The next few hours were a blur, everything happened so fast, you couldn’t process it through the tears and anxiety. Pope had fallen, and the cross came soon after- you all successfully dodged it, but as you were figuring out what to do with the cross and how to carry the heavy-ass pure gold cross, Pope had an allergic reaction to the wasps that stung him.
JJ’s cousin Ricky came in clutch giving him a pediatric dose of epinephrine, it had everyone freaking out for a couple half an hour on whether or not he was going to make it. Thankfully he was revived but unfortunately because of how hyped up he was due to the side effects, he insisted and driving and crashing Kie’s dad's truck straight into an oak tree.
So much for him ripping the ears off of everyone inside of the car.
After everyone safely exited the car John B tried stopping him from getting run over by a semi, you noticed the person driving the truck and the person in the passenger seat as Rafe and Renfield who were driving from the direction of the church.
It was gone.
Pope was pissed as hell but coming back to the church and not seeing that cross there had lit a fire of determination in him. You all went straight to the Chateau for the Twinkie and drove back to the road where the accident happened.
“Oh shit!” Kie groaned. “They found the truck.”
Several police cars blocked off the road where it was, John B had no other choice but to stop as Shoupe approached the van.
“Good evening, Officer,” John B squinted as the cop pointed the flashlight into the car.
“Sheriff,” He corrected.
“Speed kills, huh,” John B joked about the scene of the totaled truck.
“I pulled the tags and I know whose truck that is,” Shoupe pointed the flashlight through the driver's seat window and to the back of the truck where Kie was sitting behind the passenger seat in a ball, hiding from view. “Hey, Kie! You drop your weed pen back there?”
“Found it,” Kie gave Shoupe a thumbs up with a weak smile.
Pope who was behind John B’s seat, spoke up between the headrest and the door, “Sheriff, I just wanna say that this is all my fault. She had nothing to do with this, I take a hundred percent full responsibility.”
“Nothing to do with it, huh?” Shoupe scoffed, “You wanna try that again? Your parents reported the truck missing four hours ago and the keys were missing from the house, I’m taking you home or I can pull you all in for leaving the scene of an accident.”
You exhaled stressfully and rubbed your temples, not one day, not one day without a break.
“I gotta deal,” Kie gave you a ‘save me’ look. You sent her a pitiful smile knowing that it wasn't going to go down well for her. “Hit me up later and make sure I’m still alive.”
The rest of you would have to retrieve the cross without her.
The truck that carried the cross had just pulled up to the Cameron house as the five of you did.
“How much you wanna bet Rafe has the cross inside that truck right now?” Pope comments as you all peer over the concrete wall to get a better look at what was going on.
“There’s only one way to find out,” Sarah walks in the direction of the front gate. John B goes after her and catches her before she’s gone.
“Jesus Christ,” You facepalm and lean your head against the wall. You hear Pope and JJ make their own comments in protest of wasting time for declarations of love.
Pope whispers to him as John B limps back to you, JJ, and Pope with a dopey smile, “Do you want me to perform your vows while you’re at it?”
“Did you say ‘be safe’?” JJ asks.
“Could you take any longer?” You drawl out sarcastically. Part of you was actually bitter about your own love life and part of you was concerned about the time frame for whatever Sarah had planned, “What is she doing?”
You could make out her figure sneaking around the truck and shrugging, you could see barely hear her whisper something about keys. You whisper shout for her to come back but she points to the inside. All of you try signaling for her not to but she goes in anyway.
“I told her not to go inside,” John B says.
“Do the birdcall,” Pope tells him, though you're not sure that would help since she was already through the glass doors.
John B cups his hands around his mouth to make Coo-Coo sound but with his hesitation, it sounded nothing like it was supposed to.
“That is not what a bird sounds like,” You judge.
“You try doing something better then.”
“Too late, dipshit, she’s already inside. Maybe next time I’ll do a detailed demonstration for you.”
“Whatever, I’m going over,” John B uses the strength from his arms to push himself up from the top of the wall but a horn was honking from the street. You turn and see the headlights from a golf cart roll up.
“Uh, excuse me, can I help you?” An old white man with a shotgun stops where the four of you were caught in the act of going halfway up the wall. He cocked the gun and chuckles, “I got double-aught bucks in this thing, so, I can’t miss.”
He steps out of the slow vehicle and warns you all to get off the wall, you slip down it with your hands in the air, anxiety creeping in. What if he called the cops? What if he made you all confront Rafe? What if he shot you?
“Sir, It’s not what it seems,” JJ speaks up beside you.
“You all are on the wrong side of the island.” He keeps the long gun pointed at you as he tells you all to get on your knees, “I think I’m gonna call the police.”
“You don’t have to do that, sir,” JJ pleads calmly.
“I’ll decide for myself what I need to do.”
“Sir, Can I just talk to you for a minute?” You stutter a little nervously, there was a chance he would believe a girl more than he would the boys, so you would have to fabricate a story. “Just to explain.”
You get up from your knees slowly, John B tugged at your flannel but you ignored him. “I know what this looks like, but I promise this is all a misunderstanding. We look like some derelict kids from the cut but we weren’t that to Mr. Cameron, he gave me and my brother a job, I did some housework for him and his wife, and my brother did some yard work along with my boyfriend, and our friend. See I’m just going along with their plan to get an associate of theirs, s-some row flowers for his memorial.”
He lets his gun falter, “Now why are you three boys letting this poor girl do all the talking?”
JJ struggles to get himself up from the kneeling position as you back up into his place, “Sorry, sir, you’re right. She’s right, we’ve just had such a hard time dealing with his death-”
You tune out the story he tells the old man who let his guard down with every lie that slipped out of his mouth. In the time JJ came up with a ridiculous tale about where the flowers you were all going to ‘plant for Mr. Cameron’ came from and why it was relevant, Sarah had still not come back. You were getting antsy but you couldn’t let it show in front of the man that was eating up JJ’s lie.
“You smell that right?” JJ asks the man.
He sniffs, “What is that, night-blooming jasmine?”
“No, that’s more like,” JJ thinks about it for a second, he knows nothing about flowers or plants. “Natural Viagra.”
Your eyes widen, “Okay!”
The boys beside you try to get JJ to stop now but the old guy seemed genuinely interested which concerned you more.
“One sniff and bam!” JJ claps his hands, “It’s hammer time you know what I’m saying. Isn’t that right, baby?”
Your jaw drops, one of his arms goes around your shoulders pulling you closer and the other leads the man to his golf cart, like a couple walking out the last guest from a dinner party. John B grabs your wrist and pulls you from under JJ.
“We’ll be quiet, alright, and we’ll finish up here. I’m so sorry to bother you.”
“See that you do,” He seats himself back into the cart and drives off muttering to himself. “I gotta get myself some of that.”
Once he was out of view, JJ hops over the wall, “Let’s go.”
“What the fuck,” You whisper to yourself.
“What the fuck was that for real,” John B helps you climb over before going himself. The four of you hide behind the bushes trying to get a peek or a sign of Sarah anywhere. Rafe comes out of the same doors Sarah once went in.
John B surges forward only to be pulled back by Pope and JJ. “What do we do then?”
“He might have the gun so what’s in our favor?” JJ snaps his fingers to think, “The element of surprise, that’s what’s in our favor right now.”
“He’s leaving, there's not much you can do there,” You tell them. Pope whispers something and seconds later he’s running after the truck and jumping onto whatever he can grab on. “Has everyone lost their minds?”
“We got the house now that Rafes gone, let's storm the fort.”
Noise from the front door caught your attention, Rose and Wheezie had Sarah’s arms around their shoulders. If Sarah wasn’t moving they must have done something to her to knock her out.
“Let’s go!” John B shouts at you and JJ, running after Rose’s car.
“This is so fucked,” You run to the Twinkie to follow after them because there was no way they were going to get Sarah out. John B and JJ were running back as you slowed down for them to get in.
~~~
The sun rose for the next day as John B tailed Rose’s car to where they loaded up ships with cargo. You parked in a semi-discrete area and snuck behind the slow-moving semi that stopped for a security check.
While the guard was busy talking to Rafe, you, JJ, and John B snuck through the metal gate and weaved through large materials meant to fix or be put on the ships. You hide behind some large rusted metal thing that you couldn’t name, watching Rafe proudly talk to the other guys around him.
“God, I hate that guy,” JJ exhaled.
You shifted your attention to where Rose’s car was parked, Sarah was being brought out of the car.
“JJ, we gotta come up with a plan,” John B anxiously stares at the boy. Once again, it was you three alone, probably the worst trio combined. JJ with his plans, John B with the follow-through, and you with the backup in case anyone (meaning either of them) needed it.
“I know, I’m working on it. If we get over to that barge, we go over, we’ll have to get into the water though.”
“That’s fine,” John B replied.
“Then we’re gonna be sitting ducks.”
“It’s like you say you’re thinking but then what comes out of your mouth has no thought behind it at all.”
“Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t have time to get it approved by you first, princess.”
“Apology not accepted, you’re plan sucks, and Sarah’s gonna die,” You clutch your head. “How about-”
“Howdy,” A feminine voice comes up randomly behind you and you almost jump out of your skin.
“Holy shit, girl I almost bitch slapped you to yesterday!” Your hands that were clutching your head were now on your chest. You hug Kie in relief at seeing her alive and present despite the shit her parents gave her.
She chuckled, “Had you scared shitless.”
“How’d you guys find us?” You saw Pope come from the same place she did.
“Geo-located your phone.”
“Smart.”
Observing the state of Pope, John B asked what happened.
“Rafe, Round 3.”
“You freaking kidding me?” JJ grabs Pope to face him but he moves out of his hold.
“This was a tie, is that the cross?”
“Yep, they’re holding Sarah hostage,” John B informs Pope and Kie of the new development.
“We gotta get on that boat, but first we gotta get past the goon squad.”
“Okay, come on,” John B waves over for everyone to follow him but there was no plan. Pope doesn’t move from his spot.
“I have an idea, just trust me.”
John B tries to stop him but Pope reassures him that he’ll meet up with the group after. You just hoped he didn’t get caught in whatever he was planning but then again Pope was smart, he wouldn’t do anything to create attention to himself.
Not a second after you thought about how calculated he was, there was an explosion in the direction where he went. All the crew members bolted to the explosion sight.
“What the hell was that?” You ask Pope who panted from his running.
“That container’s going on the ship, we can get in that way,” He pointed. Thanks to his huge distraction, the path where he was directing you all, was free.
“Poopy, you badass!” You pat him on the shoulder, hyping yourself up to make a run for the said container.
At the entrance of the metal box, JJ pauses, “Did we think this through?”
Pope nods assuredly, “Yes, this is the plan.”
“That’s a trap right there, you see that right?” He points to the container that Pope already climbed on, “We can’t get out once we get in.”
Now that JJ was mentioning it, he was right. This container was going on a ship, God knows where, if you got caught it could be jail time or whatever the punishment was for sneaking onto a ship illegally. Not to mention if Rafe or Rose found you, that would be an execution itself.
“You guys don’t have to come,” John B has a hand on JJ’s shoulder and a hand on yours.
“Right, this is our fight,” Pope agreed.
Doubt clouded your loyalty, but you shook it away. Your friend was on the ship, your brother was going, and Pope needed the support to get the cross. It wouldn’t be fair to leave them now after all you had been through together.
JJ looks to Kie, “Nothing to lose?”
“Nothing to lose.”
John B climbs into the container, Pope helps Kie in.
“All in?” JJ climbed into where Pope once was and reached out a hand for you to take. You slipped your hand into his, letting him pull you up.
Your bodies almost colliding from the momentum of you coming up, your faces inches apart in a second your eyes flicker to his lips, “All in.”
“Y/n, JJ, let’s go!” John B shouts. The sound of heavy footsteps that were no doubt the crew member returning to their posts. You and your friends hide at the very end of the container, behind the dozens of stacked crates.
You saw the sunlight fade as the worker closes the container shut.
Chapter three
Toby didn't eat much of his dinner, he just sat there and watched as his family picked at their food. Not even Lyra ate that much. He assumed she'd tell them about the situation at her job, but in fear of angering their dad, she stayed to herself. That night Toby stared at his ceiling, thinking, wondering. Mr. Cowbells laid next to him. He turned and faced the stuffed cow, furrowing his eyebrows. "Maybe i am t-too old for stupid stuffed toys.." he mumbled to himself, feeling bad almost immediately after. He pulled the cow into a small embrace. "No i take that back i-i didn't mean it, i promise." his leg jerked slightly in distress. He didn't wanna go back to school tomorrow.
Toby fell asleep. His dreams weren't so great. He was being chased in some dark forest, black thin trees stretched for as long as he could see, and that was it. He could see tall figures everywhere he looked. It was just a bunch of black silhouettes. Toby's dream panic mimicked his body, kicking his legs a little and grimacing a lot. The night wasn't so peaceful, honestly.
Toby did manage to get in a few hours of sleep at least, unlike the night before. It was the same routine as always. Get up, get ready, go to school, come home, ect. He didn't ever really catch a break.
The kids in his class started to get even more rude. They mocked his tics, mocked his name. He was more than used to it, though it did annoy the hell out of him.
Before he knew it, Toby was reaching the middle of the school year. Toby was leaving class when he felt a hand slap onto his back with a bunch of laughter echoing the halls. The sudden force was enough to make him jump, looking behind himself only to see a few kids giggling. His eyes were too sensitive to the bright hallway lights.
He chewed the inside of his cheek stressfully. What were they giggling about? Toby rolled his eyes with an audible huff.
Toby kept both of his hands on his bag, heading to the doors to exit the school completely. Suddenly Toby found himself hitting the floor, quite hard too. His papers flew from his bag and a few pencils too. Students trampled his stuff, his homework, textbooks, all of it. They even broke some of his pencils. Someone had tripped him.
Toby's vision was a little blurry, he found himself chewing into his cheek even more from the anger he was experiencing, he could taste blood, which he spat out.
"Aww is ticci gonna cry?"
"He's so red!"
"Embarrassing!"
"I'd hate to be in his shoes, poor thing can't even walk straight"
"hahahahaha"
"HAHAHAHA"
"Stop it! Stop it!!" Toby screamed out, covering his ears. His shouting shocked everyone in the hallway. One of the teachers came pushing past everyone and immediately went to help Toby up, who violently shoved her away. "Don't touch me!" he rubbed his nose, eyes starting to water. "This is-isn't my fault! They shoved me! They broke my things!" he started to shake in anger, hands and vision shivering out of control.
The teacher ripped a note off of his back, reading it. "Oh dear I'm-" she was cut off by him ripping the paper from her hands and grabbing his things from the ground. He shoved it all into his bag, unaware that the note was the reason he was tripped.
Toby pulled his bag over his shoulders and walked out. A fast pace to his step.
Toby made it to the car his mom drove and got in the back seat, slamming the door. The woman looked at him in slight concern. "What's wrong?" she asked. Toby huffed and pulled his bag up, he was still sniffling and seeing red. "Nothing, just drive..please." He mumbled, keeping his bag up to hide himself. The car took off down the school lot and onto the road, the sound of the blinker echoing in his mind as well as everyone's harsh words played on repeat from just a minute ago. Toby pulled his journal, the note falling out that was taped to his back. He hadn't seen it, yanking it from the teacher assuming it was one of his work papers she picked up for him. He read it.
'Kick the freak' it read, in scribbled child-like handwriting. He was currently hidden behind his bag so it wasn't like his mom could see it, but his face faded to a dull expression, shoulders dropping from their tense state. Something about that made him feel very crushed. He felt as if the world was falling around him.
It was just a simple note, but he read it as if every bad name someone could get called was written into it. Toby never did realise how hard something could hit until now.
NINETEEN YEARS LATER
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
"𝕺𝖐𝖆𝖞, 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖌𝖔𝖙 everything you n- DAMON JAMES SNAPE IF YOU TRY THAT AGAIN YOU WON'T BE GOING TO HOGWARTS AT ALL YOU HEAR ME!" I shouted at my son as he pushed Seraphina on the stairs. Damon and Sera quickly ran down the rest of the stairs, probably to continue the roughhousing downstairs. I turned back to my daughter, Davina. "You have everything you need?"
"Yes mum." Davina said impatiently. "Can we go now?"
"Almost, go and get your stuff and put it in the car." I said, giving her a gentle push and then went back into her room.
Severus dashed into the room, looking frenzied. This was always his least and favorite time of the year for several different reasons, "Elizabeth how many kids do we have? It's seven, right? Cause I have seven trunks?"
I froze like a deer in headlights, mentally counting in my head.
"Oh Merlin you don't know how many kids we have either." Severus dashed back out of the room and down the stairs.
"Eight! Eight kids!" I shouted down the stairs.
Remus, Minerva, Elijah, Damon, Seraphina, Hatsuharu, Davina, Marinette. Although technically, Remus was already graduated from Hogwarts.
"No!" Marinette shouted back up. "Nine! Five boys and four girls! I want another sister!"
Oh Merlin I had forgotten Carlisle.
"No!" Severus shouted, skirting around her. "No more children!"
I laughed slightly, before gathering up a few last minute belongings, hurrying down the stairs after the kids. Severus was putting the last of the trunks in the large car we had and then we headed on down to Central Station.
"We should've just flooed." Severus said stressfully as I calmly drove down the Muggle streets. His hands were clutching the arm rests and I jerked the brakes a little. He closed his eyes, breathing in heavily. "Elizabeth!"
I giggled and then let up on the driving, the rest of it being smooth until we pulled into the car park of Central. "See, it was fine."
"Okay kids out the car."
"Can I stay in the car?" Remus asked, bored. He had graduated from Hogwarts last year and would be working under Percy at the Ministry this fall. We were both extremely proud of him, although I hoped he wouldn't gain a pompous behavior. But he was much like his grandfather, so the chances were fairly low.
"You came, you help." Severus said, helping Marinette out of the car as she wouldn't let go of the cat he'd bought her for Christmas three years ago. "Help your sister out with her trolley."
Remus hopped out of the car and put Marinette's luggage on a trolley, before lifting her up so that she could sit on her luggage while he pushed her.
I was more worried about her than the other kids, even though it was her second year at the school whereas it was Davina and Carlisle's first year. But Marinette was different from the rest of my kids and it worried me.
"C'mon, Trang is waiting for us on the platform." Severus said, closing the car doors as the children started up to the school. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I shook my head. "Just worried about Mari, that's all."
"She'll be fine." Severus said, kissing the side of my head, leading me by my hand up to the station as well.
Trang, Oliver, and their children; Katie and Thomas, were waiting for us outside of platform 9 3/4.
"Hey." I hugged her tightly and she hugged me back enthusiastically. Katie seemed to be throwing a fit of sorts while Thomas went ahead through the barrier with Damon, the two of them chattering excitedly. Seraphina went next and Severus followed through with Carlisle and Davina.
"Katie doesn't want to go." Trang said heavily, her American accent clipped. Her and Oliver had been spending most of their summers in America while he traveled for Quidditch. Then she was Professor at Hogwarts during the winter. "She wanted to go to Illvermorny instead but I didn't want them going to different schools. But all of her witch friends are going there and. . . Merlin Elizabeth she set the house on fire last night. . ."
"Hey they do these things." I reassured her. "Remember when Seraphina set our garden on fire cause she wanted to make s'mores but it was the middle of June and Severus said we couldn't light the bonfire?"
Trang chuckled. "True."
"Once she gets to Hogwarts, she'll do alright. She'll make new friends for the winter and keep her old friends for the summer. She'll love it." I said, linking arms with Trang and following Remus and Marinette through to the other side of the platform.
"Okay I'm going to be late if I don't hurry." Trang said, looking around and hurrying off, calling after her son.
"Auntie Elizabeth!" A new voice cried out. I turned and smiled, bending down to scoop the young girl into my arms.
"Hi Irene, how are you doing?" I asked the young girl. Her parents, Ernie and Susan, quickly came up behind her followed by her brother Justin.
"Good!" She said excitedly.
"Hey Aunt Elizabeth." Justin said shyly.
"Hey Justin." I said, getting up and ruffling his hair.
"Elizabeth!" Severus called for me and I waved good-bye to them and headed over to my husband. "Found them." He gestured over to where Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny were standing with their own kids. Dad and Tonks were also nearby, saying good-bye to their two twin daughters- and my sisters- before they scrambled up onto the train. Oliver and Trang were also with them, their children also already on board.
I smiled, seeing Dad. Over the past years I had worked hard on a werewolf potion, before becoming rather successful. Dad had been my guinea pig throughout it all, although I had begged him to let me use another werewolf. But he had insisted and now, he was extremely healthy. The newest concoction had been working for the past year and a half, except for a nasty side effect of vomiting and having a heavy fever. But dad insisted it was better than becoming a werewolf every moon instead.
