TIFF: And so it continues...5 to ZFF
Aaand "Russians at War" is going to be at the Zurich Flim Festival. Because of course.
The Russian Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova met a soldier on home leave in Moscow's subway, accompanying him to the front lines, where she spent over a year filming unauthorized footage in a battalion near the Ukrainian border. In her film, she gives voice to soldiers who have no understanding of the war's causes and soon find themselves mourning comrades who have become Putin's cannon fodder. This harrowing and unique war documentary captures images you would never see in the news media. 'Who are the Russian soldiers who are fighting against Ukraine? What do they think of Putin? The documentary has them speak their minds. A film that revealed more to me about this conflict than 100 newspaper articles.' – Christian Jungen Anastasia Trofimova Anastasia Trofimova was born in Moscow and is a Russian-Canadian filmmaker. She first studied communications and political science and then international relations. Trofimova is a renowned filmmaker who has made a name for herself through her work in conflict zones such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Russia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In her films, she addresses social inequality and injustice. She has been honoured with the Canada Screen Award and has participated as a jury member at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards five times. RUSSIANS AT WAR (2024) / CONGO, MY PRECIOUS (2017) / VICTIMS OF ISIS (2015) / HER WAR: WOMEN VS. ISIS (2015)
No mention of RT in the director's bio of course. Same shit, different film festival.
Also, if this propaganda film reveals more to you about the war than 100 news articles, that's not shining praise for the film, but rather an indictment of the sorry state of our collective media landscape in Ukraine and the West.
The West obviously has a problem of not reporting on Ukraine as often anymore. It's not "fashionable". A lot of the reporting I've come across is superficial and there is rarely a deep dive into the Ukrainian civilian aspect of the war. It seems there always has to be either a grotesque catastrophic event due to Russian aggression (like the Okhmatdyt children's cancer hospital), or an interesting enough topic in order for something to be considered (like the Mykola Hryshko national botanical garden being in danger of losing its tropical plants due to the war causing electricity cuts.) There is a dearth of human interest stories, which is the core of understanding this war and the effects it has on Ukrainians.
When there is such a story, it falls into the situation of the "box-ticking approach", as described by Dr. Olesya Khromeychuk:
It is not enough to simply ‘do Ukraine’ by reviewing one book on the war, especially if it’s by a Western journalist rather than a Ukraine-based author. It’s not enough to host one exhibition, particularly if it is by an artist or photographer who only spent a few weeks in the country. Quickly putting together a panel on Russia’s war in response to a major development at the front and adding a sole Ukrainian voice at the last minute doesn’t cut it either. This box-ticking approach is unhelpful and insulting.
Most if not all of the quotes I pull from human-interest stories are from Ukrainian journalism. If you've been following me for the short time I've had this blog up, you'll notice I read a lot. At this point I've given up on looking up Western based English media, because the core stories that define the war are just not there. If there is an interesting article from the West, I'll usually see it pop up on my Twitter feed (like the botanical garden story) and I'll take a look then because its been recommended and has what I'm looking for.
And finally, Western media can't let go of having some Russian expert talk about Ukraine, instead of actually talking to Ukrainians.
Kate from Kharkiv: Ukrainian media, both in Ukrainian and English, must improve their regional reporting. They are increasingly resembling local Kyiv media, which limits global awareness of events across Ukraine. Consequently, international media rarely cover these regions unless we die en mass. But not too often, because if often it is not news anymore.
Like Kate from Kharkiv points out, mass-casualty events are no longer "fashionable". She further indicates the lack of essential reporting in specific regions where conditions are different from Kyiv. One such example is the Russians turning Kherson into a "human safari". Initially, only Zarina Zabrisky was reporting on how Russian drones pilots were deliberately targeting civilians, and she shouldn't have to be the only one reporting on this. While there are some Western news outlets that have reported on this situation now, it's still not enough. Zarina Zabrisky is still diligently doing the bulk of the work in reporting on this. I can only imagine what other stories in other regions are going untold because there is little to no coverage.
