: Thanks for asking us. It's a project that I love. So I finished it. Finished a draft in September of last year. It's rough. It's a really rough draft. There's a lot of things that I'm still working through. I'm trying to narrow down the shape of the plot in a way because there's a little bit of--it wasn't inspired necessarily by these things, but it was after the fact that I realized, "Oh, it's part this, part that."

It's sort of begins King Kong, if you imagined getting people on a boat. And then it continues as Death on the Nile. Then you get to a portion on an island. And then it ends The Mummy. And throw in a healthy dose of Venom. So it's like, "Okay, am I doing too much here?" And that's kind of where I'm at. You know, is this even a thing? Have I thrown too much in? Is this too much of a storyline? And i don't think it is. It really is in the end kind of a Raiders of the Lost Ark sort of story. You could pull out those some of those same elements and say, "Raiders of the Lost Ark starts out King Kong." But the basic plot line is there.

There's going to be scenes in the current draft that are basically finished. I don't think they're going to change too much from the version that it is right now to the end.

Will it be called Boatload of Mummies? Probably not. I can't see that as a title of a Cosmere book, right? But we can affectionately call it Boatload of Mummies as long as we want. The working title is Book of Nails. And whether there's a series title or not, we'll have to figure that out if it's a story that people want to continue learning about.

But let me tell you Nicki Savage is so much fun to write. Don't expect exactly what you get from the broadsheets because she is writing to a particular audience, and has learned some skills from Allomancer Jak--though I do think Allomancer Jak's stories might be closer to the truth than Nicki's are.

You will see parallels between this story and some of the elements that are in the broadsheets. But she's basically: if you can imagine a Mary Poppins. who is incredibly interested in the supernatural, and is not afraid to beat up people. That's basically your character right there. And she's just, she's a load of fun. A boatload of fun.

Cheyenne Sedai: I imagine from what you've said that you still wouldn't be ready to give us what could eventually function as a back of the book blurb?

Isaac Stewart: During the first NaNoWriMo that I worked on it we had to come up with our elevator pitch on that, and I wrote the Readers Digest, TV Guide version of it, and it was "A woman with a strange, magical power journeys to an island to find a mythical book that might raise the dead." Something like that.

This particular book is interesting because... How do I pitch this when it's a spin off of a different series. It's a spin-off from Mistborn, technically. But it's not a Mistborn book. You can't pitch that to somebody who doesn't know Mistborn. And that's been some of the fun in trying to figure this out is "How do I tell a different story here, but then have to reintroduce how Allomancy works? But now in this era, we know about Allomancy, we know about Feruchemy, we know about Hemalurgy. We have crossovers from other worlds. How do you write this book without confusing somebody entirely without... "There's like 50 magic systems in here, and I don't understand." And that then goes into the pitch. How do you pitch this book?

People who know the Cosmere, you just say it's set on Scadrial, but it's not really a Mistborn book. It's just hard to encapsulate and someday I'll figure it out.
