In this Kelly Lamb Interview. Those attracted to the Social Justice Movement need to stop being driven by emotion. You must stop demonizing others and find solutions together with others. Activists who are all in are almost impossible to reach, but they can be influenced to be others when they come to an end of themselves. I was thinking about radio - at first because of sarafan radio, then because of illegal radio stations in USSR where the forbidden bands and bards could be heard, among other things. Bard connection could be especially interesting, because of Clara ending being connected to both the tradition (town) and the "future" (polyhedron), and how the minstrels and troubadours go way back to middle ages and further and yet found a new life in the bards?

And of course the jester connection, the trickster connection. Also the association with travelling and beggars and travelling performers. So I think radio kinda fits? Sorry for a long rant, I hope you don't mind))

Radio fits because it’s a medium for broadcasting, reaching as big an audience as can be reached. Unlike film or theater that make a bigger impact but have more limited outreach. All of it is about (among other things) spreading of ideas which is viral in nature. A bit of information jumps from human to human in the same way a virus does, mutates and adapts along the way. The term ‘meme’ (derived from gene) comes from this analogy.

The entire game is about the clash of ideas, which worldview prevails, which set of beliefs comes out on top. The Plague is an active participant in this clash, therefore all the talk about it having its own agency, having a voice and so on. It is fitting for Clara to be both the Plague and a Saint. Religion, or a strong moral ideology, is a nice counterweight to something as powerful as an ideology of Destruction (Plague can be a metaphor for fascism, which is a death cult).

Internet would be an even better metaphor for Clara, seeing how it facilitates both the rise of fascism and, well, wokeism. But radio works well enough.

In its brief existence, Do No Harm has already crafted model legislation to restrict gender-affirming care, which has been enacted in at least two states. According to an Accountable for Equality report, Do No Harm established a political lobbying arm, registering to lobby in nine states. This rapid expansion and legislative impact underscore the group’s potential to influence national policy on transgender rights.

Do No Harm shares staff, contractors, and legal advisors with organizations controlled and funded by Leo. According to public records, the group has received $3 million from Leo’s network, which includes substantial contributions from Chicago billionaire Barre Seid, who donates to right-wing causes, Accountable for Equality reports. This funding has enabled Do No Harm to employ nearly two dozen employees and fellows, including influential anti-trans activist and detransitioner Chloe Cole. Cole, who identified as a boy, transitioned at age 12 and detransitioned at 17. The 20-year-old now advocates against gender-affirming care. The rise of Do No Harm represents a new chapter in the conservative movement’s ongoing efforts to influence American politics and policy. An Accountable for Equality staffer emphasized that Leo’s involvement in this anti-transgender agenda is particularly alarming, as it weaponizes health care decisions that should remain between patients and their doctors.

Gender-affirming care, which includes medical and psychosocial interventions designed to affirm individuals’ gender identities, is well-documented to improve the mental health and overall well-being of transgender and nonbinary youth. Research from Columbia University and other institutions has shown that such care reduces rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation among transgender youth. However, Do No Harm and its legislative efforts threaten to undermine these benefits by restricting access to essential medical treatments. Do No Harm has put forward several documents that support its legislative and advocacy efforts, often prepared by affiliated law firms. One such document is the Justice for Adolescent and Child Transitioners Act” (also known as the JUST FACTs Act). Wokeism - mutilate your young child and spare your dog

Ok, so I need some help here.

There's a particular set of ideological currents that have emerged in the American leftist and left-liberal spheres over the past decade or so, and they don't really have a commonly accepted name. Depending on who you ask, they may be called "woke(ism)", "radlib(ism)", "woke ideology", and so forth. But I don't think any of these are very good names, because they're all both ambiguous and highly charged. To be clear, what I'm referring to is not synonymous with the broad (and considerably older) concepts of "social justice" or "identity politics", but is rather a much more specific strain of thought that exists within those headings.

Anyway, the point is that I'd like some help coming up with a clear, neutral, and relatively unambiguous way to refer to this ideological current. Below I've tried to describe the exact things I'm referring to in more detail, so maybe someone can suggest a good term.

Since this strain of thought (as far as I can tell) emerged more-or-less organically within the online and college-campus left over the course of a decade, there is no definitive Woke Canon or whatever that I can refer back to in defining what I'm talking about. So I've tried to come up with a list of characteristics that I think, uh, characterize a sort of Ur-Wokeism. That is to say (in the interest of not strawmanning anyone) that I am not claiming all adherents of "wokeism" believe everything I've listed. Rather, I'm trying to present the form of "woke" or "radlib" thought that I feel is most sharply distinguished from other left-wing currents, with the acknowledgement that most people will fall along a spectrum between these beliefs and others.

(But Ur-Wokeism is still not a good name, because in addition to referring only to this exaggerated form, it's even more charged than the other terms are!)

