Summary: Four times Rebecca was wrong about Ted’s love language and the one time she got it just right.
1. Gifts
Rebecca had always loved gifts—getting them, unwrapping them, expressing delight over whatever she found inside. The whole process of receiving a gift made her feel warm and fuzzy, lighting her up from the inside out.
It sometimes made her feel a bit selfish or materialistic, like her love depended on things and not the important things.
For all Rupert’s faults, of which there were many, he was very good at gift giving. He always managed to pick something that fit her style, the occasion, or, at the very least, packaged it in such a way that the unwrapping felt like a gift itself. A small part of her wondered if that’s why she stayed so long. Each box acting as a balm to the many other hurts in their relationship.
But then there was Ted who brought her biscuits in a pink box each morning, no strings or obligations attached and she remembered what she loved about gifts in the first place. The idea that they were good and kind.
It was more than just receiving sinfully delicious treats. There was a pleasure in knowing someone had thought of her during their day. That they had gone out of their way to get something they knew would make her happy.
The mere act of taking the box from Ted’s outstretched hand made her toes curl with delight, her hips wiggling in her seat as she lifted the tiny lid to expose the crumbly shortbread biscuits. It was like she was five years old and seeing the roller skates she wanted under the Christms tree all over again.
Which is why she couldn't wait to give Ted his Christmas gift.
She felt like a kid on Christmas morning, the anticipation building each time she caught a glimpse of the box on her office coffee table, beautifully wrapped in a rich navy blue paper with silver ribbon and a big red bow.
They had been through so much their first season together and, while she knew he forgave her, she wanted to do something special to mark their first major holiday as allies—as friends. She knew he’d been coveting a pair of limited edition sneakers, some sort of exclusive design she didn’t really understand other than he told Beard he wanted them more than Ralphie wanted a Red Ryder BB gun.
“Wowee! Thank you, Boss, this is really something,” he said, eyes wide, admiring the shoes nestled in tissue paper. “You know what, I’m going to wear these on the flight back to Kansas for good luck. Ooh! And I’ll wear them on New Year’s too, to kick in the new year with style.”
Rebecca smiled, she was thrilled he was excited. But it wasn’t quite the reaction she expected.
He clearly loved them. He was more enthusiastic than anyone else she’d given a gift to this holiday season, but she felt like she had missed the mark somehow. She was positive it was the perfect gift for Ted Lasso, but he didn’t . . . light up like she expected.
(She probably should have wondered why she cared so much about lighting her gaffer up, but that was for future Rebecca to sort out.)
She’d assumed her feeling towards gifts was a universal reaction, after all, who doesn’t love gifts? But then, she and Keeley had a proper girl’s night, complete with white wine spritzers and sheet masks, where they took turns filling out various ridiculous quizzes in the back of old Cosmopolitan magazines. When Rebecca completed the one about love languages (confirming the importance of gifts to her emotional well-being), she realized where she had gone wrong.
Yes, everyone liked gifts, but it wasn’t what everyone loved the most. There were other ways to make people feel loved and those ways mattered.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t heard of love languages, she didn’t live under a rock, but she’d never been with someone where it really mattered to her. Not enough to really think about it.
So it became a Thing for Rebecca when she and Ted started dating a few weeks later. Because dating Ted unleashed a steady parade of sweet treats and small “thinking of you” gifts that make her feel settled and secure in a way she didn’t know was possible.
The book she had been wanting waited on her bedside table after a long day of meetings, little boxes of truffles snuck into her purse before trying press days, and on a random Tuesday evening, Ted pressed a small, beautifully wrapped jewelry box in her hand, “just because.”
For all the joy it brought, it also brought a problem: she didn’t feel like she could properly reciprocate. Without gift giving to fall back on, she felt unmoored, but it was important to her that she made Ted feel as loved as he made her feel. There was just a learning curve to it, that’s all.
And so, determined and in love, Rebecca began to study.

Thirty Three. Part 2
I was dreaming of her, dreaming of her scent, her voice, her breathy moans in my ear as she curled against me, hands exploring her body. My eyes shot open, breathing heavily. My hand wiping my forehead, I am sweating. That dream felt kind of real, like she was here with me. I really want her so bad, staring up to the ceiling trying to gather myself, I just knew it. I knew I would be dreaming of Robyn after that facetime call, she was turning me on but I ended up falling asleep, clearly. Looking down at myself, I haven’t peed myself, but my dick is so fucking hard right now. Reaching my hand to the side of me, grabbing my phone from the side table “damn” it’s only like four in the morning, I wonder if Robyn is awake or will be asleep. Let me try her, you never know she may be awake, and she could help me with this issue, I mean this is on her and she did turn me on looking that fine. Tapping on Twin’ name, I feel so goofy right now. I can’t believe I am here having a nasty dream about Robyn, like am I child “you’re awake poppa?” oh Robyn is awake, she really awake “you having a party or something?” sounds like it “just a few drinks with my friends, I am shocked. You fell asleep, is everything ok?” I want Robyn so bad right now, it’s been far too long “mhmm I want you” I said it and I can only imagine what Robyn’ face is like “I am here?” she retorted “like I want you, your legs around my head, I am here dreaming of you. I want you so bad” the line went silent “oh” she let out “you are thinking on when I called you daddy” she said in a whisper, that soothing, sexy voice humming over the “could say” I whispered, I don’t know why I am whispering “It is late you know..” she dragged out “I need you” I said it again, I know she is smirking “I am going to bed” Robyn announced “he harassing you, go away poppa” they all calling me that “stop it now, I will be back. Depends” on she won’t be back, she is lying.
I smiled, she is in her hotel room now. God, I want her so bad. I exhaled slowly, mouth away from the receiver. There was a long comfortable silence, she is just listening to my breathing and I listened to her's. If we both closed our eyes it was like we were still next to each other. All that was missing was her warmth, her presence, everything I could hope to have, just short of the real thing. Breaking the silence “I watched you sleep for a while, I can’t believe you fell asleep on me though” I chuckled “medication kicking my ass” it’s like I could hear her smile, and as I closed my eyes I could see her. Delicate smile on her face, the phone to her ear “What are you wearing?” I asked her, voice soft and seductive “same thing I showed you earlier, just panties and a robe. How about you?” Robyn’ voice is so fucking beautiful, it’s sexual as fuck “me, uhm boxers. That is all” I missed her, but phone sex. That was just gonna make me miss her more “I was dreaming about you…” I whispered, “Oh really?” She asked, her curiosity peeked by her words and her sultry tone “And what was I doing?” oh we are doing this.
Waving to the crowd as I walked off stage, another date done. Another day down, closer to when I see my man. I am so excited to see him, he thinks I am not coming because I said I need to go Atlantic City but he doesn’t understand I have a two day break so I am seeing him, I am close by so I thought I would see him. See how he is, clearly he has become hornier. This man has sent me nothing but dick pictures, I am sick. He is sending them unprovoked now, I mean I don’t mind it but give me a break. I see his penis more than my own breasts, but I have to entertain him, of course I will he is my man. I have a rolling stone interview tonight so that will be done and in the morning I have the photoshoot and then after that I will be with Chris, I am keeping to the I am not coming vibe, I want to surprise him. I am super proud of him; I did think he would kick off way more then I thought but he hasn’t. He has used the time to reflect on things, he seems so much calmer “another day done” my tour manager said, Tina passed me my jacket “thank you baby and yes, I can’t wait for this shit to be over. Not in a bad way but I just have a lot on right now” making my way backstage ready to leave this place.
Making my way into the living room “Josh” the interviewer shot up, he seemed in a daze to meet me “wow, you are just amazing” shaking his hand “you think so” I laughed “I am nothing special now boy, come on. Nice that you can come out so late, you ready for the club? You don’t look it” I pointed at his outfit “club?” he retorted caught off guard “you hanging with Rihanna boy, you going to party with me. I mean we just going to go and have some fun, welcome to my life boo. Come” waving him over, I need a drink before we go “I didn’t know, the office just said to be here for eleven” I laughed, I laughed out because I was late “and I had you waiting outside, one thing about me. I will be late for everything, you smoke?” sitting on the bar stool “no, not at all” this guy needs better shoes “so they got me hanging with a nigga with bad shoes, I mean by all means but come on” picking the pre-rolled blunt from the counter “I left this for future Rihanna, past Rihanna rolled this and left for the concert and look, I am happy now” I smiled to myself “and relax Josh, I don’t bite” I winked at him “Tina! Pour some drinks for us” placing the blunt between my lips, grabbing the lighter to light the blunt “I am not prepared, I am just saying this out loud, you are very empowering” he is just full of compliments, clearly.
Josh and I clinked glasses “this bitch is my best friend Mel, I do not go anywhere without her. She is my other half” drinking the wine “so you both been friends since forever? Day one?” nodding my head “it was never a thing of she doesn’t have the talent or that she is not me. She is me, we are one. She is my best friend, my lover. She kept my bed warm at night, not in that way” I laughed “but where I go she goes, we been riding for each other since school. My team, we are all close. Shit, they all seen me naked, I walk around naked. Not in this occasion but we close, family type of close” Josh is just soaking everything in, an interviewer of course he is “does Mel still keep your bed warm at night now” I giggled “not that I know have a boyfriend, no” Mel and I just laughed “there was a lot of speculation that you was cheating on ASAP Rocky when you got with your current boyfriend, how it just started. I don’t know if that is something you read but it seemed like you had him there and had ASAP, was that the case or not” shaking my head “no, I am not a cheater. It happened quick and I get that I really do but I told Rakim straight away. I may have jumped because I was excited, I haven’t seen him for what seven years? So when I saw him, I just yeah. But I am happy, so happy that I could see myself leaving fame” I said it but laughed, I laughed it off but I meant it “you would do that?” Josh questioned “to protect my relationship, to confirm Chris hasn’t said any of this or asked of me to do that but he got hurt because of me, I love my fans I do but I have to think of my happiness but I won’t leave yet but it’s just something there” Josh looks shook “I hope you don’t, I think you got so much more to do yet, we haven’t heard the last of you” I pointed at him smiling “exactly, we can drink to that” holding my glass up.
Putting my earrings on, I wasn’t lying about going to the club “anyone got Josh new shoes” making my way out of the bedroom “wowee” he is crushing on me “I want you to include how much you crushing on me” I laughed “I will, because there is no denying how gracefully beautiful you are. After the incident at your home, the guy got sentenced and it was mentioned he was there for you? He quoted things that I am not repeating, and I am sure you read, does that not scare you?” taking in a deep breath “I can’t be scared all my life with things, I can only pray to god to look over me. Men can be scary, let’s be real. If I was alone, I don’t know. And it does scare me because there are some crazy people out there, I just want to move on from it. I do” sitting down on the couch “is your boyfriend not here? Does he know he got attacked because of you?” I chuckled “he does, and he is in his hometown healing. I will be moving away from that place, sometimes I think I want to move out of country. Maybe back to Barbados where I can be me, where I don’t need to look over my shoulder, where my family and friends can be happy, you know?” shaking my head “maybe that is the peace you need, which leads me to you being stressed which caused you to miscarry. I am sorry to hear that happened to you, when I read it on TMZ and I saw the video of you crying, you made me cry because I could feel your pain through it, it was a weird feeling. The love and support you received and how you highlighted that this happens to a lot of women and how stressful it can be, being in the that moment for you, how did you feel?” I hate speaking on it but it’s my first interview since “erm, wow. I find it hard still, look at me teary eyed. But I uhm, when I was told I didn’t believe it. I just went within myself; I was in shock and I was in pain. So much pain, I am not stupid because if we’re having sex without protection I knew I would fall pregnant and look at god, I just feel pain. And I do, but with the help and support I push through. The baby wasn’t developed fully but when I read that it’s heart would be beating; it just makes me cry. I lost a piece of me when that happened, and then when Chris got hurt. I just felt pain, I felt like I was getting attacked like I am not supposed to be happy. But I need to protect my family, so yeah. Once this tour is over I have a lot to think about, for me, for my family, for my relationship” smiling lightly.