"Parked all right, then?" Ron asked Harry. "I did. Hermione didn't believe I could pass a Muggle driving test, did you? She thought I'd have to Confund the examiner."
"No, I didn't." Hermione said. "I had complete faith in you."
"As a matter of fact, I did Confund him." Ron whispered to Harry, Trang, and I as we loaded the luggage up. Severus was nearby as well, looking extremely concentrated as he put the trunks away. Trang and I giggled. "I only forgot to look in the wing mirror, and let's face it, I can use a Supersensory Charm for that."
Back on the platform, Lily and Hugo were discussing which House they would be sorted into when they finally went to Hogwarts.
"If you're not in Gryffindor, we'll disinherit you." Ron said. "But no pressure!"
"Ron!"
While Lily and Hugo laughed, Albus, Rose, Davina, and Carlisle looked rather solemn. Katie simply continued to pout angrily.
"He doesn't mean it." Hermione and Ginny said together.
"I don't care what house you're in." I said to Davina and Carlisle.
Ron, who had been distracted with pointing out Draco Malfoy- someone none of them had seen in nineteen years although I had seen him at glances throughout my years in the Ministry- he turned his attention back to me at those words, "You don't care?"
I rolled my eyes. "Why would I? I have three Gryffindors, two Hufflepuffs, a Ravenclaw, and a Slytherin. I am practically Hogwarts myself."
"Ooh so that's little Scorpius." Ron muttered under his breath, no longer paying attention again, "Make sure you beat him in every test, Rosie. Thank God you inherited your mother's brains."
"Ron, for heaven's sake, don't try to turn them against each other before they've even started school!" Hermione protested.
"You're right, sorry. Don't get too friendly with him, though, Rosie. Granddad Weasley would never forgive you if you married a pureblood."
"Talk to her Remus." Severus' voice intruded my ears as he whispered to dad.
"What do you want me to say?" Dad sounded incredibly amused.
"Tell her something, anything. She'll kill me if we have anymore kids. We just got the last two out of the house! And she wants another?"
Dad laughed. "You're only at nine Severus. You better hang on because when she was younger, she was talking about having twenty-one."
Severus groaned.
"Hey!" James shouted, reappearing, bursting with news. "Teddys' back there. Just seen him! And guess what he's doing? Snogging Victoire!"
Trang put a hand over her mouth so James couldn't see her laugh.
"Our Teddy! Teddy Lupin! Snogging our Victoire! Our cousin! Your brother! And I asked Teddy what he was doing-"
"You interrupted them? You are so like Ron." Ginny said, exasperated.
"-and he said he'd come to see her off! And then he told me to go away. He's snogging her!" James added again.
"Oh, it would be lovely if they got married!" Lily squealed. "Teddy would really be part of the family then!"
"I bet Bill will be really ecstatic." Trang mumbled to me and Oliver. We both laughed. Tonks was laughing silently, so hard that tears were streaming down her face while she clutched onto dad. Severus looked slightly amused.
Harry checked his watch and said, "It's nearly eleven, you'd better get on board."
The others bustled around to get their kids on the train and last minute hugs and kisses.
"Okay, so remember that you're coming home for Christmas." I said to the kids as they hugged and kissed Severus and I. "Elijah! Elijah Kingsley!" Elijah turned back to me. "You make sure they come home for Christmas you understand me?"
"Yes mum." Elijah Kingsley said, hugging me. "I won't leave 'em behind."
"Good." I said sternly, kissing his cheek. "Minerva!" She hugged me tightly. "Make sure you tell your Aunt Minerva we said hello."
"Of course mom." She said, before hopping on the train, her and Elijah Kingsley heading for the Head Boy and Girl carriages.
"Okay Mari, have a good day at school." I said softly, hugging my Slytherin daughter, squishing the cat just slightly between us.
She nodded, before hugging her father good-bye. "I love you two." I said to Davina and Carlisle. Soon all of the kids were on the train except for Albus. I smiled to myself, watching Harry talk to him down on his knees.
Lee and I had kept the band together and today as the train pulled out, we would release the last album we'd make. At least together. The one with the song 'Bravest Man I Ever Knew.' I could hear Harry tell Albus where his name originated from, just like it would say in the song. And the last album that told the story of our lives would be out.
Albus climbed onto the train and us parents watched. Trang was gone, probably to apparate to Hogsmeade so she could get to Hogwarts before he kids. Severus stood next to me, one hand in mine, the other in his pocket. Dad and Tonks stood to the side, waving at their girls: Isabelle and Clementine.
The children on the train craned to get a good look at us, pointing and whispering to each other. Severus huffed, turning his face away slightly.
"Why are they all staring?" Albus demanded.
"Don't let it worry you. It's me. I'm extremely famous." Ron said.
Albus, Rose, Hugo, Lily, Carlisle, and Damon laughed. The train began to move, Harry walking alongside it. Severus and I waved until the train had completely pulled away.
"Elizabeth." Dad said, pulling me into a hug. Severus went ahead and stepped to the side to wait for me.
"How are you feeling?" I asked, looking him over.
"The best I've been in years, thanks to you." He said softly. After the war, Kingsley had given him a job in the Auror department before he had retired eight years ago. "By the way, don't try to drive Severus to crazy."
I smirked. "I'll try."
I kissed Dads' cheek and headed back to Severus. Just as the two of us pushed back through the barrier to the real world, I paused, seeing Albus sitting on the train with Scorpius. It was so random and uncertain that I just stood there for a moment.
Severus turned back, looking at me with concern.
"Coming." I said, hurrying after him.
I knew he had seen me, my eyes glazed over. I knew he knew what that meant. And as we both headed to the car in silence, Remus tailing after us, I knew we were both thinking the same thing: I hadn't had a vision in nineteen years.
THE END
*Somebody save me*
summary: y/n is new to the outer banks, being as she’s Barry’s cousin from the city. Her being as familiar in the drug life as Barry, it was almost inevitable for her not to meet the Rafe himself. Little does she know her life was about to become an entire rollercoaster. Was rafe going to drag her down with his own issues and literal manic tendencies, or was she finally going to be the saving this lost boy needed?
CHAPTER ONE
“ this is why I don’t live near the water” You exclaimed as you swatted the swarming gnats and mosquitos away from your face .
“ either here or group home cuz” Barry exclaimed while taking nugs of marijuana out of a zip lock bag, placing them on his scale . “ better get use to it.”
You’d lived in a small home back in Atlanta Georgia with your mom, who was a serious addict and spent more time out on the streets prostituting for drugs than she was at home with her daughter . Because of your moms reckless behavior, you had missed out on a lot of school seeing as she became spending more time selling drugs for a living than actually participating in school. Unfortunately that raised the schools attention to your living situation, inevitably causing your mom to get locked up and You having to chose between moving to the outer banks, or a group home. You only had 2 months left until you would be 18 but until then, Barry’s trailer would be where you resided.
You rolled your eyes before getting up from your chair , walking towards the trailer.
“ where ya goin?” Barry asked turning from his table of weed.
“ I can’t handle these bugs dude” you exclaimed still walking towards the trailer.
“ we’ll if you’re gonna stay here you gon have to put your work in too” he stated before standing up, grabbing 2 bags of white powder. You stepped back in shock.
“ the fuck Barry” you exclaimed shaking your head in disbelief. “ you know I don’t fuck with that shit”. Barry shrugged before reaching back towards you, shaking them at you to grab.
“ no but these bills gotta be paid” he said nodding his head towards the trailer. “ I need you to take this over to someone for me tonight. He’s got a party goin and he’s gonna sell it throughout the night .”
“ why can’t you take it to him then?” You exclaimed crossing your arms.
“ because cuz you’re gonna have to pull your weight round here too” . You scoffed before snatching the 2 bags of coke from Barry’s hand.
“ I don’t even know who this guy is “ you huffed out, putting the two bags in your bra.
“ you’ll know him. His name is Rafe.”
****
As you pulled up to the driveway, yourjaw dropped at the size of the house Barry had you going to. It was massive, and the amount of people crowding the humongous house was massive as well.
“ how the fuck am I suppose to find this guy” you huffed out to yourself before stepping out the car. You had your long wavy hair down, and hooped earrings dangling. You wore on tight high waisted white jeans and a black strapless top as well. As you looked around you could definitely tell this wasn’t your crowd. The girls had massive amounts of make up caked on, booty shorts that their bottoms were practically hanging out of, and they all were definitely shit faced. And they all looked to be trying to get some guys attention.
You walked in looking around , running your hand through your hair stressfully, trying to figure out howyou were suppose to find this Rafe guy.
“ you don’t look like you’re from around here” you heard from behind you. You turned around to find a medium height guy- definitely shit faced might I add- looking you up and down. You scoffed before taking a step back.
“ ‘cause I’m not” you snapped, due to your lack of interest. “ I’m looking for Rafe”. The guy slightly scoffed with an eye roll before pointing to the section behind him.
“ pink shirt” he spat out before brushing past you. You snickered at the fact how some men just cannot handle rejection. Looking over where the guy had just previously directed you, you saw a group of kooks all sitting on the two couches surrounding a coffee table, the guy in the pink shirt , which was assumed to be Rafe, was separating lines of coke on the table. You sighed before making your way to him. You could only see his muscular back and broad shoulders from where you were standing since his back was faced towards you, but none the less he was a kook, which was definitely not your type.
“ Rafe?” You spoke out, only to see the dirty blondes headed boy to look over your shoulder. You swallowed quickly, taken back when you saw those piercing dilated blue eyes gazing into yours. He looked you up and down, presumably confused as to who you were, since you definitely didn’t look the part for a party of kooks. You quickly stood up straight, making sure you looked the tough hood girl as you are before you pulled the two bags of coke out of your back pocket. His eyebrows quickly furrowed together in confusion , wondering why a strange outsider like you was handing him the drugs.
“ Barry” was all you responded before walking off. Barry had told you that there didn’t need to be much conversation between the two of you, that Rafe would already know the deal. Which was fine by you. Rafe honestly took your breath away but looking at the bimbos he had surrounding him, it was clear you weren’t his type anyways. That didn’t matter though. He was beyond rich, and you were from the projects. Definitely no match.
“ hey” you heard someone shout from behind you. You turned around quickly, your long hair wrapping around your shoulders as you did. Oh god . It was Rafe.
“ sorry I didn’t catch your name” he said pointing behind him, indicating your brief in counter a few seconds ago. This time it was your turn to look at him with confusion. Why would he need your name?
“ y/n” you responded looking up at the tall geeked out boy with a slight smile.
“ I uh didn’t mean to be rude I just wasn’t expecting you - I mean the supply this early. “ fumbling with the two bags in his hand. You threw your hands up .
“ ion know that’s just what Barry told me to bring” . You watched Rafes face turn into worry.
“ uhm.. okay yeah alright” he said nervously running his hands through his hair before turning around and walking quickly back into the house. You shook your head in pure confusion before walking back to your car, headed back to the trailer .
****
“ alright ladies and gents , who wants a bump” Rafe said walking back into the common area, plopping down on the couch with the new baggies.
“ you know I do” the blonde girl next to him said scooting closer to him.
“ no more for you till you pay up sweetie” Rafe scoffed. She quickly placed her hand on his inner thigh giggling .
“ I can pay you alright” she spoke out giggling. Rafe laughed shaking his head.
“ already had it. You gotta pay your part this time” he said while using his ID card to separate the lines. She rolled her eyes with embarrassment while the crowd snickered at his comment before pulling her wallet out, handing him a couple of twenties before taking a rolled up dollar, snorting a line.
“ Rafe! My man!” Kelce shouted excitedly before dabbing Rafe up, looking down at the table . “ oh okay this is what I like to see baby” he said rubbing his hands together in excitement . Rafe handed him a rolled up dollar in exchange for some money from Kelce before Kelce leaned down, snorting him a line. “ where’s Topper?” He asked while sitting on the couch next to Rafe. Rafe froze for a second, flash backs to the night Topper got arrested for covering for Sarah and John B running through his head. Rafe hadn’t spoke to Topper since that day, it had became clear he knew the truth or he at least believed Sarah over Rafe.
“ he doesn’t want to come around “ Rafe said. Which was probably the truth. “ yanno Sarah” Rafe said not looking up from the table , watching others around taking more bumps. It was hard for Rafe trying to play things like he normally should. Of course he mourned the death of his sister, more than normal since he internally blamed himself. If he wouldn’t have killed the cop, and framed John B, she wouldn’t have been on the run. But at the same time he was just trying to protect their dad. Rafe froze for a second lost in thought before he picked up the pile of cash people were laying on the table. He knew aT this point the only thing he could do was continue making money for Berry. Barry was the only one who could really help the pogues bring the truth out about his crimes and at this point he had basically became Barry’s bitch. He handled all the product, and sold it all with little to no compensation.
“ alright whose ready for the next round ?”
****
The next morning
“ why you even selling to those kooks anyways Barry?” You asked as you hung your head off of Barry’s couch as he counted money from his duffle bag.
“ because y/n they’re rich and stupid” he responded as if it was an obvious answer. “ they ain’t got no responsibilities so all they care about is partying and getting fucked up.” You looked over at him as he stood up looking over you. “ and I’m the king at getting people fucked up aight. They’ll pay anything cause they got it” he said throwing his hands up. You sighed before sitting up.
“ you should really clean this place up. It stinks” you responded before walking out side, tugging at your tank top to cool down. As you walked out into his yard to sit out in one of his patio chairs you heard a dirt bike coming down the drive way.
“ great” you mumbled as you plopped down in the chair, hissing as the plastic chair burned the back of your thighs since you were in short denim shorts. You quickly lit up a joint Barry rolled for you earlier as you watched the guy turn his bike off before taking his helmet off.
‘Shit’ you thought as you accidentally inhaled too much and began coughing , realizing it was Rafe on the bike. You honestly had thought about him quite a few times through the night last night. Just mesmerized by his attractive looks.
“ hey I remember you” he spoke as you took a sip of your water.
“ oh yeah?” You asked brushing your long locks of hair from your face as some stuck to your forehead from sweat. “ where from?” You questioned, playing it off like you hadn’t thought about him all night.
“ you came to my party last night” he said. Wow. He was really cute.
“ oh yeah! Rafe right?” Rafe smiled.
Okay what the fuck. You immediately felt butterflies fluttering in the pit of your stomach as you watched this literal perfect smile form across his face . He ran his hands through his hair ( almost as if he was getting nervous) before nodding. “ yeah yeah that’s me” . You grinned before reaching out offering him a hit off your joint.
“ want a hit?” You asked.
“ yeah sure” he said before sitting down next to you, taking a hit off your joint. “ so I’ve never seen you round here. You uh Barry’s new girl ?” He asked blowing smoke out between the sentences. You threw your head back laughing loudly .
“ fuck no!” You laughed out. “ he’s my cousin . I’m just stayin with him for a couple months till I get my own plsce” you stated while grabbing the joint back from Rafe.
“ ahh” he responded looking down at the fire pit in front of y’all. “ you gonna stay here or” he asked. If it wasn’t for you crushing you would’ve been weird out by the questions he was asking. You shrugged taking a big hit .
“ I don’t know yet” you said blowing smoke out of your nose. “ I’m waiting to see if this place is gonna win me over.” You responded honestly . “ but honestly this heat and these bugs are for the birds” you said swatting at some of the gnats that were swarming again. Rafe chuckled slightly, looking down at his hands.
“ it’s not too bad once you get use to it.” He said looking over at you. “ maybe someone will change your mind” .You grinned, looking down as you felt the heat rushing to your cheeks. You could see Rafe playing with his hair again. You had come to a conclusion that the hair playing meant he was definitely nervous which made the butterflies flutter again.
“ uhm well-“ he said awkwardly standing up. “ Barry inside?” He asked looking over towards the trailer.
“ yeah yeah he’s in there” you said standing up as well.
“ okay well I’ll see you again okay Y/n? “ he stated, watching as you nodded in agreement. You watched him head inside the trailer, is tall figure swaying as he walked.
***
“ aye yo Barry” Rafe spoke out before opening the screen door to Barry’s trailer. “ got your money” Rafe stated nervously walking toward the back of the trailer to Rafes room.
“ okay country club I see you “ Barry expressed walking out his room to meet Rafe in the kitchen. “ this all of it?” He stated while grabbing the stack out of his hand.
“ yeah man that’s all of it” Rafe stated , sweat dripping down his forehead as he brushed his hair back. “ uhm you uh know you uhm doubled it right?” Rafe said referring to the supply.
“ I needed to get the product movin” he Barry replied still counting the stash.
“ yeah but you see it’s hard to move that much-“
“ listen country club I own you ok” Barry said looking up at Rafe with that cocky smirk of his. “ I know your secret. I know what you really did. Now you can either make my money by doin this work when and where I say I want it done-” he stared shrugging his shoulders. “- or I could just turn you in and make the money that way” Barry chuckled at the sight of Rafe breaking a sweat at the thought of the truth coming out as he sat down at his kitchen table, setting the stack of money on the table. “ choice is yours my friend” . Rafe shook his head stumbling around a bit , partially from nerves and the other from geeking of the dope.
“ nah I-I got you” he responded back , his heart pounding with anxiety.
“ alright that’s what I like to hear” Barry beamed. “ no go. I’ll let you know when I got more for you” he stated. Rafe quickly made his way out the door, running his hands through his hair once again before walking towards your direction. He wanted to just hop on his bike and scurry away from it all , but something about you intrigued him so much. Maybe it was because you treated him differently than everyone else. You were kind to him, and didn’t look at him like he was some crazy addict .
“ see ya Rafe” you called out as he passed by you towards his bike. He tossed his hand up to you with a smile before sitting on his bike, grabbing his helmet, he froze for a second before looking up at you.
“ hey I’m gonna have another party tomorrow night, you know if you’re not busy maybe you could come chill . Get a feel of this place a little more” he suggested, his fingers twiddling with his helmet.
“ I don’t know Rafe, didn’t really look like my crowd “ you stated, this time it was your turn to run your hands through your hair. He shrugged looking down at his helmet.
“ then hang with me” he suggested, his voice a bit softer as if he was nervous to make the suggestion at all. You grinned, pushing your hair behind your ear.
“ okay yeah, I’ll see you then “ you nodded, looking up to see his blue eyes beam with excitement.
“ cool cool” he stated before placing his helmet back on before revving his bike on , riding back out the driveway.
You leaned back sighing of happiness, grinning at Rafes comment .
“ then hang with me”
Tomorrow night couldn’t come sooner.
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Ah thanks to those who are reading this story! Love you all ☻
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Y/N Pov:
After getting dropped off by Atsumu, I check my phone to only see 20 miss calls from Semi.
Yikes, he probably thought I died or something...
I decide to call him back.
" Hello. "
" Y/N WHAT HAPPEN TO YOU! I WAS TRYING TO FIND YOU ALL OVER THE PARTY! " he shouted through the phone.
" OK FIRST OF ALL CALM DOWN! I'M OK DON'T WORRY! "
" Thank GOSH! I REALIZED YOU WERE GONE AROUND 3 am?! "
" Wow what a nice friend realizing I was gone after 5 hours at the party! " I say with sarcasm.
" HEY! AT LEAST I REMEMBER?! "
" YEA! You right... " I laughed.
" OH ALSO?! How did you get home your car is still at the Venue?! " Semi asks confused.
" WELL! A guy name Atsumu helped me out when I was completely out! "
" ATSUMU?! THE VOLLEYBALL PLAYER?! LIKE THE REALLY GOOD ONE?! "
" Yea?! The one with the twin! "
Why is he so surprised?
" DO YOU GUYS KNOW EACH OTHER?! "
" No, we just met last night! How do you know him ?" I asked curiously.
" We used to play volleyball together in high school same with his brother Osamu! Also, Osamu catered for the party! "
" Hmm, interesting... Well, I met Osamu at his restaurant."
" Osamu is the calmer twin but he still pretty crazy, on the other hand, Atsumu is a big flirt with the girls watch out!" Semi laughs on the phone.
" Yea not interested. "
" Haha, that's a loss for him! Anyways you need a break from volleyball players. " Semi laughs.
" Yea I do! Alright SEMI SEMI I'm gonna get going now I have to finish a couple of things from work. Also, I need to cure this hangover before tomorrow. "
" Ok then ILL LET YOU GO! BYE! "
" Bye Semi! "
We both end the call.
Now I need to find a way to get my car before noon because I have tons of work to do.
I can't ask Semi to take me there because he staying at a friend's house, I can probably ask Kenma to help me. I haven't seen him in a while so maybe we can catch up a little also.
I shoot a text to Kenma.
