For her second marriage, to Timothy Laurence, Anne kept her outfit very low key and chose a cream suit with a high necked jacket over a knee length dress. Her only accessories were a small spray of blossoms worn in her hair and a simple bouquet of white heather.

The wedding dress of Sophie Rhys-Jones was designed by Samantha Shaw, is made of hand-dyed silk organza and hand-dyed silk crepe. It is full-length, with long sleeves and the detail consists of rows of pearls and crystal beading around the neck, sleeves and train, with further beading down the back and front of the dress-coat. 325,000 cut-glass and pearl beads are sewn on the dress, which is corseted, with a V-neck. The full-length veil is one inch longer than the train. It is made of hand-dyed silk tulle, and hand-finished with spotted crystal detail. The train is long, and the bride carried a bouquet of ivory roses.

To accompany the dress, the bride also wore a black-and-white pearl necklace, interspersed with white gold rondels, and a matching pair of black-and-white pearl drop earrings, designed by Prince Edward and made by Asprey and Garrard as a wedding gift from Edward. Sophie wore a diamond tiara, from the Queen's private collection, consisting of three open-work scroll motifs, designed and re-modelled by the Crown Jeweller, David Thomas, at Asprey and Garrard. Her shoes were three-inch heel court shoes made of silk crepe by Gina.

Camilla Parker Bowles's wedding dress was a cream silk chiffon dress hemmed with vertical rows of Swiss-made appliqued woven disks, and a matching oyster silk basket weave coat. She completed the outfit with pale beige suede shoes with almond-colored toes designed by L. K. Bennett, a Philip Treacy wide-brimmed cream-coloured straw hat overlaid with ivory French lace and feathers, and a purse made from embossed calf leather with a half flap closing and suede lining, from Launer's "East/West" collection. English designer Sarah Burton, creative director of the luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen, designed the bridal gown. Noted for its design, symbolism, and expected influence on Western bridal gown trends. Official statements noted that Middleton wished to combine tradition and modernity, "with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen's work." She and Burton worked closely together in formulating the dress design.

The ivory satin bodice was padded slightly at the hips and narrowed at the waist, and was inspired by the Victorian tradition of corsetry that is a particular Alexander McQueen hallmark. The bodice incorporated floral motifs cut from machine-made lace, which were then appliquéd on to silk net (tulle) by workers from the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. On the back were 58 buttons of gazar and organza, which fasten by means of rouleau loops. The skirt, underskirt trim and bridal train (which measured 270 cm—110in) also incorporated lace appliquéd in a similar manner. The main body of the dress was made in ivory and white satin gazar, using UK fabrics which had been specially sourced by Sarah Burton, with a long, full skirt designed to echo an opening flower, with soft pleats which unfolded to the floor, forming a Victorian-style semi-bustle at the back, and finishing in a short train measuring just under three metres in length. To partially fulfill the 'something blue' portion of the British wedding tradition, a blue ribbon was sewn inside the dress. The design for the bodice of the dress featuring lace in the style of the 19th century was the 'something old'.

Part 2 of Prom: 1999

Since captions apparently don’t work, I’ll just put the notes right here.

1- 2 Besides corset tops with tulle skirts, the other big trend was having a sheer overlayer. One of my best friends had a dress like the one on the left, but in black and red (and, yes, it was gorgeous).

3, 4, 5 For some reason this catalog was pushing bustle dresses, something I didn’t see at all at my prom. But I would shank a bitch for the purple crossdye strapless dress. Not joking. I would’ve worn it but my mother vetoed that idea.

6-7 Another couple of good hair and makeup examples. My only complaint is that none of the models in this catalog is wearing a Y necklace (maybe there’s one but that’s it). Y necklaces with rhinestones, sometimes in a flower shape, were quite The Thing. Otherwise, yeah. That’s it. I myself wore hairpins with rhinestone flowers.

8-9 Last but not least: my dress 💗 All of these dresses were all but floor-length on us real people. They definitely shortened them on the models, but whatever. I was made to wear (slightly ugly) plain white pumps with big square heels. I had wanted to wear sparkly strappy sandals but, again, my mother vetoed that idea. Sigh. And, yes, I still have this dress. I wore it both in 1999 and 2000...

But in 2000 I had a Renaissance-style overdress that I wore with a flower crown and everything.

Post-Modernism

Arts and crafts are not the only aspects of culture that influence contemporary fashion, literature has also had a role in influencing fashion (Hunter, 2012). One of the most influential books to have inspired fashion designers is Frankenstein: Frankenstein’s monster has been printed on shirts (Fig.1) in the Prada Autumn/Winter 2019 collection and Christopher Kane Spring/Summer 2013 (Heron-Langton, 2020). There were also Frankenstein inspired denim jackets from Feng Chen Wang Spring/Summer 2019 and Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 1999 (Heron-Langton, 2020). Another book that is highly influential is The Shining which inspired Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 1999 (Fig.4) and Undercover Spring/Summer 2018 (Heron-Langton, 2020). In Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 1999, the garments looked like ice to reference the ending of The Shining where the writer freezes in the snowstorm as well as the fashion show having artificial snow and the collection being presented in an eerie and dramatic way (Heron-Langton, 2020). The dresses from Undercover Spring/Summer 2018 are 1950s styled and the models walked in pairs to reference the twin girls standing in a hallway from The Shining (Heron-Langton, 2020).

