It wasn’t late, per se, but it was definitely starting to get dark. Things were winding down with the hustle of bustle of everyone’s return to the Ranch and Nicki - well, Nicki had some other worries. In fact, the man almost helped her back to the clinic but after she tried threatening (and failing) then pleading with him to help her to Ike’s house, he obliged. That was the only way she was going to make it out to him at this point. David helped her until she insisted she could walk the extra feet to his front door and David vanished back to the town while Nicki raised her arm, albeit gently, and knocked. “I know you hate surprise visitors but I’m hoping you’ll make an exception,” she added as she waited.

Boatload of Mummies/Book of Nails

Cheyenne Sedai: I'm really curious about Boatload of Mummies because Brandon did mention on his updates that you'd worked on it for NaNoWriMo for the past couple of years which is really cool. And the title is incredible. I don't know if that's gonna be the final title, but that's what it's always been referred to. How have you been doing with that?

Isaac Stewart: Thanks for asking us. It's a project that I love. So I finished it. Finished a draft in September of last year. It's rough. It's a really rough draft. There's a lot of things that I'm still working through. I'm trying to narrow down the shape of the plot in a way because there's a little bit of--it wasn't inspired necessarily by these things, but it was after the fact that I realized, "Oh, it's part this, part that."

It's sort of begins King Kong, if you imagined getting people on a boat. And then it continues as Death on the Nile. Then you get to a portion on an island. And then it ends The Mummy. And throw in a healthy dose of Venom. So it's like, "Okay, am I doing too much here?" And that's kind of where I'm at. You know, is this even a thing? Have I thrown too much in? Is this too much of a storyline? And i don't think it is. It really is in the end kind of a Raiders of the Lost Ark sort of story. You could pull out those some of those same elements and say, "Raiders of the Lost Ark starts out King Kong." But the basic plot line is there.

There's going to be scenes in the current draft that are basically finished. I don't think they're going to change too much from the version that it is right now to the end.

Will it be called Boatload of Mummies? Probably not. I can't see that as a title of a Cosmere book, right? But we can affectionately call it Boatload of Mummies as long as we want. The working title is Book of Nails. And whether there's a series title or not, we'll have to figure that out if it's a story that people want to continue learning about.

But let me tell you Nicki Savage is so much fun to write. Don't expect exactly what you get from the broadsheets because she is writing to a particular audience, and has learned some skills from Allomancer Jak--though I do think Allomancer Jak's stories might be closer to the truth than Nicki's are.

You will see parallels between this story and some of the elements that are in the broadsheets. But she's basically: if you can imagine a Mary Poppins. who is incredibly interested in the supernatural, and is not afraid to beat up people. That's basically your character right there. And she's just, she's a load of fun. A boatload of fun.

Cheyenne Sedai: I imagine from what you've said that you still wouldn't be ready to give us what could eventually function as a back of the book blurb?

Isaac Stewart: During the first NaNoWriMo that I worked on it we had to come up with our elevator pitch on that, and I wrote the Readers Digest, TV Guide version of it, and it was "A woman with a strange, magical power journeys to an island to find a mythical book that might raise the dead." Something like that.

This particular book is interesting because... How do I pitch this when it's a spin off of a different series. It's a spin-off from Mistborn, technically. But it's not a Mistborn book. You can't pitch that to somebody who doesn't know Mistborn. And that's been some of the fun in trying to figure this out is "How do I tell a different story here, but then have to reintroduce how Allomancy works? But now in this era, we know about Allomancy, we know about Feruchemy, we know about Hemalurgy. We have crossovers from other worlds. How do you write this book without confusing somebody entirely without... "There's like 50 magic systems in here, and I don't understand." And that then goes into the pitch. How do you pitch this book?

People who know the Cosmere, you just say it's set on Scadrial, but it's not really a Mistborn book. It's just hard to encapsulate and someday I'll figure it out.

when u were writing the kandreil band au did u have any artist you think they sounded like vocally or the type of genres they preferred?