Texting on phone:
Y/n: “ Hey are you free right now? “
5 minutes later
Kenma: " yea why? "
Y/n: " Do you think you can come over right now?!
Kenma: " I don't see why not. "
Y/n: " PERFECT! "
I put my phone down on the counter and change into different clothes because I was still in Atsumu shirt.
I guess I'll be keeping the shirt until we meet again, or if we ever.
30 minutes later
I hear my doorbell ring, and it was Kenma.
" KENMAAA COME IN! " I say happily."
" Hey what's up its been a while! " he says as he went in for a hug.
" Nothing really.. "
" Bs I heard you and Kageyma broke up.. "
" FROM WHO?! " I say confused.
" Hinata... "
" OH YEAAA HIS BESTFRIEND... "
" Yea, he didn't really tell him but Hinata suspected when he texts him " how are things going with y/n, " and let's say he didn't take it well. " Kenma said in a conflicted tone.
" WHY did he not take it WELL! He the one who broke up with me?!" I say angrily.
" Did he ever tell you why he broke up with you? " Kenma asked.
" No, he just said I dOn'T LOvE yOu aNyMoRE "
I’m so annoyed right now why is he acting like the victim.
" That's it? " Kenma was surprised.
" YEA! "
" Oh wow, I really didn't think that the reason like... Strange."
" Who cares, I don't like him either. "
Obviously, I was still hurting but it's fine I don't need him.. Screw him.
" If you say so! "
Kenma Pov:
Yea no she still likes him...
Y/N Pov:
" Enough about him... DO you want to help me get my car?! "
" Wheres your car? " Kenma asks confused
" UH well, It's at a Venue.. "
" Did you go to a party or something? "
" Yea Semi had a party yesterday and let's say I got a little too wasted... BUT don't worry someone helped me out... "
" Uh, who helped you out? "
" I don't know if you know him but he is also a Volleyball player, his name is Atsumu the last name is Miya? "
" Wait a minute the one with the twin? "
" YEA HIM!"
" Are guys friends?! " Kenma asks
" No, I literally just met him last night. "
" Atsumu is a nice guy he just a big flirt. "
" THAT'S WHAT SEMI SAID?! "
" Well, it's because he is always out with a new girl every week. "
" Yea no thanks... " I say weirded out.
" Ok, so are we going to get your car?! " Kenma asks in a bored tone.
" Ok, let us go! "
I got into Kenma's car, luckily the venue is only 20 minutes away.
" AHH MY Precious car!! " I shouted.
" SHEEZ be louder next time will ya. "
" Kenma stop being grumpy... " I say as I try to keep in my laugh.
" Yea whatever go get your car now! "
" Already kicking me out... "
" Yes! "
" AH YOUR SO COLD! " I laugh
" Ok well thank you Kenma! We actually need to hang out ok?! "
" Fine... We will one of these days. " he smiles.
I get out of the car, wave to Kenma then I get in my car.
Finally, I can go home now and start working on projects.
After the 20 minute drive, I get in my house and start working on the three projects.
Meanwhile At this time:
Atsumu pov:
I'm sitting on the couch, my phone started buzzing uncontrollably.
What the heck.
I flip my phone over only to see texts from my friends. I open up the group chat and see something unexpected. A PHOTO OF ME AND Y/N IN THE CAR ON “ THE PEOPLES “ TWITTER PAGE.
The big 4 :
Sakusa: Oh so is she another new girl?
Bokuto: Already Atsumu?!
Hinata: Isn't that Kageyama's ex!
Me: NO NO THEY GOT IT WRONG WE ARE NOT GOING OUT!
Me: ALSO HINATA DID YOU JUST SAY?! KAGEYAMA EX?!
Me: CAN YOU GUYS STOP THAT?! YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG...
Sakusa: Ok then if she, not a random hook up who is she, and does she know she on " the people's " Twitter account label as mystery girl?!
Bokuto: YEA DOES SHE KNOW!?
Oh my, we just met and she isn't going to like this.
Me: NO SHE DOESNT KNOW...But she was some random girl at the party Osamu was catering. I decided to help her out because she was alone and drunk so I took her to Osamu's house, so she can sober up. The next morning I took her home because she left her car at the Venue... I DIDNT THINK THE Paparazzi WOULD CARE SO MUCH?!
Hinata: Wow Atsumu that was nice of you.
Bokuto: ^^^
Sakusa: Well you're going to have to tell her or do something about it because we all know how crazy your fangirls get.
Me: Fine fine let me tell her right now.
After texting the group chat, I was about to text y/n only to remember... I don't have her number, but I think Osamu has her number.
I texted Osamu, now I have to wait for him to respond.
Now back to y/n :
Finally, I'm almost done with this projects...
Then all of sudden I get a text from Tendou.
I looked at my phone and I can't believe what I see... He sends me a screenshot of Me and Atsumu in the car... It was trending on Twitter. The title was " Star setter mystery girl? "
Texting On phone:
Tendou: I didn't know you guys were going out?
Y/n: OH MY GOSH? Please tell me this is a joke?!
Tendou: No I don't think so...
Y/n: WE ARE NOT GOING OUT... I MET HIM LAST NIGHT!
I explained to Tendou what happened last night.
Tendou: this Has to be the most miss interpreted picture ever. LMAO!!
Y/n: YEA IT IS NOW EVERYONE AT WORK IS GOING TO ASK ME... OH NO KAGEYAMA PROBABLY SAW THIS!
Tendou: HAHAHA.. WHO CARES HE BROKE UP WITH YOU... His loss..
Y/n: YOUR RIGHT! BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE KNOW AS ATSUMU ANOTHER GIRL?! I DON'T EVEN KNOW THE GUY!
Tendou: Has he talked to you about it?!
Y/n: No HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE MY NUMBER?!
Tendou: Well this is going to be fun to watch...
Y/n: NO it's NOT..
I stressfully put my phone down on the counter...
What I'm I going to do?! HOW DID I GET INTO TO THIS MESS?
I hear another notification go off on my phone... It was an unknown number.
Text message:
Hey can we talk?
Y/n: Who is this?
Atsumu: Its Atsumu
Y/n: NO WE CANT TALK DID YOU SEE TWITTER?
Atsumu: YES I KNOW THAT'S WHY I WANT TO TALK?
Y/n: Also? HOW DID YOU GET MY NUMBER?
Atsumu: OSAMU GAVE IT TO ME!
oh, yea I forgot I gave him my number.
Atsumu: WELL HEAR ME OUT! This will die down tomorrow, me and the team are leaving for Osaka in the morning so you don't even have to see me again.
Y/n: Sheez that's a harsh way to put it.
Atsumu: I mean if you want to see me you can~
Oh my, I can hear his flirtatious tone from here.
Y/n: NO!
Atsumu: AW you're SO MEAN!
Atsumu: ALSO I DIDNT KNOW Kageyama was your boyfriend...
Y/n: Who told you that?
Atsumu: Hinata! We play on the same team..
Y/n: OH Gosh NOW IT SEEMS LIKE IM JUMPING AROUND Guy to Guy...
Atsumu: YOU THINK IT MAKES YOU SEEM BAD? IT MAKES ME SEEM BAD TOO!
Y/n: Atsumu Shut up! Everyone knows you're a big flirt.. now I'm going to seem like I'm one of your little playthings.
Y/n: WHAT IM GOING TO SAY at WORK PEOPLE ARE GOING TO ASK IF WE HOOKED UP?!
Atsumu: I have an Idea.. What if we pretend we're dating?
Y/n: HUH?
Atsumu: It will fix both our reputation.. I won't be seen as the guy who hooks up with every chick and people at work can stop questioning you. There's a BONUS we can make Kageyama jealous... You can win him back.
Y/n: IF we do this... together in private we don't have to act as a couple right.. I just MET YOU...
Atsumu: Yea don't worry your not even my type, this should be easy because I won't be near you.
Y/n: DEAL!
Atsumu: PERFECT! Just let me know if anything happens tomorrow! Ill fill you in too!
Y/n: Fine.
I place my phone down on the nearby table.
WHAT HAVE I DONE? IS THIS REALLY GOING TO WORK?
Atsumu pov:
Why couldn't have it been with much cuter girl? Now no girl is going to talk to me.. Stupid paparazzi.
- Beginning of the End -
It was a Thursday the day everyone disappeared.
The world was quiet outside, but it was loud in your phone, on account of the international quarantine. Everyone was tweeting, making dumb videos, playing video games. You would sit in your room for hours on end, scrolling through your phone as you mourned the loss of your senior year of high school. No prom, no graduation, no more arts and crafts club. It was bad enough that your closest friend group had been disbanded before your senior year even started-- it was just bad luck, but they all left to live in different states while you were left alone in suburbia.
You stayed home with your mom while your dad went to work-- he was considered an essential worker, as he worked in the grocery store. Your mom was much more active than you, constantly cleaning or cooking or going for a walk. It was admirable, but it irritated you how she would always try and get you to interact with her activities. She did it because she was probably worried about you, and she was probably lonely. You were lonely, too-- your friends lived miles away in the vast expanse of the suburbs, and your home was tucked into the fringes of soccer mom society. Your backyard was larger than most, and it was perfect for when you would host kickbacks with your friends. Recently, however, you had no reason to use the large space.
On Thursday, you decided to put down your phone for a while and play fetch with your dog. She was the biggest and fluffiest best friend you’d ever had, a german shepherd named Indie, short for Indiana, as in the archaeologist. You thought the name was fitting, because she could find almost anything with her nose-- you and your mom had trained her to do that a few summers ago.
Your mom had gone on a walk before you decided to play fetch with the dog. You had left your phone on the kitchen table. It wasn’t until the sun began to set and you felt your arm begin to ache when you noticed that she’d been gone for a while.
You gave Indie her stick, though she sniffed and whined at you stressfully. You frowned, and let her inside as you checked your phone. A few notifications from your friends’ group chat:
4:47pm
Kimi: Anybody else’s power go out?
Callie: omg i thought it was just Ohio!
Kimi: Nah, we got it in Connecticut, too.
Emily: New York, too!
They were asking if you had experienced the same thing.
6:48pm
Me: i didnt notice, i was playing with indie. wbu, sami?
Sami had moved to L.A., about two hours from your home, so you guys were able to hang out most weekends if you took the train or if she drove out to you. She didn’t even read the chat.
6:48pm
Me: bitch i know ur in quarantine smh read my message
[Kimi, Callie, and Emily liked your message!]
You dialed your mom’s number as you went to turn on the T.V., only to be met with static. You frowned, and surfed a few channels only to be met with more static before you turned it off. Her voicemail blared through your phone speakers, and that was when you started to worry.
You hung up, called your dad.
“Hey, honey!” He answered-- he must’ve been on break.
“Dad, did the power go out?”
“Yeah, for a couple minutes there. Did it happen at home, too?”
“Yeah…” You trailed off. Indie licked your hand, and whined some more. “Hey, mom’s not answering her phone and she’s been on a walk for a while. Like, three hours.”
“Huh.” Your dad let out a contemplative sigh. “Well, I’m sure she’ll be okay. Maybe she’s talking with the neighbors and her phone died.”
“Maybe.”
But maybe not. You had a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach, and Indie could sense it as you sat on the couch. She slowly tried to inch her way into your lap, as she never really had a good idea of her own large size. You just let her and scratched her ear.
“Listen, honey, I gotta go. But we can make mac-n-cheese for dinner, how’s that sound?”
“Good, dad.” You said, biting your lip. “Okay, see you when you get home.”
Then, you hung up, and you waited for your mom.
[-]
When your dad got home, you went out to search for your mom. On your tour of the neighborhood, you came across others who had broken quarantine and were searching for their loved ones, too. Saying they went for a walk, or to the store and they didn’t come back.
Your dad remained the voice of reason, saying things like well maybe their phone died, or this is all just some big prank we’ll all laugh about later. You stayed silent.
[-]
Saturday was when your dad didn’t come home. His car was nowhere to be found, but you didn’t trust yourself to drive your mom’s car just yet. Or rather, you didn’t want to drive it because you didn’t want to be reminded that it was permanently vacant. You walked all the way to the store an hour after he was supposed to have gotten off. Manager Dan wasn’t there, either-- nobody had seen your dad at all that day; he was a no-call, no-show.
You walked all the way back home.
9:52pm
Me: my dad’s gone now too
10:05pm
Callie: fuck.
Callie: my sister…
10:06pm
Kimi: I still haven’t heard from Sami.
Emily: Yeah, me neither.
10:15pm
Me: we should check in every day with each other
[Callie and Emily liked your message!]
10:32
Me: Kimi?
[-]
It’s Thursday again.
Emily has stopped answering by now, and the frantic search parties that used to pass by your window every now and again have stopped, too. Even Twitter is quiet-- it seems with every passing day, more and more people go silent. As you lay on your bed with Indie at your feet, you keep refreshing your feed on every social media app, but nothing changes-- all of the posts are old. It feels like your world is shrinking while at the same time expanding into a terrifying void.
5:38pm
Me: callie?
Callie: im here.
You breathe a sigh of relief, which turns into a sob into your pillow.
5:39pm
Me: idk how long we’ll have wifi or even electricity.
Callie: my parents are still here. Come to ohio, seriously.
You bite your lip. You think about Sami, and how many times she pried the truth out of you when you were sad, how she was the only one who would sing with you at karaoke, how you promised to move to New York together.
5:39pm
Me: i have to find sami.
Callie: please just come here. We need to stick together.
Me: i’ll find sami and we’ll come to ohio. Then we go to NY to look for em and kimi.
5:45pm
Callie: okay. Please text.
Me: i will. I promise i’ll come to ohio.
You bite your lip, and glance at your phone’s percentage: 43%. You sigh, and put it on the charger while you go downstairs to scrounge for breakfast. You only woke up about two hours ago, though you can’t sleep much, anyways. You think to yourself how your mom would be scolding you for waking up so late.
As you eat the last poptart, Indie lays down on your feet. You toss her a couple crumbs, she eats them gratefully. You sigh, and look at your now empty pantry-- you have to try and go to the grocery store, whether you like it or not. You only have your permit, but you know that you’re a terrible driver. Still, you get up and put on shoes and grab your jacket. You probably don’t have to worry about cops or the law anymore, anyway-- you suspect everything has disappeared.
You look at yourself in the mirror; you didn’t think your outfit for the apocalypse would be sweatpants and a hoodie. With a sigh, you change into jeans and a long sleeve, layer a flannel on top of that, and your favorite jacket on top of that. It’s cold outside-- much colder than you’re used to.
Based on the incredible silence on Facebook, you figure that most of the adults have disappeared. As you drive further and further into town, you notice some obvious signs of looting from once pristine houses: trash littering lawns, doors left wide open. You get the haunting realization that you’re perhaps the only person left in your neighborhood. It’s amazing how quickly things can turn in just a few days.
When you pull up to the grocery store, you notice there’s only one other car there-- a white van, stationed by the curb and still running. You actually pull into a parking spot like some kind of society bootlicker, and cautiously put the car in park and turn off the engine.
You watch the van for a moment, slowly becoming hyper-aware of the very real possibility that you might run into robbers. Your stomach growls, and you take a deep breath. You should’ve brought Indie.
Grocery bags in hand, you exit your soccer mom minivan and lock it. Steeling your nerves, you put one foot in front of the other. As if on cue, two figures hurry out of the store, glancing behind them before they notice you. The automatic doors have long since stopped running, so they just pause in the doorway while you freeze on the curb, the fumes from the van tickling your nose.
They’re both boys holding bags you assume to be filled with groceries: both around your age, one of them has gray and black spiked hair, and eyes as wide and aware as an owl’s. The one next to him has dark, short, almost curly hair, and his gaze is calculating and cold.
You take a small step back, unsure of what to say. They seem just as apprehensive, when the van door slides open forcefully.
“Hey, what are you doing? Get in!” Another boy, this one of a larger build than the two in front of you with jet black spiked hair, snaps angrily.
“Kuroo, we have a situation.” The curly-haired boy says evenly, though he’s tense. His knuckles are white holding his bags.
“Huh?” The one who must be Kuroo says, and cranes his neck to the side to spot you. “Oh, shit.”
“U-um…” You stutter out, and you suddenly feel extremely cornered-- it’s three against one, and what if they want to take your car? What if they have some kind of weird cult and need a girl for breeding? “I’m just gonna get some-- some poptarts and leave.”
“Holy shit!!” The gray haired one seems to have broken out of his stupor, and he rushes over to you, dropping his bags and their contents on the ground in order to grab your shoulders. “Another person! A-a girl!”
“Yes, she’s a girl…” The curly-haired one sighs, puts his bags in the van and begins to gather up the other one’s forgotten groceries.
“First one I’ve seen in a while.” Kuroo grins and hops from the car to stand beside the gray-haired one who still hasn’t let go of you. You don’t have the balls to tell him to get off-- you’re not sure how dangerous these boys are. “How long have you been hiding out?”
“Come with us! We’re at the high school.” The gray-haired one beams-- how could he possibly be smiling?
You don’t know what to say, so you look away. Your voice seems to be caught in your throat, and that’s extremely frustrating-- but you’re not about to cry in front of these guys.
“Quit it, Bokuto.” The curly-haired one is eyeing you carefully, though not as if you’re a threat. He seems to be the only one that can actually sense your discomfort. The one that’s holding you-- Bokuto-- sighs, and lets you go, instead putting his hands on his hips.
“We should at least help her.” He points out, and grins down at you. “What’s your name, anyway?”
“She’s not gonna tell you. Let’s just go home.” Kuroo shrugs, and you cross your arms.
You tell them your name, if only to spite the taller one. He turns with a grin, and it only just occurs to you that perhaps, that was reverse-psychology. You huff, and look away with a little bit of a blush.
“Like I said, I just need to get poptarts and some other things and then I’m going back home.” You mutter.
“We’re wasting gas.” The curly-haired one calls, as he has already sat in the front seat.
“Hold on, Akaashi!” Bokuto calls. “Listen, there aren’t anymore poptarts in there. None whatsoever.”
Your heart breaks a little, but you keep it together.
“There’s, like, rice and stuff, but I think that’s it.” He shrugs, and turns to get into the van. You bite your lip-- might as well ask rather than waste your time wandering around all alone.
“Is there any dog food left?”
“Huh? Dog food?” Bokuto is right back in front of you. He and Kuroo speak at the same time:
“You’re gonna eat dog food?” Bokuto says. “You have a dog?” Kuroo says, and the two boys glare at each other.
“Yeah…” You say, though you still haven’t gotten an answer to your question. “I mean, I have a dog.”
“Yeah, it’s in aisle five.” You hear the one called Akaashi tell you, without even bothering to turn to look at you.
“I know that.” You snap-- your dad used to work in this store, you know it pretty damn well. Akaashi glances back at you then, probably a little surprised by your defensive tone. You huff, annoyed at yourself for being so touchy. These were the first people you met after about three straight weeks in quarantine, and they might be the only people left for miles. You need to play nice.
“My dad works here.” You explain, looking down at your shoes. Kuroo nods, exchanges a glance with Bokuto. “Well, he used to.”
A silence falls over the group-- they know. You all know, now, what it’s like to lose a parent, or any loved one, for that matter. You blink quickly to fight back any tears that might threaten to escape.
“We’re staying at Karasuno High-- it’s the high school near Flat Top.” Kuroo says. “If you want to join us, we’re kind of setting up camp there.”
“There’s more of us!” Bokuto explains. “We’re gonna find some mattresses after this to bring ‘em back so we can all stick together.”
“Oh, cool.” You say half-heartedly, unsure of why exactly they’re inviting you over as if it’s some kind of fun sleepover. “Wait, you guys went to Karasuno?”
“Yeah! You, too?” Bokuto lights up, and you look at the three boys a little closer, though you don’t seem to recognize them.
“Yeah… but I don’t think we were in the same circles.” You finally smile a little, albeit sadly, now that you’re remembering all the things you’ll never be able to return to now that school and society are essentially gone.
“You ever go to any volleyball games?” Kuroo asks, obviously encouraged by your smile. You shake your head.
Akaashi has exited the van by now with a sigh, coming to stand beside his two friends as he takes a look around. “We need to get going. If you want to join us, you know where to find us. But it’s gonna be dark soon.”
That seems to smack some sense into the other two, and they exchange glances with one another. Kuroo nods, Bokuto sighs, and the two get back into the van. Akaashi pauses, and you accidentally lock eyes with him.
His gaze betrays nothing, and you wonder for a moment how he ever became friends with these two. He reaches into the van, and pulls out a familiar blue cardboard box, gives it to you.
You take the poptarts, and glance up at him questioningly-- he puts a finger to his lips with just the hint of a smile. You smile back.