The other obstacle I've noticed is accessibility to news in Ukraine from a language perspective. There isn't enough English language coverage from Ukrainian media outlets. While I would love to be able to read Ukrainian confidently, I'm nowhere near there yet, and the West is collectively even further away. Google translate isn't a great substitute either for obvious reasons. The number of times I wanted to read/watch a news report, and there was no English supplement is a lot. It happens frequently with the English language Ukrainian news accounts I follow. They'll post a clip from a news report with no translated subtitles and say, "look at this!", but I can't extract the information they want to show because of this problem.
This is why I hold volunteer translators as some of the most valuable contributors in the information space, and I will always credit them.
It's a vicious cycle. If a large proportion of Ukrainian news media is inaccessible to Western media due to the language barrier, information has even less of a chance of being noticed and spreading. This is, in my opinion, the other side of the coin on issues in the information war.

Love you, Jade ❤️ And though I know it's not the most important thing right now, speaking out and often is more important, I do hope you are okay ❤️
hiii oh my god has it forreal been weeks since you sent me this?? i swear i just saved this to my drafts three days ago .. the passage of time truly fries my brain
first, this is so sweet of you to send to me and i'm so grateful that people still check in on me when i'm quiet online <3 i know i am a veryyyyy unreliable presence here but i really do appreciate all the love and i'm sending it right back to you <3
you've kind of given me the perfect jumping off point to just throw a lot of updates and ramblings in one spot bc truthfully i do not feel right posting normal posts and taking up space with things that are trivial in the grand scheme of things. i genuinely don't have the brain capacity for much else these days besides keeping up with palestine/congo/sudan etc related updates + the occasional few hours where i can watch a movie or a show without feeling guilty
(general life update dump below so beware bc i talk a lot)
brief mental state check in but i am not doing well! not just with the weight of the world but with everything else in my life lmao. pretty much everyone who knows me knows that the holidays/the winter are the roughest months for me so i'm usually radio silent :/ this year has been... so rough and i don't know why every year feels worse than the last but it really truly does! i'm particularly lonelier this year and it's honestly my fault. idk how to reach out to people when i'm so isolated tbh i feel like a burden at all times especially now that most of the people i used to talk to daily online and irl are doing way better than me and i'm just. always stuck here in this really shitty space i can't seem to get out of no matter how hard i try
i don't talk about my problems a lot online but like. after losing my childhood pet and then getting accepted to two different programs in one year (grad school and community college) and having to drop out of both AND dealing with a decline in my mother's health AND my grandmother's cancer scare AND my own financial issues AND unemployment i'm just exhausted. because of all of this i truly don't know how to function like a normal person or make friends or keep friends anymore i'm just miserable tbh
okay i know this is a hard pivot, but i thought i could just compile things that have brought me a little bit of happiness that i haven't talked about here! it's all on me to feel like this, but i have intense guilt about posting anything not related to current events, so this is my way around that! so.. enjoy i guess <3
personal stuff (you can send me asks to explain more if you want)
i beat my new years' resolution of watching 365 things this year – i'm up to 500 logs!
a lot of new tv (28 total, entire shows, rewatches, new seasons, miniseries, and documentaries included)
fixated on kpop this year and listened to 30 groups whole discography! i actually counted and it was exactly 30 lmao ask me ab my fav groups and biases if you dare
started drinking tea every day :)
redecorating my apartment and it's so much cozier now
i've become more of a snoopy/peanuts fanatic :)
to build on the new years resolution, i've added quite a few horror franchises under my belt :) my horror tag on letterboxd is roughly 250 now!
i think i'm finally breaking my lifelong nail biting habit??? fingers crossed!
buying more things secondhand and feeling way better about it! mostly clothes and dvds but me and my partner are huge fans of knick knacks
have tried a lot of new food this year :) and am cooking new recipes a lot more too!
went to the beach for vacation for the first time in ten years <3 went to this cool little record store and got a band recommendation from the owner that's now one of my underground favs!
celebrated ten years with my partner this year and although it's been such a rough year for the both of us and we're not nearly where we ever thought we'd be, we're more solid now than we've ever been!!! i really would not have made it through this year without them
honestly this year has been a blur 90% of the time so there's obviously been more little things that make me happy but! it's been a big year for consuming media bc i don't have much energy for creating anymore unfortunately

This is all great news, not just for the industry but also for anyone who acknowledges the need to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy for the sake of our planet’s future. But there’s a massive caveat that I hardly see anyone talking about.
