ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL!!
I haven't slept in so long...I forgot what dreams were like.
Honestly - what better way could there be for me to celebrate the 365th main post on the blog, than to be fashionably late by a whole weekend? It's unfortunate, but...oddly befitting, really. Back when I was first starting out with the blog, I actually forgot about posting daily for a solid two weeks - and so, some old-ass posts like Chillin’ Like A Villain and (YTPMV) Bob-Omb Battlesources were made in quite a hurry retroactively. Nevertheless, it was on May 17th 2023, over on my main blog @melblur, that I suddenly decided that I wanted to write about one SiIvaGunner rip a day just for fun. After File Select Fusion Collab, I realized that it made more sense just to put these on their own blog, and with Snowball Park - Super Mario 3D World I moved everything onto here. It's all been a bit of a bumpy ride, is my point. But today, I've reached the big milestone that I was originally aiming for all the way back with Running Through Cookie Country - a year's worth of almost-always-daily posts on the weird and wonderful world of SiIvaGunner. And what better rip to discuss alongside this milestone than the channel's biggest hit, the milestone rip to stand above all others: Season 1's Athletic Doctor.
Now, I've been following SiIvaGunner since some of the earliest moments of Season 1, following along with the initial GiIvaSunner termination, the entire Reboot saga discussed in I Saw a Brainwasher Today, the Mashup Crusaders arc of Mr. Rental [B Side] ~ Out of Options, the channel ending of Epic Flintstones... Basically, I was there for just about the entire initial 9-month run, and have with but one Season's worth of an exception (Season 5) been following the channel damn near obsessively since. The point is that, through this, I have been able to follow the channel's most popular videos chart up and down with each passing month: I recall, for instance, how Nintendo GameCube Startup - Console/BIOS Music soared past all other rips back in the day and stayed on top for five month's time. That was, of course, before finally being surpassed by we are number one but with outdated memes over it and subsequently helping kickstart the entire We Are Number One meme trend (funny enough - you can actually find a youtube comment left by me on the rip in late December 2016/early 2017 expressing mild annoyance over the rip's popularity...). Athletic Doctor in comparison was of course always popular, but it took a while to truly climb its way up there - it was in the top ten, then top five, always rising, bubbling in the background. Eventually, starting with Season 3's premiere, the team decided to just make the rip the trailer for the channel for new viewers - where it still sits today, now as the far-and-away most popular rip on the channel.
I feel like the reason the rip became used as the defacto channel trailer, the reason it keeps being referenced in videos demonstrating what SiIvaGunner is all about, is pretty obvious. I've talked a lot in posts like Live and Ooooooooooooooh about how outright *effective* many of Season 1's rips were, and Athletic Doctor is the most prime example of that imaginable - it is a damn near pitch perfect joke executed shockingly well for the time of its upload in the channel's history. EVERYONE knows the music to Super Mario World, either through its usage in the game itself in the 90s, its appearances in games like Super Smash Bros. Melee in the 2000s and Super Mario Galaxy 2 in the 2010s - or just through sheer overexposure to it in just about any era of gaming YouTube. The game's soundtrack is the perfect blend of being immediately recognizable and incredibly easy to hum along to given the entire game basically only has three or so melodies, relying on its central leitmotif to a degree bordering on parody. Likewise as well, EVERYBODY knows Witch Doctor, either through excessive radio play, being a big hit with Alvin & the Chipmunks...or the 2007 Live Action Alvin & the Chipmunks movie that I myself grew up with, it's the kind of vaguely obnoxious (also arguably quite racist) nonsense novelty music that's incredibly appealing to young kids, the same way something like Crazy Frog or its ilk was in the 2000s as well.
Put simply, Athletic Doctor was a match made in heaven - and the joke is pulled off so expertly that it feels redundant to put into words. The Athletic Theme intro is iconic enough to where you're led into a false sense of security right off the bat, the melody swap is subtle enough as to not immediately be noticeable, making the moment you notice it even more noteworthy - only for the track's second loop to become a full-on mashup with the Witch Doctor track. Absolutely perfect escalation, just the right amount of buildup - but most importantly, it ends up actually sounding really good! The joke's great to be sure, very much like Live and Ooooooooooooooh - but I feel like the core reason why Athletic Doctor has continued to endure for so long on the channel, why it keeps getting remixed and referenced and paid tribute to on so many instances, is because it's just a genuinely good listen once the joke sets in. In other words, it is the purest distillation of SiIvaGunner's appeal - a joke so simple, yet pulled off with a magical appeal that remains even all these years later.
Through running this blog, it's that very specific appeal that I've wanted to try and encapsulate with the rips I cover, with what I write about them, to uncover that elusive magic of this dumb shitpost channel. Joel's big Grand Dad reaction that kicked the channel off is a good bit, to be sure, but its not a bit that could've lasted eight years and counting: In its earliest days, its easy to see how the channel could've just become naught but a novelty and fallen off the face off the earth once interest in it died. Yet through each year of the channel's life, with every Season that passes, it's evolved and adapted. Be it the spontaneous chaos of Season 1, the building storyline of Season 2, the mystery and nostalgia of Season 3, the sheer talent on display in the King for Another Day Tournament in Season 4 Episode 1 and the sheer joy of celebration found in Season 4 Episode 2, the whimsical experimentation of Season 5, the sudden introspection and moodiness of Season 6, the pure adoration and love for everything the channel stands for in Season 7, and the ongoing pure silliness of Season 8 - each period of this channel feels as if it's growing in a new direction, never content sitting in one place for too long - and yet the appeal of a rip like Athletic Doctor remains oh so core to the entire SiIvaGunner experience. The experience of which I've made my best effort to cover across all 365 posts on this blog. To show everyone the layers in which this channel goes in.
