Year-End Writer's Roundup: 2024 edition

It’s that time of year, writer friends: time to take stock of what we’ve been up to this year! Words written (published or not, WIPs totally count too!!): 882 674. A decrease compared to previous years, but there is a good reason for this (even though I need to keep reminding myself that it’s a good thing) — more details below.

Smut scenes: 44 — similar to the past few years.

New things I tried:

I wrote a fully-fledged poly ship for the first time with Halsin, Astarion and my Tav, complete with feelings and all! I’ve written sexual-only threesomes/moresomes before, but this is the first time I’ve had there be actual romance as well as sex. 

Significant M/M sexy time, including anal sex. I probably won’t write anal sex again for personal reasons, but I’m glad I dabbled at least.

I wrote something that I do not intend to post publicly, purely just for me. More on this later.

My Astarion/Tav fic, just based on sheer number of words alone.

My Zoro/Reader fic, Relentless. These three chapters came together (HUEHUE) so quickly based on the sheer force of Zoro thirst. NOTHING LIKE THAT THREE-SWORD STYLE TO GET US WANTING HIS FOURTH SWORD 🤣

Favourite thing I wrote: 

This is tough this year aaaaaaaa. The Teia/Viago fic was one that I’d been wanting to write since 2020, and I’m grateful to the Veilguard hype for resparking that flame and making it happen. I LOVED writing all of my Halsin smut because Halsin just makes me SO CRAZY (I genuinely think he might be the one singular videogame boyfriend I’ve felt the most feral about). My Rolan/Tav fic felt like it was born from a very bright spark of inspiration, and I had a fun few weeks just blasting through writing that. 

But my #1 fave thing to write might have been the One Piece Sanji/OC fic that I am not planning to publish. Not publishing means there’s been no pressure to “make it good” or to figure out every detail of timelines/lore/OC backstory etc, so I can just do whatever I want. And that freedom to just make the fic mine, for me, has been really valuable this year. 

Favourite thing I read: 

Oh fuck, I read basically nothing this year HAHAHA. But I did read this one Sanji/Nico Robin smutfic that I REALLY loved. And I absolutely devoured a novel by one of my fave authors (Grown Ups by Marian Keyes) during our mini-vacay to Florida in February.

Writing goals for next year: 

My only goal for the coming year is this: to write only what I really WANT to write.

This probably sounds obvious, but it’s a whole thing that’s tied up with expectations of myself and self-worth and blah blah blah, so the rest of this post will be a bit of a personal essay that you can feel free to pass on HAHA.

I started therapy last year, and I’m in the part of my “therapy journey” now where one of the things I’m working through is the fact that I hold unhealthily high expectations of myself in basically every realm of my life. I force myself to suppress/compartmentalize/ignore my own feelings because I prioritize other people’s feelings over my own, and I spend a lot of my time focusing on things that I think I “should” be doing, at the expense of my own comfort levels/needs/physical or mental health etc. (ELDEST SISTER SYNDROME ANYONE?) And unfortunately, over the years, this way of operating has insidiously snuck its way into my writing.

When I first started writing fanfic in 2017, the writing was entirely born from an overwhelming desire to just get out this story in my head and make it a reality. I started writing for no other reason than because I wanted to. But as time went on and I gained a lovely following of readers, I started prioritizing my readers’ desires over my own. In particular, I’ve gotten too caught up by the idea of being That Writer™ who posts frequently and who finishes her fics: two qualities that I have often been praised for. This led to a habit of sticking to very strict schedules of always posting at least one chapter of something every single week — and if I was working on more than one fic, I would pressure myself to post a chapter of each fic every week. I would pressure myself to do this even when my back pain and migraines started flaring up in 2020, because I did not want to disappoint my readers.

To be clear: all of this was pressure coming from myself. Nobody was telling me I need to post every week or that I need to finish everything I write; I was the one holding myself to these insane standards. But for years, I’ve been able to meet these standards, and it hasn’t been a problem — or so I thought.

Then this year happened. Therapy stuff happened and health stuff got worse, and for the first time ever, I started having days where I just could not make myself write. I would sit at the computer for hours, unable to conjure any words. For some of my fics, this meant weeks or even months between updates. Sometimes when the words finally came, the writing felt like a struggle or a chore rather than an act of love, because I was doing something that I felt like I had to do rather than something I really wanted.

This has been absolute fucking torture for me. I felt so shitty about myself for not being able to do the one thing that I legitimately love doing the most in the world. This was especially distressing because I have given writing advice before stating that when you’re writing a long fic, you sometimes have to write shit you don’t want to write before you can get to the good stuff. And the fact that I’m struggling to do this now has left me feeling like a hypocrite and a failure for not being able to follow my own advice. 

To make things worse, some of the fandoms I’ve been writing for have been… unresponsive. The ratio of hits to actual comments has been pretty abysmal. The lack of engagement and encouragement just added onto the feelings of shittiness and inadequacy, as though I was failing to meet readers’ expectations somehow, and I can’t lie: it was part of why I stopped writing for one fandom this year, and I’ve never felt so bitter about finishing any fics as I did with a couple of the fics I wrapped up this year.

With time, a lot of tears and self-castigation, and ongoing therapy sessions, I’ve slowwwwwly realized that I am being unkind to myself by holding myself to such high expectations, and that I need to actively combat these expectations by refocusing on writing things that I want to write rather than worrying about disappointing my readers. I’m also working on writing only when I want to and when I feel good, i.e. not forcing myself to write when my head is throbbing or when I’m in too much pain to sit in my office chair. 