“Listen, it’s great you have a dog-- keep him close. And get home before it gets dark. And…” He glances to the side uneasily. “Get a baseball bat or something.”
A chill goes up your spine at that last part, and you frown, but nod to the boy in front of you anyways. He returns the nod, and gets in the back of the van. You both share a glance at each other one more time, and it feels as if he wants to say something more, but he doesn’t. He just slides the door closed, and Bokuto waves to you out the window.
“Byee! Hopefully we’ll see you later-- hey, where’d you get those poptarts?!” Bokuto’s voice fades away as the van drives off, and you are once again left alone.
[-]
You gather a fair amount of stuff-- rope, for some reason is included in your loot. You always saw people in the movies get rope, so you figure you’ll find some use for it.
There aren’t any baseball bats, but you do find a hammer and a paring knife. It’s small, but better than nothing. You load up on the dog food, and even manage to haul two huge bags of kibble into your car. As you load it up, you can’t shake the feeling of someone watching you. Even though you look around and make certain that you’re the only person present, the feeling doesn’t go away. You sort of wish you’d gone with those boys now.
You aren’t surprised when the street lights don’t turn on, but you take that as your signal to leave. Even though you want to scrounge for more supplies, you don’t want to risk it. Akaashi’s words of warning hang over your head like a humid fog.
As you drive home, you can’t stop chewing on your lip. Even with your headlights on, it’s hard to see, but you don’t want to turn on your brights and draw more attention to yourself. Just get home, lock the doors, and check in with Callie.
You park the car in your backyard because the garage door won’t open-- the power’s finally gone out. You close the backyard gate and lock it as soon as you’re out of the car, but somehow you still feel uneasy.
As you enter your dark home, you softly call out Indie’s name, and you hear her scamper up to you.
“Good girl,” You whisper, and scratch her ear. You decide to leave the larger groceries in the car for now, as you don’t want to go back outside and keep making trips of transferring the supplies into your house. For now, you need to sleep so that you can ignore the hunger in your belly and stretch out your rations just a little further.
Indie guides you up the stairs and into your bedroom as you set your bag down heavily. You come across your phone with dismay, finding that it hasn’t charged at all since you left, and is now at 7%. You bite your lip, and open up the almost abandoned group chat.
9:57pm
Me: callie im gonna come to ohio soon. I think we are gonna lose connection tho. Idk if this will even send, but ill see u in ohio. I love you.
The message doesn’t send. You shudder out a sigh, and you’re grateful when Indie nuzzles into your side.
Your phone finally shuts off, though it’s useless now, anyway. You crawl into your bed and Indie curls up next to you, and you fall into an uneasy sleep.
[-]
“Shh!”
You jolt awake at the hissing sound that’s coming from downstairs. Indie is tense and alert, and she licks your elbow. You sit up, and vaguely note the time: 3:37am.
There’s some shuffling, and you see the beam of what you assume to be a flashlight shakily illuminate the walls downstairs. You didn’t close your bedroom door when you came in, because you assumed that you were alone.
‘Stupid…’ You think to yourself as you grip Indie’s collar. She begins to growl, but you shush her quickly, though she flattens her ears back at you. Letting out a shaky breath, you crawl off of your bed as silently as you can manage, and reach for the hammer and paring knife in your bag.
Indie follows you as you venture into the hallway, and you perch behind the bars of your stairs as the hushed conversation down below becomes clearer.
“Just find whatever food you can and let’s go.” A deep male voice cuts through the silence.
“We need to check the car! There’s nothing here.” A stranger male voice answers, and giggles. “We should find the girl instead.”
You tense, and grip the hammer a little tighter.
“I don’t care about her. I just want her stuff.” The deep voice asserts, and you wonder what you should do next. Storm downstairs and hammer them to death? You’ve never fought anybody before, let alone killed someone. Your hands are becoming clammy, and you don’t notice the pregnant pause in the conversation downstairs.
It isn’t until you see a head of brown hair come into view that you’re snapped from your thoughts. Indie can’t help herself-- she barks, and bolts down the stairs before you can stop her. The two boys yell in surprise, and you watch as she tackles the tall one with brown hair. Meanwhile, the other one comes into view-- he has large, droopy eyes with spiked red hair, and he looks excited when he catches sight of you.
“There she is!” He coos, and begins to walk upstairs. You gasp, and you know in this split second that your home is no longer yours-- you need to get away. In one fluid motion, you run into your room to grab your single bag of groceries. It’s heavy, but you don’t notice as adrenaline rushes through your veins.
When you turn to run down the stairs, the red-head catches you by both of your upper arms. He licks his chapped lips, and your knee jerks out to hit his groin. He yelps and doubles over, and you fly down the stairs.
“Indie!” You whistle, and she actually bounds from the living room over the couch, to skid by your side. You swipe the car keys off the counter, rip the sliding glass door open, and use the fob to unlock the car. You open the passenger for Indie, she leaps in as you toss the bag and your hammer and knife in behind her, you slam the door closed, and hop over the hood of the car.
As you turn to open the driver’s side door, you watch as the red-head runs in slow motion from your stairs to the exit to your backyard. You don’t breathe or shake as you turn the ignition, throw the car in reverse, then drive, and plow through your flimsy backyard gate as you push your little soccer van to its limits.
Tires skid as you swerve onto the street, and you press down so hard on the gas, that a few minutes later, you don’t register that you’re going 90 miles an hour in the suburbs. Houses pass you at incredible speed, and you ease up on the pedal when Indie licks your cheek. You stare straight ahead, and subconsciously, you drive towards your high school. Those three boys were nice to you-- they warned you, and you didn’t listen. They even tried to help you and include you, and you flat out denied them.
You slam on the brakes as you turn into Karasuno High’s parking lot. It’s only now that you realize that you didn’t fasten your seat belt, and you shut off the car with a shaky breath. The front of the school looms over you, and you wonder for a moment if they’re even here-- was it all a joke? What if they turn you away because you were such a bitch earlier? No matter how many scenarios you run through your head, you come to the same conclusion every time: you can’t go back home, and you’re already here, so you may as well investigate. You grab your hammer and get out of the car, and Indie follows behind. You close and lock the doors, pocketing the keys, and turn towards the school you’ve known for three and a half years.
The front gates are locked, of course. You wander the perimeter of the school, Indie trotting beside you the whole way. The school looks different in the dark-- it feels different, too. It’s like you’re walking in a dream, or some sort of in-between space. You shouldn’t be awake, and you definitely shouldn’t be here, but you are. It’s strange. Everything is bathed in moonlight, so it’s all a very specific shade of blue that makes you feel like you’re underwater.
You come upon the gym in the back of the school, and you’re startled to hear voices coming from inside. You tip-toe up to the doors, and Indie sniffs curiously.
“If your leg gets cut off, would it hurt?”
“Please just go to sleep.”
“Duh!” A third voice chimes in, and the second voice groans.
“How, though?” The first voice presses.
“‘Cause your leg got cut off, dumbass.” Third voice answers.
“Where’re you gonna feel the pain?”
“In your leg…” The third voice trails off.
“Exactly, man. How’re you gonna feel the pain in your leg if--”
“--if your leg is gone?!” The first and third voice finish together, and you hear the second person groan.
“I’m going outside.” He says, and as his voice gets louder, you stumble away from the door just as it opens.
You blink rapidly and your jaw drops-- Akaashi stands in front of you, brows furrowed and eyes wide. You can’t believe they’re actually here.
“Akaashi?” Someone calls from inside. Akaashi opens his mouth to respond, but glances at Indie when she sniffs his hand curiously. He pets her absent-mindedly as his gaze wanders back to yours.
Bokuto and Kuroo pop up behind him a second later, and they’re just as surprised as Akaashi. Indie sniffs them in turn, and her tail begins to wag.
You drop your hammer with a thud, and sniffle like a toddler before letting out a sob you didn’t know you’d been holding.
“C-can I stay with you?”
Previously on Please Me
"So, have you made your decision?"
"Yes, come to collect the contracts Mr. Holland."
"Oh, no."
***
(warning: topics about abuse, and suicidal thoughts + anxiety attacks and teasing)
She stared at her phone, not again. Belle's tears started falling on her crimson cheeks, after such a lovely day she had to end up with negativity. The brunette was having another anxiety attack just by staring at the electronic message she had just received.
"Miss me?"
Belle sprinted to her sister's room hyperventilating, knocking on the door she awaited her sister's face to appear in front of hers. "Belle, what's wrong?" Luna questioned her sister in shock and confusion.
"H-He texted me," she spoke in between her sobs trying her hardest to stay strong. Belle wasn't always a shy girl, she was a Lorems. During her high school years, Belle was the popular girl but she was never the type to bully anyone or attack with negativity. Everyone adored her, her classmates, teachers, and the principal.
Typical high school story, she fell in love with the quarterback. Tim Grey, the high school playboy that made out with at least half of the girls in his school. Together they were inseparable, they both were high school sweethearts.
But, Tim started cheating on her several times and she had enough. Belle confronted him the night of their homecoming, screaming as loud as she could because she had the right to. After that confrontation, he started to play games with her mind, mentally abusing her.
"Tim?"
"Yes," she huffed downing her cold glass of water that her sister provided for her. It instantly calmed her nerves, allowing her to relax and speak clearly rather than being choked up. "Are you going to reply?"
"Seriously, Luna! This boy made my life a living hell! What would I even say," she whispered looking at her phone.
"Let's see what he wants!"
"Ugh, fine! If this goes wrong, I swear I will hurt you," Belle threatened her sister in which Luna put her hands up in surrender. Belle picked up her brand-new iPhone messaging him back asking him what he needed.
"Belle you need sleep," Luna heartedly warned her making her nod in comprehension. Belle walked to her room and snuggled into her bed.
***
The brunette stretched her body as she glanced at the clock, 8'o clock on a Friday. She didn't have any classes until Sunday but she knew she was going to be late for work. Rushing to her bathroom she proceeded with her daily routine including applying her makeup.
Mr. Holland informed her to wear a bold red lip, he just liked it on her he said. Belle then wore the first outfit she tried on yesterday which was the white top with a black pencil skirt with her kitten heels. Her hair was still the same as before, but softer curls at the end.
She ushered downstairs with her new laptop to see her dad having his breakfast, he took a glance and genuinely smiled at her, almost proud of her. "Good morning, dad. Will you drive me to my first day," she grinned pulling her leftover smoothie from the fridge and pouring it into her to-go cup.
"Of course, and sweetie I'd like to say something. I'm sorry for the behaviour I've been projecting towards you, I never realised how much you are worth and I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you. I am so sorry," Demitri looked up at her with sorrow smeared all over his face.
"It's okay, dad. I understand," she smiled at him making his expression change. He then got up to hug her in which she hugged back, but she was shocked as she hasn't hugged him for a decade.
"Let's go, shall we."
They both walk up to her dad's car, which was a fancy one of course. They both made their way to work, sat in a comfortable silence whilst Belle checked her emails to inform Mr. Holland later on.
"You have a good day today," the brunette spilt as she ran into the building knowing she was late. Her father waved back at her as he unpacked what was in his car. Sprinting out of the elevator everyone was minding their own business, which she thanked for. Belle walked into the hallway leading to her boss' office.
She gently knocked on the door, she didn't hear an answer though. Belle knocked again to not get a response, she huffed in annoyance and walked into the office to see Mr. Holland shirtless running and focusing intensely on the treadmill.
The Britt then realised that someone entered the room, he removed his Bluetooth earphones to see his new assistant and his partner blushing as she stared at his chest, her eyes trailing down and down and dow-.
"Belle, like what you see?" Mr. Holland smirked making her snap out of her gaze, she stared up at him again to see him walking towards her. Out of sheer panic, she walked backwards, her back hitting the wall she realised how close his face was to hers. His hands on both sides of her shoulders trapping her, the height difference making her look up at him and him down at her.
Mr. Holland tilted his head, smirking in the process he made his way to her cheek and placed a kiss. "What did I tell you, Belle," he whispered locking his eyes with hers. The sharp man then moved his head again.
"I told you I don't bite, only if you want me too. Kitten," he lustfully whispered making a soft moan escape her lips. Mr. Holland's lips then made their way to her neck, aching for his touch he knew that if he started he wouldn't stop. Instead, Mr. Holland blew air onto her neck making her back arch and a whine escaped her delicate lips.
Mr. Holland's eyes then met Belle's, the hunger in both of their eyes. But, he realised something in the eyes he loved to see, almost like a fear or anxiousness.
"Time to get to work," he whispered making her clear her throat to indicate that she's ready to start her day of work.
The next hour was Belle explaining to him all the meetings he's having later on, calls that were on hold, and emails plus paperwork to be approved. The brunette then moved on to read a huge load of paperwork whilst her boss was attending his first meeting of the day, he allowed her to sit at his table as he didn't mind at all.
During her extreme concentration she snapped when she realised that someone had entered the room, her gaze now at the door she froze in her seat unable to move. Belle's brown globes met ones that she never wanted to see again.
Tim Grey stood in the middle of the room, the tension between them both rising every second. Gathering all the courage she could, Belle closed the files as they were confidential and cleared her throat.
"What do you want," she simply questioned him in diplomacy.
"Didn't miss me?" Tim smirked allowing her to break into a cackle that confused him. Isn't she scared of him?
"Miss you? You abused me! Me! Because you did something wrong. Made me suicidal! Do you actually expect me to crawl back to you after what you did to me? Come on Tim you're smarter than that, all those years of teaching you manners yet you still don't learn!"
The blonde was baffled, how she had so much courage after what he had done to her. He did regret it, don't get him wrong. Tim wanted to see how she was after the many incidents, but he never got the courage, looked like he had it now.
"I just wanted to apologise, Belle. You went through so much and I couldn't bear it! I tried coming over, but I never had the courage to even do it! Do you expect me to think you'd crawl back? I am a bad man, Belle. I just need your forgiveness," he announced with sorrow in his eyes.
What he didn't know was how much Belle knew him, the sorrowful eyes were all an act to hide the evil. She's known him for so long, studied every movement. Belle wasn't an idiot and will not feed the fire. Her expression was anger, with her jaw clenched and eyes as cold as a blizzard.
As she was about to say something, she heard the door unlock. The brown-eyed girl stood up from the seat to see the one and only Mr. Holland stride in, soon to stop as he saw someone he had recognised.
"Tim? Tim Grey! It's been a while! How's Matthew," Mr. Holland questioned him in surprise as he shook his hand. Belle, on the other hand, a cold expression still plastered on her face. Luckily for her, Belle and Mr. Holland discussed a few words that would be said if something was wrong, meaning she could tell him indirectly.
As both men made their way towards the meeting table he had in his office, he realised the angry demeanour that was plastered on his partners face. Making him awfully puzzled, but continued to talk with the old friend.
"Belle, love."
"Yes, sir?"
"Postpone my next meeting, will you?" Mr. Holland nicely commanded his assistant which she obeyed.
"Sir, don't forget that I have to see my Daddy today. He's making pecan pie with vanilla flavoured ice cream on top, you're invited," she faintly smiled but her eyes burning into his as the suited man realised what she was trying to signal.
Belle used most of the words that they discussed the night before, she stressfully prayed that he had realised what she was trying to signal as she made her way to the other side of the room.
"Tim, I just noticed that some paperwork is needed to be approved. I'm so sorry to cut the time so short, but please come back whenever you want!" Mr. Holland sneakily slid into the conversation making his visitor nod in agreement.
"I'll bring him over, Tom! Don't worry," Tim smiled making his way to the door. The blonde then glanced at his former girlfriend, anger smeared all over her face he smirked as he walked out the door, making sure she noticed in which she did.
5 minutes pass to make sure he was gone, Mr. Holland walked to Belle to see her very frustrated and angry. "Kitten, what's wrong," he demanded to make her turn to face him. Her eyes the darkest it could be, jaw clenched she stared at him.
Belle then sat on his table as he took a seat on his chair, holding her fingers together so hard that her knuckles went white. "Tell me."
The brunette then spilt the whole story to him, making sure that no tears fall. She didn't want him to see her so vulnerable at her first day, but what she didn't expect was how infuriated and furious she was making him smirk in pleasure.
"What are you smirking for!?"
"You look sexy when you're angry," he replied in all honesty making the colour crimson greet her face another time. "You don't want to see my bad side, Sir," the brunette snapped back with a snigger laced around her lips.
"Really?" Mr. Holland questioned her as he stood up from her seat. Both of his large hands made their way to both sides of her thighs, grabbing it hard he pulled her forward so they were face to face.
Examing her facial features the Britt licked his lips charmingly, making her breaths deeper and deeper. "You don't want to see my bad side either, sugar," he breathed he saw her eyebrows lift in sass.
"I bet yours isn't as bad?" Belle smirked as she won the battle, but little did she know that she only was wanting more.
"Hm," Mr. Holland hummed. One of his hands then gently grasped her neck, his brown pools never breaking contact with hers. His thumb calmly rubbing her jawline as she licked her lips.
"So beautiful, don't be angry. You deserve better, and I'm here. Let's discuss this later shall we," his raspy voice boomed around the modern office as she nodded in agreement.
"But, something must be done," the brunette told his partner. His fingers were now on the collar of her shirt, realising that two buttons are undone. "People cannot see, cannot crave what's mine," he whispered closing the undone buttons.
"No one can glance at you, without going through me. You are mine, do you understand," his voice deep and raspy. Little did she know, that once he touches her she will never be the same.
"Well, hello there Tessa baby!" I coo as I walk into the house Friday afternoon, Tess dancing around my feet. I run a hand over her neck and face as she laps a quick kiss to my cheek. I lift my head and listen. The house is quiet, "Tom?"
"Living room, love. How was work?" Tom's tense voice carries through the house. I walk in and see Tom running a hand over his face stressfully, his phone in his hand that is resting on his knee.
"It was good," I say, voice trailing. Once I am closer to him, Tom stands and walks over to me pulling me into a hug. "You okay?" I ask, squeezing him a little closer to me, nuzzling my face into the crook of his neck.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," His voice comes out rushed, switching over to the Queens accent, making me smile. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out and do something today?"
"Like what?" I laugh, pulling away from him slightly to seeing how frazzled he is in his eyes.
"Uh, I don't know." He says swaying us back and forth. "Let's just do something. We can, uh-" he looks to the side then back at me- "let's get you out of your scrubs then we can go out and do something." Tom pushing me toward our room making me laugh louder as I walk backwards. He picks me up slightly, making me squeal and throws me on the bed and he turns back to our closet.
"Are you sure you're okay, Tom?" I call, sitting up on the bed, pulling my hair from its ponytail and letting it fluff out on my head.
"I'm perfect, love!" He calls back. He comes back with a pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt. He hands them to me, stopping to laugh at my fluffy hair, "You look like you have a mane, darling." He reaches out to attempt to tame it but in reality he only fluffs it more.
I swat his hands away, "You're making it worse, ya weirdo. I'll brush it after I change." I expect him to leave right away, instead he grabs the bottom of my shirt and attempts to pull it over my head, but I swat him away. "Figure out what we are doing and I'll change, okay?" I blush, giggling. He nods quickly before he slips out of the door, shutting it behind him. Something is definitely up. What is he not telling me? As I change I look up any articles online on my phone. All that comes up are articles from months ago about possible TomDaya sightings, so nothing on there. I run my hands into my hair and untangle it slightly, taming my hair. When I walk out, I see Tom quickly hanging up his phone, giving me a weary smile.
"So, I was thinking of you and I going to the park or we could go to the art fair that is in town or-"
I cut him off with another hug, he doesn't say anything else for a minute and just hugs me back. When he thinks that I am done, he pulls away. When he does a gently grab Tom's face and look at him. "Tom, what's wrong? And don't tell me that it is nothing, I can tell something's up." Tom looks down, his happy facade disappearing. "We're in this together, remember?"
"I know, I just wanted to do something with you. Just the two of us." He looks at me slightly, and sighs. "Is there anything you like to do?"
I watch him for a minute, hoping he will come out and tell me what's wrong, but he stays silent. "We could go out and visit that new bakery in town? The girls at work love it." I suggest, trying to get him to relax.
"That sounds like fun-"
"If we go, when we get home you have to tell me what is going on, okay? I don't believe that it's just because you want to do something with me. Not that I'm complaining on spending time with you..."
He lets out a small laugh, leaning into my hand. Nodding, Tom wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me closer, pressing a kiss to my forehead. When he pulls away, he turns on the radio and walks with me to the door so we can put our shoes on. Tom helps me slip on my coat and opens the door for me. I glance at him and see sadness in his eyes. Once we are in the car, and I back out of the driveway, I grab his hand and hold it.
"How was your day? Did you go to the gym with Haz?"
