Fandom Problem #5550:
"Stop headcanoning villains as LGBT/ Neuro-divergent! It's hurtful to actual LGBT/ Neuro-divergent people!"
My guy you've already headcanoned and claimed the hero, the main cast, the aliens, and the side characters as LGBT/ Neuro-divergent icons and representation, but all of a sudden giving the same treatment to the villains is crossing the line and hurtful to your cause?
Make everyone gay and neuro-divergent or Nothing! Because I don't trust your perception of who you think is the hero or the villain, either!

Since older adults have been more severely affected by acute COVID-19, researchers have hypothesized that older adults may have worse long COVID symptoms as well. But according to new research published in the Annals of Neurology, an official journal of the American Neurological Association, Northwestern Medicine researchers found on an average of 10 months after COVID-19 onset, younger (ages 18-44) and middle-aged (ages 45-64) adults had worse neurologic symptoms of long COVID than adults 65 and older. Symptoms included headache, numbness and tingling, problems with smell and taste, blurred vision, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue and a decrease in cognitive function. These symptoms occurred regardless of if the patient had mild or severe COVID-19 infections.
“While deaths from COVID-19 continue to decrease, people still get repetitive infections with the virus and may develop long COVID along the way,” said Igor Koralnik, MD, chief of neuroinfectious diseases and global neurology at Northwestern Medicine, who oversees the Neuro COVID-19 Clinic and is the co-director of the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive COVID-19 Center. “Long COVID is causing an alteration in patients’ quality of life. Despite vaccinations and boosters, about 30 percent of COVID patients develop some long COVID symptoms. These findings have an immense public health impact, given that long COVID significantly contributes to the leading global burden of disability and disease caused by the neurological disorders.”
STUDY HIGHLIGHTS
· The study included the first 1,300 patients at the Northwestern Medicine Neuro COVID-19 Clinic with neurologic long COVID symptoms between May 2020 and March 2023.
· Among those patients, 200 had been previously hospitalized for severe COVID-19 pneumonia while the rest had mild initial COVID-19 symptoms and never required hospitalization.
· The study is a first-of-its-kind to look at the neurologic symptoms of long COVID over an adult lifespan.
· The goal was to determine if the neurologic symptoms of long COVID affect adults differently based on their age group.
“The impact of long COVID is causing disproportionate morbidity and disability in younger adults in their prime who provide much of the workforce, productivity and innovation in our society,” Dr. Koralnik said. “This may have a negative impact on the economy and cause additional burden on the health care system. This study highlights the importance that people of all ages suffering from Long COVID should be provided with the necessary treatment and rehabilitation services to alleviate their symptoms and improve their quality of life.”
To date, the Neuro COVID-19 Clinic has treated more than 2800 long-haulers from 44 states. For more information, visit nm.org and to schedule an appointment, please call 312.695.7950.

Hello Doc, I was diagnosed with schizoid personality disorder recently but my therapist didn’t make a full diagnostic report. I asked her about it and she said she could write up an official report if I wanted it. Is it worth it? Do I need an official report?
That is a tough one. I will give you my thoughts on the matter, but do keep in mind that while I am a doctor I’m not your doctor and I can only comment on matters in a highly generalized fashion.
That said, in my opinion, yes. This is a significant diagnostic label and you deserve a fulsome explanation as to why your therapist has arrived at her conclusions. Understanding why she has made this determination may prove very helpful in terms of your ability to benefit from psychotherapy. In my opinion, the best clinical treatment plans are ones that are collaborative... where patient and doctor are equal partners in understanding the problem and crafting solutions.
Here I’m going to go on a tangent that may or may not be applicable to you…
The term ‘schizoid’ dates way back to 1908. Over the last century plus, the field of clinical psychology has progressed a long way… in particular it has become more refined in better understanding different types of typical and non-typical neurological functioning.
As such, the rate at which individuals have been identified as possessing schizoid features has significantly declined; matched with a substantial increase in those identified as being on the higher end of the autistic spectrum.
While schizoid personality and autism share many clinical features, the etiologies are drastically different. And this can have a huge impact on the relative efficacy of treatment approaches.