One of the key materials in a solar panel is very high purity silica. This is in the form of a sand, substrate or quartz that needs to be refined just like oil needs to be refined.
to produce very high purity requires lots of energy and high purity water among other chemicals (acid, boron, etc). But unlike oil the bi-products are highly poisonous and cancer causing. Cadmium, lead, arsenic are just a few. You can walk all day on sand and it won’t bother you but separate the silica you have a real hazard left. These biproducts are generally stored in open lined vats so there is no leaching into the ground systems. They don’t go away.
There are other components in a solar panel beside the glass wafers. All of this take energy to make unfortunately after it is all added up including the supply and distribution they are new energy negative.
Then there is the handling issue when they reach end of life. Some states consider them a hazard. Much like a mercury filled light bulb and require special handling.
I do not like fossil fuels either but substituting it for a worse technology that is economically not that viable does not make sense either.
Wind and solar energy do not generate much electricity, but they have a great power to cloud people’s minds. It is now fairly well known that wind and solar can pose serious threats to the nation’s wildlife — from endangered right whales to tens of thousands of bird deaths each year from solar. But optimistic green energy advocates still don’t realize the many environmental impacts associated with manufacturing, maintaining, and disposing of solar panels and wind turbines.
It takes a great deal of material to produce solar panels and wind turbines. Wind and solar energy technologies collect diffuse and intermittent gusts of wind and rays of sunlight to generate electricity, which means they have a very low energy density in comparison to other generation technologies, like fossil fuels or nuclear.
Because of the diffuse nature of their fuel sources, renewables consume orders of magnitude more materials for the same electricity output, thereby causing greater environmental burdens than do more dense energy sources.
Economic and environmental damages aren’t the only problems with wind and solar power. There’s also the problem of moral cleanliness.
Around half of the world’s polysilicon, a key ingredient in solar cells, is made in Xinjiang, China, where Uyghur Muslims are enslaved to produce it.
The majority of the world’s cobalt (over 70% in 2021) is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cobalt is essential to manufacture the batteries that will be needed to provide backup for wind and solar and to power electric vehicles.
“As of 2022, there is no such thing as a clean supply chain of cobalt from the Congo. All cobalt sourced from the DRC is tainted by various degrees of abuse, including slavery, child labor, forced labor, debt bondage, human trafficking, hazardous and toxic working conditions, pathetic wages, injury and death, and incalculable environmental harm,” - Siddharth Kara
I don’t know about you, but I prefer my energy, metals and minerals to be produced by well-paid miners under strict labor and environmental regulations rather than extracted under compulsion by poverty-stricken Congolese children or enslaved Uyghurs.
And as to the "we can just put them in the desert cause nothing important is there anyway" is infuriatingly untrue. Our deserts are vast ecological niches.
Also to reply to the comment made about China's solar energy - recent data reported by nonprofit Environmental Progress show that because China powers its solar industry with coal, it’s quite likely that solar ends up more carbon intensive than carbon-capture-aided natural gas.
"It is 70 years since AT&T’s Bell Labs unveiled a new technology for turning sunlight into power. The phone company hoped it could replace the batteries that run equipment in out-of-the-way places. It also realised that powering devices with light alone showed how science could make the future seem wonderful; hence a press event at which sunshine kept a toy Ferris wheel spinning round and round.
Today solar power is long past the toy phase. Panels now occupy an area around half that of Wales, and this year they will provide the world with about 6% of its electricity—which is almost three times as much electrical energy as America consumed back in 1954. Yet this historic growth is only the second-most-remarkable thing about the rise of solar power. The most remarkable is that it is nowhere near over.
To call solar power’s rise exponential is not hyperbole, but a statement of fact. Installed solar capacity doubles roughly every three years, and so grows ten-fold each decade. Such sustained growth is seldom seen in anything that matters. That makes it hard for people to get their heads round what is going on. When it was a tenth of its current size ten years ago, solar power was still seen as marginal even by experts who knew how fast it had grown. The next ten-fold increase will be equivalent to multiplying the world’s entire fleet of nuclear reactors by eight in less than the time it typically takes to build just a single one of them.