“Do you feel like your career has got in the way? Because I don’t know if I am hearing this right from you, do you think the things that happened wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t on tour?” Josh asked, I paused thinking trying to gather my thoughts “if you are asking if I wouldn’t have lost my baby, you’re right. I had a lot on without noticing, I am to blame too because I was changing, and I didn’t take action. I think maybe I have been thinking about my future too much that now I feel like I am too busy, but I am not saying I would leave music, I love doing it but I think I need to have my time, I need to heal properly. Nobody is me; nobody understands how I feel when I stand there. Because it was me, and I am going to be selfish and I am going to spend time with my man, but I think leaving the country seems to be my way forward anyways” I want to stray away from that miscarriage shit “are you in love?” I laughed out “yes I am, this is why I don’t get why people think I was cheating on Rakim. What happened was I knew Chris from when I came here as an exchange student, I knew him, and I fell for him there, but we split paths and we met again. I never forgot him Josh, never did. You just don’t, not when someone makes you smile the way they do. Am I in love? Yes I am, it’s rare to find that and I did. I found it in him and if you met him, you will see what I love about him, oh are we ready to go?” grabbing my glass, I am ready to get out of here.
I hope Chris appreciates this because I have been to the club, had that interview. Went to bed and then had the photoshoot in the morning all to fit him in, I can even stay the night. I am tired, the fuck. I don’t even know where Tina put him, I just said I did but I really don’t, she found the place, but it seems very peaceful around here, quiet and out of the way. I said to my manager I will see them in Baltimore tomorrow “is this the place?” I have no idea what I be paying out for “yes it is” oh this is fancy, no wonder Chris said it was too nice, I am super excited to see Chris in person. I am tired of talking to him dirty too, he is a damn feign. I don’t even want to think where he is putting those cumrags, he is nasty so I can only imagine “I can open my car door, thank you. See you tomorrow” grabbing the backpack “are you sure? I will watch you go in” opening the door and getting out of the SUV “thank you” closing the door, walking up the drive. Chris is having breakfast in the afternoon, he said he just woke up so I guess it will be a nice surprise for him. Walking up the steps, I can’t wait to see my bald poppa in person. Knocking on the door and stepping back from the door, I know they are eating but someone can open the damn. I know Chris won’t be coming to the door, I was going to knock again but I can see someone coming to the door. Seeing Clinton’ face “hey” I said smiling “oh wow, what a great surprise. Come in, come in please” he opened the door wider for me “what that!?” Chris shouted, stepping inside “he is in the dining room, he is going to be so excited. Does he know? I don’t think he does, or he would have mentioned it” shaking my head following Clinton to the dining room “who is it?” Chris asked again “for you” Clinton pointed behind him, Chris looked behind him “w-what? Twin?” he said in shock “I came to see your bald self in person, hey boys” placing my backpack down “oh my god, you are really here. Wow” placing my arm around him, pressing a kiss to the top of his bald head “I have been waiting to do that to you” Chris is still trying to get over me being here, he is shocked.

Buck Stardust, Space Cop!
The following story contains material some readers may find objectionable. Reader discretion is advised.
The thug runs down the crowded sidewalk, shoving people out of the way. Two cops chase behind him, blasters drawn. The thug shoves a woman into a fruit cart, sending a dozen oranges rolling down onto the street. The cops slip on the oranges and fall flat onto their backs.
“He’s getting away!” one of them shouts, firing his blaster at the thug, who nimbly avoids each of the shots.
“No, he isn’t,” the other cop says with a smile. “Do you hear that?”
Roaring sirens and flashing lights wash over the sidewalk as a man on hoverbike races past. He wears a black leather jacket emblazoned by a silver star and a blue stripe that clings to his muscular frame. A pair of aviator glasses, a thick mustache, and a motorcycle helmet cover his face, but his fellow officers can tell just from his body language who he is.
“It’s Stardust!” one of the cops shouts, overjoyed.
Buck Stardust, Space Cop, draws his blaster and fires at the fleeing thug. Civilians jump out of the way as he pulls his hoverbike onto the sidewalk. The thug is fast, most thugs are, but Stardust’s bike is faster. Buck Stardust closes in on the fleeing thug and grabs him by the back of his shirt.
The thug struggles against Stardust’s grasp and trips. The front fender of the hoverbike slams into his back, knocking him to the ground. The speeding hoverbike flies over the thug. Buck Stardust glances over his shoulder at the thug behind him. He knows that the turning radius on hoverbikes is awful, and that, by the time he gets back to the thug, the thug will be long gone.
Buck Stardust grits his teeth and extends his arm out far from his bike. He hooks it around a streetlight and slingshots his bike, turning it 180 degrees in an instant. The hoverbike barrels back towards the thug as he crawls back to his feet.
Stardust turns his bike, slamming it into the thug as it comes to a halt. He steps off the bike, draws his blaster, and points it down at the defeated criminal. “You have the right to remain silent, punk,” he says with a smirk.
A crowd of civilians cheers as Stardust’s fellow officers run up to him. “You really saved our hides, Buck,” one of them says.
“Just doing my job, keeping the streets safe from scum like this piece of shit,” Stardust says, kicking the thug in the side.
+++
“Marvelous work, Buck,” Captain Lemongrass says, pouring two tall glasses of whiskey. “Care for a drink?”
“But Captain, isn’t drinking on the job against regulations?” Stardust asks. He and the Captain stare each other in the eyes for a moment before laughing. Buck Stardust takes his glass.
“Don’t pay mind to the whining of bureaucrats who’d never have the guts to do what you do, Buck,” Lemongrass says. “You’re out there fighting the good fight, keeping our people safe.”
“Come on, Cap, tell me something I don’t know.”
The Captain sighs. “Got a call from the mayor’s office after your arrest earlier. Bunch of people have their panties in a twist over excessive force,” he says, with excessive force punctuated with air quotes.
“Shitstain’s still breathing, ain’t he?” Buck says, rolling his eyes.
“Regardless, some lady from the mayor’s office is coming down to bitch at you.”
“Diversity hire?” Stardust asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Probably. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure it becomes nothing more than a lecture,” Lemongrass says. “Besides, you won’t have to deal with the Mayor for very long. With the way he’s being raked over the coals for treating the aliens with kid gloves, he won’t be in power for much longer.”
“That remains to be seen, Mr. Lemongrass,” a woman’s voice says.
Tiffany Annalise, the woman from the Mayor’s office, walks into Captain Lemongrass’s office carrying a large stack of papers. She glances at Stardust. “Oh, good, the problem child is here,” she says.
“What’s with the paperwork, Miss Analise?” Lemongrass asks.
Annalise slams the pile of papers down of Lemongrass’s desk. “This, dear Captain, are all the complaints we received after Officer Stardust’s debacle,” she says.
“I got the guy, didn’t I?” Stardust says.
“That isn’t the point!” Analise shouts in her shrill voice. “There are rules, rules that people of this Colony safe. Rules that you seem incapable of following-”
“Easy, Miss Analise,” Lemongrass says, propping his feet up on his desk. “Stardust may be unorthodox, but he’s still the best cop I have.”
“He’s a loose cannon!”
“He gets results,” Lemongrass says. “Your regulations are so concerned with doing things the right way, with castrating our cops so thugs don’t get their feelings hurt, that you’re stopping good cops from fighting crime.”
Analise points at Stardust. “He’s a violent maniac-”
“No, not a maniac. I’m the guy who fights maniacs,” Stardust says, finishing his drink. “What I am is a warrior. I’m a knight sworn to protect the people of this Colony from the sick freaks who want to mess with their property and their lives. I fight violence with violence. Violence is my tool and I have mastered it.”
Analise scoffs. “I’ll make sure you lose your badge. Maybe not today, but someday,” she says.
Buck Stardust sets his empty glass down and crosses his arms. “You know, if you weren’t a chick, I’d deck you for that,” he says.
“How dare you-”
“Have a nice day, Miss Analise,” Captain Lemongrass says. “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
+++
Buck Stardust parks his hoverbike in front of a nice, suburban home. The lawn is trimmed and the windows are spotless. A young boy plays in the driveway, throwing a basketball at a hoop. The ball bounces off the backboard and Buck Stardust jumps, catching the ball and dunking it in the hoop.
“Wowee, that was awesome, dad!” the boy says.
Stardust runs his fingers through the boy’s hair, roughing it up a bit. “Good day at school, sport?” he asks.
“Uh-huh. Our teacher taught us about the history of the Colony and how the aliens came and how you’re keeping us safe from them,” the boy says. “Is it true that they can spit acid and read minds?”
“You don’t have to worry about things like that,” Stardust says. “If any goddamn alien tries to mess with my family, I’ll be ready. I’ll turn the motherfucker to dust.”
“Be careful with your language, honey,” Stardust’s wife says as she walks over to him, carrying a tray of lemonade and pastries.
Buck Stardust puts an arm around her shoulders. “If you had a problem with the way I talk, you probably shouldn’t have married me,” he says in a playful voice.
Mrs. Stardust laughs. “Have a good day at work, honey?” she asks.
“Beat up a few animals, got yelled at by a woman from the mayor’s office. Nothing out of the ordinary.”
Stardust’s son shoots the ball at the hoop. It hits the rim and bounces back. He jumps to catch it, but the ball slips through his fingers and bounces into the street, where it is hit by a passing hovercar.
“My ball!” the boy shouts.
“Calm down, it’s just a ball. Nothing to get worked up about,” Stardust says. “I’ll get you a new one tomorrow.”
+++
“Last night, an alien escaped from the seventh ward,” Captain Lemongrass says to a group of police officers gathered for the morning meeting. “Our officers put it down before it was able to hurt anyone, but it managed to get as far as Fifth Street before we caught it. This shows a hole in our defenses. I’m going to be doubling the number of patrolmen guarding the blue line, at least until we figure out how an alien slipped by.”
A wave of groans and complaints covers the room. The Captain raises his hand and the room goes silent. “Listen, I don’t expect you to like this, but this is how it has to be if we’re going to keep this city from descending into chaos,” he says. “Thirteen years ago, the aliens invaded this Colony. We didn’t ask for this, we didn’t want it, but we dealt with it. The bureaucrats tied our hands and stopped us from wiping them out, but we did the best we did. We forced them into the lower wards, where the thugs and the addicts live. And we need to keep these aliens there, make sure they don’t invade the nice parts of the city. Because, if we don’t, our society will crumble.”
The officers salute their Captain. “I’ll let you know by the end of the day if you have to guard the line tonight,” he says. “You’re all dismissed.”
Buck Stardust catches up to the Captain as he’s walking back to his office. “Need me out there tonight, Captain?” he asks.
“I haven’t finalized the assignments yet, but no,” Captain Lemongrass says. “You’re a good officer, Buck. You deserve a night of rest. Let the others handle this one.”
“With all due respect, Captain, I’d prefer to guard the line tonight,” Stardust says. “No offense to the others, but most of them are imbeciles. If something’s going to happen, I want to be there, so I can make sure the person responsible is punished.”
“Volunteering? Not sure if your new partner is going to be happy about that.”
“My new what?”
Lemongrass and Stardust step into the Captain’s office, where a young space cop is standing. His uniform is tidy and his badge is shiny. He has a youthful face with the beginnings of a peach fuzz mustache. He perks up as Stardust enters and offers his hand. Stardust stares at it without taking it.
“Buck, this is Bobby Rook. He’s going to be your new partner starting today,” Lemongrass says.
Stardust rapidly switches between glaring at Rook and Lemongrass. “It’s nice to be formally introduced to you, sir,” Rook says.
“Jesus, Cap, could you have gotten a younger cop?” Stardust asks.
“Don’t pin this on me. The mayor’s office demanded I assign you a partner to keep you in line,” Lemongrass says.
“You don’t have to worry about my competence, sir. I graduated top of my class at the academy, with a degree in criminal punishment and perfect scores on all of the physical exams,” Rook says.
“Oh, fantastic. You got me a brown-noser with no experience working the street!” Stardust says.
“No, I got you the only recruit who might be capable of keeping up with you,” Lemongrass says. “Besides, it’s good that he’s new. That means you can teach him to be a warrior of justice just like yourself.”
“I’m eager to learn, sir,” Rook says.
Stardust grumbles a few curse words before sighing. “Don’t slow me down, kid,” he says.
+++
Stardust pulls the police hovercar into a drive-thru. A robotic voice asks him his order. “Two coffees, black,” he says.
“Actually, sir, I’d like some sugar with mine,” Rook says.