"Yeah," He says, shifting in his seat, "We just worked on basic stuff. Nothing super advanced."
"Anything you do is super advanced compared to anything I do." I laugh, making him smile.
"Maybe you should come come with us next time. I can show you how to box-"
"That is way to advanced for me, Holland. I'll stick to my own workout routine." I counter back.
"Which is what? I have never seen you work out since we moved in." He jokes back
"That's because you aren't awake when I do it." I tease, I glance to the side to see him roll his eyes, "Don't roll your eyes at me, mister!" I bat at his chest , causing him to bark with laughter.
"You're no fun." He teases playfully, smiling at me.
"I am the epitome of fun." I pout making him chuckle.
Tom begins playing with my fingers, moving my fake engagement ring around when he does. "So, uh, any funny stories from today?"
I nod, thinking back to my morning. "One of my elderly patients talked to me about her advice on marriage. A guy teased her and said that she has had so many guys after her that she has no room to talk, then they started arguing." I glance at Tom, seeing his jaw clenched slightly, "They were married."
"What?" Tom's face softens as he laughs.
"Yup, been married 40 years. He just enjoys giving her shit." I laugh. Tom smiles next to me, then I see his smile fall slightly. "Tom, c'mon, what's going on? You're worrying me-"
"Just a rough day, love. I'll tell you about it later." He avoids again.
I glance at him, before pulling into the bakery parking lot. Tom and I walk in and look at the vast menu. "Does anything look good, Tom?" I ask, slipping my arm around his and leaning my head onto his shoulder.
He hums next to me and nods, "I think I'll get a danish and a cup of tea. What about you, love?" He looks down at me, before pressing another kiss to my nose.
"I think I'll get (Y/F/B/G) and a hot chocolate." I say, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek.
"Why don't you go grab a table and I'll order." He suggests.
I nod and walk away from him as he gets to the front of the line. I sit by the vast window in the back that overlooks the park. I shrug off my coat and place it on the back of the chair. As I do, I notice a few girls have their phones out and are taking pictures of Tom's backside. I giggle to myself and place my head in my hand, turning and looking out the window to the chilly November day. People walk through the park with heavy winter coats, and stocking hats. The leaves have long since fallen off the trees leaving them bare to hold snow when the first storm comes through. Thoughts of Tom and I sitting nestled on the couch on a cold winter's day fills my thoughts, making me smile.
"Here you go, love." Tom's voice pulls me from my thoughts. He hands me my (Y/F/B/G) and hot chocolate before sitting down.
"Thank you, handsome." I smile, this causes him to smile back and the two of us eat our breaded sweets in silence. "Wanna bite?" I ask, especially since he hasn't tried to sneak a bite from me yet. He nods and I move the baked good over to him and he takes a big bite. The cream off the top coating the corner of his mouth. I giggle and lean across and wipe it off with my thumb. Tom blushes when I bring my thumb back to my lips and suck the cream off. He offers his danish to me wordlessly. I take a bite and smile at the sweetness in my mouth. "I think I might actually like yours better than mine."
"Would you like to switch?" He teases, offering his over again.
"Only if you do." I say back. Tom takes mine from my hand and hands me his. We finish after a few minutes and the two of us go back to looking outside, watching as people pass by.
Tom sighs next to me, "Is there anything specific you want to do with your family tomorrow?" He looks sad behind the smile on his face.
"Actually," I start, taking a sip of my hot chocolate, "my mom called on my drive home, her and my dad are heading up to see my grandparents this weekend instead. So, unless you would like to go up too, we have tomorrow to do whatever."
"I think I'd like to stay home, if that's alright?" He says.
"That's fine, but I would like to go up next weekend. You don't have to if you don't want to-"
"No, I'll go, I want to. I just, just want some time with you." His voice trails again. I reach across and grab his hand.
"Tom-"
"I'm just thinking about going to film in January, nothing to really worry about. I got some info from Curtis earlier today, I'm okay." He tries again. I watch him but nod, he'll tell me the real reason when we get home. After we spend about another hour at the bakery, Tom and I walk to through the art fair that is scattered around town before the two of us head home. He walks in to let Tess out while I grab the mail. The only thing in the mailbox is a large envelope. I pull it out and walk back up to the house opening it as I let myself in.
"Were we expecting anything in the mail, Tom?"
"Like what?" He calls back, his voice shaking slightly. He walks around the corner to see the packet in his hand. "(Y/N)-"
I pull the packet out and read the top, 'Terms of Divorce.' I stare at the packet and let out a shaky breath. "I thought these weren't supposed to come in for another two weeks."
"Curtis called me today and told me they were going to be coming in any day now." Tom whispers. I look up at him and see that he was looking at the papers in my hands in disgust. His behavior form earlier now makes sense. After a minute of tense silence, I walk and set the papers on the table. "Let's not worry about it tonight." Tom mutters, now standing behind me. He takes the papers and slides them so that they are no longer within my grasp.
"We have to talk about it some time." I mutter, staring at the papers, willing them to disappear. They don't.
"We will," Tom says, turning me away from the table and to him, holding my face in his hands. "Just not tonight. It's Friday, let's order takeout and we can watch a movie, or some shit. Make it a normal Friday night, spend it with my wife and princess." He almost begs.
I smile slightly, and nod. "Yeah, you order something and I'll go pick it up."
"I can have someone deliver it-"
"Nah," I say walking away from him to grab a glass from the cupboard, doing anything to distract myself, "I can go pick it up. You get the fun part of picking out the movie."
He laughs, but I can hear how forced it is. He pulls his phone out and orders from the Italian place that the two of us went out to the first time. The tension in the air is so thick, it could be cut with a knife. Once he hangs up, he lets out a sigh. "It'll be about twenty minutes-"
"I'll just head over, it'll take about that much time for me to get there." I say, smiling at him. He opens his mouth to say something but, nothing comes out, so he just nods and follows me to the door. He hands me a credit card then helps me into my coat. I wave at him once I get in the car and I start driving. After a minute, I pull over and open the glove box and see the ring box. I slowly reach for it and pull it out. The ring is nestled in the fabric snugly, I take it out and turn it in my hands. A shaky breath slips past my lips as a tear rolls down my cheek. I pull my phone out of my pocket, it illuminates with a picture of Tom and I from when he got home on Sunday that Haz had taken.
"Divorce papers are in. Its now or never, I guess." I whisper, breaking the last bit of silence before I set the ring down and start driving again.
BNHA self insert AU [Book 2]
Lost and confused? Read this post to catch up!
Chapter 6: Dear Diary, I Couldn’t Find My Diary...
It’s still one more day until move in! Luckily for me, I don’t have to babysit anyone’s brat on this fine Sunday.
“Hey mom” I called out for my mom from the couch “can we watch your iconic fight?”
“Oh sure! I have it saved under high school fights on the digital library” she yelled back from the laundry room “it should be the first one on the list.”
I scroll through the digital library on the TV and the robo doggy jumped up on the couch to take their ‘nap’.
“It still creeps me out that your robo does normal dog functions” Hoshi spoke up.
“Huh? What’s so weird about it?” I asked genuinely confused on their feeling.
“Like they bark, talk, sleep, growl and even pretends to eat at meal times” he looks at the little robo “I didn’t know these things were programed like that.”
“Oh this is the original robo dog and my mom and her friends made for their intel class project” I found the section mom what talking about as I talked “this one has a completely different set of internal devices and mechanics from what’s produced now. Uncle Jin says this AI is different too, Mr Muffins is programed to be a house pet, security bot and learning AI but this was his best at that time.” I tried to remember what else Jin told me “Oh! and his coat was hand sewn by my mom and repaired over the years to preserve the memory of her childhood pet.”
“That’s so sweet actually” Hoshi had a change of heart and pet the napping robo “looks like the rest is history huh?”
“Yup, speaking of” I click on the video “heres the video of that fight.”
We watched the video in awe on how the first two teams failed in the beginning and how my mom, Mimi and Jin just plow through the beginning like nothing. I noticed on how much they didn’t use quirks unless it was necessary for escape. Their roles changed so much in the fight and they all take turns taking the lead, that gave me a few ideas for new formations. We finally got to the part that made the fight iconic.
“Oh hey, that’s my dad and his friends” Hoshi’s eyes lit up “look how young they look! Heh I see why Nejire calls Tamaki chicken feet! Man’s feet are exposed, toes looking like they belong on a farm.”
I stifle my laugher and playfully hit Hoshi “Shut up! I’m trying to pay attention to the fight!”
He stayed quiet as the next part was crazy! I don’t even know how to describe it other than mom tricked all three of them into capture. The last part where she phased into the ground to escape the man’s grip to pop back up, naked and finished the electrical field for the kill. Ending the video with them holding hands as they cross the finish line. My jaw was on the floor.
“That was incredible! Your mom’s friends are just” Hoshi was trying to find the right words “I don’t even know what to say! Why does my dad even bother with those three? Anybody with common sense wouldn’t pick another fight with those three after an ass beating like that!”
“Didn’t they tell you?” my dad said, startling us.
“Tell us what?” Hoshi and I said curiously.
“Your mom and your dad used to date” my dad casually dropped as he took a sip of his canned orange juice “back in my first year, it didn’t last obviously, but that really put your mom on the popular scope at school. And this fight dethroned Mirio from his popular status and made your mom the one to take the spot.”
“My dad dated your mom?” Hoshi was in disbelief “that makes sense! His weird obsession with her and why your mom doesn’t want to work with him” he put everything together in his head “my dad has been harassing her for years because she was the only one that put him in his place!”
“It’s my specialty!” Mom chimed in with a basket of fresh laundry “your dad had this whole plan to convert me into a hero because I was over powered and rare combination of double quirked. His plan fell through when he got me mad and broke up with me weeks later” she smirked “jokes on him, I hid my second quirk and gave him the slip in that fight when I showed up. If you should learn anything about me, it’s that I’m always 10 steps ahead of the enemy.”
“It’s true, that’s why you’re the queen of spars” my dad put his arm around her waist “smart, beautiful, powerful and witty...And all mine.”
Mom sneered at dad’s move on her but blushed “O si? Okay then Casanova” she phased right through him and replaced her hips with the laundry basket so he was holding it instead “you can put your laundry away, King of Order!”
“Aw I thought I got you there” dad laughed and sighed “all these years and I can’t land a single upper handed flirt.”
“10 steps ahead!” Mom said as she walked away “never forget it babe!”
“Mr. Iida, why did you continue to pursue her?” Hoshi asked like a child asking where babies come from “she was clearly out of your league in so many ways.”
“I was friends with her before we dated, we were so close and she opened up to me about her traumas when I was being nosey” Dad fixed his grip on the basket “and I kept those secrets along with other secrets. We had a deep trust and a different kind of bond that didn’t cross the line. So love wasn’t too far off and boy was I the stubborn one.”
I love my parent’s dynamic to the point of wanting what they have for each other. That gave me an idea once my dad went upstairs. “Let me show you my favorite home video!” I pull up my parent’s wedding video.
“Look how young your parents are!” Hoshi awed “OH THOSE ARE MY PARENTS!” he yelped as he pointed at a couple in the background “and my mom was pregnant so that means my brother is in there and my older brother was maybe like 2 or 3 at the time.” He sighed “what a lovely wedding, your uncle and aunty really know how to plan a wedding!”
“Right?! But my favorite part is coming up” we watch as the video transitioned from my parents running out of the church to the reception “here, the first dances are my favorite!”
Hoshi watched the dances with awe “Oh! That’s the ballroom move you came up with! This is were you got it from?”
“Yup, it’s my favorite dance move but obviously I need a partner to perform it” I sighed “I really like ballroom dancing but I was really good at ballet that I just stuck with it and didn’t do much ballroom when I was in my private lessons.”
Hoshi stands up and sticks his hand out “You have me, let’s dance together!”
I giggled “I’d be a fool to refuse a dance from you!” I take his hand and we clumsily danced to pass the time. We didn’t notice my parents looking on from the stairs.
“Is that what we looked like?” Tenya whispered “no wonder everyone pushed me to say something.”
“How do you think I felt? It took so much self control not to kiss you” Ita whispered back “but I’m afraid history is going to repeat itself.”
“Oh those poor kids are going drive themselves crazy” Tenya sighed then smiled “but I’d do it all again and fix the last part of 3rd year.”
“I’d just connect the kiss at the dance, get all the weird shit out of the way” Ita slapped Tenya’s ass, startling him “we could’ve skipped the after party and jumped straight into bed with you~”
Tenya turned red from the bold statement “Well, that’d still be one of the best nights of my high school years.”
-Dorm move in day-
Both of my parents decided to come even though I asked them just drop us off at the curb of the dorms. I don’t mind my mom accompanying me, it’s my dad I’m concerned about. He tends to get emotional every time I go through a new phase of life, it’s embarrassing.
“OH HONEY LOOK!” dad pointed at the commons room “they kept the cat tree!”
“Oh shit that means-” mom gasped as she searched for something in the room. Dad joined her in the search.
“Um, who’s the weirdos in the commons room?” asked a passing classmate that stopped to see.
I sighed stressfully “Those weirdos are my parents and I have no idea what they’re looking for.”
“FOUND THEM!” my mom jumped up with a cat in her hands “Tenya look! They’re a chonky wonky.”
We watch as my parents coo and pet the cat “Oh gross they’re baby talking the cat” I take a deep breath “it’s like they’re teenagers!”
“I think it’s cute that they act like they’re still young” Hoshi chuckled “so carefree and madly in love with each other, couple goals.”
Sensei walks out of their quarters and spots my parents “Ugh it’s like I’M in high school again” he rubbed his forehead “get a room! geez and put Clawford down!”
“It’s name is Clawford?!” my mom squealed “so cute ahhhhh! I’m gonna cry!”
“Sensei, can we get the dorms unlocked?” said the classmate “I just remembered what I came out here for heh.”
“OH? They’re locked?” sensei and our classmate walk off.
“Locked? Hmm, I wonder if I can warp in my old room” mom pondered as she put the cat on the cat tree “it’s this first one in this hall.”
“That’s the boys side?” I observed.
“The school did your mom so dirty with the accommodations our first year” my dad explained “she lived among the boys hall, used the shared bathroom with us and did laundry in the shared laundry room until 2nd year” he pointed out the window “then she moved into the proper dorms, right over there with your uncle and aunty.”
“Oh my god TENYA COME!” my mom cried out as she opened the door of her old room. My dad ran in and we followed “they got balconies! do you know how much easier life here could’ve been if we had these!”
I watch my parents geek out again, then I looked at the name plate “Hmm, this isn’t a claimed room.” I turned around to see the other door’s name plate “wanna find your room Hoshi?”
“Sure” they walk with me down the hall “I wonder what happened in these halls when your parents where here!”
“A whole lot of my mom causing chaos” I smirked “dad and his friends told me of her iconic roasts and other quips she said that caused big reactions.”
We find his dorm and called my mom over to open it from the inside “Oh this was Shoji’s room!” she reminisced before warping in and opening the door “I wonder what happened to him after that huge fight in Chiyoda a few years back.”
“He’s alive and well but he’s not in hero work” dad answered “but it has been a while since I last spoke to them, maybe we should pay him a visit soon.”
“Well in any case, Lets get your things from the van Hoshi” mom said as she held her hand out “I’ll warp us there.”
I watch them warp out, then turned to dad “Which one was your room?”
“It was the dorm closest to the shared bathroom” he chopped to the room down the hall “or if you’re everyone else in the class, 5 doors down from the love of my life.”
“Oof that type of classmates” I laughed then I thought about what my mom said about their old classmate “Hey, are you in constant contact with your old classmates? I know the ones that come by the house and invite us to their events, but what about the others?”
“Well, as much as I wanted all of us to stay together like we used to” he fixed his glasses and sighed sadly “I haven’t seen our good friend Aoyama for 10 years, just the occasional video and card. Sato is another good friend that I know is well but runs a business and does hero work, so no time to socialize. Oh and sweet Hagakure, she’s a mystery in itself! Haven’t seen her since I married your mom! Kota travels all over the world lending his voice to help all sorts of animals, not that he talked much to humans anyways. Asui is too wrapped up raising a whole pond of kids nowadays. And I think that’s all of them.”
“Oh that’s not that many” I counted them on my hands “then your class was bigger than mine!”
“Yes but also technically your mom didn’t count in the official count in our hero class” he said as she warped in with all of Hoshi’s boxes “I was just talking about you! And the classmates we haven’t seen in ages.”
“I’m seriously missing Aoyama!” my mom reminisced “my eyes hurt every-time I look at him but I’ll be damned if he didn’t appreciate a good flashy piece!” she turned to me “Okay, your turn to settle in! I saw more people roll up.”
“Oh shit okay!” I refocused on moving in “see you later Hoshi!” Later found my room on the next floor up and took more time than I thought getting things laid out. I walk out to my balcony and see what I can put to occupy the space I didn’t plan for. Then my attention was shifted by the loud muffled music coming from the other dorm building. Mom said that intel students party hard because school rules don’t apply to them, she also said that not to crash their parties or I’m going to get my ass beat. I believe her so I’ll keep my distance. Then I looked at the balcony below me, I wonder who’s my next floor neighbor? I cut a piece from my practice muslin bolt to make a rope ladder and made my decent. I took a good look and it was Hoshi! I jumped onto their balcony and knocked on their sliding door.
“Knock Knock neighbor! May I borrow a cup of sugar?”
“What the? Lili?!” Hoshi opened the door “is this allowed?”
“What’s sensei gonna do? Oooh! I’m soooo scared to get a sticky ball on me!” I sarcastically acted out as I walked in his room “but dang your room looks so lively! I like where you moved your bed.”
“Thanks! I was just organizing my closet” he pointed to his empty boxes “I’m trying to figure out what to do with these.”
“Save them for move out?” I suggested as I was looking at his desk and a picture caught my attention “hey, who’s that in the picture?”
He looked at what I was pointing at “Hm? Oh! That’s my mom” he picked up the picture to show me “This is my favorite candid of her, I keep her around when I need a little pick me up.”
“You look so much like her” I pointed out “the same icy hair, light blue eyes and smile.” I then remembered something from when we were leaving Hoshi’s house “hey, um who’s Hime? If you don’t mind me asking.”
The smile disappeared from Hoshi’s face “Um, well that’s my...my old name.”
His tone made me realize that it was a sensitive topic “Oh, OH! I’m sorry if I hit a nerve! I didn’t-”
“It’s okay! You didn’t know and I’m comfortable enough to talk about it” he took a deep breath “I was born Hime Togata and I was raised like how I was named, like a princess, dresses in all sorts of colors and dollies. I wasn’t bratty or anything but my family spoiled me because I was the only girl but I wanted the attention of my mom.” his smile came back “I only wanted to wear those dresses and play princess with my mom because she was the loveliest person to be around. She taught me all about being good and how to be a better person to others. Imagine my poor little heart when she died, I felt like I lost my best friend and I didn’t want to wear the dresses anymore because it hurt too much. I didn’t want to play princess or smile anymore because my reason to do so was gone” he wiped his tears “then I showed signs of my quirk and my dad was extra obsessive of me and put me right to training. I didn’t want to do that either! I didn’t want to be hero or my dad’s prodigy child, I just wanted to have somebody to make me feel happy again and for things to make sense.” He turned to me “then I met you, when you played with me, that was the first time I smiled in a long time. You were different and so sure about who you wanted to be, I wanted to be like that and it gave me the courage to make my wishes come true. Things back home were getting worse and worse but I held on to that wish. At 12 years old, I decided to change my name to Hoshi and made the physical changes to be more masculine. Because it felt comfortable, it felt more like the real me!”
I was straight up crying “Hoshi what the fuck?! Like, I actually love that for you!”
“You’re actually crying!” he laughed and wiped my tears “but I have to thank you for everything. For being yourself, for accepting me, for saving me in more ways than physical.”
He held me so tightly that it knocked the wind out of me, but I welcomed it. I never thought of myself as somebody’s savior but he said it like I was divinity. Theres those warm feelings again, feeling small like a baby in their parent’s arms. How this boy reduced me to such!
“Oi Togata-kun” hollered and knocked one of our classmates, interrupting the moment “can you help us with moving Toei-kun’s furniture?”
“Uh yea! Be right there!” Hoshi broke the hug and refocused “you should probably head up your room, I’ll see you later.”
I climb up the rope ladder to my room and decide to keep it there for quick travel to each-other’s room. As I reach my room, I see all 7 of my female classmates in my room, giving me that look.
“Soooo, where does that rope ladder lead to?” said one of them.
“That’s none of your business” I responded “why are you guys in my room?”
“I was knocking and thought you died so we jumped balconies to see if you were alive” responded a different classmate “then I saw the rope ladder and figured you were busy. Then we all gathered here.”