That's what I've been wanting to show you... but now, before I end this post, I want to briefly talk about what you've shown *me*. I know its a cliché thing to say, but really - it warms my heart EVERY time I receive messages about the blog. This all began as just a way for me to practice my writing ability, but suddenly I was having the actual rippers - the names that I'd admire from my MP3 player but hardly ever considered able to actually interact with - messaging me in private to express how happy my posts made them...not to mention the people in SiIvaCord discussing rips with me, digging into my writing, sharing anecdotes I'd never heard of, and everyone who requested rips genuinely eager to see what I had to write about them...like, again, its the biggest cliché on the planet, and I know this blog really isn't all *that* big in the grand scheme of things - but I never expected to even get more than five people actually engaging with what I post? To everyone, and ESPECIALLY to the silent majority reading my posts without a Tumblr account, the ones engaging from a distance - thank you SO much for validating all that I've done on here.
Now, there's still plenty of posts I have left in me, plenty of ones already in the drafts and unfulfilled requests well in the dozens. But like...tons has happened since when this all started 12 months ago. I got a summer job! I'm wrapping up what's hopefully my final three school courses! I've started listening to so much new music, expanding my music tastes, in huge part thanks to all the digging this blog has made me do! And, of course, getting to be this open about what's likely my absolute weirdest special interest has honestly made me feel more confident in myself as a person, made me a more outgoing individual in general. And so, to get all of my ducks in a row, to help straighten things out for a bit...I'm going to take a break from regular posting on here. I'm aiming for it to be no longer than a month's time - again, I have much I still wish to write about!! - but you'll of course still see me reblogging fanart and other such things on here just from using Tumblr casually. And hey - if you haven't already, I recommend you take the time to go scavenging through The Archive for daily posts that you might have missed! Having a blog with so much writing on it, so many posts, so much to discover for readers old and new...In a way, I've basically made it so that navigating the blog feels just like navigating the vast seas of the SiIvaGunner channel itself. And isn't that just the most fitting way to leave it all on - an ocean of posts, waiting for you to uncover them?
THAT SIIVAGUNNER TUMBLR BLOG WILL RETURN IN SEASON 2

20th Anniversary
Namie Amuro: Style (2003.12.10)
There are at least four distinct eras in Namie Amuro's career: 1) her initial debut with the idol-ish super eurobeat/dance group SUPER MONKEY'S (which spawned the group MAX) from 1992 to 1995, 2) her major debut as a solo artist with Avex Trax in 1995, kicked off by the single "Body Feels EXIT," through to the height of her popularity as a leading figure in the J-pop industry alongside producer Tetsuya Komuro until her abrupt hiatus in 1997, 3) the awkward, not-very-well-received comeback and transition to post-TK R&B, which saw the lowest sales numbers of her career, and lasted roughly until the release of Queen of Hip-Pop in 2005, and 4) her meteoric rebound, transition back to dance-pop, and the cementing of her status as a legend, until the abrupt announcement of her retirement in 2017. There are a lot of mini-moments within these eras, and many parts overlap so that it's not exactly seamless, but that's the gist of it.
While Namie's comeback was one of the rarest in music history, the factors that led to the initial nadir are just as interesting and numerous. For one, she had squandered the goodwill of the public by engaging in activity that was frowned upon in Japan at the time: she hooked up with a backup dancer, got pregnant, got married, got tattoos, and got divorced, all within the space of a couple of years. On top of it, Namie's success was tied to that of her producer, the mega-popular and prolific Tetsuya Komuro, who was basically running a personal empire in the 1990s. While Namie's popularity and success was never due solely to the music he was writing for her, it was an enormous contributing factor to her sales numbers. TK's brand of pop was the defining style of the 90s, with no one better able to pry open wallets in what was the CD format's most lucrative era. But just as quickly and completely as he ruled hearts and charts, his music fell out of style, also as a result of several factors (mostly the rise of singer-songwriters and R&B/hip-hop in the mainstream, and personal issues involving everything from tax evasion, to drug rumors and a wild romantic life). Namie teaming up with him again for her immediate comeback never stood a chance against so much drama. So major changes were made when Namie ditched the Komuro baggage, taking the plunge with new support -- Dallas Austin, m-flo, ZEEBRA, even Teddy Riley -- into the world of R&B and hip-hop.
This brave step didn't immediately produce amazing results: if anything, Namie's early forays proved lackluster and indecisive on albums like GENIUS 2000. It wasn't until 2003's STYLE that she finally and fully committed to the change. Gone were the days of chasing the chance and dreaming that she was dreaming, Namie was now putting up her dukes, wishing on the same star, and shining more. The songs on the album were all heavily influenced by contemporary Western trends of the time, especially Black hip-hop, fashion, and culture. The early 00s was still the era of P. Diddy, Jennifer Lopez, Nelly, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott, and in some ways, STYLE samples sounds from all of these artists in different ways, with the inclusion of a few softer songs, such as "Four Seasons," "As Good As," and "Come," which were deliberately added for variety. But for the most part, the album is built on beats, bars, and rhymes. This was still a fairly new thing to see in the Japanese mainstream, and certainly by an Avex Trax artist -- for comparison, Ayumi Hamasaki had just released her rock opus I am..., while RAINBOW merely dipped a toe into R&B on a song like "Real me," Ai Otsuka was less than a year out from releasing LOVE PUNCH, Hikaru Utada was actually going softer and more art-pop with Deep River, and both BoA and Kumi Koda had just debuted in Japan with LISTEN TO MY HEART and affection respectively, which stayed squarely on the softer R&B/pop side of the fence. Only Crystal Kay, HEARTSDALES, and maybe DOUBLE were a step ahead of Namie, but I would argue that STYLE and Namie's involvement in projects like SUITE CHIC really let the sound transition into the broader and bigger Oricon mainstream, prompting a rash of copycat records.