“No, you don’t,” Stardust says, pulling ahead. “We have a long day ahead of us and I don’t want you watering down your fuel like a goddamn kid on Halloween.”
“Right,” Rook says, jotting Stardust’s words down in a notebook.
“What the hell is that?” Stardust asks, ripping the notebook out of Rook’s hands.
“It’s a notebook, sir. I’m taking notes, so I can better emulate your actions,” Rook says.
Stardust tosses the notebook out the window. He takes his coffee from the cashier and drives away. Stardust is silent as the car drives through the city. After an hour of driving, it reaches a ridge on the Colony that looks out over the city.
Stardust parks the hovercar and steps out. “What are we doing here, sir?” Rook asks, following him.
“You aren’t going to become a good cop by keeping track of everything I do. We’re here so I can teach you to be a good cop,” Stardust says. “I come here every morning before I start patrolling, to get my head in the game.”
Rook steps forward, to the edge of the ridge, and looks out. From here, he can see the entire Colony; the densely populated urban centers where most of the Colony lives; the plush suburbs where first-class citizens like Stardust live; the Oxygen farms surrounding the city; the endless sea of cold and black outside the Colony’s dome.
“Looking out at this, what do you see?” Stardust asks.
“I see Lunar Colony 6, an enclosed city of approximately three million people,” Rook says.
“Yeah? That isn’t what I see,” Stardust says, sitting on the hood of the hovercar and staring up at the sky. “I see the crack.”
Rook looks up, at the glass dome surrounding the colony. He’s never known a world not surrounded by the dome, so he barely notices it. Still, if he concentrates, he can see the not quite clear hemisphere covering the Colony. And, if he looks straight up, he can see the crack. A jagged line stretching across the dome, sealed shut by hardened grey metal.
“You remember when the invasion happened?” Stardust asks.
“Somewhat. Admittedly, I was only a child at the time,” Rook says.
“I see it, every time I close my eyes. The sky broke open and an alien ship crashed down in the center of the city. We didn’t know what was going on, not yet, we just knew we were in danger. Oxygen was leaking, pressure was dropping, we were dying. We were under attack. If the Space Cops had acted slower, if they didn’t close the breach in time, everyone in the Colony would have died,” Stardust says. “The aliens say that it wasn’t intentional. They think we’re stupid, they think we’re too dumb to see an invasion for an invasion. Well, I’m not dumb. I know they tried to wipe us out. I know they’re out there, biding their time, waiting to kill our women and children. I’m ready for them.”
Rook doesn’t say anything. “How long have you been here, on the Colony?” Stardust asks.
“I was born here, Sir,” Rook replies.
“Your family, how long has your family been here?”
“Three generations.”
“My family’s been here for six. My great-great-great-grandfather was one of the original Colonists. Living in a place that long, it becomes a part of you. The need to protect this Colony is burned into my blood,” Stardust says. “The aliens, they don’t understand that, having loyalty to your home. They’re like locusts, moving from planet to planet, killing and looting.”
Stardust jumps off the hood of the car and walks over to Rook. “You want to be a Space Cop? You want to protect this Colony from those who would do her harm?” he asks.
“Yes sir,” Rook says.
“Good. There are three things you need to understand if you’re going to be my partner. Lesson one: Loyalty above all else. From this moment on, you are not Robert Rook, individual. You are a member of the Colony Six Police Department. If one of us is hurt, we all bleed. If one of us is killed, we all feel the pain.”
“Understood, sir.”
“This loyalty is needed for the second key to being a good Space Cop: we live and die by our might,” Stardust says. “The mindless masses of criminals out there, they outnumber us one thousand to one. The only thing keeping you alive is your gun and your fellow officers. There are more of them, yes, but they’re disorganized, sloppy, stupid. We’re better than them. We’re precise, we’re trained, and we have each other. We are mighty.”
“Right.”
“This strength gives us the authority for the third and final thing you need to know: your job, above all else, is to punish evildoers. Your job is to make those who kill, who steal, who maim, afraid to even step out of their front doors. Your job is to make the spineless masses out there so terrified of you they won’t even consider breaking the law. Any questions?”
“Wouldn’t it be easier to remember all this if I still had my notebook?” Rook asks.
Stardust scowls at him. “Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood, sir,” Rook says.
Buck Stardust sighs and walks to the edge of the ridge. He stares out over the city. “There’s a thing I do, every morning, before I go on patrol,” he says. “I’m going to show you it, and you aren’t going to tell anyone. And, if you do tell anyone, I will murder you. This is not a joke, I will literally shoot you in the heart and watch as the life leaves your eyes.”
“Okay...?” Rook says, a bit timid.
“Put your hands on your hips, stare out over the city, and repeat after me,” Stardust says. He places his hands on his hips and Rook does the same. “I am a hero, I am the defender of this city from the beasts that want to destroy it!”
“What?” Rook asks.
“Say it!” Stardust shouts.
“I am a hero, I am the defender of this city from the beasts that want to destroy it!” Rook shouts.
“Now, how do you feel?” Stardust asks.
“Like a hero,” Rook says shyly.
“Hold on to that feeling, because that feeling is pure.”
Stardust squints at the city. “There’s a large crowd congregating on Sixth Street,” he says. “Get ready, Rook, it’s time for you to do some real policework.”
+++
Stardust’s car skids to a stop in the middle of the city. Dozens of rioters flood the streets. They shout, they scream, they chant as they march through the city carrying handcrafted signs. Fifty cops stand, shoulder to shoulder, riot shields and batons in hand, keeping the flood at bay. Captain Lemongrass stands behind the cops, holding a bullhorn. “Please disperse, this is an unlawful gathering,” he says, the bullhorn making his voice as loud as that of God.
Stardust jumps out of the hovercar, slamming the door behind him. He and Rook run up to the shield-bearing officers. “Sorry I’m late,” Stardust says.
“Stardust! I’m glad you’re here,” Lemongrass says.
“What’s going on, sir?” Rook asks.
Lemongrass sighs and looks at the angry hoard. Their march has come to a pause ten feet from the police line. The tension in the air is as thick as steel. “Rioters, angry over last night's incident,” Lemongrass says.
“Angry that an alien got out of the lower wards, or angry that we didn’t wear kid gloves while enforcing the law?” Stardust says, rolling his eyes.
“The crowd isn’t too out of control yet, just some broken windows and graffiti, but that could change at any moment,” Lemongrass says.
Suddenly, a plastic water bottle hits Lemongrass in the head, thrown by the crowd. “Motherfucker!” Lemongrass says, holding his head.
“That’s it, I’m ending this,” Stardust says, shoving his way to the front of the police line.
“Easy, Buck, we don’t want to cause an incident,” Lemongrass says, grabbing Stardust by the shoulder. “These people have been manipulated into thinking we’re the enemy, don’t throw more fuel on the fire.”
“You don’t get rid of a fire by letting it keep burning, Captain,” Buck Stardust says.
“Buck, these people are scared-”
“Scared, is that what you see?” Buck says. “I don’t see fear in their eyes. Fear is the emotion of a rabbit running from a fox. I see anger, I see hate, I see malice. I see a crowd of killers using last night’s incident as an excuse to loot and destroy. I see wolves. But no, I don’t see fear.”
Stardust walks past the cops with riot shields, hand on his holster. Rook and Lemongrass look on with terror. “Listen up!” Stardust shouts. “I’m going to count to five. By the time I reach five, I want each and every one of you to leave here and go home. This is your last warning.”
Various members of the crowd shout obscenities at Stardust. “One,” he says, a slight smile on his face. “Two. Three. Four-”
“Man, fuck you!” a young man at the front of the crowd shouts.
Stardust turns stone-faced. He glances back at Lemongrass, giving him a look that says let me handle this. Stardust walks up to the man who shouted at him. The man wears a red hoodie. He stares the man dead in the eyes, so close that he can see the sweat dripping from the young man’s forehead. “You want to repeat that?” Stardust says calmly.
“I told you to go fuck yourself, pig!” the man shouts.
Stardust smiles. “Alrighty then,” he says.
In an instant, Stardust draws his blasting, pistol-whipping the man in the face. The man staggers backward as chaos consumes the street. Rioters swarm Stardust, forcing him to the ground. The riot cops charge in.
Stardust struggles against the weight holding him down. Three or four rioters tackled him, he isn’t sure the exact number. One rioter grabs the barrel of Stardust’s gun, trying to yank it out of his hand. Stardust pulls the trigger and laughs as the thief runs away, clutching a bleeding hand.
The other tacklers run away, scared by the gun. Stardust pulls himself to his feet and assesses the situation. The police are handily defeating the rioters, smashing them with batons and putting them in handcuffs. Still, some are fighting back. A large rioter picks up a garbage can and throws it at Stardust. Stardust jumps out of the way as the rioter charges at him.
A blaster shot strikes the man in the chest and he crumples to the ground. Stardust looks over his shoulder to see Rook running in, blaster in hand. “Nice shot, kid,” Stardust says.
“Are you okay, sir?” Rook asks.
“I’ve faced worse,” Stardust says, elbowing a rioter in the face.
“The other officers have the more aggressive rioters in custody. Most of them are fleeing.”
Stardust scowls. “Damnit,” he says.
“What?” Rook asks.
“If they’re fleeing, that means that they’ll be out there, ready to cause another riot the next time they feel bored,” Stardust says.
“What do we do?”
“Go get Lemongrass, tell him to shut down eight street and ninth street. We’ll box them in, keep any criminals from slipping through the cracks.”
“Got it,” Rook says before running off.
Stardust scans the crowd, looking for a specific individual. He finds his target, draws his blaster, and fires.
+++
An hour later, the riot has been quelled. Buck Stardust sits in the back of a hover ambulance. A paramedic bandages the scrapes received during the battle. Rook stands next to the ambulance, wiping the blood from his baton.
Sixth Street is covered in men and women with bruised faces sitting on their knees, hands chained behind their backs, guarded by an army of police waiting for cars to come and take them back to the station. Stardust sees destruction as far as he can see; shattered windows, crashed hovercars, graffitied obscenities. The desolation disgusts Stardust.
A pair of paramedics push a gurney towards the ambulance. Stardust hops out and approaches them. “Hold it,” he says, stopping them in their tracks. “Where are you taking this man?”
“To the hospital, he’s been shot in the leg,” one of the paramedics says.
“Not yet, there’s something I need to do first,” Stardust says.
He walks over to the feet of the gurney and looks over the man lying before him. It’s the man from before, the rioter in the red hoodie who told Stardust to go fuck himself. The lower half of the man’s left is gone, burned off at the knee. The moment he sees Stardust, the rioter jerks back in fear.
“Not so tough now, are you?” Stardust says, smirking.
The rioter grabs a paramedic. “Get me away from this psychopath!” he shouts.
“Easy now, you don’t want to make this worse than it already is, do you?” Stardust says.
“You shot me!” the man shouts. “I was running away and you shot me!”
“In the leg. Be thankful I had the mercy to avoid shooting you in the heart,” Stardust says.
“Officer, we need to get this man to a hospital,” the paramedic says.
“In a minute,” Stardust says. He pulls out a pair of handcuffs and throws them on the rioter’s chest. “Cuff yourself, you’re under arrest.”
“What?” the rioter shouts.
“Don’t bitch at me for arresting you. If you don’t want to go to jail, don’t do the crime.”
“What fucking crime?”
“Resisting arrest. Assaulting a police officer. Inciting a riot. Take your pick,” Stardust says.
“I didn’t do anything-”
Stardust grabs the gurney and flips it over, dumping the rioter onto the ground. Stardust puts his knee on the man’s back and begins cuffing him. Rook runs over, blaster in hand. “Is everything okay, sir? I heard shouting,” he shouts.
“Nothing to worry about, kid,” Stardust says. “This punk won’t be hurting anyone ever again. I bet prison’s fun with only one leg.”
“You’re insane,” the rioter says, sobbing. “I didn’t do anything.”
“Oh yeah?” Stardust says, reaching into the rioter’s back pocket. “Then what’s this?” Stardust pulls out a pocket knife and shows it to Rook.
“I work in a grocery store, I use it to cut open boxes!” the rioter whines.
“Sure, and you just happened to bring it to a riot,” Stardust says, rolling his eyes. “You approached a police officer, carrying a weapon, screaming obscenities. Then you reached for your pockets like a fucking idiot, and I’m the bad guy for defending myself? Fuck you.”
