Are you ready for something strange?

Five years ago, the world got weirder. It made sense of everything that followed, but that didn't help us poor schmucks caught in the crossfire. America was sealed off from the rest of the world, a vast network of demonic birds preventing anyone from fleeing the country. Fascists occupied the seat of the state, and violence and brutality was felt all over the country.

But there was still hope. The very reason America had been sealed away could be its salvation. The fae creatures known as Neverlanders are spilling out into America, cartoon creatures and demonic lawyers with a passion for drama and lunatic antics. The magical warriors also stand up to protect us, Divines who were once mortal but now wielding the great power of fairytale bullshit! With their efforts, we may be free. Our chains are designed to be broken!

The Neverland System is a tabletop game played with a deck of tarot cards and a big pile of PBTA-inspired moves. Failure is success and success can be torn from failure. Players only die when they want to and can literally bottle their feelings into jars before weaponizing and exploiting them.

There's no dice, but there is a tarot deck. ♥♦♣♠ Between tarot interpretations, snappy combat and courts (your standard fae classes) drenched in literary themes, you'll always be able to find a way out of any given situation and into a predictably worse one.

I got Kingdom Hearts in October 2002 when I was 8 years old. My family had just moved into a new house after my parents reunited from a nasty divorce. My dad and I went to Best Buy one night to look for a new microwave and he ended up letting me get this game that I’d been wanting for MONTHS. I’d seen every commercial for it on Disney channel and I was SO excited to finally hold it in my hands. I barely had any furniture in my room at the time - just my bed and my TV on the floor. I ran inside, overwhelmingly excited, turned on my PS2 and saw what was the most beautiful opening to any game or movie I’d ever seen before. Simple and Clean filled me with these big, huge, unexplainable feelings that still stick with me to this day. My friend Sarah (who was 3 years older than me) started playing it every weekend with me when she would come over. She was much better at it than I was and I loved watching her play because of it. My room felt like its own little world when it was just the two of us on the edge of my bed flying through Neverland until 1 in the morning.

After a long winter and my ninth birthday had passed, my parents were back to fighting. Big fights that no 9 year old should be subjected to. My mom would leave for days on end, succumbing to her addiction. My dad’s work would force him to go out of town on a weekly basis. So it was just me and a fridge full of frozen dinners to tide me over until one of my parents came back most of the time. I was an only child doing the very best I could to keep myself afloat. Things were dark to say the least and I was having to grow up at an alarming rate, but the one, *single* thing that kept my inner child alive during this was this silly little RPG that I loved so much. Even in an empty house on those nights when I really didn’t want to be alone, I still had Sora and Neverland. I still had those weekends with Sarah to look forward to. Things were far from ideal but I mean it wholeheartedly when I say this game saved me. It was my biggest source of comfort during some of the hardest times and I’ll always be so thankful I had it.

Somehow, I’m turning 30 this year and I’m still getting to watch new trailers come out for it. I’m still playing it with my friend Sarah on the weekends, only now, we’re both good at it. It’s followed me for almost my entire life and I still very much feel like that weird 8 year old girl jumping up and down at Best Buy whenever new content for it comes out.

I recently got a Kingdom Key tattoo as a tribute to the spikey-haired boy who made me laugh when I didn’t think I could. Who always reminded me to approach life with kindness and to find strength in the light. Who in so many ways, saved my life. Over and over again. I’m so happy to have a piece of him on me forever.

Happy Independent TTRPG Month!

July is Independent TTRPG Month and RPGPolls is joining in on the fun in celebrating small press games that are just as if not more fun than the famed Seattle game.

This is a little overdue but I have been exhausted between work, my GM-ly duties, and some projects I have going.

Non D&D focused polls to come but for now enjoy a list of small press games I enjoy under the read more. Happy Indie RPG Month and happy rolling!

Dungeon Crawl Classics (and its variants) - An absolutely gonzo OSR fantasy game and what I currently run at my table. Cannot recommend it enough.

Shadowdark RPG - A wonderful bridge between the OSR school of play and 5e. Don't know how available it is since the kickstarter just finished but I ran Andrew Kolb's Neverland using it and had a blast.

13th Age - A super simple d20 system made by some of the devs who worked on 3.5 and 4e. Plays like a wonderful blend of the two and makes natural rolls more important beyond the usual 1s and 20s. Super fun.

Fantasy AGE (and its variants) - A 3d6 system that's a lot of fun. Popularized by Wil Wheaton's Titansgrave setting/game. I feel like it's magic system is a little lacking but overall its a fast paced and creativity focused game.

The Apocalypse Engine - For the sake of simplicity and brevity, all PbtA games will be counted under here. Requires a lot of player creativity and buy in but overall super fun and versatile. An indie darling to be sure.a

Swords and Wizardry - One of the big three systems that basically started the OSR movement (the other two being OSRIC and Labyrinth Lord). Unfortunately I only played this system briefly and without understanding what it stood for. 5e came out like a month after I started to the campaign was quickly converted. Would love to revisit it.