Traditional schizoid personality is characterized by a pervasive disinterest in social relationships, a solitary lifestyle, perceived emotional coldness, discomfort in interpersonal relationships, and a general sense of apathy toward the world writ-large. This is often matched with a vibrant internal world of elaborate fantasies and intense fixations on a variety of idiosyncratic interests.
Here we see a degree of overlap with autism. The importance difference, however, is that schizoid personality is viewed as manifesting from early attachment traumas where the individual comes to associate connecting with others as leading to rejection, pain and sorrow. The outer world has proven dangerous and unsatisfactory, leading to a retreat inward. This is not necessarily the case with autism. Autism is a neurological condition and autistic features are not ‘caused by’ early life traumas and insecurities of attachment.
Schizoid personality can be treated. The individual can be helped to come out of their shell and gradually cultivate a more gratifying inter-personal life. Autism, however, cannot be treated; it can’t be treated because it is not a disorder but rather a difference.
Instead of being treated, those who are autistic can be helped to embrace their differences and learn skills and strategies for navigating a world more oriented toward those who are neuro-typical.

unpopular head cannons?
Not sure which fandom you're asking for... I'll hit my main two right now, lol. And I don't know if they're actually unpopular or just...unique to me. So anyway...
Kim Possible
Drakken and Shego do in fact get married and want/have kids and get very domestic, post-canon. But. They remain in evil. They're just more lowkey about it.
Ron and Kim go to different colleges and break up for awhile. Ron starts seeing Yori seriously. Ultimately he realizes that yes, Kim IS the one for him, but he had to spend some time finding who he is without her to be his best self for her.
Ron also easily masters the monkey powers and they're not some big angsty problem for him. It's KP, come on. This is a lighthearted comedy cartoon.
Soul Eater
Stein is NOT some cannibalistic kinky blood-play neuro-divergent. He has some serious issues that never got addressed properly during his childhood, and so he struggles his entire life having to deal with these issues without any proper guidance. (Because burdening another child, Spirit, with that responsibility was a bad idea and sure as heck didn't work.) So he has his serious ups and downs since he has to figure everything out for himself, ultimately. But the common fandom treatments I often see of him just don't jive with what I see onscreen/on the page.
Stein didn't experiment on Spirit in the way it's implied. I think Kami convinced Spirit that worse things were going on than actually were out of jealousy, and I also think Spirit knew about the minor things that did go on. I think Spirit's comments to Blair about the experiments were drunken gross exaggerations, and he canonically does that (manga) soooooooo yeah. Lord Death simply wouldn't have kept Stein around if he was truly a threat, so the experiments couldn't have been that much. And I have plenty of ideas about just what went on...
Spirit did NOT sleep around!!! Now, hear me out. And I'll keep it brief cuz I could go ON about this! The man is a celebrity, and he is THE death scythe. He's gonna have adoring fans all over him no matter where he goes. Also, dancing with people??? Is a normal social interaction??? Since when does someone only dance with their spouse at a public gathering. The ONLY evidence we have of him "cheating" is the point of view of a five year old watching her celebrity dad interacting with people, when her mother isn't there. (Seriously...if Maka's fave memory of her mother is the divorce...where WAS the woman for her entire childhood???) And okay so moving past Maka's perspective and the fact that THE death scythe is gonna be surrounded by fans at all times (and you SoMa people y'all have the same headcanons about Soul so I know this isn't outside the realms of possibility) when we see Spirit in potentially compromising situations? What happens? His wife merely gets mentioned and he turns into a blubbering emotional disaster. You're telling me this man could have actually followed through on sleeping with another woman? In any case... His wife was simply not around, they had a loveless marriage that only occurred cuz of an illegitimate baby, and if he did seek attention elsewhere it's hard to blame him. But no, mister cries-at-the-mention-of-his-ex absolutely did not have it in him to sleep around. He's just a celeb trapped in a loveless marriage, and he's an attention whore. And yes this was me being brief.
Gonna stop there, ask again if you want more cuz boy do I have more! Thank you so much for the ask!!!