Stardust finishes cuffing the rioter and spits on him. He tosses the knife to Rook. “Bag that up as evidence,” he says.
Rook sticks the knife in his pocket and follows after Stardust. “That was amazing, sir,” Rook says. “I didn’t even see that knife.”
“That’s the problem with new cops. They don’t see the threats,” Stardust says. “You need to treat every person as a potential threat. Every time you step out of your front door, you need to be thinking about your family, thinking about what would happen to them if you were gone. You need to be ready to kill, or you’re going to end up in the ground. Understand?”
“I think so,” Rook says. “But, isn’t that type of thinking a bit dangerous? I mean, what gives us the right to be violent?”
Stardust scoffs. “You act like that’s a bad thing. Here’s the thing Rook, we live in a violent world,” he says. “Let me tell you a story Lemongrass told me when I first became a space cop. In this world, there are two types of people: doves, and hawks.”
Stardust gestures at the various vandalized buildings along Sixth Street. “Most people are doves. Calm, friendly, peaceful. If the world was made entirely of doves, it would be a good place. But the world isn’t just made of doves,” he says. He looks at the chained rioters being taken away by the police. “There are also hawks. Monsters without remorse, creatures who live only to kill and rape and steal. Hawks aren’t peaceful like doves, they live for violence. And, if you don’t kill the hawks, the hawks will kill the doves.”
“Then what are we, hawks or doves?” Rook asks.
“We, Rook, are something different. We’re eagles,” Stardust says. “We’re like Hawks, capable of violence, but we don’t use it for our own gain. We use it to protect the doves and punish the hawks. We keep society safe and civil. That’s what gives us the right.”
+++
Hours later, after the sun has gone down, Rook and Stardust sit in the hovercar, sipping coffee. They’ve been parked on Fifth Street for hours, keeping an eye out for aliens trying to cross into the city.
“Bored yet, Rook?” Stardust asks.
“A little bit, sir,” Rook says.
Stardust sighs. “Police work isn’t all fighting criminals, unfortunately,” he says. “Sometimes, it’s sitting in a car for six hours to keep the city safe from aliens.”
“Yeah,” Rook says.
They sit in silence for a few more minutes. “Sir, if you don’t mind me leaving, I’d like to go use the restroom,” Rook says.
“You don’t need to tell me every time you take a shit, it’s weird,” Stardust says.
“Sorry,” Rook says, stepping out of the car.
Stardust taps his fingers on the steering wheel, bored out of his mind. He steps out of the car to stretch his legs. He walks away from the car, up to the painted blue line splitting Fifth Street in half, and stares at it.
The line is simultaneously everything and nothing. When the aliens came, when the sky split open, the Space Cops forced the invaders back into the lower wards of the city. They wanted to go further, to wipe the aliens out, but the politicians and the media had told them no, forced them to let the festering hoard stay in their city, growing in power and waiting for their moment to strike. The Space Cops painted an unbroken line on Fifth Street, a border that the aliens were forbidden from crossing. Guards were stationed, checkpoints set up, law restored. And, for a time, things were calm.
But, as time went on, and the wounds of the invasion began to heal, security loosened. The politicians balked at the idea of guarding the blue line 24/7 and slashed the cops’ budget. And then, last night, for the first time in years, an alien stepped across the blue line.
A clanging noise breaks Stardust from his thoughts. He draws his blaster and looks around, ready to fire. Something flies past his leg and he turns, trying to track it with his eye. He turns back to see an alien step over the blue line.
Bang. He pulls the trigger, he fires his blaster and shoots the alien. The invader crumples to the ground.
Stardust’s heart is beating a million times a minute. His breathing is heavy. Sweat pours down his forehead. He would never admit it, but he is terrified. He takes a deep breath and walks over to the alien to make sure it's dead.
He looks down at the alien lying before him. It lies in a pool of red blood, gasping for air. A charred hole sits in the center of its chest, created by Stardust’s blaster.
What surprises Stardust is how small the alien is. It’s only about four feet tall, with rounded features and big eyes. It’s a child. A little boy. He reminds Stardust of his own son so much it hurts.
Stardust glances over his shoulder and sees a rubber ball sitting on the ground. He begins to piece things together. The alien had been playing with his ball. It rolled over the line. He went to grab it. And Stardust shot him.
Stardust looks back at the dying alien. Tears are pooled around the alien’s eyes. For a moment, Stardust feels remorse. Then he snaps out of it.
He did this to himself! He stepped over the line, he broke the law. Rules exist for a reason, to keep people safe. The aliens stay in the poorer wards, that’s the law. It isn’t Stardust’s fault for enforcing the law.
And what was he doing, out at night? It’s like he wanted to die! For all Stardust knew, he was coming to kill him, to kill his family. Stardust was terrified!
Why couldn’t the aliens have just stayed on Earth and left the good people of Colony Six alone? They never asked for them to come, to flood their neighborhoods and destroy their culture. Six generations! That means something!
Stardust is an eagle. He protects people. He isn’t a hawk. He isn’t a monster. He’s an eagle. He isn’t a dove, doves get eaten. But he isn’t a killer. He kills killers. He’s a good man.
The dying child coughs and reaches out to Stardust. He stares at Stardust with his terrified eyes. Stardust places his foot on the boy’s throat and presses down. He feels the sound of the boy’s windpipe cracking, he hears the sound of blood vessels popping. He watches as the life leaves the boy’s eyes.
It isn’t hard, killing the boy. It’s easy. Because Stardust is a warrior.
“Sir?” Rook says.
Stardust’s head snaps back. Rook stands behind him, staring. Stardust doesn’t know how long he’s been there. He doesn’t care, not really. He notices that his gun is still in his hand and his foot is still on the dead child’s throat. He moves his foot. He doesn’t put the gun away.
Rook walks over to the murdered child and looks down at him. “Tsk, tsk, tsk,” he says, tapping with his teeth. “It’s a shame, sir, that they have to break our laws.”
Rook reaches into his pocket and pulls out the pocketknife. He carefully places it in the child’s limp hand. “Crossing the blue line and attacking a policeman with a knife? Absolutely horrible,” Rook says. “Good job, keeping our city safe from these vermin.”
+++
Stardust steps into his son's bedroom. It’s after midnight, and his son is fast asleep. He sits down on the bed and watches his son sleep. He’s reminded of what he fights for,
“Dad?” his son says. He’s barely awake.
“Go back to sleep,” Stardust says.
“How was work?”
“Good, I kept you safe,” Stardust says. He plants a kiss on his son’s forehead.
As he leaves his son’s bedroom, he places a rubber ball on his son’s dresser.

Pride and Perception - ch. 13
Hello, lovely readers! If you're still here after yet another prolonged hiatus that came without warning, you have truly earned stars in your crown because wowee it has been so long since I updated this fic! I am finishing up my Master's Thesis in library science over the next three weeks, and then I start working in October! I'm not going to make any promises about a regular posting schedule this time because I have no idea how busy I'll be in the upcoming months, but I can promise that I have not abandoned this fic, and I will be working on it as often as I can! So if you've stuck with me this long, if you've interacted in any way with this fic (especially in the last several months), this chapter is dedicated especially to you. Thank you for being here.
Read this story on my ao3!
Masterlist chapter 12 chapter 13 chapter 14
summary: James Barnes was the mob king of Brooklyn. Everything he wanted, he got, and anyone standing in his way was eliminated, but there was never enough evidence left behind to really convict him. He was not one to be trifled with and everybody knew it. Eveline Stone had only been the boss of Queens for six years, but that was more than enough time to know a bad deal when she saw one. If Barnes thought he could come in and buy her city or take it by force, he had another thing coming. He was the most infuriating man she’d ever met, but he was also probably the only person in New York who could help her find who she was looking for.
paring: Mob!Bucky x Mob!oc: Eveline Stone (can be read like a reader insert)
chapter warnings: interrogation (no violence), mentions of hostages, language
word count: 5,412
Thanks for Reading!
Directly following the interrogation, Bucky had gone back up to his office and sent out an email to the general managers of his hotels to warn them about the arson threat. He didn’t want to give them too much information — they had yet to determine the identity of the employee responsible for giving Rumlow the tip off — but he did include a rough description of Rumlow, the men who’d disappeared with him, and the two men they’d just interrogated. The email also included detailed instructions on how to perform a thorough search of the building and told his managers to be expecting a related email from Pepper within the next 48 hours of any suspicious patrons whose belongings should be searched.
He stayed seated at his desk for a moment after hitting send, as something Eveline had said to him from her hospital bed came back to him: It wasn’t that I lacked faith in your men, Bucky, only that I had greater faith in Brock’s manipulation. Looking back through the past month in which he’d known Eveline, Bucky could see all the ways her connection to Rumlow had affected her interactions with the world. Her fierce protection of her friends and family, her unwillingness to share anything personal, even her initial aversion to a simple meeting with him, all spoke to her history with broken trust. He mentally kicked himself for not seeing it sooner, but then again, he supposed Eveline hadn’t wanted him to see it. It made him all the more grateful for the renewing and rebuilding of their trust in each other.
That last thought reminded him that their now daily lunch plans had been interrupted by this interrogation. He quickly pulled out his phone and shot her a text.
Bucky: Hey did you ever get lunch?
Eveline: No, but I’m starved.
Bucky: Me too! You wanna grab something?
Even though this meal was one they shared nearly every day, nerves kicked his heart into overdrive as he sent the text.
Eveline: I’m with Lili for lunch today
Bucky’s heart dropped a little at her admission.
Eveline: but you’d be welcome to join us! Lili would love to see you too!
And just like that, it was back to skipping every other beat. Bucky shook his head. He couldn’t believe how worked up he allowed himself to get over this. It was just lunch, and yet, he couldn’t curb his smile as he quickly typed out a reply.
Bucky: Great! I’ll head that way!
Eveline: Perfect! We’re in the living room.
Without wasting another second, Bucky left his office. He walked through the familiar halls towards his home and did his best to calm his pounding heart. As he had several times since knowing Eveline, Bucky reminded himself that he was a powerful and dangerous man who did not get flustered over a woman, but the butterflies in his stomach paid him no mind. His thoughts continued to betray him the rest of the way to the living floor of the townhome, but the moment he entered the room to find Lili and Eveline — who had changed back into her comfy clothes — playing a game of go fish over a plate of chicken nuggets, his nerves evaporated. An overwhelming sense of right flooded his body at the sight of them so at home in his space.
“You better not be cheating again,” Lili accused with her best attempt at an intimidating glare.
Eveline gasped dramatically, holding her hand up over her heart. “I would never!”
Lili rolled her eyes at her mother’s tone and Bucky chuckled softly, drawing the young girl’s attention. As her eyes landed on him, they lit up, and Bucky felt his heart squeeze at the sight. She quickly set her cards face down on the coffee table, pointed her two fingers towards her own eyes and then at Eveline’s, before quickly making her way across the room to him, and Bucky swept the nine-year-old up into his arms.
“Bucky!” she cried as he swung her around.
“Hey, princess,” Bucky replied into her hair. He met Eveline’s gaze over Lili’s shoulder, and her subtle, pleased smile nearly knocked him over. Her gentle grin widened to make room for her amused chuckle as Lili struggled to wrap her small legs all the way around Bucky’s torso, kicking him in the ribs in the process. Bucky felt his heart expand in his chest when Lili pulled her head up off his shoulder and began telling him about how the first half of her school day had been as he made his way over to where Eveline had moved from the floor to the couch and sat down next to her all while trying to focus on what Lili was saying to him — a task which became increasingly difficult the longer Eveline kept looking at him like that. When Lili called his name exasperatedly, as if she had called him multiple times already, and Eveline laughed at him, Bucky shook his head and forced himself to give his undivided attention to Lili.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart. What did you say?”
Lili rolled her eyes and joined her mother in laughing at his expense. “I asked if you want to play go fish with us?” And no idea had ever sounded better to Bucky’s ears.
“I would be honored,” he replied with a dramatic bow of his head. She giggled and clapped her hands, and Bucky headed to the kitchen to make himself a sandwich before rejoining them on the floor around the coffee table.