To this end, I have been writing some One Piece fic that I have no plans to post publicly: fic that is entirely self-indulgent fun. And it’s actually been the best exercise in returning to the hedonistic selfish joy of writing what I want, which is why I started doing this in the first place. Moving forward, I’m going to keep working on writing for myself first and foremost. I’ll strive to write what only what really sparks joy for me, and if that means my word count keep dropping year after year, I will try to remind myself that this is a good and healthy thing, since any words that I write should be a gift to myself first and foremost.

So more abt my regency au 😚 (apologies if there are any similarities to others ideas). I don't want to spoil it to much so I'm just going to share the tropes and stories I've been inspired by ^_^

I’ve already posted some stuff about John Price (read here!!) , but I’d like to say his story is very much Daphne x Simon coded. I was inspired by the “I burn for you” scene of their story and wanted to make my own take on it but with him ofc. Pining and brother's bfs are the major tropes of this small story.

And now for my future projects of my au!!

Baron John(ny) Mactavish!! Eee omg , his story will most definitely inspired by Anthony and Kate. Enemies to lovers, him and his love interest bickering and driving each other insane. Both of them are hella stupid and cannot tell the difference between hate and love. His story takes place after John's.

After Johnny is Gaz! Marquis Kyle Garrick finds himself falling for his old family friend when she's is in her first year on the marriage mart. Based off of Penelope x Colin. Longing and friendship will be major tropes in his fic, I will not lie I am most excited to write his.

And at last, Duke Simon Riley. Queen Charlotte vibes all the way. Arranged marriage, angst, "I can fix him" vibes all around. Since this story will (most likely) be the last of this series I def want to make it my most serious and treat it right.

I'm unsure as to how many parts I am going to make each story , but I don't want to drag them on for too long. This series is supposed to be my fun lil baby and I don't want to hurt myself over it :3. As ive said in the series master list, the stories are written in a specific order so it may take me a bit to get around to ur fave. I thank and appreciate anyone who is willing to stick around long enough, Price chapter coming next week (hopefully!).

my first ever interaction with your blog was when your taylor as gojo post came up— specifically king of my heart and speak now … although you’re losing me has to be one of my faves. reading the series as it came out, it was actually mind boggling to me when i realized you also wrote family rules!!

now.. onto the past THREE days ! i always saw your posts for method acting but never really got around to it, that is, until this week. i started reading it out of wanting a multi-part story and that i knew i’d love your writing as i have so many times before. when i started method acting.. i couldn’t even put my phone down and stayed up the whole night reading half the story and sobbing every chapter (probably beginning at sick with sadness like everyone..) i had never been so hooked at the ending of “historic wins” like wdym they don’t get married and adopt a cat named gerald immediately … WHAT DO YOU MEAN ..this is SICK work. anyways i finished the rest of method acting within the next two days (much to my dismay…) and now im writing this ! i have NOT been the same i don’t think i’ve been so emotional in a while

Oh god like of all time?? Idk if I can choose. I've written a BUNCH.

I really like More That I Want for Ardynn and Halsin (because it was the first BG3 I really wrote). It’s nothing too flashy and I think it’s nostalgic for me. I still reread it occasionally.

I like a lot from Dani’s and Freyr’s oneshots but some of them are quite old by my standards (I mean they’re only a few months old but still) and idk which would be my favorite anymore. Maybe Dani’s Argument with Gale and Freyr’s post-game scene with Minthara? I feel like I’ve grown as a writer since writing a lot of their scenes, and I was writing daily oneshots at the time so the quality wasn’t always great.

From the Gale oneshots, I’m pretty partial to the new librarian fic lmao it was just a ton of fun to write. The Gale oneshots tend to be my most popular but this one is like a hidden gem.

And as for my favorite scenes in A Macabre Masquerade, probably the latter half of Chapter 6 leading into Chapter 7. It was a scene I had envisioned for a while before finally writing it and it was so satisfying to get it down. I just kept envisioning these parallel universes in the mirrors and instantly had an idea for the OG white dragonborn Durge 👀

For In Fathoms Below, my favorite scene so far has been the very end of Chapter 4 and all of Chapter 5, because big action scene with a DRAGON TURTLE, and chapter 9 because I loved picturing all the different spaces of the Underdark.

Hey, anon! 👋🏻 I’m currently working on editing the fourth chapter today, getting ready to post it. However, I’ve also been taking time to try and sort out what storylines and arcs I think would be best for the layout of this first part, before releasing the chapters. I’ve already, technically, gotten a majority of the first part written out. It’s just hard because there’s so much I want to do with the series, and while I’ve got a lot of fun ideas and chapters written out for later along in the series with lots of my personal faves coming into play, along with storylines I’m super interested in, I also want to make sure I’m not rushing the reader’s trauma simply because I’m excited to explore those characters/situations/and the fun ideas I’ve got.

So don’t worry! I’m definitely planning on updating. Just to let you in on some of the stuff going on on my end, too, I’m also currently moving and getting ready to enter an eight-week intensive workstudy program with my university before going into eight months of work. So that’s also been a bit time consuming as well. Nevertheless, the next chapter should be out today or tomorrow! Thanks for reading ❤️🙏🏻🙌🏻

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic? While writing a time loop fic (that ended up not seeing the light of day in that iteration anyway), I went down a massive wormhole researching chaos theory and LET ME TELL YOU I still think about small differences in initial conditions leading to the impossibility of meaningful predictions. I need to write about time loops more.

