Chapters: 1/2
Fandom: Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman
Ratings: Explicit
Relationships: Marquis de Carabas/Richard Mayhew
Characters: Marquis de Carabas (Neverwhere), Richard Mayhew, Door (Neverwhere), Hunter (Neverwhere)
Additional Tags: Richard's Gay Awakening, Canon Compliant, Richard learns he's gay AND kinky, Dom/sub, Fingering, Anal Sex, if this was in the marquis's pov it would just be him salivating, no beta we die like hunter
Summary:
Richard Mayhew would like to go on record and say that he is 100% straight, thank you very much.
In all his years, he has never once felt an inkling of desire for any man he has ever met. Sometimes he stared at Leonardo DiCaprio’s face a little longer than he thought he should, and perhaps he was a little too interested in Brad Pitt’s personal life than most men, but never once has he felt that way about any man he’s ever actually talked to.
So, it’s a little bit surprising that he’s almost half-hard watching the Marquis de Carabas threaten the woman who just kissed him.
(Or: Richard has his gay awakening.)

No but fr, just ask for them bc the pure joy that comes from someone who's equally invested in whatever little weird tales my mind has spun, is simply unparalleled
Do you ever read a fic so interesting you want behind the scenes lore, ten pinterest moodboards and one of those fancy .gif edits but none of that exists bc it's a fanfic?

Fandom Bingo: Neverwhere
August is Neverwhere Bingo! I think most people prefer one of Neil Gaiman's other books, but Neverwhere was the first one I read way back when, and it's still a favourite now, largely because of the worldbuilding and in no small part because of the Marquis ;) Anyway, I was cleaning my room and found my copy of Neverwhere so I thought I'd do that this month.
As always, this bingo is multifandom so you don't need to know the source material to participate.
**Signups here! Open until September 5th.**
General Rules:
You can interpret the prompts any way you want. If you think it fits, then it fits. All prompts, including the quotes, can just be used as inspiration or a general fit, no need to actually include them word for word in the fanwork, and tenses and pronouns can be swapped accordingly.
You can write for any fandom you want, including crossovers and original works.
You can combine multiple prompts in one fanwork.
Each submitted fanwork should be new and complete, but it can be a standalone, part of a series, or one chapter of a multi-chaptered fic.
This bingo is primarily geared towards fanfic, but any medium is fine if you feel you can do it.
For fanfic, the minimum is 100 words with no maximum.
You can use fanworks submitted for this event for other events as well, so long as it’s okay with the other side too.
While signups are only open for a month, there is no time limit for completing a card.
This round's bingo only offers 3x3 cards. Everyone can sign up for a maximum of FOUR cards (please send in one form per card).
After submitting a form, please give me up to a week to reply with your card.
All content and ratings are allowed but please tag everything appropriately, especially if there’s trigger-warning content.
Please be respectful of each other. If you see content tags you don’t like, just scroll past and move on.
All works must be your own creation. No plagiarism. No AI-generated works.
To Finish a Card:
Get a bingo! This can be: 🪽 1 horizontal row 🪽 🪽 1 vertical column 🪽 🪽 1 diagonal line 🪽 🪽 2 diagonal lines 🪽 🪽 or a blackout 🪽
Fill out the completion form (1 form/card).
When Posting:
You can post your fanworks to this AO3 collection here.
If you make a Tumblr post for your fanwork, remember to ping @fandombingo and tag #NeverwhereBingo so I can reblog it.
On your post, please clearly indicate the Fandom, Prompt(s), Rating, and Tag(s)/Content Warning(s).
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to send in an ask!

Thank you!
Favorite Color: Turquoise or any shade of lighter blue, really. It’s pretty.
Last Song: Castle On The Hill - Ed Sheeran.
Other Stuff I Watched This Year: I couldn’t tell you. Life’s been chaotic. Work has been busy. I’ve been teleporting around everywhere.
Last Movie: Before I Wake. It was … interesting.
Currently Watching: Nothing at the moment — I’ve been a busy little murder hornet bee.

Currently Reading: Neverwhere. Shhh, I bought it, read a couple of chapters, and haven’t had time to pick it up since. It’s really good, too!
Currently Listening To: Closer To The Edge - Thirty Seconds To Mars. Peruse my Spotify playlist if you’d like. It’s called Beyond Ineffable, and it’ll probably give you whiplash.