They played a few games, most of which Lili won, and laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. Bucky did his best to memorize the way this moment felt: to be relaxing with these two girls who had come to mean so much to him, to be a normal man for an afternoon spent relaxing with family. He knew it was not an afternoon that would last forever, and after a few more games of go fish, Lili declared she was going to go play outside in the yard and instructed them sternly not to follow her. She gave Bucky a big, over-the-top wink, and headed for the door.
Eveline was chuckling to herself when Bucky came back into the living room after taking their dishes to the kitchen sink. “What on earth was that about?” she asked incredulously.
Bucky sat down beside her on the couch with a noncommittal shrug, refusing to give away Lili’s secret surprise.
Seeing right through his poorly hidden smile, Eveline narrowed her eyes at him accusingly. “You’re up to something,” she said. “I don’t know what she’s put you up to, but you should know I see everything,” she finished, copying Lili’s ‘I’m watching you’ motion from earlier, and Bucky laughed.
“She is something else,” he crooned, his gaze looking out the window where Lili was just out of sight, having gone down the steps of the fire escape to reach the side yard below. Suddenly, a memory from the meeting Eveline had missed flashed through Bucky’s mind: Whether or not he knows of Lili’s presence remains uncertain, Nat had said. His expression must have turned as grim as his thoughts, because Eveline leaned closer to him with concern.
“What is it, Bucky?”
He sighed deeply through his nose and relaxed his face slightly. “Does Rumlow know about her?” he asked darkly.
Eveline sat back, her expression sobering. “She’s not his, if that’s what you’re asking.”
Bucky flinched at the hurt in her tone. “Forgive me. I didn’t phrase that very well. Lili’s father is not my concern. Nat pointed out in our meeting a few weeks ago that Rumlow knows you’re in Brooklyn, but we have no clue if he know’s Lili’s here too.”
Understanding dawned in her eyes, and she nodded in thought. “It wouldn’t surprise me if he knows she exists. In fact, he probably does, given his connections, but,” she shrugged, her eyes pinned to the floor. “I’m not sure how much he knows regarding Lili’s presence here. I mean, it’s not like we went to any great lengths to keep her hidden away.” When Eveline met his eyes again, their earlier playfulness was completely gone. “If Rumlow wants to know where she is, he won’t have any trouble finding out.”
Bucky nodded, his mind puzzling. “The thing about this case that still completely confuses me is Pierce’s potential role in the whole thing.” Eveline hummed her agreement, her brow furrowed in thought. “I think Oliver’s death points pretty clearly to Pierce. I don’t know how familiar you are with his… style of discipline, but Oliver’s murder matches a string of others Pierce has doled out over the years.”
“What did you do with Kingston and Desmond?” she asked after a moment.
Bucky bristled at the mention of their names. “Just left them there, for now. Haven’t decided how their end will come to them yet.” Realizing how dark that sentence was, he expected to find fear or disgust in her face, but when he looked back, the only emotion on Eveline’s face was satisfaction. “And Tony kept the cameras running, so we’ll hear anything they say between now and then.”
As Eveline nodded, she went to reposition herself and hissed, reaching for her hip. All thoughts of the case suddenly left Bucky’s mind, replaced with a deep concern for her recovery. “How has PT been going this week?” he asked hesitantly.
She stretched her legs out in front of her and groaned a little. “It’s going fine,” she said quietly, continuing to stretch her lower limbs. “The progress has slowed down these last few days, but I’ll keep at it.”
“That’s what I’m worried about,” Bucky replied, resisting the urge to reach out and lift her chin so she’d meet his worried stare. “Are you getting enough rest?”
Sitting back against the couch, she huffed a sigh at him. “I’m sleeping fine, mom, are you and Natasha in cahoots again?” She asked the question in a playful tone of voice, but there was a genuine accusation in her eyes.
“I just want to be sure you’re taking care of yourself, doll,” he implored.
Before Eveline could scold him for the nickname, Lili’s nervous voice came calling through the open window, “MOMMA…?” Bucky and Eveline froze, eyes locked for the briefest of moments before they were both up and running to the door. “MOMMA!” Lili called again.
“I’m here, Lili. What’s wrong?” Eveline called, moving quickly down the stair into the yard towards her daughter. Bucky stayed up at the top of the fire escape and began scanning the surrounding area for any signs of danger. He couldn’t hear what it was Lili was saying into her mother’s neck, but he could see nothing in or outside of the yard, or on any of the surrounding streets. He continued to keep his eyes peeled, however, until Eveline and Lili had made it back inside. The two situated themselves on the couch, Eveline’s arms securely wrapped around her daughter’s shoulders, and Bucky moved to squat down to Lili’s eye level.
“Are you alright, sweetheart?” he asked softly. There were no tears in her eyes, which he took as a positive sign. She nodded her head, and Bucky took one of her small hands in his. “Would you like me to get you something to drink?”
“Can I have some chocolate milk, please?”
Bucky smiled warmly at her and replied, “of course you can. I’ll be right back,” and with a gentle squeeze of her hand, he headed for the kitchen. Upon returning with the beverage, he found Eveline turning the TV onto what he supposed was a show Lili enjoyed. He handed the girl her milk, and — after ensuring that she was settled comfortably to watch her show — Bucky grabbed Eveline and pulled her into the kitchen.
“What happened? Did she see something?”
Eveline crossed her arms and Bucky could tell by her sigh that she was trying to appear unaffected, but he could sense her unease beneath it. “She said a man was watching her from across the street.”
An intense wariness chilled Bucky’s bones at the notion of that little girl being watched. “Watching her?” he asked tightly.
“Keep your voice down. I don’t want her to hear you,” Eveline hissed at him. “She said it was the same man as last time—”
“Last time?!?”
“SHH!” Eveline’s gaze flicked worriedly over to the living room, but Lili was still blissfully watching the TV. “It happened a few weeks ago, and I was trying to come up with a way to tell you, but…”
She didn’t need to finish the thought. Bucky remembered the seemingly insurmountable tension that had been between them just last week. He sighed deeply through his nose. “Did you get any sort of description from her?”
Eveline shrugged. “Not much, just that he’s a man with dark brown hair and matching eyes.”
Their earlier conversation about Rumlow’s knowledge of Lili came back to his thoughts, and Bucky felt certain he had his answer. A grim fear settled at the base of his skull, and the look in Eveline’s eyes told him she knew exactly where his thoughts had turned.
“I don’t think Brock would be stupid enough to come this close, not when he knows we’re after him.”
“Probably not. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t send someone in his place.”
Eveline sighed and nodded, confirming that she’d feared the same thing. Bucky hated seeing that emotion in her eyes, but he hated that his home was no longer a place she felt safe even more. He’d failed to protect her once, he wouldn’t do so again.
“Maybe you should consider getting away for a bit,” he suggested in as calm a voice as he could. At the affronted expression that came over her face, he pressed on, “I know you’ve just started getting back into stuff, and I’m not trying to take you back out of it. I’m just saying, if we could find a way for you and Lili to disappear for a while, get you off Rumlow’s radar, you could continue work on the case, Lili would be safe, and it might force Rumlow’s hand and make it easier to find him.”
Eveline’s look of frustration melted into one of contemplation, and Bucky hoped she wouldn’t take his reasoning as overprotectiveness. He knew better than to attempt to whisk the two away from all dangers, but he couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to Lili.
After a moment, Eveline sighed and nodded. “I’ll think about it,” she consented, slowly moving her eyes back to his.
Bucky would take whatever he could get from her and nodded his acceptance. He held Eveline’s gaze for another few moments and did his best not to squirm, as she appeared to be appraising him. He didn’t know what it was she was looking for, and before he could ask if she’d found it, Lili’s voice called to them from the living room. They went in and finished their go fish tournament in time for Lili to finish her school day, and Bucky went back to his office to continue his work, but the fear that had pooled around his neck remained there for the rest of the day.
※ ※
The following morning, Eveline headed into the training gym to do her physical therapy exercises. Ignoring the sound of Bucky’s concerned voice in her head asking after her sleep the day before. It seemed Natasha wasn’t the only person who thought she was pushing too hard. She turned on the treadmill after completing her warmup stretches and started off at a slow pace. Given the family of training gyms she ran in Queens, Eveline knew all about rehabilitative training and the importance of pacing yourself, and felt she was qualified to monitor her own threshold.
A small part of her was touched that Bucky cared enough about her to notice the signs of physical burnout that she’d been ignoring, and say something to her about it. Their relationship had improved vastly in the week or so since their conversation on the roof. Eveline looked forward to their lunch dates and found herself thinking about him frequently throughout the day. They had exchanged phone numbers one afternoon when Lili had wanted to go hang out with Bucky, and they now remained in communication throughout the day. He would send her memes he came across that made him laugh — after having explained to her what a meme was — and Eveline would respond with the funniest thing Lili had said recently. It was a tentative friendship they were building with undertones of something more, and if she was being honest with herself, she didn’t really mind where it was going.
Eveline continued to move through the motions of her PT exercises, and her mind shifted as she did so. Thoughts of Bucky’s concerns for her recovery reminded her of his similar concerns for Lili yesterday. She was glad she had told him about the man now, not having intended to keep anything from him — especially not something as important as Lili’s safety and his home’s security. When they’d talked about it in the kitchen, Eveline had done her best to maintain a professional perspective, but the idea of someone watching her daughter was one that she found difficult to think objectively about, and if Brock had anything to do with it… She couldn’t finish the thought.
She moved from the elliptical to the stationary bike and contemplated the likelihood of Brock being behind Lili’s stalker — just using that noun made her sick to her stomach. For the life of her, Eveline couldn’t think of any way Brock could benefit from keeping tabs on her daughter. And for that matter, she couldn’t come up with a motive for any of his actions over the last month. The man had a job working for Pierce in Manhattan. Why on earth would he come to Brooklyn and get a job working for Bucky? Was it some kind of long game Pierce was playing? Eveline recalled her conversation with Bucky at lunch yesterday about Pierce’s potential involvement. That was the piece of the puzzle that was the most confusing, because if Brock was here doing all these things on Pierce’s orders, they needed to start considering what Pierce stood to gain from any of this.
Her attackers had said Brock wanted to start a mob war. New York hadn’t seen a real mob war in years, the various Mafia families having settled into their own territories to avoid further interference from the law. If there really were a mob war between Brooklyn and Queens, it might be true that any of the nearby mafia families could stand to benefit from their neighbor’s losses, but did Pierce really think gaining control of Brooklyn was worth risking something as big and messy as a mob war? Eveline didn’t think so. She knew Pierce, knew how he preferred to operate, and didn’t think he would risk such public scrutiny when he was running at the peak of his career. She agreed that Oliver’s death looked like Pierce’s work, but that didn’t necessarily link him to the rest of the case… did it? In the interrogation, Kingston had said Brock wanted to start a war, not Pierce, but could they trust his intel?
Eveline was so caught up in these thoughts that she didn’t notice Bucky had entered the gym until he came to stand in front of her bike. The look on his face had her slowing her pedaling to brace for whatever news he had to report.
She raised her eyebrows as he motioned for her to keep up her exercise. “You don’t have to stop, just listen.” He took his phone out of his pocket and began pulling something up. “You remember what Kingston said about Rumlow’s plan to set fire to my hotels?”
Eveline nodded, still a bit too winded for a verbal response. He turned his phone around to show her a video from the local news channel. The anchor was standing in front of Oliver’s hotel, and though she couldn’t hear what the woman was saying, she gathered from the three firetrucks and one ambulance on the scene that Kingston’s prediction had been more accurate than they had expected.
“There was a minor explosion in one of the 4th floor bathrooms,” Bucky explained — where the fire would be able to grow before the smoke alarm could detect anything, Eveline realized. Bucky’s face was grim as he continued. “All the news stations are reporting mob activity.”
The stationary bike beneath her beeped, signaling the end of her workout and the start of her cooldown. Eveline slowed the movement of her legs and attempted to take in deep breaths. A task made more challenging by the information she was struggling to process. Someone had triggered an explosion as an act of arson against Oliver’s hotel?
“Pepper’s been collecting a full report of the event. She wants us to meet in her office as soon as we can,” Bucky explained, putting his phone away.
Her movements having slowed to a stop, Eveline turned off the bike’s program, but remained seated where she was, taking slow breaths to calm her heart. “Do you think it’s connected to the plan Kingston was talking about?” she asked.