I think Ur-Wokeist positions can roughly be divided into an ontology, an epistemology, and an ethics. The characteristics of the ontology are something like this:

a characterization of society as being made up of different, interlocking, but absolutely rigid identity categories with in-built power relations between them (privileges)

an association of each category with an inherent and immutable psychological essence (usually attributed to socialization), which collectively both create and are created by the aforementioned power relations

something approaching a codification and formalization of this system of identity categories, such that new categories can be invented and slotted into the existing system as if they'd always been there (the logical end point being that post about barlo and kaan)

The Ur-Wokeist epistemology is then a sort of vulgar standpoint epistemology:

owing to the immutable psychological differences between identities, people of different identity categories are fundamentally inscrutable to one another (cf. this twitter post about Americans and Iranians having nothing in common). It is therefore impossible for people of different identities to meaningfully understand one another

when communicating with someone of a less powerful identity, it is the responsibility of the person with the more powerful identity to believe whatever they say without question so long as it is qualified as being derived from their "lived experience". Since their experiences are fundamentally foreign and inscrutable, this is the only reliable way to avoid beliefs which are harmful

I think the most important part of Ur-Wokeism, though, is the ethics that then follow from all this. They're characterized by:

an identification of the relative power imbalances (privileges) between different identity categories as the core locus of social injustice, and a conception of these privileges as a sort of original sin held by members of the privileged category

an identification of speech and media, rather than material conditions, as the primary mechanism by which these privileges manifest

a focus on personal and individualized atonement for privilege, and public confession of one's privileges, as the primary avenue by which to remedy injustice

likewise, a focus on maintaining purity of thought as a necessary component of justice-seeking. This means shunning the impure and avoiding any direct engagement with the opposition.

the construction of an elaborate and ever-evolving system of avoidance speech that must be performed in order to mitigate the inherent harm that privileged individuals cause to the less-privileged

the characterization of all harm, including failure to adhere to the various purity requirements, as a form of violence

Ontologically and epistemically, I'm struck be the parallels to Orientalism. I think there might even be some level of direct descent via subaltern-studies types, though perhaps the concept of an inscrutable other is just very deep rooted in people. The ethics, on the other hand, are very individualistic and extremely protestant.

But, ok, I don't want to be accused of the age-old vice of Making Up A Guy To Get Mad At. So I'll just say that this is all a characterization of only the most exaggerated form of this thought. And it's certainly not all things I disagree with; I do think (for example) that it's pretty undeniable that culture constructs different identity categories and power imbalances between them, in ways not entirely reducible to material conditions. And that these imbalances contribute significantly to injustice. I just think that these categories are a lot more mutable and culturally contingent than most people of the woke persuasion seem to believe, and I think the best solutions are systemic and not individual.

Anyway, I was originally asking about names, I think? Yeah, so, anybody got a good name for this?

The Father We Need Fr. Paul D. Scalia

Most of us know today’s Gospel scene (Lk 2:22-40) as the Fourth Joyful Mystery: The Presentation in the Temple. But it is also one of the Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of Saint Joseph. His heart is filled with sorrow at Simeon’s prophecy that the Christ Child “is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed.” At the same time, Joseph rejoices to hear his Son proclaimed as the Lord’s “salvation” and “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to…Israel.”

Now, we should all sorrow and rejoice when meditating on this scene. But Joseph experiences this sorrow and joy in a unique manner: as the father of Jesus. Indeed, his experience of this event flows from and points to the reality of his fatherhood.

We often use various qualifiers for Joseph’s fatherhood. Although accurate to an extent, they can also give the impression that his fatherhood was a fiction or make-believe. The term “Earthly Father” suggests a father/son relationship limited to this world. “Foster Father” or “Adoptive Father” both imply that at some point our Lord became Joseph’s son. In fact, Joseph and Mary were legally married at the time of Christ’s conception. So, at no point in our Lord’s life was He not the Son of Joseph.

The Gospels don’t use any qualifiers. Today’s passage refers to Joseph and Mary straightforwardly as Jesus’ “father and mother.” Later, at the finding in the Temple, our Lady herself says, “Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” (Lk 2:48) Twice John refers to our Lord simply as “the Son of Joseph.” (Jn 1:45; 6:42) The only qualification in the Gospels is parenthetical: Luke’s mention of Jesus as “the son (as was supposed) of Joseph.” (Lk 3:23) Since this comes immediately after our Lord’s Baptism, it is clearly meant to distinguish Christ’s Father revealed at the Jordan from His father known in Nazareth.

It is fatherhood that Pope Francis emphasizes in Patris Corde, his letter announcing the Year of Saint Joseph (December 8, 2020 through December 8, 2021). And with good reason. As many have observed, the crisis of fatherhood is at the source of our Church’s and our nation’s woes. At the core of the Church’s scandals is the betrayal of spiritual fathers. Our nation’s upheaval is the inevitable result of decades of absent fathers. Mary Eberstadt has called it “the fury of the fatherless.”

