Hiromi and Nemo
Tumblr media
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Higuruma Hiromi has a black cat.
A series of drabbles.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Higuruma Hiromi has a black cat. Or, the black cat has him; he is entirely uncertain as to whom the ownership falls.
Hiromi came to give this cat a home, by matter of a guilty conscience and poor circumstance. He had failed to secure another Not Guilty verdict, but his client would only walk to prison with his head held high on one condition;
"I've got a cat, Mr.Higuruma. A kitten, really. I have nobody else to give her a home and she's too soft to last as a stray." The client released his confiscated articles to Hiromi; Hiromi left court with nothing more than an address, a set of keys, and a profound sense of failure.
Hiromi arrived in a dank little street, clogged by steam, rattling gutters and the stale smells of closed restaurants. Hopping deftly up wet fire escape steps, Hiromi confirmed the door number to a set of water-stained flats, and let himself in. Hiromi's nose wrinkled against the wafting odour of damp and neglect, noting an overflowing litter tray. Stacks of condensation-moist letters pulped beneath Hiromi's feet, an empty cat food bowl revealed beneath them. Whoever had been attending to care for the home and the cat had long since abandoned their post.
"Come on, little one," Hiromi cooed, kneeling down and making gentle clicks and kisses of encouragement. The silence was too loud and deliberate for the absence of life. Hiromi pulled a bag of treats from his pocket, giving them an enthusiastic shake. A small, uncertain skitter of paws on floor responded from deep within the flat. Hiromi's eyebrows raised, coal-dark eyes glimmering with a warm smile.
A tiny black cat, thin and dull-furred, peeked her head around the corner ahead. Her yellow-eyed head dipped, bobbing up and down as she assessed Hiromi, perched between starvation and indecision. Hiromi's head dipped, too, his hooded eyes heavy as he inclined his chin in an act of surrender, hands open and visible as he shook treats onto the floor.
The cat darted, paws barely audible on the floor as she skidded to the treats, white teeth like needles as she scrabbled the food to her mouth. Almost immediately, she was on Hiromi, brushing against his hands and knees with urgent thanks, ducking her little furred head into his fingers, two tiny paws perched up on Hiromi's thighs as he cooed delighted relief at her.
Hesitantly, Hiromi scooped the cat, as light as a feather, into his arms. She purred a rattly little purr, eyes hopeful and nose dry and dull as she looked up to him, tiny claws kneading his suit jacket enthusiastically.
"Such a good girl, there we go, let's get you sorted, shall we?" The cat purred louder as if in answer, toes flexing and unflexing against Hiromi's forearm. Stepping out, sending the abandoned flat one last sorrowful glance, Hiromi locked the door, making his way down the staircase, thankful for having been adopted by this cat.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Hiromi received many appreciative and confused glances in the pet shop, one hand pushing a haphazardly stacked trolley, and the other holding his new, very tame, furry companion. The cat batted at the end of Hiromi's tie as it fell forwards, Hiromi leaning down to scrutinise cat food brands with intense appraisal. Settling on a decision with a brisk click of his tongue, he headed to the cashiers, grabbing a pet insurance leaflet, and flea and parasite prevention medicine on the way.
Hiromi felt a profound sense of purpose, having finally staged a successful rescue attempt for the first time in years.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Staggering through the doorway to his converted-factory penthouse, Hiromi shed bags and boxes at the door, his keys thrown somewhere which wasn't the key holder. He delicately protected the new little life in his arms like a concerned father. She gripped her claws into his suit jacket, little head urging outwards as her nose twitched, black whiskers flicking delicately against the scent of her new home.
"You'll like it," Hiromi insisted, scratching her softly behind the ears to an uncertain purr, "it's my home. Our home." He lowered her to the floor and she stalked forwards, apprehensive, flat to the ground and walls. Hiromi prepared her litter tray, bed, food and toys. By the time he had finished, the cat had completed her preliminary survey, and, satisfied with her findings, hopped promptly onto Hiromi's old leather sofa, claws pricking at the fabric to make it comfy. Hiromi let out a halted, exasperated breath, glancing between her bed and her-- "by all means, make yourself at home."
Hiromi sat beside the cat, stroking her little head with two lithe fingers, musing out loud to her: "No microchip on record. Never registered with a vets. Even the neighbours had no idea your old dad had a cat."
