German car manufacturer E.GO is aiming for a breakthrough in city cars
With an IPO on Nasdaq, German city car manufacturer E.GO, headquartered in Aachen, has raised almost 270 million euros of fresh capital to expand production.
Building three new factories in Europe and the United States. That is why Next.E.GO Mobile[1], as the company is officially called, went to the American technology stock market last Friday. The IPO took place with the help of a SPAC[2], an empty stock market shell that raises capital to finance an acquisition or merger. E.GO opted for a merger with the SPAC Athena Consumer Acquisition[3] and thus managed to raise 285 million dollars (almost 270 million euros) from the market. This values the merged company at $900 million. And this for a company that has so far produced barely 1,100 cars.
E.GO positions itself as a manufacturer of fully electric city cars and thus stays away from the bitter battle that Tesla is waging with the classic car brands. The latter are increasingly swearing off their cheaper and smaller models. The Aachen company hopes to fill part of that market with its electric city cars.
For example, E.GO currently produces the E.Wave.X, a modernly equipped mini SUV, which has a range of about 240 kilometres and costs just under 25,000 euros. With that price, the German company wants to compete with the Fiat 500 and the Renault Twingo E-Tech. To promote the car, the company already hired Brazilian star footballer Neymar Jr. last year. appointed as ambassador.
Almost bankrupt
Both the IPO and the signing of Neymar are remarkable in themselves. Because the German company was on the verge of bankruptcy a few years ago. Founded in 2015 by German engineer and businessman Günther Schuh, E.GO got off to a rocky start. Four years after its founding, the first small city cars (E.Go Life) rolled off the production line at the Aachen factory, which has a capacity of 15,000 cars. But in 2019, just 540 cars were built due to production teething troubles and delivery problems. A year later, 5,100 cars were planned, but corona hindered progress. E.GO was even forced to close the factory due to a lack of funding.
Bankruptcy was narrowly avoided thanks to a large financial injection from several investors and the ND Group,[4] a Dutch holding company that operates from Eindhoven and is controlled by Nazif Destani. This entrepreneur from North Macedonia amassed his wealth with his company Ecolog[5], which provides logistics support of military operations for, among others, the German, French and American armies.
Three factories
Under the leadership of CEO and chairman Ali Vezvaei, E.GO has worked hard to professionalize the company. With the IPO, the car manufacturer has secured the necessary resources to put itself on the map in the coming years. The company is considering plans to build three new European and American micro-factories so that it can expand the production of its budget cars, the CEO emphasized prior to the stock exchange listing.
In addition to the factory in Aachen, a factory in North Macedonia should open next year. In addition, Bulgaria and Greece are also eligible as a new location, in addition to a production facility in the US. There, E.GO wants to benefit from the subsidy provided by the American Inflation Reduction Act. An investment of $60 million is envisaged for each factory and 30,000 cars could roll off the production line annually at each of those factories.
Vague about orders
Whether E.GO will be such a success remains to be seen. Ali Vezvaei has remained vague in recent days about the number of orders for the mini SUV. He spoke of 'thousands and thousands of orders'. And emphasized that E.GO will continue to focus on those city cars and will not focus on the premium or luxury segment. “There is no need for us to try to test the water there,” the CEO emphasizes. “If you look at the urban segment we serve, it is underserved.”
Only time will tell whether E.GO will find a place in the highly competitive automotive sector. “We are not just another EV company trying to survive by going public,” says the CEO. 'Our focus is mainly on our unique production technology.' He boasts that E.GO can simplify the production process of a car thanks to AI and robotics, resulting in lower costs than a traditional car manufacturer.
Whether that will be enough to entice investors in the coming weeks and months remains to be seen. But the stock market debut was certainly not a direct hit. Because the share fell more than 45 percent to $ 1.41 per share on Friday.

The End of a Legacy: Why the FIATA Failed.
The Fiat 124 Spider also known as the FIATA (because it shares its underpinnings with the Mazda Miata) officially stopped production. Yes, I know, I hate to break it to you but there is now one less sports car on the market with a manual transmission. A car that once existed for twenty years from 1966 to 1985, failed to last more than four years this time around. The Fiat Spider shared its class with the Alfa Romeo Spider (pictured above) which lasted from 1966 to 1994. So why did the 124 Spider with such strong pedigree fail to continue the legacy of its Italian ancestors ? The fact of the matter is, the 124 Spider never had a fighting chance.
The Alfa Romeo and Fiat 124 Spider debuted in the mid 60’s with innovative design and technology. Both were rear wheel drive roadsters designed by Italian carrozzeria Pininfarina. They were ahead of their time with standard Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) engines. The combination of performance and styling made the Spiders standout as an affordable alternative to gas guzzling American muscle cars. The production run lasted so long because improvements were made with every generation. The engine size continued to grow resulting in more power while remaining efficient. By the mid 80’s, Fiat decided to discontinue the Spider. Shortly after purchasing Alfa Romeo, Fiat began to focus solely on its roadster from their newly acquired company. Once the 90’s hit, Alfa Romeo redesigned the Spider’s body for the fourth time in its twenty-eight years of existence. While the new and improved 4th generation design helped with sales of the Spider, it was no match for the new kid on the block. The (NA) Mazda MX-5, aka the Miata. The Japanese roadster was more efficient, reliable and cheaper than the Alfa Romeo. Sales began to slow down for the Spider and eventually Alfa Romeo stopped production in the U.S after 1994.
Fast forward twenty-two years and Fiat introduces an all new 124 Spider at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto show. Looking to capitalize on the Spider’s previous success, Fiat completely reinvented the vehicle. It was originally planned to be an Alfa Romeo, but because Alfa is Fiat’s luxury brand they decided to brand the affordable Spider as a Fiat. It shared the same assembly line in Japan with the car that drove it out of business two decades earlier. The only key differences between the 124 Spider and the Mazda Miata was it’s styling, suspension and engine. The FIATA had a 1.4 liter turbo motor rated at 160 Horsepower and the Miata a naturally aspirated 2.0 rated at 155 HP. After three years of production, the Miata improved its engine in 2019 by increasing performance to produce 181 HP. The FIATA on the other hand was always equipped with its laggy, turbo 1.4 liter engine. A motor that may meet efficiency standards in Italy but doesn’t provide the thrill you expect from a rear wheel drive, two seater roadster. The 124 Spider Abarth is just as underwhelming. The Abarth featured in this article comes with some badging differences, a quad exhaust and four more horsepower. The Fiat 500 Abarth was a real difference compared to the standard 500. The exhaust note sounded like it came out of a Ferrari. On the 124 Abarth it sounds decent, but not nearly as tuned as the 500.
The FIATA had remained the same for all four years, while the more reliable Miata improved. The Mazda has once again terminated its roadster rival. But it didn’t do it by just creating a better performing engine during its shared production run. The Miata brand remains champion of the roadsters because of its history. The Miata’s production run is now going on thirty plus years, surpassing that of the Spider. It’s forever been known for being the only reliable and affordable sports car on the market. It has evolved in this space and has remained relevant due to its positive consumer reports. Fiat on the other hand has had terrible consumer reviews since it returned to the U.S in 2011. The brand had already been tarnished prior to the resurrection of the 124. I mean if people recognize your brand with an acronym like; Fix It Again Tony, you’re going to have a tough time selling cars. More and more people going through a mid life crisis are choosing sporty SUV’s and electric vehicles over sports cars. So how could the FIATA have stayed relevant in a space that’s been dominated by one car for the last thirty years? Well, it would have had to evolve, which Fiat just simply failed to do. It should have looked back on its past and modeled its Pininfarina designed predecessors. It could have achieved this by evolving with the times, adopting new technologies and competing with modern standards. Do you think Amazon got to where they are by selling books the entire time? Or would Netflix still be around if they continued to just deliver DVD’s to your home? The twin cam, fuel injected engine found in the previous Spiders was revolutionary back in the day. The Spider was a pioneer in the car industry, with mechanical innovations still used til this day. This most recent Spider was never anything special. It just proved to us that Fiat’s days are numbered in the United States. With just the 500L and 500X left in production. Fiat is hanging on to a small thread with what’s left of its so called Small SUV lineup.
