It's simple, I know how to be polite and ignore fiction I'm not interested in, and I don't base my concept of morality on what I personally consider to be icky or distasteful.

If you clicked on and read a fanfiction that had tags or a description that upset you and you were upset by it, that's your responsibility, not the author's responsibility.

If you were reading a fanfiction and you got to an unexpected part that disturbed you and you kept reading after you were disturbed, that was your choice and your responsibility, not the author's.

No one is forcing you to read fanfiction that upsets you. The back button is your friend.

If you are reading a piece of fanfiction it's because it interests you. Horrified fascination counts as interest. No fanfiction is holding you hostage and forcing you to read it.

I hear you loud and clear.

The very first fanfic I wrote was male slash (it had a very specific purpose). I was in my mid 30s and had not had a male lover in over 10 years (and because of who I was back then I wouldn't have asked any of the guys in the few years I thought I was straight).

And yet there I was wanting to write smexy and believable gay porn and I sat there and asked myself "Dude, how does that even work for dudes?"

I don't even know how many hours I put into researching that particular subject.

Do not write fanfiction. One second you're normal and the next you're downloading a calendar from 2004 and tearing your hair out over what specific date every event in your fic happens

I appreciate this ... acceptance? It's nice to be acceptable.

But I feel obligated to point out that I've been posting on this hellsite (affectionate) since at least 2008.

I was talking to my mom the other day, and she said she was going to start going to the gym, because its important care for your body. I’m disabled w/ multiple chronic illnesses, so going to the gym is impossible for me. She seemed to realize this, and started to backtrack, saying like - its part of taking care of herself, and I interrupted and said, “Its okay mom. You and I taking care of ourselves look very different”. And thats what I would like you to know.

Taking care of yourself looks different. 

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like fruit smoothies and gym visits, cutting out sugar and weight training.

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like hospital visits, feeding tubes and ports. Needles and tests.

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like taking medication and lying down in a cool dark room.

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like getting any calories in their body that they can.

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like adding in more vegetables and trying to go outside to get sun more often.

For some people, taking care of themselves looks like seeing a therapist, keeping symptom journals, and practicing mindfulness, meds, or grounding techniques. 

We all have different needs. Please don’t feel bad about how you care for yourself just because someone else is able to do “more”, or their care is more performative or obvious. Please don’t look down on someone for caring for themselves in a way that you do not. Medication and rest are just as important as exercise and vegetables.

Keep doing your best to care for yourself, the best way you know how. Your self care and health is important, no matter what it looks like.
