Is there a man more maligned in all of Star Trek canon than Miles O’Brien? I think not. His Intergalactic Injustice And Suffering Punch Card has more holes in it than your average fishing net

rewatching star trek next gen and captain picard just went from being physically and psychologically tortured by the cardassians in one episode to arguing with holodeck escapee professor moriarty about whether or not it would be ethical to try and bring moriarty’s girlfriend into the real world in the next. unparalleled television!!!

NONE OF THIS IS HECKING “CANON”!!!!!!!!!!
when I’m feeling REALLY quirky hypothetical with au I think about Like aged up kiddos Like Adult age Like Philippa and Edward out in the delta quadrant?????? Searching for their sister and what all they’d stumble across and recollect from their childhood Voyage out there (i don’t think id draw on THEIR recollection outside of the last season because they were only five lol and that’s REACHING) you could also pull from prodigy or the first splinter timeline stuff (beyerverse) but definitely dealing with some of the repercussions of voyagers Transactions
I’ve like NEAR THE BEGINNING OF THE AU wanted to use seskas son as a rival of sorts,,,,,, I think he’d easily rise to power given hes part cardassian and smart and also bullied for being a halfbreed and everything and takes advantage of the kazon by using his wits and proves he’s great at outsmarting opponents blahblahblah USUAL ANTAGONIST STUFF,,,,,,, you could also theorize culluh wouldn’t LET the other lads be mean to his halfbreed son So alternatively hes super spoiled and inherits power idk!!! But I was thinking Ed would have had previous interactions with him given Ed lives in the DQ???? And they don’t like each other but I feel like they’d have some ambiguous energy between them hahaha.
I’d also thought about ummmmmmm utilizing borg baby Rose all grown up and maybe giving a silly excuse of her having hyperthymesia or something either from having been borg or maybe a species trait or maybe individualistic to her! But her finding and recognizing THEM and it takes a minute for it to click,,, but itd be funny cute if she became like their substitute sister while they find Amelia lol, and she could navigate them through the DQ,,,,,, but I bet Rose would wanna go back with them to find Janeway :3 shed Be an adult by this time as well so it’s not TOO horrible for her to want to depart from her biological family and everything. I think she’d just wanna thank kathryn maybe join starfleet for all that they did for her. Idk if her name would still be Rose but in this hypothetical I supposed shed REMEMBER being called that :D
Another fun evil hypothetical id wanted to approach was a VERY INDULGENT Neelix/klingon lady in Prophecy???? Next gen :) Neelix wouldnt know about it, itd Be in the circumstance of philippa and Ed finding the Klingons out in the DQ and there’s this gal on the ship there whos weird for klingon standards and super happy and loves cooking and smiles all the time and laughs when she growls and has whiskers and bkahblhabkbalh. But like NONE OF THEM say shes A halfbreed. The idea being her mother scares everyone into accepting her as klingon or she’ll kill them lmao. And eventually they’d wriggle the truth out of the mother that her daughter is neelixs and subsequently half talaxian. :)
#and it all stays gen plat because I’m indecisive <3#and also don’t wanna pull away from the sibling dynamic lol#threshold au

Top 3 Star Trek Deep Space Nine alien races
By Ames
On our last day visiting the eponymous space station, we’ve got one more spotlight blogpost for you. We’ve already covered our majorest minor characters and the superest villains, and now we’re taking a step back to announce our favorite alien races from Deep Space Nine. Just like we did for The Original Series and The Next Generation, we’ve got some hot takes and some even hotter omissions. Sorry, to any Trill lovers out there.
DS9 really capitalized on building out some aliens we’ve met in previous series as well as developing new societies that motivate the series, effect change from the Gamma Quadrant, and notoriously change everything. So read on below for A Star to Steer Her By’s respective top three species and listen to some additional banter over on this week’s podcast episode (discussion at 1:06:59). Chula!

Ames – A Dominion settlement that doesn’t cost $787M
Cardassians
Vorta
Breen
Let me kick things off with some Dominion allies that always have you coming back for more. We’ve discussed how three-dimensional our spoon-headed friends became after Deep Space Nine continued to deepen their culture, but let’s not forget how good the reception of Weyoun was that the show went out of its way to bring him back as numerous clones of himself, or how we may not even know what our helmeted, buzzing enemies even look like but every single thing we learn about them ends up absolutely changing everything!
—
Chris – Aliens we met in TNG, but better
Bajorans
Cardassians
Ferengi
Chris wants to highlight three familiar races we first met in Next Gen to entirely different levels of success, but who were significantly fleshed out more in DS9. The occupied and occupier races from the series started off with already solid foundations that the slightly more serialized show was able to build upon to the enjoyment of fans who like a people to feel real and flawed. And then there’s our big-lobed, froglike friends who were an absolute joke throughout TNG but were thankfully fixed by giving them a society with a series-long arc to explore!
—
Jake – Space Jesus, take the wheel!
Prophets and pah wraiths
Changelings
Lurians
Jake’s three favorites are all DS9 originals that effectively take the driver’s seat throughout the entire series and guide the plot to its ultimate conclusion. From the wormhole aliens who started things off in “Emissary” and were at the heart of the throughline of the whole shebang, to the shapeshifters who were puppetmastering the Dominion and we later learn “are everywhere,” to everyone’s favorite barfly who is a constant and reliable presence giving the background of the show some consistency… when you could shut that guy up, that is.
—
Caitlin – Rules are made to be written in your favor
Tosk
Cardassians
Vorta
Caitlin’s picks all feature societies with strict systems that hold a mirror up to our own societies. We’re big fans on this podcast of “Captive Pursuit,” and we cheered when Sisko and Odo bent the rules just enough for Tosk to escape his hunters. We’re also deeply fascinated by the hypocrisy of the Cardassian Central Command, which prejudges your trial, punishes you for bearing hybrid children, and exiles you for… well, everything Garak did. And who can’t love the species of middle managers, so compelling they kill the same guy five times and still can’t get enough?!
— We’re closing up the jumja stick stand, announcing last call at Quark’s, and saying goodbye to our favorite pylon (obviously pylon 3) as we also near the end of Voyager over on the podcast. We’ve got more blogposts to share before we hit the Alpha Quadrant, so keep up with us here, listen along on SoundCloud or wherever you listen to podcasts, like us on Facebook and Twitter, and if you wanted the Trill to be on these lists, maybe don’t rewrite their society with every single episode, okay?