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic? I am very bad at remembering lines I really liked writing or reading, not just in my work but in any prose written by anyone-not-named-Joan-Didion (“A single person is missing for you, and the whole world is empty” floors me as much now as it did ten years ago when I read it for the first time), but I just watched a RHOBH trailer tonight, a show I haven’t watched in years, so I’m going with “Groping each other during a Real Housewives marathon hardly counts as dating” from smoother than the LA weather as being a fave.

23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?

Apparently I’ve decided that I can only write AUs that are so long and complicated that they need multiple chapters to work so I am a bit more disciplined when writing multi-chapter fics than one-shots (outlines vs vibes) simply to maintain internal consistency within the world I’ve created. But the one benefit of that is I know which plot beats I want to hit in a chapter and where that falls in the larger outline of the story as a whole. Within those moments, some lend themselves naturally to being better chapter endings than others. I also tend to end at a moment that can exist on its own while still being intriguing enough to make someone read the next chapter. I don’t like cliffhangers because a) I like the luxury of being able to skip forward a few days/weeks/whatever at the start of the next chapter; b) I try to end things so that if I were to never pick up that WIP again, it could still exist as a semi-contained story (although one that is not entirely satisfying because all the questions haven’t been answered) instead of one that ends on a gotcha moment. I can’t remember now which showrunner said that they tried to have each season of a show have a clear ending because they owed the viewers a complete story (especially in the landscape of things getting cancelled three seconds after they’re put out in the world) and I agree with that wholeheartedly. You’ll never get a “who shot JR?” chapter ending from me. It feels a little cheap.

We Still Bloom Complete, 18k, Rated T by @artsyunderstudy

I am a sucker for Hanahaki fics (the angst! The pain! The perceived unrequited love! The ticking clock!) and this one does not disappoint. Set within those awful doubting weeks of WS/AWTWB and sprinkled with plenty of past memories and present action, this author really lets you sit with that sorrow and uncertainty. Plus FANTASTIC art! What more could you want?

The Beautiful Game WIP, currently 8k, Rated T by @fatalfangirl

This fic is composed of anecdotes of Simon and Baz playing football over the years but football is merely a lens to view the progression of their relationship. It’s canon compliant and fits so seamlessly with the events surrounding it. The WS chapter, for example, packs a punch in a few hundred words. It will have you sobbing, squealing, sighing and laughing as the chapters take you through the best (and worst) of their relationship. But through it all they have football. Need I say more?

This Is Your Place, Complete, 19k, Rated M by @cutestkilla This fic was written for @carryonprompts fest (along with the two above!) and answered the question: how would things have differed if Baz came back to his room after the Open sesame incident to find Simon, tits out, bloody and without his cross? This author took the prompt in a a sexy but also tender and angsty direction. A lovely get together written by a very talented writer.

Speaking of, I’m gonna jump back to @cutestkilla’s first fic because she just posted this great meta about what informed her version of the Humdrum from canon, which got me thinking about how What’s Left is still one of my favorite fics of all time so if you haven’t read this fic about what if Simon really died in the White Chapel and the Humdrum (Sid, my beloved) was left, how might he and Baz take on the Mage? It’s so creative, funny, sweet and heartfelt and (despite the way the premise sounds) will leave you fulfilled in a way you never knew you needed to be.

Ready or Not WIP, currently 5k, Rated E by @bookish-bogwitch

Another Carry On Prompts Fest fic that I am OBSESSED with. It’s a Watford era magickal mishap (my fave, it should be a proper tag!) in which Simon accidentally spells Baz to spontaneously orgasm without warning several times a day. This story is both hilarious and so sexy and the end of chapter 1 leaves us with a delightful twist. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Stress Management WIP currently 22k, rated M by @whogaveyoupermission

Normal AU, later in life get together in which social worker!Simon tried to manage his stress by attending a barre class taught by none other than his former classmate Baz. This fic is so sweet and sexy you will be screeching for them to get together by the end of the first chapter. And yet this author is building their mutual pining so, so well. Bonus content includes Baz in all sorts of sexy barre instructor outfits that you won’t want to miss!

Yes!

First up - okayanna wrote three absolutely gorgeous Adrinette fics. Two are very short, one longer. ‘Golden (Like Daylight)’ is one of my favourite things I’ve ever read. Adrien tries to define the feelings he has for Marinette, and love in general. The writing is poetic, the emotions strong, and the whole thing absolutely stunning. I wanted to re-read it as soon as I’d finished.

Her sister abbeysue wrote a beeaaaaaaautiful long Adrinette fic called ‘The Way I Loved You’ that had my heart in my mouth the whole way through. I just had to read it all in one sitting because I couldn’t stand to put it down for a night. Again, it is so gorgeously written. The emotions are so on point. I want to re-read that one over and over and over again.

Something a bit newer - RaspberryCatapult is such a beautiful writer and did a really moving long Adrinette fic called ‘The Hardest Things Come After’. I happen to know they're planning something excellent for their next fic, too :) It will also be Adrinette, very original, and start being posted on Ao3 next week.

An AU - dahldahlbills has done a really interesting tree-world fantasy AU thing that is a WIP but so far seems very Adrinette. I’m loving it and looking forward to the next chapter.

There are a lot of other great ones, but some are really old and a lot focus more on other characters, too. Those up there are currently my faves that sit firmly in the Adrinette category. I also write a ton of Adrinette - you can find me on Ao3 as uptoolateart.

monthly (ish) progress update CT:OS

Hi everyone! I’ve been pretty quiet on tumblr the past few days, but active on the coding/writing side of things :) Just wanted to give a short update on how things are going :) 

(As a rough gauge, I edited almost 50k words, and wrote + coded another 25k. P.S. My editing process is super important - ‘cause it’s where I do really major rearrangements/re-writes + add ideas + polish + brainstorm the next few scenes - basically, CT:OS would be so very, very different if I stopped at my vomit draft (yes, this is what I call my first draft). So it’s not just me wasting time, I promise!)