Another aspect of culture that influences post-modernist fashion is music (Borrelli-Persson, 2020). Collections such as Moschino Spring/Summer 2020 (Fig.5) and Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 1988 (Fig.7) consisted of garments that looked like musical instruments (Borrelli-Persson, 2020). Then there were collections such as Valentino Spring/Summer 2014 (Fig.3), Basso & Brooke Spring/Summer 2006 (Fig.8), Gucci Spring/Summer 2018 (Fig.9), and Paul Smith Autumn/Winter 2014 (Fig.6) that consists of garments with musical notes used as patterns (Borrelli-Persson, 2020). There were also collections that consisted of garments decorated with musical instruments (Borrelli-Persson, 2020) such as Versace Autumn/Winter 1991 (Fig.10) and Threeasfour Autumn/Winter 2011 (Fig.2).

Even popular figures in culture such as celebrities, musicians and other high-profile individuals influence present day fashion trends (Brassfield, 2017). Contemporary fashion trends often take inspiration from past fashion trends and modernise them to fit in with the present day (Brassfield, 2017).

BACKGROUND ||

The Plumes are of noble blood that had been around since the time the Roman Empire was declined and settled in British Isles, their background is similar to the Fragas except they had affair with the fairies resulting in the descendants having fairy blood, though at the cost of having side effects affecting their well-being depending on how much effort they are willing to use, they also have a long history of sacrificing their offsprings with strong fairy blood as they have a short lifespan and are seen only as battery to fuel the lineage.

The Plumes possessed Fae, a quality of hereditary trait found in their genes, allows to summon fairies as familiars at their will, Imaginary Numbers, Hollow and Fire element are the main source of their magecraft.

Unlike the Fragas, they are nobles and their name soon catches the attention of the Association, fearing for their safety and in fear they would be put under Sealing Designation, the Plumes changed their name from Plume to Veritas and hid in obscurity for a while. They decided to practice magecraft in secret and not to let it affect their lifestyle. While they still live a comfortable lifestyle, they prefer to lay low and live a decent life.

Aristhea was born to Arina Koei and Uriel Plume as the first daughter, she has abnormal magical energy and mediocre magic circuits causing her to be born fragile. As a result, Uriel gave Aristhea to his mother, Isolde where Isolde raised her and taught her how to control her thaumaturgy. She gets occasional visits from her mother and father. So far, her childhood has ups and downs but doesn’t include a beating when she makes a mistake, her only traumatic memory was where she lost control of her body and fell down the stairs leaving in a pool of dark, red almost black blood. 

Aristhea was around 5 when Rene, her younger brother was born, around that time, Arina died a few months due to the strain of Rene’s birth. Aristhea took care of Rene followed by their aunt, Cosette. She is homeschooled in her primary days but was allowed to enter Elementary and Secondary school but wore a Mystic Code to prevent her from bleeding as side effects. 

Her father Uriel is often away on a business trip but shows that he cares for his children greatly by coming home during holidays and their birthdays.

PERSONALITY

Aristhea is known to have eccentric, complex personality, she can’t make decisions or would take very long time to make them as she is continually fighting what to do if she chose one choice or branching them making more imaginary scenarios and making things complicated. She also has a habit of zoning out or not paying attention to scenarios deeming to others if she was stupid or challenged. She also makes sarcastic comments sometimes at the wrong timing causing her to go into trouble.

Despite this, she is known to be crafty and calculated, at times using her head to think outside the box and use whatever means to get what she wants, she is also good with reading emotions of other people and using it against them, calm and precise, she also has a way of getting back to them in the most creative way possible whether inflicting physical harm or emotionally breaking them, though she also refuses to admit defeat or humiliation when it doesn’t go her way. 

Aristhea may be distant, aloof or even downright, intimidating thanks to her scornful and contempt expression, but this was simply the work of her origin, Inure causing her indifference over negative situations or unfortunate things happening around, people cite her as a callous individual, perhaps she herself cite this as this is how she looks onto herself. But just because it’s her origin doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of showing moments of joy. It was simply because she was a selective young woman when it comes to who she would show her sweet, amicable side. She has a big, sisterly love to her younger brother as a promise she kept to her mother in her dying moments.

How she speaks is direct and short when it comes to strangers as she have no interest in a short talk unless it piqued her interest.

