Contrary to the title and framing, this is about a landlord-on-landlord slap fight.
While the very real danger of these illegal rooming houses and their innumerable code violations are actually a lethal risk, hereâs what the protesters interviewed had to say:
âMichelle Gauthier, who also attended the rally and is a landlord herself, says illegal rooming houses have been a growing issue in Brampton over the past two years.
She says about 30 per cent of the houses on her street have turned into rentals and illegal rooming houses.
"We really love that feeling of community, and we're afraid it's disappearing," Gauthier said.ââ
Hmmm
âMany residents at the protest expressed their support for the city's Residential Rental Licensing program.
The program, which began this January, is a pilot project that aims to crack down on rental units that violate health and safety rules.
Last week, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said the project has led to 4,700 home inspections and over 600 penalty notices.
Gauthier said 20 students were living in a neighbouring house for a year. She said they were frequently loud at night and were difficult to manage.
After the rental licensing program was introduced, she said the students were replaced with a family.â
Iâm sure those students, who clearly didnât have many options, are totally fine. Somewhere.
âSome landlords have criticized the pilot project, saying it costs them money, makes them do paperwork and, often, their tenants are to blame for the issues flagged by city inspectors.â
Much of the blame, unsurprisingly, seems to be falling on international students and foreigners in general, as opposed to the landlords.

I want to second that other anon on the Brampton situation as someone who was born and raised there until I moved away at the end of 2020; yea its the fucking city planning and infrastructure that sucks. Apologies for long ass rant:
Every. Single. New house in Brampton built since before I was born has been a 3-5 bedroom, single family cookie-cutter home. Its especially obvious in the north side where all the recent development is. Every neighborhood is a labrynth, I lived in the same house for 20 years and could still get lost walking around my neighborhood cause of the damn maze-like layout AND CAUSE EVERY HOUSE LOOKS THE DAMN SAME. It takes 20 minutes on average to walk to your nearest bus stop and anywhere between 20 mins to an hour for the bus to show up. If you don't have access to a car, you're fucked.
But even if you DO have a car, there's still nothing to DO there. 90% of the city is JUST HOUSES. Heart Lake, Chinguacousy Park and Professor's Lake are like the only major recreational areas, and out of those Heart Lake is the most amount of nature left there; almost EVERYTHING is zoned for residential. Besides that, there's the big malls, and that's basically it. If you work IN Brampton, you probably either work an industrial job, or a minimum wage service job. Most 9-5 career jobs are in Mississauga or Toronto, which you then have to commute by car CAUSE THERES BARELY ANY TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE. I have a whole other rant about the 410 too, but at this point I'll just say it makes the 401 look like a pleasant drive.
Brampton doesn't suck cause of the people living in it, Brampton sucks because it doesn't function like a city should. And it doesn't function like a city should cause it was never designed to be more than a place to hold workers for Mississauga and Toronto when they aren't working.
Also more housing in Brampton won't help the housing crisis in the slightest, unless they're forced to be stupid affordable. New homes are easily several million, even 25yo houses are selling for over a million. Five years ago $1k/month for a 1-bedroom basement apartment was considered dirt cheap, its definitely much more expensive now. There'd have to be legislation involved to force the prices down.

"At the end of 1809, a group of prisoners escaped from Robben Island probably using a whale boat to reach the mainland. The escapees included both Stuurman brothers and their two companions. After splitting up to help avoid detection, Bootsman Stuurman was recaptured. However, David Stuurman, Michiel and Wildschut, managed to rejoin the Xhosa. A long stand-off ensued, during which time Governor Cuyler tried to entice Stuurman to surrender but to no avail. Stuurman lived among the Xhosa throughout the fourth and fifth frontier wars and was not recaptured until near the end of 1819 after being at large for a decade.