SORRY for being really bad at answering asks the past week/weeks, I’ve been concentrating on writing, planning, coding and editing. 

I’ll be heading off for a long holiday in <1 week, so things have also been super busy for me at my day (real) job + trip planning + trying to write as much as I can at night. So: If I don’t get the update out to beta-testers in a week, before I go hiking (most likely), it looks like an update in End July or Aug seems probable.

"The Definitive Byler fic rec list"

Literally no one asked for this but because I spent the majority of last year (...and 2019, and 2018...) reading byler fics and coping with life, I thought I’d make a list of some of my absolute favorites. 

The other day I was basically starving for some byler fics and the angel @magicalfairy provided me with some of her faves so I thought I’d do the same, because I love reading, and I love all of these fics and I appreciate their writers💗 And fic writers in general, come on!

- This is a mix of long works and one-shots/short stories. - Everything is mostly fluff with a tad of angst and a lot of internalized homophobia conflict.  - Every fic is completed, except for the ones I mention that they are not. - I try my best to lay out the stories in a way that I won’t spoil you the plot but also warning you of some stuff you might don’t like. Either way, all of these fics are correctly tagged by their respective authors/owners, so read at your own risk. For better understanding, in between brackets I denote Rating, Words and quantity of Chapters. - I feel like I should clarify, none of these are narrated in the singular first person. None of that “And I told him...”, no. 

Long fics

a dream always the same (T, 99k, 35 chapters) What happened in those few weeks between the Battle of Starcourt and the Byers leaving Hawkins. Literally a satisfying and very needed fill in of season three, with a good dose of Mike’s thoughts and conflict. Mike’s characterization is specially amazing in this one. The writing style is amazing and I know the author put everything into making it historically accurate, and it was really sweet. You probably read it, it’s by the amazing sevensided here on Tumblr🧡

Spring Break (T, 120k, 14/15 chapters) The slowburn of my dreams. Lots of internalized conflict and conflict with each other. Conflict within the Party (uhh kind of), conflict with Mike and Will. Byers family has moved and the kids are visiting! Chaos. Characterization is on point. Yeah, I know it’s unfinished, but the fourteenth chapter actually serves as a pretty nice ending. 

This is where it starts (M, 148.8k, 24 chapters) Aged up characters. The Party is in college and Will disappears again, but now it’s different. Mike knows he didn’t vanish from thin air, and the discovery he and the Party end up making is pretty insane. Mystery solving/fantasy/third dimension, throw in a bit of D&D and Mike realizing some shit, and you get this marvelous fic. It’s a breath of fresh air. The world building is definitely one of the elements that stands out the most, because it’s very nicely described, it sounds like a dream and it’s completely immersive. Absolute gem of a fic. 

there’s a Starman waiting in the sky (M, 30.6k, 8 chapters) Do I need to say anything? Will is out there living his best life and Mike realizes that wow, umm, maybe his best friend looks a bit too nice with that costume... and wait, is he getting horny? It’s actually really fun and sexy.

The Evening Speaks (T, 23k, 7 chapters) In where Mike is a late-night college radio host and Will is the art student that stays up till late to catch up with Wheeler on the Mic. They flirt through songs y’all, this one is really sweet. 

heads or tails? (E, 24k, 3 chapters) Aged up characters. I know most people don’t enjoy sex in fics and with specific characters but this one is insanely well written. It’s a slowburn that commits to the tension and with every word you are grasping and anticipating their next move. I think you can find the author here on Tumblr as yousaidyes🧡

The Man of Average (M, 56.7k, 5/? chapters) Aged up characters. No but you don’t understand, the writing here is absolute gourmet. The story is exciting as well, it’s super interesting. Weirdly enough, for being very aged up characters, they are well characterized but they don’t feel like teenagers. They are naturally Mike and Will. The author really captured Mike and Will’s essence. I know, it’s unfinished and it’s updated very rarely, but this is the typical fic you can’t believe someone just posted on the internet for free. I will say though, I think it’s definitely not for everyone. Read at your own risk.

Heartstrings (E, 82.8k, 24/? chapters) Aged up characters. By the same author of The Man of Average. A collection of memories, the road to Mike and Will’s happy ever after. And fucking hell!!!!! You’ll cry and get angry, you’ll cheer for them, then you’ll want to crash their faces together because god dammit you love each other!!! But yeah, same thing here. The writing and the way the story is laid out as a nonlinear narrative is brilliant. And I also think this is one of the best Will versions I’ve read. The author might as well be the og creator of this two characters tbh. You can find the author here as mylesimeblr🧡

Sinners behind the walls (T, 1.5k, 1/1) And because I can’t stop recommending this author, a little thing of Mike tormenting himself but also being too deeply committed to Will. 

The Red Envelope series (T/E, 167K, two completed works) Something happens that Will thought was impossible and from there, pure drama and romance. Anything by this author has the potential to become your absolute favorite fic, but this series in particular is amazing. I doubt that any of you haven’t read this, but it doesn’t hurt to put it in this list. I’m pretty sure the author is serendipitous-magic on Tumblr🧡

A New Fight series (T, 91k, two completed works, one WIP) And finally the Star Wars AU that we all needed. But this isn’t your typical “Mike is Han”, “Will is Leia” and “El is Luke”, it’s way more interesting than that, and the author has appropriated the Star Wars world like no other. I’ll admit I’m not a 100% fluent in SW lore but this is amazing to me either way. This author is also on Tumblr, tea-for-one-please🧡

- Yes, most of these are (if not all), in a way, canon compliant/canonverse/canon continuation into fanon. (In a way)

One-shots and short stories

Sundae for Two, Please (G, 4.8k) Steve being the supportive friend and older brother these kids collectively need. (not Jonathan erasure, we love him). Steve is very sweet himself, and this little cute thing through his POV is gorgeous. Yes, it’s byler.

