Crutchie: I made it myself
Race: Homemade! So adorable
Race: *To other Newsies* That is the ugliest effing strike sign I’ve ever seen

I’m so glad that we’ve mostly gotten away from making crutchie the “small innocent too-pure-for-this-world” newsie. While he is loyal to the end, I like to think that he has a sort of mean sense of humor and swears and trips people with his crutch just cause he can. But when it really comes down to it he will be there for the other newsies and will stay up all night just listening to them talk, etc. but he’s not this small innocent guy. None of them are. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

The bit about Letter From The Refuge that fucks me up the most is that Crutchie, who previously teased Jack about his dreams of Santa Fe and only ever entertained it as a fun idea, clearly content with staying in New York for the time being..
..after a single day in the Refuge, is ready to Get The Fuck Out. He gets what the Santa Fe Dream is about all of a sudden. It's not just about going somewhere nice, it's about being away from the bad place.

Small extract of a post refuge one shot I'm working on. Will Post it all when finished.
...
Now fully awake, Crutchie knew sleep would elude him for the rest of the long summer night, that he would once again have to make up some excuse for lagging behind the other fellas when the morning bell was struck.
It was a deception he had been working on ever since he had been released from the Refuge.
Sure, Jack and the others had all asked, tried to check in with him about whatever occurred to him during his time in Snider's grasp yet his continued denyals of any lasting effect had eventually forced them to consider that perhaps that was indeed the truth.
All except Jack.
Jack bore his own scars from his many stays at that God awful place, and Crutchie knew his brother suspected he wasn't being told the whole truth. Jack would give him these odd looks as if he were about to say something but always stopped short.
In his own way, that meant so much more than continuous asking in Crutchie's opinion, it showed his brother valued his independence and respected that he was capable and wasn't something to be pitied.
But on nights like tonight he wished he was really as capable as Jack.
Sure, he'd witnessed the famous Jack Kelly after his first refuge stay while the other boys only found out a few days later, had seen for himself his brother's beaten form, tended to the whip slashes upon his back and held him as he sobbed through the pain and fear, yet Jack had been locked up for months not mere days.
In comparison Crutchie was pathetic.
"Crutchie?"
Cursing, the younger boy shifted, attempting to mask his features as Jack stirred.
"Crutchie, you awake?" Jack's arm slapped the empty spot on the ground beside him, obviously sensing the absence of his brother.
"Yeah?" He didn't mean to make it sound like a question. Damn, that was bound to raise suspicion.

Matthew Duckett's Crutchie is older than Jack by like. Three days. & his favorite thing is being so insufferable about that. In my heart

I looked up the lyrics to ‘Letter From the Refuge’ from Newsies, and on the website, they had an ad titled ‘Am I Gay Quiz’
I’m not sure how to feel

I’m so stressed because I can’t sing A Letter From The Refuge in the key Andrew sings it in and if I do sing it in the key I’m comfortable with, my director might not cast me because he won’t want to spend money finding a score for our pit to use!!! I’m literally losing my mind over this and it’s making me cry because I don’t think I’ll ever get the chance to play Crutchie.

Alberts reaction to Crutchie being beaten and taken to the refuge
at first, al didn’t know that crutchie was taken. he got away before he saw it happen. he was so scared and upset and in shock that the only thing he could do was sit in silence. he was back at the lodging house with everyone else and he felt so awful for not being able to help more, because the older newsies were going around helping the younger newsies who were really having a hard time. he was sitting on his bed barely breathing and full on freaking out. maybe it reminded him of his home, maybe he was just scared, maybe he felt so awful about how useless he was being.
after a little while race came over to him. tears had hollowed out his face. he needed someone who didn’t ask him how he was doing, he needed someone who he didn’t need to support when he could barely support himself.
they sat in silence together, but it made them both feel better. it didn’t take away what had happened, but it was giving them the feeling of safety just being around each other. al was breathing and race looked more alive.
then, race quietly says, “we’ll get him back”
at first, al doesn’t register that race said anything. he has to realize that something was said and he has to play it back in his memory to hear what was spoken.
his voice is hoarse, barely audible, “what’re ya talking about?”
race’s eyes widen, he realizes no one told al what had happened.
“al, they took him. they took crutchie”
al doesn’t even know how to react. he was barely listening. he hears sounds that were spoken but he can’t make words out of them. he stared into space and puts the voice on loop, trying to make sense of what it was saying. race pulls him into a hug. was it to comfort himself, or al? who knows.
it clicks. al pushes race away. so many thoughts are racing through his head he has no idea what they’re saying. he saw the hurt look on race’s face and he wanted to say he was sorry, but he couldn’t. he needed to get out. he tore through the lodging house looking for crutchie. some of the other newsies asked him if he was ok. he didn’t respond. his mind was so loud he couldn’t hear anything else. he was deathly quiet, the look on his face was terrifying. throughout the entire house, no crutchie. he had saved his final hope for the last place to look. jack’s penthouse. he was desperate. if crutchie wasn’t there he had no idea what to do next. he climbed up the ladder, but he had no idea how fast to go. before he reached the top, he stopped. he knew if crutchie wasn’t up there then what race had said would be true. he finally pushed through to the top rung and looked around.
he wasn’t there.
al pulls himself into the penthouse. he sits in the corner and he’s deathly quiet. his mind is clear, practically nothing inside. he sits, curled up, with his eyes closed. his breathing is sporadic. then he hears something on the ladder and the noise comes back. his heart pounds and his mind is racing again. he doesn’t go look. he can’t bring himself to do it. he hears someone come over to him and sit beside him. his eyes are still closed.
he knows it’s not crutchie. he doesn’t walk that smoothly. he knows it’s race.
he wants to say something but he has no idea what to possibly say. he just sits there in silence, eyes still closed, alongside his best friend.
once he finally opens his eyes, what he already knew was confirmed. it wasn’t crutchie, it was race.
he was sitting there in silence with tears still streaming down his cheeks. he was staring off into space, straight ahead.
al had no idea how much time had passed, but he knew race needed someone. he knew he needed to be that someone. he put his arm around race and he quietly swore,
“we’ll get him back, racer, i know it”