She loves reading books but shows little to no interest on growing technology, but still handles around gadgets such as phone and laptop to get on with the trend but overall, she loves the aesthetic of papers, especially old books and their scent. Her favorite book/s overall are Tristan and Iseult especially as it’s the book her grandmother read to her during bedtime and the Tale of Genji as well as classics such as Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott and of course, Erotica novels. Yes, she also read Eroticas even bad ones.

APPEARANCE

Aristhea is a young, attractive woman with fair complexion and dirty white, long hair with bangs cut above her eyes. She wears a simple, white shirt and a skirt with black stockings and some shoes but overall, she wears anything she finds stylish herself. Aristhea owns a lot of frilled clothing 90% of those are from her grandmother back in her youth.

ABILITIES

Her elemental attributes is Hollow or better known as Imaginary Numbers, it is usually associated with children born with Fae blood, and as mentioned before, the stronger the mixed blood where, the better, but comes with a short lifespan. Though, Amiya was a unique case as she hoards souls of tormented children that where sacrificed for the family's personal gain, their hatred is so powerful in fact that whenever Aristhea performs her attack on her opponent, their hatred is channeled through her forcing her to convert her body's entire nervous system initially then her muscular system, adding more magic circuits to eradicate a single target. Similar manner to Illyasviel's NP but more fatal as it causes rupture in her internal organs. She practices witchcraft in her past time but rarely does it as she refused sacrificing animals or even using her blood whenever she wanted too. Similar case to Erice Utsumi, unlike Erice, she manifests magical energy from her palms which requires practice and intense training and uses a Mystic Code in form of a Lance to channel through her magecraft. 

Besides magic, she uses a Lance given to her by her aunt as training where she channels her magical energy to enhance it but it’s much weaker due to the Mystic Code’s nature in suppressing its holder to make sure she doesn’t collapse from the aftermath.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CHARACTERS/SERVANTS:

Isolde Veritas: Rene and Aristhea’s grandmother, she is a stern, firm, no-nonsense woman who nurtures her grandchildren. Coming from a toxic, mage background, she understood what was going on and made sure to make up lies in order to not let her grandchildren pick up their ways as she finds there’s no happiness attained to it. However, she is stricter to Aristhea when training only to benefit her granddaughter and made sure she isn’t fragile or vulnerable when she is on her own.

Arina Koei: mother of Aristhea and Rene, she is a loving and kind mother coming from a decaying bloodline, she is completely unaware of her husband’s dark past and unstable behavior, she willingly chose to give birth to Rene and keeping promise to Uriel to love their children as much as she loves him. Her death is one of the factor of Uriel’s paranoia.

Cosette Veritas: Cosette is Isolde’s younger daughter, Rene and Aristhea’s aunt. Like her mother, she is painfully aware of how shady and corrupt mages are and has no interest in finding the Root, only sees magecraft as something of a hobby. 

Horacio Lope: a mage, an intern in Chaldea like her. He found her to be quite odd. That’s because of her thaumaturgy allows him to see spirits and they happen to be hostile towards him. Horacio and Aristhea have a brother/sister dynamic that has their own vicissitudes.

Animated Outfits I Love

Since @thenamelessdoll started this new trend, and since I love fashion and animation, I was super excited to do this! I tried to vary my choices in terms of types of outfits and franchises, although be prepared for lots of pink, and they’re listed in no particular order.

1.) Aurora’s Pink Dress, Sleeping Beauty (1959)

This is my favorite Disney Princess dress and, while the blue version is also lovely, I’m biased toward the pink version. I love the silhouette and the off-the-shoulder sleeves, and the overall construction is so simple yet elegant.

2.) Spider-Woman/Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018)

Everything about Gwen’s outfit is just #aesthetic. The color pallate, the hood, the pointe shoes, the whole look comes together so well and makes for not only one of my favorite redesigns, but one of my favorite superhero costumes.

3.) Utena’s Rose Bride Costume, Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997)

While the context of Utena wearing this is icky, the dress and accessories themselves are still so lovely. I love the contrast between the pale pink/purple and seafoam green, the rose bride outfit itself is so iconic, and the dress + sword combination is too good.

4.) Kim’s Heart Crop Top and Pants, Kim Possible (2002)

While Kim’s main outfit is unquestionably iconic, this is a super cute casual look and closer to my actual style. I love the late 90’s/early 00’s energy, and we need to bring back the crop top and baggy pants look.

5.) Mulan’s Matchmaker Dress, Mulan (1997)

I was OBSESSED with this dress as a kid and, like many other things, six-year old me was completely right. The sleeves and overall drapery stand out compared to many other princess outfits, and the color palette is similarly unconventional but very appealing.

6.) Nia’s Die Gurren Outfit, Gurren Lagan (2007)

It was so hard to choose between Nia’s two pre-timeskip outfits, but I just couldn’t resist the jacket! I love the contrast between the soft pinks and reds, and it’s adorable and girly while still looking cool and spunky!

