51: Screaming Females // All At Once

All At Once Screaming Females 2018, Don Giovanni (Bandcamp) After 18 hard-touring years and eight LPs, Screaming Females are probably still best known for a Sheryl Crow cover and Marisa Paternoster appearances on greatest guitarist listicles as the token post-Bonnie Raitt lady entry. As perhaps the most reliable live act in indie rock, Paternoster and her band deserve a lot more for their efforts than that. Her Ann Wilson-sized voice could kill a good-sized bird in mid-flight if she aimed it right, and high gain amps follow her around music stores like tame squirrels hoping to be fed. Seeing the Females live though, it’s clear that Mike Abbate, a menhir of a bassist, and platonic-ideal-of-an-alternative-rock-drummer Jarrett Dougherty are just as important to their power. The first time I watched the trio twister through seven head-spinning minutes of “Doom 84” (from 2012’s Ugly), it was as immense a force as I’ve felt a rock band generate.

Every Screaming Females album is good: All At Once just happens to be the one they were touring when they left my jaw literally hanging. At 15 songs and 51 minutes it’s just long enough to press as a double LP, and it might have a tad more impact if they’d’ve dropped two or three songs—but it’s a mark of the record’s quality that I doubt any two listeners would pick exactly the same two or three to cut. It’s also their catchiest record. “I’ll Make You Sorry” dives into pop punk after years of flirtation; “My Body” does happy Sheer Mag as well as Sheer Mag ever has; and the feet-up contentment of “Bird in Space” is about as close as they’ve come to a Ted Leo song.

You might not need every Females LP, but you should probably have at least one. Why not this one?

the six of them all sat outside around the firepit, the older of the two brothers and their parents all talked to each other as the youngest two sat together and talked softly.

"god they are so smitten with each other." jack groaned quietly, throwing his head back in annoyance.

quinn looked down at the drink in his hand before taking a sip and responding, "oh come on, you gotta admit they're cute."

his mom nodded from the other side of jack, "your brother has a point."

quinn, jack, ellen, and jim all sat watching luke and y/n as they talked with their hands, both of them with mock annoyed looks on their faces.

y/n was wearing one of luke's hoodies, the wind making it a little chillier than she had planned it to be. her chair was turned so it was facing the side of luke's, her legs crossed beneath her as they continued whatever conversation they were having, luke just watching her with his one hand underneath his chin.

"i can't tell if luke is actually annoyed or if he's actually enjoying whatever she's talking about."

"please, he always looks like that when she talks." jack scoffed, "he looks at her like she hung the stars if she even breathes."

jim stayed silent, both enjoying his older son and middle son arguing and how happy his youngest looked. ellen made a few comments here and there but mostly kept to herself with a content smile on her face.

after a few moments of bickering, jack finally relented, "okay, fine, they are cute. but come on, you also have to admit that they are a little cheesy."

the other three nodded in agreement, they couldn't really disagree with him. they just watched the two continue to talk until jack spoke again, "what do you think they're talking about anyway?"

*with luke and y/n*

"fine, i get your cereal-soup argument, but there's nothing you can say to convince me that a hot dog is a damn sandwich."

"i wasn't going to convince you that a hot dog was a sandwich. it's not."

the two looked at each other, "how did we even get on this topic?"

"i don't know, something about like top ten most debated topics."

"and cereal being a soup was one of them?"

"no, i think we actually started talking about how tacos and burritos weren't sandwiches first and then we brought the cereal thing up."

luke just nodded, sparing a glance over at the rest of his family, "have they been watching us the whole time?"

she looked to where luke was looking and blushed, looking down, "i don't know."

"do you think they know we're talking about food classifications right now?"

y/n looked up again and at his family, "definitely not."