Backstage (T, 10k, 2/2) Jonathan, you forgot to mention to Will how hot your new band’s guitarist is, dude. Now he’s hyperventilating and weirdly flirting with him in the corner. Background Stonathan because why not.

102 Peach Street (G, 3.8k) Established relationship, but not only that, they are married :’’))) PURE fluff. Extreme fluffiness. Diabetes. 

sweatshirts and bottled up feelings (T, 3.2k) Or, Mike thinks that the sweatshirt Will wears looks insanely good on him. And kitchens are for lovers. 

kiss it better (T, 16.3k) Basically one of the best character studies of a few precise moments of Mike and Will’s relationship and feelings. 

will wonders ever cease (T, 11.3k) #i ship will and happiness. Omfg what a beautiful piece of fanfic. Will centric, this kid really deserves all the good in the world.

The Calm After the Storm (T, 1.6k) Tooth rotting fluff, boyfriends in love. Boyfriends being lazy, cuddling, love words, kisses. Boys loving each other’s company... Basically, Mike and Will in their element. What more can you ask for?

neither of us ready to let go (T, 4.8k) That scene from season three, but a bit of a fix it. 

Still in love (G, 1k) Domestic, married life au fluff. Y’all, I’m a sucker for established Byler, even if I can’t find many fics with it. But this is very sweet. It takes place in 2020, but I don’t think there are any mentions of the COVID-19 crisis that I remember.

I Nver Find Out ‘Til I’m Head Over Heels (G, 12.5K) Classic 5+1 fic. If you haven’t read it, where have you been? This is your moment. In where Mike keeps inviting Will to the school dances and Will thinks it’s just a joke until he realizes it’s not. 

Before You’re Gone (T, 5.9k) Will is leaving Hawkins and Mike thinks this is a great moment for a confession. This one I discovered last friday, thank you friend @magicalfairy 💗

You’re weird Wheeler (M, 4.5k) Mike unintentionally starts a tradition of going to each other to talk about their sexual encounters just after they finish. Will keeps getting more explicit with the details he shares, and he makes his best friend interested. This one is really fun y’all.

Out-Of-Town Friends (N/R, 4.6K) It’s not rated. I haven’t re- read it but I’d say it would probably fall in a T rating. So cute!! Will has new friends and sneaks off every friday and the Party doesn’t know where he is going, so Mike decides to follow him and is surprised. 

Snowed Under (G, 1.3k) By the same author of The New Fight series. Mike is spending christmas by himself in college because a snowstorm hits Chicago and Nancy can’t drive to see him, but then he has a surprise visitor. Ahhh just a lil sweet holiday fic. Super cute. 

you love me anyway series (T, 7.1k, three completed works) Literally just the cutest thing ever. Established Byler. Will loves to take pictures and he loves taking pictures of Mike. It’s adorable. 

you wanna be friends forever (i can think of something better) (T, 9k) This one is so amazing. So. Amazing. From Will’s POV, my kid deserves the world and he gets it. 

okay not to be okay (T, 4.9k) Mike is a bit sad but then everything is okay. 

can’t hold out forever (G, 18.4k) Y’all!!!!! 5+1 sweetness. Mike has been falling in love since kindergarten. And it’s long af, you’ll enjoy it. 

even if it takes forever (G, 1.3k) College short AU, they miss each other, they love each other, they promise all to each other. It is sappy y’all.

clear as day (N/R, 18.4K, 4 chapters) It’s not rated, but I’d say it falls in the T category. Strangers to friends to lovers. And also, everyone is pretty gay; we have our dynamic trio Mike, Max and El as disaster lesbians (and gay). Will works at the library and he is also gay. Lucas and Dustin and Will are the best friends we needed. It’s very sweet and the Party is kind of formed here!

I went overboard with the one-shots, so you must have realized how much I love long one-shots and I favor them over long works lmao but they are all amazing!!! If it’s on this list, I probably read it at 2 am, sobbing in my bed. So. Hope you enjoy it☺️🧡

My 2021 Favorites

Following the lead of @thedarkplume and sharing my favorite reads from 2021. Thanks to all of you that blog and share your stories with us. I read tons this year, and honestly, there were only a couple that I didn’t finish. Appreciate the time you all take to craft such amazing work!

It’s important to note – ALL of these blogs are 18+. Follow this guidance and don’t read if you’re not old enough (you'll be blocked for sure). These are in no particular order, they’re all fantastic.

Ok, here we go…

@k-evans-writes, Higher Love – Chris Evans x OFC Nickie Morrison. This series is SO fun and Chris and Nickie’s world is the best! Great character development, our hero and heroine are trying to navigate the terrain of a relationship between two mega stars. I sit impatiently every week waiting for the next chapter 😊

@stargazingfangirl18 is one of my favorite finds this year. Everything she writes is great but a couple stand out. The first is Taken

Dark!Steve Rogers, Dark!Ransom Drysdale and Dark!Andy Barber. Warning: This is a brutal read and not for everyone. It’s incredibly compelling and well written, but proceed with caution.