7.) Cybersix Main Outfit, Cybersix (1999)

This is just the ultimate dark and dramatic superhero look. The big hat, the super-long cape, the fingerless gloves and boots, it just makes me want to stand on top of a building and strike a pose.

8.) Usagi’s Hoodie and Dress, Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie (1995)

90’s Sailor Moon has possibly my favorite outfit designs of any animated series, so it was extremely difficult, but I had to go with this one in the end. The hoodie (my favorite shade of pink) combined with the little black dress and they way it’s mirrored in the pink tights and Mary Janes, offers up the perfect balance between casual and dressy elements. It’s a great, simple outfit, with one of my favorite color combinations.

9.) Rapunzel’s Casual Outfit, Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

While all the princesses have great casual outfits, the hoodie and leggings won me over. I’ve always loved Rapunzel and her color palette, and the patterns and accessories look like something I would actually wear.

10.) Padme’s Crescent Moon Senate Dress, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

There had to be at least one Star Wars design and, since the senators have all the best looks, I had to go with one of my favorite Padme outfits. The dress and cloak convey a great sense of regality, while not going too over-the-top, and little details like the contrasting shade of purple and the embroidery really make this ensemble stand out.

The True Story Behind The Blair Witch Project (1999), And The 13 Real Urban Legends About Witches That Will Make You Lie Down And Cry

It’s been mocked, and it’s been made a cultural icon.

It kick-started a horror trend, and it kicked itself down to the dregs of the film industry.

The Blair Witch Project (1999) is a point of contention among horror fans - you know, a bit like bringing up trans-rights at dinner with your UKIP Aunt sitting two seats down. But, just like trans-rights, we have to talk about it. 

(Fuck you, Jane.)

The Blair Witch Project - and her 2 sequels - was the first film to turn on the camcorder and document the search for something supernatural. 

This was the OG clickbait, this was the beginning of horror films claiming to document true events (ahem Paranormal Activity ahem), and this was the end of horror films being taken seriously.

But it was also these three things that grabbed everyone’s attention.

The original film was based on the claim that in 1994, 3 students went missing whilst exploring the supposedly haunted woods of Burkittsville Maryland. 5 years later, the footage they captured was found and put on the big screen.

Were these real events being documented?

Did these kids actually go missing?

And was the Blair Witch real?

Spoiler alert: no, nope, and not at all.

But even if this specific case wasn’t true, the film itself is unnervingly accurate. Like, literally last night I was researching all the different urban legends relating to witches in the US and I was convinced I had awoken the spirit of the Bell Witch. 

So, considering the solidarity I have with the followers of this blog, I’ve decided to traumatise you, too.

This article is going to provide the summary to the three forgotten ‘n’ fucked-up films that make up the series, tell you why the Blair Witch is an uncomfortably accurate portrayal of witches historically, and finish up with a stroll through the 13 urban legends that are just like the one featured in the film.

Pull on your hiking boots, and hand me the map.

Let’s get spooky.

Here’s A Quick Summary Of The Blair Witch Film Series

Ahh, the 90s. 

Will Smith was gettin’ jiggy with it, and Trump wasn’t President. Times were so much easier back then!

Well, not for budding film students Heather, Mike and Josh, who packed up their filming equipment in a car and headed to Burkittsville, Maryland to make a documentary about the urban legend of the Blair Witch. (The Blair Witch Project (1999))

They start off by interviewing locals, and capture a few key details that set up the rest of the film and its sequels. It is claimed that Rustin Parr was a bloke who lived in the woods and kidnapped several children in the 1940s. 

Why? Because the Blair Witch told him to do so. Two fishermen confirm the legends of the woods being haunted, and mention some lass called Robin Weaver.

Kidnapped in 1888, she returned 3 days later, claiming the witch was “an old woman whose feet never touched the ground."

Having heard the tales and waited out the warnings, they begin their journey and head to their first stop, Coffin Rock. Supposedly, 5 men were murdered in a ritualistic fashion here in the 19th century, and their bodies disappeared without a trace.

The next day, they continue their travels, and their ordeal begins. They arrive at an old cemetery which is made up of cairns (piles of rocks which turn out to have ritualistic meaning) and camp nearby. Noises are heard round the tent all night, like twigs snapping, but they reduce this to woodland creatures. 

The following day, they realise they are lost and cannot find the car. The activity escalates, but is found to be unexplainable. 

They then begin to fight between each other, and encounter a section of humanoid stick figures hanging from the trees. Their evening entertainment of weird noises around the tent resumes, but this time the laughter of children is added to the remix. Something then attacks their tent, sending them fleeing from their campsite. 

Some people will just never like dubstep.

They return to their tent, and discover that their possessions have been rifled through, and slime covers Josh’s stuff. The fighting ensues, and Josh straight-up fucks-off.

His screams are then heard one night, and Heather and Mike deduce it to be the witch’s fabrication to draw them out of their tent and into her grasp. 