Bucky shrugged skeptically, “I was wondering the same thing, except…”
“It’s not one of your hotels,” Eveline finished, and he nodded.
“Which doesn’t really help Rumlow’s supposed goal of starting a war.”
Eveline agreed, but there was still something off about the attack. The fire had happened too soon after their interrogation of Brock’s men for it to feel like a coincidence, and with the news jumping immediately to mob activity? It wasn’t uncommon for the public to suspect the mob, but they usually only turned to that as a last resort.
Bucky’s phone dinged in the silence. “That’s Pepper. She’s ready for us,” he said, eyeing her position on the bike. Eveline hid her discomfort well, but she was sure he could still see the hesitation in her eyes at the prospect of maneuvering herself down off the bike so quickly. She’d had no trouble getting on or off the machine on her own since that first day, but she usually gave herself a bit more time to rest before maneuvering her sore hip up over the tall seat to disembark. When she still hadn’t moved, Bucky shot her a questioning look, and Eveline sighed resignedly before reaching her hand out in his direction.
Bucky did his best to conceal his amused chuckle and stepped closer, placing her outstretched hand on his shoulder and grabbing hold of her waist with one hand to steady her shaky limbs. Eveline relied on Bucky’s ridiculous upper body strength to stabilize her as she stood and shifted all of her weight onto one of the bike’s pedals. She tried really hard to focus on keeping her balance rather than the thick corded muscles of Bucky’s shoulder beneath her fingers, or the heat from his rough palm on her skin through her tank top. The soft words of encouragement coming from his lips certainly didn’t help, either. And honestly, what did the universe expect from her in her exhausted state when her senses were being assaulted by all things Bucky? As she swung her other leg over the seat of the bike, her toes caught and her body lurched forward.
Eveline would have hit the ground face first if Bucky hadn’t shifted in front of her and reached his other hand out to catch her, both of his hands now encircling her waist. “Woah, I gotcha,” he said in that same soft tone. His eyes lifted to hers and the gentle concern she found there stole her breath. Bucky held her suspended in the air, their faces mere inches apart, for only a few seconds longer before he breathed in sharply and took a small step back. Lifting her fully off of the bike, he placed her down beside him carefully, keeping one hand out to steady her for a moment before removing his hand from her side. Eveline felt the loss of that hand more than she’d expected and swayed forward slightly with his movement.
“Easy there, doll,” Bucky said in little more than a whisper, easily grabbing the hand she’d reached out for him.
Forcing herself to come back down to earth, Eveline found it within her to place her free hand on her hip and scowl lightly at him for the use of that endearment.
Bucky chuckled again and let go of her hand, which fell back to her side with a plop. He raised his arms in mock surrender with a sheepish look coming over his features as he stepped towards the gym door. “Sorry, Eveline,” he amended before gesturing that he would follow her towards Pepper’s office.
Eveline rolled her eyes dramatically before making her way to the door, calling on all her mental faculties to move at a controlled pace. She reminded herself why he had come to get her, and of the fire they were about to discuss, hoping to regain power over her wildly beating heart. It shouldn’t have been that easy for him to disarm her so thoroughly. It would have been faster to take the stairs up to the floor where Pepper’s office was, but given her body’s current state, Eveline opted for the elevator.
Thankfully, the closer they got to Pepper’s office, the tamer her thoughts became. She didn’t know what else Pepper could have found beyond what Bucky had already told her, but she knew it couldn’t be good if she had called a meeting to discuss it. The elevator doors opened, and Bucky followed her down the hall to Pepper’s office. Knocking once, Eveline opened the door and entered to find Steve and Pepper already talking.
“Sorry to have to interrupt your physical therapy, Eveline, but I appreciate you coming in. You’re really gonna want to see this,” Pepper said as Eveline took the seat next to Steve.
“I had just finished when Buck came to get me. It’s fine. What have you got?”
Turning one of her monitors to face them, Pepper began going through all the facts of the crime scene. Approximately three hours before, a small, remotely controllable explosive device detonated in the bathroom of room 406 at Oliver’s hotel. The explosion lit fire to the wallpaper, a pile of towels and clothes, and the shower curtain. And since the bathrooms do not have smoke detectors, these things were allowed to burn uninterrupted. The fire quickly consumed the wall between the bathroom and the adjoining bedroom as well, but someone had tampered with the smoke detector. After about 45 minutes, the blaze had grown large enough to burn through the wall into the hallway as well. Those smoke detectors did sound at that point, but, as police have found, all the sprinklers on that hall had been tampered with and did nothing to suppress the flames. The fire burned for around another 50 minutes before the fire department arrived and was able to put it out, but luckily, not much was damaged outside of the hotel rooms immediately surrounding room 406. Seeing as no one had been checked into any of the rooms in question, the police had been called in to investigate once the fire department deemed the area safe.
Eveline took in all this information with a frown. It didn’t seem like anybody knew much of anything about the situation yet. “And they haven’t examined the security footage for possible suspicious activity?” she asked.
“That’s the first problem: at some point last night, the security cameras were hijacked, and the live feed was replaced with older footage to cover it up,” Steve explained solemnly. “They have no way of knowing who even went to the fourth floor in the first place, let alone who might have nicked a master key to get into 406.”
“So they haven’t made any sort of statement?” Eveline asked.
Pepper gave her a worried look and pulled up a video from a local news channel of a policeman making a statement. “Without the use of security footage, we have had to resort, for the time being, to circumstantial evidence,” the officer stated. “We have conducted as thorough an examination of the room as was possible, given its condition, but most of the potentially useful evidence was burned away. We do, however, have one major lead.” The officer paused to pull a small evidence bag from his pocket to hold up to the camera. “This charm bracelet belonging to the current leader of the Queens mafia, Eveline Stone, was found on the scene. Miss Stone has notably been seen around the Brooklyn area for the last month, leading us to believe it is quite possible for her to have committed this crime.”
Eveline felt all the blood drain from her face. Even through the screen and the plastic of the evidence bag, she would recognize that bracelet anywhere. It had belonged to her mother, and Maggie had given it to her for her 20th birthday the year before she graduated college. She’d worn it almost daily during her final year at Cornell, but hadn’t put it on since before her time in Manhattan. Recently, Eveline had given the charm bracelet to her daughter for her ninth birthday. It was still too big for Lili’s wrist, so she had secured it around the neck of her favorite doll, like a necklace.
“Eveline,” Steve called softly, leaning forward from his seat next to her. “Is that your bracelet?” he asked, but Eveline only barely heard him. Her eyes were locked with Pepper’s, communicating silently about the significance of that bracelet having been found at the crime scene.
Pepper tilted her head forward, a single eyebrow raised in question. Was that bracelet inside this house? Eveline nodded her confirmation of Pepper’s fears. Her friend grimaced. Eveline posed a question with a sweep of her eyes around the room, but Pepper only shook her head. She knew nothing about who might be responsible. Pepper glanced decisively towards the door with her eyes, pointedly raising both eyebrows in a command, but Eveline shook her head at the idea of running away now.
“Eveline,” Pepper said with a commanding tone, “you know you can’t stay here.”
Steve looked back and forth between the two women, a confused look in his eyes. “Woah, woah what just happened here?” He turned back to Eveline. “Who said anything about you leaving town?”
Bucky moved from his place behind her chair and sank down beside her. “Eveline,” he placed his hand on her shoulder, “look at me.” She turned to meet his earnest gaze. “Where did they get the bracelet?”
She stared into his eyes for another moment before responding in a trembling voice, “Lili had put it on her doll as a necklace.” Fearful understanding dawned in his eyes as she finished, “It’s been in her room upstairs since we got here.”
Eveline watched, mesmerized, as a series of intense emotions rolled through his irises before finally landing on heated determination. “Eveline, if someone broke into Lili’s room without being detected, you know it’s not safe for her to stay here, especially not when someone has been keeping tabs on her.”
Eveline closed her eyes and dropped her head into her hands. She knew he and Pepper were right, and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her daughter, but simply running away from the problem didn’t sit right with her.
“And given that the Brooklyn police are on your ass now, it might not be a bad idea for you to disappear, either. Go off grid for a while,” Pepper encouraged. “Nat can stay here and be your representative, and keep you in the loop.”
“What can I even do?” Eveline asked, lowering her hands from her face. She couldn’t go back to Queens without confirming her guilt, but she didn’t have any safe houses established, and she refused to do anything that might put her mom or brother at risk. Feeling more helpless by the minute, she exclaimed, “I won’t just pack my daughter into the car and run away to god knows where”
Bucky held her worried gaze with a reassuring one of his own. “I’ll go with you,” he offered. Ignoring the expression on Steve and Pepper’s faces, he shrugged as casually as he could manage under the circumstances and said, “considering the mob angle the news stations are trying to spin, it would be good to negate any allegations that you’re attacking me.”
Feeling defeated, Eveline raised a doubtful eyebrow. “Where would we go?”
“We can go to my mom’s place on Long Island.”
“Bucky, I am not going to just drop in on your mother and put her at risk like that!”
He moved his touch from her shoulder to grab her hands in his own. “No, really, she’s one of my safe houses. It’s as close to off the grid as you can get in New York City, complete with a secure private entrance, and secure internet access thanks to Tony’s wi-fi security.” Bucky smiled and huffed a laugh. “And trust me, you don’t have to worry about putting my mom at risk. She’s the scariest person I know, and she’s been in much riskier situations, believe me.”
They sat in silence for a moment as Eveline looked around at her friends, old and new, and considered their argument. She supposed she hadn’t had much of a case to begin with and they had solutions for every excuse and counterpoint she presented. Realizing she’d lost the battle, Eveline slumped in her chair letting her head fall back, and for the first time since this whole mess started, she found herself blinking back tears because at the end of the day, it was her daughter’s safety on the line. She needed to get Lili out of Brooklyn, and Eveline had promised she’d never leave her daughter alone.
After a few more moments of negotiation, they agreed that Bucky, Eveline, and Lili would go for a week to Long Island with and stay with Bucky’s mom. Lili would still be able to keep up with her schoolwork, Eveline could continue with her PT and stay involved with the case, and Bucky could help his mom with various projects around the house she’d been waiting to get to until he came to see her next.
Bucky went over all the safety and privacy features of the home that qualified it as a safe house, and by the time he was finished, Eveline felt better about the whole thing. They decided to leave first thing the next morning to encounter the least amount of traffic and get settled in before Lili’s first class would start.
The meeting concluded, Bucky walked Eveline back to her room. Neither one of them said much on the way. Her mind consumed with thoughts of someone snooping through her daughter’s things while no one was there. It was that image that had finally convinced her to agree and leave town. Eveline could put up with a lot, but she drew the line at her daughter’s safety and wellbeing. Bucky left her at her door with the promise to come by later so they could discuss departure plans. The rest of the afternoon went by in a daze. Eveline informed Lili about their trip at lunch and finalized their plans with Bucky after dinner. She helped her daughter to pack before putting her to bed and then turned in for the night. Even knowing they had an early wake-up call in the morning, she struggled to fall asleep that night, her mind still spinning with thoughts of stalkers and arson. Eveline felt confident she was making the right choice for her daughter, but she couldn’t help but feel like they were playing right into Brock’s hands.

Music for Deaf People
Wowee, the second year of my university life has definitely been eventful. Pretty much every assignment this year has been horrendous and honestly quite draining, but of course, there is one obvious exception which has completely saved my motivation and willpower to complete this degree.
Subwoofers seemed like an attainable but daunting goal when we first heard about it; since Winterland 2016 (remember that fun-filled experience?), in the first year, we were prepared to fill the concourse at the uni again with fun and interesting rides and attractions to bring in people from all around Wycombe. So when our lectures told us the success of Winterland had prompted a local charity, with a 23 Acre grass field, to try putting on their own music festival, and that they wanted us to work with them to make this the biggest event they’ve done yet.
What?
Winterland wasn’t the stressful failure I thought it was? External parties wanted to use our event management skills with their resources to put on another event? woo-wee.
So I've spoken on this all before but we were put into the four main management teams: Logistics, production, Talent and marketing. I started in logistics but was moved to help liaise with the Talent team and the stage manager and was eventually fully inducted into the production team and for the last few weeks leading up to the event I had become the second stage manager and had to make sure that everything was going to run smoothly within that department. really a lot of the work for the second stage had already been done and I was simply making sure that people still had the right information, such as the most updated versions of the stage times and besides that, I was helping other productions members, in whatever way I could.
