You and Sunghoon weren't strangers, you wouldn't go that far.
However, there was a good reason that you weren't friends â you were never home when he was at your parents' house. You'd moved out with your boyfriend a month or so into him babysitting your menace of a sister. She was well-behaved for him, but had been an absolute tornado of a child when your mother would ask you to babysit. You were actually the one who found Sunghoon through an ad on social media, and he'd been yet another thing to add to your parents' monthly budget.
Then again, no one told them to have another kid so late in their lives. Or yours, for that matter. You were eighteen when Mina was born, and it'd been a pretty rocky five years since then. You went off to college and didn't really get to see her grow up, and she soon learned you were someone she couldn't depend on emotionally because you were rarely able to stick around outside of holidays. It pained you, but you knew you'd eventually get the time to bond with her.
And that time came very quickly after meeting Sunghoon â because your boyfriend dumped you after six months, insisting he was too busy with school to maintain a relationship. Heeseung was a graduate student, and he tutored on the side for extra cash. Your parents funded your lifestyle, so you'd never worried about anything â until Heeseung sat you down and said that the relationship was stressing him out.Â
Needless to say, a week after the breakup â you moved back in with your parents and left him to figure out the rent himself. It was a calculated move, but your parents agreed that you didn't need that kind of energy in your life. It didn't stop you from remembering all the other times Heeseung dogged you â from taking continuous 'breaks' from your relationship in the three years you were together, to falling prey to temptation (read: another woman grinding on him at a bar while you were two feet away.)
And you talked about him to every person you possibly could â including now, your little sister's babysitter as he washed dishes in your parents' kitchen. The conversation hadn't started out this way, he'd actually been telling you how much Mina talked about you while you were gone.
"Anyway, that kid loves you, man." He nodded as he slid a plate onto the drying rack, and you laughed softly. "Mina was born when I was a teenager. She just thinks I'm cool now, she'll go through the phase of hating me when she's older." You shrug.
"I wouldn't be so sure. She talks about you a lot, something about you playing a viobib?" His brow is arched, and you snort. "Violin. I played her the violin one time so she'd leave me alone. I'm surprised she talks to you so much, she has a hard time warming up to anyone. Even my boyfriend can't get her to talk to him."
His eyes narrowed slightly, "You have a boyfriend? Since when?" You shrug again. "Since before I met you. I guess I should say ex, though. Boyfriend is the title he prefers, but not the one he deserves. At least, not right now." You say pointedly, and his brows furrowed as he leans on the counter, arms crossed.
"Elaborate." "You're babysitting my kid sister, not giving me counseling."
"Consider it a perk for eldest daughters who act like they deserve shitty men." He says, a bite to his tone as you scrunch your nose. You sigh, nibbling your lip before rolling your eyes. "We're on-and-off. Sometimes I call it off, sometimes he does. He's in grad school and he tutors, and he said everything was stressing him out. He dumped me a bit ago, and I moved back in here. I'm surprised I haven't seen you around more."
"Right, so what about that arrangement is making you believe that you deserve this sort of behavior?"Â
You peek up at him, his brows still furrowed as he awaits your answer. Your stomach tightens a bit as you blink. "I guessâŚI don't know, actually." "Okay, then ditch that loser." He shrugs, and you scoff. "He's not a loser. He's smart and sweet and we're just going through a rough patch." "If you have to justify his presence in your life or his treatment of you to your friends or anyone you talk about him to, then he's a loser. He sucks and he doesn't deserve to have access to you in any way." Sunghoon clasps his hands in front of himself, and you frown.
"He's nice enough." "Yeah, so is any other guy, babe. You're not gonna give just any dude a chance because he's 'nice enough,' are you?" He peers at you through his shaggy hair, and you feel your cheeks heat slightly in embarrassment. "The fact that you allow that behavior, seemingly quite often, will only make him make you his doormat. He'll do it over and over until he's sick of you, then he gets to dump you and make it seem like it was a mutual thing. You won't win in a situation like that." "It's not about winning." You mutter, grabbing a peach out of the fruit bowl in front of you. He leans back on the island, arms crossed in front of him.Â
"Isn't it, though? There is always a prize and a player in a relationship. You," He taps the tip of your nose with his finger gently. "Are the prize, and he's the player. If he's not playing to win you, then he's playing to lose and wasting your time."
You stare into his eyes, not missing the way his brows jump as he leans slightly closer.
"Stop wasting your time on a shitty dude when you can do so much better. Especially if you're really as cool as Mina says. Kids don't lie about people they admire." His tone is slightly teasing, and you roll your eyes. "Mina has thrown eggs at me, I wouldn't be so sure she admires me." "I don't know, she said you're really nice to everyone. That you're funny, you can singâŚdanceâŚ" Sunghoon lists a few things your sister said while you were asleep, and you feel your ears grow hot. "She also said you're the one who taught her how to do backflips, and that she wants to be like you when she grows up. I'd suggest getting that guy out of your life sooner rather than later so you can set a good example." "Did she mention him?" Your eyes snap up, and Sunghoon shrugs. "Once or twice. She said he makes you cry more often than not." You snort, shaking your head as you look down. "What does she know? She's five."
"Kids see things from an unbiased perspective, they're still learning how to be functioning humans. She associates him with you being upset, so I wouldn't be surprised if you told me that you're 'on a break' right now. I've been listening to you for five minutes and I already don't like this guy. If he cared, he'd be here. He doesn't care." "You're only saying that because it's what I need to hear." You roll your eyes as you avoid the rest of his spiel, and Sunghoon shakes his head, stealing a grape from the ones he washed for you earlier. "I'm saying that because it's the truth, and when I love, I make sure the person I love knows." "You don't even know him." You scowl, and he smirks. "Don't have to, babe. It's all over your face. You look defeated as hell when you talk about him." "Not your babe, Sunghoon." You shake your head, and he shrugs. "Could be, if you ditched that guy. I don't even know your favorite color but I can almost guarantee I'd be a better boyfriend than him."
"My favorite color is green." You mutter, and he leans closer to your face. "Anything else you wanna tell me about this guy?" "Why? You'll just be mean about it." You mumble, licking your lips when you feel his fingers tilt your chin up. He coos, "You're cute when you're defensive over a scumbag." "Stop that." You shove his hand away, and he smiles. "You need a rebound or something. All you've been able to talk about since you moved back is this guy. He sucks, babe." "Ugh, I know! Alright, I know he sucks, you don't have to rub it in." You frown, biting into the peach in your hand. "D'you know he'd never tell me I was pretty? I mean, I know I am, he didn't have to. But it would've been nice to hear every once in a damn while." You chew angrily, before hearing him laugh softly. "You have enough confidence for a man to feel like he doesn't need to tell you that. You carry yourself so well, it's honestly very sexy." You look up at him, meeting his eyes. They're calm and sincere, like he didn't just call you sexy in the middle of your kitchen while you're wearing a random t-shirt and sweatpants. "Me?" "Yeah, you. It's just us in here, Y/N." He snorts, "You seriously need to get over this guy. I don't like hearing you talk about this like you deserved it." "What do you know? You hardly know me." You know your voice sounds bitter, but it only spurs him on. "Don't need to know you super well to know you just need to feel appreciated." "Right, appreciated." You roll your eyes, tossing the half eaten peach in the trash. "Like I'm gonna find that in a rebound." "You can." He nods, making you snort. "Like who? You?" "Sure." He shrugs, and you nearly choke on your own spit. "What? Sunghoon, be serious." "I am being serious. If that's what it takes, I'm all for it." He shrugs again, like this is the most nonchalant thing ever, like he's not offering to fuck the bitterness out of you so you'll act normal again. You gawk at him, "Sunghoon, I cannot just use you like that. We hardly know each other, are you insane?" "Is it insane if I say I want you to?" He leans forward on the counter, a soft blush on his cheeks. You gape at him, his finger coming to close your mouth. "Does it matter how well we know each other? I'm sure it'll be a one time thing, and since we don't see each other often, I don't see the harm." "You want me to use you to get over my ex-boyfriend? You want to be my rebound?" You're shocked at his suggestion, he can tell as he shrugs. "You can use me anytime you want. Think about it." He winks, pushing off the island.
You feel your cheeks grow hot as he leaves the kitchen, letting you sit with your thoughts.
Sunghoon lived a mile away, in an apartment complex you helped him pick out once your parents hired him. Your mother had insisted he live in the house, but your father refuted by saying Sunghoon was a grown man, he needed his own space. You'd taken him to fill out the paperwork, and it was one of the last interactions you'd had with Sunghoon before moving out.
You sigh shakily, running your hands through your hair.
It wasn't the worst idea. You knew that Sunghoon wouldn't have offered it if he wasn't attracted to you, at least. You knew what it was like to feel desired, but something about the way Sunghoon looked at you made you feel giddy.
Maybe it was the promise of feeling something new, or the idea that you shouldn't do it â because he works for your parents. Getting involved with you could cost him his job, if anyone found out.Â
You feel your phone buzz in your pocket, and you sigh as you reach to grab it.
Message From: Park Sunghoon (Babysitter) [8:32pm] you know where i live if you're down. [8:32pm] just let me know, gorgeous.
Fuck.

Bad idea, bad idea, bad fucking idea.
It hadn't even been a day since you and Sunghoon had the conversation in your parents' kitchen. Or rather, the awkward moment in your parents' kitchen.Â
It'd been three hours. It was nearing midnight as you stood in front of the elevator, the cold December air biting at your exposed legs. You'd gone to a late dinner with your friend Aeri, and you'd be lying to yourself if you didn't admit that her encouragement is what got you into this predicament.
The elevator dings, revealing a young girl and her dog attempting to step out. You give her a soft smile, earning a nod and a have a good night as you step in. You press the button to the third floor, bouncing on your heels as the elevator starts moving. This could be the worst fuck of your life and you won't even know until after, or even during. What if it's the best fuck of your life and then you're just forced to be around him as his employer rather than a potential fuck buddy or even worse, a girlfriend? "Get it together, Y/N." You mutter to yourself, hearing the elevator ding as you reach the third floor. You step out, turning to the right and walking past three doors, before standing in front of his apartment. His doormat is that of a frat boy's â Please Don't Do Coke In Our Bathroom.
You snort, before knocking on the door softly. You hear rustling, and the lowering of a TV before the pitter-patter of dog feet. You hear him sigh as he unlocks the door, his face appearing before you as he opens it. He looks surprised.
"Y/N, what a pleasure." He speaks smoothly, and you roll your eyes. "It's cold, invite me in." You cross your arms across your chest, making him smile as he steps to the side. You walk in, shivering as you carefully step out of your heels. You squat to pet his dog, but she disappears behind his legs. You pout at him, and he just snorts. "She's shy."