Her trap is confirmed when Heather finds a bundle of sticks the next morning containing a ritualistic goody-bag containing what appears to be left of Josh. 

That same night, she records her infamous apology video in a style not dissimilar to most YouTubers who have been caught being racist/homophobic/[insert any terrible thing]. 

Once again, Josh’s screams are heard and they follow them to a house bearing demonic symbols and the bloody handprints of children. Not the aesthetic I myself would go for, but it worked for the Blair Witch...

Mike and Heather stumble into the basement, and we witness our favourite vloggers being killed in the manner described earlier in the film:

One child would face the corner of the basement while the other was being slaughtered. The last shot of the film is of Mike standing in the corner of the basement, suggesting that Heather is the first to die at the hands of the witch.

The second film (Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)) follows up on these events a year after the footage was found. A gaggle of fans of the original film troop to Burkittsville to explore the legend and the circumstances of the kidnapping of Heather, Mike and Josh.

This film is messy and complicated, and it’s for that reason that I don’t want to waste 8,000 words on a film that is actually ignored by the film series. So, I’m going to give you a tl;dr, instead:

Basics, this film documents the group of fans and tourists being turned against each other by the witch. They go to the house where shit reportedly went down, and set up surveillance cameras to document potential activity.

It’s the first film, but with hell of a lot more activity. And it culminates with the symbolic hanging of someone who appears to be inciting the demonic rituals scattered across the film as they are reportedly possessed by the Blair Witch.

Unfortunately, we don’t learn anything new in this film - we simply see the greater extent of her powers.

Tired, yet? 

(Bored, perhaps?)

Our journey is almost over, and it ends with Blair Witch (2016). 

This film ignores the events of the second film, and follows a group of documentary makers as they explore the legend of the Blair Witch - but this time it's not about capturing paranormal activity. They go to investigate a peculiar video on YouTube that proves that Heather - the woman from the OG cult classic - might just be alive.

The brother of Heather leads this group, and focuses this documentary on the desire for closure.

Despite skipping out the Book of Shadows, it basically sticks to that exact premise. Surveillance cameras are set up, and showcases the witch’s methods of turning the crew on each other, but on an even greater level. We even see the witch, alongside a couple other creatures in tow...

It finally gives us behind the scenes insight into the paranormal activity, and ends with everyone dying!

Sigh. 

The Blair Witch Is Based Off Of Urban Legends - And Is Uncomfortably Similar To The Stories

Despite its many flaws, The Blair Witch Project does one thing right: we never see the witch.

But it’s the way that her control of the woods and those within it is portrayed that points to the terrifyingly accurate nature of the witch when compared to other urban legends. 

The film’s fictional legend gives up minimal information regarding the Blair Witch:

We know she was responsible for residents - especially children - going missing throughout the 18th and 20th century, and we know that the locals of Burkittsville claimed that the Blair Witch was the ghost of Elly Kedward, a woman who reportedly practiced witchcraft and was sentenced to death in 1785. 

This salem-witch-what-died-but-didnt-really-die-no-one-really-knows is a common basis of the urban legends that will be explored later in this post, but it's the other attributes of the witch that draw her even closer to the claims made around these cases.

The focus of this is that the Blair Witch represents the crone, one of the core concepts of paganism and many other ancient religions. Of the few glimpses we see of a creature that could be the witch and the descriptions of her made by the locals of Burkittsville, we piece together the image of an elderly, monstrous being.

Take this clip from the final film in the saga:

This unnatural-looking humanoid bears a resemblance to the claims of witches in folklore, such as breasts sagging below waistlines, or bones jutting out of their flesh. Add on top of this the animalistic claims from the original movie - like that one woman claiming she saw her arm which was coated with dark hair - and we arrive at a rather monstrous being.

But this animalistic account does not merely echo her ugliness; it forges the link between the witch and her powers over the woods she resides in.

As the maiden becomes the mother, and the mother becomes the crone, her connection with nature grows. It reaches the extent from which her connection with nature is greater than that of her male counterparts, threatening almighty patriarchy and cursing her as the evil witch she is!!1!

Furthermore, it's not difficult to see the links between the woods she controls, and the imagery of life and fertility. Add a smattering of rumours about kidnapped children, and the house of Rustin Parr becomes a womb. 

(Less PMS, more blood.)

More so, by harnessing the powers of nature, she blurs the boundaries between the genders. Heck, she even goes as far as to blur the boundaries between reality and the reality she creates for her victims! 

She tricks them into falling out with each other, she confuses them by creating this unnavigable wood, and she ensnares them into her invisible trap.

Or, translated into simple terms, the Blair Witch fulfills the concept of the Monstrous-Feminine, a theory conjured up by Barbara Creed. On one hand it suggests women are either portrayed as the victim within horror films, and on the other it suggests that when the woman becomes monstrous, she takes on extreme attributes regarding the female reproductive body.

Guess which one the Blair Witch is. 

