A very cute wasp! It's an ichneumon wasp, although I can't tell which species from this angle. I would think either in the genus Ophion or Netelia.

One of my favorite insects, ichneumon wasps. I found this lady drowning in the pool, so when I got her out I recorded a very nice video of her drying herself. She grooms herself like a cat, it’s so cute, I love her so much. Once she dried off, she flew away. I wish you lots of success ma’am. Ichneumon wasps are parasitoids, their life cycle is very interesting, but I have no hopes of narrowing down the species, what with 300+ species in the Netelia genus. Ichneumon wasps are one of the largest families 0.o

@blightowl submitted: A friend in my bathroom in SF Bay Area, California! Who could they be? Looks like they got a stingy butt.

Wiggly antenna. They wiggle at me saying, “who are you? And what are you doing with that large rectangle?” Just taking your picture, buddy!

The new buddy was very calm in my hand after flying away just once. I carried them outside where they flew to a happy leaf.

WHAT a precious lady. She's beautiful. She's a short-tailed ichneumonid wasp, but I'm not confident saying which genus. There are a few that look veeeeeeeery similar. They're not super likely to sting unless handled roughly, although it is possible for the short-tailed ones to jab defensively with their ovipositor. There is no venom in their stinger, though, so it would just be the jab that's painful.

This is an ichneumon wasp! These wasps are parasitoids, meaning they lay their eggs inside other insects, and their larvae develop inside those insects until they emerge as adults. Exciting! Here are some Texas ichneumon wasps I’ve seen:

Netelia sp. [link to iNaturalist]. This is the only one I know of that has been reputed to sting! All the others have ovipositors that are good for laying eggs inside other insects only!

If you look at them, the common feature you notice: long abdomen, skinny waist, long antennae. Most of them follow this pattern! But of course, not all ichneumon wasps look like this. If you see an insect that looks like this, though, chances are it is an ichneumon, or at least closely related to one.

Areyne is no. one among my ocs when it comes to just ... living the life.

Girl is singing shanties, smuggling by the side while trying to come off as a ‘reputable merchant’ to the Altmer, and most importantly seducing the bored daughters of Altmer nobles. She actually writes romantic pirate novels based on her life, with her self-insert main character being the roguish Dunmer captain Netelia, who has a love-hate relationship with an Altmer pirate queen (the spurned lover who took being replaced the worst).

The books are just as forbidden in the Dominion as her father’s later writings and it made him prouder than he could ever put into words (even though he is still not too happy about the genre but kids will be kids right?). The Adventures of Netelia are a raging success in Summerset youth culture though, and Areyne makes sure that the muses for Netelia’s various lovers always get a signed copy.

Toto video jsem natočil 9.5.2017 chvíli potom, co jsem potkal stádo muflonů, o kterém jsem psal ve svém minulém příspěvku. 

Na první pohled jsem tohoto zástupce hmyzu nebyl schopný identifikovat (hmyz není zrovna moje nejoblíbenější část živočišné říše), ale věděl jsem, že už jsem ho, nebo něco jemu podobného, už někdy předtím viděl. Identifikace byla poměrně snadná, protože velkého létajícího hmyzu zabarveného do červena asi není zvlášť velké množství (minimálně v ČR).

Při hledání údajů o tomto hmyzu jsem se dozvěděl docela zajímavou historku s Charlesem Darwinem. Tento hmyz totiž klade svá vajíčka přímo do živých housenek a vyklubané larvy je potom doslova sežerou zaživa. Charles Darwin byl údajně tímto aktem tak znechucen, že začal pochybovat o existenci milosrdného a všemohoucího boha :).

Yesterday was WEIRD. I killed what LOOKED like a short-tailed Netelia in Ron’s room while chilling in there with the door open (well, eventually it died), before which I’d noticed something on my knee that I thought was a mosquito bite (due to its initially odd shape and fast rate of growth). But then the “bite” turned TOTALLY ROUND, and I started to have terrible pains around my heart whenever I took a deep breath, or leaned forward/twisted in any direction, for several hours.

Today, the “bite” has turned into naught but a flat lil’ red mark. So, did the bug sting me for no reason and I had some sort of allergic reaction? What happened??