My favorite of her work, however, is Necessary Arrangements, a Mob AU series with some of our favorite Chris Evans fictional babes. This story is FANTASTIC. It’s so clever and we learn more each chapter about the “readers” and their relationships. Andy Barber, Ransom Drysdale and Ari Levinson are some bad dudes but don’t give up on them – each chapter we get more insight into their stories and who they really are. And there is some delicious smut to be had! I highly recommend this one, don’t miss it, it’s great.

The next one is one that’s ongoing and she gave us a DOUBLE CLIFFHANGER before the holidays, so I’ve been knee-deep in suspense waiting impatiently for more! I am so damned excited for more of this, I took out a cone in the Chick-Fil-A drive thru when I saw on my phone that a chapter of this story had posted (it was one that had already posted but I’m so READY for more!). This story belongs to @river-soul, The Witness. Your testimony is set to put away one of Boston’s biggest mobsters - your former boss (Ari Levinson!). Stuck on an isolated farm with Marshal Steve Rogers, unexpected threats and complications arise as the trial approaches. Andy Barber is your attorney and you’ll meet some other friends from the MCU as well. This is such an incredibly crafted story and the characters are so well defined. There is a ton of suspense, you're constantly uneasy waiting for what's ahead and Reader really gets put through the ringer – such an excellent read. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE. P.S. Everything @river-soul writes is amazing so be sure to check out her masterlist.

@mycapt-ohcapt, Escape with Chris Evans – Chris Evans x OFC Nicole Frasier – When Nicole wins a contest to visit an escape room with Chris Evans, she never imagined what might happen and what the future would hold. Great chronicle of the development of a relationship, characters are well written. Gets kind of angsty but such a good read. I discovered this fic on WattPad, you can find it there as well.

@rodrikstark, Everything and Beyond – Steve Rogers x Reader – This is a sweet, fluffy budding romance that makes you root for this couple to get together. Very enjoyable read.

@avintagekiss24, We Loved With a Love That Was More Than Love – Steve Rogers x black!reader, but this story has ALL our fave CE characters in the house. This is ethereal, elegant and well-written with some world class smut that is truly the ultimate fantasy. Compelling and twisty. Your panties are going to be toast after this one.

@heliOs-writes, Slow Like Honey – This is another writer I’m so glad I found. Absolutely stellar, every work on the masterlist. Eloquent writing and well thought-out stories and characters on the whole list. This particular story is Steve Rogers and his daughter’s first grade teacher and their budding romance. I love how Steve is portrayed here, flawed but so sweet. It’s a real, slow love story with great character development. I love the way Steve is portrayed in all these stories, so good! And some delicious smut along the way!

Another of my favorite writers (though I don’t think she’s writing any more) is @tropicalcap. The only way I know to describe her storytelling is that it’s effortlessly beautiful. I love, love, love her portrayal of Steve Rogers in all her stories. ALL of them. And they’re all amazing, read them all, but particularly I love (and re-read often) On the Line. I laugh out loud every time, it’s so good. Steve Rogers x Reader throughout her stories have this passionate relationship that’s chill and intense at the same time, and there’s so much beautiful, languid lovemaking – she’s just such a good writer!

@jtargaryen18 – She is one of my very favorite writers. One of her fics was the first I read when I found Tumblr, and she just keeps writing great stories. Though they’re all good, this year I loved and recommend

1) All Heaven in a Rage – this is Steve Rogers x Reader. What starts out as an honest intention to help a girl who has caught Steve’s eye following the Snap becomes a dangerous obsession. While this is a Dark!Steve Rogers, I think it’s such a great and realistic portrayal of what it must have been like for the Avengers after the snap. After the devastating lost suffered at the hands of Thanos, Steve is distraught and he just wants to save someone – his intentions are pure, even if they’re twisted. Such a good story!

2) Out of Darkness – Curtis Everett x Reader – This one is still in progress. Full disclosure – I haven’t seen Snowpiercer. I’m seriously squeamish when it comes to graphic violence and my friends tell me there’s lots of it, but I get the gist of the story and I love this depiction of Curtis. It’s difficult in such a dystopian society but our reader is truly a badass and I love her moxie in this story. Lots of suspense as Reader earns Curtis's trust and they slowly fall in love with plenty of angst and suspense, so good!!!

3) His Inheritance – Mobster Steve Rogers x Mobster Daughter Reader – This series is ongoing and boy, is it a good one. Steve Rogers is at his mobster best in this one but our reader gives him more than he bargained for. She’s not going quietly into the dark world of the mafia. Love this story so far and literally refresh my phone once an hour to see if there’s a new chapter.

My last recommendations are from one of my very favorite writers on Tumblr that wrote my very favorite fanfic ever, Stark Spangled Banner. The writer is what-is-your-plan-today and her OFC Katie Stark and her love story with Steve Rogers is the most incredible thing of beauty. It is truly a writing masterpiece as it weaves through the MCU and its many movies while watching Steve and Katie and their blossoming relationship that becomes tried and true, unconditional love. It’s just so frickin’ good, READ IT. Everything she writes is wonderful but in particular this year I loved

1) Riding High and Riding On – Frank Adler x OFC Felicity “Fliss” Gallagher – This is another fantastic love story with twists and turns, some suspense and some absolutely delicious smut. Fliss is tough, brave and vulnerable, all at once, and she manages to find the soft side of Frank and wrap him around her finger. Love this couple and I was so glad she gave us a sequel.