Hiromi allowed the cat to step into his lap again, purring. He ducked down so she could boop her nose to his, and Hiromi breathed a warm, hushed laugh; "A real nobody aren't you? A Nemo, hmm?" The cat purred louder, rubbing her face against Hiromi's aquiline nose.
From that day onwards, Nemo the cat and Hiromi the Lawyer and Sorcerer, were a family.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
"Yes, Mr.Nagashima. Yes. Yes. Tomorrow-- tomorrow morning, 9a.m. sharp-- would you stop that, you little pest? NO! No, not you Mr.Nagashima, my cat, she's a tinker--"
Hiromi performed an awkward tango around the room, trying to hook Nemo off his trouser leg with his opposite foot, and she clung on, thrilled by her little game. Her yellow eyes narrowed up at Hiromi and her tail flicked in challenge. With case files under his arm, and a mobile phone in his hand, Hiromi mouthed wordless reproach at Nemo as she meowed, meowed, meowed in response.
Ending his call and dumping his case notes on the sofa, Hiromi lifted Nemo eye to eye, glaring at her without venom. She stared into him, eyes gleaming and innocent. Hiromi opened his mouth to speak, and Nemo raised a paw, pressing it to his nose. Hiromi stopped, huffed.
The cat won this round.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
"Nemo? Nemo? Where are you?" Hiromi had returned from work, and was dismayed not to be greeted by the usual little chirps and meows from his unruly housemate. He wandered the flat at a crouch, clicking and kissing, trying to draw Nemo out, panic starting to set in that she had got out, his clicking and kissing noises increasing in urgency.
Reaching a quick resolve, Hiromi headed towards the door, hunting for his keys which were never on the hook. There was a quiet little meow from the armchair in the nook by the front door. Hiromi frowned, unable to see her. Another meow. Hiromi squinted. Momentarily, Nemo's eyes flicked open, and she melted out of yesterday's black suit jacket, abandoned on the armchair.
Hiromi clasped a hand to his chest, leaning back against the sideboard in dramatic relief.
"Don't scare me like that! I bet you were enjoying me worrying, weren't you, you little tart?"
A single mollified meow pipped from somewhere near Nemo's food bowl.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Hiromi lay curled into his sofa. All the lights were switched off and Hiromi was cold, tired and hungry, downtrodden by his day. Humiliating memories of the day's court defeat, his struggles to adapt to the world of Jujutsu Sorcery and the weight of life rolled before his eyes, and he sunk his head into his hands with a low groan.
The tiny weight beside him on the sofa, shifted. It crawled over his shoulders to settle in the warm gap between Hiromi's chest and the back of the sofa. Rolling playfully, and pressing little pink toe-beans to his chin, Nemo purred at Hiromi, surveying him for injury.
With a resigned sniffle, Hiromi stroked her, glossy, smooth, and calming, an inky black puddle in the darkness of his flat. They stayed this way for hours, sharing the mutual therapy of company.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Shhhck. Shhhhhck. Shhh--
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The unusual sparring match continued for hours-- Nemo, perched magnanimously on the kitchen counter, believed herself subtle as she slowly eked Hiromi's coffee mug towards the edge with one dainty paw.
Hiromi, refusing to sacrifice the comfortable nest he had made on the sofa, extended his gavel across the length of the kitchen, gently knocking his mug back away from the lip of the counter.
The match continued for some time. Hiromi and Nemo were both competitive.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Hiromi's flat eventually looked like Nemo the cat had always lived there.
Bits of food which she didn't want in her food bowl, dotted the floor around it, until Hiromi cleared it up at the end of every day.
Nemo's bed, as new, never slept in, held her selection of toys (also unplayed with, sharing the space with one well-scratched black tie and a well-chewed shoelace).
The pillow beside Hiromi's in his bed, had a permanent Nemo-shaped dent in it.
Nemo plaited herself between Hiromi's ankles when her monthly food delivery arrived, as they danced around each other towards the kitchen.
She walked across his keyboard, greeting his delighted colleagues with chirps and meows during his Zoom calls.
"What would I do without you, Nims?" Hiromi asked her daily. She spared him a withering, mysterious glance, forcing his enquiry towards the rhetorical as she licked her paws in feigned disinterest.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Higuruma Nemo has a Lawyer Daddy. Or, the Lawyer Daddy has her; both are uncertain and unbothered as to whom the ownership falls.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
For @silkspunweb, my little black cat.