Parents be like “I don’t understand how you can have all these disorders and brain things, neither of us have any of those problems” and it’s like, Oh, my parents, my dear parents,
Mom you once grounded me for a weekend because I had moved my clean folded clothing in the drawers of my dresser into a different configuration. I moved the socks and underwear to a different drawer and sorted the t-shirts and shorts into one drawer and the long pants and long sleeve shirts into another drawer, instead of all shirts together and all pants together. This to you was enough of a transgression to justify no video games for two days.
Dad has car maintenance and gas mileage record books for cars he hasn’t owned in 3 decades, and a box of bandaids from the late 50′s that he saved because they were the last box of square end cut bandaids before they switched over to the rounded ends we know today.
Neither one of you is within sight of Neuro-typical and you never have been, they just didn’t HAVE treatment or diagnosis for these things when you were my age.

what is a neuro rehab you talked about before? how would that help you, never heard of it
Honestly not 100% sure. Mum said it would be inpatient (living and sleeping in the hospital), but I’m not sure what treatment there would be or what it would be like. Probably lots of different kinds of therapy and specific personal treatment plan , multi disciplinary.
My health overall is not good enough for that yet , but maybe it’s an option for the future. I’m still mostly bed bound and completely house bound so for now it’s just tiny small steps to see what’s even possible.
I have FND (which is what neuro rehab would be for) but I’m still really learning about it and processing my diagnosis so I’m still not sure what kinds of treatments they use for it. Plus I don’t know how much it’s possible to recover and how much of my problems is actually caused by FND or other things.
I know what symptoms is from what condition, but not sure how much impact each one has on me. And there is some overlap and sometimes different symptoms come together and make everything even more difficult. 🤷🏻♂️

long post with lots of discussion about dog urine for ppl interested in vetmed or who need time to kill this morning:
so the reason boone had a Vet Day yesterday is that about a week ago, seemingly without warning, he suddenly developed urinary incontinence. specifically if it’s been more than ~5-6 hours and he has a full bladder, he just kind of starts… overflowing. it’s not just a little trickle but he also doesn’t seem to be aware that it’s happening, and it’s happened at least once while he was sleeping/lying down. so for the past week almost every morning he’s just been trailing urine all over my house on the way to the yard. this did happen last year for 2-3 days but then spontaneously resolved, so when it seemed like it wasn’t fixing itself this time I brought him in for a workup.
good findings: no bladder tumors, no blood in urine, no drinking more than normal, no UTI (culture is still pending but no growth yet), prostate is normal, blood values are within range
bad findings: urine is low concentration - not “holy shit this is just water” level, but at the very low end of the acceptable range, even when water has been withheld. conversely, his kidney values on blood work are at the high end of normal, and compared to previous tests have been slowly increasing over time. appetite hasn’t been great lately. he’s also showing progressive neurological deficits in his hind legs/lumbar area
so right now the potential problems are:
UTI: would be the easiest solution, but is unlikely to be the case. will know for certain next week once the culture is finished.
early kidney disease: more likely given the urine dilution and increasing blood values. not curable, but can be managed with a rx diet (expensive, but he doesn’t like his current food anyway so not a huge hardship).
nerve damage: possible due to his long history of neuro problems and current degradation in his hind legs. only definitively diagnosable via MRI which is a big hassle and very expensive. the treatment for that would likely be steroids which have the unfortunate side effect of making you pee fucking everywhere, which is the same problem we’re trying to fix in the first place.
so assuming the culture comes back clear, which seems likely, it’s down to either kidneys or neuro (or possibly both). im trying to take things one step at a time and not get too overwhelmed, which I’m having varying levels of success with. I put him in a belly band last night and woke up early to take him out which did at least save my house from getting covered in pee, so hopefully we get some answers soon and can trial some things to get him feeling better.