Stuurman was returned to Robben Island at the end of December 1819. Following another escape in August 1820, Stuurman was recaptured and sentenced to be transported for life to New South Wales. After being forced to watch as some of his surviving fellow escapees (some died during the attempt) were flogged, branded or hanged, Stuurman was returned temporarily to Robben Island until room could be found on a convict transport to convey him to the Australian penal colonies. Under the Dutch, it had been possible for Cape Colony officials to banish miscreants. But under the English, the option of transporting convicts to the Australian penal colonies became a possibility. As early as 1815, Governor Somerset at the Cape requested permission from London to have people transported from the Colony to New South Wales. In response, the Admiralty instructed convict transports to stop at the Cape.7Cape Colony courts found transportation a particularly attractive option in dealing with its various non-European populations. Sending Khoisan, slaves and others across the ocean with little hope of ever returning home provided a much more exemplary punishment than simply shipping them to Robben Island, in sight of Table Bay. Even a sentence to seven yearsâ transportation to the Australian penal colonies effectively became a life sentence. The few Australian Aboriginal convicts who survived incarceration were repatriated when their sentence expired, but Khoisan were simply left to their own devices.
Overcrowding and illness on convict transports meant that it could be a long wait between sentencing and the sentence of transportation actually being carried into effect. Stuurman remained at the Cape following his 2 September 1820 trial through to February 1823 when the Brampton arrived at Table Bay. The transport had sufficient room to take on board convicts from the Cape.
Another of the fourteen convicts loaded onto the Brampton with Stuurman was also described as a âHottentotâ, Jantje Piet, convicted for murder. Piet was to have been executed on 29 April 1820, but the Governor of Port Elizabeth, Sir Rufane Donkin, âdid not think it decorousâ to carry the sentence into effect because this was the day on which the accession to the throne of King George IV was proclaimed at the Cape of Good Hope. Instead, Donkin granted the man a respite and wrote to Earl Bathurst, Secretary for War and the Colonies, for consent to have Pietâs sentence commuted to transportation to New South Wales.
On 28 July 1822, the Brampton sailed from London under the command of Master Sam Moore, a violent and abusive man, and with Surgeon Superintendent Morgan Price on board. Its cargo was to comprise Irish men under sentences ranging from seven years to life, as well as several free settlers. Most were from the labouring classes, with occupations ranging from errand boy, shearer and ploughman to brogue maker, music dancing master and linen weaver. Some were known to be rebels. Many had already spent a considerable time in gaol prior to departing from the Cove of Cork on 8 November 1822. The convicts were guarded by a detachment of the Third Regiment (Buffs) during the voyage."

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's foreign minister on Thursday hit out at Canada for allowing a float in a parade depicting the 1984 assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards, perceived to be glorification of violence by Sikh separatists.
"I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence," S. Jaishankar told reporters in New Delhi while commenting about the tableau in a parade.
"I think it is not good for relationships, not good for Canada," he said.
Canada's High Commissioner for India also condemned the incident at a parade by Sikh activists in the Canadian city of Brampton. Video circulated in recent days on the internet showed a tableau from the parade featuring Gandhi wearing a blood-stained white saree with her hands up as turban-clad men pointed guns at her. A poster behind the scene read: "Revenge".
"I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi," Cameron MacKay said on Twitter.
"There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities."
Reuters was not immediately able to reach the organisers of the parade for comment.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by two Sikh bodyguards after she allowed the storming of the holiest Sikh temple, aimed at flushing out Sikh separatists who demanded an independent homeland to be known as Khalistan.
The storming of the temple angered Sikhs around the world. The death toll in the attack remains disputed, with Indian authorities putting it in the hundreds and Sikh groups in the thousands.
Canada has the highest population of Sikhs outside their home state of Punjab in India.
Earlier this year India summoned Canada's High Commissioner to convey concern over pro-Khalistan protesters in Canada who breached the security of India's diplomatic mission and consulates.
Bilateral commercial relations between the two countries are worth $100 billion, which includes $70 billion of Canadian portfolio investment, according to Indian figures.

The Brampton Hut Murder
Janice Carol Weston, unsolved murder
Solicitor, Janice Weston was found dead in a ditch by a lay-by on the A1 in between Brampton and Brockden, Cambridgeshire on 11 September 1983.
36-year-old solicitor, JaniceWestonâs body was found at 9 am on a Sunday, in a ditch on the northbound carriageway of the A1 about half a mile south of the Brampton Hut roundabout by a cyclist. She had been beaten to death by several vicious blows to the head using a car jack which was found discarded close by.
A detective said that he believed that the killer had possibly lost his temper during an argument and had gone berserk. She was found fully clothed, with no sign of sexual assault or robbery. A post-mortem examination revealed that she had fought against her attacker.
According to Janiceâs husband, she had a bit of a habit of picking up hitchhikers when she was making a journey. although he had told her not to and in fact he thought she had stopped doing that.
