Male Cerulean Warbler, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, and Lark Bunting, for Tonelli et al. 2023. Magnetic field disruptions lead migratory birds astray. Always a delight to contribute illustrations to papers like this one! Big thanks to Morgan Tingley for requesting these.

💙Rare Birds is available to preorder!💙
My queer fantasy series is now a thing!! I've been literally writhing with impatience to share this- and here it is, Book #1 of Hangfire.
What is it?
Rare Birds is adult historical fantasy, 344pp.
What's the plot?
As 1920s London swelters in the grip of Egyptomania, archaeology student Rom Godden uncovers a deadly family legacy. Along with her dearest friend, Rom joins forces with her sceptical brother to navigate an underworld of shapeshifters and blood magic. Deception stalks their path. Their precocious young stepbrother hides secrets of his own. If everyone plays for themselves, who can be trusted? One wrong choice could threaten everyone she loves, and Rom will have to bargain for her freedom as she confronts the truth of her inheritance: every promise has its price.
What's the vibes?
🗝 gratuitous historical references (you know my MO at this point)
🗝 chaos bisexuals (multiple). One of them wears a cravat
🗝 bonus sibling drama
Print or Digital?
Both! They'll be released on July 25 but they're up for presale now from Bookshop.org and everywhere else.
Advance copy giveaways will be happening over the next few months so sign up for the newsletter or keep an eye out here for that!

BOTD: Bermuda Petrel
Tumblr media

Bermuda Petrel (Pterodroma cahow)
As of making this post, the Bermuda Petrel is the second rarest seabird on the planet. Also known in Bermuda as the Cahow, it was believed to be extinct for 300 years until eighteen nesting pairs were found in 1951. Female Bermuda Petrels lay only one egg per breeding season, with 40-50% of these eggs failing to hatch.

Here are some of the new arrivals.
They are Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Buff Sussex, Black Turkey, and Barnevelder.
Housing arrangements were temporary because we also had a trio of Gold Laced Wyandottes due plus another Barnevelder to make another trio. Having two hens takes some of the pressure off them when you're rearing in such small groups.

The Flame of Spring (Scarlet Tanager) hangs out in my woods, but is often hard to spot. This is a beautiful rare bird and it’s always a joy when I get a glimpse of it. So bright.

Creature Awaits #191
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry.  Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Happy New Year! The Greeks were thought to have based the mythological Phoenix on the now extinct Bennu Heron (Ardea bennuides), so to kick off 2023, it feels fitting to feature a variety of gorgeous "living phoenixes" - extant herons from around the world. - 💕

The Capped Heron
Scientific Name: Pilherodius pileatus
Region: From southeastern Panama to southern Brazil
Size: About 1'6"-1'9" (~51cm-59cm) tall, with a roughly 1'7"-2' (~57.6cm-61cm) wingspan
Interesting Notes: Both male and female Capped Herons sport the same beautiful markings, and even juveniles of the species are only different by having slightly duller and darker grey feathers than their parents.