“Come on Iida-san! We saw you come with Togata-kun” coaxed my classmate “your parents basically treated him like he was part of the family! Just say you two are a thing, we’re supportive of this ship.”
“My parents are just nice people!” I was heavily dismissing these assumptions “plus, well, Hoshi is going through a lot lately with things at home. I kinda don’t want to leave him alone for a while until things are better” I fixed my glasses and sighed “we’re just really good friends.”
“Oh I’m sorry that he’s going through it” winced a classmate “now I kinda feel like an asshole for assuming.”
“It’s all good, you didn’t know” I smiled then my stomach growled real loud “oh wow that was loud hehehe, guess we should figure out dinner?”
We all make our way to the kitchen to see there ain’t no fuckin’ food except dry pasta. Turns out (but to nobody’s surprise) Mineta sensei didn’t get all the arrangements done to get us food. And I did what any girl with my status did... I called my aunty Midnight and told her that I was hungies and there was no food. And that’s how I got whole class pizza for dinner that night.
“Iida-san you shouldn’t just call a pro-hero like that!” scolded the class rep “what would your father say?!”
“My daddy won’t say shit! He knows how I get when I don’t get food first!” I huffed as I was feeling very hangry “if anything he’d do the same thing and personally deliver it to me!”
“Thanks Iida-san! We appreciate your efforts!” cheered the rest of the class.
“See, everyone else isn’t complaining” I crossed my arms “I get things done!”
“Your daddy also got things done” chuckled sensei “he was class rep when I was in high school. Great guy but he’s so dorky!”
“My dad was class rep?” I perked up “I mean it suits him but he’s like me?”
“Yup OH! I can show you!” he pulls up a video on his phone “heres a video from our 2nd year, your mom put my friend on the flag pole by the briefs.”
“...and for the last time, just so it gets through your thick head, NO I WILL NOT GO OUT WITH YOU!” blared the familiar voice of young mom.
“AHHHHhhhhhGUAHHHHH!” cried out the yellow haired boy as an unseen force pulls the back of his underwear that hung on the top of the flag pole.
“ITA! Get him down this instant!” demanded young dad, with the iconic chops.
“You can’t tell me what to do Tenya!” yelled young mom at dad “the boy had it coming! He put his hand on my ass!”
“I don’t care! DON’T WALK AWAY FROM ME!”
“Get bent you square!” young mom retorted as she warped out.
“Dang it! DON’T WORRY DENKI! I’LL GET YOU DOWN!” assured young dad as he made some calls and got him down in a few minutes.
“I still can’t believe he married your mom” sensei shuddered “she’s not a force to be reckoned and had kicked your dad’s ass multiple times! On and off the field.”
“Why do you still have that video sensei?” asked Hoshi, almost too scared to know the answer to that.
“Every-time that girl gets to fighting” he puts his phone away “she makes it into a spectacle and at the time nobody could figure out how to defeat her. So we’d record her fights and study them so we could have an idea on her weak points.”
“Has anybody succeeded?” I asked.
“Nope, she’s too unpredictable and brash” he sighed in defeat “her roasts were too devastating that they would end me instantly without her touching me!”
“I’m suddenly feeling less and less secure on sensei’s abilities to protect us” spoke up on the the girls. And everyone nodded in agreement.
The pizza comes and it looks like my mom paid for it from the receipt notes. I didn’t think much of it but everyone else was.
“What does your mom do for a living?!” asked one of my classmates “I know sensei said that she’s not in hero work but if she’s powerful and tactful PLUS can afford to buy us all pizza on a whim, what or where does she work in?”
“She’s the CEO of RoboDog INC and works as an independent unit with the Emperor’s Coup” I say before taking a bite of my pizza.
“I WAS WONDERING WHY SHE LOOKED SO FAMILIAR!” screamed the classmate that saw her in the commons room “oh my gosh Iida-san! Your mom is one of the most powerful women in the country and she’s just roaming around in public like that?!”
“I mean, she’s just living her best life” I responded before swallowing my bite “my mom taught me that simplicity and hard work is the way to go, she’s humble and gives back to the community.”
“Yup, she’s one of the school’s biggest donors” sensei spoke up “she’s the reason we have a botanical sanctuary garden and why we have a very expansive and stable international student program” he wiped his mouth “oh and a music program, wish we had that when I was a student.”
“Wow your mom really does care” said another classmate in awe “tell her we said thank you!”
All that affirmation made me feel good. It’s way better than being treated coldly at the dance academy. That night I went to sleep feeling much better about my stance in hero school... lets see how tomorrow goes!
Bella’s song choice: No More Sad Songs by Little Mix
I woke up the next morning to the sound of my own snoring. I turned over in the bed, nearly forgetting that I slept in Jack’s room. I sat up, realizing that the green man was nowhere to be seen. When I pulled up my phone to check the time, I saw at text from him.
“Didn’t want to wake you, so I took the bus to school! I’ll text you when I’m out!”
Thoughtful.
It was half past eleven. I actually managed to sleep without waking up throughout the night, a rare occurrence. It’s even more rare when I know I have a guest coming over the next day. I rolled out of bed, knowing that he was going to show up at one point or another. I put my unwashed hair in a ponytail, then I did my makeup. Sure, Ethan and I would be hanging out here, but I wanted to look nice regardless.
Although, in the middle of my routine, it occurred to me that Ethan never specifically said what time he would be showing up. All he said was that he was going to be coming over. I contoured stressfully. I highlighted urgently. I had to skip winged eyeliner because my hands started shaking. By the time I finished, I heard a knock on the door. I almost relaxed, until I remembered that Jack wasn’t here to answer the door for me.
It’s not Ethan, a voice in my head warned. You’re probably getting evicted. Or it’s the scary mailman. Or maybe it’s a stalker.
I slowed my steps to the door, my heart palpitating. Just before I could panic, my phone buzzed in my hand. I sighed when Ethan confirmed through text that he was at the door. I had kept him waiting for a bit while I had that internal crisis. Oops.
When I opened the door, I didn’t expect to be greeted by a dog. Specifically, Chica. I gasped in shock, which made Ethan smile and Chica wag her tail.
“Beeka!” I exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”
I stepped aside to let them in, and then I attacked Chica with cuddles. I was so pleasantly surprised to see her after so long, I could have bawled my eyes out. I didn’t even care that she licked my face just after doing my makeup, I was completely over the moon.
“I heard somewhere that you missed her,” Ethan explained as he squatted to our level on the floor. “And she missed you too.”
“Aww,” I cooed, hugging the sweet dog. “I can’t believe you did this!”
As happy as I was too see her again, a certain thought plagued the back of my head. It was enough to make my heightened mood falter a little bit.
“Does Mark know… does he know where you took his child?” I asked.
Ethan hesitated, which only worsened my mood. “I'm supposed to take her to the field at YTU for a walk. And he's supposed to meet me there later.”
“Ethan,” I said urgently.
“And that's why,” he continued, “I came here first. I wanted to see if you wanted to come with me.”
“That would require having to see Mark,” I pointed out. That also brought forth the fact that I was still salty with my ex-boyfriend, which made the air a little awkward.
“No,” Ethan said after the moment passed. “You don't have to stay long if you don't want to. I know things are, uh, weird with you guys. I just… I-I mean, I… I wanted to see you for a little bit. A-And so did Chica! I mean, look at her.”
She was on her back, her dopey face making my heart go soft. I made eye contact with Ethan, whose face also made my heart soften up.
“Alright, then. Do you wanna go now?”
Ethan's face lit up. “Yeah! I can drive!”
That sent my mind to dark, scary places. I was never not driving. How could I just… not drive?
“Um, how about I meet you there?” I offered. “I mean, I'm gonna have to take Jack home later, like when you're in class or something… so like…”
“Oh, okay. I'll, uh, see you there. You know where the field is, right?”
Nope. “Yeah! I'll find you guys!”
Thankfully, we got there around the same time, so nobody got lost. I had never been to the “football” field at YTU before, so I was having some major butterflies and chest pains. All I knew was that it was as big as a football field, despite that the university didn’t have an official team. Or any sports team, besides dance. It was a place I've never been to before with my ex-boyfriend's dog and the guy I now wanted to be my boyfriend. It was sending my anxiety down to the pits of hell.
There was one class out on the opposite end of the field when we got there. Despite the cold, bitter weather, my palms and the back of my neck were were sweating. But I got to hold the leash as we walked Chica, so that helped subside the general anxiety.
“Do you like the campus?” I asked, my voice shaking slightly.
“Yeah, it's amazing,” Ethan replied. “Now I know where all our pay cuts went to.”
I chuckled. “Well, you're not wrong.”
“I really wanted to get a dorm here, but I guess if you can't afford a single one then you're randomly assigned a roommate,” he explained. “And I really didn't want that.”
“Oh yeah, I know what you mean. That's what made me get my own apartment.”
We talked while walking around the field. Things got easier the longer we were there. The butterflies came and went, making me unable to tell if it was the normal butterflies or not.
“I still can’t believe you snuck her to my house,” I said, looking down at Chica.
“Well, you told me you missed her,” Ethan said, “and I just assumed you’d want to see her again… without having to see Mark.”
Considerate.
“That would be correct. Drunk Bella did one good thing for me.”
He chuckled. “When were you drunk?”
I hesitated. I didn’t want him to think I was some raging alcoholic, or that I was out partying every weekend. Oh god, this was bad. I couldn’t lie to him.
“Come on, what were you doing, Bella?” he playfully teased, poking my shoulder.
“Um… when we were talking after your stream on Saturday,” I admitted. “Had some whiskey. It was… lit.”
“Was this the same night you and Jack ate those peppers?”
Oh god, he thinks I’m dating Jack. No, no, I’m single and sad even though I didn’t want to be. Even though I rejected Ethan a couple of weeks back, I still wanted to date him. But he probably thought we were out here just as friends.
“Yeah,” I said. “Uh, you know: Just little things with your roommate.”
“Oh, I didn’t know you guys lived together.”
Well, now I’m just digging myself deeper. Now I had to use logic to calm myself down.
“He stays at my place during the semester,” I explained nervously. “I have an extra room… and uh, technically Mark was the one who pretty much made him stay with me.”
“Oh wait!” Ethan exclaimed, palming his forehead. “Jack did mention that! He told me that…” He paused, almost like he was choosing his words carefully. “He said that… Mark didn’t like you guys living together, like, while you guys were dating.”
I looked down at the grass, my heart palpitating at that memory. Yes, palpitating. Usually, I block panic attacks out of my head from how traumatic they are, but the one caused by that argument was harder to suppress. I chewed the inside of my cheek before speaking again.
“He got… jealous,” I told Ethan, deciding to be honest. “I don’t have many friends at all. Jack was the first friend I made in a long while, and we got close pretty fast. That happened mainly because back in like, January, Mark suggested that Jack should live with me for the semester. Then he got upset, and we argued, and I had a pretty bad panic attack. But uh, me and Jack are still friends so that’s all that matters to me.”
The silence between us got nerve wracking pretty quickly. Surely Ethan was going to be on Mark’s side about this. Frankly, I didn’t want to hear it.
“But anyway, I don’t wanna rant too much about my ex,” I said, glossing over the subject.
“Mark made you have a panic attack?” Ethan asked. “That’s a little fucked up.”
“Yeah,” I agreed. “It was shitty, but we got over it.” And then a few months later, he left me.
It felt weird talking about my ex to Ethan, who now worked for him. It was even weirder now that his feelings were out and about. I had to talk about other things now, and only one particular thing came to mind.
“You, uh, you said you have ADHD?” I asked, hoping I didn't hit a nerve. “Or, uh, you told me you understood having a mental illness…”
“Yeah,” he replied, yet it didn't feel like the mood darkened. “Since I was a kid. It was pretty bad. Or, it is pretty bad.”
Is this how normal people felt when they pestered mentally ill people with invasive questions? I didn't want to be annoying, but I was curious. I wanted to know more about his condition, especially if we were eventually going to start seeing each other. I wanted to know how it would affect us, like my anxiety would.
“I don't wanna be nosy o-or invasive-” I began.
“You can ask me anything,” Ethan said.
I quietly sighed in relief. “So you said it is pretty bad. Have you never been treated for it?”
“Yeah, I used to be on medication when I was in high school. But the side effects changed my personality so much that it wasn't worth it for me,” he explained. “I felt like a completely different person, and I didn't like it. Now, I'm finding other ways to deal with it.”
I know the feeling of medication. Granted, I was only on it for six days, but I did feel plenty of drastic changes.
“Can I ask about your anxiety?” Ethan suddenly prompted.
The shift was unexpected, but I nodded. Here we go.
“Do specific things make you anxious?”
“You want a list?” I asked in response.
He chuckled. “Why not?”
Oh god, he's serious. I hesitated, trying to shake it off with a laugh. He should know, it would explain a lot of my behavior.
“I-It just sounds really dumb when I say any of it out loud,” I explained sheepishly.
“Aww no,” he consoled. “Hey, look. I have days where I can't form a coherent sentence. Sometimes I put my phone down for two minutes and I'll forget where I've put it. Sometimes I just really, really want to sleep, but my mind is so restless that it doesn't let me. And… what was I talking about?”
I was touched that he shared all of that so easily. I couldn't help but smile. “Specific triggers and quirks about our disorders,” I reminded him.
“Right…” He looked at me, returning the smile. “Now it's your turn.”
“Okay.” I took a deep breath. “I'm absolutely terrified of answering the phone. I exclusively text and email, or whatever doesn’t require speaking. I can't be in crowded spaces or parties, especially by myself. In class, I either sit in the back or close to the wall, and I don't know why, I just have to. And… I have a huge laundry list of triggers...”
“Wait, parties?” Ethan repeated. “But you went to homecoming.”
“Yeah, I had tequila to help me cope with that. And I don't like having to drink in order to cope with social situations, so I don't go out.”
He hummed. “That's why you were so talkative.”
I blushed at the memory, even though it was still kind of blurry. “Oh god, if I said anything too personal or embarrassing… Oh god, I'm so sorry.”
Ethan smiled wider. “It's okay. It was nice to talk to someone, especially because I was - or, still am - new here. It was fun.”
Still embarrassing. Still made me want to die inside. That was also the second time I mentioned drinking to cope, so now he definitely thought I was some unstable alcoholic.
“Well, I'm glad my drunk self provided some entertainment for you,” I told him.
“Are you nervous right now?” he asked.
There's this weird thing where I'll be anxious about something, but I would ignore it and let it sit in the back of my head. Then, when it's pointed out, it would come back a bit more intense than it already was. So when Ethan inadvertently made me think about the bad case of nerves I was experiencing, I hesitated and looked at him with urgent eyes.
“That's a yes,” he assumed. “Oh no, did I do something?”
“No, no, no, no!” I quickly said. “No, it's not you, it's just - fuck, can we sit down?”
We stopped in our tracks and sat on the grass. Chica graciously lied between us, and I was even more grateful that she was here. The more I pet her and looked at her happy face, the quicker the nerves came down.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asked cautiously. “Do you need anything?”
I shook my head, trying to slow my breathing. My head was spinning. “I just, it's that… I get anxious over everything.” I started to ramble. “Like, I can't answer the phone, or the door… I can't go to the store without crying in the car for fifteen minutes before going inside. I'm nervous about every little thing, so this… it's nothing you did or said. Sometimes I can't tell what's normal nerves or irrational nerves. But, on the bright side, I'm not having a panic attack.” I said all of this very quickly and breathlessly.
He was nodding at every word. “Okay… so you're fine?”
“I will be. I'm so sorry.”
“It's okay, you can't really help it. Right?”
Exactly. I can't help it, this is just how it is. It's what we have to deal with.
I nodded, feeling the sense of self-loathing. I couldn't just have a simple walk with a cute guy and a cute dog, could I? “Can I ask you another question about your ADHD?”
“Sure.”
“Do you ever hate it?”
He paused for a moment. I could tell he was looking at me, but I didn't return the gaze. “I have my moments, or days, where it really fucking sucks. I used to resent it when I was younger. But now, I think it… adds a little spark to my personality. Like, if there was a cure for it, I wouldn't take it, because it's helped shape me into who I am now. And… I like who I am.”
This isn't relatable anymore. In fact, I wanted to cry, but I couldn't do it in front of him. I just focused on petting Chica.
“I wish I could be like that,” I admitted. I could have explained more about how much I hated having anxiety disorder, and how much it's taken away from me. But this time with Ethan was supposed to be fun and happy, and I already ruined it.
Ethan was about to say something else, had he not heard his name called from a distance away. He turned, and well… I should have left a while ago. Or maybe I shouldn’t have come at all.
“Shit,” I whispered as I saw Mark walking towards us.
We both stood up, and I quickly gave the leash to Ethan. My life was flashing before my eyes, I just couldn’t look like it. My eyes stayed on the top of Chica’s head.
“Hey,” Ethan greeted, sounding cautious. “When did you get here?”
“Just now,” Mark replied. “What’s going on here? You guys know each other?”
“Y-Yeah. We’re friends.” He sounded nervous.
“I told him the other day how much I missed Chica,” I added, suddenly looking up. “He invited me out here.”
Mark nodded once. I could be super paranoid, but I felt bad vibes. My anxiety was suddenly replaced with defense.
“How long has this been going on?” he asked.
“‘Why? Is there a problem?” I said back.
He scoffed. “Well, my friend and my ex-girlfriend apparently know each other. I’m guessing you guys started talking after Ethan moved here… did no one care to think how I’d feel about that?”
“I’m sorry,” Ethan said, looking down.
My defense and anger only went up. I wanted to protect him. I glared at Mark.
“I hang out with Jack, are you going to yell at him again?” I asked spitefully.
“Well, how do you think I should react to this?” His deep voice was intimidating, but somehow I stood my ground.
“I think what I do in my spare time and what Ethan does in his spare time shouldn’t concern you,” I snarked.
Mark narrowed his eyes. “Ethan, can you take Chica to my car?”
He passed his keys over to the silent boy next to me. I felt awful that Mark was probably going to give him shit about this later. I wanted to protect him from that. I wanted to take all the shit for him.
“What are you doing, Bella?” Mark asked when Ethan was out of earshot.
I folded my arms and gave him a look. “Nothing. What do you think I’m doing?”
“I don’t know. Since when do you talk to my editor?”
“Since I was sitting alone at homecoming and he didn’t know anybody, so we kept each other company!” I stepped closer to Mark, holding up an angry finger. “I swear to god, if you give Ethan a hard time about this - if you start treating him the way you did to Matt and Ryan-”
“I’m not-”
“So help me god-”
“I’m not going to yell at him!” Mark snapped. “Just… why do you always end up taking my friends?”
I shrugged, still exasperated. “You’re friends with decent people! And I’m not in any place to pass of friendship right now. It’s not my fault Ethan’s a sweetheart!”
Mark didn’t like those words apparently. “Yeah? Are you telling him all your deep dark secrets as well?”
“It always goes back to that, doesn’t it?” I asked. I wanted to pull my hair out. How dare he throw that in my face.
“You’re not the only one who was hurting in our relationship, Bella.”
“Well, you dropped me unexpectedly and then found someone new, so if you wanna talk about pain…” I paused to let out a spiteful laugh. “You made me feel like everything was going to be okay. You made me feel safe and secure… so much, that I actually thought about a future with you.”
“You had a shitty way of showing it,” Mark said resentfully. “I was giving everything I had to be there for you. I was fighting for you, for us! But every time I took one step forward, you took ten steps back! Then you decided to put all of your trust into someone who wasn’t me, your boyfriend! It was like you stopped trying to trust me, so I stopped trying too.”
“Then you found stable little Amy,” I grumbled.
“Okay, you know what?” His voice raised. “Everyone’s got their problems! At least stable little Amy doesn’t sit there and play the victim! It’s a two way street, and you weren’t giving anything anymore! With or without Amy, you left me with no choice!”
“You don’t think I wasn’t trying?” I shot back, tears welling up in my eyes. “You were the first person who had gotten through to me in a long time, you think I didn’t appreciate that? You think I wasn’t fighting with myself not to run away? God, I loved you with every fiber of my being! We hit a bump in the road, it happens! We had plenty of time to grow! I had plenty of time to grow, and you knew that! At least I thought you did…”
Mark was shaking his head, and then he looked down. “If you had said any of this sooner… any kind of inkling that showed you were still in this… things would have been so different. Maybe we would have had our future.”
~
I thought I would have been a crying, panicky mess after that conversation. Instead, I was just… sad. We could have been together for a lot longer than nine months. I wanted that. I was so much happier with him. I had it so good, how could I just let it go?