(Subwoofers flyer)
SUBWOOFERS 2018 was amazing, it was easily my favourite assignment of the year; there were so few problems on the day and the sun was absolutely beaming. The expected stress was about in the morning, as still, some jobs had to be done from the day before, signs were to go up, traders and a few rides were still to arrive. And a most recent addition, 300 deck chairs had to be unloaded in front of the stage. I managed to arrive 15 minutes late as I woke up at 6:59AM and missed the coach at 7 and had to leap into a taxi.
So upon arriving we were quickly given jobs based on what still needed most urgently doing, regardless of their roles in the teams, (i’ll get back to this later buts it’s important) and the rest of the set up was fairly quickly done, which was good as the attendees were starting to arrive and the site was soon to open. deck chairs got unloaded, Herace fencing went up, queue systems were built, and then re-built as sections of ped barrier were stolen to quarantine the main stage and front-of-house booth. The only photo I have of myself on site is me helping the logistics team leader trying to put those really dodgy signs together, you know, those ones that have been around since bucks live was conceived? Those things are in dire condition...
(Oh look, it's me wow)
Being the second stage manager was probably the easiest thing I've done in my academic life. A quick comparison to Winterland here; when I was managing the second stage 1.5 years ago I overestimated my own knowledge and realised that I had severely over advertised myself, there were loads of things I hadn’t considered and had to make quick solutions. It was all very messy.
This time around though, I had at first decided to avoid production on this event, and see what I could do for the logistics team. However, things went as they did and I got pulled in by the “Production Gals” to sort out backline stuff and see that the second stage was up and running on time. Since Winterland, it was obvious that I had somewhat of a better idea of what would need to happen to make sure my stage would be a success.
There was one problem with this. The production team were too good. Every time I had an idea, a suggestion or a question that I thought hadn’t had much thought to it, I’d have about 4 people reassure me in harmony, about what has been done and how I shouldn’t have to worry about that specific aspect. Every time I was worried about something I’d simply mention it and my fears would be washed away by this angelic production choir. (Adrienne, the main stage manager, said “Don’t worry, we got this Michael” literally 3 times every meeting) My stage had a tent, power, all necessary backline, PA equipment and a flipping engineer before I even knew I was running it.
The day went so quickly I barely noticed, I had to make sure that my stage was on time with all its acts and there were no major disturbances to the lineup. In reality, about 80% of my stages’ artists either started or finished late, but due to the wonderful inexperience of the talent and production teams (in relation to solo artists), myself and the delegated engineer decided that the 20 minute changeover times were ludicrously overestimated and that we could be “flexible as fuck” with this lineup. this worked out nicely, and my stage stopped playing music before curfew, just for the record.
(Jack Little performing on the second stage at Subwoofers)
The biggest problem I faced all day was making sure artists got to the stage on time, I was constantly using the radio to contact the production office and see if the artists had arrived on site and that they were ready to be at my stage when needed. some artists made their own way and others couldn’t be found in time, but because the lineup was as flexible it was almost not an issue.
Dan was late, by the way.
The only artist who was also in our class turned up 10 minutes late for the only set he had been booked into; although it didn’t really matter because he could have almost doubled his set time without infringing on the artist following him. No one seems to know what he was doing when he was asked after, but he seemed to enjoy his stroll for about 100 yards across the main field before he arrived at my tent. He put on a good show though when he did go on. Everyone enjoyed Dan the Guitar.
The day rounded up quietly, my stage stopped playing music at exactly 5:40pm and we had a soft close up till 6pm, as I asked a nearby steward to close up the side of the tent one by one, encouraging people to leave. After a quick sweep of the tent for litter, I set the engineer free from my control and allowed him to de-construct all his equipment and pack it all down. I went back to the life of odd jobs, trading 21mm spanners with people and chatting back and forth on the radio helping find lost event staff and going on suntan lotion runs.
(Bucks Live Lettering)
Overall the day was pretty breezy, it went a LOT better than I ever expected it to, this being because there were many small and recurring problems leading up to the day as well as assumed bad reception by the public. Now the marketing team inevitably did a good job, and it can’t be denied that the sunny weather had a part to play in our turn out, but I was still sure that there were going to be quarrels and arguments between everyone, but it just didn’t happen. It was kushty, to say the least.

❧ l.wz | assassin!au
pairing; seventeen woozi x reader
genre; bulletpointed, assassin!jihoon, fluff
collab with; @kpop–fics
tags; @lunarjihoon
who would have thought
that this smol, cute human bean
would have so much pent up anger inside of him
everyone tbh
but besides that!
he is a very skilled hacker
one time
he even managed to hack the president’s computer
and
what he found on there
,,,
let’s just say it was a very informative evening
he didn’t remove or change anything on there though, he didn’t need to
he was just ,,,,,, inquisitive
and he didn’t leave a trace of his being there too so haha all’s good
and of course
it didn’t go unnoticed jihoon was so skilled with computers
he even took on a major in algorithms
you know ,,, so it’d be less evident that he’s doing all the illegal shitz lmao
not everyone possesses such skills at such a young age
everyone would question him if he had taken another course
sO!
he got recruited to this team
full of dorks
seventeen teen teen teeeen
tbh he was so surprised when he got there
not even ONE person,,,
new how to properly hack
like
???
what kind of assassins are you guys? amateurs?
but the only thing he was good at was technology so
he shouldn’t be the one to talk HAHA
anyway
he could work with them very well very soon
if it wasn’t for seokmin or seungkwan screaming through headquarters at those times when he was ‘working’
those two were noisiest of the group
you just want to,,,
hit them in the head with a guitar, you know?
but back to the story
he got a mission to hack the cameras from the ministry of defence
things were,,, shady?
and apparently someone in there was bribing everyone and thus no one’s doing their job properly
like
the money they got to take care of the city
actually the whole country
just?
disappeared?
to nowhere?
that can’t be good
but
jihoon’s teammates were already on another important mission
something about a drug dealer idek
so jihoon had to do it alone
the killing too :”)) which was necessary
bc the drug dealer is indirectly killing hundreds SO
but honestly
it annoyed him so dAMN MUCH
he wasn’t one to kill?
he just hacked stuff
he’d feel way too guilty
sticking a knife through someone’s body and leaving them there to bleed
or shooting someone and watching them writhe in pain
o h g o d
but orders were orders
so he had to do it anyways
nd with that
he left the building with one small pocket knife
seungcheol had said it would do bc “the target is weak and frail and small”
and jihoon had narrowed his eyes like
small? are u sure ?
i’m small too ???
and jihoon had no experience with killing
at all
he’s in big trouble lmao
you’d think a hacker would think twice about that stuff
apparently not
and
when he got to the building
he finally realized
“damn how am i gonna do this”
whatever
he’d try anyways
it’s not like much could go wrong, right? ,,,
just walk in there and stab him!
that’s it!
you’ve seen seungcheol and the rest do it on camera jihoon it’s no biggie
he was very VERY wrong about that
because
at the same time
you, a fellow assassin
had received a mission to take out an office worker who was suspected of rape
and he worked in the same office as where jihoon’s target was lmao
how coincidental
you were much better equipped, though
target in sight with your sniper set up on the opposite roof
shooting in 3… 2… 1…
SHIT
you missed your target!!!!
and hit someone else !!!!!
“wHO IS THAT AND WHY IS HE IN MY WAY”
the bullet had shot through the window jihoon was walking past and grazed his upper arm
he winced and fell from the shock, grabbing his arm and blood started flowing wowee
and everyone started gathering around him to help him omg and jihoon was freaking out like fuckfuckfuck i’m supposed to be undercover
in the end jihoon called seungcheol bc what else was he supposed to do ???
who rushed over nd brought him to the hospital for stitches
yeah jihoon’s pain tolerance is quite ,,, good ,,,
but he had sooo many questions in his head
why would anyone shoot him???
no one knows of his identity
but!
he immediately got back to headquarters and hacked the cameras
thank god for that invention
and he saw your face clearly in one of the shots
yes the roof had cameras and you didn’t know lololol
and fortunately,, jihoon removed the clip from the cctv storage bc he wasn’t gonna let you be found out by the police
he wanted to get back @ you himself
anyways
so from that day on
you’d think
it became a sort of cat and mouse game
of who can take out their target first???
you and him met actually
but just stared @ each other before walking past
like nope i didnt see you i dont know you
and
weirdly
it became this sort of,,, alliance?
he hacked cameras while you took out people
you never figured out who was doing it
you would just see the camera’s little red light fade off and you could walk past everywhere without a single alarm going off
it made things sooOO much easier really
and after every mission
you’d wave to the camera
cause you knew the person who was watching was definitely helping you
and a while later,,, jihoon follows the team to a mission
he wasn’t really doing anything
he was just,,, tagging along
and he met you
!!!!
face to face
finally
but you don’t recognize him of course
and your guards were soooo high up when he approached u
and he told u about the cameras
and specified scenes of your work to prove to you that he was the one behind the camera hacking
and you were like !!!!!!!! hi friend !!!
you 2 became friends can you believe
and jihoon would always save cctv clips of you from his computer and then put it in slow-mo
to emphasise the seriousness you have on your face when you’re carrying out your plans
it was funny
and cute

Read these great testimonials coming in from new listeners: "This is so brilliant! Thanks Jimmy!!" - Amy "Wowee zowee!! Just listened for the first time to the new mp3 Your Creative Spark and it is incredible! Only time will show how powerful this will be but already I can feel a big shift from being very stuck, stunted brain fogged etc etc to cool calm and clear. And even hopeful that the creative spirit is not dead yet ha ha. After months of lockdown in a care situation with elderly folk and being pretty much removed from all spacious and creative thinking :))) this comes as a breath of fresh air, or should I say Spirit Air! I am so looking forward to playing this over and over again! Thank you so much we are indeed very lucky to have you in our universe! You blessed us with a safe and calm pandemic experience with the Transcending Covid audio and now this!! Thank so much. May you continue to create in a wonderful way!" - R. Sayer
....PS. "It is indeed very powerful and seems to go through those underlying deep belief patterns that I dont even know are there. Thanks again really appreciate all the time and energy you give everyone constantly." "Please tell Jimmy that the "creative" shift that happened for me after just one listening is to "create" a life I love. I was blocked on creating "life." Yeah for the healing shift!" - Eileen

Who Movie Viewing #1009 and Thoughts
This got so much longer than I expected. Good.
-The opening of the film, with the music and the graphics and the voiceover and the logo... it’s just so incredible. It always gets me hyped and I unironically love it to death.
- “It was a request they should never have granted.” Did Eight really try to blame the Daleks right then. They did... the least... in this entire film... Doctor you just made a deal with the Daleks and the Master at the same time...
- “I was finally beginning to realise that you could never be too careful.” That is never gonna happen.
-Can you believe that I almost forgot how beautiful the gothic Tardis is???????? Don’t worry tho, my love has been reignited now.
-Lee is looking beautiful tonight.
- “Is he rich? Cause where we’re going he better be rich.” Ah yes, this is one of those eps where they go to a dystopian human colony. This time its called America and has awful health care
-The shot of running down the hospital corridor in full ballgown with opera over the top is one of my favourite things ever and is also the most iconic thing I’ll ever see.
-Grace is looking beautiful tonight.
-Brian is such a dick. @Grace dump him.
-Sylvester McCoy literally spent half his time in the film lying down playing dead.
-I haaate gratuitous operation/hospital scenes, and this is horrible, and the fact that I still like this movie so much is amazing.
-Who decided the goo snake was a good idea because its so freaking weird and i do not like it. They should have just made it Crispy crawling around. Then again if I had to watch Crispy crawl into Bruce I would die right here and now.
-Here’s my boy. Eight is looking beautiful tonight.
-The first words anyone spoke to my beautiful boy; “Oh my God. GOD NO!” @the universe, what is your damage
-omg for some reason I’m not sure I had ever noticed Eight was humming to himself before???? As he shambles around the hospital. Is it the same music he heard when he died?? That would make sense
-Eight is literally the most pure and innocent person to ever appear on film??and all I want in my life is for someone to wrap him in warm clothes and love him.