Even so, STYLE did poorly. It still hit #1 in its first week, but it stands as Namie's least popular record with the fewest sales numbers to this day. It does, however, have something of a cult following by fans who now look back at the early 00s with nostalgia. Personally, I didn't like this album when I first heard it -- its lack of pop and dance music, which I was used to hearing from Namie, coupled with what seemed like a desperate bid for relevancy in a genre that I wasn't particularly interested in at the time, turned me off from spending much time with it. Nowadays, I dislike this album less -- there are songs on here that I actually really like. My only real caveat is that the album is split too abruptly at the halfway point between the bangers and the non-hip-hop tracks. In hindsight, STYLE is clearly Namie still getting comfortable in this milieu, and it's especially obvious next to albums like Queen of Hip-Pop and PLAY that were more successful at capturing something both influenced by hip-hop and unique to what only Namie could bring.
This CD album comes in a standard jewel case with an OBI and a booklet that features additional photos and lyrics. First press editions featured two exclusive bonus tracks: a remix of "SO CRAZY," and an alternate version of "Wishing on the Same Star." For me, this album is more interesting for what lead to it, what it lead to, and what it said about the state of Namie Amuro and J-pop at the time. It's not great, but it's not nearly as bad as I remember it being. Avex Trax, of course, would politely disagree, largely ignoring it on the career-summarizing compilation album Finally (only "SO CRAZY" represents). After something as tentative and a bit try-hard as this, the world was not ready for what was coming down the pipe with Queen of Hip-Pop, making that era all the more wild and magical.

...actually this spring’s isekai pickings were a little bit better than usual, not even one 2/10 on my list! isenido just barely scraped by by sparing/pseudo-redeeming touma at the last second, but his plotline was SUCH a downer it made me despise the protagonist enough to knock the whole show down to a 3 when otherwise i’d have at least considered it for a low 4, accrued mainly from the excellent little romance with leviathan (of course her screentime is minimal and the rest of the harem is especially worthless to make up for it) (also, touma’s goofy yandere antics are genuinely a treat, but if i think about them for too long i remember that he literally actually did nothing wrong and my spirit of righteous vengeance starts thinking maybe this shit is a 2 after all). though i will soon have forgotten everything abt this show except for its wonderful myanimelist synopsis
Tumblr media
i can’t find a single other website that uses the phrase ‘isekai-normie’, all respect to the mad genius mal editor responsible. the double-isekai aspect is almost so stupid it’s worth talking about but it’s also not even in the damn show, the classmates he got isekai’d with do not even appear in the fucking plot, so i won’t waste more space in this post on it
anyways i was expecting to dole out more 3s this season but everything else managed to accrue enough random charm points to scrape by; fundamentally i’m most affected by tone and this particular set all trended towards the genuinely fluffy and forgiving, which is shocking considering yuusha ga shinda is on this list but i’m a sap so i loved the bullshit reverse body-swap resolution and was even kind of rooting for touka and yuna’s deeply stupid romance by the finale. tensei kizoku is probably the meanest of the bunch but it made up for it in other ways (first and foremost: wataru hatano catboy ojisan. the character he voiced in yuusha ga shinda was also the highlight of that show lol, a seasonal throughline), mostly literally by having great design sense and introducing a whole cast’s worth of new characters every single episode so even though the main harem was another viciously terrible one we essentially ended up spending no time with them at all, i’d mercifully completely forgotten about the elf girl by the time she popped in in the finale
on the flip-side of this is that ‘uncommonly garbage set of love interests’ is the other throughline of the season for some reason, with iseleve being the other main offender, but in that case it’s offset by obvious Main Girl Who Will Win kaori being more than charming enough to balance out the rest of them. i was disappointed that there were so many irritants and distractions in the real-world part of the plot because yuuya using his video game hacks to win at crane games and getting coerced into becoming a fashion model is WAY more interesting than any of the generic isekai antics on the other side of the door (it’s so pathetic it loops around to deeply compelling at points), though i ended up liking the latter half well enough too once the evil onii-sama plot made it to the redemption arc portion. it’s too brief to really write home about or to bump this show up to a 5 but it did remind me pleasantly of a speed-run version of seikoku no dragonar’s prince julius plot, which will always be the gold standard for those (don’t @ me)
and that leaves isesuma Season Two as the only one on the list i haven’t talked about yet but it’s an outlier that i feel like i have to treat a little differently just because it’s very funny as a case study; when the first season aired in 2017 it was genuinely the worst thing i’d ever seen and i didn’t hesitate to give it a 2/10, while this season felt pretty much as average as one of these can get, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they are of pretty much the exact same quality. the only thing that really stood out this season was how little of a shit touya gives about his harem, even with him being a clueless/reluctant-type protagonist i remember the previous season actually attempting to build (even being mostly dedicated to building...?) romance arcs with the sisters in particular but this season girls he’s JUST met just get added to the fiancé roster *by the other girls* without even consulting him and the show doesn’t even play it as a joke. the mal synopsis for this one presents the harem as the main hook but the only time touya seems to care about anything in this entire season is the mecha engineering plotline, if you close your eyes you can pretend it really is still summer 2017 and you’re watching knight’s & magic..................... anyways it still just barely snags a 4 by actually putting in the white-haired catboy rival (i guess he isn’t actually a catboy but i spent all of s1′s intro thinking he was so that’s ingrained as fact for me) who was in all of s1′s damn intro but did not appear in the show at any point. he’s here now!!!!