Solar cells will in all likelihood be the single biggest source of electrical power on the planet by the mid 2030s. By the 2040s they may be the largest source not just of electricity but of all energy. On current trends, the all-in cost of the electricity they produce promises to be less than half as expensive as the cheapest available today. This will not stop climate change, but could slow it a lot faster. Much of the world—including Africa, where 600m people still cannot light their homes—will begin to feel energy-rich. That feeling will be a new and transformational one for humankind.
To grasp that this is not some environmentalist fever dream, consider solar economics. As the cumulative production of a manufactured good increases, costs go down. As costs go down, demand goes up. As demand goes up, production increases—and costs go down further. This cannot go on for ever; production, demand or both always become constrained. In earlier energy transitions—from wood to coal, coal to oil or oil to gas—the efficiency of extraction grew, but it was eventually offset by the cost of finding ever more fuel.
As our essay this week explains, solar power faces no such constraint. The resources needed to produce solar cells and plant them on solar farms are silicon-rich sand, sunny places and human ingenuity, all three of which are abundant. Making cells also takes energy, but solar power is fast making that abundant, too. As for demand, it is both huge and elastic—if you make electricity cheaper, people will find uses for it. The result is that, in contrast to earlier energy sources, solar power has routinely become cheaper and will continue to do so.
Other constraints do exist. Given people’s proclivity for living outside daylight hours, solar power needs to be complemented with storage and supplemented by other technologies. Heavy industry and aviation and freight have been hard to electrify. Fortunately, these problems may be solved as batteries and fuels created by electrolysis gradually become cheaper...
The aim should be for the virtuous circle of solar-power production to turn as fast as possible. That is because it offers the prize of cheaper energy. The benefits start with a boost to productivity. Anything that people use energy for today will cost less—and that includes pretty much everything. Then come the things cheap energy will make possible. People who could never afford to will start lighting their houses or driving a car. Cheap energy can purify water, and even desalinate it. It can drive the hungry machinery of artificial intelligence. It can make billions of homes and offices more bearable in summers that will, for decades to come, be getting hotter.
But it is the things that nobody has yet thought of that will be most consequential. In its radical abundance, cheaper energy will free the imagination, setting tiny Ferris wheels of the mind spinning with excitement and new possibilities.
This week marks the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. The Sun rising to its highest point in the sky will in decades to come shine down on a world where nobody need go without the blessings of electricity and where the access to energy invigorates all those it touches."

What Are The Different Types Of Urological Surgery?
Urology procedures are the procedures used to treat issues related to the urinary tract. These are problems common to both males and females. A Urologist treats ailments and conditions in the kidneys, urinary bladder, and urinary tract. There are many causes of these problems like diabetes, weak bladder muscles, childbirth, certain diseases, or severe constipation. Sometimes you may get rid of these by shifting towards a healthy lifestyle or surgical procedures are a must to treat these. Here we will discuss a few of the urological surgeries.
Laparoscopic surgery
This surgical procedure used fibre-optic instruments to inspect or operate on the organs inside the abdomen or the pelvic cavities. In this technique, small incisions are made during the procedure and lead to minimally invasive surgery to treat a wide range of conditions.
Robotic surgery
In this procedure, small tools attached to a robotic system are used to perform the procedure. Instead of using their own hands, the surgeon controls robotic arms through the computer to perform the procedure. It helps to reduce the risk of complications in many surgeries.
Prostatectomy
Prostatectomy is used to perform a number of procedures to remove either part or all of the prostate gland to treat prostate cancer or other conditions related to the prostate gland. The procedure can be open, laparoscopic, or robotically.
Nephrectomy
It is used to remove either part or whole of the kidney. Generally performed to treat cancer and other kidney diseases, to remove a damaged organ, or to remove a healthy kidney for transplantation.
Cystectomy
It is used to remove either part or whole of the bladder mainly to treat bladder cancer. It is also used to treat injuries related to the bladder, neurological conditions affecting the urinary system, and birth defects affecting the urinary system. This too can be performed open, laparoscopic, or robotically.