But this theory didn’t start with Babs sitting in a room and getting her feminist on - Creed deconstructs notions that can be traced back to the era of the Salem witch trials. Each and every urban legend starts here, when it was #on-trend to burn your local witch. 

The Blair Witch is the puppet master in these films.

And she is not the only one that is pulling the strings.

The Real Urban Legends About Witches That You Need To Know About 

“So, the Blair Witch is some chick who hasn’t shaved in 3 months and has a metaphorical vagina?”

Ok, fair enough. 

The Blair Witch isn’t directly based on a specific urban legend, so yes, delete the sage from your Amazon basket and buy those limited edition poptarts, instead.

My little ghoul - this is The Paranormal Periodical. You didn’t think I’d let you leave without informing you of that witch roaming around your local area, would you?

‘Course not. Here are the 13 real urban legends of witches that’ll scare the shizz outta you. 

#1 - Naale Baa

We trade in deep woodland in Maryland for Karntaka, India for this local legend. And within minutes of arriving, you’ll spot the word ‘naale baa’ on the walls - a decoration not dissimilar to that seen in Rustin Parr’s crib.

It is claimed that by writing these words on their walls they can deter the witch that wanders from house to house in search of her husband.

Glammed up in full bridal wear, Nale Ba (as she is also known) supposedly attempts to entice the man of the house, and then curse the family with bad luck.

In the 1990s, this urban legend faced a particular resurgence, and even evolved to claim that she would imitate the voices of victim’s family members to encourage them to open the door. But when the door is opened, you die!

How? No idea.

Am I still scared? Hell yeah.

But I’m not the only one concerned about this witch - claims that multiple men in Thailand just disappeared from their beds in the middle of the night were pinned onto this urban legend.

#2 - The Bell Witch

This is probably the most famous legend regarding a witch puppeteering an innocent family’s life.

The story starts in 1817. A family begin to witness signs of paranormal activity on their farm that targets the man of the house and his daughter, Betsy. A variety of large animals are seen across their farm and follow the family and their slaves. Strange noises then begin to fill the house, like invisible chains being dragged on the floor, or dogs fighting. Betsy repeatedly claims that she can see a little girl playing on the swings.

But this friendly ghost then begins to attack the child, slapping her and scarring her with pins.

The man of the house then begins to demand answers about these spooky shenanigans, and straight up asks the spirit what the shit is going on.

The spirit gives ‘em a lowdown of her backstory - a bit like those clips from the X Factor where they use Katy Perry’s Firework over the top of this 16 year old girl’s turmoil regarding GCSE maths - and claims that she is "Old Kate Batts' witch". 

‘Couple of convos later and they deduce that the farm rests on a Native American burial ground, and the spirit has been disturbed. 

Yet despite the specificity of this legend, the haunting sticks to familial lines we see with Naale Baa and the Blair Witch:

The witch claims she will leave - but she will return in 7 years. She kept her promise, and haunted Betsy when she achieved her womanly purpose of shitting out a baby and having a family of her own.

#3 - The Perron Family Farmhouse

This case was the inspiration behind the original Conjuring movie, founding one of the most iconic horror film series to date - and it’s clear to see why.

I’ve already done a fully-fledged post on this classic tale, but here’s a tl;dr for people hoping not to delve too deep into the haunting…

The Perron family made the mistake of moving onto the land once owned and now haunted by Bathsheba Sherman, a witch from the 19th century.

With increasingly violent activity beginning to haunt the family - which culminated in the possession of the mother of the house - this has earned its place as one of the scariest tales of terror to feature on this blog.

#4 - Mary Evelyn Ford

She was burned at the stake for her witchcraft. 

She was buried in a steel lined grave, and her casket was covered with concrete to keep her trapped in. 

Oh, and she was 5 years old. 

It is claimed that Mary will wander ‘round the cemetery or stand trapped within the protective fencing around her graveside, making faces at mourners and enticing them towards her final resting place. From there she will suck you into the depths where her body now lies, and use your vitality for strength!

#5 - The Three Legged Lady of Mississippi

The American road trip. 

A classic coming-of-adventure filled with freedom, spotify playlists you accidentally stream via your data, and running over people that are already dead.

No? Just me?

The story goes that there’s one road in Mississippi which is haunted by The Three Legged Lady. If you honk your horn three times, she will knock on the roof of the car, and race your car to the end of the road, hitting it with her body throughout the short journey.

Why?

Her origins, like most urban legends, have been subject to a lot of dispute, but there are 2 claims which follow this tale:

One side to the story claims she was the innocent victim of a sacrifice by a satanic cult, whilst the other side claims she doesn’t actually have three legs. 

She’s holding her daughter’s leg, which was severed off when she was run over by a car. It is said that she is still looking for the rest of her daughter.

#6 - The Skinwalkers of Arizona

Our road trip doesn’t stop there, however - this time we are heading for the Navajo region of Arizona. 