Joseph’s fatherhood is a necessary medicine for these ills. But first, we have to get it right. Our failure to appreciate Joseph’s fatherhood lies in our misunderstanding of fatherhood itself. We confine fatherhood to its physical, earthly dimensions; it is the biological siring of a child or perhaps the equipping of the child for success in this world. In fact, the greater part of fatherhood is not begetting a child or training him for worldly success. No, it is the imparting of wisdom, patrimony, and identity.

Precisely because he is not Jesus’ biological father, Joseph calls our attention to the deeper, more important dimension of fatherhood. He did not generate our Lord, nor does he have any worldly means to bestow upon Him. But as the husband of Mary, Joseph is in fact Jesus’ legal father – a designation with much greater meaning in ancient Israel than in our culture. It was Joseph’s duty to raise his Son in the traditions and faith of Israel, to pass on to Him the practices and wisdom of God’s people. Insofar as “Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man” (Lk 2:52), it fell to Joseph to teach Him how to pray, to bring Him to the synagogue, and to familiarize Him with scripture.

“We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what deeds thou didst perform in their days, in the days of old.” (Ps 44:1) It is wonderful to consider Joseph teaching this verse to our Lord, introducing Him to the patrimony of Israel, to what “our fathers have told us.” Those fathers had bestowed an identity on their children, had brought them to know who they were – and were not – in the world and in history. The fidelity of those fathers meant that the Israelites knew themselves as God’s people.

This is precisely what fathers in our culture have failed to do. They might give their children some material wealth and advice on how to get ahead in the world – or at least how to be comfortable. But for decades fathers have failed to give their children their proper identity. They have failed to pass on the patrimony of the West, of our nation, and most of all of Christianity.

This is in large part because those fathers had themselves impiously rejected what came before them. Impiety is sterile. Since the past meant nothing to them; so now they have nothing for the future. Worse still, being orphaned from the past makes one vulnerable in the present. So, what we see in “wokeism” is an orphaned generation, cut off from its patrimony of wisdom and culture, and thus prey to whatever new theories come along.

We have seen the same phenomenon in the Church. Impious priests, for whom the past was meaningless, failed to hand on to generations of Catholics their rightful inheritance of the Church’s teachings and liturgy. So much of our current sickness comes from this disconnect, this forgetfulness of who we are – and who we are not – in the world and in history.

Time to “go to Joseph.” (Gen 41:55) From him, the father of Jesus, we learn the true meaning of fatherhood and the incomparable worth of a man who faithfully fulfills that mission.

All your examples point to it being a stupid fad! Best selling books? Remember all the new age esoteric crab that is on that list all the time? Pedantic edit wars on Wikipedia about meaningless bullshit? Gee thats convincing. Corporate season? Critical race theory sounds refreshing compared to the drivel I have to listen in that usually. Six sigma anybody? Seeing wokeism as this extremely compelling mind poison instead of a dumb, deeply unpopular idea of a small group is just incomprehensible.

I already made the mistake of underestimating it once on the basis that people weren’t stupid and evil enough for it.  I’m not interested in making that same mistake again.

Look at the differences in academic performance by group, and then look at how durable and resistant-to-intervention those differences are.  Jewish people are a consistently high-performing minority group.  This enables a tactic of “Jew-counting” where someone starts counting Jewish people in high-ranking positions, determines that they are “over-represented” relative to their population, and then makes a leap to assuming that it’s a conspiracy.  (People continue to do that to this day, and then become antisemitic white nationalists.)

Hitler didn’t round people up and murder them on the basis of provable membership in a conspiracy; he rounded them up on the basis of their ancestry.  The Nazis must have believed in an innate racial collusion which automatically made all Jewish people conspirators to advance the cause of Jewish people as a race.

To put it in modern words, all Jewish people would have unremovable “Jewish privilege” as a result of their “subconscious bias” and knowingly or unknowingly act to advance “Jewish supremacy.”

But because we don’t know how to improve the performance of non-Jewish Germans, just like we don’t know how to improve the performance of various groups today, “countering Jewish supremacy” (as measured in “being over-represented”) must mean oppressing Jewish people in some way or another.  It is not actually possible for Jewish people to comply with the demand to “stop being Jewish supremacist” because they are not actually collectively engaged in any sort of conspiracy.

So the upper limit of “this group is doing too well; it must be mass subconscious collusion” is mass murder.  The viewpoint driving it was quite popular and did a lot of damage.

How did we “solve it”?  We made it socially prohibited to count Jewish people.  This move was justified, but obviously it still doesn’t work completely as a containment strategy - some people with high racial attachment still count Jewish people, flip out, and become (sometimes violent) antisemites.

Now in practice, many of the people pushing woke doctrine are white.  But there are a lot of things that can be done that are beneath that ceiling, including targeting “rednecks” and “Trumpers” and other subsets of the white population.  Whites also won’t be a majority forever, and so discriminatory policies similar to the university admissions discrimination applied to asians might be put into place at the high water mark and then political will to remove them might never come around later.