Adrenalectomy
This surgical procedure is used to remove either one or both the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing certain hormones. It is mainly used to treat benign or cancerous tumours in the adrenal gland or excessive hormonal secretion that may lead to harm to the body. This too can be performed open, or laparoscopically.
Vasectomy
It is performed to cut and block the vas deferens. It is a procedure for permanent contraception in men.
Ureteroscopy
This surgical procedure is used to inspect and treat issues inside the kidneys and urinary tract, with the help of a ureteroscope, a small and flexible instrument. It is used to treat kidney stones or ureteric stones. It is used to inspect and treat cysts, tumours, bladder issues, or problems with the kidney lining. It can also be used to inspect and treat cysts, tumours, or abnormal tissue in the bladder, ureter, or on the lining of the kidney.
If you are in need of an expert urology doctor called a Urologist or Urological Surgeons for consultation or advice you can approach the Harish Jagtani Hospital, Congo. The hospital has a fully equipped Urology Department to provide consultation, diagnosis, and treatment of the related problems with the help of the latest equipment. You may also visit the website to book an appointment.

Full Health Checkup Package In Kinshasa - Mr. Harish Jagtani
A full health checkup is essential for all as it would help you to get aware of your health and would guide you to take necessary steps to prevent or detect many health-related issues. Sometimes, people think that it is not necessary and is a waste of money but it is a wrong perspective. You should be vigilant to remain healthy and fit. So these comprehensive health checkups are very important.
What is a full health checkup?
A full health checkup means a complete body checkup or diagnostic scanning of your complete body including all major organs like the heart, kidney, liver, and lungs. It is meant to assess the present health and to know if there is any sign of warning or any medical issue or abnormal symptoms.
Importance of full health checkup
The set of investigations would help you to detect cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes, High blood pressure, digestive issues, etc. It is highly recommended that everyone should go for a full health checkup, especially after the age of 35 years. It would always make you aware of your unhealthy eating habits and the team would advise you to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle for a healthy life. Let us discuss some of the major benefits of undergoing a full health checkup.
First and foremost is that it would screen your full body to detect any underlying medical issues. It would diagnose critical and fatal diseases like cancer, and early detection is the key to achieving desired results of the treatment plan and it would save a patient's life. If any person is having a family history of some illness, he or she must go for a full health checkup to waive the possibility of that with him or her. Similarly, the one who has an unhealthy and hectic lifestyle should go for it to get all tests done to be on the safer side.
Presently, the world is running at a very fast pace, and so is the life of all people. No one has time to stay healthy by following a routine, having regular exercises, and pursuing yoga and meditation, all these add up to an unhealthy lifestyle and lead to sudden stress-induced issues like heart disease, depression, headache, etc. Therefore, it is advised to get your full body health checkup at regular intervals to prevent and detect the onset of any medical problem. Moreover, increasing pollution also leads to many health problems, and we can sort all of these with proper solutions if detected on time. To summarise, a full health checkup is the best solution to monitor your health and to find a solution for any problem in its initial stages.

First Arctic Navigation in February (Bloomberg) A tanker sailed through Arctic sea ice in February for the first time, the latest sign of how quickly the pace of climate change is accelerating in the Earth’s northernmost regions. The Christophe de Margerie was accompanied by the nuclear-powered 50 Let Pobedy icebreaker as it sailed back to Russia this month after carrying liquified natural gas to China through the Northern Sea Route in January. Both trips broke navigation records. The experimental voyage happened after a year of extraordinarily warm conditions in the Arctic that have sent shockwaves across the world, from the snowstorm that blanketed Spain in January to the blast of cold air that swept through Canada in mid-February, moving deep into the South as far as Texas. The Arctic is warming more than twice as quickly as the rest of the world and the area covered by ice there has reached historic lows multiple times over the past 12 months. The melting in the region is already in line with the worst-case climate scenarios outlined by scientists.
