Olafur Eliasson, Your Waste of Time, 2006
Overview
Olafur Eliasson’s Your Waste of Time was first exhibited in 2006 at neugerriemschneider, Berlin. The installation features large blocks of ice sourced from Iceland’s glaciers, which are placed in a refrigerated gallery. These glaciers are estimated to be around 800 years old, and the ice slowly melts over time, allowing viewers to see and feel the process of glacial decay firsthand. Eliasson’s work brings the distant realities of the Arctic and Antarctic into the exhibition space, making the issue of climate change tangible and immediate for the audience.Olafur Eliasson’s Your Waste of Time was first exhibited in 2006 at neugerriemschneider, Berlin. The installation features large blocks of ice sourced from Iceland’s glaciers, which are placed in a refrigerated gallery. These glaciers are estimated to be around 800 years old, and the ice slowly melts over time, allowing viewers to see and feel the process of glacial decay firsthand. Eliasson’s work brings the distant realities of the Arctic and Antarctic into the exhibition space, making the issue of climate change tangible and immediate for the audience.
Critical Analysis
In Your Waste of Time, Eliasson directly addresses the framework of environmental awareness by placing the melting ice in front of the viewers, allowing them to witness and feel the effects of climate change. This hands-on experience provides a more visceral understanding of environmental issues compared to traditional educational methods like photographs or scientific data. In China, there is a saying: "Seeing is believing," and Eliasson's work perfectly captures this idea. By presenting the ice in its raw form, the installation makes the phenomenon of glacier melt visible and palpable, which leaves a lasting impact on the audience.
One of the major themes in Eliasson’s work is the connection between physical experience and environmental education. Many people, myself included, have difficulty engaging with environmental problems because they feel too far removed from our daily lives. Before I began diving, I didn’t think much about environmental conservation. However, seeing marine life struggling in polluted waters made the problem real to me. Eliasson’s installation similarly brings an abstract, distant issue—glacial melting—into the viewers’ lives, encouraging a deeper connection to environmental issues through direct experience.
Eliasson’s work aligns with creative communities focused on environmental activism and art that fosters public engagement. His approach—using nature itself to engage viewers—has influenced my thinking about how to make my own curatorial practice more interactive and immersive. Your Waste of Time demonstrates how physical engagement can lower the barriers for understanding and increase the educational impact of art exhibitions. This work pushes me to reflect on how to better integrate natural elements and environmental themes into my exhibitions, creating opportunities for audiences to experience the urgency of environmental issues in real time.
By curating such powerful, interactive experiences, I aim to make environmental issues more accessible and personal, much like Eliasson does. His ability to create emotional connections with nature inspires me to consider how art can engage and educate in ways that traditional methods often fail to achieve.

Carlier Gebauer Gallery,
Meyer Riegger Gallery, Anna Hulačová,
Ján Mančuška’s,
Kuckei + Kuckei Gallery, Oliver van den Berg, 5

Michel Majerus DATA STREAMING November 11, 2022 – March 03, 2023 Kunstverein in Hamburg The exhibition DATA STREAMING shows a series of works from the later stage of Michel Majerus’ (1967–2002) œuvre in which the artist vigorously negotiates the coming of age of the digital within visual culture in the 1990s and early 2000s. In this body of work, Majerus suspends figurative and abstract elements of painting with digital printing technologies that were emerging at the time. DATA STREAMING is part of a series of exhibitions that will look at Majerus’ œuvre anew, taking place at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, the Michel Majerus Estate, and at neugerriemschneider for the 20th anniversary of Michel Majerus’ passing. In parallel, thirteen museums throughout Germany will show works by Michel Majerus from their collections. ______ Images: Michel Majerus, DATA STREAMING, Installation View, Kunstverein in Hamburg, 2022.

In his seminal 2003 site-installation "The Weather Project", Olafur Eliasson @studioolafureliasson conjured the sublime beauty of nature by creating the illusion of the sun setting inside Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. For his latest work, "LIFE" at the @fondationbeyeler in #Riehen, Switzerland, the Berlin-based Danish-Icelandic artist goes one step further by allowing nature to literally take over the museum’s interior. . . BILLY CHILDISH
On this day of 1st December, Billy Childish (born Steven John Hamper, 1 December 1959) was born in Chatham, Kent, England.
He is a painter, author, poet, photographer, filmmaker, singer, and guitarist. Childish has been prolific in creating music, writing, and visual art. He has led and played in bands including the Pop Rivets, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats, and the Musicians of the British Empire, primarily working in the genres of garage rock, punk, and surf and releasing more than 100 albums.
Childish was accepted into art school four times on the strength of his paintings and drawings. He did a foundation year at Medway College of Design (now the University for the Creative Arts) and at Saint Martin's School of Art, before quitting a month later. He was re-accepted at St Martin’s but was expelled for refusing to paint in the art school and other unruly behaviour.
Childish became friends with Peter Doig with whom he shared an appreciation of Munch, Van Gogh, and blues music. Doig later co-curated Childish's first London show at the Cubit Street Gallery. Childish was a "major influence" on the artist Tracey Emin,
Childish exhibited extensively and featured in the British Art Show, at The ICA London, and at White Columns Gallery in NY.
Childish is represented by neugerriemschneider Berlin, Lehmann Maupin, NY, Carl Freedman, Margate and L-13 Light Industrial Workshop, London.
Childish presented his work at ‘Art Below Regents Park' in Regent's Park Tube station.
Childish formed the "non organisation" The British Art Resistance and held an exhibition under the title Hero of The British Art Resistance at The Aquarium L-13 gallery in London: A collection of paintings, books, records, pamphlets, poems, prints, letters, film, photographs.
Childish was highly influenced by Dada and the work of Kurt Schwitters. Childish has a Kurt Schwitters poem tattooed on his left buttock and made a short film on Schwitters's life.
Tracey Emin was once asked
"Which person do you think has had the greatest influence on your life?"
She replied:
“Uhmm... It's not a person really. It was more a time, going to Maidstone College of Art, hanging around with Childish, living by the River Medway.”