"It's fucking freezing outside, Hoon." Your teeth chatter as he closes the door, taking your scarf as you hand it to him. "Well, you're barely dressed. I assume it would be cold when you're half naked." "Did you want me to wear layers and make this take ten times as long? Be serious." You huff, sliding your coat off. Granted, you'd put this dress on with the idea of going to a bar after dinner and posting thirst traps on your story for Heeseung to see and yearn forâŚ
Which is shitty of you to appear in Sunghoon's apartment after thinking that way.
"I don't think you wore this for me, Y/N. You were at dinner with Aeri." He rolls his eyes, and you forget he also has your Instagram. "Man, just take the win. Do you wanna fuck me or not?"
He shrugs, "Do you want me to?" "You wouldn't have offered and I wouldn't have shown up if the answer to either of those questions was no." You say pointedly, and he clicks his tongue. "I guess you're right." "I usually am." You roll your eyes, making him laugh. "Here, have a seat." "What, are you gonna wine and dine me?" You tease, and he smirks, disappearing into his kitchen. "Could say that." You take a seat on his couch, looking around the apartment. He's decorated in a very Sunghoon  way â lots of black decorations and shelving on the exposed brick, an array of books on a shelf to the left of his desk and a record player. You look at his coffee table, the fashion magazines and editorials stacked high.
"You always snoop through people's things?" His voice rings behind you as he holds two glasses and a bottle of wine you're sure you've seen only in your father's reserve. You huff, "Well you leave me here to entertain myself, I'm bound to look around." "Valid. Come on." He tilts his head for you to follow him, your cheeks aflame as you do just that. He leads you down to his bedroom, a large bed with a black duvet in the middle of the room. More books, a few incense candles, a few figurines in the corner of his room. "I like what you've done with the place." "Thanks, it only took fucking forever to figure out what I wanted to do. I think the exposed brick makes for a bigger headache than those home bloggers make it out to be."Â
It makes you feel at ease, how easy conversation can be with Sunghoon. He doesn't make anything feel inorganic, but he also doesn't talk more than necessary in order to get his point across.
"How long were you with that guy, anyway? Here, put this on." He holds out a pair of sweatpants, which you take with a quizzical look. "Three years. Uh, Hoon, the point is to be naked here, not put on more clothes." "Is that how it was with him? You'd just show up and strip?" He rolls his eyes, digging a shirt out of his dresser for you. You feel your cheeks warm as he hands it to you, before giving you a glance. "Was it?" "...Kind of." You look at your feet, and he sighs. "Yeah, wellâŚI don't play that. Do you need help getting your dress off?" "Oh, yeah. Just the zipper." You turn, pulling your hair to the front. You feel his fingers graze your back, before he tugs the zipper down in one go. He snaps your bra strap playfully, "We can lose this, though." "Yah!" You swat his hand away, making him laugh as he turns away. "Do you want to watch something or just talk?" "We can watch something, whatever is fine. Just nothing scary, my room is spooky at night." You shudder as you undo your bra, folding it in your hand before tugging the shirt over your head. "Oh, do you intend on driving home after?" "Did you want me to stay?" Your words sound a bit bitter, and that only makes Sunghoon frown as he scours the selection on HBO from his bed. "Dude, the more things you say, the more scummy I realize this guy was to you. Next thing you know you'll tell me he never went down on you." You freeze, and Sunghoon gapes at you as you turn around, pulling the shirt down your torso. "Y/N, you've got to be kidding me." "No, he did a few times, I swear!" You try to defend him, but Sunghoon only scoffs out a laugh. "That's fucking insane. Like, actually insane." "Hoon, you're embarrassing me." You whine, and he only blinks. "Why would you be embarrassed that he didn't wanna eat you out? That in itself is embarrassing for him. Real men eat pussy, and they eat it with gusto." "Shut up." You cover your face with your hands as you hear him sigh. "I'm just saying. Now, come on. Either put the pants on or lie the hell down." You huff, shoving the pair of sweats on before joining him on his bed. This is normal, friends fuck all the time.
Except you and Sunghoon are not friends.
You must've spaced out, because the feeling of Sunghoon squeezing your knee makes you jolt. "What are you thinking about?" "Nothing." You lie, shaking your head. He hums, turning his attention to the random movie on the television. "You're a bad liar, you know?" "Am not." Scoffing, you turn to face him. Your knees hit his outer thigh as you turn, and he gives you a lazy smile. "You are. You were staring off into space and chewing on your cheek for like, five minutes. What's up?" You scrunch your nose, looking down at your hands as he tilts his head. "You can tell me, you know. I don't judge." "Don't you, though? I mean, I'm here after you absolutely dogged on my ex earlier." You snort, and he smiles. "I'm judging your ex, not you. Well, not right now at least. I will always dislike the fact that you think you deserved that treatment, let alone from a guy who probably couldn't even make you cum." Your eyes snap to his, shock across your face as he pinches the bridge of his nose with a sigh. "Babe, come on." "He was nice!" You whine, and Sunghoon just laughs in disbelief. "Don't laugh! It's not funny!" Your lip is jutted out in a pout, before Sunghoon maneuvers you onto his lap. He makes you move up closer, your ass resting high on his thighs. "He really didn't make you finish?" You groan, adjusting yourself to sit comfortably. "I mean, he did a few times. Just not as often as I would've liked. I don't want to talk about him." You rub your temples, Sunghoon's hands finding home on your hips. "Okay, we don't have to. Tell me what you like." "What I like?" You repeat, and he nods. "Yeah. LikeâŚpositions. Any kinks, anything I should know to make this the best experience possible."
"...Does it matter?" Your voice is meek, and he rolls his eyes. "Yes, it matters. I want you to feel good. If you don't know, I can figure it out. You just have to trust me." You feel your chest warm at his words, and you glance at his face as he speaks again. "We can go as slow as you want, this is about you." "But what about you?" You toy with the hem of your shirt, and he smiles. "I'll enjoy myself either way, don't worry about me." His hands squeeze your hips gently as he looks down at you. "You okay?" "I'm nervous." You mumble, looking away as he coos. "Baby, you don't need to be nervous. It's just me." His hand comes to hold your jaw gently, making you face him. He squeezes your cheeks gently, making your lips pucker.
"You're so pretty." He smiles as he compliments you, making you roll your eyes in embarrassment. "Stop." "Why? You are. Pretty little thing." He's teasing you, your hands now holding onto his wrist as he inches closer. "Should I kiss you?" "Yes." Your reply is more of a breath, and he chuckles. "Seriously, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you, promise. Unless you're into that."
"Kiss me already." You groan, making him roll his eyes before closing the gap between you. His lips are soft and taste like cherry Chapstick. His hand lets go of your face, moving slightly down to the base of your neck. Your own hands move to fist his shirt as his teeth nip at your lower lip, a whimper from your throat making him move you impossibly higher on his lap. His other hand moves to the nape of your neck, tangling in your hair to hold you steady as his tongue slips into your mouth.Â
"You'll stay the night, right?" He pulls away from your lips, eyes searching your face for any sign of hesitation. You nod as best as you can with his hand in your hair, "Yeah. If you want me to." "I want you to." He whispers, before letting go of your hair. "Can we take this off?" He tugs at the shirt he gave you, and you move to tug it over your head. He lets you, watching the way your hair cascades down your back. His hands find home on your waist, his thumbs barely grazing the underside of your breasts as you look back at him, flinging the shirt somewhere behind you.
He doesn't say anything, only meeting your lips in a kiss. It's softer this time, but your tongue finds its way into his mouth gently. He sucks on it, hearing a low moan from you as your hips cant against his. "Sorry."Â
"No, don't be." He shakes his head, pressing chaste kisses to your lips. "Use me however you want, baby. That's what I'm here for."Â
"Butâ" "This is about you. Just let go." He meets your lips once more, kissing you deeply as his hands grip your hips tightly. He moves you against his hardening cock slowly, setting a gentle pace for you. You follow his lead, rutting against him as his hands move upward before you grab them and place them on your chest. He groans lowly into your mouth, thumbs grazing over your pebbled nipples as he drags his lips down your jaw, your soft whimpers filling the air as his teeth nip at your neck.
"S'fucking gorgeous." He murmurs against your skin, tracing his tongue down the gentle slope of your neck, a shudder running down your spine as he kisses down your chest. "Can I?" His doe eyes peer up at you though shaggy bangs, and you nod quickly. Your fingers card through his hair as his tongue flattens against your nipple as you groan.
"Feel good?" He mumbles against your skin. You only breathe out shakily as you nod, your lip bitten between your teeth as he nips and sucks his way across your chest, your nipples glistening with his spit. He scrapes his teeth against one gently, earning a guttural groan from your lips as he kisses up your chest. "Wanna taste you, angel. Can I?" Your pupils are blown as you look down at him, your fingers pushing his hair back as his hands dip below the sweatpants you're wearing. "Can I?" "Okay." Your voice is slightly raspy with lust, and he smiles softly before pressing a kiss to your lips. "We can stop anytime, just say the word."Â
You nod, moving off his lap. He lays you back on his pillows, kissing your lips softly before trailing down your body. "So beautiful, baby. Can't get enough of you." He kisses down your stomach, before his teeth catch on the waistband of the sweatpants you're wearing. He bites down carefully, pulling them down your legs as you cover your face with a whine. "Something wrong?" He calls, pulling them off your ankles and flinging them to the ground.
"No." You respond weakly, and he smirks as his fingers land on your thighs, pulling you closer to him. "You're lying." "You're just hot, okay?" You peek at him through your fingers, seeing him shake his head as he snaps the waistband of your underwear against your skin. You jolt as he smiles, before sinking to his stomach and spreading your legs. You hear a soft whisper of shit from his lips. "Sorry? Is something wrong?"
You try to move away, only for Sunghoon to hold your hips down. "You're fucking soaked, doll. Holy shit."Â
He doesn't give you a chance to respond, opting to press his face against the sticky fabric of your ruined underwear and inhale deeply, a whine from his throat hitting your ears as he noses at the fabric. "You're so fucking hot."
You feel his tongue before you reply, the underwear a useless attempt at a barrier as he finds your clit easily. Your thighs tense around his head, his preening at the taste of you just through the fabric is enough to make him cum in his pants. "HoonâŚ" You mewl, your fingers tugging at his hair to get his attention. He only hums in response.
"Take them off." Your whine is loud, and he hastily pulls your underwear down your plush thighs, throwing it over his shoulder as he dives back in, tongue lapping at your wet cunt like a man starved. You're a moaning mess as his pouty lips wrap around your clit, sucking gently as he pushes your thighs open further, working two fingers inside you carefully. He groans at the way you clench around them so tightly, your walls so warm and wet as he curls them into you.
"Taste so sweet, pretty. Would never give this up, ever." He murmurs against your clit, pressing wet kisses to it. You can't even respond, your eyes screwed shut as you cant your hips against his mouth harshly. "That's it, baby. Come on, give it to me." He's whining against your pussy, latching his lips to your clit as your thighs begin to tremble.