Curiously Janice Weston had told her husband and her friends that despite her husband being abroad she intended to stay at home in London that weekend. She had spent Saturday in London shopping, getting a new spare wheel for her car and visiting her office at Lincolns Inn to catch up on some work during the afternoon. She was last seen alive at around 4.15 pm on Saturday 10th September 1983.
According to traffic reports and an approximate time that Janice left her home in Holland Park, London, she probably didnât reach Huntingdonshire until after 9 pm on Saturday night. It seems likely that she was heading for her âWeekend retreatâ, a country house in Clopton, Northamptonshire.
It is possible that detectives are linking the story of the tyre with the fact that forensics found oil beneath Janice Westonâs fingernails but I think it is more likely that she had changed the tyre in London and done something else, such as checking the oil in the Brampton Hut Layby.
I do not see that a killer is going to kill a woman with a carjack, discard the jack but not the wheel and then drive her stolen car to Camden, London then dispose of the wheel. I really feel that is an error in the investigation.
Janice's husband was arrested after the body was identified, he was held for 55 hours and questioned at length but he was released without charge. It had taken three days to identify the body due to her having been so severely beaten. Hence Tony Weston had returned to England before his wife was identified so police had no idea that he was in fact in France at the time of his wifeâs murder.
I personally see a number of faults and failings in this case and the way in which it was handled, hence I am sitting here almost forty years on from the killing, reporting that the case remains unsolved.
I will leave this one here and be back with another case very soon. In the meantime, if you can help me by leaving me a tip and buying me a coffee by clicking the link HERE it would mean a lot to me.
As always, if you would like to discuss this case or indeed any other then please get in touch, I love to hear from you.

From The Ashes Part 1: My Thoughts and Feelings
Hey all! Diya again, and today Iâm back with my in depth review of âFrom the Ashesâ by Jesse Thistle, this is going to be part 1 of a little post series I prepared talking about this book! In this part Iâm just going to be discussing my thoughts and opinions of the book, what I liked and didnât like etc. etc.Â
Before we get right into it if you want any book recommendations you can look at this list that I posted for the month of June!
Without further adieu letâs hop right in!
âFrom The Ashesâ is an autobiography and memoir written by Jesse Thistle. Jesse is a MĂ©tis man who had a rough childhood; growing up in rural Saskatchewan, he and his 2 brothers were abandoned by their parents as toddlers. After a brief but rough time in the foster care system, they moved east to be raised by hisâquite franklyâclueless white grandparents in Brampton, Ontario. Jesse documents his struggles growing up in a broken home with drug addicted parents, a vice he himself would fall into years later. It tells the heartbreaking story of drug addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and the cycle between them all. He talks about how he turned his life around, staying strong in the face of what would have broken many before him, reclaiming his MĂ©tis heritage and of all his experiences shaped him into the person he is today.
[Jesse with his mother and two brothers, before moving to Brampton]
For me, thereâs three things that I typically look for in a good book;
WritingÂ
Character DevelopmentÂ
And Themes
So letâs talk about them!
In regards to the writing I actually found myself really sucked into the story, as not only was the content super engaging the easy the book is written was also super interesting. Instead of linear storytelling, the chapters are almost episodic in nature, with each chapter being a self contained vignette; the contents of one chapter not necessarily being continued into the next. The stories were still connected by theme and did seem to follow a chronological string of events, but it was a little difficult to adjust to at first, although, I think this just works to make the book even more special.Â
Another thing I found interesting in the writing was that a lot of the stories âespecially early onâ arenât completely finished or at least donât feel complete, as they reach this high point or climax, only for the chapter to end and a new story to begin. However, it was really astounding to find out that Jesse had been functionally illiterate and that he was able to overcome that and make such a well written, unconventional novel. It isâin my opinionâ one of his greatest displays of resilience, going from not being able to read or write to best-selling author is beyond impressive and inspirational.Â
When it comes to âcharactersâ it's a bit hard to discuss as they are real people as opposed to fictional characters, but Iâm still going to call them characters for the sake of this review.Â
I couldnât stand Jesseâs grandparents, especially his grandfather, and I felt like Jesse was very careful in not directly criticizing them, but their actions definitely spoke for themselves. His grandparents not only raise one son to be a drug addict who abuses his wife and kids and then abandons them as toddlers [Jesseâs father], but they also didnât learn from their experience and went to raise their grandsons in the same manner.Â
[Jesse's parents, Blanche Morrissette, and Cyril Thistle in 1977]
Jesseâs Grandfather beat him and his brothers, he expected them to work without spending any quality time together, and his grandmother was often neglectful, ignoring him and his siblings unless she needed something;Â
âGrandma without her smokes was scary. She got aggravated, which usually meant weâd get more chores. [pg. 61]â.Â
All of this just got me so angry that they didnât seem to learn from the events with Jesseâs father, not that theyâre completely to blame, and it was just so frustrating that Jesse wasnât able to fully criticize them and say anything really negative about them.