More dust settling... I'll talk about Pixar some more, given that this was the year a certain Pete Docter quote caught a loooot of fire...
Mainly, him implying that - ahead of the release of INSIDE OUT 2 - Pixar would back down from making more "autobiographical" films like LUCA, TURNING RED, and ELEMENTAL, and going for more "general appeal" sorts of stories.
I read this as Pixar resigning themselves to the sort-of "genre" that some people think they are. Makers of "what-if" movies, "what if [x thing] were alive?" "What if this thing you've heard of was actually like some world/factory/city?" And restraining the filmmakers from telling stories that meant a lot to them.
And yet... The recently-announced HOPPERS, directed by WE BEAR BEARS creator Daniel Chong, seems to contradicts those statements. Now you may be saying, "Obviously HOPPERS began development years ago, so it would be one of their last films in that vein." I know that. I know how these things work. It was in development as far back as 2020, when Chong returned to Pixar.
That being said, significant revisions could've been made thereafter, prior to the rollout at this year's D23.
But, from the looks of it, HOPPERS - which will be the studio's 30th feature, by the way - will follow in the footsteps of LUCA, TURNING RED, and ELEMENTAL. Stylistically, it's a lot different from the usual Pixar look. Apparently Lindsay Olivares, who was production/character designer on THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES at Sony, is all over this one. It looks very wacky and zoogy and cartoony, much more TURNING RED than TOY STORY and FINDING NEMO.
And the premise isn't "what if [x thing] were alive?" Maybe the beaver habitat will have some of that "it's like a city/factory" thing going on, but the main premise is rather out there. Basically AVATAR with beavers, a girl puts a part of her brain into a robo-beaver in order to be among them and ultimately save them from a threat. Chong will probably execute this in a way that's different and very cool.
Then you have ELIO, which had a dramatic director change, but thankfully a release date delay because of it. More time to shape things, and not rush it out under immense pressure. Domee Shi already has BAO and TURNING RED to her name, while Madeline Sharafian has BURROW. It's also worth noting that Adrian Molina, the film's original director, is still at Pixar and is already at work on another film. Sometimes, directors kicked off of their movies during John Lasseter's reign just straight up left the studio. Jan Pinkava, Brad Lewis, Brenda Chapman, to name a few. The latter had WORDS. Molina's still at Pixar, has a new project in the works, and seems to want to stay. It must've been an amicable split.
They both got this, and in the recent interview Pete Docter did for The Wrap, it seemed like they really wanted the movie going forward to emphasize the feeling of being a kid in a big, often scary and intimidating world. Albeit against the backdrop of a cosmic adventure. What he was talking about there was far removed from the corporate-speak talk in the other articles, which were quite cynical to be honest. The Bloomberg one in particular from a few months back, which whined about Pixar's more original movies and posited that SEQUELS would restore their magic... Hunk o' logic right there!
VFX veteran Todd Vaziri put it best, on twitter.
everything about that bloomberg pixar piece is tras it's pro-"content", pro-commerce, anti-art
Couldn't have said it better myself... So, yeah, different Docter when Iger's gun isn't to his head, or the trades having him answer questions specifically.
Weirdly, INSIDE OUT 2... A sequel, and possibly on track to become the highest-grossing animated movie ever, was more creative to me than most of what came out of Disney - across all their film divisions - over the past couple of years. It could've just been a blah rehash of INSIDE OUT, but there were plenty of clever things here, and all the mixed media characters like Bloofy and Lance. Good stuff. It did not, however, restore Pixar's magic in my eyes. Maybe at the box office, but... I still feel TURNING RED is my favorite film to have gotten out of that studio in years, and I really dug SOUL and LUCA, and had great fun with LIGHTYEAR and ELEMENTAL. So yeah, none of that.
Pixar seems fine, really. They continue to do cool stuff, it seems Docter and crew understand that's the way. It's WDAS who I feel are struggling, but I digress. D23 reminded me that they've got some neat stuff coming.
Surely, the sequel announcements make it seem like that's the future... But really, if it were, the announcement of an INCREDIBLES 3 would've been followed by FINDING Somebody, CARS 4, WALL-E 2, ONWARD 2, etc.