"H-Hold my hand." You mumble, and Sunghoon immediately laces his free hand with yours. "Need you to cum on my tongue, beautiful." His fingers find that spongy spot, making your soft belly cave in as your thighs close around his head. A choked moan leaves your lips as you coat his tongue and lips in your orgasm, your body trembling beneath him as you try to push his head away from you. "S'too much, Hoonie-" "One more, baby. You can give me one more." He bullies his shoulders through your thighs, moving to hover over you. He presses his wet lips to yours, your tongue attempting to collect any taste of you off of him. He lets you deepen the kiss, his hand snaking between your legs to rub teasing circles into your clit. Your mouth falls slack, your nails digging into his bicep. "One more, baby. Wanna feel you around me." "O-Okay."Â
He reaches over you to his nightstand, pulling the drawer open to find an empty box of condoms. "Fuck, wait. I thinkâ" "Want it raw." You mumble, eyes closed as your hands run under his shirt, fingers tracing circles into his softly chiseled abdomen. His eyes are wide, his hand coming to your face, stroking it gently. "Look at me. Are you sure?"
"Positive. Want it, Hoonie. Wanna feel full." You barely open your eyes as you nod, turning your head slightly to kiss his palm. He shivers slightly, closing his eyes to compose himself as he nods. "O-Okay. Alright." He straightens, pulling his shirt over his head and quickly pushing his sweats down. You don't bother to look down, knowing in your heart the stretch will be worth a thousand viewings. He pulls you to the edge of the bed by your thighs, carefully tucking a pillow under your hips as he rests your leg on his chest. He kisses your ankle softly, before running the leaking tip of his cock through your wet folds. He nearly buckles, the warmth almost debilitating as he eased himself into you. Your mewl is so soft he almost misses it, his eyes darting to your face as he slowly sheaths himself inside you, biting his lip so hard he's sure he'll draw blood. Your lips are so swollen from the kissing and biting that he can't help but lean over and kiss you gently, burying himself to the hilt inside you. Your soft whisper of fuck is against his lips. "Move, Hoon." "You gotta give me a second, baby." He whines into your neck, making you clench around him. "Fuck, fuck don't do that." His hips jerk involuntarily, earning a choked moan from you as your nails dig into his shoulder. He straightens himself, figuring if he's going to cum fast, he'd better make it worth your while. He pulls out almost entirely, pushing your thighs to your chest as he bullies his cock back into you. Your moans are so loud he's lost in them, your chants of yes, yes, right there so overwhelming for him as he tries his hardest to stave off his own orgasm.
"Feel so fucking good, baby. Shit." He whimpers into the air, his grip on your thighs bruising as you mewl beneath him, your hands finding his wrists. "Kiss me, Hoonie. Wan' a kiss.." He leans forward, the kiss a mess of teeth and tongue as he bottoms out inside you repeatedly. His tip is bullying your sweet spot relentlessly, making you whine into his mouth. "Want you to cum in me." You whisper, and he almost stops as the words hit his ears but your nails drag down his back. "Want you to fill me up, Hoonie. Please."
"Anything you want, fuck. I'll give you anything, baby." His voice is choked as he trails his lips down your neck, feeling your cunt flutter around him in that oh-so-familiar way. "Gonna cum for me? Gonna cream all over this dick?" You only whimper in response, your teeth sinking softly into his shoulder. He feels himself spill inside you at the sensation, a deep groan from his soul as you cum right after. He doesn't stop working the two of you through it, his hips bordering the two of you into overstimulation as you claw at him.
He feels his skin sticky as he rests his forehead on your shoulder, your fingers now flat against the muscle of his back as you breathe in deeply. You shift slightly beneath him, before patting his shoulder. "I don'tâŚI can't get up, I don't think. I can't feel my legs." You rasp, and he chuckles into your skin.
"Yeah, that's usually what's supposed to happen." He replies smugly, earning a sharp smack from your hand in the middle of his back. "Ouch! What the hell!" "I told you to stop making fun of me!" You huff, and he moves to look at you. "I'm not! Did I not just give you two mind blowing orgasms?"
"I wouldn't say mindblowingâ" He rolls his eyes as he covers your mouth. "I made you cum, which was the goal. Was it not?" "No, the goal was to get over my ex." You say, muffled by the palm of his hand. He ponders a bit, before looking down at you intently. "Well, are you?" You feel your cheeks flush as you look away. "Maybe. Might need to go again, don't know. Not fully convinced." "Not fully convinced, she says." He removes his hand from your mouth as he teases you gently, and you roll your eyes. "Okay, fine. You're good, you got me." You admit tiredly, and he smiles.
"For how long?" "What?" You look up at him, and he shrugs. "How long do I have you?" You let your eyes scan his face as he looks down at you with curiosity in his eyes. You scoff, an amused tone to your voice. "You like me." "Obviously." He rolls his eyes, "Otherwise I wouldn't have offered." "You sly little minx. Luring me in here with the premise of getting me over my ex, knowing I'm on the rebound." You poke his chest, and he scoffs. "Clearly, you like me too. Or else you could've absolutely dodged my offer." "Or maybe I think you're hot and wouldn't mind seeing you outside of the cute little necklaces my sister makes you wear." You tease, and he shrugs. "I'll take what I can get. Either way, do you feel better? Less thoughts about that idiot, more good feelings?" You nod, sitting up on your elbows. "Let me take you to dinner, Hoon." He blinks at you, before glancing at the clock on his nightstand. "It's two in the morning, babe." "Not right now. Later. After you're done babysitting." You say, and he raises his brows. "Are you sure?" "I wouldn't offer if I didn't want to." Your tone is pointed, and he scoffs. "You want me so fucking bad." "In your dreams. Get off me, I'm all sticky."
He does just that, and takes the most gentle care of you. He lets you lean against him in the shower, he shampoos your hair and steals kisses when you least expect it. He changes his sheets while you try to sit comfortably in his desk chair, complaining of sore hips and thighs as he smirks to himself. "So much for a rebound, huh?" He murmurs into your hair as you snuggle into his side, making you snort. "Go to sleep, Sunghoon. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, babe."
"Not your babe, Hoon."
"Not yet."

IS IT CASUAL NOW?
pairing: vi x fem!reader word count: 14.6k summary: you and vi are both tired of complicated relationships so try the whole friends-with-benefits thing....and maybe forget the whole point of your arrangement in the first place. warning: lesbian situationships (there is so much angst and yearning), brief mention of (internalized) homophobia and struggles with addiction....but mostly cheesy domestic fluff and smut [oral (vi receiving), fingering (both receiving), thigh riding, slight bondage play, switch!vi has my heart] (18+) ! a/n: merry (belated oops) xmas girls and gays <33 i've probably spent way too much time on this but it's my BABY....kinda based on leighton and alicia's plotline in s1 of sex lives of college girls and ofc casual by chappell roan (there are many other chappell references throughout too hehe). also yes i made a mini playlist that consists of the songs that i think reflect this fic's sun, moon, and rising signs....pls enjoy and happy holidays !!!
âŞ: "angel baby" by troye sivan (sun); "pretty girl" by hayley kiyoko (moon); "casual" by chappell roan (rising)

ânot even one week into the new academic year, violet rose atlas, captain of the varsity soccer team, has been suspended from gameplay due to recent unsportsman-like behavior, sentenced to 100 hours of community service, and banned from the local lesbian bar.âÂ
mel removes her eyes from the screen to raise an eyebrow at you. you just shrug and take a sip of your coffee. you glance over at the clock on the wall.Â
11:09am.Â
âto top it all off, sheâs late,â you declare, trying your best to hide the anticipation simmering in your stomach.
âwhatâs your deal, anyways? you totally flirt with her whenever sheâs at the bar. not even we get that good of service,â gert points out. theyâre searching through a stack of cdâs and cassette tapes for something to play.Â
âthat was before.âÂ
you walk over to sit next to gert, taking it upon yourself to choose the music. you settle on jagged little pill; alanis morrissetteâs lush voice is a welcomed addition to your conversation.
âour funding is at risk,â you explain. âitâs like the dean assigned her to us because she knew it would end terribly and the board would have an excuse to finally cut us loose.âÂ
âif they need an excuse, theyâll find one,â gert grumbles.
you shrug. âi just think violet is bad news, which is something iâd prefer we avoid..â
âthe article does say that she punched maddie nolan in the face during an exhibition game against the piltover knights.â
âsee? bad news. literally.â
âwell, i think we lucked out,â sky gushes, though her focus remains on finishing her current project. sheâs crocheting so fast that you only catch glimpses of her sparkly pink fingernails. youâre sure sheâll be done with this blanket before violet shows up. if she even bothers to show up. âthe yellowjackets mightâve lost their captain, but we get to spend quality time with the hottest butch on campus.â
âwhatever,â you sigh, though you donât disagree with that description. you check the clock again â 11:11am â and settle against the worn couch. âsince we have the time â mel, why donât you read our horoscopes? iâm itching to see what the universe has in store for us today.âÂ
âââââ âââ ââââââ
vi spent the better part of last night crying and getting wasted in her bathtub with cheap dye burning into her scalp.Â
she just couldnât stand the memory of caitlyn kirammanâs perfectly manicured nails running through her formerly pink locks as they kissed, tugging on viâs hair to bring her closer â
enough. fucking pull yourself together.Â
caitâs moved on, that much is clear, with someone more like her. someone whose last name is on buildings all around the university of piltoverâs campus.
so far, no amount of bar fights or red cards or late nights in some random girlâs bed seem to mend the heart that caitlyn shattered to pieces, but vi doesnât give up easy.
soon enough, sheâll be back on the field, leading the yellowjackets to victory at nationals; sheâll finish all her classes, graduate with honors and have a great plan for an even greater future; all while having amazing, mind-blowing sex that wonât lead to serious heartbreak.
relationships are overrated, anyways.Â
the first step in this plan: spending 100 hours with a bunch of angry, bra-burning lesbians.
maybe vi will fit right in.
so, vi walks into her community service assignment with a wicked migraine and hands that look like lady macbeth plotted to murder an oil spill, but with her usual confident swagger nonetheless, as conversation echoes down the hallway.