also, i did drop katsukami at episode 4. self-respect moments

As we step into a brand-new year, it’s the perfect moment to rethink not just our goals but also our closets. Why not make 2025 the year you commit to a timeless wardrobe? In a fashion landscape dominated by fleeting trends, curating a collection of classic, versatile pieces is a transformative move. Not only will it save you from the cycle of constant shopping, but it will also ensure you exude effortless style year-round. If this sounds like the refresh you’ve been craving, here’s how to begin your journey toward enduring elegance. Check out proven tips on how to build a timeless wardrobe you’d be proud of… #1. Audit your current wardrobe Photo: MART PRODUCTION/Pexels Before embarking on the journey to a timeless wardrobe, it’s crucial to understand your starting point. Begin with a closet audit: take out every item you own and sort them into three categories—keep, donate, and sell. Be honest with yourself about what no longer fits your style or lifestyle. That sequined dress from 2017 that hasn’t seen daylight since? Let it go. Prioritize keeping versatile, high-quality pieces and classic staples that have proven their staying power over the years. #2. Invest in quality over quantity Photo: RDNE Stock Project/Pexels A cornerstone of a timeless wardrobe is prioritizing quality over quantity. Rather than stocking up on ten trendy tops that won’t survive more than a few washes, focus on investing in fewer, high-quality items. Opt for durable, luxurious materials like wool, cashmere, cotton, and silk, which stand the test of time and elevate even the simplest outfits. These fabrics bring a polished sophistication to your look while lasting for years. Think of staples like a well-made trench coat or a perfectly tailored blazer—they’re worth every penny and will remain wardrobe MVPs. #3. Master the art of neutrals Photo: Diana ✨/Pexels Neutrals serve as the backbone of any timeless wardrobe. Classic shades like black, white, beige, navy, and gray are endlessly versatile, offering a foundation for creating a variety of outfits without ever feeling repetitive. To keep things fresh, incorporate different textures—think a soft cashmere sweater with crisp wool trousers or a silky satin blouse paired with rugged denim. This balance of tones and fabrics ensures your look remains chic and anything but monotonous. #4. Add a signature statement piece Photo: Timothy Paule II/Pexels While minimalism forms the heart of a timeless wardrobe, it doesn’t mean abandoning your personal flair. Introduce one or two signature statement pieces that showcase your unique style—a bold red blazer, a vintage leather jacket, or leopard-print loafers can do the trick. These elements inject personality and elevate your outfits without overshadowing the overall timeless aesthetic. #5. Embrace tailoring Photo: Arina Krasnikova/Pexels Ill-fitting clothes can diminish the impact of even the most classic pieces. The secret to timeless elegance? Tailoring. A trusted tailor can transform your wardrobe, adjusting garments to complement your body perfectly. Whether it’s a crisp white shirt or a pair of black trousers, a tailored fit elevates your look from ordinary to exceptional. And don’t overlook affordable pieces—small adjustments can make them look high-end. #6. Build a capsule wardrobe Photo: Skylar Kang/Pexels A capsule wardrobe epitomizes timeless style and simplicity. This curated collection of versatile pieces ensures you’re prepared for any occasion with minimal effort. Start with staples like a crisp white shirt, tailored trousers, a little black dress, and a classic coat. Mix in well-fitted jeans and a few seasonal accents to keep things fresh. With this approach, you’ll have a stress-free wardrobe that’s effortlessly chic year-round. #7. Avoid trend overload Photo: Alexandra Maria/Pexels Trends may be tempting, but they fade faster than you can say “microfashion.” While experimenting is fun, building a wardrobe entirely around fleeting styles often leads to regret and wasted resources. Instead, weave in trend-inspired accessories like a metallic clutch or bold statement earrings. These subtle touches allow you to stay current without sacrificing the timeless appeal of your wardrobe. #8. Care for your clothes A timeless wardrobe isn’t just built—it’s preserved. Proper care is essential to keep your clothes looking their best. Hand wash delicate items, use high-quality hangers to maintain structure, and store seasonal pieces in breathable bags. Regular maintenance, like repairing loose buttons or fixing small tears, ensures your garments stand the test of time and stay as impeccable as the day you bought them. #9. Prioritize versatile footwear Photo: Rachel Claire/Pexels Shoes set the tone for your outfit, making them a cornerstone of a timeless wardrobe. Invest in versatile classics like sleek leather loafers, nude pumps, ankle boots, and clean white sneakers—styles that seamlessly transition across occasions. To inject personality into your look, add a pair of bold-colored flats or eye-catching printed boots. These choices strike the perfect balance between practicality and flair. #10. Be selective with accessories Photo: Yusuf Kayode/Pexels Accessories have the power to elevate any outfit, but less is often more when aiming for timeless style. Choose classic pieces such as pearl earrings, a leather belt, or a silk scarf—items that complement multiple looks without overwhelming them. These accessories never lose their charm and add a refined touch to your ensemble. Keep it simple, and let each piece shine on its own for an effortlessly chic effect. 11. Stay true to your personal style Ultimately, the key to a timeless wardrobe lies in staying true to yourself. While it’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends or influencer “must-haves,” your wardrobe should reflect your unique lifestyle and personal style. Select pieces that not only make you feel confident but also comfortable. When you wear what truly resonates with you, your style will naturally shine through, creating a wardrobe that stands the test of time. #12. Think sustainably Photo: RDNE stock project/Pexels Building a timeless wardrobe aligns perfectly with sustainable fashion practices. By focusing on quality over quantity and ensuring your clothes stand the test of time, you’re not only creating a versatile collection but also reducing waste. Opting for second-hand shopping or supporting ethical brands that prioritize sustainable production methods can further contribute to a healthier planet. In this way, timeless style becomes a conscious choice for both your wardrobe and the environment. #13. Keep updating and evolving Photo: MART PRODUCTION/Pexels A timeless wardrobe isn’t static—it evolves alongside your style. As your preferences shift, regularly reassess your collection and replace worn-out pieces with high-quality alternatives. This ongoing process ensures your wardrobe remains fresh and relevant, allowing you to feel stylish and confident year after year. The key is to stay adaptable while maintaining the core elements of timelessness. In conclusion Curating a timeless wardrobe is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making intentional choices that reflect your style, values, and needs. As you embrace this resolution in 2025, you’ll find yourself with a closet that not only looks amazing but also simplifies your life. Say goodbye to the stress of “I have nothing to wear” and hello to a wardrobe that works for you—timelessly. This year, let’s redefine fashion goals. With a timeless wardrobe, you’re not just dressing for today—you’re setting the foundation for a lifetime of effortless style. WE <3 SLOW FASHION
The fashion industry is one of the most harmful impacts on our environment from child labour, cheap exports and viscous trend cycles. These issues can be connected to the high demand of new designs from consumers that more and more collections are released each year. Around 20 years ago, the fashion industry would only turn out two collections a year, for autumn/winter and summer/spring, but now to keep up with the ever changing trends, release 50-100 mini collections per year (Domingos, Vale &Faria 2022).