In retrospect, maybe it’s time for the Spider to become an Alfa Romeo after all. Maybe it was meant to be a luxury roadster, appealing to buyers looking for an upgrade to the Miata. What if Alfa Romeo designed an all electric Spider with a 0-60 time that can compete with Tesla’s 1.9 second Roadster? A sleek, modern electric roadster designed by a famous Italian coach builder. It makes perfect sense since Alfa Romeo already plans to bring its first hybrid/electric vehicle to production with the Tonale next year. These are ways you can remain relevant, especially in a market where certain brands already hold a strong footprint. How do you grab some of that market share? Well, you learn from history and you innovovate. Automakers are adapting to changing times, pivoting to hybrid and electric powered motors. This is clearly the future as emission restrictions continue to be implemented across the globe. But how do you standout in a competitive and saturated market? You build upon your brand’s strengths. For example, take a look at the vehicle featured above. It’s a concept car, nothing officially released from Alfa Romeo. However the car embodies everything that Alfa Romeo represents. It pays homage to the GTV, one of the best homologated cars Alfa Romeo has ever built. This concept vehicle induces emotion by paying respect to Alfa Romeo’s racing days, while remaining contemporary for today’s roads.
Look at the all new Ford Bronco, a modern rendition of its 60’s predecessor. People are beyond excited for the Bronco’s release because everyone agrees that Ford got it right. It’s fully capable off road and its styling is reminiscent of a time when everyone wished they had a Bronco in their driveway. Automakers need to stop designing with cookie cutters and begin creating vehicles that evokes the passion in the driver. Hopefully Fiat or Alfa Romeo catches on and can restore the Spider for a third time. And just maybe this time it will be more charming.

With FCA stating that the future of small cars produced by them is in doubt, do you ever think we'd get a Fiesta-sized vehicle soon?
Autocar source, 4 November 2019
Currently FIAT only have the 500, 500L, 500X and Tipo models here in the United Kingdom, with nothing in between.
With recent news of the FCA/PSA merger, do you ever think they would have a Punto Elettra or Uno Elettra based on the same platform as the Peugeot 208/Opel Corsa, with the 134hp electric motor?
From an economic standpoint, it could make sense, and the economies of scale for platform-sharing.
Do you think it would make sense for FCA/PSA to do this?
I'm interested to hear what you think.

Fiat 500e microcar returning to USA in 2024
It’s (almost) back. Fiat will begin selling an all-new version of the iconic 500 in the U.S in 2024, the automaker has announced in conjunction with the Los Angeles Auto Show. The previous edition of the microcar was discontinued here after 2019 amid slow sales just as it was being redesigned for other countries. The Italian brand currently offers just one model in the U.S., the 500x subcompact…

The UK’s most and least reliable new and used cars have been revealed in the 2021 What Car?
Reliability Survey from Britain’s leading new car buying platform and consumer champion. Feedback from more than 16,000 car owners was analysed to find the country’s most dependable 178 models and 30 brands, from nearly new cars to those aged up to five years old. This year, a record six models achieved a score of 100%: the current versions of the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Convertible and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the previous-generation Dacia Sandero and Honda HR-V. At brand level, Lexus and Dacia models were hailed as the most dependable for new and used buyers, while Fiat and Land Rover achieved the lowest scores. Lexus gained an overall rating of 98.7% and none of its vehicles scored lower than 98.4%. Budget brand Dacia also impressed with a 97.3% overall rating, demonstrating that you don’t have to break the bank to buy a dependable model. In contrast, Fiat had the least reliable cars, gaining an 82.0% rating from owners, while Land Rover and Ford were second and third worst for reliability. Hybrids were rated as the most durable type of car, with an average class reliability score of 96.9%. The best performing hybrid was the Lexus NX (2014 – present), which managed a 99.8% score, while hybrid variants of the BMW X5 (2018 – present) were rated least reliable, with 89.7%. Luxury SUVs performed the worst in the study, achieving an average class rating of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan (2014 – present) bucked the trend, managing a creditable 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) received the lowest score in this class with a 72.1% result. Owners were asked whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they cost, with the overall score expressed as a percentage. Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% had experienced a fault with their car in the past year, with 85% of faults repaired free of charge. For 7% of drivers, the repairs cost between £101 and £500, while 2% had to pay more than £1500 to get their car back on the road. A third of cars remained driveable and were fixed within a day, while 25% could be driven but took more than a week to repair. What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The UK’s used car market is currently booming, making it all the more important that people know which models will be reliable. With feedback from more than 16,000 owners, the latest What Car? Reliability Survey highlights the brands and models with the best and worst records. “Our latest study also shows that a high price tag isn’t always a guarantee of reliability, because some of Britain’s cheapest cars are among the most reliable.” Top 10 most reliable brands (cars up to five years old) Brand Reliability Rating Lexus98.7%Dacia97.3%Suzuki97.1%Hyundai97.1%Toyota97.0%Mini97.0%Mitsubishi96.9%Mazda95.9%Kia95.8%MG95.7% Bottom 10 most reliable brands (cars up to five years old) Brand Reliability Rating Fiat82.0%Land Rover82.5%Ford86.2%Nissan86.2%Alfa Romeo86.5%Porsche89.4%Mercedes-Benz89.6%Vauxhall89.6%Peugeot89.6%Jaguar90.1% Reliability results by vehicle classes (cars up to five years old) Hybrid cars – 96.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableLexus NX (2014 – present) – 99.8%BMW X5 (2018 – present) – 89.7% Small SUVs – 95.2% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableHonda HR-V (2015 – 2020) – 100% Mazda CX-3 (2016 – 2019) – 100% Peugeot 2008 (2013 – 2019) – 81.8% MPVs – 93.7% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2014 – present) – 98.8% Volkswagen Touran (2015 – present) – 74.1% Family SUVs – 93.6% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableMitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2017 – present) – 100% Range Rover Evoque (2011 – 2019) – 77.1% Large SUVs – 93.6% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW X3 petrol (2018 – present) – 97.7% Nissan X-Trail (2014 – present) – 59.7% Family cars – 93.0% class reliability ratingMost ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 1 Series petrol (2011 – 2019) – 98.7% Mercedes-Benz A-Class (2018 – present) – 84.8% Electric cars – 92.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableNissan Leaf (2011 – 2018) – 98.6% Jaguar I-Pace (2018 – present) – 86.3% Coupes, convertibles and sports cars – 92.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableAudi TT (2014 – present) – 100% Mini Convertible (2016 – present) – 100% Porsche 718 Cayman (2015 – present) – 73.5% Executive cars – 92.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableSkoda Superb petrol (2015 – present) – 99.2% Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel (2014 – present) – 80.9% Small cars – 91.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableDacia Sandero (2013 – 2020) – 100% Ford Fiesta (2017 – present) – 74.9% Luxury cars – 90.4% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 5 Series petrol (2017 – present) – 96.9% Audi A6 (2011 – 2018) – 82.1% Luxury SUVs – 88.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliablePorsche Macan petrol (2014 – present) – 97.9% Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) – 72.1% Read the full article

Munich International Motor Show : Now in eco mode
The International Motor Show in Munich has begun this Tuesday. Instead of models in front of sports cars, the providers are now presenting recycled cars and bicycles. This should underpin the change in the industry - but by far not everyone likes it.