In reality, I think INCREDIBLES 3 is a long way off. Brad Bird "developing" it tells me the film is in its Jack-Jack stages. TOY STORY 5 has had a concrete release date for some time and is full steam ahead, INCREDIBLES 3 is different. I'm sure there will be another original between the 2026 release of TOY STORY 5 and whenever INCREDIBLES 3 comes out, granted that it's not the studio's June 2027 picture. Which I kinda doubt it is, but we'll see.
Let's look at both decades...
The 2010s had seven sequels vs. only four originals.
This decade so far and including the announced upcoming films: Four sequels vs. seven originals. Subject to change, a few more originals and maybe one more sequel can sneak in there. But yeah, night and day difference. Pixar doing two pictures every other year allows them to get more originals out. I'm thinking they'll do a spring and summer 2028 thing like they did in 2022 and hope to do in 2026. (They had also planned that for 2020 and this year.) If so, I can imagine spring going to either Domee Shi's next or that project Adrian Molina is now working on, and summer going to INCREDIBLES 3. Meaning an original for summer 2027. KITBULL director Rosana Sullivan's movie, maybe?
I find it ever curious and frustrating that social media blew up over TOY STORY 5 and INCREDIBLES 3, but there was relative crickets on ELIO and HOPPERS... Complaining drives engagement, as does "TOY STORY" and "INCREDIBLES". Household names. ELIO, what's that? HOPPERS? I dunno. So, yeah.

So I keep talking about that Pixar Super Smash bros idea and I’m going to continue because I think it would be cool
So the character roster would be: Woody, Buzz, Sulley, Mike, Jessie, Flik, Mr. Incredible, WALL-E, Dory, Ember, Ian, Atta, Joy, Barley, Wade, Merida, Elastigirl, Imelda, EVE, McQueen, Joe, Syndrome, Remy, Mater, Bo Peep, Dash, Violet, Jack-Jack, Sadness, Bing-Bong, Hopper, Doc Hudson, Linguini, 22, Luca, Alberto, Giulia, Meilin, Latso, Arlo, Spot, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Harris Hubert & Hamish, Marlin, Nemo, Crush, Randal, Carl, Dug, Héctor, Miguel, Ernesto, Evelyn/Screenslaver, Ming Lee, and probably even more! Or maybe some of these would just be spirit fighters/bosses
Arena ideas: Andy’s Bedroom, Sunnyside daycare, Monsters Inc. factory, 4*Town concert arena, Ant Island, Radiator Springs, Gusteau’s restaurant/city of Paris, Portorosso, DunBroch castle, Element City, East Australian Current, Carl’s house (as it floats around buildings and clouds and eventually ends in Paradise Falls), Riley’s mind (switches between Honesty Island, Goofball Island, etc), Land of the Dead, Monsters University campus, The Great Before, a Cars’ themed racing arena, Clawtooth Mountain, Bug City, the Axiom, Pizza Planet, P Sherman’s dentist office, and many more!
Special items: the Pixar ball that you can throw at opponents, a plate of ratatouille (and other dishes from the movie) that can heal damage, an Incredibles mask that temporarily gives you one of the families’ powers, a Zurg arm-cannon that shoots tennis balls, and of course the Assist Trophy that calls another character to aid you in battle! I imagine characters from this item would be like Pepita, Rex, Kevin, Sox, Massimo, AUTO, Gale, the circus bugs, Jackson Storm, Fergus, Bruce, etc. Basically characters that had some importance in the movies’ but that I don’t think would be in the official playable roster

Monsters, Inc x Finding Nemo AU
Seems like everyone liked the backstory for Hell, might as well do one for Heaven.
Adam and Lute are close friends; they have known each other since the first man's early days in Heaven, shared an apartment together, and worked at Heaven Incorporated.
Heaven Incorporated is the largest portal factory in Heaven. They produce portals that may look like regular doors (mostly to the Winners) but, they can allow any middle/low-class Heavenborn(and Adam) to travel outside of these pearly gates, either by C.H.E.R.U.B to protect human lives on Earth or the Exorcists for their annual cleansing in Hell. While most of the doors have been tested and approved by the Elders...some were not...(can you guess who it may be?)
With Adam being one of its top Exorcists and Lute being his assistant, let's just say that they're living the good life...well..at least tried to.