And as for themes, the biggest ones are addiction, homelessness and intergenerational trauma, all of which often go hand in hand, especially in Indigenous populations, and it definitely doesnât shy away from any of the nitty gritty details. It is a very intense look at these issues and Jesse doesn't try to hide any of the things he was willing to do and the things that happened to him as a consequence of those actions. The things talked about arenât things that the average person wouldnât even consider; starving just so you can get another high or purposely going to jail to receive healthcare, or climbing on the side of a building.
[A composite of Jesse's mugshots]
The book leaves a very strong impression, as the plot might not always be action packed but while reading it always has an underlying feeling of anxiety or dread, as even though we know the story has a happy ending, it could always get worse before it gets better. The second half of the book especially gives a really profound look into how people end up homeless and addicted.Â
Onto the things that I didnât necessarily love, as I talked about before, I wished Jesse had been a little more critical of the people in his life, instead of just himself. I can see why he may want to pander to his family a little to avoid conflict, but I didnât feel like this was a real reflection of his own life, as there wasnât a proper critic of the people in his life. Even as itâs mentioned that Jesseâs grandfather was raised in a similar manner, I donât feel that that excuses his actions.Â
âGrandma once told me that Grandpa was that âwayâ with discipline because his pappy was that âwayâ with him, and that he got it worse than us. [pg. 104]â
The book then goes on to describe the childhood that his grandfather lived, and that the manner in which he was raised was all he knew, and that thatâs how he believed you should treat kids. Itâs a prime example of Intergenerational Traumaâ something Iâll be expanding more on very soon in my next post âand makes it hard to find fault in people who were brought up in abusive and neglectful homes. However, his grandfatherâs childhood only explains his actions, it doesnât excuse them.Â
It was his grandfatherâs responsibility to take a look at himself and decide to make a change in his actions, and unlearn the habits ingrained in him, but as we know that isnât what happened. And it isn't what happens in most peopleâs cases. The idea of upholding âtraditionâ and raising oneâs children the way they were raised even if those traditions and habits are harmful is an extremely common norm in the society we live in. It is hard to oppose the established status quo and try and change, even if it is for the better.Â
I believe that thatâs one of the things that makes âFrom the Ashesâ so special. Under all the melodrama and tension, the tragedy of someone falling into the vicious cycle of homelessness and drugs and prison, lays a beautiful story of someone who wanted to change and decided to change. To fight against every obstacle in their opposition, every system that is in place to keep them living a unfulfilling, miserable life. To see someone go from a point lower than most will ever experience in their lives and rise from the ashes, to better themselves and their future generation.Â
[Jesse and his daughter, Rose Thistle]
Above all âFrom the Ashesâ is a story about change, about breaking yourself down to build yourself up again. It is a book that has deeply touched me, and one I would recommend to anyone who feels dissatisfied with their position in life. It inspires and will continue to inspire those who read it, giving them hope that they donât have to stay complacent with the hand life has dealt them, and that they are deserving of a better life for themselves.
âMom used to think I was mute, but I could speak fine, I just chose not to. My words belonged to me, they were the only thing I had that were mine, and I didnât trust anyone enough to share them [pg. 18].â
This quote is from the very beginning of the novel, and works perfectly to set the tone for the book, and Jesseâs development as a person. From someone who would not speak to sharing his story to everyone in the world, I just wanted to say thank you to Jesse Thistle for sharing your life with all of your dear readers, and trusting us with your words.Â

Joe Ricotta gives insight on Best Places in London for Property Investment
This year, prospective homeowners in London must make several important choices, the first of which is how near to the city's center they must be. Nevertheless, the alternatives need not be constrained if the response is "extremely" addressed by "Joe" Ricotta, a real estate developer.