YEAH i think i answered this before you can find it in the #band au tag but the monsters do mostly punk rock/pop covers because they are a garage band :) none of them bar aaron & nicky can sing for shit so really it’s just that that they have going on for them, but when they do original stuff it’s more often than not folk or blues, because that’s what andrew likes and he’s the only one actively writing for them. once neil gets the hang of it he’ll probably follow in andrew’s footsteps but pen some depressing ballads every now and then with kevin’s help

i did have an idea in my mind for kevin though! i think his voice could be like isaac dunbar’s at the point of canon in band au, which is like this raspy-ish deep tone i really like 🥹 when he was younger it was higher and smoother but puberty got his ass :) for the genres he prefers he would probably say None (liar) but i think he’d just be a general music fan. really he can enjoy anything if he thinks it’s well-performed and well-produced. i think kendrick’s damn released on the year band au begins so kevin would have tuned in to it, but otherwise his favorite song is before he cheats by carrie underwood which is why andrew can’t stand listening to it anymore if it comes on the radio

Her first task on being assigned a living space had been to cover over the windows. Vulnerable entry points. Catherine had nearly crawled through the place to ensure she knew any vulnerabilities and could see about sorting them.

Then Isaac helped slough the death and outside away. Uncurling her fingers and untangling her muddy, bloody hair. Cutting what couldn't be saved. By the time they were done, Catherine had been comfortable enough to joke with Isaac. It felt good and right, and she tried not to be frightened by that.

Clean clothes were so strange, feeling like a costume after her old set having practically served as a secondary skin. But normal people wore clean clothes and scrubbed under their nails and "got to know" their neighbors.

So, Catherine worked out who Nicki was, and where she lived, and presented herself at the woman's door. Two briefs knocks, and she backed off a step to wait.

If you were to put in a production here in Redwood, what would it be and who would you cast in it?

For sheer size and number of principals I'd go with Les Miserables because I don't want to inflict Cats on us, Oliver! requires too many children, and people might get touchy about doing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (although I'd be INCREDIBLE in the lead but anyhow).

1) describe a project you’re planning to work on over this summer: theres a few i need to get out of my system so i’ll keep plunking away at those.. but on the stuff i can talk about.. will give roll the bones another fair crack, its about “of somewhat fallen fortune”; and ive been circling a post-orb mirabelle & faralda piece that will be finished by fall ..fates willing..maybe even a bit for summerfest ….🤞🤞🤞

2) recommend a book: im going to read Nicky Drayden’s Symbiosis this summer, book 2 of one of the most imaginative compelling & fucking awesome scifi series I’ve ever read… if you haven’t read Drayden give her work a try

3) recommend a fic: dozens of good ones saved on my a*3, just going to highlight a few by some amazing people im privileged to know

@ghostwise’ for suffering is such a part is one of the best stories there is about Zevran’s character and the Brecilian quests, no question. as far as more longer fic for dragon age, @vakarians-babe is writing about the main plot of DA:Origins in The Lions of House Cousland, @isayashai has a few longer fics they’re going to rework and plenty of lovely shorts to enjoy

anything by @nulfaga is fantastic, since the incomparable True Gold was mentioned I’m putting in my hat for the Bridge of Details (Mass Effect 2&3, Thane, Kolyat and her own original characters) which I am endlessly enamored with. Maybe a bit niche, but for any DragonFable fans who have played far enough, As A Kind of Trial is not to be missed (Tomix!)

and I’d be remiss not to mention the fic so compelling I had to read it without having played the actual game, @blackinquisitors’s Bloom. in this world Isaac lives and grows up; this story explores his relationship with his father and the gang who raised him, as he does.

4) recommend a song: ドレス by Buck-Tick has been in my head, one of my favorite albums by them

5) share some advice: you only learn how a story is written as you write it… and more and more I’ve found, when you think you have nothing to say/are blank, try to ask yourself a different question about the plot or the people