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better:
was tagged by @ivorydice, thank you! <33
three ships I like: Ignis/Noctis (final fantasy xv), Merlin/Arthur (bbc merlin), and Roy/Ed (fullmetal alchemist)
first ship ever: I mean. when I was aware of shipping, it'd be heero/duo from gundam wing. but I was so big into usagi/mamoru from sailor moon before I discovered shipping/fandom proper. and hell as a kid I adored Simba and Nala from the lion king as a couple lmao, even had a poster from their love scene over my bed 😂
last song you heard: fmfjdk sushi glory hole by the lonely island, don't judge me lol
favourite childhood book: I... never had one until I read neil gaiman's neverwhere as a teenager. I had too many I loved to pick just one.
currently reading: reading is hard these days, whether it's tradpub or fanfic :/
currently watching: pfft. can't remember the last time I watched something
currently consuming: philly cheesesteak pizza and sweet tea
currently craving: chicken enchiladas, sleep, friends, for the writer's block to go away, a less broken body lol
tag nine people: I'm always worried if I tag someone and they don't wanna do it, they're gonna get mad lmao. so no pressure! ignore if you want (: @thisfairytalegonebad, @quartzguts, @queen-tashie, @armajestyy, @misshappenpebble, @bleed-peroxide, @kryptodrakonprogenitor, @knightofflames, @smallest-turtle

Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
@kkoraki Thanks for tagging! :3 Oh my GOD I forgot how many Marguerite O'Henry books we read independently. Every time I think of horse breeds I think of Justin Morgan and King of the Wind; and Misty of Chincoteague lives in my head rent free.
3 Ships You Like: Hmm. I really don't ship anymore, other than OCs. Fallen London is kind of bereft of in-game ships; it's all OC/game chars. Harvestar's Sunless Skies Amelia/Driver is awesome though. Maybe Paul/Chani in honor of Dune 2 coming out? So many fucking problems with that ship, lol. Hm. Jesper/Wylan from Six of Crows 'cause I can't think of another ship.
First Ship Ever: Jenna/Balto from Balto. :') Actually no, if we're going REALLY far back, it would've been adult!Napoleon/Nancy from the Napoleon movie 1995 which was my FIRST FORAY INTO FANFIC and I started looking online for 'places to post stories'. God, I forgot about that. If I'd been older when I was into Call of the Wild I probably would've shipped Dave/Buck. Listen. I had a very active imagination and was trapped indoors with a bunch of books. What do you want from me?
Last Song You Heard: Eastward of Eden by Amelia Day on repeat.
Favorite Childhood Book: Call of the Wild got banned to the box because I read it so much. :') Otherwise: Girl with the Silver Eyes, by Willo Roberts.
Currently Reading: Hoping to pick up Neverwhere this week!
Currently Watching: Mashle (anime)
Currently Consuming: Large Earl Grey, hot
Currently Craving: Something for Dinner ((I am not picky))
Tagging: @harvestar, @ardenrosegarden Keeping it short but if anyone else would like to do it, please do!!

new book looks interesting! the big question, does it have smut 🤣
Thank you!! That's a big question though, since I don't know what your comparisons are lol
Some characters in Rare Birds have sex on the page but it's not a romance nor romantasy not smutfic. That's not criticism against those things since I've written plenty of smutfic - maybe you even read it, and that's why you're asking! In which case these scenes might feel tame.
When I write fanfic it's about filling all the gaps (innuendo? at 8am?? yes) and exploring the source material's relationships in obsessive detail. Whereas this book IS source material. It suggests, it leaves gaps. This series is plot-heavy and the first book just happens to revolve around other things. Currently there's a trend for queer fantasy which delves deep into the central attractions and that's delicious but not the deal here.
If a reader approaches Rare Birds like an adventure fantasy, adult but not 18+ Spicy Adult, more like Gaiman's Neverwhere or something, then I don't think they'll be disappointed.

I'm just in the middle of reading your Neverwhere fanfic and I'm so feral about it and know more about old German architecture than I thought I needed.
Love your characterization and storytelling ability and God I hope to see more of marquis and Richard because we are so poor provided in this section.
Thank you very much, I'm so happy you're enjoying it!!! <3
Fun fact about the old German architecture: I didn't even plan it that way, but at the end I realised that there are four (4) fountains (all within about 10min walking distance of each other in the real world) I somehow managed to make relatively important to the plot. Two of them were designed by the same artist, it turns out! I didn't even *know* one was technically a fountain until I did research on it! The fountain-to-fic ratio really is bafflingly high in this one.
Agreed on Richard and the Marquis - I love the ship, think it's more integral to the novel itself than it seems at first glance, and wish there was more content. I've enjoyed what little there is, scattered around the internet, but it's definitely more of a little rowing boat than a *ship*...
(For my Tumblr followers who might not follow my Ao3: the Neverwhere fic in question is Rings of Brass and Iron (rated M, 37k), which I wrote for the Sufficiently Advanced fic exchange.)