Maybe I should have tried harder to fight with myself. But I still couldn’t understand why he had wanted to stay with me. Despite how painful it was, it made more logical sense in my head for Mark to leave with someone normal. Just as I had thought, he got tired of me and left.
Here I was now, having an interest in Ethan. Who’s to say that it won’t be the same pattern? I’ll close myself off, he’ll find someone new, and then he’ll forget about me. Having that happen once was enough to fuck me up for life. Just thinking about falling for Ethan only for him to find someone new made me want to be sick. I couldn’t have that happen to me again. Did I have to cut him off now to save us both the headache? How could I trust him?
Once I was home with Jack, I decided against both telling him what happened, and texting Ethan. At this point, though, Jack could tell when something was wrong. Being the friend he is, he asked what was wrong.
“It’s nothing,” I said. “Stupid stuff.”
“If it’s bothering you, it’s not stupid,” Jack told me.
My patience was wearing thin. “Well, I don’t wanna talk about it.”
“Was it Ethan? Did he do something?”
“Can you leave me alone?” I snapped. “I said I don’t wanna talk about it!”
I went to my room, trying not to feel guilty over the stunned look on his face. I just wanted to be alone, since that was how I was going to end up living my life. If I stayed alive that long, at least…
At one point, Ethan texted me. The plan was to ignore every interaction of his, but I grabbed my phone like it was a lifeline as soon as it dinged. It was a tough habit to break.
“Hey, Jack told me you were upset. Everything okay?”
Not what I wanted to talk about. Not what I needed. Not talking to you anymore.
My phone dinged again.
“Did I say something wrong? Did Mark do something? I’m sorry either way.”
I shoved my phone into my nightstand drawer and slammed it shut. I was so overwhelmed, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I sat on the floor and leaned against my bed, running my fingers through my hair. I was in a constant state of tension. Mark pissed me off, made me sad, and reminded me why I wasn’t meant to have anything good. Ethan, on the other hand, was pulling me out of the dark. Or, trying to. But I couldn’t let him. He deserved better than that.
Now he was teaming up with Jack to, what? Keep track of me? Why would they do that? Sure, I tried to commit suicide, but I was fine now! I couldn’t have them worrying about me! They didn’t deserve that, they’re better off without me.
Eventually, I heard a knock on my door. I didn’t answer, but Jack entered somewhat urgently anyway. I heard him sigh when he saw me sat on the floor. No, mijo, I’m not dead. Not physically at least.
“You don’t have to say anything,” he told me as he sat next to me. “I was just told that you weren’t answering your texts. I got a little worried.”
I sighed in return. I wasn’t going to kill myself as long as he was in my life. But I couldn’t tell him about the thoughts circling my head. I couldn’t have him worry about me just before he leaves for the holidays.
“I’m sorry about earlier,” I said quietly. “I didn’t mean to… be like that.”
“It’s okay, I didn’t mean to pry,” he said. “But whatever it was, just know you can talk to me. You can talk to me, Bella. I mean it.”
“I know. Thank you.” I rested my head on his shoulder.
~
As the week progressed, I signed up for spring classes. I had to remind myself of my followers, who were the reason why I decided to go to YouTube University in the first place. They got me to where I was, they helped pull me out of my dark hole at times. I had to remember them. I wasn’t completely alone.
There was still a part of me that felt like I wasn’t going to make it to spring time. But there was another part that had to because I signed up for classes at uni. That was a reason to hold on, right?
If Jack wasn’t leaving to patch things up with Signe, I’d ask him to stay with me. Or maybe, if he wasn’t leaving at all, I wouldn’t be feeling like this. I couldn’t tell if I was growing dependent on him or if I actually wanted his help. Somehow, I managed to keep on a strong face when I dropped him off at the airport that Friday, and even when I felt the crushing solitude.
Last time I sent him home, I didn’t feel as alone. At the time, I had Mark, and while I wasn’t exactly okay, I had a small shred of hope that I would be. I had a sense of determination. I was almost ready to overcome everything. I finally felt like I had a purpose, and he helped me see that purpose.
But now I was wondering why I ever felt like that in the first place. It felt like a myth, like a completely different person living a different life. It was all meant to fall apart at the end, though. Mark said he was going to leave me with or without Amy. He was probably meant to be with her, given how happy they looked, how happy he looked. I couldn’t have prevented that, even if I tried.
I wasn’t really heartbroken anymore. I wasn’t really angry either. Once I was alone in my apartment, it all just slipped away. I felt empty, and it wasn’t necessarily because of the breakup. My mind was too clogged up to pinpoint the reason for this. Usually, I would have Helena help me figure this out, but her office was closed for the holidays. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have the energy to schedule an appointment with her.
By the time I plucked up the courage to talk to Ethan again, he was already leaving for the holidays. He would be in Maine for Christmas, and then return to Los Angeles for New Year’s. I asked him if Mark gave him a hard time after what happened on the field, and he said no. I figured he only said that to get me out of his hair, so I left it at that.
The only thing I could do to distract myself was to make videos. My makeup tutorials around this time of year were mostly dark themed. My “tradition” of coping with not having a Christmas was just to make my makeup as dark as possible. I never called it a “tradition,” though, my followers did, and they looked forward to it. I ranted about bisexual visibility or something and called it a day.
On Christmas Eve, I didn’t get out of bed. My mind was reliving old memories of going to my grandparents’ house and having pozole. We would open presents at midnight. I was a happy child, so I’ve been told. I couldn’t remember that feeling anymore. I couldn’t remember when my parents didn’t hate me. I could barely remember the last Christmas I had.
Every year since I cut off my family, I told myself I would forget about the holidays. But when Christmas was advertised all over the place, it was hard. It was hard to forget the people I grew up with, the people who grew to hate me. I didn’t mean to be a useless pile of crap this year, it just happened on its own.
Feeling useless led to feeling hopeless. Being alone gave my mind plenty of time to wander off and spiral. My hopelessness made that mind-numbing fog intensify so much that the glowing emergency exit sign shone brighter. It was the only thing I could see in this haze. Just like last time…
“I don’t wanna die,” I whispered, my throat sore. It was probably from the dehydration.
I had lost track of the days right after Christmas. All I knew was that it wasn’t the new year just yet. Jack had texted me a few times since he left, which is what made me say those words. I still had him, even if he was far away. That was a reason to stay.
“Can’t die,” I whispered, reaching for my phone. I unlocked it and saw the date.
New Year’s Eve.
Next thing I knew, I was popping a Xanax (or two) and texting Aria, asking about her evening plans. When she told me she was in town and planning to party the night away with Sophie, I rolled myself out of bed. I had to get ready. This was going to be the biggest distraction. Maybe I should have done this last time.
Resilience Chapter 9
Summery: After the Dread Doctors left town, life at Beacon Hills High school had once again found a balance. After the summer, when the seniors graduated and went away to school, and Hayden broke up with him and left town, Liam begins junior year feeling abandoned and alone. However, quickly finding comfort in a very unlikely pack of his own, Liam tries to keep the peace until the return of his alpha. This proves itself to be difficult, as being a beacon to supernatural creatures is what the town does best.
A/N: Hey throwback to that time I wasn’t a piece of shit and actually wrote for this god damn blog? Hello my beautiful 200 followers who haven’t abandoned me yet. I truly hope this is the beginning of me being active again and not being awful. This chapter isn’t overly eventful, but I find it very cute. It gets lit after this I promise. Let me know what you guys think of it! :) More to be posted probably soon!
p.s I edited my theme, let me know what you think :)
PSA: I know that the last time I updated was before season six (oops I’m sorry I’m shit) so in case y’all are new readers this is an AU/my version of season 6, and therefore none of what happened in the most recent season is relevant to this story.
Paring: Liam Dunbar/Reader, Mason/Brett
Come say hi and tell me what you think!
Masterlist
Liam let out a sigh as he ran his hands through his hair before making eye-contact with Elle, who was sitting on the chairs in the lobby of the Animal Clinic. He yawned and took a seat next to her, exhausted from the past hour of helping Deaton attended to the girl’s injuries. Seeing it first hand, as opposed to Brett or Argent explaining to him, made the injuries feel so different in Liam’s head. Something didn’t add up and he needed to figure it out, and soon. However, his brain felt like it was on fire, and he needed to deal with what was happening right now first. “You alright?” He asked Elle, who was staring forward with a blank expression of her face.
“Yeah,” She responded, “just tired is all.”
“Tell me about it.”
“You know, when you told me the stories about your friends and you, dealing with these kind of things it was kind of exciting; like you were all solving a mystery. Its not as exciting anymore.”
Liam frowned, sitting up straight as he placed his hand on her knee. “I know its scary sometimes but— “
“I’m fine. Nothing happened, I shouldn’t be scared and I’m fine.”
Liam raised his eyebrow at her words. She was still facing forward and something about her demeanor seemed off. “A lot has happened in the past few weeks, it’s a lot to digest, trust me I know. It’s alright if you’re not ok— “
“I know.” She interrupted, this time turning to look at him and offering him a smile.
Liam offered a small smile back, and mentally went through the checklist in his head. She didn’t read of anything. Her heat-beat didn’t skip, so he knew that she knew it was in fact ok to not be ok, but that doesn’t equate to her actually being fine: it just means she was careful with her word choice.
This had been a pattern for the past few weeks; something bad happening, or Liam telling her about something bad happening and Elle accepting the information and then brushing it off. She was going to have to deal with her emotions eventually.
Liam squeezed her knee slightly in reassurance. “Alright, but if you ever need to talk— “
This time he was disturbed by the sound of a door shutting. Liam and Elle both flicked their heads to the side to see Deaton exiting from the examination room. He was rubbing at his eyes as he also was awfully exhausted.
“How is she?” Elle asked, her and Liam standing up go greet him.
“Sleeping, finally.” He answered before turning his attention to Liam. “I gave her a sedative, but she might wake up at some point in the night. I’d offer to stay but— “
“No it’s alright,” Liam interjected, knowing what Deaton was getting at, “I can stay tonight.”
“Thank you. I can stick around for the hour though if you need to drive Elle home.”
Liam nodded. “Yeah that’d be great.”
“Home?” Elle piped up. Both boys looked at her in confusion, as she stared back, glancing between the two of them. “I’m not going home.” She argued.
Liam rolled his eyes at her attitude. “Yes you are.”
“No I’m not.” She said firmly.
“Elle it’s three o’clock in the morning, let me drive you home.”
“No, I want to stay.”
“You’re not staying, your mom’s probably already worried.”
“No I called her.”
Deaton and Liam both paused their movements and looked at her with confusion. “What do you mean you called your mom?” Liam asked cautiously.
Elle stayed silent for a moment. “After I threw up.” She said sheepishly.
Liam snorted, mind quickly reminiscing holding Elle’s hair back after Deaton started snapping the girl’s bones back into place. Hopefully she wasn’t like Stiles and would adapt to it eventually.
Deaton blinked at her a few times, still very alarmed. “And what exactly did you tell her?”
Elle crossed her arms and gave the boys a look. “I told her I’m at the Animal Clinic, instead of the hospital, after we found a body in the middle of the road who was basically ripped in two, and I spent the past two hours watching you guys re-assemble her.” She answered sarcastically.
“That’s a tad bit over-dramatic, don’t you think?” Liam rebutted.
Elle rolled her eyes. “No shit, I’m not dumb. I told her Cameron called because she was having boy drama and you dropped me off after the movie, so I asked if I could stay over.”
Liam tilted his head in confusion once more. “Who the hell is Cameron?”
“The friend I made up.”
“You made up a friend?” Deaton questioned.
Elle nodded. “Yeah? I’ve watched enough television to know that we’d be going gallivanting and would be out all night so I needed a ruse.” She said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Both the boys once more stopped and stared at her for a few moments, digesting what she just said. Elle stared back, raising her eyebrows at him; as if she was challenging him to fight with her.
“At lest she’s punctual.” Deaton said, breaking the silence.
Liam shook his head. “That’s not the point, Elle I’m driving you home.”
“But I’m at Cameron’s house. What am I supposed to say? I solved her issues and she sent me home at three am?”
“Deaton, tell her she needs to go home.”
Deaton rolled his eyes as the two teenagers bickering in his Lobby. He thought it was going to be an extremely quite night before Elle and Liam showed up at his door and ambushed him with a body. After Scott left for school, Deaton was optimistic that maybe the teen-aged shenanigans would leave too. However, ever since Liam started working at the clinic (he had a fantastic reference from a previous employee), it was almost as if the chaos never left. Deaton was beginning to miss Scott. “I’m not getting in the middle of you two.”
“Deaton— “Liam protested.
Deaton ran his hand stressfully over his face. “You’re the one that told her she was involved; you don’t get to choose when that fact is or isn’t relevant based on whether it’s an inconvenience for you. Besides, with all the Mountain ash in this place, its always good to have a human around. Scott always had Stiles.” With that, he grabbed his coat and left, leaving the two teenagers to look after the girl.
“What’s mountain ash?” Elle asked.
Liam face-palmed, there was still so much ground to cover.
----------
Elle sat back down in the lobby of the animal clinic. Liam had gone around and double checked to make sure all the windows were secure, and the front door locked. He looked around the room, seeing if there was anything to give them a better sleep. He returned with a blanket. “This is all I could find.” He said, taking a seat next to Elle, between her and the wall. “And you could go steal a dog and cuddle with it I suppose.”
Elle chucked, nudging Liam’s shoulder. “Why would I steal a dog, when I’ve got you? You’re basically a dog, right?” She teased.
Liam rolled his eyes. “Those jokes stopped being funny the second you started making them.”
“No, they’re still funny.” She responded, laughing.
“Are you saying you want to cuddle, Elle?” Liam joked, turning his head to look at her.
Elle shrugged, looking forward for a moment and then turning to look at him. “I mean; you are the closest thing I have to a pillow.” She joked.
Liam cracked a smile. Elle turned so her back was facing Liam, and directed him so she was tucked into his side, his arm draped over her so her head resting against his shoulder and then kicked her feet up. Liam shifted so he was leaning against the corner and then moved his head so it gently rested on hers.
Liam closed his eyes for a moment and enjoyed the silence, before speaking again. “Hey Elle? About earlier— “
“Can we talk about it later? I’m really tired.”
Her heartbeat may not have jumped, and there may have been no chemo-signals, but Liam knew her well enough to know that something was wrong.
“Yeah of course.” He said instead. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
Liam tightened his grip on her slightly, and closed his eyes again. He tried to listen to her heartbeat until she fell asleep, but exhaustion hit him, and he was out before he knew it.
----------
Liam first awoke to chaos.
Hearing the commotion in the examination room, he quickly became very aware to his surroundings. “Stay here.” He said to Elle, who he had shook aware when he stood up.
Liam opened the door to see the girl in complete hysterics. If her physical actions weren’t enough for him to pick up on, the chemo-signals sure were. It reeked of anxiety, distress, and fear. She was pulling at her restraints, screaming in pain. Liam assumed that it was possible she didn’t know she escaped and was safe, and the need to leave wherever she was outweighed the overwhelming pain she was in.
He leaped into action and grabbed the syringe of the sedative that Deaton laid out of the table. However, before he was able to inject her, she had managed to free her left hand, and slapped it out of Liam’s hand.
“Shit” he cursed under his breath.
Distracted, the girl used to opportunity to slap him across the face with her claws, causing him to groan. Instinctively, he grabbed her arm and twisted it, causing her to scream once more.
Stop Liam, you’re hurting her.
Don’t fight her, restrain her.
Liam let go of her wrist, then grabbed her forearm, holding it against her chest and placed his other hand on her shoulder trying to pin her down. She fought against his grip the whole time, screaming at him before letting out a roar.
Ok she’s definitely a werewolf.
“Hey!” He yelled, trying to talk over her, and the loudness of her movements. “Hey, hey, hey.” He coed, but it wasn’t getting her attention. “I’m not going to hurt you. You’re safe now. I found you on the road after you escaped, you woke up in the back of my car, remember?” He yelled again.
He watched her face flush with emotion, and her eyes turn back from yellow to brown. She relaxed slightly, but the sheer terror on her face was very prominent. “I’m Liam,” he continued, “Liam Dunbar. I’m not going to hurt you.” He repeated. He could feel her calm down a bit more, but to emphasize his point, he let go of her shoulder, and grabbed her free hand in both of his, squeezing till his veins turned black. He could hear her sigh in relief. “See?” He inquired, “you’re safe here. My boss, who stitched you up, said you have some very serious injuries, and are going to need to sleep for a few days so you can heal, alright?” Liam explained calmly.
The girl nodded at his words, before glancing down at her injuries, and the stitches and gauze on her body. She winced at her appearance before looking around the room. “Where am I?” She asked softly.
“The Beacon Hills Animal Clinic.”
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “Where the hell is Beacon Hills?”
Liam shot her a look. Geography is by far his worst subject but even he knows the surrounding towns in the county. Where is she from?
Liam shook off the thought. “What’s your name?”
Her head shot up to look at Liam, and her eyes went wide. “I-I don’t, I can’t— “
“Shhhh,” Liam cooed, placing his hand on the side of her head to maintain eye-contact. “It’s fine; my boss says that along with your body, your mind has also been through a trauma and you need to let it heal. Go to sleep.”
She shook her head quickly. Liam could sense her anxiety levels rising again. “I can’t they’re gonna find me, I need to leave—they’re going to come back— “
“Hey, hey, hey,” Liam started again, using his other hand to help hold her head, and his elbow to pin down her shoulder. “look at me, I need you to take a deep breath for me, can you do that? Take a deep breath.” He said slowly. Liam then took a deep breath, and continued to do that until she mimicked him. “Smell that?” He asked. “It’s Mountain ash; no one is coming in without an invitation, you’re safe. I promise.”
“You promise?” She asked quietly.
Liam scanned her face, trying to read her features. All of her anxiety was clouding any other chemo signals, and he couldn’t even imagine the pain she was currently enduring; especially after fighting her restrains—which clearly weren’t doing a good job. But what really killed him was her eyes, they looked, empty. “What the hell happened to you?”
Liam watched as it looked as if every memory of what she went through hit her at once. She shook her head quickly, tears quickly falling from her face. “I didn’t mean to hurt them, they made me do it—I’m so sorry.” She yelled, before her crying made her words inaudible.
Liam panicked slightly-- he didn’t mean to traumatize her further. He tried to comfort her again with words but at this point she was too far gone. He held her down, trying to think of a plan to get the syringe before a noise from the door caught his attention.
He looked up to see Elle emerge from the doorway – who had probably been standing there the whole time—and picked up the sedative.
Liam shifted so his arms were around the girl, and she cried into him, but this way he could hold her arm steady for Elle. Liam held her, and whispered that she was safe into her ear, until he felt her pass out.
Untangling himself, Liam lied the girl back down into a comfortable position before moving around the table to Elle’s side and re-securing the restraint. Elle grabbed the blanket that she had knocked on the floor in her attempt to escape and placed it over her once more.
Liam placed his arm around Elle’s shoulders, pulling her into his side. All of a sudden he was very thankful that they had replaced one of the metal tables in the clinic with a hospital bed, but equally saddened by the fact they had to use it. He wasn’t sure what exactly was going on, but he was going to do everything in his power to made sure that it didn’t happen again.
“Hey Elle?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m really glad you’re here.”
Chapter 38: Plastic Taste by Joji
It’s February and you know what that means! Ita turns 23 and it’s the 7th year anniversary of when Tenya first met Ita. And the first Valentines Day as a couple... Ita isn’t freaking out, but Tenya is.
“Have you figured out where to go on her birthday?” asked Tensei to his very distraught brother “it’s the 2nd.”
“I have a plan and I’m not sure if I’ll succeed” Tenya chopped stressfully “I’m going to do the memory lane trip on her birthday and instead of cake, I make the cookies she made for the class when we met. But”
“But what?” Tensei raised an eyebrow.
“I don’t bake so I’m not sure if I’ll do a great job at making them AND for the 14th, I made that reservation for the dumpling house she’s had her eye on since it opened” Tenya rubbed his temples “but I don’t have a plan for that, no present, no back up plan, nothing! Just the dumpling house after work and go home to see what happens.”
“So this isn’t proposal time?” Tensei asked innocently “I really thought this was the time, I was going to get a suit custom made for the occasion.”
“Why is everyone telling me to marry her, it’s too soon!” Tenya groaned “being her boyfriend was already a stretch when I asked.”
The days pass and it’s her birthday! She woke up a little hungover from the night before having her usual day-before-actual-day celebrating with Mimi, Jin and others in her friend group.
“Wake up, it’s your birthday Mom!” blared Muffin 2.0 “you’re 23 years old now and in great health. Tenya has a message for you.”