If one last proof was needed that the German auto industry really wants to do everything completely different now, then it is this, well, airy demonstration. In the coming week, the International Motor Show, better known as the IAA[1], begins in Munich. And the Association of German Automobile Manufacturers, the VDA, [2] has invited the reporters to a preview - but not by bus or in an electric car convoy, but by zeppelin.
At a height of 500 meters you will glide gently over Munich and see how what how this probably most important German trade fair has changed. The IAA no longer only takes place in exhibition halls, but also right in the middle of the old town: at Königsplatz, for example, at Odeonsplatz, at Stachus or Marienplatz and also on the A 94 autobahn where people can try out futuristic vehicles.
In the past, the bigger the better
The change of perspective is necessary. Everything used to be clear, the rule of thumb was: the bigger, the better. Business is still running according to these rules - extremely well in fact, following current sales and profit figures. But in times of lightning-fast computers, threatening climate change and overcrowded cities, the managers in Wolfsburg, Munich and Stuttgart are increasingly discussing other things, sometimes with an anxious tone: Which robot car will come from the USA tomorrow? Which new competitor is behind the corner in China? What new forms of transportation are in demand? How green do you have to get? And yes, that too: How desirable are you actually?
When the industry gathered for the last time at the IAA, in autumn 2019, already a lot of certainties for so long in the automotive world had been shaken. And the car people hardly had any answers. This is one of the reasons why the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt turned out to be quite a disaster - which is not an exaggeration - that should not be repeated.
When Chancellor Angela Merkel visited, climate activists grimly climbed some cars and held up posters: "Climate killers". The BMW employees stood around their occupied cars, perplexed. The dented roofs were the smallest problem. The managers simply didn't know how to deal with this situation, for which there is probably no good solution. Halligalli [3] was also outside the gates: demonstrators blocked the driveway with bicycles. Which, by the way, was quite right for the mayor of Frankfurt, Peter Feldmann. The SPD man - after all, actually the host - was not allowed to speak at the opening. His speech was then of course known anyway: "Frankfurt needs more buses and trains, but not more SUVs," it said. And he also thanked the demonstrators - their fight for a better climate is important.
From then on, the disturbed car people only wanted to get away from Frankfurt. Eventually they agreed on Munich. Here, too, urban society does not embrace the auto industry. But it is probably the safest big city in the world, a main argument when looking for a new venue. "Here there are cavalry squadrons and, in case of doubt, a stable police cauldron," said someone from the industry who was involved in the decision-making process some time ago. But that alone is not enough to make the trade fair a success again.
Because the car itself has lost traction. In Frankfurt there were only a good 500,000 visitors. Half as many as a few years earlier. Even in this area of life, providers and consumers have migrated to the Internet. And the avant-garde is somewhere else anyway: Google, Apple and Tesla are leaders in robot functions and electromobility - and what are the Chinese actually building with massive state support? Hardly any of this could be seen in Frankfurt.
The big trade fairs were long regarded as high masses: the car show in Geneva or Paris, the motor show in Detroit - or the IAA in Frankfurt, that was glamor in all its facets. Whoever could went there. The others at least devoured the reports and photos about horsepower cars and the scarcely clothed young women that manufacturers like Ferrari put on hoods, which they thought was creative.
It was the time when car managers secretly hung around the competition's exhibition halls, sometimes more, sometimes less, to see what their colleagues were up to. When they met in the back rooms of the pavilions to make deals and start mergers. When men like the former Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche and the long-time Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn sat on the big stage, talking about cars, marriages and all sorts of other things and the audience wondered whether what took place was more of a cabaret . Ghosn later got into trouble with the Japanese judiciary and at some point fled to Lebanon in an instrument case. Behind the big cars was often also a perfectly staged drama.
The VW family owners made the managers act like gladiators in the Coliseum
In all these years, however, nobody had encouraged the knighting of the car more than Volkswagen. On the eve of the official car show openings, the Wolfsburg always invited people to a large hall, in Frankfurt, in Paris, in Geneva, regardless of the main thing: big. When every brand boss then presented his latest models in front of the big players, the music came off the tape at discotheque volume, when the bosses of Porsche, Audi and Skoda bowed to the powerful, the family owners Wolfgang Porsche and above all Ferdinand Piëch, then this copied Roman Coliseum-style events: Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant.
It was loud on those evenings in the VW Coliseum, very loud. Sometimes the Pet Shop Boys performed, sometimes the French film diva Catherine Deneuve, sometimes rope artists and dancers. Each act was kind of out of place in its own way. But these evenings weren't about the total work of art being convincing. The names were important. The celebrities. And the volume. When the twelve cylinders of the Lamborghini Aventador also cracked to the pounding techno music, to light shows and artificial fog, then you wondered how - for example - Mr Piëch, who was already older at the time, could stand it. Mostly he sat there, stoic, immobile, absent.
As soon as the show was over and the gladiators bowed to him, the emperor stood up and left the stands. Walked slowly down the stairs into the arena. Pretended to be inspecting cars, but the truth was he wanted to speak to the people, and so he did. Often only a few minutes, but that provided a topic of conversation for days. For example, when he said between half sentences that he would like to buy the Fiat subsidiary Alfa Romeo. Just like that, maybe also to drive the then Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne to white heat. Incidentally, the latter took revenge a few years later. When the Germans sank into the diesel scandal and Fiat was accused of having also manipulated diesel engines, the Italian said: "Anyone who compares us with the German company has smoked something illegal."
The "i Vision Circular" should consist of almost 100 percent recycled material
Perhaps the diesel scandal was the beginning of the end of the big trade fairs, in any case it accelerated change. As a result of the crisis, the evitably oversized cars were trimmed down to normal. At the same time, new competitors with new technologies pushed into the industry. Then Piëch and his top managers disappeared from the scene. And the new managers also break the existing professional rules. At the IAA 2019 VW boss Herbert Diess tried out the embrace technique with the demonstrators, he went almost completely out to the people, discussed with an activist of the "Sand im Getriebe"[4] initiative. That was a bit obnoxious on his part, but at least he had tried it.
Nowadays even in Munich, they want to appear more modern here and everything should run more smoothly, the industry hopes. And other content has been agreed. In particular, visitors can see electric cars, such as a stretchable sedan from Audi. And BMW wants to talk about the circular economy in its "Joytopia": How can mobility function in a resource-saving and low-CO₂ manner? The company wants to present the "i Vision Circular", a vision vehicle that consists of almost 100 percent recycled material - and is designed in such a way that it can be easily recycled. VW, in turn, would like to introduce the "New Auto", the robot driven car of the day after tomorrow. "Mobility is a basic human need - and fulfilling it in all its facets is an ever greater challenge for our society, which business and politics have to face," says VDA President Hildegard Müller and is certain that the "new IAA " will show ways how these mobility tasks can be combined:" efficiently, economically, socially and ecologically ".
It should be possible to experience it in the literal sense of the word, which is why the IAA no longer takes place in noisy, stuffy exhibition halls for the most part. But outside in the squares. Because that's where the industry wants to get into conversation with critics, at least in theory - as long as they don't trample on the roofs of cars.
A pleasant approach. The corona epidemic could destroy some of it. The incidence is rising again, now fences have to be put up around the scenes in the city. So this time there is an inside and outside, which will lead to conflicts, especially since a number of initiative-takers have announced protests and rather do not want to debate in the chair, from the anonymous alliance "Smash-IAA"[5], whose posters are hanging all over the city, to the Greens Youth[6]. Many criticize the car industry for promoting its event as a green mobility fair.