In contrast to the harmful impacts of fast fashion, slow fashion has been introduced to mitigate some of these harmful processes. The slow fashion movement represents the need to invest in more durable products and timeless designs in order to transform the values of the fashion industry and adopt more sustainable methods. The movement pushes companies to adopt a business model that prioritises quality over quantity and based on slower manufacturing, ethical attitudes and durable well-made products (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). By providing workers with safe and just working conditions, including fair wages, manufacturers can also improve economic aspects of the process (Zhen et al. 2017, p. 83).
Tumblr media
The slow fashion movement relates to digital citizenship, with the idea of respecting each other in online spaces and acting responsibility relates to the movement's respect for sweat shop workers and the concept of sustainability. There are a number of influencers that rave about sustainable fashion and educate viewers about things such as finding local brands and how to get involved in fashion and environmental activism. Venetia Le Manna is a "former fast fashion addict turned fair fashion campaigner" who uses her digital platform to call out big companies for over-production and exploitation of their workers. Being a good corporate citizen can be achieved by committing to sustainable fashion, but it can also be extended to being a good digital citizen by acting responsibly online when deciding where your next clothing purchase will be. Once upon a time you were only able to buy second hand clothing if you scoured all your local op shops for hours but nowadays, apps like Depop and Poshmark are available to almost everyone. Facebook Marketplace and Instagram reselling pages are also accessible for branded garments.
Tumblr media
I personally buy almost all of my clothes second hand because I love a good bargain. Brands like Princess Polly or Cotton On have ridiculous prices for their basics that I can find at the op shop for half the price. I also don't really like searching through racks of clothing at the op shop because it can get overwhelming so I frequent a women's clothing market in Williamstown that's held every few months. I love that it has a wide range of sellers with different senses of style so I can find a lot of unique pieces for really good prices. Also buying a second hand item holds some sentimental value because I know it's from years or seasons ago, I'll never be able to find it again. I will keep some garments for literally forever if I can. I've had the same Supre black singlet I bought off of a Facebook group for 5+ years and it has not a single hole! And because my favourite clothing market is every few months it’s the only time I'll buy new clothes but sometimes I won't buy anything because nothing catches my eye. However, the last market I went to I found a brand new North Face jacket for $30! The seller just wanted to get rid of it because her daughter didn't want it even after they brought it home from overseas. Similarly, a lot of second hand sellers at markets or on Facebook just want to get rid of clothes that take up space, like the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure".

FAS 3001- Trend forcasting
The ability to be able to predict the next trend before it even begins is a key part in not only the fashion industry but so many different business types. To predict a trend you must have a clear and good knowledge of what consumers want and what influences their spending habits. The ability to correctly determine the next big trend means that companies can create products that will sell.
There are two key roles within the trend industry. The first is trend reporting, this involves looking at current trends in the world and what is popular at that time. This information can help determine what the next big thing could be and is the key foundation to trend prediction. Four methods to collect key data are comp shopping, shop windows, sales data and consumer media. Comp shopping or competitive shopping involves companies checking out what their competitors are doing in relation to products, overall message and offers. This is called comparative shop analysis and is important to do when selling any kind of product, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger said;
"I looked at my competitors and I thought that, If they could do it, I could do it. And if, they are popular and doing well, I could compete with them."
A trend forecaster is the one actually deciding what the next trend will be. It's their job to constantly keep update to date with what's happening within the industry, trying to find any pattern. Martin Raymond describes trend forecasters as;
"Lifestyle detectives who trace and watch the shift in lifestyle patterns, choices, mindsets that predict the changes in how people live; dress, behave, communicate & work".