âaccording to your rising, there will be a much needed spark in your romantic life. my guess is a fire sign is gonna sweep you off your feet.â
another voice chimes in, a gentle rumble. âcould that be your sweet jules?âÂ
âiâve never asked about her chart,â an achingly familiar voice replies. it brings back memories of dizzying lights and strong whiskey coursing through her blood, but something else, too. a sky full of stars and too-sweet alcohol on her tongue. âpaula was a fire sign, though, and that blew up in my face.â
âpaula was a walking red flag.â
âyeah, well, apparently redâs my favorite color.â
âmaybe that was just the heartbreak you needed to bring passion back into your life. do you feel that with jules?â
âi donât know â maybe? we havenât had sex yet.âÂ
âpassion isnât just about sex, you know ââ
âgert, i love you, but i cannot handle a sex therapy session right now.â
someone else giggles, bright and bubbly. âhm, i wonder what sign our pink-haired hottie is.âÂ
vi clears her throat to announce her arrival, leaning against the doorway.
everyone turns to look at her then, with varying degrees of shock, and vi feels like sheâs just walked into an after midnight roommate vent session.
she isnât sure what she expected the space to look like, but zaun universityâs womenâs centre is well-lived in, defined by a sort of organized chaos. each wall is covered in posters and collages, multicolored flags and fairy lights; thereâs a shelf in the corner with assorted trinkets and books piled high, a table next to it with baskets of condoms, pads, and tampons and informational pamphlets, and a door in the opposite corner, slightly ajar. a vintage boombox placed on the coffee table plays 90s alt rock, circled by mismatched seating with patterned blankets and brightly colored pillows strewn about.
someone with dark lipstick and an eyebrow piercing is drawing on their converse; a dark brunette wearing glasses is draping a blanket over the arm of a couch; another person is scrolling on their laptop, a gold necklace glittering on their collarbones.Â
viâs attention is stuck on you, though, the origin of the aforementioned familiar voice: the very hot bartender from sapphoâs, where vi happened to be kicked out of not even 72 hours prior.Â
youâre wearing a vintage wonder woman t-shirt tucked into faded blue jeans with a carabiner clipped to a belt loop. the sleeves of your shirt are rolled up, displaying your array of tattoos â viâs already decided that her favorites are joan of arc holding her sword, a pomegranate thatâs been cracked open, and lyrics from bikini killâs ârebel girlâ (which admittedly, vi had to look up when she first saw). itâs everything viâs booze-soaked brain had apparently memorized after many nights of staring at you across the bar counter, licking up whatever honeyed flirtations youâd spill from your lips. vi always noticed your hands, too: the many rings youâve stacked on your fingers, the lavender sprig sprouting from your middle finger and venus symbol etched onto your wrist, the nails that are always clipped short and painted black.Â
one of those nails is tapping anxiously on your coffee mug, which has a picture of hayley kiyoko as lesbian jesus.
âpink-haired hottie, reporting for duty. though, i might need a new nickname.â vi grins; you roll your eyes. âiâm an aries, by the way.â
âgood to know.â the brunette winks not-so-subtly in your direction before walking towards vi and extending a hand, gold bangles clinking together at the motion. âiâm sky, she/her. we had electromagnetic theory together last spring. itâs lovely to officially meet you.â
vi makes a big show of leaning down and kissing skyâs hand.
ânice to meet you, too, sweetheart.â
âsuch a gentleman,â sky giggles and leads vi to the patchwork couch. she curls up like a cat, and vi follows suit â the couch is cloud soft, and vi tries not to sink into the cushions. âiâm our supplies and communications coordinator.â she turns away from vi to look around the room. âokay, thatâs my intro. whoâs next?â
the person with an eyebrow piercing nods at vi, a sort of effortless greeting. âgert, they/them.â they snap the sharpie shut after writing âthe future is intersectionalâ on the tip of their toe. âi curate and design our newsletter, the black rose. iâm also in a band ââ
âthe sirens of zaun. yeah, i recognize you. youâve played a few gigs at sapphoâs.âÂ
vi looks at you pointedly, and you take this as your cue to disappear behind the door, which appears to lead into some sort of office.
gert seems pleased, though. âthen you might also recognize our lead singerâŚ.â
the person with the gold necklace, who vi does, in fact, vaguely recognize but canât quite name, closes their laptop and waves at vi. âiâm mel. pronouns: she/her. i mostly deal with the finances around here. and, from what i understand, youâre already well acquainted with our fearless leader ââ
mel is cut off by the sound of her phone alarm.Â
âshit â itâs already 11:30. our set at campus radio starts soon.â mel gestures at gert. gert picks up the bright red guitar case behind them and secures it around their shoulder as mel packs up her leather satchel.Â
âdamn, i gotta get to class, too. the space-time continuum waits for no one.â sky gets up and gathers her things, too, stuffing yarn into a fruit-printed tote bag. âit was nice meeting you though.â she pats viâs head affectionately before throwing out a loud: âsee ya later, boss!â
mel and gert offer similar farewells, and you shout goodbye from the other room before the three of them are out the door. vi expects you to reappear a few moments later; when you donât, she ventures into the office.
itâs smaller, but just as decorated as the lounge space. thereâs a desk that seems to be more storage than actual use, littered with piles of books and old copies of the black rose. youâre sitting on a fluffy rainbow carpet that looks like every member of sesame street stitched together, writing something in a sticker-covered notebook.Â
âso, violet ââ
âviâs fine,â she tells you. she decides to sit on the floor next to you rather than the zebra striped chaise lounge.
you nod, rip a page out of your notebook, and hand it to vi. thereâs something a bit too intimate about knowing what your handwriting looks like before even knowing your name.Â
âthis is a run down of everything youâll need to know, but real quick: we do feminist film fridays and trivia tuesdays on alternating weeks; our radical reads book club meets once a month, along with our slam poetry group, and we have a bunch of other events in between â workshops, art builds, discussion groups, and so on. sky keeps everything in the centre stocked, and occasionally the rest of us will pitch in when organizing a charity drive. our newsletter publishes the third wednesday of every month â gert puts it together, but we print in pairs since it could be a lot of work for one person. we have team meetings once a week to share updates, make sure weâre all on the same page, stuff like that. any questions?âÂ
âwow, okay. thatâs a lot.â
you smile. âiâm sure youâll be able to keep up, varsity.âÂ
âsoâŚ.where do i fit in?âÂ
âthat depends on you, really,â you tap your glitter gel pen on your notebook, thinking. âlike, iâm assuming youâre not well versed in feminist literature.â
vi puffs out her chest. âbased on what assumptions? iâm not a dumb jock.â
âyeah, i know youâve made the dean list ever since your freshman year.âÂ
vi raises an eyebrow. âkeeping tabs on me, wonder woman?â she teases.Â
you laugh. âdonât flatter yourself. skyâs the one who mentioned it to me. so, unless you mean your very large, unpaid tab at sapphoâs...â
âthe bar i was kicked out of, you mean.â
âwell, yeah, because you ââ you take a deep breath. ânot the point. anyways, we donât have a complete schedule for book club, so you can maybe take the lead on one of our meetings. do you have a favorite author?âÂ
vi smiles at you sheepishly. âahâŚ..you got me there.â
âthought so,â you smirk and vi covers her blush. âif youâre curious, this bridge called my back is a good place to start. oh, and audre lorde is a classic and a personal favoriteâŚ..â you pause when you catch vi staring at you. she wants you to keep talking, to appreciate the way your eyes light up so enthusiastically, but you blink away, and a veil of professionalism falls back onto you. âsorry. anyways, weâre having trivia tomorrow â would you be able to help us out with that?
vi nods. âsure.â
âsweet.â you check your phone. âiâve got a coffee date, so i should get going.â
âwait â you never told me your name, wonder woman.â
âwell, itâs not diana prince,â you quip before finally introducing yourself.Â
ânice to finally put a name to the face.â vi winks at you, standing up. she extends a hand to guide you up. your hand is cold against her skin, your metal rings even colder.
âiâll see you around, varsity.â before youâre out the door, you turn back around. âoh, and vi?â
âyeah?â
âdonât be late.â
âââââ âââ ââââââ
you had stepped away for a quick smoke break â a habit you knew you had to kick â but youâre so fucking drained and itâs only wednesday.Â
you were up all night bickering with your girlfriend. it started with her admitting that she really doesnât want to meet your friends, which transitioned into her asking you to not talk to anyone about her or your relationship, which prompted you to make a (maybe slightly insensitive) comment about how sheâs welcome to stay in the closet but has no right to push you back in.Â
needless to say, you did not get any sleep.
youâre about to walk outside, and finally get a moment of peace, when your phone rings. itâs your sibling, and the fact that theyâre calling instead of texting tells you that this conversation is about to be (A) exhausting, (B) infuriating, or (C) both.
the correct answer is C.
itâs the same story over and over again: your dad drinks too much, your mom is absent. it hadnât been this bad when you were growing up, but you suppose youâd been around to ease the damage, or at least step in and take care of your sibling as needed.Â
âjust â take a deep breath. you can come stay with me for the weekend, okay? itâll be good for you to get away from the chaos for a bitâŚ.weâll go apple picking if the weatherâs nice, maybe start working on your halloween costume â whatever you wanna do.â
âyou know, iâm not five anymore,â they mumble, stifling a small laugh along with some tears. âbutâŚokay. that sounds nice.â
you smile to yourself, shoulder pressing against the door. âitâs a plan then. weâll sort out the details later. and, donât worry about mom and dad â iâll take care of it. love you.âÂ
you hang up and exhale as you finally push the door open, happy to finally get one moment to breathe.
except, just as youâre greeted by a crisp breeze on this beautiful late september evening, youâre also greeted by the sight of vi pressing someone against the brick wall, their legs wrapped around her waist as she kisses their neck.
something ignites in your abdomen, familiar after many nights of seeing vi at the bar, charming her way into another womanâs bed. except, itâs definitely not jealousy, this time.
(okay, maybe it is; but only a bit.)
they spring apart upon hearing the door slam closed. you recognize who viâs with â maya, a sophomore whoâs frequently attended womenâs centre events since last year. sheâs always been friendly with the team, but never this friendly.
âoh my gosh, i am so sorry!â
âyou donât have to apologize,â you tell her sincerely. her cheeks are flushed, and sheâs busy smoothing down her skirt, clearly trying to distance herself from vi, whoâs leaning against the wall nonchalantly. âi just need to talk to violet, so do you mind giving us a sec?â
you wait until maya disappears inside to cross your arms and glare at vi.
âso, itâs violet now, huh?â she teases, wiping red lipstick off her smirk.
âyou were supposed to be helping facilitate this workshop,â you note.Â
âwell, it is a queer sex ed workshop.â vi rolls her eyes. âi was giving maya a hands-on experience.â
you grit your teeth together. âand you just had to do that now? like you just had to go down on that third year during trivia last week?â
âwell, see, i donât have a ton of free time, and since iâm not allowed at the local lesbian barâŚ.â she trails off, looking at you pointedly. âiâve had to resort to multi-tasking.â
âmulti-tasking.â you let an exhausted, bitter laugh slip from your lips. âyouâve showed up late to every single event in the past few weeks, and once youâre there, youâre either on your laptop, getting drunk, or hooking up with someone. tell me, violet, as captain of the yellowjackets â if someone on your team was acting like this, what would you do?â
vi narrows her eyes at you, like she canât believe what youâre asking, and admits, âiâd call them out, tell them to do better.â
âright. and if they kept giving you empty promise after empty promise? youâd have to do something more drastic, even if you didnât want to, yeah?â
no response.
shaking your head, you take out a cigarette. thereâs only silence when you flick the lighter open and light it between your lips. you inhale deeply, letting the smoke enter your lungs, exhale slowly, and decide: âiâm gonna ask the dean to reassign you.â
âfine by me,â vi scoffs, but you swear that something close to disappointment flashes across her face. âclearly, this isnât working out.â
âclearly.â you take another drag of your cigarette, and as vi walks back inside, you canât help but try to get under her skin. youâve had a bad week, between family drama and turbulence in your relationship with jules, and youâre just sick of people not giving a shit. âthe yearâs already started, so i doubt thereâs something available. which means youâll remain on academic probation until spring.â
and, okay â you do get some twisted satisfaction in how that makes vi stop in her tracks. youâre leaning against the wall, and she strides over to stand in front of you, her jaw and fists clenched.
