New York City Guitar Orchestra - Spectra: New Music for Guitar Orchestra - a massive collection (2+ hours) of new works by 18 composers

The New York City Guitar Orchestra, conducted by Jason Sagebiel and Nicoletta Todesco in collaboration with artistic direction by John Olson, releases Spectra, a collection of newly composed works for multiple guitars by such luminaries of the plucked string world as David Leisner, Frederic Hand, David Loeb, William Anderson, and João Luiz. Music for multiple players on the same instrument has grown in recent years, perhaps inspired by the success of percussion ensembles. Works by prominent composers for several bassoons, or flutes, or pianos have made their mark on concert programs. The guitar is a natural fit for similar ventures, inhabiting its own space in the concert music world, increasingly integrated with other instruments but retaining its unique profile. The music and spirited collaboration on this recording reflect the sense of community that is only further enhanced by projects of this sort. The New York City Guitar Orchestra has undertaken an ambitious project of commissioning seventeen new works for multiple guitars. The result is Spectra, an exuberant celebration of the possibilities afforded by the guitar orchestra format and the variety of compositional approaches taken by the composers who were involved in the project.

On today's episode, I talk to composer Doug Bielmeier. Originally from Buffalo, Doug started out playing in indie rock bands before shifting his focus to composition, which he received both bachelors and masters degrees for. His music has been described as an "extension of Xenakis’s early electroacoustic tape pieces", and his albums include 2017's Betty and the Sensory World, 2018's Costa Mesa Rocking Chair, and 2019's Beast of Bodmin Moor. Doug also holds a PhD in education and is a professor at Northeastern University in Boston. In addition to this all, Doug is the creator and host of The Process, a podcast that focuses on the creative process for experimental music. His most recent album Music for Billionaires was released by New Focus Recordings at the end of October, and it is great!

Am I the only one who thinks OPM gets a little dull when Saitama is gone for too long?

There are plenty on the subreddit who always whine whenever there’s no Saitama. Some who in fact, admit they actually skip any chapters without him! Which in my opinion is a huge shame.

Because both the opm world and its rich cast is full of many colorful, interesting characters to be enjoyed and treasured for those who bother to look. And Saitama, especially as a passive protagonist where the world’s real drama and intrigue keeps revolving beyond him, is only one single tip of the iceberg; there’s plenty more to see than just him.

So I would honestly say it’s a bit of the reverse: solely focusing on him all the time is what makes it dull, and using him sparingly when it counts (esp the moments when you miss him most) is what makes it work. And those who only care or follow just for Saitama are sorely missing out on much (or even the majority) of the story.