It has been 30 years since...ever since she...But why would he, Adam the First Man™, ever care about the first woman, the same woman who cheated on him with that...bitch-ass clown fucker(welp someone's jealous)! Sure, he does hate her for that but...that doesn't mean he wants her to die!
Rumors have it that Adam was the one who killed the Queen...but in reality, it was....someone else.

MAAAN IM ALREADY SO INTERESTED IN THIS HINGER GAMES AU :3 i just. saw penny in distressing situation and was like "HEEELL YEAH! PENNY ANGST!"
anywho, are there any other tributes youve established? maybe some more worldbuilding in this version of panem? or whatever setting this is IM STILL READING THE FIC SRRY
HIIIIIII !!! LKLKSDJFK THANK U FOR THE INTEREST !!! hell yeah penny angst <3
so far, most of the tributes are ocs or inspired by existing characters in the rotbftd - futuristic four - non/dreamworks fandoms that i gave panem-accurate names so they blend in seamlessly in the background without distracting from the main characters . here's a few characters that are inspired by existing characters:
Shrushti, Tadashi's stylist - Toothiana from ROTG
Mirana, District 1 escort - White Queen from Alice in Wonderland
Thal, District 5 (age 12) - Nemo
Birdy, District 7 (age 15) - Astrid from HTTYD
Sonora, District 10 (age 15) - Snow White
Irri, District 11 (age 14) - Tip from Home
it was difficult to put other existing characters into the world (into the districts, specifically) because Panem's struggles and worldbuilding are so specific that i couldn't just plop them into it without tweaking them a lot 😆 i found that the tadashi, hiro, penny, elsa, anna, and hans were the easiest to put into the world bc of their character and motivation as a whole (though initially, i only put penny in it bc she's a young redhead that elsa could project to but the more i studied her and wrote her, she ended up being perfect for the world)
i tried to make this version of panem as close to panem but with additional info that i made up bc the focus isnt on district 12. so here's a few details i added or built upon:
districts have no communication with each other so their knowledge abt each other are also delayed (penny discovers that panem has been using tidal power for ten years now through thal when she thought it was new and unstable technology)
desirable victors (and sometimes their children) are regularly brought in by the capitol to attend socialite parties for ....... various............... entertainment ............ purposes ............ (elsa and anna may or may not have a capitol citizen father ..........)
apart from interviewing victors abt their hobbies and life post-games, there's also reality shows about victors and/or their children (which is what elsa and anna were in for most of their lives)
each capable non-career district has its own way of discreetly training their children either through work or education (district 12, due to being the poorest, doesnt have either of these) . in district 3, survival skills are embedded into the advanced curriculum. unfortunately, they can only offer the advanced curriculum to the smarter students as most will/have work in the factories.
hiro and penny are classmates in the advanced curriculum ! theyre both training to be inventors (hiro has a focus on robots just like tadashi while penny has a focus on gadgets)
district 2 and 4 dont have dedicated training centers bc their kids' training are though work (2 with military training, 4 with fishing) while district 1 (luxury goods & lifestyle) have a specific academy that includes training (disguised as physical education) in their curriculum (training tributes before the games is actually illegal lmao so careers find loopholes around this)
UM THATS ALL FOR NOW I THINK THIS POST IS GOING TO BE TOO LONG IF I YAP SOME MORE LMAO TNX FOR ASKING !!!!

D23 feature animation reveal stuff, sans MUFASA, that I'm most excited for and the least excited for:
HOPPERS (Pixar, Spring 2026, likely 3/6/2026): Pixar's next original, from WE BEAR BEARS creator Daniel Chong. Sounds absolutely wacky and fun, more in line with the looser likes of LUCA and TURNING RED. More "what if someone did this wacky cartoonish thing", less "what if that universal thing you've known as a child was some kind of factory?". Kinda like how early Pixar used to sometimes do, for every TOY STORY and MONSTERS, INC. there was an A BUG'S LIFE or FINDING NEMO. Just straight up animal stories and people existing and such.