“He couldn’t just-” I turned to see that I wasn’t in my bed, I teleported myself into my day-bed in the office, fully in my party outfit and make up “alright, off to an awesome start to 23 Ita! Trashed in the wrong bed and Tenya is probably going to chop lecture me later.” I sigh as the robo hands me a hand written note.
Beloved,
Get washed and ready for a walk where we first held hands and our love story began. I’ll be waiting for you down stairs.
-Tenya
I quickly get ready for whatever his note meant, it was exciting to do something that isn’t cake related.
“Ready love?” Tenya asked as he heard me teleport down stairs “you look so lovely! I did say pink is your color” he hugged her tight “Happy birthday.”
“Thanks!” I got giddy “where are we going?!”
“You’ll see, lets go in my car”
We get in the car and drive all the way to the downtown area near UA. I gasp as I recognized where we were.
“Oh shit it’s the old stomping grounds!” I exclaimed “I haven’t been here in years!”
“I thought a little day trip here might be suiting, it is where I first met you” he said as he parked “I guess it’s also our first meeting anniversary, it’s a very important day for us.” He opens the door for her “remember when I first held your hand?”
“Of course, I couldn’t catch up when we went to the cafe” I get those warm fuzzies of that day “I didn’t think much of it because back home my friends would do the same” I start giggling “but then I felt the sweat on your hand and figured it was probably the first time you held hands with somebody.”
“Oh that’s embarrassing” he turned red as they walked hand in hand down the same street they took that day “I thought it wasn’t noticeable” he tightened his grip slightly “can you believe that day I set out with the idea that I was going to confess to you to dismiss my crush on you if you didn’t feel the same.”
“Were you hoping I’d say no?”
“I hoped you’d give me a chance because I was still sorting out my feelings about you” he sighed at the thought “I really didn’t know if it was just a phase or if I was just attached to you because you were new and alone and needed someone to protect you.”
“Well your meddling in that 1st term didn’t help me either” I huffed “my poor little heart caught feelings and it wasn’t fair!”
“Why? I was trying to help you.”
“I know but I tend to love too easily when I was younger” I turned red “I was crushing on you but absolutely refused to say anything about it. Because I didn’t want you to stop what you were doing” I turned to make eye contact “I wanted so badly for you to say that you had feelings for me because I felt all those looks, alone time, hand holding, hugs, hand kisses and promises had to mean something if you only do them with me.”
“They did, it meant I was a coward with a big dumb crush on you and hoped maybe if I hug you a little longer or hold your hand enough times, I’d get the courage to kiss you” he stopped “oh look we’re at our first stop.”
“Huh? OH ITS THE CAFE?!” I was stunned “where we had our first ‘date’?”
“Heh, yeah” he didn’t want to admit that he also called it that “and to this day, I still don’t like coffee.” They get seated in the semi busy cafe and order, he looks at her gandering at the unchanged environment “I think I get it now.”
“Hm? Get what now?” I was pulled back into conversation.
“That love isn’t about just liking the person and spending time with them” he held his hand out for hers “it’s being vulnerable and trusting that person, it’s helping them through rough times, it’s communicating freely and it’s thinking about them when you’re apart.” he smiled when she put her hand in his “that was the missing piece in my understanding on how I should go about expressing my feelings to you. But you’ve shown me love this whole time, thank you for being so patient with me.”
“Wow, it took you 7 years to figure it out huh?” the order came as she said that “I really thought the slow dance kiss was going to do it” she stopped to take a sip of her drink “but instead I wrote you off as on the homosexual scale.”
“Wait, what” he had to pause to process what she said “you thought I was homosexual for a while?!”
“Yeah, I didn’t have another reason on why you acted the way you did” I explained “plus with all that time you spent with Midoriya I thought you had a crush on him.”
He laughed “I see how you’d think that but I was just too nervous to connect the kiss” he sipped his drink “and I really wish I remembered that after party.”
“Oh you kept saying you love me, cried, tried to kiss me, threw up, cried again.”
“I did all that?”
“Yeah but as much as I wanted to kiss you and believe you loved me, I knew it was wrong for me to kiss you when you were drunk” I sighed “every time you got drunk, you’d tell me the same thing and try to kiss me but I wished you’d say it when we were sober.”
“I guess you did the right thing” he remembered the day she left on mission “remember that kiss you gave me before you left for a mission in 2nd year?”
“Yeah?”
“If you had feelings for me, why didn’t you confess that day?”
“I wanted a reason to win and come back, I didn’t want my last memory of you to be a confession” tears welled in my eyes “I kissed you on the cheek to give you a pleasant memory of me in case I didn’t come back, the idea terrified me but I wanted to come back to have a chance at having this.”
“Even if it took us this long, I’m so happy you’ve conquered your fears because of the love you had for me” he comforted her “you inspire me to do the same.”
“Ay pues I’m gonna cry Tenya” I yelp as I try not to cry “it’s always when we’re in public too!”
We stay a while longer and while Tenya insisted on paying, I pulled a pro-gamer move and payed for everyone else’s tabs. I do things to spite others, not to make myself a better person necessarily. The rest of the day was spent around that area, in the shops, remembering certain things, getting recognized and passing by the school gates. It was late in the afternoon when we headed home, Tenya had one last surprise.
“Okay sit here and close your eyes” Tenya instructed her to sit at the table “no peeking!”
“Alright! I’ll keep them shut” the sound of his speedy feet made me laugh “I swear if it’s cake, I’m going to McFreakin lose it.”
“I don’t know what that is but you won’t be doing it today” he said as he was scrambling to set up his surprise “okay, open them.”
I open my eyes and it was a colorful napkin with a homemade cookie on top of it “You didn’t! Tenya~” I started to breakdown “it’s just like the one I gave to the class! Napkin and everything!”
“Today is very special to me and since it’s the first one as a couple” he sat in the chair next to me “I thought recreating the cookies would be fitting, because if you didn’t pass them out, I wouldn’t have had an excuse to talk to you that day” he wiped her tears “the day I met my soulmate.”
“You also made me cry that day” I laughed “but these are happy tears” I kissed him “thank you love, let see if you nailed the taste too” I split it in half and it was mushy-soft and the texture was a little moister than what a cookie should be “texture is...something BUT the flavor isn’t bad! It’s pretty close actually.”
“I remembered it was a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie with some spice, so I followed a basic recipe for chocolate chip cookies and added cooked oatmeal and cinnamon” he felt proud of himself as he explained “I feel like I did a pretty good job for my first time baking.”
“WAIT HOL UP BABE” the jazz music in my head stopped “did you say you added COOKED oatmeal to this?” I watch him nod his head confidently and almost didn’t have the heart to roast his ass, but I did, gently “that would explain the mushy texture, you don’t cook the oatmeal before adding it to baked goods.”
I can’t describe the face journey he went through when I broke the news, other than beet red embarrassment “I was so sure that’s what you do! Then how do you make yours?”
“I do the basic chocolate chip recipe, then add a packet of those instant oatmeal breakfasts that had cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar” I sniffed the other half of the cookie “then chill the dough for 20 mins in the freezer before baking them to insure even baking” I catch him make his iconic thinking face “BUT you did get one ingredient right.”
“The chocolate chips?”
“What, yeah, but I mean the other key ingredient” I giggled at his answer “you made this with just as much love as I make them.”
“That I did” he smiles and takes a bite of the half I left on the napkin “oh wow that’s mushy, how are you stomaching this?”
“You made it, I want to eat what my man cooks me!”
“Even if it’s 20+ more of these mushy cookies that I put in a Tupperware that smells like salsa?”
I felt my soul temporarily leave my body at that sentence “You did what now?” he shows me his shame in a salsa scented Tupperware “I’ll eat these if you help me eat them.”
“That’s a fair compromise.”
“AN IDEA! Lets watch something on the couch in sweatpants!” before he had a say, I teleported to the room to quickly change into my sweat pants and black band tee and teleport back “I’m ready!”
“I will never figure out how you get undressed and dressed in under 5 seconds” he sighed lovingly “I’ll go change into mine while you choose something.”
When he comes back, I had a show picked out but I was a bit hesitant to suggest it because Shinso never wanted to watch it with me because it’s an American cartoon.
“Okay so how do you feel about watching Steven Universe with me?”
“What’s the show about?” He asked curiously as he looked at the season 1 poster of the show on the screen “I’ve never heard of it.”
I explain the gist of the show “...I’ve seen all 4 seasons but they’re coming out with a movie this year and I want to re-watch the show to get me by before the Japan release.”
“I’d like to watch this if you say it’s a good show.”
I was surprised he willingly wanted to watch it with me. We get through the whole 1st season, then I pause and turn to him “Okay, who’s your favorite character?!”
“I relate with Garnet but I really like Pearl and her dynamic with Steven” he gets into it “also the themes are really good! And the music is amazing.”
“UGH YOU HAVE NO IDEA! Amethyst is my sprit gem and I love Be Wherever You Are so much that I learned it on the Ukulele” I try to tone myself down a bit “it gets much more heavy in season 3.”
“We should watch this when we have our days off together” he looks at me “is it weird that I’ve never watched cartoons as a child? But I look at you enjoy them and I feel like a missed out on a big part of growing up.”
“We should have this as our binge show” I check the time, it’s almost 9pm “wanna take this upstairs?”
“It’s a bit late and don’t you have-” he started to say that we should be going to bed but stops and feels me run my hand over the outline of his crotch “Oh you mean that, then yes please.”
It was definitely one of the better birthdays in the books, the only thing that went wrong were the cookies. The days following were busy and bustling with high stress situations in their work-places that Valentines day seemed like a much needed wind-down.
“Okay I trust everything will run smoothly when I head out” I say before I leave early for the day, per Jin and Mimi’s orders “do I need to re-”
“LEAVE!” Jin huffed as he pushed her toward the door out of her office “you got your purse, coat and the quarterly reports. Go home before I floor portal you home!”
“Please for the love of God stop thinking about work baby girl” Mimi pleaded “you’re getting headaches and you know what happens when you push it! Plus you need to get ready for your date, who knows, maybe tonight is the night~”
“Okay, okay! I’ll leave” I gave in and headed out “see y’all later.” I make the drive home and the sky looked cloudier than the morning. I get home and text Tenya that I got home.
“Welcome home Mom!” yipped Muffin 2.0 “reminder of your event later tonight, it’s 3 hours before start time.”
“Thank you Muffin” I booped the robo’s nose “can you please tell me tonight’s forecast?”
“It’s cloudy with a high of 78 and a low of 69, chance of rain is at 40%.”
“Hehehe, low 69″ I giggle to myself “guess I should wear the faux mink coat in that case.” I take my time to get ready, Tenya gets home and does the same.
“I hope you worked up an appetite because we’re going to dinner at someplace a little birdie told me you’ve had your eye on for months.” Tenya teased as he drove us to dinner.
“Tokoyami is a narc as bitch” I harshly said “can’t keep anything to himself!”
“What? No silly! I asked Muffin 2.0 what was on your pinned list and they said this dumpling house in little China town has been on your list for a while.”
My face lit up “NO WAY! You got a reservation?!”
“Yup, I wanted to make sure today was perfect” he pulled into valet parking “it’s just going to be me and you, celebrating our love.” We get to the place half an hour before our reservation but ran into a problem.
“I do apologize sir but we can’t give you the promised reservation” nervously peeped the front door man.
“Why not? We’re early to our reservation.” Tenya checked his watch as he said that to make sure they were early.
“I understand that but we had 2 private parties last minute rent out our reservations side” the front man deeply bowed “they claim to want the privacy, we can fit you in another night-”
“I don’t want another night, I wanted tonight” Tenya was losing his temper a bit.
“It’s okay Tenya” I softly said to de-escalate the situation “we can just go somewhere else.”
“No I’ll take care of this, here I’ll hold your coat” he turned to get my coat and turned back to argue with the front man “I’d like to talk to your manager.”
I knew that if I spoke up and did the whole ‘do you know who I am?!’ gig, the media will take hold of it and make me look like the bad guy. I didn’t want to listen to the pointless arguing and I looked out the window of the place, across the street was a street vendor that was selling steamed buns and other steamed food. My stomach was lurching for any type of food and I knew that we just weren’t going to get seated tonight.
“Hey I’m going for a little walk outside.”
“Okay don’t go too far.”
I teleport across the street and walk up to the vendor’s cart “Hi, couldn’t help and see that you’re selling steamed buns!”
The vendor looked at me and started to get nervous “Yes I am! I have pork with salted duck egg, shredded bbq pork and seafood” they were fidgeting with their tongs “what can I get you?”
“Can I have the seafood one? I’ve never had a seafood steamed bun.”
“Here, on the house” they handed me the bun in a wax paper sleeve “may I say, you’re quite gorgeous. Where did you get that decorative hair comb?”
“Oh thank you! You’re so kind and I got this hair comb when I was visiting a friend in Shibuya a few months ago” I took a bite of the steamed bun and loved the taste.
“It’s a beautiful piece! It’s something my wife would like” they sighed “we just had a baby and our anniversary is coming up but we have neither the time nor money to do anything nice. Everything is for our baby.”
That stirred me the right way because I was about to make this person’s whole career with this pro-gamer move “Hmm, this is quite the bun, how much is it for a bun?”
“I can’t take money from a pretty lady, but they’re 400 yen each” they gestured to their other items “sesame balls are 3 for 200 yen and strawberry dango are 250 yen.”
“Oh in that case” I open my clutch “I’d like to buy your entire stock please.”
“Okay I’ll- wait, excuse me!” they were in disbelief “why? I said I wo-”
“I know, but it’s getting late and you should be getting home to your wife and child” I smiled warmly “I know I’d want my partner to be home with me on Valentines day and you seem like you want to be home with them.”
They teared up “Right away Miss!” they got the biggest bags they had on them to fill them up with buns and the other stuff. “That’ll be...31,000 yen” they cringed a little when they said that.
“Here, keep the change” I hand them a 100,000 yen bill.
“Oh, I’m so-” they started to cry “thank you kind lady! Your heart is pure and your beauty radiates from the the inside out.”
“Oh before I go” I take the hair comb out of my hair, causing all of my hair to fall and drape over my shoulders “here, your wife might appreciate this more than I do” I pick up the 4 bags of food “bye bye! Have a safe trip home and happy Valentines Day!”
“Good Bye kind stranger! I will!”
I teleport back across the street and see Tenya still arguing with the manager but now more people that had reservations joined the back and forth. I felt the first sprinkling of rain on my shoulder, and with my coat still in Tenya’s hand, I had to find another way to stay dry. I remembered there’s a corner store just down the street, maybe I’ll get lucky and find an umbrella. I teleport there and just my luck, theres a robbery in progress.
“You came in at the wrong time Miss!” growled the robber as he cocked his gun at the cashier “move and the cashier gets it!”
“Okay” I said as I smiled innocently. I used my telekinesis to empty his gun cartridge and pry the gun out of his hand. “Oh dang who’s doing that?!”
“Some weird shit is going on here!” the robber yelped as I pistol whipped him “Fuck this! I don’t want to know who’s doing this!” he ran out and I dropped the gun.
“Oh wow, you okay?” I asked the cashier.
“I’m fine just- HOLY SHIT YOU’RE THAT CEO!” he was starstruck as he shakily pointed to a magazine rack behind me “I’m a HUGE fan of your business model! I didn’t go to school to study business or anything but you care for the well-being of the displaced in the hero world.”
I look at what he was pointing and it was the cover of Business Insider Japan I did back in October “Oh dang, I remember that photoshoot and interview” I turn to the cashier “well it’s never too late to go to college and study if you have an interest in business.”
“I don’t have the money to go to a big fancy school like you did.”
“I went to Waseda Uni after a short break to work after high school” I smiled warmly as their self-doubt reminded me of myself “nothing fancy but lots of hard work and dedication to achieve my goal to start a security companion company. Though I got lucky in the industry, learning about the ins and outs was eye opening in college. So I say, give it a go and feed your curiosity!”
“I think I will now” they smiled “Oh! what can I help you with?”
“Right! Um do you have any umbrellas? I’ve been caught without one”
“Yes we do! And if I may interest you” they pull out a can from a display fridge behind them “we’re promoting this canned Ingenium endorsed orange juice.”
I start laughing “Oh fuck it’s real?!” I picked up the can to see the iconic chop stance in the hero uniform “I’ll take 12! I HAVE to roast him on this later.”
“So it’s true that you and him are dating? None of the news and gossip columns can conclude if that’s true or not.”
“It’s true, we were best friends in high school” I tapped on the can “that bitch drinks these things like it was his fuel! I didn’t get into it like him but I’d drink the ones he got me because I had a big dumb crush on him and I wanted him to like me.”
“That’s the cutest shit I’ve ever heard” he fawned over my little story as he bagged the cans “your total is 1,055 yen.”
I paid for my items and teleported back to the restaurant just in time to see Tenya walking out frustrated. I open the umbrella and walked up to him.
“I’m sorry baby, I couldn’t get a table for us” he sighed in defeat “and all the other places are packed. I didn’t want this to happen and I don’t have a back up plan” he looked into my eyes “would you hate me if we just go home? I know you’re hungry.”
“I’m fine with that” I hold up my bags “I bought food! So we don’t have to cook or go anywhere else!” I got a slight shiver “can you put my coat on me? I’m cold.”
“Yes! Let me hold those bags” We head home and he opened the bags “that’s a lot of meat buns.”
“Yeah but I was planning to warp some to Mimi and Jin” I check the time, it’s almost 8pm “they should be home now.” I separate the food evenly so we’d have enough for us and a bagful of food for the other 2.
Tenya loosens up his tie as he slumps in defeat on the couch to eat “Sorry I ruined your night” he put his hand on her face to cradle it “I wanted everything to be perfect for our 1st valentines day as a couple.”
“What else did you have planned?” I asked curiously, resting my face in his hand.
“To be honest, just the restaurant and maybe a long drive somewhere” he sighed and lovingly looked into her eyes “I know you always say to have a back up plan but I was just hoping everything worked out.”
“Oh it was none of our faults” I smiled “today was just weird.”
“But I wanted to do something that you deserved!” he protested “you deserve everything you desire and more, if I could, I’d give you the world and explore it with you.”
“That’s sweet of you but” I put my hand on his head “I don’t want the world, I don’t care for fancy dinners or lavish gifts. I want to matter to somebody and have the simple things in life, the things money can’t buy.” I push his hair back “we could have one dollar to our name and I’d still love you because you make me feel like I matter with every hand hold, every look and every attempt to understand me and my strange habits” I levitate his glasses off “the way you hold me as I drift to sleep, the butterflies I get every time you bring me close for a kiss, the tender touches when we make love” I lean in closer, softening my voice as I get closer “the way you’re considerate of me, the time you set aside for me when it’s been a long day and best of all, when you want to do the things I want to do because they genuinely interest you.”
With her basically on top of him, Tenya brings her in closer “Darling, if I’d known that’s all it took, I would’ve done things differently” he sighed as she put her arms around his neck “but I’m still learning to be a good partner to you, I feel like I have a long way to go and I’m going to be the best one.”
“I hope so” we connect for a kiss “hehe you taste like duck egg.”
“You taste like orange juice.”
We laugh and just spend our evening on the couch. Thoughts of the future popped in my head, thoughts I buried away because of the pain I went through but I wanted answered.
“Be honest with me” I say as I look out the window facing the backyard, watching the rain pour down “do you want to have children with me?”
“I do, I’ve been thinking about starting a family with you since we were in high school.”
“That’s fucking weird” I laughed and looked at him “why though?”
“I want the family you were raised in, one where you see your parents be loving to each other after so long and have the skills that’ll encourage you to do anything you want to” he smiled “I want to have a big family, celebrate birthdays, have family dinners, see them off to school, see them grow up to be a better person than me and full of love.” He paused a moment to think a little realistically “I know you lost one and nothing felt right after, but I’m going to do everything in my power to ensure that doesn’t happen again.”
“I didn’t know you put so much thought into it” it warmed my heart that he wanted to be part of my family “I’d like that, imagine the quirks they’d get?”
“They’d get double quirks for sure! I’m not sure what other quirks run in my family since everyone seems to have just engine of some sort” he started to fantasize all the possibilities “if your quirks makes you nearly invincible, and mine make me fast... does that mean one of our children will become the ultimate powerhouse of fast and invincible?”
“Who’s to stay it’s not all of them?” I get into the fantasy “but I’d love for the elemental quirks to show up or get telepathic quirks. I always thought those quirks were so cool growing up!”
Good conversation ended our night as the rain poured outside. Talking about the future that we’ll build together made me excited to start a family again. While the scar of past will never go away, his love certainly eases the pain. What will happen next in our story? I don’t know BUT now I feel as though I can overcome anything with him by my side.