#trial and error my beloathed#anyway boone seems to otherwise be acting normal so I’m trying not to stress#fingers crossed we can get a solution and get the Endless PeePee under control

life and whatnot
It's not very good but I wanted to say I'm managing. Barely. Thank you for your comments on my last post about Isis. I appreciate them more than I can say. And a huge thank you to @thoseveganelves for a beautiful drawing of her that is my lock screen on my phone <3 thank you again. I'm having problems with Lilly now. I truly hope she'll be ok and they're more behavioral than something actually wrong but there are a few concerning things. Moreover, me and my mom's relationship is shit. She did something yesterday involving Lilly and I'm not sure I can forgive her. Or anything that's happened since the lumbar puncture I wish I never did. It was supposed to be an easy procedure to get a diagnosis and treatment but it ruined my life to such a terrible degree lol wild. I'm exhausted. My head gets pretty severe and then I'll have a break. Enough now that I have been able to watch some shows for the first time in years! They have to be easy and relatively calm shows with not much action or fast camera movement but the fact that I can while my head is in a respite is pretty great. I was working on art like crazy too but shit happened and my creative bug disappeared for a while. I'm writing in another fandom and started up more recently again after a short break. It sucks not to be creative b/c arting/writing is still about all I can do. I do miss bagginshield quite a lot right now. My neurologist is still an asshole. I cry every time I have to interact with him in some way and when I tried to switch within the same group, they wouldn't allow it. They had to talk to him about it so now he knows I'm trying to escape him lmao but thankfully the next time I see neuro is with his PA and I'll get a break from him. It's insane how they can do this to patients and not give a fuck. I lied out my teeth tho when I was trying to switch and said he did right by me, with absolutely no problems (totally didn't leave me in excruciating pain for five entire months). Oh well! My mom and I are supposed to start family therapy soon but they're not calling me back which is strange. My therapist is trying to get them to move on it. It was pulling teeth to get my mom to agree and took a massive fight for that to happen. She used to be my number one. Now I can't trust her with me or my fucking cat. My entire body tenses so badly when she is here. I love my mom with all my heart but I do not like who she has become. I'm so tired. MH is in the tank. I miss Isis severely. She was my soul cat and what happened to her was awful. But her spirit is here. I was never a spiritual person before but too many things are happening that are distinctly Isis™ so I know she's here. Beyond what may be a medical issue, Lilly has blossomed into a different cat, most of it good, but she has seemed very unsettled at times and it hasn't calmed down much since mid-May. Keeping an eye on her. Her vet gave us a prescription for gabapentin and it fucked Isis up so much that I'm nervous about it. But Isis was weird like me and cats usually respond well to it. I hate to make Lilly sedated in any way too but she may have some tooth pain rn and it'd help that. I have pretty bad nerve pain in my face and gaba is a lifesaver for me. Anyway this is rambling like usual. I'm tired and I'm unwell and just want to be well enough to be by myself with my cat again. I have a long road ahead of me to get there. Thanks for listening. 💜 Love you all very much. I am thankful you're here and I'm sending as much warmth as I can. You are all amazing people. Thank you.

hi! um. i have a kinda awkward question
so my friends are always making this joke about me being neurodivergent but i'm starting to wonder if i might actually have it? um. rephrase.
so i stim a lot and have some trouble sleeping if i'm not exhausted. and i always thought it was recent and bc of depression but
i've always walked on tiptoe for as long as i can remember and i remember as a kid my grandma would get annoyed at me for: perching on my chair instead of sitting normally / and wringing my hands as a nervous habit (she told me i looked like an old maid, repeatedly) / and being so restless that when we sat down to eat the table would vibrate / when we sat down on bleachers to watch my cousins play sports the bleachers would vibrate.
but i don't think i have adhd, 'cause i do well academically and love reading books, and i don't think i have autism, because i have no sensory issues or communication troubles. maybe i'm just making something out of nothing? sorry, i'd just like your two cents, thank you!
Hi there,
I toe walk while stimming (usually on my tiptoes and spinning counterclockwise). And tie walking does have a relationship with autism. According to the Autism Research Institute:
Idiopathic toe walking (toe walking that persists without a diagnosed neuro-motor or physical dysfunction) is most frequent in children with neuropsychiatric and communication and learning conditions (Sala et al., 1999; Engström and Tedroff, 2018). Studies on the prevalence of idiopathic toe walking did not differentiate between ASD and other neuropsychiatric conditions until recently. However, in 2019 a large-scale review of trends and treatment patterns found that 9% of children with ASD are diagnosed with persistent/idiopathic toe walking compared to less than 0.5% of children without an autism diagnosis (Leyden et al., 2019).