ELIO (Pixar, 6/13/2025) - I've been on board this one from the word-go, as I can't pass up a colorful space adventure made at Pixar. Even with the pushback, and subsequent director change, I'm still there. Domee Shi returning to the director's chair is exciting enough, as TURNING RED is probably my favorite film to have come out of Pixar in a while. Madeline Sharafian directing with her is also exciting, because I really dug her BURROW SparkShort. I think they'll both bring a unique perspective to this galactic tale, while keeping true to what former director Adrian Molina started. Will need to see more, especially of what the new directors have in mind, because all we have for now is the old pre-switch teaser.
INCREDIBLES 3 (Pixar, TBD) - That's right. I love the world of THE INCREDIBLES, and I'm more than game to go back. I just hope Brad Bird actually directs, because "developing" could mean anything. I remember that sort-of unclearness when INCREDIBLES 2 was first announced roughly four years before release, it seemed like Bird was only writing until it turned out that he was back in the director's chair as well. If not, I'll be curious to see who fills the suit. Not like someone *can't* pull it off anyways, for INSIDE OUT 2 was directed by Kelsey Mann and not Pete Docter, and I quite liked that one. Ditto some of the other Pixar sequels not spearheaded by the original films' directors.
ZOOTOPIA 2 (Disney Animation, 11/26/2025) - ZOOTOPIA is one of my favorite recent WDAS movies, and the world created in that picture is one I'm really excited to go back to, especially with the additions of reptiles and aquatic animals. I'm a little bit skeptical because it seems the original's director and creator, Byron Howard, isn't really involved? Jared Bush, co-director of the original, is seemingly director here. Not confirmed, but he's been doing all the talking. I'm sure he'll nail this one, and what we've seen of it promises the same witty detective story stuff and attention to detail that made this animal world unique.
UNTITLED ORIGINAL (Disney Animation, 11/25/2026) - Well, since we know nothing about it, and who for sure is directing... I mean, this could be that rumored Middle Eastern fairy fantasy directed by Suzi Yoonessi, or it could be something hitherto unannounced. Very odd still that they didn't say what this was, but I suppose it's as expendable as any other non-sequel, and could be cancelled at last minute. WDAS, I feel, is being run very weirdly under Jennifer Lee. What I heard of WISH and FROZEN II's production, the big shakeup on RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, and me feeling the films have mostly been just kinda... Fine, and a little toothless, this one's admittedly not too high on my list at the moment. I'd have to know what it's about first before I can properly evaluate it. If it is the fairy movie, then it'd probably be a few clicks up, because the premise of that is intriguing. Again, I gotta know more than just Untitled, haha.
TOY STORY 5 (Pixar, 6/19/2026) - So tricky for me... On the one hand, you have TOY STORY veteran Andrew Stanton at the helm, the first time he has directed a TOY STORY picture. The army of deluded Buzzes sounds like fun, even though that basic idea has been used across pretty much all of the movies. (Even in TOY STORY 4, where Buzz consults his button-press sayings for advice.) On the other hand... Well, I'm still wondering how they'll get Woody back into the fold since TOY STORY 4 was the big epic goodbye. I'm still kinda banking on him paying visits to Bonnie's house every once in a while, whenever the carnival comes back into town. I also don't think Stanton is gonna simply give us a "phone bad" movie. Like how TOY STORY 4 did with Forky, maybe this series will find a unique new way to present electronics. Maybe they too can be sentient? Or apps on them? Like, I can picture the toy gang talking to a character in a kids' app on Bonnie's iPad. Kind of in a WRECK-IT RALPH manner. That is, if they go that direction. There's potential, but I'm not as excited for this one as some of others, as it will have been the fifth movie in the series. Pixar's first family is pretty much just here to stay, really.
MOANA 2 (Disney Animation, 11/27/2024) - The new trailer got me more excited. Looks to promise an epic scope and the same fun tone, and the idea of a speaking nature-based villain I think is really neat. A fun contrast to Te Fiti/Te-Ka, who didn't speak, and was rightfully angry because of Maui's actions. (Thus affirming my thesis that he's the actual villain of MOANA.) This baddie just seems straight up bad, but we'll see, they could have a solid reasoning for being a violent storm! (And I'm sure that will anger everybody who pines for a Renaissance era-esque meanie.) Anyways, being that it's a WDAS movie, it could still get focus grouped to the moon and back and end up being far from what it could be, but I'm looking forward to seeing the characters again.