Supposedly, when you’re sailing down the highway, something will tap on your window, and you’ll catch a glance of a skinwalker. These humanoid, mutated beings were shapeshifters that were the witch doctors representing the evil within Navajo society.

This urban legend even featured in a court case when a woman was found brutally murdered!

Heck, there is actually a specific region of Arizona - Skinwalker Ranch - from which you are sure to these mystical beings.

#7 - Goody Cole, The Witch of Hampton

This urban legend sticks to the minimalist aesthetic, but nevertheless has earned its reputation in Hampton.

The story goes that a woman accused of being a witch was found dead in her house, and thus, to ensure this bitch stays dead, they bury her with a stake and horseshoe. She says six feet under, but her powers prevail; she curses those that happen to go past her grave.

Her curses stick to those sailing on the river by her burial site, including that one time she reportedly brewed a storm for an innocent girl enjoying a summer’s day on a sailboat who just so happened to be mocking her past.

Not a good day for yachting with father, then?

#8 - The Curse of Jonathon Buck’s Tomb

Okay, this one’s fucking creepy. 

And I love it.

Jonathon Buck was one of the main lads in charge of the Salem witch trials, and condemned many a woman to death by burning. Unfortunately, his attempts to rid one woman of her alleged powers failed, and she scarred his tombstone with a burn mark in the shape of a leg.

No, seriously. 

Whenever the tomb is moved, the mark reappears. 

#9 - Mary Nohl’s Witch House

This origins of this tale can be traced to much more recent events, but carries the essence of an urban legend that rumoured witches cannot escape from. 

Mary Nohl was a sculptor famed for her wacky art and weird displays that decorated her house and gardens. The local residents petitioned for it to be demolished, but it was placed on the National Register, instead.

It is here that the rumours began to swell:

The legend claims that her husband and son drowned in a nearby lake, so, she created these sculptures to watch out for them and await their return to their home. But it was discovered that she never had any children, voiding the rumours conjured up by teenagers after late night visits to this spectacular house.

#10 - The Pendle Witches

I’ve already covered this gaggle of witches and the legends they’ve left on Pendle Hill, but here’s a quick recap for those that haven’t already checked out that post:

The Pendle witches were a group of peasants who practiced dark and mysterious magic. From neighbours getting ill, to strange effigies being found containing hair and teeth, there was more than enough evidence to send them to trial.

It was on this hill that they were sentenced to death, and it was on this hill that they were hung for their crimes. But their witchy behaviour didn’t stop with their deaths.

Peculiar happenings still haunt Pendle hill…

#11 - The Surrey Witch

Our next urban legend is also resident to the UK, and even takes its form in the same era. 

In the 17th century, a white witch lived in a cave in Surrey, and was known for lending things to her neighbours. All you had to do was stand on the boulder outside her cave and ask!

But one day, some bloke tried his luck, and asked for her cauldron. She was chill with it, but said he must return it by a deadline. He missed the due date, and lost 5% off his final mark he fled to escape her potential wrath. 

He fled to Frensham church, from which the cauldron has been utilised for centuries. I wonder if the witch is still out there looking for it?

#12 - Tituba, The Voodoo Queen

Okay, so this witch might not have an urban legend tied to her memory, but her past mirrors the Blair Witch’s own story so it’s freakalicious, regardless...

Tituba was actually the first woman accused of practicing witchcraft in 1692. She even confessed to her crimes, and threw two other witches under the bus!

(So much for solidarity, guys.)

But her story follows a unique twist, as she was believed to have come to the colony she later resided in to encourage local children to take up Voodoo. Her focus on children and thus her maternal portrayal is a simplified reflection of the Blair Witches own metaphorical genitalia. 

#13 - The Witch House, aka The Jonathon Corwin House

Our final urban legend belongs to one of the most historical buildings in Salem:

No, really, it’s the only structure in Salem still standing that had a hand in the witch trials. Not only has it witnessed dark and twisted histories of innocent people, it’s still home to some of them.

Jonathon Corwin - the former owner of the house - was a judge in the trials, and thus carried the memories of the trials with him back to his home, but with reports of torture in the basement and even his own burial down there after his murder, I think we can safely that many myths and legends will circle this house.

Add in a visit from the Ghost Adventures crew, and we can stamp on the Zak Bagan’s seal of approval.

No wonder it’s considered the most haunted house in Salem!

Where Have They Gone Now: Slash

Slash was born Saul Hudson in London, England in 1965. He was named after the cartoonist Saul Steinberg by his African American fashion designer mother, Olivia Hudson. Her client’s included some very famous rock stars including Ringo Starr, Janis Joplin, and David Bowie, whom she dated. His father, Arthur was a British artist, who designed album covers for artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. He would say this later about his unique background.