The critics are not entirely wrong. Because there are also those in industry who are unfamiliar with the new IAA concept, which wants to unite everything that rolls. We are car manufacturers and should just display our cars nicely instead of having to take buses, trains and car sharing as well, they say behind closed doors. These orthodox do not think much of the fact that bicycles are now also exhibited at the "new IAA", although some car manufacturers now offer them themselves. They can't do much with expert panels on "Smart Cities", instead they complain that the IAA is not international enough, which is probably due to the Corona epidemic. In fact, even VW is not represented with all brands, Peugeot, Opel, Fiat, Volvo, Honda and Toyota completely save themselves the appearance, even expensive super sports cars will not be on display, not even the US company Tesla, which will soon have a plant in Germany opened. The German competition is afraid of the Americans, but they also know that Tesla would attract people, potential customers for everyone.
Or should bigger things be negotiated after all, the transport turnaround, climate protection? It depends on who you ask. The car people are not in agreement. The IAA 2021 is a very exciting large-scale experiment in an industry that is currently having to find itself anew. And which sometimes relies on the tried and tested. On Sunday - after the Zeppelin flight - there is a VW break in the Isarpost[7]. A large hall, there is probably loud music, and of course wine and beer, Corona or not. As always. Because as exciting as everything is right now - it would be more convenient if everything stayed the same.

VARIATIONS OF THE CAR ENGINE
There are many variations of the car engine and they all come in various shapes and forms and they all have unique differences. You can differentiate cars based on layout and engine cylinder configurations. Based on layout, we have;
STRAIGHT ENGINE
The straight or inline engine is an internal combustion engine with all cylinders aligned in one row. They are usually found in four- and six-cylinder configurations and are considerably easier to build. Straight configurations are simpler than their V-shaped counterparts. They are used in some models from BMW, Ford, Jeep, Chevrolet, GMC, Toyota, Suzuki and Volvo Cars.
INLINE ENGINES
Cylinders are arranged in a straight row, like a straight engine layout. However, it doesn't go from front to back like a straight engine but the cylinders as being placed 'side by side'. In-line engines are also smaller, thus, It frees up more space around the engine for components like the car battery and cooling system. Cars, light commercial vehicles, medium & heavy commercial vehicles and earth moving equipment widely use this design.
FLAT ENGINES
It is also referred to as boxers engine. This layout keeps the engine as flat as possible. Thee cylinders are located on either side of a central crankshaft, laid down flat in both directions. This layout keeps the car's centre of gravity low, which then makes it much easier to handle. Cars with this type of engine are 2016 Subaru Outback, Subaru Legacy, 2016 Subaru WRX.
V ENGINES
Sometimes called a vee engine. It's cylinders arranged at an angle in a V-shape. Having more power in a smaller area makes the V engine layout ideal for luxury high-performance vehicles. The V type has two rows of cylinders, usually forming an angle of 60° or 90° between the two banks. The more compact V-engine is fitted in some cars, especially vehicles with eight or 12 cylinders, and also some with six cylinders. Cars with this type of engine is, Toyota Camry 3.0L, Mercedes Benz E 400 Cabriolet. Based on engine configuration, they are;
TWIN CYLINDERS
They are also known as an inline-twin, vertical-twin, or parallel-twin. In this configuration, two cylinders are arranged in a line along a common crankshaft. 2005 Mazda RX-8 Special Edition, 2012 Fiat 500 Twin Air, Tata Nano, 1974 Mazda RX-3 Super Deluxe.
THREE CYLINDER ENGINE
A straight-three engine (also called an inline- triple or inline-three) is a three-cylinder piston engine where cylinders are arranged in a line along a common crankshaft. A 3 cylinder engine is much more fuel efficient compared to a 4 cylinder engine of the same size. The straight-three is light on fuel and big on power Cars with the 3 cylinder engine are; Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, BMW i8, Mitsubishi Mirage, Smart Fortwo, Daihatsu Charade.
FOUR CYLINDER ENGINES
A straight-four engine is a four-cylinder piston engine where cylinders are arranged in a line along a common crankshaft. One advantage of a four-cylinder engine is that it offers a balance between fuel efficiency and power. They work continuously and are extremely refined.. Cars with a 4-Cylinder Engine are, 2014 Toyota Prius, 2016 Honda Accord, 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and lots more.
FIVE CYLINDER ENGINE
The straight-five engine or inline-five engine is an internal combustion engine with five cylinders aligned in one row or plane, sharing a single engine block and crankcase. A Five-Cylinder Engine as an Economical, Smooth-Running Power Plant. Five-cylinder engines are hard to find in new models these days, except perhaps in a few Audi RS models. Cars that use five cylinder engines are Land Rover Defender, Ford Focus RS, Audi Sport Quattro, Volvo 850R.
SIX CYLINDER ENGINES
The straight-six engine (also referred to as an inline-six engine; abbreviated I6 or L6) It is an internal combustion engine, with six cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft (straight engine). Cars with six cylinder engines are 2019 Chrysler 300, 2020 Toyota Avalon, 2019 Genesis G80.
EIGHT CYLINDER ENGINE
An eight-cylinder engine, the V8, is common in pickup trucks, SUVs and sportscars. These engines create a lot of horsepower and torque and are better suited to tow or haul. It usually has between four and six litres of displacement, depending on the size of the eight cylinders within. Foremost, the V-8 operates like any other gasoline-powered four-stroke engine. The higher we go on the number of cylinders, the more high-performance/luxury the cars tend to be. When you cross into 8+ cylinder territory, you'll only find these in racecars, supercars and only the most luxurious of sedans. There are so many variations of car engines, but you have gained a little more knowledge about car engines than before. Reference; HoltsAuto Read the full article

Will Kandi Crush Our Expectations With Its $17,499 EV?
Tiger King introduced us to characters such as Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, as well as the weird world of big cat collectors and rescuers. It also reminded us about the existence of the $10,599 Kandi Coco, which briefly appears in scenes of the series filmed at Exotic’s Oklahoma zoo. Nearly a decade ago, the Chinese brand’s small, Smart-like electric vehicle was available to Oklahomans for as little as $865 thanks to then-available federal and state tax credits.
Now, Kandi is back with two new EVs it plans to sell in the United States: the Model K27 and Model K23. Curiously, the numerically higher Model K27 is the cheaper, lower-performance version of the two. That said, it’s also the better looking of this pair. Mind you, looks are subjective and the K27 is anything but pretty.
2021 Kandi Model K27 Highlights
Still, we have an affinity for this $17,499 (before tax incentives) model’s Kei-car-like styling, which includes features such as expressive ovoid headlamps, stubby and tall proportions, and a set of small, 14-inch wheels and tires. At 136.2 inches long and 63.6 inches high, the four-door Model K27 casts a shadow 8.2 inches shorter and 3.8 inches taller than the 2019 Fiat 500 hatchback. The Model K27’s price merely applies to the first 1,000 customers to purchase the small EV. Expect the model’s base price to rise to $19,999 once those initial cars are sold.
As its size suggests, the Model K27 is a city car. That’s for the best, too, as the less than 30 hp produced by the car’s front-mounted electric motor leaves this 2,271-pound EV with a top speed of 63 mph. Driving range, meanwhile, stands at a manufacturer-estimated 100 miles with the car’s 17.7-kWh battery pack fully charged. Replenishing the little Kandi’s battery requires 7.0 hours when hooked up to a 240-volt charger, per the automaker. Despite its relatively cheap starting sum, the Model K27 sports standard kit such as a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-front airbags, and anti-lock brakes.
2021 Kandi Model K23 Highlights
If the Model K27 fails to suit your EV needs, then maybe the 20.2-inch longer Model K23 is the Kandi EV for you. At $27,499 (before tax incentives), however, the bigger Model K23 makes less of a case for itself as a value proposition—especially given the fact that price applies to the first 1,000 Model K23 customers.Expect the model’s base price to rise to $29,999 once those initial cars are sold. Consider the 2020 Nissan Leaf, which starts at $32,525, offers more palatable styling, and packs more than four times the horsepower from its electric motor.
