That season takes such a great look at Tommy’s mental health, and how his traumas and constant stress and brain injury have affected him.

to see him struggling with being by himself without any business to focus on was incredible. he’s such a fascinating character

How many people get firsts or 2.1s in subjects like HSPS and PBS?

In HSPS, getting below a 2.i isn’t super common in first, second and third years - it’s slightly more common in first year than in the others because people are still getting used to exam styles/how to study, and because you can’t specialise to the extent you might want to. In PBS, 2.ii’s and 3rds are surprisingly common in first and second year - the majority of people get 1sts or 2.is, but getting a lower grade isn’t uncommon because a lot of people struggle with PBS2/PBS4!

What are the mandatory PBS papers? (: (Sorry if I'm bothering you with these questions)

Nah, it’s fine, I’m taking a break right now, and answering questions is more productive than staring out of the library window haha! 

So in first year, the mandatory PBS papers are PBS1 and PBS2. PBS1 is an introduction to psychology -- it covers five broad topics (individual differences, perception, emotions/close relationships, health psychology and reasoning/decision-making) and provides you with an intro to subsections of each topic. It’s like a normal arts paper, where you do essays for supervisions. PBS2 is psychological methods & enquiries which is the more biological sort of psychology. It basically introduces you to the basics of cognitive neuroscience/psychology, and goes over things like genetics, brain imaging techniques, functional neurobiology, study design etc. for the first term. Second term’s an intro to stats, so you learn how to do the main statistical tests. The exam’s a mixture of short answer q’s, stats questions, and short essays.

In second year, you’ve got PBS3 and PBS4. PBS3 is social and developmental psychology -- you do developmental in the first term, social in the second, and you write essays for supervisions. PBS4 is a subset of NSTIB experimental psychology (basically second-year natsci’s do three papers, but PBSers do four, so it’s unfair to make us do the full paper that they do -- so we do about two thirds of it). Instead of being focused on methods (like PBS2), it looks a lot more at broad topics of interest in psychology (learning/memory/perception/reasoning). It can be quite neuroscience based (particularly the perception part of the course). You write shorter essays for supervisions (which are usually weekly) and the exam is a mix of short notes and essays!