âiâll miss the whole tournament.â
you shrug, and blow smoke in her face. âiâve given you plenty of chances.â
âbut the team needs me ââ
âyou should have thought of that before you fucked up, varsity,â you snap. viâs eyes widen; youâre usually more level-headed. âyouâre cocky, irresponsible â â
âi lost my scholarship,â vi blurts out, prompting you to pause, the cigarette millimeters from your lips.Â
you blink at her, blood still roaring in your ears.
âiâŚdonât know why thatâs relevant.â
vi just sighs, so deeply that you feel it in your bones. you havenât seen this side of her before â no flirtatious smile, no overconfident posture. instead, she slips to the ground, knees pressed to her chest. feeling a bit guilty for pushing her buttons, you slide down next to her. you offer her the cigarette, but she shakes her head.
âiiâm going through a shitty breakup. iâve been lashing out, and i lost my scholarship. i havenât asked my parents for money, because the last thing i want is for them to worry about me. so, i started picking up these odd jobs to make ends meet, and the hours are a bit crazy so between school and practice and â fuck, thereâs also shit going on with my sister that i wonât even get into now, but itâs a lot â and i also need to do this because i let my team down and i need to be there for them, whatever it takes, and iâm just so fucking ââ
âexhausted, yeah.âÂ
you can see more clearly now â the slump in her shoulders, the shadows underneath her eyes; you see her more clearly. you realize that you might have more in common with violet rose atlas than you initially thought.
âso the laptop ââ
âfinishing assignments.â
âthe drinking?â
vi juts her chin out at your smouldering cigarette. âwe all have our vices.â
âand the sex?â
her lips curl into a sheepish grin, and she shrugs. âwe all need to relieve stress.â
you clear your throat, blinking away from her gaze and trying to ignore how you can feel warmth radiating from her body, so close to yours. âright.â
vi runs her hand through her tar-black hair. that should have been your first hint â nothing says lesbian breakup more than terribly dyed hair and questionable decisions.Â
âlook, i know i canât do everything, but i have to, and iâm still trying to figure out how.â
âwellâŚ.as far as excuses go, itâs not the worst,â you admit. âthanks for telling me. i know that couldnât have been easy.â you take a deep breath and get to your feet. âi stand by what i said earlier, though â this isnât working out. you just canât tell us that youâll be helpful and not follow through. it means a lot, to a lot of people, that thereâs a space like this on campus. mel, gert, skyâ they all work so hard to make that happen, and thatâs something i need to protect. iâm sorry.â
âwait.â vi grabs your wrist before you can leave. âiâm sorry. really, i am. i promise to do better.â
âyouâve made that promise before,â you point out. âwhy should i believe this time will be different?â
âbecauseâŚyouâre right. iâve been too caught up in myself, in what i need, in what my team needs. i can see that you really care about your team, though, and i should have respected that. theyâre â youâre â amazing, everything that you do to make people feel safe and heard and loved. iâm sorry for taking that for granted.â
wow. okay.Â
you did not expect that. youâre hoping that vi canât feel your pulse quicken at her words, but youâre glad that sheâs holding on to you, keeping you steady.
âyeah, wellâŚflatteryâs not gonna get you far.â you clear your throat. âbut, youâre obviously going through a lot right now, and it can drive you crazy, feeling like youâre the one who ââ
âhas to keep everything together,â vi finishes, sliding to the ground once more. you follow. âseems like iâm cracking under pressure, this time. fucking everything up.â
âyouâve got a reckless streak.â
âmust be the aries in me,â she laughs, softly. âapparently itâs my Ieast attractive quality. along with my stubbornness and selfishness.â
âwell, i donât think thatâs the whole picture,â you assure her. vi looks at you incredulously. âi wonât lie and say that your actions arenâtâŚ.thoughtless sometimes. youâre more self-centred than selfishââ
âhey!âÂ
âbut you obviously feel some sense of responsibility, for your team, your family, for what you think is right. hell â the reason my boss asked me to kick you out is because you started a bar fight with that frat boy who was insisting he had the right dick to set lesbians straight.â
vi scoffs. âasshole.â
âi was about to throw him out, but you beat me to the punch. literally.â you nudge your shoulder against viâs, and she chuckles. âand, yeah, youâre stubborn, which can be annoying, but it also means that youâd never give up, that youâre willing to keep trying despite the odds, soâŚ.âÂ
âsoâŚ.?â
viâs looking at you with the widest, softest eyes. fuck, you never expected her to be this gentle, so much so that it you want to melt to her every need.Â
âiâm hoping third timeâs the charm, varsity.â
vi smiles, the most sincere one sheâs probably ever given you, and the scar on her lip stretches; for all your talk about responsibility, thereâs a part of you whoâd risk pushing your already tenuous relationship with your girlfriend to its breaking point just so you could kiss vi, guilt-free, just once. maybe you have a bit of a reckless streak, too.
âthanks, wonder woman. you wonât regret it.â
yeah. you kind of already do.
âââââ âââ ââââââ
vi would never admit it, but one reason she fought to keep her community service assignment here is because she wanted to keep seeing you.Â
she likes getting under your skin, seeing those pretty eyes roll whenever she strides in late for a meeting, that kissable jaw clench any time you catch her tangled up with someone else.Â
it almost makes up for all those nights at sapphoâs youâd spent flirting back and forth, some sort of unspoken agreement between you to never go further.
sometimes, itâs just nice to have a crush in your back pocket, to know that theyâll always be there to admire and admire you back while others come and go.
the more time you spend together, though, the more vi realizes that youâre not just a fictional character in her head, in a fantasy she pictures before bed â no, youâre tangible.
vi watches as you bring special tea for gert when their period cramps are particularly painful; she listens to you console mel after another fight with her mother and offer advice to sky when she was hoping to ask out her lab partner. vi notices how you prefer your coffee with a dash of cinnamon; and she learns that you had your first kiss with a girl in your freshman year journalism class, and that your first tattoo was done by the same person. a stick-and-poke star on your ankle.
she can hear your laugh, feel the cool metal of your rings brush against her skin accidentally when youâre squeezing past her in a crowded room, smell your perfume when you hug her goodbye. you have stories and quirks and expectations and opinions that vi subconsciously files away as she gets to know you better.
youâre not just a crush, anymore.Â
youâre a friend.Â
vi likes having you as a friend. really â she does!
youâre a friend who makes viâs heart jump at the sight of your name on her phone. a friend who smirks when vi blushes after you tell her she has the prettiest cheekbones youâve ever seen. a friend who mentions this vibrator that gave you one of the best orgasms youâve ever had, so vi orders the same one and maybe still pictures you before bed, imagining that youâre using it at the same time. except someone else might be next to you.
yeah, viâs pretty sure youâre dating someone, but thatâs something she hasnât gathered enough information on.Â
not that it matters. she wouldnât be interested in anything serious, anyways, after the mindfuck that was her relationship with caitlyn, and the damage sheâs still having to heal from.
though, if that hadnât happened, vi would have never gotten into a fight with maddie nolan, the second striker for the piltover knights, who taunted her during an exhibition game about how caitlyn is so much happier now that she isnât disgracing herself with a filthy zaunite. vi would have never been banned from the first half of the tournament and chewed out by coach sevika for fucking up the yellowjacketsâ chance at nationals.Â
vi would have never been put on academic probation and assigned to 100 hours of community service, either.
she certainly wouldnât have been here, now, in the womenâs centre office close to midnight on a tuesday, folding the most recent issue of the black rose when you walk in.
âoh. hey, v.â you drop down on the zebra-striped couch, your tote bag falling to the ground. âi thought sky was gonna be here tonight.â
vi shakes her head, removing one earbud and letting it dangle from the cord. âsheâs got this huge chem report due tomorrow, had to meet up with viktor to get it done.â
ârightâŚâ you sigh and lie back on the couch, staring up at the ceiling. a few moments pass, and thereâs only your steady breathing. âwhat are you listening to?â
your eyes are closed when vi settles in next to you. itâs a relatively tight fit, but it doesnât seem like either of you particularly care. vi gently places an earbud in your ear.
you snort, opening your eyes. âyou could have just said the cranberries.â
âiâm surprised you recognize them,â vi quips. âitâs not your usual angry girl music.â
âwell, sometimes people surprise you. this is actually one of my favorite songs,â you explain. âitâs in one of my favorite movies, too.â
âyouâve got mail?â
you furrow your brows. âwhen harry met sally.â
vi shakes her head. âno, âdreamsâ is definitely in youâve got mail. but, i agree that when harry met sally is a better movie.â
âyouâve watched nora ephron movies and enjoyed them?â
âwell, sometimes people surprise you,â vi teases. âi can appreciate a good love story as much as the next person.â
you let out a short, airy laugh. you tilt your head and youâre so close to vi that youâre practically exchanging the same breath. your eyes land on her lips for a millisecond, and vi starts to lean in before you sit up abruptly.Â
âi could use some alcohol.â you climb over vi and go to the desk, pull out a half empty bottle of fruit-flavored soju from a drawer. you grab two mugs â the hayley kiyoko one, and another with frida kahlo. you stop short of pouring, looking to vi. she nods.Â
soon enough, youâve got your legs strewn along viâs lap, sipping lychee infused alcohol.Â
âcan i ask you something?â
âanything,â vi answers, squeezing your calf.
âwhyâd you and caitlyn break up?â the question hangs in the air for a second before you add: âif you donât wanna talk about it though, i understand.âÂ
shit. itâs definitely not viâs favorite topic of conversation, butâŚ.
âi think she thought that i was one of the good ones, that regardless of the way i grew up or the blood that coursed through my veins, i would be her perfect little charity case. people would be like: future president kiramman definitely cares about the poor â just look at the broke angry lesbian sheâs turned into her docile wife!âÂ
you suck in a sharp breath. âfuck that.âÂ
âyeah,â vi laughs sadly. âthe worst part is that she wanted me to be vulnerable with her, so i was, because i thought the more i opened up, the more sheâd love me, but, in the endâŚ.i was too messy. i was too much.âÂ
vi hates the lump that starts to build in her throat, the tears that threaten to spill. she cannot cry in front of you â
you grab her hand. your skin is cool against hers, and it eases her quickening heartbeat.