That said, the 2,954-pound Model K23’s less than 30-hp electric motor and 41.4-kWh battery pack manage a manufacturer-estimated 188 miles of driving range on a full charge—39 more miles than the Leaf’s EPA-estimated range. With a top speed of 70 mph, though, the front-wheel-drive Model K23 will surely spend more time scurrying about in the right lane. Recharging the pack is a 7.5-hour affair on a 240-volt charger, according to Kandi.
Inside, the Model K23 features a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. We also anticipate the car’s larger size nets it additional cargo and passenger space relative to the smaller Model K27.
Still, we struggle to find any justification for buyers to pull the trigger on the Model K23 when the boring, but well-equipped 2020 Nissan Leaf costs a mere $2,526 more. Regardless, if you find either Kandi model sweet, then you can put down a refundable $100 deposit to secure one of these EVs for yourself.
Update: This post was originally published on August 3, 2020, and has been updated to reflect the cars’ lower starting prices.

Arplis - News: 2020 Top 10 High Tech Cars
Photo: Polestar The Polestar 1 hybrid, the first of a sub-brand from Volvo, goes fast and goes far in all-electric mode—roughly 88 kilometers (55 miles). Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR In 2019, the auto industry finally started acting like its future was electric. How do we know? Just follow the money. General Motors just announced it was spending US $20 billion over five years to bring out a new generation of electric vehicles. Volkswagen Group has pledged $66 billion spread over five years, most of it for electric propulsion. Ford hopes to transform its lineup and image with an $11.5 billion program to develop EVs. And of course, Tesla has upstaged them all with the radical, scrapyard-from-Mars Cybertruck, a reminder that Elon Musk will remain a threat to the automotive order for the foreseeable future. This past year, I saw the first fruit of Volkswagen Group’s massive investment: the Porsche Taycan, a German sport sedan that sets new benchmarks in performance and fast charging. It lived up to all the hype, I’m happy to say. As for Tesla and Ford, stay tuned. The controversial Tesla Cybertruck, the hotly anticipated Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the intriguing Rivian pickup and SUV (which has been boosted by $500 million in backing from Ford) are still awaiting introduction. EV fans, as ever, must be patient: The Mach-E won’t reach showrooms until late this year, and as for the Rivian and Cybertruck, who knows? As is our habit, we focus here on cars that are already in showrooms or will be within the next few months. And we do include some good old gasoline-powered cars. Our favorite is the Corvette: It adopts a mid-engine design for the first time in its 67-year history. Yes, an electrified version is in the works. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 The middle: where no Corvette engine has gone before Base price: US $59,995 Photo: Chevrolet Perfect balance is what you get by moving the Stingray’s V8 to the center; unlike its mid-engine rivals, the car has generous cargo space in a rear trunk. Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR By now, even casual car fans have heard that the Corvette has gone mid-engine. It’s a radical realignment for a car famous for big V8s nestling below long, flowing hoods since the ’Vette’s birth in 1953. Best of all, it works, and it means the Stingray will breathe down the necks of Ferraris, McLarens, and other mid-engine exotics—but at a ridiculous base price of just US $59,995. Tadge Juechter, the Corvette’s chief engineer, says that the previous, seventh-generation model had reached the limits of front-engine physics. By rebalancing weight rearward, the new design allows the Stingray to put almost preposterous power to the pavement without sacrificing the comfort and everyday drivability that buyers demand. I got my first taste of these new physics near the old stagecoach town of Tortilla Flat, Ariz. Despite having barely more grunt than last year’s base model—369 kilowatts (495 horsepower) from the 6.2-liter V8 rumbling just behind my right shoulder—the Corvette scorches to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) nearly a full second quicker, at a supercar-baiting 2.9 seconds. This Stingray should top out at around 190 mph. And there are rumors of mightier versions in the works, perhaps even an electric or hybrid ’Vette with at least 522 kW (700 hp). With the engine out back, driver and passenger sit virtually atop the front axle, 42 centimeters (16.5 inches) closer to the action, wrapped in a fighter-jet-inspired cockpit with a clearer view over a dramatically lowered hood. Thanks to a new eight-speed, dual-clutch automated gearbox, magnetorheological shocks, and a limited-slip rear differential—all endlessly adjustable—my Corvette tamed every outlaw curve, bump, and dip in its Old West path. It’s so stable and composed that you’ll need a racetrack to approach its performance limits. It’s still fun on public roads, but you can tell that it’s barely breaking a sweat. Yet it’s nearly luxury-car smooth and quiet when you’re not romping on throttle. And it’s thrifty. Figure on 9 to 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers (26 to 28 miles per gallon) at a steady highway cruise, including sidelining half its cylinders to save fuel. A sleek convertible model does away with the coupe’s peekaboo view of the splendid V8 through a glass cover. The upside is an ingenious roof design that folds away without hogging a cubic inch of cargo space. Unlike any other mid-engine car in the world, the Corvette will also fit two sets of golf clubs (or equivalent luggage) in a rear trunk, in addition to the generously sized “frunk” up front. The downside to that convenience is a yacht-size rear deck that makes—how shall we put this?—the Chevy’s butt look fat. An onboard Performance Data Recorder works like a real-life video game, capturing point-of-view video and granular data on any drive, overlaying the video with telemetry readouts, and allowing drivers to analyze lap times and performance with Cosworth racing software. The camera-and-GPS system allows any road or trip to be stored and analyzed as though it was a timed circuit—perfect for those record-setting grocery runs. Polestar 1 This hybrid is tuned for performance Base price: US $156,500 Photo: Polestar Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR Consider the Polestar 1 a tech tease from Volvo. This fiendishly complex plug-in hybrid will be seen in just 1,500 copies, built over three years in a showpiece, enviro-friendly factory in Chengdu, China. Just as important, it’s the first of several planned Polestars, a Volvo sub-brand that aims to expand the company’s electric reach around the globe. I drove mine in New Jersey, scooting from Hoboken to upstate New York, as fellow drivers craned their necks to glimpse this tuxedo-sharp, hand-built luxury GT. The body panels are formed from carbon fiber, trimming 227 kilograms (500 pounds) from what’s still a 2,345-kg (5,170-pound) ride. Front wheels are driven by a four-cylinder gas engine, whose combo of a supercharger and turbocharger generates 243 kilowatts (326 horses) from just 2.0 liters of displacement, with another 53 kW (71 hp) from an integrated starter/generator. Two 85-kW electric motors power the rear wheels, allowing some 88 kilometers (55 miles) of emissions-free range—likely a new high for a plug-in hybrid—before the gas engine kicks in. Mashing the throttle summons some 462 kW (619 hp) and 1,000 newton meters (737 pound-feet) of torque, allowing a 4.2-second dash to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour). It’s fast, but not lung-crushing fast, like Porsche’s Taycan. Yet the Polestar’s handling is slick, thanks to those rear motors, which work independently, allowing torque vectoring—the speeding or slowing of individual wheels—to boost agility. And Öhlins shock absorbers, from the renowned racing and performance brand, combine precise body control with a creamy-smooth ride. It’s a fun drive, but Polestar’s first real test comes this summer with the Polestar 2 EV. That fastback sedan’s $63,750 base price and roughly 440-km (275-mile) range will see it square off against Tesla’s sedans. Look for it in next year’s Top 10. Hyundai Sonata It has the automation of a much pricier car Base price: US $24,330 Photo: Hyundai Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR The U.S. market for family sedans has been gutted by SUVs. But rather than give up on sedans, as Ford and Fiat Chrysler have done, Hyundai has doubled down with a 2020 Sonata that’s packed with luxury-level tech and alluring design at a mainstream price. The Sonata is packed with features that were recently found only on much costlier cars. The list includes Hyundai’s SmartSense package of forward-collision avoidance, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and