As crucial as the quality of the local housing stock, the variety of transportation options, and the availability of local amenities are factors like a history of excellent price growthâwith capacity to expand in the futureâand regeneration potential.
1: Woolwich, South-East London
Woolwich is the first place suggested by "Joe Ricotta". Five miles downstream from Canary Wharf, Woolwich is emerging as a viable alternative, with Berkeley Homes' multibillion-pound regeneration of the Woolwich Arsenal, which includes 5,000 new homes as well as bars and restaurants, revitalizing the waterfront, and Crossrail set to improve transportation links in 2021.
British Land is to create a five-acre mixed-use complex on inland Woolwich's run-down high street, while Greenwich council has offered ÂŁ40 million to adapt a few historic buildings on the waterfront into arts and cultural spaces.
CBRE predicts that Woolwich will have the highest "regeneration home price growth premium" in London, at 7.6 percent each year.
The river, a lot of green space, including Oxleas Wood and Plumstead Common, made Woolwich an attractive site to invest in real estate.
2: Wembley, North-West London
Located in West London, Wembley has a lot to offer, says 'Joe' Ricotta. It is particularly well-known for hosting the England national football team and Wembley Stadium, one of the world's most iconic event sites.
Wembley is continually being renovated and has evolved into a bustling and active neighborhood with a diverse range of retail outlets. It has a posh retail mall with a theater, restaurants providing a wide range of cuisine, entertainment opportunities, and plenty of green space. Wembley has three stations and three subterranean lines, and it is approximately 12 minutes distant from Central London. Because of these attractions, young professionals are particularly drawn to the area, says Joe Ricotta.
3: Hendon, North-West London
Finally, Joe Ricotta suggested Hendon, one of the most vibrant residential areas in North London, is a wonderful neighborhood with several investment opportunities and attractions. Brent Cross, one of London's largest shopping malls, as well as the Brent Reservoir, often known as the Welsh Harp, with its 170 magnificent hectares of marshland and water, are both located here.
Hendon has a diverse spectrum of architectural styles. Modern detached residences costing several million pounds may be found on Brampton Grove, one of Hendon's most prestigious streets. Families may benefit from excellent schools, parks, and restaurants, as well as excellent infrastructure that gives quick access to the rest of London.

Cockroaches are not just unsightly; they carry harmful bacteria and allergens. Infestations can lead to:
Health Issues: Spread of diseases like salmonella and E. coli.
Allergic Reactions: Cockroach droppings can trigger asthma and allergies.
Structural Damage: Over time, they can damage materials like cardboard and paper.
DIY Solutions: A Temporary Fix
DIY methods may provide immediate relief, but they rarely address the root cause of infestations. Common DIY techniques include:
Using Sprays and Traps: Effective for small infestations but not suitable for large-scale problems.
Sealing Entry Points: Helps reduce new invasions but doesnât eliminate existing pests.
Homemade Remedies: Natural options like boric acid and essential oils are safer but slower to act.
How Professional Cockroach Control in Brampton Stands Out?
Professional pest control services take a comprehensive approach, ensuring thorough eradication. Key advantages include:
Expert Assessment:
Technicians identify the type and extent of infestation.
Customized treatment plans target problem areas effectively.
Advanced Techniques:
Use of high-grade pesticides that are safe for families and pets.
Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
Long-Term Solutions:
Prevention measures to reduce the likelihood of future infestations.
Scheduled follow-ups ensure ongoing protection.
When to Call a Professional?
If you notice recurring infestations despite DIY efforts, itâs time to seek professional help. Common signs include:
Persistent cockroach sightings, even during the day.
Unusual odors from hidden nests.
Droppings and shed skins in kitchens or bathrooms.
Choosing the Right Cockroach Control Service in Brampton:
To ensure effective results, consider the following when hiring a pest control provider:
Reputation: Look for companies with strong customer reviews.
Certifications: Verify licenses and industry accreditations.
Guarantees: Opt for services that offer warranties on their work.
DIY methods can offer short-term relief, but professional cockroach control in Brampton is the key to eliminating infestations for good. With expert solutions, you can protect your home and family from the risks associated with cockroach invasions. Act today to restore a pest-free living environment.