Biden mourns 500,000 dead, balancing nation’s grief and hope (AP) With sunset remarks and a national moment of silence, President Joe Biden on Monday confronted head-on the country’s once-unimaginable loss—half a million Americans in the COVID-19 pandemic—as he tried to strike a balance between mourning and hope. “We often hear people described as ordinary Americans. There’s no such thing,” he said Monday evening. “There’s nothing ordinary about them. The people we lost were extraordinary.” The president, who lost his first wife and baby daughter in a car collision and later an adult son to brain cancer, leavened the grief with a message of hope. “This nation will smile again. This nation will know sunny days again. This nation will know joy again. And as we do, we’ll remember each person we’ve lost, the lives they lived, the loved ones they left behind.” He said, “We have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow. We have to resist viewing each life as a statistic or a blur or, on the news. We must do so to honor the dead. But, equally important, to care for the living.”
Texans Needed Food and Comfort After a Brutal Storm. As Usual, They Found It at H-E-B. (NYT) The past week had been a nightmare. A winter storm, one of the worst to hit Texas in a generation, robbed Lanita Generous of power, heat and water in her home. The food she had stored in her refrigerator and freezer had spoiled. She was down to her final five bottles of water. But on Sunday, as the sun shined and ice thawed in Austin, Ms. Generous did the same thing as many Texans in urgent need of food, water and a sense of normalcy: She went to H-E-B. “They’ve been great,” she said, adding with just a touch of hyperbole: “If it hadn’t been for the bread and peanut butter, I would have died in my apartment.” H-E-B is a grocery store chain. But it is also more than that. People buy T-shirts that say “H-E-B for President,” and they post videos to TikTok declaring their love, like the woman clutching a small bouquet of flowers handed to her by an employee: “I wish I had a boyfriend like H-E-B. Always there. Gives me flowers. Feeds me.” For many Texans, H-E-B reflected the ways the state’s maverick spirit can flourish: reliable for routine visits but particularly in a time of disaster, and a belief that the family-owned chain—with a vast majority of its more than 340 locations inside state lines—has made a conscious choice to stay rooted to the idea of being a good neighbor. “It’s like H-E-B is the moral center of Texas,” said Stephen Harrigan, a novelist and journalist who lives in Austin. “There seems to be in our state a lack of real leadership, a lack of real efficiency, on the political level. But on the business level, when it comes to a grocery store, all of those things are in place.”
Hunger in Central America skyrockets, U.N. agency says (Reuters) The number of people going hungry in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua has nearly quadrupled in the last two years, the United Nations said on Tuesday, as Central America has been battered by an economic crisis. New data released by the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) showed nearly 8 million people across the four countries are experiencing hunger this year, up from 2.2 million in 2018. “The COVID-19-induced economic crisis had already put food on the market shelves out of reach for the most vulnerable people when the twin hurricanes Eta and Iota battered them further,” Miguel Barreto, WFP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said in a statement.
Prison riots in Ecuador leave 62 dead (AP) Sixty-two inmates have died in riots at prisons in three cities in Ecuador as a result of fights between rival gangs and an escape attempt, authorities said Tuesday. Prisons Director Edmundo Moncayo said in a news conference that 800 police offices have been helping to regain control of the facilities. Hundreds of officers from tactical units had been deployed since the clashes broke out late Monday. Moncayo said that two groups were trying to gain “criminal leadership within the detention centers” and that the clashes were precipitated by a search for weapons carried out Monday by police officers.
Mount Etna eruption lights up Sicily's night sky (BBC) Mount Etna is erupting again, and its hot lava fountains are illuminating the Sicilian sky. The eruption began earlier this week, and Etna has since been spewing massive orange plumes of smoke and thick clouds of ash. Etna is Europe's most active volcano, and it erupts relatively often. The last major eruption was in 1992. Its eruptions have rarely caused damage or injury in recent decades - and officials believe this eruption is no exception. Stefano Branco, the head of the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in the nearby city of Catania, told Italian news agency AGI earlier this week: "We've seen worse."
Cow science (Foreign Policy) A new national exam on cows developed by the Indian government-backed National Cow Commission has been shelved following controversy over its less-than-scientific contents. The curriculum for the test involved erroneous claims about the virtues of Indian cows that were widely ridiculed by the country’s scientific community. Among the “facts” on display: That Indian cows have a special “solar pulse” in their humps which can supposedly convert sun rays into vitamin D that is then passed on to milk, and an assertion that Indian cows are “strong” whereas foreign cows are “lazy.” The issue of cows, considered sacred by Hindus, and their treatment has become even more of a cultural wedge issue in India following the rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, with sometimes deadly results. Attacks by vigilante “cow protection” groups killed 44 people between 2015 and 2018 according to Human Rights Watch, with Muslims among the majority of those targeted.
