Regression Modeling in Practice Project One

I will use data set I got from my researcher friend who is working on a biological field. This data is observational data because he didn’t manipulate at all. He collected his data from his own research from Jan 2014 to December 2014. Here population is gnomically diverse banana cultivars grown in U.S and sample is selected banana cultivars grown in particular region. Here are some information’s before I get into my data and research question.

About Carotenoids:

Ø  A family of pigmented compounds

Ø  Synthesized by plants and microorganisms but not animals

Ø  Fruits and vegetables are the major sources of carotenoid in human diet.

Ø  Preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases

Ø  Sources of vitamin A

Banana Health Benefits

Ø  The fourth most important food in the world, after rice, wheat, and maize.

Ø  Bananas are a rich source of carotenoids.

Ø  Banana cultivars with pulp flesh coloration of yellow to orange have higher β-carotene content than cultivars with _white or beige _flesh coloration (Fungo and Pillay, 2010; Wall, 2006; Englberger et al., 2003)

Ø  There is increased interest in carotenoid- rich banana cultivars to reduce non-communicable chronic disease (Borges et al., 2014; Englberger et al., 2003, 2006, and 2010).

Factors Influencing Carotenoid Composition or Hypothesis:

Ø  Cultivar or variety

Ø  Bananas increase in carotenoid content with maturation (Wall, 2006; Lee and Kader, 2000; Wenkam, 1990).

Ø  In most of the reports concerning carotenoid content of banana, fully ripe stage assumed as the best stage with the highest amount of carotenoid (Englberger et al., 2010; Englberger et al., 2006; Subagio and Morita, 1997).

Ø  Arora et al., 2008:

Ø Lokesh et al., 2014: Cavendish banana had the lowest amount of total carotenoid.

3rd column is repetition 1 2 3 4 for each cultivar.

4th column is Total Carotenoid (µg/100gfw)

Research Question:

What are the effects of maturity(MG, TR, R, OR) at harvest on pulp total carotenoid content of gnomically diverse banana cultivars grown in U.S?

So, here Maturity Stages are my categorical explanatory variable and total carotenoid is quantitative response variable.