-What does he even do all night?? Does he go Tenth Doctor-esque catatonic?? In the middle of a soaking wet, shattered glass-littered abandoned hospital wing????? I REPEAT: SOMEBODY GIVE MY BOY A HUG AND SOME LOVE
-The dramatic music when Eight picks up the Nixon mask gets me every time. AU where he bonds with it and wears it as part of his outfit, and everywhere he goes people assume he’s a serial killer.
- “What would you like me to call you then?” “Master will do.” Bruce’s wife does not deserve to be kinkshamed in her own home, so I’m going to kinkshame the Master instead who absolutely deserves it, no matter where the fugk he is, for choosing the name in the first place.
-Underrated Gem from the Movie #78001; *Pete is freaked out after having freaked out because he saw the Doctor come back to life* Pete: Y’know what? I’m going home. Grace: Hey Pete, stop off at a psychiatric and pick up more mind-altering drugs. Pete: *completely serious* okay sure. Grace: *looks incredibly concerned*
-I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again; Eight’s outfit looks so comfortable. I want it.
-What the heck is with the guy just glaring at Eight in the hospital waiting room. What is his damage.
-This hospital guy is is crazy, burning all the evidence so that the operation never happened... he’s straight up gonna kill all of those visitors who watched it. This is an episode of CSI in the making.
- “You’re tired of life but afraid of dying.” Eight you’re like 8 hours old, no one gave you the right to be this Real.
-Eight covering his ears when Grace shouts at him is still the cutest thing ever
-What was that one post that was like “Brian took the couch but not his shoes??” because big mood
-Eight and Grace are drop-dead gorgeous in the scene in Grace’s house.
-The Doctor’s apparent ability to know everyone’s future is something added to the movie that’s just as odd and out-of-keeping with the rest of the show as the “half-human” line. One of the EDAs mention that Eight has a special gift to see people’s timelines and stuff that’s unique to this regeneration or something? That’s pretty neat.
-The Master being in the TARDIS when Lee enters means that (a) he knows the Doctor so well that he knows where the spare key is (and had to get a box or hypnotise a passer-by to help him reach it) or (b) while Lee did that quick stunned walk around the outside, he bolted in and played it cool when Lee came back in. Either option is kinda hilarious to me
- “It took me a while with the walking and the talking” Same.
- Lee is looking incredible in this Tardis scene.
-Eight when he gets excited is the cutest thing ever.
-JKLDSJCOSDIVDSCJO The most underappreciated part of the “THESE SHOES” joke is that Grace stares right at the camera like she’s in the Office
-I love the conversation Lee and El Maestro have when they stick their heads in the holes in the Tardis pillars cause that’s a great use of set??? It is literally a crime that this set was never used again and I want an exact copy as my new bedroom.
-In case someone doesn’t know, according to the EDAs the bats in the Tardis are called Jasper and Stewart and they’re twins and adorable.
-So do all ambulance medics look like the Terminator in America or
-Has anyone else read the Wife in Space blog, because the TV Movie one has the line “is the Eye of Harmony making it rain chickens” and honestly #iconic
- “I can’t make your dream come true forever but I can make it come true today!” Like my favourite line in the movie.
-So the Master and Lee don’t do anything while Grace and Eight get the bike. The Master’s like “Scuse me, I gotta wipe this fire extinguisher guff off. You follow them.” and Lee is like “sure bro, just gotta wait for this traffic.
-Talking of #iconic, the music in The Chase.
- “I wish I had my sonic screwdriver” “What?!” Doctor please stop throwing scifi terms at poor Grace.
- “I told you it was small.” “What is it they say?” “Yeah they say that on my planet too.” I can guarantee you that poor Ace Eight does not have a single clue what Grace actually means.
-So the Master just throws up over everyone now huh. That’s his gameplan now huh. Someone please put him out of our misery.
-We’re back in the Tardis and, Those angles..... That lighting........
-Have I mentioned that I love Eight’s hair yet? Because I love Eight’s hair. Also it’s kind of red in some shots and kind of not in others?? idk
- “We haven’t got any time to waste.” “But time to change!” SPEAKING OF ICONIC; “I always” *snap to close up* “Drezzzzzzzzz, for the occasion.”
-Eight: Lee, this is my Tardis. This is my Eye and I'm in my own body! Master: *the fakest laugh I have ever seen* I’m sorry Lee but how did you ever fall for the Master’s lies.
- “In 700 years no one has managed to open the Eye. How did you do it?” I mean, the last person to open the Eye was probably the Master as well? In the Deadly Assassin? (another face wowee. Just goes to show; to enjoy Dr Who all you gotta do is ignore the logic and “science”)
- “What do you mean it won’t work?” *scientist shrugs* Mood.
- “WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF LAST CHANCES” “MORE THAN YOU” I looove the camera shots for those lines, with both of their faces n stuff.
-Lee: YOU LIED TO ME! Master: I can’t believe... my own son...
-Just How Necessary Was The Master / Grace Kiss Exactly 2k17
- “I’M BLIND!” (Oxygen, 2017)
-Grace just saved the planet by hotwiring an alien time machine she has spent 2 minutes on... when will your fave ever
-This climax never has and never will make any sense, but it sure is editted nicely! Very dramatic.
- “What’s a temporal orbit!” Same
-Eight, calmly: Your life force is dying, Master. The Master, the most dramatic shit you’ll ever meet: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-Omg where is that post of just Eight’s leg. Because #iconic
- “You’ve both been somewhere I’ve never been” Doctor you were dead exactly one (1) day ago.
-Grace, Lee and Eight are such a beautiful Tardis team, and between the “I definitely wouldn’t live through that again” scene and the final goodbye scene, they absolutely go on a bunch of adventures together.
-Lee could 100% have just walked away with that gold and Eight obviously wouldn’t have stopped him. But he chose to offer it back to him,, when will your fave
- “See you round Grace!” I bet Lee goes to meet up with Grace again and acts like they’ve been through a lot together, and Grace very quickly cycles from “yes we have” to “wait you straight up tried to get me killed” to “why do you even want to talk to me” to “okay wait I have no one to talk to about this, you can stay”
- “Thank you Doctor.” “No thank You doctor.” What a couple of precious cuties. btw they’re both looking gorgeous and beautiful in this scene, and so was Lee. Just in case you were wondering.

[SF] Buck Stardust, Space Cop!
+++
+++
+++
+++
+++
+++
+++
+++

Food, Coffee, More Coffee: Inside the Spending Habits of a Working Student
I don’t think my spending habits are too bad, but I do have my slip-ups. This year, I’ve been pretty good at keeping my spending in check, but we’ll see how that progresses/devolves as the holidays draw closer. I do know that, day to day, most of my money goes to food and coffee. Although I often eat at home — I love making breakfast and try to have either lunch or dinner at home every day too — it still has a way of adding up.
Also, I guess I should mention that I work at Man Repeller AND am finishing up my BFA at the School of Visual Arts, which means I require a good amount of coffee just to keep me alive and kickin’. It also means I’m trying to balance a budget that accommodates both work and school. On most Thursdays and Fridays, I’m home finishing up assignments, cleaning and generally relaxing (which helps me save), but this week was different, and my budget took a hit as a result. You’ll see what I mean. With that, here’s what I spent my money on this week.
Today, my friend Maria and I are taking a day trip to Storm King Art Center, wahoo! Before I leave, I run downstairs and redeem my free, medium-sized beverage from Think Coffee thanks to my loyalty points. (Funny story: My loyalty account is for some reason linked to my cousin’s phone number, so she gets all my receipts. Hi Jaime! She likes knowing how my week is going. Large coffees = rough week.)
There’s only one food option at Storm King so I get an above-average vegetarian chili and a decent chocolate chip cookie. After our shenanigans upstate, we part ways and I come home and make pasta for dinner because wowee, I am so hungry. At 9:45 p.m. I run (okay, fine, walk) to CVS and buy Tide Pods because I already committed to doing my laundry and, surprise!, had no detergent left.
I usually walk to work, but this morning I wake up late and can’t figure out what to wear (UGH) so I have to take the subway. I put $20 on my Metrocard for this trip plus future use. I study photography and primarily use film for my personal work, so I drop off a roll of film that I took yesterday at Storm King. Thankfully, I save a couple of dollars by just getting it processed and scanning it myself at school. My buddies at Two Hands bless my wallet and give me a discount on my coffee and don’t charge me for my 3 p.m. orange juice. I get home from work pretty late so I spend the rest of my night watching YouTube videos and eating leftover pasta. SO fun.
Another exciting day at work! Pretty sure I was still tired from my day trip to Storm King and finishing up all the props for the MR GIFT GUIDE (!!!!) so I had two coffees today. This is why I am good friends with the people at Two Hands: a minimum of two visits a day builds a strong relationship. Then, Madi tricks me into getting lunch with her at Sweetgreen, but then bails to By Chloe, so I am stuck eating yet another Harvest Bowl alone (add avocado, no cheese, swap almonds for pecans, tysm). After work, I have one too many alcoholic beverages and plenty of mini snacks at the MR Ralph Lauren event. I mistakenly think that means I’m set on dinner but, 30 minutes after, when I start scanning film at school, I feel hungry again.
When I finally get home, I whip up a gourmet meal (toast and butter) for dinner and then realize that I left MY ONLY USB CABLE in the office and so, while my phone is slowly dying , I decide to get one on Amazon. (Another funny story: I thought, “Hey, maybe I should buy an extra USB cable” while walking past the Apple store that evening on the way back from the event but didn’t buy it!)
Today the water is out on Mott St. (where the MR office is located) and so my beloved Two Hands is closed (honestly they just need to #sponsor me at this point), so I get a coffee from Cafe Grumpy instead. Good thing I have a loyalty card going there too! I also get more film processed, woohoo! I decide to go to Maman for lunch today because I just really need a sandwich. Then, Emily and I stay pretty late at work finishing up the gift guide but I still manage to make yet another bowl of pasta for dinner when I get home (I’m having a phase).
TWO HANDS IS STILL CLOSED BECAUSE THE WATER IS STILL OUT! Cafe Grumpy it is. I usually don’t work on Thursdays but we had to finish wrapping up the final gift guide shoot. I make it back home in time for some lunch before class so I whip myself up some eggs on toast and then head to school. I spend three hours talking about photographs with my thesis class and then have a nice dinner with my friends at Goemon Curry! (PSA: they have cutlery that looks like little rakes and shovels.) I head back to work for a little bit after that to finish up random bits and bobs and then come home and sleep like a baby for the next couple of hours….
….Before I wake up late for a shoot happening this morning, ACK! I didn’t have time for breakfast so I run to Irving Farm to redeem my free coffee and get a croissant. I didn’t have time for lunch before going to class so I grab a brownie and another coffee during break so my stomach stops making weird noises in class. Usually I don’t do anything on Fridays because I prefer to chill at home and eat MORE pasta but tonight is different because it’s my friend Margo’s birthday and we celebrate with beers! A friend and I have a pre-celebration dinner at Big Daddy’s which includes a very delicious veggie burger and sweet potato tots. 10/10 would recommend.
HAPPY SATURDAY! I spend the first half of the day at home cleaning my apartment and having lunch before going to Chillhouse for a manicure. Before heading in I wander around Soho and am, of course, hankering for a snack and so I, of course, go to Two Hands, because I gotta stay loyal. This is actually the first manicure I’ve ever gotten in New York since moving here 3.5 years ago. It was a very long and stressful week so I decided to treat myself to some pretty nails since I don’t think I will have to paint anything in awhile (fingers crossed) (don’t look at me Emily).
While in the area, I pop over to Top Hat and buy some presents for friends and myself because Christmas is near! And you know who likes gifts? Me. Also my friends! But mostly me. On my way home I make more exciting purchases at the supermarket. Grocery haul you say? NO PROBLEMO! I got bananas, sparkling water, pasta sauce, pasta and a bottle of blood orange juice and kombucha.
BAM! DONE! Money spent! Honestly this week has just been a documentation of how many times I go to Two Hands in a week and also how much coffee I consume, which isn’t usually this much, I promise. I actually don’t feel that bad about the money I spent because I had a great week and I did a couple of special things like go to Storm King and get a manicure, but I do want to keep working on my spending habits.
For now I’m just gonna sit back, relax, and wait for my mother to make a comment about how much caffeine I drink.