Japan creates Minister of Loneliness to fight COVID-19 suicides (New York Post) Japan just appointed a Minister of Loneliness—to try to combat its exploding suicide rate amid COVID-19. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga named Tetsushi Sakamoto, a cabinet member already trying to beef up the depressed country’s birthrate, to the post. Suga noted earlier this month that Japanese women, in particular, have been struggling with depression since the coronavirus pandemic began about a year ago—with nearly 880 female suicide victims in the country alone in October, a 70 percent increase over the year before, the BBC reported. Japanese suicide expert Michiko Ueda told the BBC that part of the problem involves an increasing number of single women in the country who don’t have stable employment. “A lot of women are not married anymore,” she said. “They have to support their own lives, and they don’t have permanent jobs.”
Facebook Strikes Deal to Restore News Sharing in Australia (NYT) Facebook said on Monday that it would restore the sharing and viewing of news links in Australia after gaining more time to negotiate over a proposed law that would require it to pay for news content that appears on its site. The social network had blocked news links in Australia last week as the new law neared passage. The legislation includes a code of conduct that would allow media companies to bargain individually or collectively with digital platforms over the value of their news content. Facebook had vigorously objected to the code, which would curb its power and drive up its spending for content, as well as setting a precedent for other governments to follow. The company had argued that news would not be worth the hassle in Australia if the bill became law. But on Monday, Facebook returned to the negotiating table after the Australian government granted a few minor concessions.
U.S.-Saudi ties (Foreign Policy) The families of the three U.S. service members killed and 13 others injured by Mohammed Alshamrani, a Saudi airman who went on a shooting spree at Naval Air Station Pensacola in 2019, are suing Saudi Arabia’s government, alleging that the kingdom failed to screen him appropriately before sending him to the United States for training. The families are filing the lawsuit against Saudi Arabia based on a 2016 law that allows U.S. citizens to sue foreign governments over terrorist attacks—legislation that was initially passed in order to allow the families of 9/11 victims to bring a civil suit against Saudi Arabia.
Italian Ambassador Among Three Killed in Attack on U.N. Convoy in Congo (NYT) For Luca Attanasio, Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, humanitarian work was at the core of his mission. The 43-year-old had moved with his wife to the capital, Kinshasa, in 2017, where their family grew to include three young daughters. He rose to the rank of ambassador in 2019, the pinnacle of his diplomatic career. On Monday, Mr. Attanasio was among three people killed in an attack on a humanitarian convoy near the city of Goma, the World Food Program and Italy’s Foreign Ministry said, the latest in a wave of violence in that part of the central African nation. The deaths of Mr. Attanasio; an Italian Embassy official, named by the Foreign Ministry as Vittorio Iacovacci; and Mustapha Milambo, a driver for the World Food Program, have rattled the international diplomatic community and drawn condemnation from across the globe.
Flood damage and insurance (NPR) Right now, over 4 million houses and small apartments in the contiguous United States are at substantial risk of expensive flood damage, and the cost of flood damage to homes will increase by 50 percent over the next 30 years according to the First Street Foundation. As the climate changes, places that were perfectly safe to live in will no longer be as sure of bets as they once were, and the costs are about to be a serious reality check. The National Flood Insurance Program is $36 billion in debt because of underestimated risks. Over the next several years, FEMA plans to raise rates up to 18 percent a year until prices are accurate, starting this October.

Golf Sphere Netting.