The key elements for defining a trend are:
Direction of Change: how is a trend evolving and changing
Values and needs: people have different needs and wants, how do people's lifestyles affect this
Forces: events that are unplanned and cause change, i.e Covid-19
Manifestations: changes expressed by language, movies, style, behaviour and events
Certain groups: subcultures have a key role in trends as trickle down theory is the basis of all trends (Dragt, E 2017)
Trend cartogram
The trend wheel is forever rotating, allowing for new looks and products to become popular, it just depends on how well the trend takes on. There are 4 main trend descriptors, they are; fads, micro trends, macro trends and classics. A fad are trends that have very little impact and only last for 3-6 months for example parachute pants that were popular in the 80s. Micro trends are those trends that have a small impact and are usually season depending. They have a lifespan of 3-5 years and typically vary from different countries. An example of a micro trend are the trucker hats that were made popular in the early 2000s by celebrities of the time and a stand out brand was 'Von Dutch'. Macro trends are long term and become widespread with persistent change that helps keep their popularity. They make a global impact and have a 5-10 year lifespan, one example are platform heels that are constantly changing style to keep up with the latest clientele. Lastly are classic trends, these are essential items that majority own in their wardrobe. They have a mass appeal with a 10-25 year lifespan and a strong example is the timeless 'Little Black Dress' which was revolutionised by designer Coco Chanel in the 1920s.
The trend cycle refers to the introduction and popularisation of a new trend. For this to happen there are 5 stages; Introduction, rise, acceptance, decline and obsolescence. The first stage introduces a new style either from the runway, seen in street style, through influencers or put forward by marketing agencies. For the style to be coined a 'trend' the next stage sees the rise of the style made popular by celebrities and influencers wearing outfits that incorporate the new style, this increases the demand. The acceptance stage sees the peak of the trend and is prevalent in most stores and begins the mass producing of the chosen style. The decline stage happens when people realise the trend has become mainstream and no longer holds its uniqueness value, which leads to the final stage. Obsolescence means the trend is no longer wanted and this tends to be linked to the introduction of a new style which restarts the cycle, but due to how the cycle works the trend may well come back.
The cycle has always been relevant when it comes to new trends but in todays consumer market the cycle moves at a much faster rate. This has resulted in the increase of fast fashion and has gone to such an extent that ultra-fast fashion is the new norm. The cycle used to be known as the 20 year cycle but with the rise of micro trends the cycle is run through in months if not weeks. A big factor for this change is the rise of social media. Trends were previously derived from runways but now they are gaining momentum due to instagram and TikTok. The end result to all the increasing micro trends is mass over production and consumption which will lead to the cycle becoming obsolete itself.

also while i’m on a tangent here i want to talk about how we lost fun and whimsy in clothing. FUCK clean girl aesthetic FUCK scandinavian girl aesthetic
i remember my mom’s clothes being so creative. silk blouses with colorful flowers on it, gowns that flowed through her body as if she was a marble statue and someone carved the dress onto her, leather jackets that were actually lather and lasted for years, handbags that looked like someone poured their heart onto it even though it was mass produced, shoes that had so many details on them that you’d assume they were medieval paintings. the shit you saw on tiktok’s “pick an outfit for this and this extremely specific situation” posts were random finds in mango in mid 2000s. i hate how boring we have become in the fashion world. even with designer brands you see minimalism take over like the plague.
chanel has always been boring, but dior? seeing their 90s-00s shows vs today feels dystopian. versace is one of the last high designer brands that bring something to the table and even they’re also laying a thin thread. gucci, who was supposed to be the most extravagant and chaotic of them has been diluted into shit brown coats and massive logo tshirts. and don’t get me started on how shitty their fabrics look.
what happened to expressing yourself through fashion? when did everyone become so “mass produced” and when and WHY did brands start to cater to this? i blame hailey bieber for this HARD. she put her hair in a bun ONCE and started wearing tinted lip balms and she’s suddenly a fashion icon. look at bella hadid. she’s a true ICON. she makes people question her with some of her fits. she also wears a slick back bun on top of her gorgeous, chaotic fits. she’s wearing your work clothes after she’s out from pilates. you look at hear beauty in awe but never take the shot to be brave with your style like she is, and rather idolize boring, vanilla celebrities like hailey and kendall.
and i know these people are also bored because no one would be so gagged over leopard prints like we did last season. come on man. your mom, aunt, even grandma wore leopard prints more creatively. and you think it’s fashionable to wear an elastic leopard crop top from h&m on top of your straight legged zara jeans. and the colors don’t even match. and bitch… don’t even get me started on those “fashion influencers” who think they’re so revolutionary because they advised their audience to wear a blazer over their jeans and wear gold jewelry that hailey bieber wore once. remember bestdressed? how everyone was obsessed with her brave fashion choices? she BUILT the current “over the top” fashion trends years ago on her own because she allowed her creativity to take control over her fashion choices. she remains one of the best influencers in my opinion, even though she hasn’t been active in ages. she was wearing baggy jeans and bloomers, she was layering her clothes in 2017!!
we are so used to mediocrity now that having dark red lips was sensational (cherry cola. come on. cherry cola? stop fucking labeling everything). tomato girl, clean girl, blueberry milk nails, rockstar gf, old money. can yall not figure something new without having it be labelled something? “what’s this aesthetic called?” i don’t know someone wore something nice. “it’s a mixture of grunge and rockstar gf” and it’s bootcut jeans with green long sleeves taken with a pale filter on. be so fucking for real once. “can we start wearing this again?” just fucking wear it? do you need a this-core to wear it? do you need to be a this-girl to feel comfortable within yourself? you’re wear this-item’s mass produced version from bershka, which will probably give you rashes if you wear it for longer than 5 hours, and will probably annihilate itself after 3 washes, and let it collect dust in your closet because the trend lasted for two seconds. but no worries, now that-core is popular and everyone’s trying to be that-girl. and bershka will produce some shitty that-core item because they know you’ll create a line to buy it. like you did with stanley cups. fucking reusable cups man. stanley is an incredible thermos brand. it lasts years. my DAD used to chase sales to get one. but now it’s pink and has a straw so it’s so cute core and you can even buy pouches or special ice cubes for it so you can feel like you did something valuable for yourself for once. and you’ll fucking use it to drink water. a stanley thermos for drinking water in your home. water that you emptied from a plastic bottle. at least pour some gin in it to make it count for something.
