submissions open for a zine about neurodiversity!!

Hi!!! we're @faggotwalkwithme and @the-gooberrrrrrr, and we're organising a zine about neurodiversity for our IB CAS project!

Submissions are open here and are open til the 16th of September.

Submissions can be about anything as long as it relates to your own experience with neurodiversity! Just pitch your idea in the form and we'll invite you to the server (via neurodiver-zine on discord) and you'll have until Halloween to finish your piece! The aim of this zine is to raise awareness about experience of as many different neurotypes as possible, directly from people who experience them :)

Readthrough of Spectrum Goggles, my comic zine I drew back in April. It’s a cute lil comedic story about autism, relating to others, overcoming feelings of being an outsider, through the use of magic sc-fi goggles. I’m still vv proud of it!

I especially hope that other neurodivergent people, autistic or not, can find some meaning in this. Or at least a laugh!

i swear i can still smell the nail polish

This is a painting i’ve wanted to make for several years and i’m glad i finally did it over the summer! I made this entirely with nail polish for braindump zine ‘s issue on neurodiversity. Both the painting and a short comic outline I submitted deal with my experiences with ocd, dermatillomania, and trichotillomania.

Can confirm as someone into that scene too that music/punk/feminist/activist zines still use the old school printer aesthetic for newly created zines. If you go to stores that sell that stuff (like Silver Sprocket in the Bay Area, but there’s also a fair amount on Etsy) they still look like that. It’s largely fandom where “zine” now means glossy artbook or whatever that costs $50+

On Etsy it’s actually interesting how if you go even on a store that primarily sells fandom stuff, if they have a zine they sell that’s about some topic that’s closer to activism or whatever (e.g. queerness or neurodiversity or self care) it’ll be in the old 90s printer zine style. (And a lot of those are still pretty cheap, it just depends on where you look for those.)

Yeah, for sure! I ran around to various coffee shops, bookstores, music stores, etc. to get zine pics here, and there are still a lot of new oldschool ones around. (RIP the old Cody's Books and its huge zine rack. ;__;)

The zines I find current fans are most unfamiliar with are old fic ones. People generally know that there were K/S zines in the 70s, but they imagine them to look like either punk zines or modern artbook zines depending on what they're familiar with.

Meet Al Hess, the artist who painted this gorgeous painting that will accompany Stefany Z's article "ReMake Yourself"

Al Hess (he/him) is author of World Running Down, Key Lime Sky, Yours Celestially, and the award-winning Hep Cats of Boise series. He does portraits in both pencil and oil paint, and loves drawing fellow authors' characters nearly as much as his own. What was your inspiration for this painting?

I'm very into art deco aesthetics, so I wanted to imagine a non-binary person in a leadership role who embodied this fashion with a futuristic twist.

Anything else to add?

My next book, Key Lime Sky, comes out August 2024. It's a cozy and romantic small town alien invasion story with a non-binary, autistic, and part Indigenous main character and full of trippy weirdness, found family, and pie!