a drowsy-driver attention warning, and they’re all standard, even in the base model. The SEL model adds a blind-spot monitor, but with a cool tech twist: Flick a turn signal and a circle-shaped camera view of the Sonata’s blind spot appears in the digital gauge cluster in front of the driver. It helped me spot bicyclists in city traffic. Hyundai’s latest infotainment system, with a 10-inch (26-centimeter) monitor, remains one of the industry’s most intuitive touch screens. Taking a page from much more expensive BMWs, the Hyundai’s new “smart park” feature, standard on the top-shelf Limited model, lets it pull into or out of a tight parking spot or garage with no driver aboard, controlled by the driver through the key fob. That fob can be replaced by a digital key, which uses an Android smartphone app, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Near Field Communication to unlock and start the car. Owners can share digital-key access with up to three users, including sending codes via the Web. Even the Sonata’s hood is festooned with fancy electronics. What first looks like typical chrome trim turns out to illuminate with increasing intensity as the strips span the fenders and merge into the headlamps. The chrome was laser-etched to allow a grid of 0.05-millimeter LED squares to shine through. Add it to the list of bright ideas from Hyundai. Porsche Taycan It outperforms Tesla—for a price Base price: US $114,340 Photo: Porsche Fast off the mark and fast to charge, the Taycan inherits tech from Porsche’s LeMans-winning 919 Hybrid racers, including the 800-volt architecture. Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR Yes, the all-electric Porsche Taycan is better than a Tesla Model S. And it had damn well better be: The Porsche is a far newer design, and it sells at up to double the Tesla’s price. What you get for all that is a four-door supercar GT, a technological marvel that starts the clock ticking on the obsolescence of fossil-fueled automobiles. This past September I spent two days driving the Taycan Turbo S through Denmark and Germany. One high point was repeated runs to 268 kilometers per hour (167 miles per hour) on the Autobahn, faster than I’ve ever driven an EV. From a standing start, an automated launch mode summoned 560 kilowatts (750 horsepower) for a time-warping 2.6-second dash to 60 mph. As alert readers have by now surmised, the Taycan is fast. But one of its best time trials takes place with the car parked. Thanks to the car’s groundbreaking 800-volt electrical architecture—with twice the voltage of the Tesla’s—charging is dramatically quicker. Doubling the voltage means the current needed to deliver a given level of power is of course halved. Pulling off the Autobahn during my driving test and connecting the liquid-cooled cables of a 350-kW Ionity charger, I watched the Porsche suck in enough DC to replenish its 93.4-kW battery from 8 to 80 percent in 20 minutes flat. Based on my math, the Porsche added nearly 50 miles of range for every 5 minutes of max charging. In the time it takes to hit the bathroom and pour a coffee, owners can add about 160 kilometers (100 miles) of range toward the Taycan’s total, estimated at 411 to 450 km (256 to 280 miles) under the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. But the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seems to have sandbagged the Porsche, pegging its range at 201 miles, even as test drivers report getting 270 miles or more. Porsche hopes to have 600 of the ultrafast DC chargers up and running in the United States by the end of this year. That 800-volt operation brings other advantages, too. With less current to carry, the wiring is slimmer and lighter, saving 30 kilograms in the electrical harness alone. Also, less current is drawn during hard driving, which reduces heat and wear on the electric motors. Porsche says that’s key to the Taycan’s repeatable, consistent performance. In its normal driving mode, the Turbo S version kicks out 460 kW (617 horsepower) and 1,049 newton meters (774 pound-feet) of torque. The front and back axles each have an electric motor with a robust 600-amp inverter; in other models the front gets 300 amps and the rear gets 600 amps. The Porsche’s other big edge is its race-bred handling. Though this sedan tops 2,310 kg (5,100 pounds), its serenity at boggling speeds is unmatched. Credit the full arsenal of Porsche’s chassis technology: four-wheel-steering, active roll stabilization, and an advanced air suspension offering three levels of stiffness, based on three separate pressurized chambers. Porsche claims class-leading levels of brake-energy recuperation. It’s also Porsche’s most aerodynamic production model, with a drag coefficient of just 0.22, about as good as any mass-production car ever. Porsche invested US $1 billion to develop the Taycan, with $800 million of that going to a new factory in Zuffenhausen, Germany. For a fairer fight with Tesla, a more-affordable 4S model arrives in U.S. showrooms this summer, with up to 420 kW (563 hp) and a base price of $103,800. Audi RS Q8 Mild hybrid, wild ride Base price (est.): US $120,000 Photo: Audi Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR I’m rocketing up a dormant volcano to the highest peak in Spain, Mt. Teide in the Canary Islands. There may be more efficient ways to test a luxury crossover SUV, but none more fun. I’m in the Audi RS Q8, a mild-hybrid version of the Q8, introduced just last year. I’m getting a lesson in how tech magic can make a roughly 2,310-kilogram (5,100-pound) vehicle accelerate, turn, and brake like a far smaller machine. The RS Q8’s pulsing heart is a 4-liter, 441-kilowatt (591-horsepower) twin-turbo V8. It’s augmented by a mild-hybrid system based on a 48-volt electrical architecture that sends up to 12 kW to charge a lithium-ion battery. That system also powers trick electromechanical antiroll bars to keep the body flatter than a Marine’s haircut during hard cornering. An adaptive air suspension hunkers down at speed to reduce drag and center of gravity, while Quattro all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering provide stability. A mammoth braking system, largely shared with the Lamborghini Urus, the Audi’s corporate cousin, includes insane 10-piston calipers up front. That means 10 pressure points for the brake pads against the spinning brake discs, for brawny stopping power and improved heat management and pedal feel. Optional carbon-ceramic brakes trim 19 pounds from each corner. Audi’s engineers fine-tuned it all in scores of trials on Germany’s fabled Nürburgring circuit, which the RS Q8 stormed in 7 minutes, 42 seconds. That’s faster than any other SUV in history. Audi’s digital Virtual Cockpit and MMI Touch center screens are smoothly integrated in a flat panel. A navigation system analyzes past drives to nearby destinations, looking at logged data on traffic density and the time of day. And the Audi Connect, an optional Android app that can be used by up to five people, can unlock and start the Audi. Audi quotes a conservative 3.8-second catapult from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour). We’re betting on 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, maybe less. Mini Cooper SE It offers all-electric sprightliness US $30,750 Photo: Mini Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR I’m on a street circuit at the FIA’s Formula E race in Brooklyn, N.Y., about to take my first all-electric laps in the new Mini Cooper SE during a break in race action. The Manhattan skyline paints a stunning backdrop across the harbor. My Red Hook apartment happens to be a short walk from this temporary circuit; so is the neighborhood Tesla showroom, and an Ikea and a Whole Foods, both equipped with EV chargers. In other words, this densely populated city is perfect for the compact, maneuverable, electric Mini, that most stylish of urban conveyances. It’s efficient, too, as Britain’s Mini first proved 61 years ago, with the front-drive car that Sir Alec Issigonis created in response to the gasoline rationing in Britain following the 1956 Suez crisis. This Mini squeezes 32.6 kilowatt-hours worth of batteries into a T-shaped pack below its floor without impinging on cargo space. At a hair over 1,360 kilograms (3,000 pounds), this Mini adds only about 110 kg to a base gasoline Cooper. With a 135-kilowatt (181-horsepower) electric motor under its handsome hood, the Mini sails past the Formula E grandstand, quickening my pulse with its go-kart agility and its ethereal, near-silent whir. The body sits nearly 2 centimeters higher than the gasoline version, to accommodate 12 lithium-ion battery modules, but the center of gravity drops by 3 cm (1.2 inches), a net boost to stability and handling. Because the Mini has neither an air-inhaling radiator grille nor an exhaust-exhaling pipe, it’s tuned for better aerodynamics as well. A single-speed transmission means I never have to shift, though I do fiddle with the toggle switch that dials up