Sidebar: The Maquis were just as upstandingly ethical as Starfleet, their values just didn't align with Starfleet's.
I may stand for Truth, Justice, and The American Way, but if "The American Way" means that a bunch of minorities, queer folk, and women get to be oppressed while only white Republican men get to actually be free, then I guess I'm fighting with the minorities, queer folk, and women.
A bunch of the Maquis, both on Voyager and DS9, were once Starfleet officers. We saw the conflict that a Federation citizen goes through when confronted by the reasons the Maquis started even back in Next Gen (though, IMHO, that episode completely punted and, while Wesley's journey took a satisfying turn, the episode itself kinda fizzled out).
My thoughts on the matter are thus: By the time Next Gen came along, the Federation started to forget that sometimes the needs of the One outweigh the needs of the Many. And the people who'd been raised to believe that the Federation and, by extension, Starfleet was all about standing up for the little guy and training all their lives to do just that saw what was happening along the Federation/Cardassian border, watched the nightmare that was the occupation of Bajor, and when the Federation opted to negotiate with a fascist, militant government with no intention of ever treating the people it conquered with respect and dignity, they kinda rage quit and started their own neo-military organization with blackjack and hookers.
To be fair re: Voyager, a lot of the questions it poses on are less “what’s the most ethical option in this scenario?” and more “what ethically dubious actions will people justify for their own survival?”
I think that interpretation could work BUT they don’t portray the crew as ethically dubious. They portray them as upstanding starfleet officers (even the ones who were maquis).
I think the writers and actors had lots of ideas that could have been cooler than the end product. Rick Berman was a huge issue they couldn’t do them! And the politics of the show are a lot more regressive (in my mind) than other Star Trek.
They had a lot of opportunities to do cool shit and missed so many of them. Kate Mulgrew is an incredibly charismatic actress and they tied both hands behind her back.

Here's one bad take
Cardassians are reptilians right? Except they have mammary glands, hair, and apparently no issues having children with other "non-reptilian" races. Ofc that could be alien biology being alien but let's assume for a moment that they're actually mammals. Only that they are mammals with thick scaly skin. Now that doesn't seem right, but please consider: Pangolins.
OH SHIT. This is a superb take. Easily the best thing I've seen all day. Thank you

Theres one that focuses on that obscure character in one of the DS9 episodes. The cardassian kid who grew up on bajor. It follows what happens to him after he leaves with his biological father. And it really delves into world-building of Cardassia, and their social constructs. And how they go through the Dominion, and whats that like down on the ground. Its one of the best DS9 novels out there and i reeeeally recommended it!
Theres another (that i havent read yet) where Q hosts Picard's wedding to Dr. Crusher! Who are the ultimate OTP!
And also another DS9 novel about Bashir in section13!!!
I need everyone to know that reading the Star Trek official tie-ins books is an out-of-body experience.
I have read like 4 of them and they're all absurd. They're fanfiction with a cover and an official stamp on it.
Q and Picard fight for Mrs. Troy's affection and it's about as terrifying as it sounds. Kirk and the Enterprise get stranded on a weird planet and the crew includes a sexy cat girl (who was also in the animated series which is also a trip). There's a duology where Kirk is basically a damsel in distress and nothing makes sense and I think there's non-con between him and the Gary Stu villain?
I don't even know why I am thinking about them right now but they are wild.

Don Ivan Punchatz art for “Worlds of the Federation.”
The book was made at an interesting moment, after the first season of TNG (so Ferengi, Bynars, Betazoids, and Benzites are here, but not later season Next Gen critters like the Borg, Cardassians, or Bajorans), and before the draconian canon policy was instituted by Gene’s attorney, so it was assumed the animated series was canon (it would be re-canonized circa DS9). It also used information from the John M. Ford and Diane Duane novels, including their explanation for forehead/non forehead Klingons. It also calls the Klingon homeworld Kling (...uuuugh) as it was called once, and only once, in the first season TNG episode, “Heart of Glory.”