“As a musician, I've always been amused that I'm both British and black; particularly because so many American musicians seem to aspire to be British while so many British musicians, in the 'Sixties in particular, went to such great pains to be black." Around the age of five, he would move to Los Angeles eventually living off and on with his mother and grandparents after his parents separated in 1974. He was given the nickname Slash by one of his mother’s friends, actor Seymour Cassel, who would say that the young Saul was always darting around from place to place. With classmate, Steven Adler, Slash decided to form a band in 1979. Although the high school band never happened, he did learn an instrument at this time. The future Guns N’ Roses member began to take music lessons to learn bass guitar , but he soon switched to lead guitar after the first lesson. The two friends would finally put together a band with Duff McKagan called Road Crew in 1983. The band’s name originated from a popular song by Motörhead. The band was quickly disbanded by Slash himself due to a variety of reasons including no lead singer and Adler did not want to be there sometimes. One other thing to be noted was the fact that Slash had been a champion BMX rider as a teen, but when music came along he gave it up to concentrate on the guitar. He would sometimes practice his instrument as much as 12 hours a day.

The next band that Slash joined was Hollywood Rose, which featured future GNR members Izzy Stradlin and Axl Rose. The band was very short lived, so he moved on to a group called Black Sheep, as well as an audition for Poison. He was not chosen because he did not fit the image, but after the group became well known Slash did not hesitate to disparage the band every chance that he got. In the summer of 1985, Slash formally joined Guns N’ Roses. Before one of the shows in late 1985, he shoplifted a black felt top hat and a silver belt, which became his trademark headwear for the rest of his career. The guitarist wrapped the belt around the brim of the hat as a buckle. In 1993, upon the release of the cover album, The Spaghetti Incident, Slash wrote several songs that he hoped would be part of the follow up album to Use Your Illusion I and II. Both Axl Rose and Duff McKagan rejected all of his songs for any new album. The tensions in the band were at an all time high despite the unbelievable success of the group. By the fall of 1996, things had become obvious to Slash that any collaboration with Axl Rose was going to be pretty much impossible. He officially announced that he was leaving the band that same year. In his statement he would write, “Axl and I have not been capable of seeing eye to eye on Guns N' Roses for some time. We tried to collaborate, but at this point, I'm no longer in the band." Over the next 20 years, he would go into further detail on his reasons for leaving the band, which included the departures of Stradlin and Adler, Axl Rose’s chronic lateness to everything, and his desire to manipulate through legal channels control of the band.

In 1994, the guitarist had created Slash’s Snake Pit, which included Guns N’ Roses future ex-members Matt Sorum and Gilby Clark, as well as Mike Inez from Alice in Chains and Eric Dover from Jellyfish. In 1995, the group released its debut album, It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere, which received positive reviews and sold fairly well. The major quality pointed out was the fact that it did not follow the alternative music trend of the time. In 1996, he disbanded the group after a lengthy tour only to reform the group 3 years later in 1999 with new members. This album did not perform as well in sales nor with critics. The album received very mixed reviews, which led the band to opening for AC/DC during their 2000 tour instead of a bigger headlining tour. The group eventually did a theater tour, but they broke up in 2002. That same year, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan, and Slash reunited for a tribute concert to Randy Castillo. This led to the creation of the band Velvet Revolver, which also included singer Scott Weiland. Izzy Stradlin had initially joined as well, but he soon quit because of the inclusion of a lead singer. They would go on to release the album Contraband in 2004, which debuted at number one on the US charts and sold 2 million copies. The song “Slither” would go on to win the band a Grammy for Best Rock Song. In the summer of 2007, they released their second album Libertad, which did not achieve the same kind of success as their debut. A year later the band fired Scott Weiland from the group due to his personal drug issues. The late singer had said that the band was officially broken up, but this was not the case. In 2010, the group began to record new material for a third album as they looked for a new singer. They could not agree upon one, so they went on hiatus again despite recording nine new demos. The band is still on hiatus to this day.

In September 2008, Slash began working on his debut solo album, which may sound strange because he had these other side projects as well. The guitarist would talk about doing his own album and the freedom that provided. It’s nice to “take a little bit of a break from all the politics and the democracy that is a band and just sort of do my own thing for a little bit.” The use of the word democracy might seem strange knowing his history with GNR. The album included a large roster of musical guests as well including Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, Dave Grohl, Chris Cornell and Iggy Pop. Former Guns N’ Roses members Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Stephen Adler also collaborated on the album. Their continuing work together throughout the years speaks volumes to the fact that Axl Rose was probably the problem in Guns N’ Roses. The album would go onto reach number three on the Billboard charts in the US, which actually led to a follow up album with his new backing band called the Conspirators and singer, Myles Kennedy. He would release Apocalyptic Love in 2012 followed by a tour in 2014 opening for Aerosmith. In 2018, a third album was released by the band entitled Living the Dream. In 2016, something happened that some fans thought would never happen again. Slash reunited with Axl Rose for Guns N’ Roses. The first show was during the 2016 Coachella music festival in California. The subsequent tour was quite aptly named Not In This Lifetime.