The Cortex System - Mostly used this to play the Serenity RPG. It's a decent system and good for what it is but the combined die types as stats doesn't work with me.

GURPS - What Fallout was originally going to be based off of, GURPS is a monster of a generic system. If you can think of it, it's probably got a rule for it. Works best when you narrow it down and can be a little complicated. You may have better luck with

Savage Worlds - A more streamlined generic roleplaying game with tons of pre-made settings. The card initiative mechanic is a refreshing take on the mechanic and the bennie system is so much fun. Full props.

Crash Pandas, Honey Heist, Goblin Quest and anything by Grant Howitt - Solid gold, great, light, comedic games that are guaranteed to make for a night of fun. No notes. Goblin Quest in particular is heavily underrated imo.

We Are But Worms - Meets the bare definition of a roleplaying game. Play it constantly with my friends. All we have to do is look at each other, say one word, and the game gets going.

I could go on. There's a metric ton of RPGs that I've played and even more that I haven't but would love to. Fiasco (I can never get anyone to play with), Blades in the Dark, Candela Obscura, Mork Borg, the Black Sword Hack and so many others with more catching my eye every day. So take the remainder of this month (and beyond) to explore the community and play something you haven't - or maybe even never planned to. This hobby has so much more to offer than WotC and Paizo and so much more to offer than just roll high on a d20 in a fantasy game. Get out there and start rolling the bones (or not in some cases!) And have fun!

Methods of Arbitration - Metanarrativistic Non-Decision

 There may come a time where your decision becomes a Non-Decision because the nature of said decision threatens something outside of the scope of the game. It's impossible to list every example of a Non-Decision, as there are simply too many to count. Plenty of well-meaning mechanics may cause Non-Decisions, but there may also be times where the World sets the groundwork for a moment in time which forces a Non-Decision and ends the game abruptly while waiting for the collapse of the conditions which caused the Non-Decision to form in the first place. We'll cover five such examples here; I implore you to envision your own examples of Non-Decisions on your own time.

Example 1: Biological

 Jenna and Markus are playing a game with Socks, and Socks needs to use the restroom. Socks is not present, so the game cannot continue. Markus decides to leave the table to grab pizza. Socks returns and tries to play, but Markus has his mouth full. He finishes the bite he's on, and play resumes as normal; the Non-Decision collapses.

Example 2: Logistical

 Markus wants to purchase a new mace from a blacksmith. While he is making a purchase, Jenna wants to know what other stock the blacksmith has. The Emissary stammers, realizing they have not completed the storefront. They ask Jenna to wait while they complete the storefront. Upon completing the storefront, the Non-Decision collapses and the Emissary tells Jenna all about the knives the blacksmith is packing.

Example 3: Ethical

 Through some contrivance, a move that Socks wrote demands that a player abduct an endagered species to trigger the spell. Woven magic can actually write such a move, as absurd as it is; even so, to create a move which puts endagered animals in harm's way may cause other participants to experience discomfort. If Markus felt that abducting animals was unethical, he could ask that the move be struck down on ethical grounds, turning the result and activation of the move into Non-Decisions. Moves crafted in this way should be immediately refunded to collapse the Non-Decision.

Example 4: Traumatic

 Markus was beaten by his father with a belt at a young age, and the trauma of that situation has lasted into adulthood. Markus now feels uncomfortable when belts are used as a lashing tool. Jenna crafts a character who uses their belt as a whip, and Markus voices his discomfort with that idea. Jenna, being understanding and kind, realizes she will need to rewrite her character to make Markus feel welcome. The Non-Decision collapses as soon as she's adjusted her character to use snakes as whips instead.

Example 5: Epistemilogical (Setting)

 Socks has come face to face with The-Orb-That-When-Eaten-Destroys-The-Setting. They are tasked with protecting the orb from the Big Bad Evilest Ninja, but in a moment of chaotic energy they attempt to eat TOTWEDTS. This decision would immediately end the game; there would be no more game to enjoy. The other players voice dissatisfaction with the game ending so abruptly, and the Emissary decides that actually eating the TOTWEDTS is a Non-Decision that no player character could make, even accepting the consequences. Socks apologizes for being a little silly, and the party laughs. That would have been a funny way to end the story, but not today.

Example 6: Epistemilogical (Player)

 A participant has been injured in the course of play, or may be injured if the play continues. If any participant would take an action which may result in their death, injury or dismemberment, they are to stop playing immediately until the risk of death collapses. No sticking your hand in the wood-chipper to grab your dice, look both ways when you cross the street, and politely ask the man mugging you on the street to put away his gun, you are roleplaying right now. The Non-Decision collapses when all participants are safe and no longer at risk of death, injury or dismemberment.