âyouâre not too much, v.â your voice soothes her like honey, trickling down her throat. âit sucks, though, when they ask you to rip your heart out of your chest and get mad at you for bleeding out in front of them.â
âshit, i never thought of it soâŚviscerally, but thatâs exactly what it feels like.â
âwell youâre not a creative writing major,â you quip. âi know it still hurts â trust me, i know â but your heart was never hers if she treated you that badly. you deserve more.âÂ
is it the alcohol messing with her brain, or does it look like you want to kiss her?
fuck.Â
vi clears her throat. âwhyâre you asking?â
you pull your hand away, take a sip of your drink. âjules broke up with me a few days ago.â
youâre single now. good to know.Â
âwhat happened?â
âi caught her kissing someone at a bar. a boy.â you roll your eyes. âmaybe she just wasnât ready, which is fine, but when we had it out, she told me that what we had isnât what romance is supposed to feel or look like, which sucked. especially after being soâŚ.vulnerable with her.â
âyou offered her that bleeding heart of yours, didnât you?âÂ
you click your tongue, pouring some more soju into each mug. âcourse i did, v. and it didnât mean anything in the end. because relationships suck.â
âiâll drink to that.âÂ
you cheers, keeping eye contact.Â
âand you know what?â you take a big, long gulp. âi know that relationships arenât just about sex, but iâve been having to get myself off for months now and sometimes, i just want someone else to ââ
âtake care of you?â
vi sips her drink, watching you mull over her words.
ânot sure if iâd put it like that,â you decide. âi just miss that excitement. when another person wants to discover what makes you feel good, and wanting to learn how to make them feel good, too. i miss having that connection with someone.âÂ
âiâm guessing you didnât have that with jules, then.âÂ
âha! no. and paulaâŚthe girl i dated beforeâŚ.letâs just say, she didnât give a shit whether i felt good, in any sense.â you shift in your seat; vi senses thereâs a story there, but she doesnât push. âhow about future president kiramman â she take care of you?â
vi canât help but laugh. ânah. i mostly took care of her. she sure liked it when i got down on my knees for her.â
you hum.Â
âlucky her.âÂ
you wink at vi, and she chokes on her drink.Â
i would gladly do it for you, if thatâs something you want.
âis that a genuine offer? because, if youâre joking ââ
shit. did vi say that out loud?Â
viâs heart is beating out of her chest, but she sits up straighter to regain some level of composure. she nods.Â
no use in turning back now.
âiâm serious, wonder woman.â
you stare at her. âi really canât have another relationship thatâs just gonna crash and burn.â
âthatâs not what iâm offering. i care about our - our friendship. i care about you.â
you swallow. âi care about you, too.â
âright, and when our friends need help with somethingâŚ.â
âwe help them,â you finish. âso, youâre really just talking about casual sex. right now, on this couch?â
âyes,â vi answers. maybe a bit too quickly. âif thatâs what you want, too.â
âthatâs what i want,â you reply. maybe a bit too quickly, too. âbut none of this one sided bullshit: you do me, i do you.â
vi takes your mug, puts it next to hers on the floor, and repositions your bodies so that sheâs hovering above you, hips set between yours.
âsounds perfect to me.âÂ
you finally, finally kiss and it feels oddlyâŚfamiliar. you taste like lychees and nicotine and cherries, burnt sweetness, and your skin is so fucking soft.
âwait.â you tug on viâs hair and she has to bite back a moan at how fucked out you already look underneath her, all wide-eyed and desperate. âjust so weâre 100% clear: just sex.â
vi nods once. âno strings attached.â
âitâll be casual.âÂ
âweâre not doing the whole relationship thing.â
âpromise?â
vi sticks out her pinky, grinning at you sheepishly. you roll your eyes ever so slightly, but still wrap your pinky around hers.
âpromise.âÂ
so, you take care of each other. no strings attached.
because thatâs what friends are for, right?Â
âââââ âââ ââââââ

âââââ âââ ââââââ
âyou sure about this, v?âÂ
vi hums, looking up at you through hooded eyes. âisnât it every girlâs dream to get tied up by the lasso of truth, wonder woman?â
youâre straddling her, still wearing your red and gold bodysuit underneath blue shorts that youâve decorated with silver stars. your makeshift lasso of truth â really, just some gold rope â sparkles, tying viâs wrists together to the headboard.
the theme of the womenâs centre halloween celebration is always the same â dress up at your favorite female icon â but youâd never seen someone look as good as vi does. she dressed as trinity from the matrix, all tight, black leather and vinyl, showcasing her defined muscles as the gods intended.
now, sheâs left in a sleeveless cropped top and black boyshorts, with her pants and jacket thrown somewhere on your apartment floor.Â
you have a feeling she really liked your costume, too, because she practically begged you to take control tonight.Â
âif it gets too much, our safeword will be ââ
âsappho.â the slight whine of impatience in her voice sends a jolt right to your core.
âperfect.â
you kiss her lips, her jaw, her neck, your lipstick leaving angry red marks. you lodge your bare thigh in between viâs legs, biting your bottom lip when you feel her already warm and wet, when you hear her whimper as you apply more pressure to where she needs you most. you reach into your nightstand for your vibrator and switch it on, teasing viâs nipples through her shirt.Â
vi moans, deep and loud. not even thirty seconds, and sheâs already pulling at the restraints, the headboard creaking.Â
âare you gonna be a good girl for me, violet?â you coo, inching the vibrator lower and lower, feeling her shake underneath you. âbecause weâve got all night, and you better not break my bed.â
âââââ âââ ââââââ
âhey, so â i found these in between one of the couch cushions, thought maybe they might be yours.â
you can only spare a glance at the item mel is holding up â youâre grading freshman papers, focused on this one studentâs thesis about gender fluidity in shakespeareâs twelfth night.
âoh, those are viâs.â
âhm. and just how is it that you know what her underwear looks like?â
you stop writing mid-sentence and look up at mel whoâs giving you a pointed look.Â
you and vi had been the ones to clean up after feminist film friday last week, and one thing led to anotherâŚ.
in your defense: vi had been wearing these low cut jeans that showed off her v-line, and you could tell she didnât have her usual sports bra on because you could see the outlines of her nipple rings through her tight, white tank top. it took everything in you to wait until people cleared out during the credits of the watermelon woman to pin her down and have her whimpering for you.
âi justâŚguessed.â
âright.â mel rolls her eyes. âso, you and violet areâŚ.what? fucking? dating?â
you clear your throat and take a sip of lukewarm coffee.Â
âweâre keeping it casual,â is all you say.
âare you sure thatâs a good idea?â
you just shrug.
âjust â be careful,â mel, always the diplomatic one, eases. she walks towards you, sits on the edge of the desk, and hands you the pair of black briefs. âi know we all teased you about it before, but i donât want to see you get hurt. iâve seen you get your heart broken one too many times.â
âitâs fine, mel,â you assure her, grabbing the piece of fabric and shoving it at the bottom of your bag. youâre visiting their owner after this, anyways. âvi and i are just friends helping each other out.â
mel raises an eyebrow. âwell, you and i have been friends for years and weâve never gotten that close.â
âthatâs different.â
âhow so?â
âi appreciate your concern,â you say, avoiding the question. âbut itâs fine. nice, actually.âÂ
âitâs your life,â mel sighs. âmaybe donât fuck on our couches anymore, though.âÂ
your cheeks heat up. you turn your attention back to the essay in front of you.
ânoted.â
âââââ âââ ââââââ
vi starts showing up at your place after soccer.Â
sheâs allowed back on the field during games now, so she appears with a winning grin, a grass-stained uniform and fresh bruises on her knees. one time, she had the remnants of a bloody nose after a header gone wrong, and you could taste copper when she pressed her lips against yours before she hopped in the shower.
you keep her go-to body wash stocked â bergamot and cedarwood scented old spice â but she always walks out of the bathroom smelling like your mango-vanilla shower gel. sometimes even your coconut shampoo. she slips on one of your oversized graphic tees, drapes a light purple towel around her shoulders to avoid staining your shirt with her cheaply dyed black hair, fading back to pink with each wash. she walks over to the fridge in her soft gray sweatpants rolled at the ankles and cracks open one of the spiced-pear red bulls as you pull ingredients out for dinner. usually something quick and simple, since itâs always a long week and neither of you have capacity for anything more.
vi chops garlic and tells you about her game; you boil water for pasta and tell her about the latest drama between students in your literature class.Â
you pretend you have all the time in the world.
because you both know that viâs got the strap packed in her gym bag, that soon one thing will lead to another and sheâll be fucking you with it until youâre both sweaty and spent and exhausted in the best way possible.Â
youâve established this routine together, agreed upon several unspoken rules: no pillow talk once itâs over; no actually falling asleep in the otherâs bed; no crossing that thin sapphic line between friendship and romance.Â
no breaking that promise.
âââââ âââ ââââââ

vi whines, and you canât help but roll your eyes.
âcome on â hurry up.â
âyou practically begged for this, v,â you chide.Â
âyeah, but youâre taking too long and your hands are fucking freezing.â
âitâs the irony deficiency, babe,â you quip. ânow, are you gonna be a good girl and let me finish?â
âfine,â vi grumbles. she does stop squirming, though. you hum, pleased.
you certainly didnât miss the way her breath hitches at the nickname. viâs right hand, freshly polished, tightens on your thigh.
youâre not sure why she called you at 1:27am for your help with this, or why she couldnât just do it herself, but youâre sitting on her lap, painting her nails the color of pomegranate juice, a color she had chosen from the options you brought.
sure, you were about to turn in for an early night, but the moment you heard her voice through the phone, you rushed over to her place wearing nothing but your pajamas â plaid boxer shorts and a spiderman shirt that vi wore last time she was at yours, and you havenât washed since.
you stretch time out as much as you can, meticulous in every stroke, but painting her nails doesnât take much longer. you start to move off her lap â itâs probably time for you to leave â but vi grabs your hips, a playful smirk on her lips.
oh, right. thatâs the type of relationship â friendship â you and vi agreed upon.
shit. youâre pretty sure that youâre wearing your days of the week underwear. is it a turn-off that youâve got on a saturday pair on a thursday?
it doesnât really matter, anyways.
instead of initiating a kiss, vi takes the bottle of polish from you, swaps it for black, and gestures for your hand. you blink at her, until you realize what sheâs asking.
âoh! you donât have to ââ
âyou do me, i do you.â vi grins at you. âi thought that was our arrangement.âÂ
you laugh, feeling warmth radiate from your chest.
itâs kind ofâŚ.adorable, the furrow of her brow, the way she curses under her breath when a drop of nail polish falls onto your skin. sheâs surprisingly gentle, too, one of her hands holding yours for support while the other paints.Â
while she focuses on getting the polish onto your nails in even layers, you busy yourself by counting viâs freckles.Â
violet rose atlas has a constellation of freckles sparkling across her cheeks. you hope thereâs enough time in the world for you to memorize every single one.