FROZEN III (Disney Animation, 11/24/2027) - The Eyvind Earle-esque concept art is quite beautiful, and I like the idea of these films being based on the individual seasons, but... In execution, I think they're pretty much alright, they certainly have their moments. I was never really all that huge on FROZEN, despite really digging certain elements of it. I went into FROZEN II not expecting much, and weirdly got more out of it than most people did. So, FROZEN III... I can take it or leave it, if it's going to be the usual mix of stuff I like and the stuff I don't care for, and that same resistance to go hard with such a concept. I apply the same to the inevitable FROZEN IV... Hey, why does FROZEN get a trilogy, let alone a quadrilogy, before FANTASIA? FANTASIA 2006 and 2023 should've been things, damn it.

MAURA IMPORTANT AS FUCK !!!!!! what do you think david's favorite books are. make this as self indulgent as you want bc then i will also learn what books you like :33 personally i think he loves classic polish books (they help him reconnect with that part of his identity which can be a little hard considering he lives so far away) such as pan tadeusz or kordian and especially wesele (it didn't come out until the 1900s but shhh he would LOVE wesele) and also i think he really loves 20,000 leagues under the sea (i think he just loves the fantastic elements, the way the ocean is described + also captain nemo was originally supposed to be polish and yadda yadda i don't want to dump too much here..) AND little women. because of reasons i think. the march family dynamic is so sweet and also i definitely think david's gay ass would find laurie cute SORRY i got really passionate about this my bad.
Guys, I had and Epic Autism Moment so this will all be under the cut. You have no clue what you've started Dave <3
OMG YES YES YES!!! I LOVE THIS! ok ok ok so i definitely agree with you about the polish literature thing (although i obviously don't know anything about polish literature) I always imagined David to live in an immigrant neighborhood (and of course be an immigrant himself) and I'm sure he has several neighbors who, throughout his youth, lent him and gifted him books.
(going off the rails for a second idc) I think his family is really active in the community (of course they attend shul) Mayer and Esther love talking with the neighbors and having them over for dinner or just tea or something. Esther mends clothes to make a little extra money so she frequently has folks coming to her with that. I also think there's a kosher deli nearby and Mayer is friends with the owner (well the whole Jacobs family is friends with their family) I know that in 92sies it's established that Mayer works in a factory but with the stage version we get a bit more lenience PLUS (this might sound terrible) but like. his injury doesn't look that bad in 92sies (LET ME EXPLAIN) his arm is just in a sling so we can infer his arm is broken (i honestly don't remember if they ever say??) but I feel like he'd be able to a job like he wouldn't be completely indisposed. anyway in the stage version it makes more sense that he has a leg injury and can't walk, hence the inability to work. I imagine he helps do deliveries and like loading stuff off of carts. His injury actually happened out on the street trying to stop a kid from getting hit by a wagon and he did, it was just to his expense. "twisted his leg up real bad" I take that literally like.. it got caught in the wheel and twisted up. and I think the deli owner saw it happen and got him home (along with a few other fellas and a doctor).
ANYWAy the whole reason I say that is just like. I think the Jacobs are a well liked family in the community and everyone always found David endearing and saw his love of reading and writing and wanted to help give him the resources he needed (especially being a polish kid removed from his culture they wanted to help restore that)
I agree that he likes Little Women!! He also enjoyed reading War and Peace (I haven't finished it yet but I just KNOW Davey loves Pierre because little awkward man who's probably autistic). I think he also enjoys Wuthering Heights (which admittedly I haven't read but my friend really loves it and has talked about it so I think he would enjoy it) along with poetry. I think he loves books/stories/poems that are very descriptive and have good imagery because it helps him transport himself and like really be engulfed by the story
He'd read Moby Dick but he despises it. He wanted an epic ocean adventure but half the chapters are just all about whales (like science-y and shit) which,,, would be fine if he'd picked up a textbook about whales. He just wanted more from it and didn't enjoy the ending. WHICH IS WHY he prefers 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea because if he wants to read a good story involving the ocean he's not gonna pick up Moby fucking Dick.
um. yeah.
i had literally never thought about this before but the second that I saw the ask i was typing up a storm. hehe
ALSO LITERALLY STOP APOLOGIZING I LOVE WHEN ANYTHING FROM YOU APPEARS IN MY ASK BOX you could send me a ten page essay and I would read it beginning to end like :DDDDD and enjoy every second

More notes and my full opinion on the rest of the novel
The movie most certainly gave Jekyll more spine than he has in the novel
He makes a suggestion to just leave during the explosions and leave everyone in Venice to face their fates, and is constantly described as cowering under Nemo and Quartermain's glares and his "No! Hyde will never control me again!" is more of a whimper than him being stubborn and Dorian gets an extended line "But without him, my dear doctor, what use are you?" Gray said with a taunting lilt to his voice "Do you plan to apply bandages and iodine to our scrapes once we're all finished?"