From your most recently watched shows/movies and your most recently read books/comics/mangas, what are your favorite characters and why? :)
I’ve been rereading Neverwhere (I’ve been rereading it for about three months because I’ve been reading a lot more fanfic than novels lately lol) and I have to go with Croup and Vandemar! I love them so much.
I think it’s mainly their voices that I love so much, and the way that they’re almost the same person in practice. They have a certain Hazel-and-Cha-Cha about them in that way - they’re assassins. Mr Croup likes words and talking to his victims. Mr Vandemar likes food and killing people. They always finish each other’s sentences, they wear matching ill-fitting suits, and nobody can escape them. If you’re getting assassinated by Croup and Vandemar, it’s over for you!
I just love the way they speak, as well. (Context for this extract: Croup and Vandemar’s employer accidentally revealed that they weren’t intending to pay them properly for their services.)
“Jam tomorrow, eh?” said Richard. “Don’t like jam,” said Mr Vandemar. “Makes me belch.” Mr Croup wiggled a finger at Mr Vandemar. “It’s welching out on us,” he said. “You don’t welch on Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar, me bucko. We collect our debts.” Mr Vandemar walked over to where Mr Croup was standing. “In full,” he said. “With interest,” barked Mr Croup. ”And meathooks,” said Mr Vandemar.
aren’t they fabulous???
This ask was probably referring to Death Note characters primarily, but it is so difficult to choose a favourite character in that! I suppose I do love L. And Ryuk. Though mainly what I love about that manga is the dynamic between Light and L, more than the individual characters, so it’s tricky to choose between them! Hence why I am answering for Neverwhere instead.

I have a complex relationship with writing descriptions because:
I feel that long descriptions drag down the pace
my narrators are often infected with my own habit to notice thoughts and feelings more than their physical environment
I've written / am writing a lot of fanfic, where over-description is counterproductive, because the audience already knows what characters (and many settings) look like, and re-stating the obvious makes for a boring read
even outside of fanficiton, I honestly think that in the modern age, people know what most things look like (and google image search exists), so description needs to serve more purpose than just describing
My favorite descriptions in others' writing (and thus, ones I try to aim for, myself) are those that do any combination of the following:
create a clear, striking image with few words ("The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel" - William Gibson, Neuromancer)
instantly conjure an atmosphere ("Car lights strobe through busted motel blinds" - Chuck Wendig, Blackbirds)
highlight a distinctive detail/attribute about a person ("he smiled, widely, and just a fraction too late, with teeth that looked like an accident in a graveyard" - Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere)
reveal something about the narrator, be it their relationship with the subject being described, their worldview, personal history, etc. (no immediate quote springs to mind, but this is such a broad category, most good descriptions will tick this box)
But also, because I avoid dumping description in blocks, I often get carried away with telling the story and forget to interweave description throughout. I think it's useful for me to keep a note to self while editing, something like "atmosphere check!".
Anyone here struggle with the same? Also, anyone got a favorite description that has really stuck with you?

I was tagged by my new frand @gege-wondering-around for this little ask game, and I'd love nothing more than to take time out of my stupid schedule and do something fun for a minute. Thank you ❤️
hardcover or paperback // bookstore or library // bookmark or receipt dog ear // standalone or series // nonfiction or fiction // thriller or fantasy // under 300 pages or over 300 pages // children’s or ya // friends to lovers or enemies to lovers // read in bed or read on the couch // read at night or read in the morning // keep pristine or mark up // cracked spine or dog ear //
While I like Fantasy, I have to be really into it because they tend to be very wordy and drawn out for me. Even a decent thriller can keep my ND ass involved pretty well. And under 300 is ideal for keeping my interest, unless it's a really compelling story.
Currently reading:
I'm reading mostly just fanfic right now. I've been moving house and it's stealing every moment of my life right now. So I try to relax with some fanfic after being bruised and battered.
Just finished:
Gosh, it's been so long since I was able to devote time to a book between writing, self employment, and now moving. The last thing I remember reading was The Unterhered Soul but that was mostly for coaching work. And then I started Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman but didn't finish that because life happened. I think my last finished book was Siddhartha by Herman Hesse or The Four Agreements for like the 50th time.
No pressure tags:

When and in what form were you introduced to Good Omens:
I read the book when I was 17, in the middle of my Neil Gaiman phase. I actually was not very impressed with it compared to his other works, I preferred books like Neverwhere and Stardust.
Have you recommended/watched GO with friends or family and how did they respond:
I watched S1 and S2 with my roommate, and a few friends watched S1, but while they enjoyed it they didnt get into the fandom.
When did the brainrot take over? aka at what point did your obsession start:
I went into the show only vaguely remembering that the angel had a bookshop that didnt sell books, and the car that was on fire. I came out fully obsessed and immediately dived into tumblr metas and fanfic.
Which is your favorite episode:
S1 - episode 3
S2 - either episode 2 or episode 6
Now word vomit about how much you love the series/characters and tell us what they mean to you:
Aziraphale and Crowley mean so much to me. I'm aroace and that was the first time I've seen a relationship on screen that I related to, and that I felt like I could aspire to. Through Good Omens I found a community of other aspec folks to talk to for the first time. Fandom got me through the horrors of 2020 as I threw myself into writing, and proved I could write prose after all. It's been an incredible experience and I can't wait for S3. (Even if I still find the book kind of meh)
Tumblr media
Hey Good Omens Fandom! While we're waiting for Season Three, let's get to know each other! This isn't a tagging game, so everyone is encouraged to share their answers. Let's get started with The Basics:

I firmly believe the angel Islington from Neverwhere is from the same universe as Aziraphale in Good Omens. It’ll be no coincidence otherwise and I would love to see the look on Crowley’s face on the night of Jessica’s party she held an angel exhibition.
It would be a mixture of pure joy and horror.