Causes for this increased prevalence of toe walking in individuals on the spectrum are varied and unclear. In some cases, it results from tight heel cords that restrict the range of movement in the ankle (Barrow et al., 2011). Toe walking can also be caused by a dysregulated vestibular or sensory system involving touch, proprioception, and vision. More research is needed to fully understand which tactile/sensory processing differences may cause idiopathic toe walking in children with ASD.
The full article will be linked below if you’d like to read it.
I found something else from the Autism Research Institute:
A dysfunctional vestibular system, a common problem in autism, may be responsible for toe walking. The vestibular system provides the brain with feedback regarding body motion and position. It may be possible to reduce or eliminate toe walking by providing the person with therapeutic vestibular stimulation (e.g., being swung on a glider swing).
Toe walking may be directly or indirectly related to a visual-vestibular problem. I have conducted several research studies with Melvin Kaplan, O.D. at the Center for Visual Management in Tarrytown, New York. While performing these studies, I observed four individuals who were toe walkers. In each case, their toe walking was eliminated within seconds after the child began wearing prism lenses.
The article goes over prism lenses in more detail. I’ll also link to below so you can read it.
I hope these sources help. Thank you for the inbox. I hope you have a wonderful day/night. ❤️

I don't get it what's wrong with ride alongs? Shouldn't EMTs be happy to have a doctor on board?
Yeah, it's a med student. Not a doctor. And the idea that paramedics should be happy when a doctor (actually a doctor or not) is in the back of the rig, is a part of the problem.
When we get an actual doctor on board, it's usually an Emergency Medicine (EM) Resident. And honestly, by and large, it's chill. They very much understand our jobs are different. They're there to get a sense of our protocols, so they can be of better help when/if they're on call in telemedicine assistance, as well as to learn some tricks for certain proceedures that overlap, or when supplies are limited
Med Student ride-alongs are very different and they usually fall into one of four categories.
The Unicorn: We love Unicorns. Go Unicorns 🦄! Probably not as rare as they seem to be, but there's a reason we call them unicorns. They want to be there. They want to learn. They know they're there to observe and see a side of the medical field that's outside their wheelhouse. Like an EM Resident, they understand that we don't do the same thing, but we have the same goal. So they sit back, watch and listen. They lend a hand with clean-up and other grunt work. We'll actually let these guys assist on basic things, like reading a 12 lead, or listening to lung sounds, bagging a patient, etc., by the end of their 12 hours because, you know what? They earned it. And they tend to keep a cool, level head. And best of all, Unicorns ask intelligent questions at the appropriate times. Which is the perfect segue to category two.
The Question Mark: Again, these med students genuinely want to be there and learn. Great! They come in armed with a notebook - also good - and the entirety of Gray's Anatomy (Not Grey's Anatomy, very important difference) memorized...less good. They don't know when to shut up. They treat everything like a professor is trying to trick them. You've heard of the medical phrase 'think horses, not zebras?' because they certainly haven't! If we get a patient who is sweating with abdominal cramps, they'll ask about botulism or the plague...in front of the patient. Or they'll talk about treatments like Pericardiocentesis - which isn't in our protocols -and is totally irrelevant because the patient does not have a cardiac tamponade, and they have a panic attack that you're really not helping with. Speaking of not helping time for category three.
The "I don't wanna's": They don't wanna be there. They don't wanna listen. They don't wanna help. They have all sorts of reasons for why they don't wanna, and you're gonna hear about them all. They pay more attention to their phones or laptops or textbooks than they do anything else. They don't wanna be there? Fine. I don't ever wanna be their patient. Good thing most of them insist they're going into medical technology or pathology (something they have in common with Question Marks).
