And some of the PARENTS. Gosh, YOURE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR CHILDREN. BE A PARENT. You’re their guide/mentor, you’re suppose to protect them from the bad and evil, even if you think they might resent or hate you for it, or hell! Even if this kills their career. BUT they will understand when they grow older. They’ll be thankful. And when they’re older y’all can be as best friends as you want, but when they’re young and naive (sorry for the lack of better word) you have to be the adult in that situation and protect them. It’s not a popularity contest, it’s a take better care of your kids type of contest.

You weren’t exactly sure how you’d let Chris Sturniolo talk you into this. One minute, you were rolling your eyes at another one of his obnoxious flirtations during your study session, and the next, you were agreeing to let him take you out to dinner.

Now here you were, sitting across from him in a cozy Italian restaurant, wondering how on earth this cocky, loudmouthed quarterback had somehow convinced you to give him a chance.

Chris showed up ten minutes late (because of course he did), but he made an entrance like he owned the place. His hair was tousled just enough to look effortlessly cool, and the casual button-up shirt he wore only added to his irritating charm.

“Hey, nerd,�� he said as he slid into the seat across from you, flashing that stupid grin that had become far too familiar. “Miss me?”

“You’re late,” you said, ignoring the way your stomach flipped at the sight of him.

“And you’re beautiful,” he shot back smoothly. “Guess we’re both stating facts.”

You rolled your eyes, picking up your menu to avoid looking at him. “Flattery won’t make up for the fact that you kept me waiting.”

“Noted,” he said, smirking as he grabbed his own menu. “But I’m still off to a great start, right?”

“Debatable,” you muttered, though you couldn’t fight the small smile tugging at your lips.

Dinner turned out to be surprisingly… nice.

Chris was still cocky and ridiculous, but there was a softer side to him that peeked out when he wasn’t too busy trying to be a smartass. He told you stories about his brothers, his teammates, and the one time he tried to fake his way through a pop quiz by making up answers on the spot (it didn’t work).

You found yourself laughing more than you cared to admit, and by the time dessert arrived, you realized you were actually enjoying yourself.

“So,” Chris said as he leaned back in his chair, looking far too pleased with himself. “What’s the verdict? Am I winning you over yet?”

“You’re tolerable,” you said, mirroring the same line you’d given him earlier during your tutoring sessions.

“Tolerable?” he repeated, feigning outrage. “Y/N, I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into this date, and all I get is tolerable?”

“I mean, that’s an upgrade from annoying, isn’t it?” you teased, taking a sip of your water.

He grinned, leaning forward across the table. “Alright, nerd. Let’s settle this once and for all.”

You raised an eyebrow. “Settle what?”

“Whether or not you actually like me,” he said, his voice dropping just enough to make your heart skip a beat.

By the time the two of you stepped outside into the crisp night air, you were still thinking about his words. Chris walked you to your car, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he matched your pace.

“You know,” he said, glancing over at you, “I had fun tonight.”

You laughed softly. “Shocking.”

“I’m serious,” he said, his usual smirk softening into something more genuine. “You’re not like anyone I’ve ever met.”

“That’s probably because most people you meet let you get away with murder,” you teased, though your voice wavered slightly under his gaze.

“True,” he admitted with a small chuckle. “But you? You keep me on my toes.”

You stopped in front of your car, turning to face him. “Well, someone has to keep your ego in check.”

He stepped closer, his smile fading as his eyes locked on yours. “You’re good at that,” he said quietly.

The space between you felt impossibly small, and before you could overthink it, Chris leaned down, his lips brushing against yours in a kiss that was softer than you ever expected from him.

It wasn’t rushed or cocky, like you’d imagined it might be. It was careful, like he was testing the waters, waiting to see if you’d pull away. But you didn’t. Instead, you let yourself lean into him, your hands gripping the front of his shirt as the world seemed to blur around you.

When he finally pulled back, his grin returned, though it was softer now, almost shy.

“So,” he said, his voice low, “still think I’m just tolerable?”

You laughed, shaking your head. “You’re such an ass.”

“Yeah,” he said, stepping back just enough to let you breathe. “But you like me anyway.”

