Five years since the haiku party here in the Stargate fandom that @nicehatgeorgia randomly started.

Five years since I distracted myself from my (six days late) waters breaking/contractions with Sam/Jack haiku.

My child is now five,

Fire and lightning unbottled.

Wonders never cease.

And now it's five seconds since I wrote one. XD

Still can't believe my youngest is turning five. If time could slow down please, I'd appreciate it.

WIP Wednesday

I was tagged by @youreorangeyoumoron (thank u!!)

I am probably about a week out from posting this fic, which is exciting because I've been working on it (or, well, """working on it""") for almost a year! It's For All Mankind, set between S2 and S3, and it's about how Margo and Aleida get across that eight year gap.

“So how’re you doing?” Margo asks, once she’s taken the edge off her hunger.

Aleida shrugs, her eyes on her mashed potatoes. “I’m okay, I guess.” Her eyes flick up to Margo and then back down again. “How… are you?”

“No, I mean.” Margo purses her lips. “How are you. Since…” she waves her fork in circles. She’s still not sure what to call it, this thing Gordo and Tracy did because Margo told them to, because Ellen had backed them all in a corner. “You know. A couple of weeks ago.”

“Oh.” Aleida’s face falls a little bit. “It’s, uh. Yeah, it’s awful. It’s just like… We were talking to them, and then…” She blows out a breath and shakes her head. 

“Yeah,” Margo says.

Reagan called it a hero’s sacrifice – but he would, of course, that’s easy enough to say from behind a politician’s desk. Molly’s gone back and forth between calling it the ballsiest thing she’s ever seen and a fucking travesty. Ed Baldwin won’t say a word about it, not that Margo blames him. 

She wonders what Aleida’s been calling it.

Saw this on Twitter and was quite baffled by the idea of sorting by kudos in the first place. I’ve always just gone to the SG1 tag or the Sam/ Jack tag on AO3, which is automatically sorted by most recent, and didn’t even realise you could sort by kudos!

One thing that struck me was that multi-chapter fics probably get more kudos than one-shots simply because they’d be at the top of the ‘most recent’ list more often as they are updated, meaning more readers have a chance to see them. A one-shot doesn’t get that boost.

So, I’ve just sorted the S/J tag by kudos and the top ten fics are:

Crossover fic (SG1/ SGA, Teen Wolf, The Sentinel) - multi-chapter, 2,915 kudos, 63k hits

Crossover fic (NCIS, SG1/ SGA, The Sentinel) - multi-chapter, 1,844 kudos, 65k hits

SGA Rodney/ John fic - under 2k words and a fairly low-key relationship fic (from Sam’s POV), but it’s got 1,778 kudos and 17k hits.

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (The Love That Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger by NiceHatGeorgia) - multi-chapter, 1,490 kudos , 37k hits

SGA/ SG1 invasion of earth-type fic - multi-chapter, 1,366 kudos, 42k hits

Crossover fic (SG1, Teen Wolf - same author as no. 1) - multi-chapter, 1,308 kudos, 8k hits

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (Compulsion by Sharim28) - multi-chapter, 1,374 kudos, 33k hits

The next ten includes another Teen Wolf crossover (same author again), two sequel stories to no 5, a SGA/ Avengers crossover, four Sam/ Jack fics (three complete and one WIP), a SGA one-shot, and a SG1 one-shot (a quantum mirror/ OT4 story which is 66k words!).

I really was not expecting the top story to be a Teen Wolf crossover 😧 It was published in 2017, and I’d love to know why that particular story is such a big hit. Big Name Fan as author? A logical connection between Teen Wolf and SG1 that I’m not aware of? The writing (the crossovers and the author’s other SG1 fics) is good, and the author quite prolific, but it is still a surprising result.

I also looked at sorting by bookmarks, which similar to sorting by kudos (only one per story), and unsurprisingly the top twenty fics when sorted by comments are all multi-chapter.