two levels of regenerative braking. That BMW electric power train, with 270 newton meters (199 pound-feet) of instant-on torque, punts me from 0 to 60 miles per hour (0 to 97 kilometers per hour) in just over 7 seconds, plenty frisky for such a small car. The company claims a new wheelspin actuator reacts to traction losses notably faster, a sprightliness that’s particularly gratifying when gunning the SE around a corner. It all reminds me of that time when the Tesla Roadster was turning heads and EVs were supposed to be as compact and light as possible to save energy. The downside is that a speck-size car can fit only so much battery. The Mini’s has less than one-third the capacity of the top Tesla Model S. That’s only enough for a mini-size range of 177 km (110 miles). That relatively tiny battery helps deliver an appealing base price of $23,250, including a $7,500 federal tax credit. And this is still a hyperefficient car: On a subsequent drive in crawling Miami traffic, the Mini is on pace for 201 km (125 miles) of range, though its battery contains the equivalent of less than 0.9 gallon of gasoline. Following a full 4-hour charge on a basic Level 2 charger, you’ll be zipping around town again, your conscience as clear as the air around the Mini. Vintage Fiat 124 Spider, Retooled by Electric GT A drop-in electric-drive system gives new life to an old car—like this 1982 Spider System base price: US $32,500 Photo: Electric GT This modern classic from 1982, retooled by Electric GT, hums along on an electric system that fits the space the engine used to occupy. Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR Vintage-car aficionados love to grouse about the time and money it takes to keep their babies running. Electric GT has a better idea: Skip ahead a century. The California company has developed an ingenious plug-and-play “crate motor” that transplants an electric heart into most any vintage gasoline car. I drove an orange 1982 Fiat 124 Spider that Electric GT converted to battery drive. With a relatively potent 89 kilowatts (120 horsepower) and 235 newton meters (173 pound-feet) of torque below its hood, and 25 kilowatt-hours’ worth of repurposed Tesla batteries stuffed into its trunk area, the Fiat can cover up to 135 kilometers (85 miles) of driving range, enough for a couple hours of top-down cruising. Best of all, the system is designed to integrate exclusively with manual-transmission cars, including the Fiat’s charming wood-topped shifter and five forward gears. This romantic, Pininfarina-designed Fiat also squirts to 60 miles per hour in about 7 seconds, about 3 seconds quicker than the original old-school dawdler. Electric GT first got attention when it converted a 1978 Ferrari 308, best known as Tom Selleck’s chariot on the U.S. TV show “Magnum, P.I.,” to electric drive. The company’s shop, north of Los Angeles, is filled with old Porsches, Toyota FJ40s, and other cars awaiting electrification. The crate motors even look like a gasoline engine, with what appears at first glance to be V-shaped cylinder banks and orange sparkplug wires. Systems are engineered for specific cars, and the burliest of the bunch store 100 kWh, enough to give plenty of range. With system prices starting at US $32,500 and topping $80,000 for longer-range units, this isn’t a project for the backyard mechanic on a Pep Boys budget. Eric Hutchison, Electric GT’s cofounder, says it’s for the owner who loves a special car and wants to keep it alive but doesn’t want to provide the regular babying care that aging, finicky machines typically demand. “It’s the guy who says, ‘I already own three Teslas. Now, how do I get my classic Jaguar electrified?’ ” says Hutchison. Components designed for easy assembly should enable a good car hobbyist to perform the conversion in just 40 to 50 hours, the company says. “We’re taking out all the brain work of having to be an expert in battery safety or electrical management,” Hutchison says. “You can treat it like a normal engine swap.” Toyota RAV4 Hybrid A redesigned hybrid system optimizes fuel economy Base price: $29,470 Photo: Toyota Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR The RAV4 is the best-selling vehicle in the United States that isn’t a pickup truck. What’s more, its hybrid offshoot is the most popular gas-electric SUV. No wonder: Forty-four percent of all hybrids sold in America in 2018 were Toyotas. And where many hybrids disappoint in real-world fuel economy, the RAV4 delivers. That’s why this Toyota, whose 2019 redesign came too late to make last year’s Top 10 list, is getting its due for 2020. My own tests show 41 miles per gallon (5.7 liters per 100 kilometers) in combined city and highway driving, 1 mpg better than the EPA rating. Up front, a four-cylinder, 131-kilowatt (176-horsepower) engine mates with an 88-kW (118-hp) electric motor. A 40-kW electric motor under the cargo hold drives the rear wheels. Altogether, you get a maximum 163 kW (219 hp) in all-wheel-drive operation, with no driveshaft linking the front and rear wheels. The slimmer, redesigned hybrid system adds only about 90 kilograms (about 200 pounds) and delivers a huge 8-mile-per-gallon gain over the previous model. Toyota’s new Predictive Efficient Drive collects data on its driver’s habits and combines that with GPS route and traffic info to optimize both battery use and charging. For example, it will use more electricity while climbing hills in expectation of recapturing that juice on the downhill side. And when the RAV4 is riding on that battery, it’s as blissfully quiet as a pure EV. Toyota’s Safety Sense gear is standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Next year will bring the first-ever plug-in hybrid version, which Toyota says will be the most powerful RAV4 yet. Ford Escape Hybrid This SUV has carlike efficiency Base price: US $29,450 Photo: Ford Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR Years ago, Americans began abandoning their cars for SUVs. So by now you might think those SUVs would be achieving carlike efficiencies. You’d be correct. Exhibit A: the new Ford Escape Hybrid, with its class-topping EPA rating of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers (41 miles per gallon)in combined city and highway driving. That’s 1 mpg better than its formidable Top 10 competitor, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Where the Toyota aims for a rugged-SUV look, the Ford wraps a softer, streamlined body around its own hybrid system. That includes a 2.5-L, four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine, and a pair of electric motor/generators for a 150-kilowatt (200 horsepower) total. A briefcase-size battery pack, about a third the size of the old Escape Hybrid’s, tucks below the front passenger seat. The Toyota’s rear electric motor drives the rear wheels independently and thus offers only an all-wheel-drive version. The Escape forges a mechanical connection to the rear wheels, allowing both all-wheel drive and front-wheel-drive versions. The latter is lighter and more efficient when you’re not dealing with snow, ice, off-roading, or some combination of the three. The 0-to-60-mph run is dispatched in a whisper-quiet 8.7 seconds, versus 7.5 seconds for the Toyota. The Ford fires back with powerful, smartly tuned hybrid brakes that have more stopping power than either the Toyota or the gasoline-only Escapes can manage. Tech features include a nifty automated self-parking function, evasive-steering assist, and wireless smartphone charging. A head-up display available on the Titanium—Ford’s first ever in North America—projects speed, navigation info, driver-assist status, and other data onto the windshield. FordPass Connect, a smartphone app, lets owners use a smartphone to lock, unlock, start, or locate their vehicle, and a standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi system links up to 10 mobile devices. A plug-in hybrid version will follow later this year with what Ford says will be a minimum 30 miles of usable all-electric range. All told, it’s a winning one-two punch of efficiency and technology in an SUV that starts below $30,000. Aston Martin Vantage AMR High tech empowers retro tech Base price: US $183,081 Photo: Aston Martin Best of Old and New: The AMR blends an actual manual transmission integrated into an adaptive power train and suspension Introduction Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 Polestar 1 Hyundai Sonata Porsche Taycan Audi RS Q8 Mini Cooper SE Fiat 124 Spider Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Ford Escape Hybrid Aston Martin Vantage AMR Take an Aston Martin Vantage, among the world’s most purely beautiful sports cars. Add a 375-kilowatt (503-horsepower) hand-assembled V8 from AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz. Assemble a team of engineers led by Matt Becker, Aston’s handling chief and the former maestro of Lotus’s chassis development. Does this sound like the recipe for the sports car of your dreams? Well, that dream goes over