You rolled your eyes, opening your car door. “Don’t push your luck, Sturniolo.”

As you slid into your seat and started the engine, Chris leaned down, resting his arms on your open window.

“Next week,” he said, his voice full of confidence again. “Same time, same place?”

“We’ll see,” you said, unable to hide your smile as you drove away.

And for the first time since you started tutoring him, you found yourself actually looking forward to seeing him again.

You were already tapping your pen furiously against the table, trying to suppress the urge to hurl his practice problems at the nearest wall. If this guy couldn’t bother to show up on time, why the hell were you wasting your afternoons helping him?

Just as you were about to pack up and leave, Chris strolled into the library like he had all the time in the world. His football jersey was slung over his shoulder, and his hair was still damp from practice.

“Sorry, I’m late,” he said, dropping his bag onto the chair with an unapologetic smirk. “Coach wouldn’t stop running his mouth.”

You glared at him. “And you couldn’t text me?”

He grinned, sitting down across from you. “Relax, Y/N. I’m here now. Let’s get this over with so you can stare at me in peace.”

You scoffed, flipping open your notebook. “I stare at you? That’s rich coming from the guy who can’t stop flirting with me.”

He leaned back, throwing his arms behind his head. “What can I say? I’m a man of many talents. Flirting just happens to be one of my best.”

“Funny, because I don’t remember tutoring ‘ego management’ as part of this deal,” you muttered, shoving a worksheet at him. “Now, focus. You’ve got a test to pass, and I’ve got better things to do than babysit you.”

“Better things?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “Doubt it.”

“Chris, shut up and solve the first problem,” you snapped.

For the first twenty minutes, he actually tried. You had to admit, when Chris wasn’t running his mouth or trying to charm you into a date, he wasn’t half-bad at math. He asked questions, worked through mistakes, and even managed to get a few problems right on his own.

“Boom. Nailed it,” he said, sliding the worksheet back to you with a cocky grin.

You looked it over, your pen tracing the numbers as you checked his work. “Not bad,” you admitted begrudgingly.

He smirked. “Say it again. Louder.”

“Don’t push your luck,” you warned, flipping to the next set of problems.

Chris groaned, letting his head fall back dramatically. “Do I really have to do more? I just proved I’m a math genius.”

“You got two out of five right,” you said dryly. “If that’s your idea of genius, it explains a lot.”

He sat up, resting his chin on his hand as he stared at you. “You know, Y/N, you’re kind of mean.”

“Only to people who deserve it,” you shot back. “Now, shut up and get back to work.”

By the time the session was almost over, Chris had surprisingly made a lot of progress. He wasn’t perfect, but he was definitely better than when you started tutoring him.

“Alright,” you said, closing your notebook. “I think that’s enough for today.”

“Thank God,” Chris muttered, stretching in his chair. “I thought my brain was gonna explode.”

“Better your brain than your GPA,” you said, packing up your things.

As you stood to leave, Chris leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “Wait, hold up.”

You sighed. “What now?”

“Dinner,” he said, flashing that damn grin of his. “My treat. You’ve earned it after dealing with me.”

You stared at him, blinking. “You’re still on this?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” he said, leaning closer. “You’re smart, you’re funny, and you’re way too good at pretending you don’t think I’m hot.”

Your jaw dropped. “You’re delusional.”

“And you’re in denial,” he shot back.

You shook your head, slinging your bag over your shoulder. “Chris, I’m not going out with you.”

“Not yet,” he said confidently, standing up and walking alongside you as you left the library. “But you’ll cave eventually. They always do.”

You stopped in your tracks, turning to glare at him. “They?”

He grinned, holding his hands up in mock surrender. “Relax. I’m just messing with you.”

“Asshole,” you muttered, shoving past him.

“Aw, don’t be mad, nerd,” he called after you. “You can call me whatever you want—as long as you’re saying yes to dinner.”

You flipped him off without looking back, though you couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at your lips.

“See you next week, Y/N!” he shouted, his voice echoing down the hallway.

Despite yourself, you knew you’d show up. And maybe—just maybe—you were starting to like the way he made your blood boil.