i am so angry at this topic specifically because i have experienced the change. i have had a different fashion sense but was scared to stand out even as a kid. i did dress like a basic bitch at times, don’r think i was (and still am) a fashion connoisseur. i wore leggings and sweatshirts like everyone else. did my makeup like everyone else at times. and it made me feel AWFUL. i felt like a background character. so this year i promised myself that i wouldn’t dress down for anything. i started wearing weird combinations that i liked, started doing my makeup extra dark the way i always wished it to be. even during my exams, i dressed up. because it took no more extra energy, and i felt comfortable! i wore heavy makeup while spending the night at the library. wore platform heels to the exams. i felt GOOD. i knew people would find some of my choices odd, as they did years ago when i tried to dress differently. but i realized, i would rather be ugly than be boring.
there is a girl in my faculty who is a micro influencer. she dresses “weirdly” and posts her outfits. even her comments are filled with mean comments. and i keep hearing gossip about her from people who have no business with her (a freshman, we’re fucking SENIORS), and make fun of her.
bitch, she’s wearing statement pieces from her mom’s closet and you’re wearing a 50$ polyester sweater with “future milf” on it. you have no business talking shit about a young girl experimenting with her identity through her fashion choices. and you know what? yeah she does wear some questionable stuff every now and then, but overall she dresses nice! she looks confident and despite being bullied she keeps posting herself. she wears like someone you’d drool over if you saw it on pinterest. i respect her. we all should wear more “ugly” stuff.
the regression era (2010s) left an unfixable damage in fashion and music in my opinion. fun is dead. take full offense in my post. stop looking mass produced. start thinking what YOU will like to wear, not how others will want you to wear.
and fuck minimalism. fuck fast fashion.
seeing fast fashion brands try to create y2k clothing is hilarious because the real y2k clothes are sold on second hand apps from retired baddies cleaning out their closets (including their kids’ clothes) for so cheap that you think someone must have died while wearing it

1920s fashion history: the women who changed our style forever
http://fashion-trendin.com/1920s-fashion-history-the-women-who-changed-our-style-forever/
1920s fashion history: the women who changed our style forever
We chart the greatest influencers on the twenties’ style scene.
Before the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis brought us the iconic 1930s fashion styles, there were the super chic styles of the roaring twenties. From the ultra-glam flapper girls to the first waves of cool androgyny, 1920s fashion was all about liberation, trying new things and having a whole lot of fun in the process.
After World War One, women’s style loosened up (literally) as the corsets came off, skirts got shorter , and thanks to a certain Coco Chanel, trousers for women were in for the very first time.
While comfort was king, there was still a decadence to Gatsby-era fashion – think Art Deco motifs, rich velvet or satin dressese embellished with pearls and gems. Showgirls like Josephine Baker, Clara Bow and Greta Garbo became the key trendsetters of the decade.
Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s 1920s fashion
We are eternally grateful to Mademoiselle Coco Chanel for so many definitive 1920s fashion styles, and some of the greatest sartorial inventions; the little black dress, skirt suit, costume jewellery, espadrilles… But her greatest, most overarching influence? The liberation of women’s clothing and the concept of casual chic in the 1920s. Chanel led the trend for a flatter, corset-free bust, a streamlined silhouette with no hyper-waistline and she popularised trousers for women. Next time you let it all hang out after a huge dinner, you can thank this woman.
Clara Bow’s 1920s fashion
Here’s one of the original IT actresses, Clara Bow, modelling an ideal 1920s fashion look. The ultimate flapper girl, she looks ready to break into a Charleston any moment, doesn’t she? The slimming chevrons and dropped waist became style trademarks for all flapper girls by day, and were amped up in sequinned versions for the Gatsby glam parties at night.
Colleen Moore’s 1920s fashion
Silent film actress Colleen Moore basically invented the bob. Women around the world copied the black block cut that she and a few other early adopting actresses made popular, making her one of the greatest beauty influencers of all time – although 1960s fashion would see an even shorter popular style in the pixie crop. She’s pretty much the reason so many of us opt for bob hairstyles today. Colleen loved her bob so much, in fact, that she kept that haircut until the day she died in 1988. Talk about a signature style…
Louise Brooks 1920s fashion
Party girl Louise tried and tested all of the trends the decade had to offer, and we’ve got her down as an Alexa of the decade. She popularised the bob, got women to see how fab trousers can be and was one of the first actresses to speak openly about her experiments with her sexuality. Palazzo trousers are still a staple of holiday style.
Josephine Baker’s 1920s fashion
Josephine Baker is the woman who inspired Beyonce’s booty-shake. How cool is that? The original showgirl was famous for her ‘banana dance’, plus she was a spy and she owned a pet cheetah, which she used to walk in Paris. A queen of accessorising, the Jazz Age beauty sometimes wore little else on stage, and by day she worked an Art Deco print like no other.
Greta Garbo and Valentina Schlee 1920s fashion
On the set of The Temptress, actress Greta Garbo was without doubt one of the decade’s most alluring film stars. While many actresses sexed it up to appeal to male audiences, Greta’s sense of style meant that women, too, were fascinated by her beauty. Her favourite designer was Valentina Schlee, and she went on to epitomise old Hollywood glamour.
Gloria Swanson’s 1920s fashion
Dripping with glamour in her spliced gold dress and bejewelled headband, Gloria Swanson was the picture of 1920s fashion. Never knowingly understated, her extravagant dress sense meant that she was one of the decade’s stand-out style star – a Lady Gaga for the Jazz Age, if you will.