2) Murder, He Wrote – DARK Ransom Drysdale x Investigative Reporter Reader – This is a twisty, turny dark story that hooks you and then throws you an incredible curve at the end. Our reader has written a story about Ransom Drysdale that he wasn’t thrilled with, and he decides pay her back. Riveting and addictive, you’ll really love this one. Then, you have to read the sequel -

3) Consciousness of Guilt – Andy Barber x Reader from Murder, He Wrote. I love how this relationship develops. It’s so realistic and sweet. Andy is damaged and lonely and our reader is still reeling from her experience with Ransom, and their relationship is a slow developing burn that includes some yummy smut along the way. I love how the characters grow together and are finally able to trust and love - even though there are challenges up until the end. It’s ongoing but close to the end and it’s a must read!

I have to give honorable mention to Leave No One Behind (Ari Levinson x OFC Hannah Horowitz), Too Loose and You’ll Lose It (Jake Jensen x Stella ‘Arty’ Stevenson) and Rock & Roll People in a Disco World (Paul Diskant x Reader). @WIYPT-Writes is the queen of the OFC – she creates people that I think about long after I’m done reading her work. I’m in awe of her talent and look forward to what she has to offer in 2022.

1. Do you have any one-shot recommendations while I obsessively wait for the next chapter? 2. I’ve seen bits of TLE2 and TLE4 but any chance of a tiny tiny tiny tiny sneak peak of something to look forward to in TLE3?

Hi there! So, as far as one-shot recommendations, unfortunately I have hardly been reading any fanfic while I’ve been working on TLE2, so I'm rather short on new recs. If anyone wants to share their faves, please do!!

I will enthusiastically recommend Large Heart, Tiny Photographs by @the-dream-team. Even though it’s technically multi-chapter, each chapter reads as a standalone, and it’s utterly heart-wrenching and beautiful. 😭❤️

Moving on to part 2 of this ask…

Since I did decline to share a spoiler for TLE2 earlier this week, I will take this opportunity to redeem myself with some choice TLE3 content. 😅

It was actually quite difficult to find a snippet from TLE3 that was a) actually written and b) not hugely spoilery for the ending of TLE2...but you know how everyone has that proverbial devil and angel on their shoulders, giving them advice? I have a confession to make: I am cursed with only devils. Devils on every shoulder. Behold, a conversation:

Devil on my left shoulder: Release a fake snippet of James and Florence and pretend they’re still together in TLE3 just to watch the world burn 😈😈😈

Me: um, ok sure that is an option. Or, hear me out, we could instead share a nice little snippet that is both genuine and doesn't give too much away—

Devil on my right shoulder (in a gremlin voice): RELEASE THE JILY KISSSSSS 😈😈😈

Me: …I need a new brain, pls.

Anyway, I've been sitting on this snippet for actual years and it's oddly enough the least spoilery thing I have written for TLE3, so have at it, folks. Think of it as me giving you something to hold onto through these dark, Florence-infested days ahead. 😉

(I got carried away and didn't want to cut it off so you get the whole dang scene...I better be forgiven for the great anti-Florence uprising of 2021 is all I'm saying 🤣🤣🤣)

Excerpt from The Last Enemy: Marauders' End (TLE3)

“Well, you are Head Boy now.”

James slumped his elbows onto the low wall of the rooftop and let out a despondent noise. “Don’t remind me.”

“Oh, come on,” said Lily, walking over to him. “Sirius was just teasing earlier. You’re not actually upset about it, are you?”

James straightened up a bit and shot her a quick, reassuring smile that made her heart flutter. “‘Course not,” he said. “It’s just — I don’t get it. I’ve spent my entire career finding new and inventive ways to break the rules, and now I’m supposed to enforce them? I can’t imagine what Dumbledore was thinking.”

“Well, I can,” said Lily, and James looked at her in surprise. “It’s a difficult time in the world right now, isn’t it? I rather suspect the Headmaster was looking for different qualities in his Head Boy than mere ‘rule enforcer.’ He has a whole army of prefects and teachers prepared to do that unhappy job. I think he was looking for someone who could be a role model, on a broader level.”

“And that’s supposed to be me?”

Lily smiled at his dubious expression. Cocky, full-of-himself, Quidditch Hero Potter wasn’t sure he was up to the job. There was a time when she never would’ve believed it, but over the past year as she’d gotten to know him better, she’d realized that behind all the posturing and performing, the Quidditch swagger and the hair ruffling, was a boy who was desperately concerned with doing what was right.

“Yeah,” she said after a moment. “That’s supposed to be you.”

James shrugged again. “I don’t get it.”

“Because you’re still thinking about breaking rules…but I’m thinking of the boy who never once hesitated to call someone out for anti-Muggle speech. Who never once uttered the M-word, even when it was considered cool and edgy.”

“Well, that’s just being a decent—”

“I’m thinking of the boy,” said Lily loudly, “who [REDACTED FOR TLE2 SPOILERS].”

“I — you knew about that?”

“I’m thinking of the boy,” Lily went on in a softer voice, “who doesn’t like to talk about that Special Services to the School award sitting in the trophy cabinet.”

James did not have a response to this one.

“I can imagine exactly what Dumbledore was thinking,” concluded Lily, “and I’m really glad he chose you.”

James looked as though he wanted to make a joke, but couldn’t quite figure out how to get there. “Well — er — I’m really glad he chose you, too.” He ran a hand through his hair, and it was such a familiar, sweet gesture — one that used to infuriate her, no less — that she couldn’t help but stifle a giggle.

“What?” demanded James. Then he withdrew his hand from his hair and glowered at it as though it had misbehaved. “Oh. I’m doing it again. I don’t mean to.”

“Oh, with hair like that I expect it’s hard to resist.” Lily stood on tiptoes and mussed his hair herself. “Don’t touch it, it’s perfect.”