As a local business owner, the last thing you intend to do is put your customers or staff in danger. Nov 17 (Reuters) - A UNITED STATE judge has actually disregarded a claim looking for to need the 30 Major League Baseball teams to prolong netting at stadiums farther down the very first- and third-base lines to protect fans from injuries brought on by busted bats and foul rounds. The following netting panels are in stock and ship within one business day, we provide small sections of nylon netting without any boundary ropes in addition to PolyPro netting panels in both Golf as well as Baseball dimensions that have rope approach sides. This was essential to make note-off, since, we do not have many accounts of our background from our perspective that abound in the Viral soup, as well as in many publications. The several publications covered us by immigrants, are just that: Hour background as told by immigrants. In this case, as in the Hub above, this is our tale and also background as we see, and also have experienced it-as we Africans do-also, as Biko had explained above concerning the distinctions between Western thinking and our own indigenous method of seeing points, that, it is not a matter, as some have actually mentioned, people attempting to relieve or resolve background, only. Yes, it's just what I am expressly doing that, restoring our past to life to life in the Hub above. African Songs in South Africa. This dynamic is replicated in much of South African art as well as is reflected in exhibits, where the majority of the art can still be separated along discrimination lines, nearly as if looking at cultural diversity via a magnifying glass. Nebraska Medicine-Nebraska Medical Facility (Omaha). Nebraska Medicine, which is the key professional companion of College of Nebraska Medical Center, has more than 1,000 associated medical professionals, and also its specialists see clients from all 50 states and from 47 nations. U.S. News & World Report rated Nebraska Medicine, which includes 809 qualified beds at its 2 medical facilities, the No. 1 hospital in Nebraska for 2017-18. In 2017, Nebraska Medicine got the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Top Quality Leadership Award from Vizient. I would love to read centers regarding the Voortrekkers composed by you. I am aware of the fact that I recognize only one side of the story and I am truthfully thinking about the accounts of the Africans. Tenet Mutwa's publication, My People", is in reality my only offered recommendation - in addition to the journals that were written by my very own ancestors as well as the censored history that were fed to us by the Apartheids Division of Education. By the 1980s, protestors frequently arranged themselves right into soccer teams to dumbfound the regime. They can take a trip quickly across worldwide boundaries, and matches represented an useful resource of loan for below ground anti-apartheid organizations. Peter Alegi, a historian and also writer of African Soccerscapes, informed me that as early as 1944, the earnings from soccer suits was being handed over to the ANC. Patson Banda, a former player for the Orlando Pirates, keeps in mind one game that was played throughout the border in Zimbabwe in front of greater than 100,000 paying fans. Again, the ANC obtained the profits collected at eviction. St. Jude Children's Study Health center (Memphis, Tenn.). Families obtaining care at St. Jude Children's Research Health center never ever obtain a bill for treatment, travel or housing costs; treatment is instead moneyed largely through donations. Public contributions cover 75 percent of St. Jude's operating costs, which complete $2.4 million each day. The medical facility is just one of 69 National Cancer Cells Institute-designated Cancer Cells Centers in the United States, as well as UNITED STATE News & World Report ranked St. Jude as the No. 1 hospital in the country for pediatric specialty treatment in 2017-18. 1997mBafana Bafana receives the Globe Mug finals for the first time with a 1-0 victory over Congo in the beginning National Financial institution stadium. Manning Rangers crowned the initial PSL Oliphant becomes the 3rd head of state of SAFA since its, South African Football Athletes Union (SAFPU) wases established. I have a response that does this put-down on Africans on this Center. It is more so the reason I am blogging about the society of African people and also at the same time attempting very difficult to bring them around-to get on one page-as to the nature of these assaults, as well as exactly what this Hub performs in lessening the anxieties of the bad and inadequately informed individuals, that is, pushing back harder compared to they are striking, maybe the self-confidence as well as growth have to review on these problems as a collective for African individuals will materialize itself as well as come to be a way of living as well as seeing. We can not desire and wish that we ought to be approved by our opponents as just humans without our identity of being African always the first thing the opponent sees. golf practice nets can not wish for approval into a society of consuming, of mosting likely to their churches, of drinking their culture by just specifying that we do not see shade, neither acknowledge shade. This is an uphill struggle, however we are in it, on it and also at it. We have books that deal as well as explain our culture created as early as the 1800, where we can cull whatever we need for the 21 century, and make them match the objectives and also goals of our communitiesI have actually mentioned a few above. We are writing initial write-ups such as this set to gradually bring to the leading edge the value and also success of African societies in South Africa.