Dorothy Sebastian and Joan Crawford’s 1920s fashion
As women’s style became more relaxed, there was more emphasis than ever before on sportswear and swimwear. We were still a long way off from the bikini here; a staple part of 1940s fashion, it wasn’t invented until 1946. But for the first time women could move freely and actually be active in their activewear, so all in all it was a pretty revolutionary decade.
Pola Negri’s 1920s fashion
The first European actress to be invited to Hollywood, silent film star Pola was responsible for introducing all sorts of our favourite fashion and beauty trends to popular culture. She loved headgear, put fur boots on the fashion map and even introduced the world to the concept of red painted toenails.
Dorothy Mackaill’s 1920s fashion
As trousers for women became the norm, the androgynous look was the coolest trend to be seen in. Brit actress Dorothy worked a full tuxedo on the set of The Crystal Cup, making a style statement that women everywhere wanted to buy into.
Mary Pickford’s 1920s fashion
The square cut was the neckline of the decade, flattening the bust line after years of ample cleavage in corsets. Co-founder of film studio United Arts, Mary Pickford was a 1920s heroine for women at work, and a power-dressing one at that.
Anita Page’s 1920s fashion
Queen of pearls Anita, pictured below right with actresses Joan Crawford and Dorothy Sebastian for the film Our Dancing Daughters, reportedly received 35,000 fan letters in a week during her heyday. Remember folks, these were the times when fan-girls didn’t have Twitter or emojis to express their love for a star, so these were physical, hand-written notes of adoration. Amazing, right?
Jean Arthur 1920s fashion
Jean was the 1920s’ too cool style icon and queen of screwball comedy. She was publicity shy – ‘I’d rather have slit my throat’ than do an interview – and worked an androgynous slick look. Think crisp white shirts and relaxed tailored trousers here.
Fay Wray 1920s fashion
Before she became an international superstar in 1933’s King Kong, Fay was a young flapper girl with a penchant for Art Deco jewellery like no other. Just look at that gorgeous choker and all of those stencil-like bracelets.
Zelda Fitzgerald 1920s fashion
Mr Gatsby himself, author F. Scott Fitzgerald declared his novelist wife Zelda to be ‘the first American Flapper.’ Her creativity, independence and attitude were exactly what being a flapper girl was all about. You didn’t think it was only about those glitzy dresses now, did you?

every time a new piece of media joins in on the 80s nostalgia trend thats happening right now stranger things ends up getting dragged through the mud and i dont like that!! first of all i acknowledge that these movies are obviously banking on the success of stranger things. it 2017 takes place in the 80s rather than the book's setting of the 50s and it features finn wolfhard. fear street takes place in the late 70s/early 90s and features several stranger things actors, similar locations, and an overall very similar look. ready player one crammed so many 80s references in it inspired demi adejuyigbe's song that i think about literally all the time. and inevitably when people dislike these movies they tend to criticize the reliance on nostalgia and it alwayssss gets traced back to stranger things, which is then blamed for "banking on the nostalgia for the 80s" and implied to be nothing more than its references to the time. BUT
here's the thing. stranger things has to take place in the 80s. a story about the government doing illict mk-ultra experiments to spy on the russians is inseparable from the politics of the 80s. a story about a young boy going missing and his friends riding around on bikes investigating depends on the lack of instant communication & constant monitoring of children that still existed in the 80s. if the story didn't depend on those elements and still took place in the 80s, sure, you could say it uses the time period for nothing more than marketing and nostalgia but that's not the case! and i see a lot of people bemoan what they consider to be references that are "too obvious" like the ghostbusters halloween costumes, the soundtrack in general, barb's whole look, etc. but...they're accurate to the time period! how could you have a show that takes place in the 80s and not feature accurate fashion from that time? music?? media??? obviously as more and more movies/shows jump onto the success of st, these references become less and less interesting and ultimately end up feeling stale, but how could you not have them? not to mention my mom was really excited to see barb carrying a trapper keeper <3
stranger things also challenges aspects of 80's pop culture with subverted expectations. the best example of this imo is obviously steve's entire character. typical jock all american boy bully that was wildly popular in 80s teen media, but within the first episode it's already made clear that steve is an actual person who exists beyond his archetype. he stumbles sneaking into nancy's window and points out the judgements she has against other girls she considers to be slutty and backs off on his advances and above all genuinely likes her rather than just using her for sex. he evolves a million other times as the show progresses because the show values its characters and the way they're written, which wouldn't be the case if they were just using the bare bones of 80s media tropes and calling it a day.
not to mention how stranger things' most iconic images are things entirely original to the show. the letter wall was everywhere and recreated a million times, el's pink dress + eggo box look was a million halloween costumes, the nail bat was so popular it made a whole reappearance in the season two trailer, i could go on. somehow the show managed to create these very iconic images that feel like they're from a classic 80s movie despite being made in 2016. it would be insanely easy for the show to just not even bother with coming up with their own visuals and instead go the ready player one route where the supposedly impressive scenes literally just feature a popular 80s character
not everyone is gonna agree obviously but i think stranger things is genuinely a well made show in season one, when the 80s trend kicked off after its enormous success. and im not gonna act like it never uses nostalgia as a draw-in because it definitely mentions star wars more than necessary and season three was clearly written around the concept of an 80s mall, but it's obvious that everyone involved with making the show cared about its quality rather than just slapping together some references because they knew it'd do well. it has a compelling story with a large cast of mostly well written characters and great actors and unique dynamics etc etc etc. you can tell when something is made entirely to bank off a specific aesthetic because it generally doesn't end up drawing people in and keeping them dedicated to the story. and stranger things did kickstart a long trend of nostaglia based media, much of which is unoriginal and mediocre, but it shouldn't be dragged down along with them