It was as though Lily had vacated her body and some foreign, flirty version of herself had taken over. As she rolled back onto her heels, she realized they were standing very close; he was gazing at her with a slightly bemused expression on his face, lips parted in a question he didn’t seem able to formulate. God, he had beautiful lips, all soft and curious.

Before she could stop herself, she leaned up and pressed her mouth firmly to his.

It wasn’t much of a kiss — she’d somewhat overestimated the space between them and thus smashed against him more forcefully than planned — and he’d hardly had a moment to realize what was happening before she’d jumped back, her hand flying to her mouth in embarrassment.

“Oh!” she gasped. “I’m sorry.”

James blinked at her. “That’s — that’s not something you’re supposed to apologize for.”

Lily didn’t respond; her hummingbird heart was fluttering about and all she could do was stand there with her hand over her mouth, staring at him, eyes wide, breath caught in her throat. The foreign, flirty creature had deserted her and once again she was merely Lily, seventeen years old and horribly, bone-shakingly nervous.

His mouth curved into that crooked half-smile of his and he stepped towards her. Slowly, he took her hand and guided it away from her mouth, then placed his palm along the line of her chin, his thumb brushing the slope of her cheek. Her gaze was locked on his as his eyebrows lifted in an infinitesimal arch: a question. Her chin dipped an answer.

And then he kissed her. A slow and gentle kiss, with none of the harsh urgency of her impulsive peck, but rather as though this — this perfect state of being — was as natural as the spin of the earth, as though this had always been here and always would be. They had all the time in the world; they need not hurry.

His hand slid to her waist and with a gust of breath she folded her arms around his neck, pressing herself deeper into the kiss. The evening enveloped them in its warmth; he was night and she was stars, and the wind that blew across the sky was the breath in his lungs, the roar of the city the sigh in her chest.

At last they pulled apart.

“Oh,” breathed Lily.

And then James began to laugh, a soft, quiet rumble that shuddered his shoulders.

“Are you — are you laughing?”

James inclined his brow towards her, solemnly shaking his head, trying to swallow a fresh burst of giggles.

“What is so funny?” Lily demanded, torn between amusement and mortification.

“I’m sorry,” he said, trying to maintain a straight face and failing. “It’s just…I have wanted to do that for so long.”

Lily leaned back. “Oh really?”

“Oh yes.”

“And…did it live up to your expectations?”

“Oooh yes.”

Then Lily started to laugh as well; she pressed her forehead to his chest, trying to muffle her giggles. They laughed until they slid to the floor under the weight of their mirth…then they sat there, collapsed into each other, their peals of laughter ringing into the night.

“We just kissed,” said Lily faintly, wiping her eyes.

“Yeah,” agreed James. “Sure did.”

Hiii i love your childhood friends persona 4 fanfic, i have a question about it, is yosuke calling yu partner gonna come before or during canon cause thats my fave part of the game lol have a lovely rest of the day/week! : D

I’m super glad that you like it!! It’s honestly probably my favorite multi-chapter fic that I’ve written so far. 

And to be honest, I’ve only briefly thought about that. If it does happen, it would be after the start of canon - that being said, I only intend to go a few days into canon before ending the story (Like either the day of or the day after Yosuke accepts his Shadow). That’s definitely something that I enjoy too and wouldn’t mind including in the story - but there’s going to have to be some consideration as to where it would fit in. I have a couple of ideas, but it would be in either the last or the second to last chapter.

ahshhsdf anon you have NO idea how difficult this one was to answer. I honestly can’t pick one, and I’m confident that there’s dozens more I’m not thinking of right now, but these are the first few I thought of that had serious emotional impacts on me, so:

So Wise We Grow, by Deastar (Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Spock) - I dream of writing this well someday

Well-Versed Replacement, by sElkieNight60 (Batfam, mostly Tim & Bruce centric) - honestly most of @selkienight60 works could probably be on my list of favorites, but this one is a true work of art. Genuinely left a little aching piece of itself in my soul in the very best way

Lagavulin and Guinness, by Snarfle (Kingsman, Harry Hart/Eggsy) - I think I went like a week after finishing this one without reading anything else, because this one was such a gut punch of a story that nothing else was satisfying until my brain had some time to recover

Honorary mention for Namesake Necklace, by @wiceba (Harry Potter, Harry Potter & Severus Snape) - this one is an honorary mention only because I never finished it. It was still being written when I started it, and I eagerly was following along, and then at some point I drifted out of the fandom and I never got back to it, even though I still mean to someday. But the half or so that I read was incredibly well-written and satisfying, and still holds a special place in my heart. part of me might be putting off finishing it just because I don’t want to say goodbye lmao.

⏱ What’s the fic you spent the most time on? (Was it worth it lol)

Probably The Long Journey Home!! I spent AGES fussing over this one, and yes, I do think it was worth it :) I feel like my writing has improved since then, like I don’t think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written, but it is still one of my favorites. Always Another Blood Spilled, Another Blood Shared also gets a shoutout because I hand wrote all 7k words of it before typing it out. It was like 15 notebook pages, front and back 🙃

Right now? Probably the one I started last night because someone in the server said they wanted to see Jason stress baking while Tim is missing, which took immediate root in my brain. Longer term? The Days of Theft (No More). Chapter 4 is fighting me a bit but my joy has yet to die out, and I’m so excited to get to where I know it’s going.

Description:

It is necessary to read or watch ‘Attack on Titan’ prior this book to be able to understand the story. This one can be said that is half canon verse half Alternate Universe since Levi jumps to our universe straight from the rumbling. This is one shot I did for Rivamika week. It’s mostly fluff and a little comedy.
