Sons of the Forest: dare to survive

Sons of the Forest is a survival horror video game developed by Endnight Games and published by Newnight. Released in early access on February 23, 2023 and fully on February 22, 2024 for Microsoft Windows, it serves as the sequel to the 2014 game The Forest.

The story follows a protagonist sent to a mysterious island to search for a missing billionaire CEO and his family, while facing cannibalistic mutants and uncovering an ancient secret buried underground[. Gameplay involves crafting weapons, building shelters, and struggling to survive alone or with up to eight players in cooperative multiplayer.

Gameplay Mechanics

Similarly to The Forest, players control a protagonist stranded on an island inhabited by cannibals. New mechanics include 3D printing, friendly AI companions like the deaf Kelvin who can be given written commands, and the three-limbed Virginia who can be equipped with weapons. The map is four times larger than the previous game.

Intelligent enemy AI is a major focus, with cannibals prioritizing self-preservation, climbing trees, setting ambushes, and using more advanced combat tactics in groups. Defensive walls and traps are now more necessary for a successful base.

Story and Setting

The story expands on the supernatural elements from The Forest, with more voice acting, documents, boss fights, and a massive new story cave with a major reveal. The ending has been fleshed out, with a new cutscene rewarding keeping allies alive.

The island setting is praised for its beauty, with glistening pools, windy treetops, and winding trails. Abandoned campsites, bloodied vehicles, and secret bunkers provide environmental storytelling.

Reception

Sons of the Forest received critical acclaim, with IGN awarding it a 9/10 and praising the improved AI, larger map, and graphics. It surpassed Starfield as the most wishlisted game on Steam and sold over 2 million copies in 24 hours, becoming the best-selling game at the time.

Reviewers noted the game's intense moments of "sublime paranoia" and "exquisite tension" in the underground caves, as well as the delight of interacting with the intelligent cannibals. However, some criticized the progression blockers that require fetching specific items to access new areas.