the top, with the manual transmission in the new Vantage AMR. Burbling away from Aston’s AMR Performance Centre, tucked along the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany, I am soon happily pressing a clutch pedal and finessing the stick shift on the Autobahn. The next thing I know, the Aston is breezing past 300 kilometers per hour (or 186 miles per hour), which is not far off its official 195-mph top speed. That’s a 7-mph improvement over the automatic version. This stick shouts defiance in a world in which the Corvette C8, the Ferrari, the Lamborghini, and the Porsche 911 have sent their manual transmissions to the great scrapyard in the sky. But what’s impressive is how seamlessly the company has integrated this classic technology with the newest tech, including an adaptive power train and suspension. The AMR’s 1,500-kilogram (3,298-pound) curb weight is about 100 kg less than that of an automatic model. The seven-speed manual, a once-maddening unit from Italy’s Graziano, has been transformed. An all-new gearbox was out of the question: No supplier wanted to develop one for a sports car that will have just 200 copies produced this year. So Aston had to get creative with the existing setup. Technicians reworked shift cables and precisely chamfered the gears’ “fingers”—think of the rounded teeth inside a Swiss watch—for smoother, more-precise shifts. A dual-mass flywheel was fitted to the mighty Mercedes V8 to dampen resonance in the driveline so the gearbox doesn’t rattle. The standard Vantage’s peak torque has been lowered from 681 to 625 newton meters (from 502 to 461 pound-feet) to reduce stress on transmission gears. Aston also sweated the ideal placement of shifter and clutch pedal for the pilot. A dual-chamber clutch master cylinder, developed from a Formula One design, moves a high volume of transmission fluid quickly, but without an unreasonably heavy, thigh-killing clutch pedal. A selectable AM Shift Mode feature delivers modern, rev-matching downshifts, eliminating the need for human heel-and-toe maneuvers, with thrilling matched upshifts under full throttle. The Graziano still takes a bit of practice: Its funky “dogleg” first gear sits off to the left, away from the familiar H pattern of shift gates. Second gear is where you’d normally find first, third replaces second, and so on. The layout originated in old-school racing, the idea being that first gear was unneeded, unless you were rolling through the pit lane. The dogleg pattern allows easier shifting from second to third and back without having to slide the shifter sideways. Once acclimated, I can’t get enough: The shifter grants me precise control over the brawny V8, and the Aston’s every balletic move. More improbably, this sweet shifter on the AMR won’t become a footnote in Aston history: It will be an option on every Vantage in 2021. PHOT303 - Mileage May Vary - 14/3/2020
This day was meant to be a trip to the Exeter Phoenix with Louise, looking at some art work and some moving image, yet a spectre loomed over the day, and the future. I decided to bring along the Mamiya 7ii on my travels, and load it up with a fresh pro pack of Kodak Portra 160 (before the price went up!).
Just as I arrived at Exeter St Davids, I had a call from Louise explaining that she had to go home and self isolate. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) was beginning to become a concern to the nation. This had been bubbling for a while, and the news started to report cases of it in China in late 2019 and early 2020. It had made it’s way to the U.K, and confirmed cases were being reported. Currently (that being 27/3/2020) it has worsened and the whole country is in lockdown, which is in turn being enforced by the police services. Yet this whole situation deserves it own post explaining the changes due to this. Back to our normal broadcast.
Since the trip had been cancelled as soon as I arrived, I took t upon myself to meet up with my old friend, Thom, as he is an Exeter resident. He had never seen a 7ii in the wild, so he was in awe about the camera. I had a few hours to spare, and I thought that the singular roll of Portra would have lasted me all of that time. And yet, I shot it all within about 30 minutes of starting it.
Another Vauxhall Combo, parked on somebody’s driveway on Eldertree Gardens, which is next to St. Davids Hill. The hill coming up from St Davids station is long and steep, but it saves waiting around the station for 40 minutes for a 120 second train ride into Exeter Central. The hill is tiring, but it only takes a few minutes to walk and it is good exercise. I almost walked past this Combo, but I have always enjoyed the design of these houses, and they are oddly nostalgic looking to me. If that Vauxhall Combo was swapped with something a bit older, I would think that it would be hard to decipher when this photograph was taken. I decided to stop down the lens to around F8 this time around, to get more in focus and to increase the sharpness of the 80mm F4. And I do have to say, it just gets sharper the more it is stopped down. Even when these are scanned with my Canoscan 9000F Mkii (previously written about and despised), they’re amazingly crisp. I have also found a size of negative that the scanner seems to work well with. 35mm scans always looked really bad, but it seems that the bigger the negative, the better quality the scan. Everything I have shot with the 7ii has been scanned using the Canon at 2400dpi. This might be a high dpi to be using, but it also collects a lot of the detail that I would like to retain.
I met Thom in town, grabbed a strong black coffee and we walked around the roads around the quay. And to the surprise to me, there was a lot of scenes that worked so well for MMV, hence why the roll didn’t last all too long. Here, is a Fiat Panda and the legendary Fiat Coupe. Just like the Alfa Romeo GTV, Fiat’s do have some questionable quality control and electrical choices, yet they’re fantastic cars. The Coupe was a model Fiat made during the 1990′s, which is a rare sight in this day and age. They are somewhat of a modern classic with what seems to be a cult following, with the most popular model being a turbo five cylinder, propelling the Coupe to 62 mp/h in 6.3 seconds. And just like the Rolls-Royce in the previous shoot, the cars seem to juxtapose the setting, yet fit in quite nicely.
Just up the road from the Fiat’s was this rather odd Renault Megane sedan. These Megane’s are usually hatchbacks, so it is a rare sight to see them in their sedan layout. This is also the only shot to include cars older than the proposed 2009 Scrappage Scheme. The bright white Megane contrasts the overgrowth, as well as the grubby Fiat 500. i wanted the Megane to take centre stage in this photography as it’s an oddity which isn’t seen all too much, and with a quick database check, it’s possibly the cleanest 2003 Megane around, with only 83000 miles, and passing every MOT apart from a few with minor issues. It is nice to see this Renault, baring down on 20 years old standing the test of time.
The final two shots are of the same Ford KA parked outside Watergate, above the quay. The KA is also a design that has stood the test of time, with the KA’s design originating from the early 1990′s, and being introduced in 1996. It is hard to believe that this design is of a similar age to me, as it looks, even today, to be modern and contemporary. As I took the first photograph (top), Thom was towards the back looking towards the block of flats, with him saying: “oh dude this is the one”. With one shot left, I had a look and he was right! It is possibly my favourite image to date and perfectly sums up what I want to be doing with this project. It manages to document the ageing, banal and boring cars that litter our urban landscape, as well as the urban landscape itself. I also like the addition of Kodak Portra 160. Despite it being less versatile than it’s 400 counterpart, it is a lot cheaper and finer grained. I do like the film’s overall aesthetic and quality, and it seems to match well with the Mamiya’s lenses.
The advent of Coronavirus has put a spanner in the works in terms of image creation for MMV. This was the last roll that was shot before social distancing, self isolation and quarantine was a regular occurrence and a requirement. This could mean the shooting the Mamiya 7ii could be placed on the back burner, and shooting digitally could be the only way that this project can progress. This does seem to change how I shoot, and I fear I won’t be able to create the work that I want to be able to create. I will however be shooting the 7ii at the same time as the 5D, and getting it developed when I am able to get back to Plymouth. I am of course able to send film off to be developed and scanned via postal order, but I cannot afford this with the amount that I am shooting, seeing as it is around £15-£20 per roll in total. So I shall develop the rolls at my local lab, and scan them at home when I am able to get back home.