He is not the first one to reach Ishmael before Nemo, who ends up being the one to cradle Ishmael, and it takes Nemo yelling at the doctor to get him to try and treat the wounded man Sawyer is the one who breaks the Gramaphone not Nemo and the novel is hinting more towards SawyerxMina over the JekyllxMina hints in the film
the saving of the Nautilus is still an awesome and epic moment for Jekyll-Hyde though he is described as shell-shocked instead of walking up straight and smiling like in the film
Sawyer is hinted to be the one who will become the leader throughout, again, this is something I'm glad got left out of the film to allow more room for Mina to take up her role from the comics
Unfortunatly it also mentions Jonathan dying during the mission to take down Dracula (and that Mina met Gray five years after the fact meaning no baby Quincy in the novelverse
The tiger is revealed to be REAL here, not a vision as it was apparently tracking Skinner, meaning he saw it too and Mina does not smack Skinner a good one for pinching her butt.
Jekyll's scenes several times read more like the fanfictions, yeah, not a fun image and another happy change for the film to make.
though Huck Finn gets a more proper mention in the novel and Sawyer makes an earlier appearance and is mistaken for a stalking fanboy by Quartermain.
Another moment I liked was a moment where Nemo thinks of his past and even gets in another little moment for Nemo and Hyde
Nemo motioned the fearsome Hyde back as he crouched at the grate and peered into the dungeons below. He saw the hopeful faces of hostages turned up to look at him "These must be the scientists wives and children". In a flash of memory, he thought of his own wife and son, both tragically killed. his fingers clenched, and he had to force the thoughts away. Nemo called upon his philosophy and prayers, just to make his heart go numb again, his past go blank. He put a finger to his lips, and the hostages inside fell quiet, stifling their confusion and joy. "We will rescue you. Do not be frightened." He signaled for Hyde to come forward, and as the brutish man's shadow fell over the grate, Nemo held out a hand to calm the captives. "Do not be frightened of him"
Another interesting add on is Grey offering Mina to join him and to give into her demons and to return to London with him and a small tease of him perhaps being sorry for his actions…only for him to of course say no he's lying about THAT too and enjoyed the treachery
During the fight in the factory, Hyde protects and then sends Nemo's crewmen to go find and help him, planning on fighting by himself despite being strained and he does not call for Nemo's help in the novel either and Nemo finds Hyde by himself and Hyde even stops Nemo from interfearing in the fight against Dante by putting a hand in front of him though Nemo does through himself into it a few moments later and the rapid slashes are shown to be a "death of a thousand cuts" gamble against the dante-hyde
the ending reveals Skinner as a member of the secret service of the queen or some other stuff and Bond appears…it hints at the Martain plot from the comic...yeah a bit of a hasty mess there with the films funeral scene being more of a proper ending
But final thoughts, I did enjoy the novel, I'm glad I bought it and will no doubt read it several more times, do I like it better than the movie? No, but I do feel that if the novel and film had been properly mixed, we could have had a movie bigger and better than the first Avengers film.
So if you are eager for an adventure, go look the novel up and enjoy the ride

Can't help but imagine the ghosts of the Weasels like at the end of Finding Nemo, just looking around the mess left behind and asking out loud "Now what?"
🎵Ba dum, dum duuum dum, "Somewhere, beyond the sea~"🎵
Omg i can see this XD especially since their ghosts are clearly seen being as... For lack of better term, alive, as their weasel forms are. Like- what else is there, now? And if their bodies were dipped too, then they can't exactly go back in their bodies (though I have posted about a possible scenario that Wheezy's and Psycho's bodies were saved and they were able to come back to life later).
Buy I'm just dying at the thought that these fellas just- decide to haunt the Acme Factory XD maybe if WFRR got a sequel, the ghost bois could have been the antagonists of the film 🤔