âthat red head was trying to get your number.â
âare you jealous, v?â
vi scoffs, sipping her cherry coke. âof course not. iâm just observant.â
youâd convinced your manager to let vi back into sapphoâs. itâs nice, really, to see her back here again.Â
nice, but different.Â
gone are the days of staring at her from across the room, where she would be charming someone else, and only flirting with you when she came over to get another whiskey for herself and vodka something for her date. instead, she jokes around with mel, sky, and gert if theyâre around, and sometimes brings her teammates in as well to play a game of pool. she usually has one drink, and then switches to something non-alcoholic. sometimes, vi doesnât even come in for a drink; she just stops by to say hi before a team dinner or a study session.
(itâs fine â never once have you gotten an overpriced coffee from the cafe she started working at mid-october, and you probably stop by once a week between errands. thatâs your excuse, anyways.)
so. things are different, but nice.Â
you lean across the sticky counter. âyou want me to get down on my knees for you right now to prove which girl here iâd like to go home with?â
âbabyâŚ.â vi shifts on the bar stool. itâs hard to tell under the dim multicolored lights, but youâre pretty sure sheâs blushing, too.Â
âi think we both know youâd draw a bit too much attention to yourself. especially when i use my tongue to ââ
âmy carâs outside.âÂ
you smirk. âmy breakâs in 15.â
you used to spend your breaks in the alley outside sapphoâs burning through a cigarette. now you find yourself knee-deep in the passenger seat, eating vi out like sheâs the last thing youâll ever taste.Â
âf-fuck,â vi groans.Â
âfeels good, yeah?â you tease her clit with her tongue, sliding two fingers into her easily. you work fast, determined to let her finish before you run out of time.
âso fucking good. iâm gonna ââ
she clenches around your fingers; you lap her up eagerly, let her writhe against your face until sheâs had enough.Â
you sit back on your knees once her hips still, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand. you crane your neck to check the time on the dashboard, when you notice something in the footwell.
âvi! i thought i lost this.â
vi grins at you sheepishly, chest still heaving as you hold up the complete works of audre lorde, a tattered book with a well-worn spine and dog-eared pages.Â
âsorry. i meant to put it back on your nightstand once i was finished.â
you open to where sheâs placed a makeshift bookmark â the ticket from an underground sirens of zaun show youâd both gone to. youâve had this copy since freshman year, the scribble of your handwriting in the margins of practically on every page.
âitâs okay,â you tell her. âyou like it so far?â
âyeah.â she grabs the book from you gently, thumbing through the pages. you wonder if vi registers the curves of her own smile, tender and bashful. âhonestly, iâm not usually a fan of poetry, but itâs really cool how lorde writes about desire between women in such a tangible way, you know? i really liked this one verse in ârecreation:â âtouching you, i catch midnight as moon fires set in my throat.â itâs just so - so beautiful, the idea of something so domestic and mundane being almost magical, because thatâs what itâs really like when ââ
you donât even realize that youâre staring until vi looks up at you and freezes.
âsorry,â she clears her throat, closing the book and setting it aside. âdid i say something wrong?â
you assure vi that she did nothing wrong.Â
you exit her car, the taste of her lingering on your tongue, the feeling of her keeping your body warm on this cold november night.
âââââ âââ ââââââ

âââââ âââ ââââââ
vi has never been the type to wait by the phone for a girl to text, or to show up at her place after not hearing from her in a while, worried that she might have done something wrong.Â
yet here she is, standing outside your door.
itâs cool, though. completely platonic behavior.
she knocks.Â
thereâs no answer.Â
she knocks again.
nothing.
vi waits another second, leaning her shoulder against the door.
âitâs me, wonder woman,â she tries.Â
hope flutters in her chest as she hears you shuffle, unchain the lock. vi stumbles as you throw the door open, but she recovers quickly to find you: smudged black eyeliner enhancing the shadows underneath your eyes, hair in disarray, clothes disheveled.Â
âiâm not really in the mood for sex.â
vi canât help but laugh, even though your comment feels like a punch to the face.
âwow. figured you would think more of me by now than just some horny teenage boy.â
âlook, vi ââ
vi?Â
since when do you call her that?
âiâm sorry i missed the meeting today. i texted mel ââ
damn, so your phone does work.Â
youâve just been ignoring her calls and texts.
âbut iâm just⌠itâs not a good time, okay? iâll see you around.â
ah.Â
the classic generic excuse and non-committal statement combo.
you start to close the door on her before she even has a chance to get a word in.
the hits just keep coming.Â
thankfully, viâs always been a good fighter.
âwait.â vi places her palm firmly on the door before you can fully shut her out. âiâm just here to check on you.âÂ
your face remains unchanged.
âokay, well, youâve checked on me.âÂ
âyeah, iâve checked on you. you look like shit.â
you glare at her. âwell iâm sorry i didnât have the time to get all prettied up for you. i know that you like me better that way.â
âthatâs not what i ââ vi inhales sharply. sheâs a fighter, but she doesnât want to fight you. âmel dropped the news â about admin officially cutting our funding. i knew how that would affect you, soâŚ.â vi lifts the bag of takeout. âi brought some thai food for us to share. a pomegranate, too, because i know you like seasonal fruit. itâs been a while and honestly, i justâŚ.i just wanted to spend time with you.â
you exhale, your eyes softening.Â
there.Â
a hesitant smile, an invitation to come inside.
there are clothes all over your floor and dishes piled high in the sink. your desk is littered with empty boxes of cereal and cans of an energy drink that normally youâd never touch. the blanket that sky had crocheted for you â lavender and pink checkered â is unfolded on your couch, your laptop half-closed on the coffee table in front next to two stacks of printed essays â ones marked with purple pen, the others untouched. in contrast, your bed is still perfectly made.Â
you take the blanket and wrap it around your shoulders, sitting at the kitchen table and curling into yourself. vi busies herself in cracking open the pomegranate, putting the seeds into the last clean bowl in your cupboard. the palms of her arm wraps are now stained a reddish-purple, but she doesnât care.
vi manages to find two pairs of clean chopsticks for the thai food, and the two of you eat in silence.Â
âsoâŚ.â vi starts, watching you stab a piece of chicken before popping it into your mouth. âyou wanna talk about it, orâŚ.?â
âwhatâs there to talk about?â
âwell, for starters, maybe tell me whatâs been getting you into full hibernation mode? we havenât seen each other in, like, a week.â
âsix days,â you correct, chewing a mouthful of noodles. âlast tuesday, we played pool during my closing shift at sapphoâs. i lost. you made me down two shots of tequila because youâre a menace and you know i hate it.âÂ
âyeah, but i drove you home and tucked you into bed with water and advil for later, so iâm also a gentleman. so, just tell me whatâs been going on. weâll figure it out, yeah?â
âitâs fine,â you grumble.
âclearly, itâs not. just tell me what you need.â
âwhat i need is to not be distracted,â you huff, avoiding eye contact. âi certainly donât need you ââ
âtaking care of you, i know.â vi grabs your hand from across the table. she feels you stiffen on instinct, and then ease into the heat of her skin. âtrust me, i wouldnât be here if i didnât want to be. so â humor me.â
vi squeezes your hand, hoping to reassure you.Â
you sigh. âiâve just â iâve been spiralling trying to figure out how the centre can keep going with, like, half our required budget, trying to see if we can get some external donors and i still need to finalize the venue and equipment rentals for our last open micâŚ.andâŚ.and my sibling called again to tell me that things havenât been great at home, so i want to go down there this weekend to sort everything out, but my car hasnât been startingâŚ.plus iâm behind on grading, and i told my supervisor iâd have a complete draft ready by thursday and iâm not even halfway done, and thatâs the same day weâre having that art build for the climate rally on friday, and iâve been having the worst cramps since this afternoon, and all i wanna do is pass out and sink into my duvet, but i need to keep going ââ
vi squeezes your hand again, this time more firmly. âyou need to slow down.âÂ
âi canât.â you huff. âi have to keep everything from falling apart, and if i donâtâŚ.â
vi shifts to the chair next to yours, still holding your hand.Â
âbut you canât do it all if youâre too exhausted to take care of yourself. from the looks of it, youâve been living off of frosted flakes, red bull, and zero sleep.âÂ
you shrug. âif thatâs what it takes.â
âif thatâs what it takes, then maybe itâs not worth it.â
âdonât say that,â you tell her. âitâs all worth it. i just wish it wasnât soâŚheavy.â
vi nods, because she really, truly understands. she gives you the advice she can see you giving her in another context.
âyou ever think that maybe it wouldnât feel as heavy if youâŚi donât knowâŚwerenât too stubborn to ask for help.â
âthere are things that are my responsibility, violet,â you tell her, slipping your hand away. you reach for the bowl of pomegranate seeds, meticulously picking up one at a time with your chopsticks and crushing it in between your molars. âi canât just pass those off to someone else.âÂ
âfine. but what about other things? like the womenâs centre stuff â weâre a team, right? so weâll figure it out together, divide the labor so youâre not doing everything. and, maybe ask your supervisor for an extension, too? and, well, i donât really need my car this weekend, so youâre welcome to borrow it.â
you pause, narrowing your eyes at her.Â
âyou saidâŚ. âwe.ââ
âwell, yeah. iâm part of the team, arenât i?â
âbut youâll be finished with your hours in a week. thereâs no reason for you to stay.â
âof course there is,â vi whispers, studying your face as it morphs from suspicious to something else, something gentler.Â
her heart is pounding as she waits for you to say something, so vi starts to dig into the pomegranate seeds, the juice surprisingly more sweet than sour. some dribbles out from the corner of her lips, and you reach over to wipe it away with your thumb.
âiâd love for you to stay,â you hum, smiling, and vi feels her chest glow with a brightness it seems only you can bring out. âturns out you give pretty good advice.â
âsoâŚyouâll consider it.â
you shrug again. âmaybe. i am very tempted to take you up on the car thing.â
âall yours, if you want it.â
âare you sure?â
âitâs fine, wonder woman. iâll just carpool to practice â itâs better for the environment, anyways. canât show up to the climate rally as a hypocrite, can i?â she jokes, and you roll your eyes playfully. âand, iâll try to fix your car while youâre away.â
âwow. you are a gentleman.â
âgentleman? baby, iâm husband material.â
you actually laugh.
âi thought we were over gender norms,â you quip. âbut yeah. you are.âÂ
viâs cheeks heat up at your statement. you most definitely notice her blushing because you break out into a toothy grin
âi missed you, v,â you admit. âany other words of wisdom?â
despite your tender smile, you look exhausted. vi just wants to hold you through it all, tell you itâs gonna be okay. instead, she settles for placing a gentle hand on your cheek, running her thumb over the deep shadow underneath your eye.Â
âget some rest, pretty girl.â
a few hours later, you wake up alone.Â
you have a vague memory of warm arms wrapped around you, a heart beating steadier than yours. your sheets smell like old spice, your apartment smells like fresh laundry. you get out of bed and notice that there are no more dishes in your sink, no more cans or containers on any surface. all the clothes youâd been meaning to wash are now carefully folded on your couch.Â
thereâs a bright pink sticky note on your nightstand next to the keys to viâs car.
you talk in your sleep. something about stargazing? maybe we can go when you get back.Â
drive safe. text me if you need anything.