I agree with the point that good fic in the early eras of a fandom might not be classed as good in the later years. I’ve found this in my trawl through the Gateworld S/J recs where stories that are recommended as being really great are not that well-written or in character to my eyes. I think some of that might be the change in tone - there are some early SG1 fics (dated during the show’s run) that seem to have a more light-hearted/ almost comedy tone, and I’m trying to think whether the early seasons do seem less serious than the later seasons as the stakes get higher/ the war with the Goa’uld seems less likely to be won. I’ve mused on this before and haven’t come up with an answer!

1. somewhere on the steepest slope (there’s an endless rope):

Cold.

That's the first thing he notices.

He's never been so cold. It's beyond pain and into something purer—it's all-encompassing, and he embraces it, because…this is it, right? An end to it all. And it's a relief. He feels like he's been fighting forever, and he doesn't even remember who he's fighting or why, he just wants to rest… 

2. Tell all the Truth but tell it slant:

It's so obvious, he doesn't know why it never occurred to him that Lila would have enemies. 

3. Not Romeo, Not Juliet:

Working as a janitor didn't pay well, and vigilantism didn't pay shit, so Diego had a third job as a bouncer-slash-bartender a couple of nights a week, at a club that opened just as Al's gym was closing. It wasn't much, but it kept him in knives and iodine. Anyway, sleep was for losers.

Hello friend! A friend of mine is doing a Stargate SG-1 rewatch and lamenting the slim pickings of fic on AO3. Do you know where she can find fic that perhaps is still on some old archive of yore? Or have any recs? She's mostly interested in Jack/Daniel and Jack/Sam. Ty!!

oh my. with all the love in the world to your friend visiting us from a very different fandom tax bracket than i have ever had the fortune to participate in (those two pairings have well over 6k fics each on ao3), i'll see what i can do!

[several hours of looking around later] bad news!! not much!

most of vintage sg-1 fandom was wiped out by expired domains, struck-through livejournals, ff.net's porn ban, yahoo lists, etc. some pages are still preserved in the wayback machine for heliopolis, the massive het-and-gen archive, and area52, the slash counterpart, but with the search and directory functions pretty much toast, they're almost impossible to navigate.

fanlore has an old list of archives (including plenty of jack/daniel ones). some smaller archives might yield wayback paydirt, especially if they were hand-coded. samandjack.net is still alive!

and, hate to say it, this was peak era for ff.net and they have like 30k fics over there... but all the explicit fic is gone.

i recently learned some people are still doing het-reccers (user-submitted fanfic recommendations, LJ archive is here). i don't know if any slash equivalents are still around (and i haven't looked at this site for genuinely fifteen years, so i can't speak to the quality of recs).

some sam/jack recs of mine; some of these authors multi-ship:

nanda: her resolution series especially should not be missed and i can't stress that enough. smut and action. fics great fics across the board.

it's kind of difficult to express how popular Salr323's fics were (under a different name) back in the day. i'm told that archive servers would crash when she posted something new. low on smut, high on PINING. rec: it was admittedly 1 am but as i recall this one made me feel like i'd just seen the fanfiction mona lisa

there are quite a few multifandom wonders who cut their teeth in this fandom, including missparker (rec: a small crime)

this cassandra fraiser fic dealt me some damage: nobody dies tonight by isawet

someone who's still in touch with her please harass splash_the_cat for writing 99 sg-1 fics and then walking away without cracking 100. lots of fun little snacks in there including this one

Mark had a panic earlier because I was breathing like I was in pain. Wouldn't listen when I said it wasn't labour, called his parents, got all in a flap, then finally calmed down when I read out a pamphlet about the latent (think its latent anyways) stage of labour, like the bit before things happen, that says, "Chill at home, watch a dvd, relax. Don't go to the hospital yet."

Think I'm having some Braxton Hicks contractions though so... soon, maybe? (Especially the way I'm feeling pressure on my pelvis, ugh.)

This is gonna be painful.