The Doctor-Gods: You know the type. They have eyes on being a surgeon. Probably Neuro or Cardio. We know nothing; they know everything. Even when they're wrong, they're right; they were just testing us. They believe medics only became medics because they weren't smart enough to get into medical school like them, and we should be thrilled by their presence in the back of the ambo. They're just a wealth of all knowledge and treatment, don't you know. DO NOT let them talk to patients. Will throw up in the back of the ambulance, all over their ridiculously shiny dress shoes; so tragic that we didn't get the sick bag to them in time.

luke illness hc anon here from a while back hfjsjd-
first of all, YAY FOR MORE DEPICTIONS OF LUKE'S ILLNESS!!! secondly, ngl when he started losing his strength on his right arm i most definately went "CALLED IT!!!" but as a luke pearce stan i want to Cry.
// spoilers for tot main story 9
i assume these are two different anons, but i'll answer them both in one go since theyre talking about the same main topic and referencing the same past post!!
@ anon 1: oooooOOHH WAIT R U THE ANON who asked me this question months back for headcanon's on luke's illness? if yes, hi again! and RIGHT RIGHT YESSSS MORE INFORMATION AND ESCALATING SYMPTOMS AND U TOTES CALLED IT. i love it, it's a double edged sword of enjoyment cuz on one hand im so satisfied seeing a progression of his illness finally after it being in limbo for the longest time but...
on the other hand....
.....yeah i wanna cry too KJVAJFHVSKFAKFS
the arm thing was such a nice detail. nerve damage does a Lot and it was very satisfying to see it escalate from pain episodes (i.e. nerves firing the wrong kinda signals) to an entire limb's momentary loss of sensation/motor skills (i.e. nerves just....NOT firing signals at all for a moment)
i mentioned in that previous linked ask that ive also got a neuro condition (not severe just annoying), so more symptoms i'd like to see (or if it doesnt happen in canon, fun for fanfic to play around with) from luke's illness progression would be the following: involuntary movement (i.e. nerves firing the wrong kinda signals but in the motor skills department), nerve issues in other extremities (ive had involuntary movement issues hit one of my legs while sitting and i just spasm'd outta my seat), and nerve problems exacerbated by stress (also common for me, the more freaked i am the more common a bunch of these get....sORRY I REALIZE IM JUST OFFLOADING ALL MY OWN SYMPTOMS ONTO LUKE AHAHAHAA), and troubles with finer motor skills (use of fingers, hands, wrists. luke handles weapons often....whatd happen if his grip strength went awry when hes holding a knife? a gun? many thoughts)
the nervous system is weird and complicated. seeing this new neurodegenerative symptom from luke feels very much like the beginning of more to come. also, luke needs a hug. he needs so many hugs. and more medical treatment thats not just "the strong pill [painkiller]" that luke called aaron for in that one scene, LUKE PLEASE JHDVJFHSD. OTL
@ anon 2: IT'S SO NOT A BAD THING AT ALL IM ALSO RLLY GLAD TO SEE THIS, as i write in the first portion of this response. like, it's not that we Want to see luke in pain and fearing his illness getting worse and worse, it's that the illness has been here since the beginning and it is beyond satisfying to see it no longer be something static, for it to change and affect the story, affect luke's character and how he interacts with others.....
i also totally dont want him magically cured JHVDFJSDVFK like, with how much Worse it's gotten, his recovery has to take into account how hard the journey has been thus far, both narratively and medically. i uh. um. [VERY VERY VAGUE SPOILERS FOR CN SERVER AHEAD but] i saw a spoiler from future main story 12 that definitely shows that luke is not magically cured at that point and is getting worse
so, HELL YEAH, BIG WIN FOR PEOPLE WHO WANNA SEE THIS PROGRESS!! but also //loud sobbing
huge HUGE agree that luke's illness and chronic symptoms are nice to see from a representation perspective. when the arm thing happened while i was playing i was first like "OMG WE'RE TWINNING!!!" and then i was like "OH NO" jashfvKJHVKJHK
my hopes for luke's illness eventually becoming a have-to-longterm-manage-this-for-the-rest-of-his-life-but-it-wont-kill-him chronic condition is still very true. it's something i have a lot of feelings about
//holds luke gently....