âââââ âââ ââââââ
zaun yellowjackets vs. piltover knights.Â
two minutes left in overtime.Â
one goal standing in the way of their trophy. one goal to end piltoverâs monopoly over the title of national champions.Â
caitlyn probably told her knights to be extra aggressive â win by any means necessary â so itâs been a long game of dirty plays and intentional fouls.
vi always puts her heart into every single game, but this time â
this time, itâs personal.Â
zaunâs defense works to regain possession and prevent piltoverâs attack. ashe manages to intercept a pass between two knights, and is quick in dribbling the ball until mid-field. she sends it over to vi with a swift kick. viâs quick on her feet, catching piltoverâs defense by surprise, sprinting closer and closer to the goal. she makes it to the penalty box.
this could be the winning point.Â
vi has it, too. sheâs so fucking close, about to fake out the goalie and kick into that hard-to-defend sweet spot â until a sharp, pointy elbow collides with her ribs so abruptly, it knocks the wind out of her lungs. she stumbles forward over the ball, knees skidding onto the grass. whoever it is also steps on viâs cleat for good measure.Â
âfuck!â she looks up to see who it is.
of course. itâs maddie fucking nolan, who doesnât spare so much as a glance as the ref doles out a red card. she nods at caitlyn as she walks off the field, no doubt following her captainâs orders.
her teammates help vi to her feet, and the ref makes sure everyone is in position for the penalty kick.
this could be the winning point. vi just has to ignore caitlynâs icy stare from a few feet away, and the heart threatening to beat out of her chest.Â
vi takes a deep breath.Â
she looks to the stands. among the crowd of screaming fans, zaunites and pilties alike, is viâs family. theyâre cheering.
youâre there too, sitting next to them.Â
everyone is staring at vi, waiting for the whistle, waiting for her to make the shot, but the only person she stares back at is you.
youâve got this, v, you had whispered to her the night before. she couldnât sleep, so she called you. vi wishes she was back there, now â tangled in flannel sheets, lucky snoring at the foot of the bed, gazing up at the glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to her ceiling until she finally fell asleep in your arms.
but, viâs on the field.Â
and this is the winning point.Â
the whistle blows.Â
she makes the shot.
âââââ âââ ââââââ
âi told you i wasnât a jinx!â powder sticks her tongue out at mylo.
sheâs all sweat and dirt and adrenaline, but, fuck, if vi isnât so, incredibly happy and proud of her team, of everything theyâve been through, everything theyâve accomplished.
it almost doesnât feel real.
just like it doesnât feel real, seeing you talk animatedly with her sisterâs boyfriend, laughing along with her siblings, smiling as you watch her dads hug and praise her.
when itâs your turn to do the same, you practically leap into viâs arms, gushing about how amazing she was, how proud you are of her.Â
âthis looks good on you,â vi hums, as you pull away from another hug. her fingers play with the bottom of the jersey, and she bites the inside of her cheek to ground herself in the moment. you, with her family. you, in her jersey. âthinking of joining the yellowjackets?â
âi think iâll leave the soccer to you,â you tell her. âyou were amazing out there. guess i should be calling you wonder woman from now on, huh?â
âwonder woman! thatâs where i remember you from!â vander suddenly exclaims, stepping closer to the pair of you. silco turns around, too. âyou once tried to get into the last drop with a fake id, didnât you? under the name diana prince?â
âshit,â you laugh nervously, eyes flickering between vander and the ground as if youâre once again a teenager caught in the act. âiâŚ.probably did.â
âi kicked you out, told you to go home to themyscira.â
âyeahâŚiâŚ.i remember that.â you nod slowly, furrowing your brows. âexcept, i didnât want to go home that night, so i lingered outside,â you continue. you turn to vi, and your face softens. âwhich was when you ââ
âbrought two glasses of cherry coke and rum,â vi finishes; she sees flashes of that night as you gaze into her eyes. âwe climbed onto the roof and ââ
that was her first kiss. vi never even realized until now, but â
you were her first kiss.
âi canât believe i forgot that.â
âweird, how memory works,â you agree, tilting your head curiously, looking at vi with a newfound interest, like a ghost from your past.
âwell, isnât this a story weâll be sharing on your wedding day!â vander chuckles, ruffling viâs hair.Â
âdonât pressure them, darling,â silco chides, but the smirk growing on his face gives him away. heâs loving this drama. âtheyâre barely 23 â i doubt theyâve discussed marriage.âÂ
âoh, weâre not ââ
âyeah, weâre just ââ
âfriends,â you say at the same time, careful to avoid eye contact.
vi feels like she might burst into flames at the knowing look vander and silco share.
âwell, violet, would your friend like to join us for a celebratory dinner?â silco asks.
so thatâs how youâre sitting between powder and claggor, listening to them talk your ear off about the young innovatorâs competition. viâs sitting across from you, next to ekko, who occasionally pipes in.Â
youâre here, sharing the tradition of a post-game meal with viâs family at the local pizza parlour.Â
caitlyn never even wanted to meet viâs family.
a few pizzas are ordered for the table, and you eat and laugh and sip your soda along with everyone else. you make a flower out of your paper napkin and hand it to isha, whoâs on the other side of powder, and she gives you a toothy grin in return. you answer all the standard questions about your job and major and plans for the future.
âafter graduation, iâm probably gonna take a break, get some work experience,â you explain. âmaybe save up some money for law school a few years down the road.â
âyou wanna be a lawyer, huh? you sure you wanna be friends with a felon, then?â powder asks, blowing bubbles into her soda through her straw.Â
vi coughs, choking on a mushroom.Â
âpowder!âÂ
âwhat! she never told you?â
you shake your head, glancing over at vi who suddenly finds it hard to look you in the eye. your foot has been pressed against hers underneath the table all night; you pull it away now. she takes a big gulp of water; vi looks over at vander and silco for help, but they seem to be caught up in their own conversation.
âoh, damn! â mylo adds, leaning over. âitâs a great story!âÂ
âguys, maybe donât ââ
âbut itâs a great story!â mylo insists. âshows what a badass you are!â
âshe didnât do anything serious, like murder or anything,â powder clarifies. âit was really just her pissing off some enforcers ââ
ârightfully so,â ekko adds.Â
claggor nods. âwe were just kids. they were harassing us for some bullshit, disruption of property or whatever, so vi steps in and things get heated ââ
âit takes three of enforcers to get her handcuffed, but she manages to get a few nasty hits in before they send her off to stillwater ââ
âshe spends three days there ââ
âi thought it was two ââ
âno, it was three ââ
âneedless to say, this isnât the first time vi has been sentenced to community service, but it seems sheâs really enjoying it this time, thanks to you,â powder finishes, winking at you.Â
âwell thatâsâŚ.quite the story,â you finally say, voice steady.Â
âoh! letâs tell her about the time she stole from some enforcers that were hoarding food ââ
as powder continues the story, and you listen intently, itâs hard to read your expression.
are you ashamed of being friends with her? disgusted by her family, her past? regretful that you ever let her touch you, let her into your life?Â
viâs stomach turns when your eyes collide; sheâs been down this road before, and viâs scared that she knows exactly what youâre thinking.
she pushes her chair back and disappears to the bathroom before she has to watch you walk away.
âââââ âââ ââââââ
thereâs a knock on the door.
âsomeoneâs in here,â vi says. she grips the edge of the counter so hard, her knuckles turn white.Â
deep breaths.Â
this isnât the same as before.
this isnât caitlyn, who threw vi out like a piece of trash when something better came along.Â
then again, you never knew this much about viâs past. youâre well within your right to â
thereâs another knock.
âv? itâs meâŚ.i have to get going, but i wanted to check on you before i leave.â
âokay,â vi clips. she looks up at herself in the mirror; she had splashed her face with cold water to calm herself down. a drop falls from her chin. âbye.â
âare you sure youâre okay?â
âiâm fine. see you around.â
you sigh, and vi hears you settle against the doorframe.Â
âviolet, let me in,â you press. âplease?âÂ
âiâm fine. you can leave.â
âokay, well, iâm not leaving until i see that gorgeous face of yours one more time,â you whisper. âi got all dolled up just for you, and all i wanna do is give you a proper goodbyeâŚ.âÂ
well, when you put it like thatâŚ.
vi grabs some paper towel to dry her face and fixes her hair before opening the door for you. you smile knowingly, enter and lock the door behind you.Â
you lean against the door as vi leans against the counter, the marble digging into her lower back.
âokay, iâll start because, frankly, i donât have time to waste,â you state after a few moments of silence. ânothing iâve learned about you tonight has changed how i see you. itâs just confirmed some things.â
âright. like how impulsive and violent and reckless iâve always been,â she lists glumly, unable to look you in the eye.
âmaybe you are all those things,â you pause. âbut, i donât fucking care. i mean, i do, because itâs part of you and i like who you are. i like you.â
your words do wonders to ease the tension throughout viâs body, and she feels like she can actually take a breath.
viâs eyes lock onto yours.
âyou do?â
âi like who you are, every part of it,â you tell her. âwell, i donât like that youâve had to fight your way through an unbelievably fucked up system ever since you were a kid, but the bottom line is that youâre the strongest, most compassionate person i know.â
vi blinks at you.
âfunny, i was just thinking the same thing about you the other day.â
neither of you say anything for a minute or so, letting the sentiment linger in the small space between you. once more, youâre the one to break the ice.
âwell, you know what they say about great mindsâŚ.â you step closer to vi. you take her chin between your thumb and your index finger. "can you guess what iâm thinking now?"Â
vi shakes her head, throat suddenly very dry.
âiâm thinking that iâve wanted to kiss you all night.â
âwhatâs stopped you?â
you grin. âi didnât want to make a fuss in front of your family, but now that weâre aloneâŚ.â
vi doesn't say anything, but instead closes the gap between your lips.
you kiss her, harsh and messy, tongue and teeth, swallowing her moans as your fingers snake down the waistband of her pants. you pull viâs bottom lip with your teeth before moving to her neck, nipping along the outline of her tattoo. you bite down harder on her skin, right at her pulse point.Â
"whatâs that you said earlier ââ a low groan tumbles from viâs lips when you start to suck just above her collarbones. another when your tongue soothes over the sting. âabout a proper goodbyeâŚ?â she tugs your hair so that youâre looking right at her.Â
itâs quite the sight â your lips swollen, chest heaving, eyes curious and lustful.
âanything you want,â you whisper, all breathless.Â
vi hums. she slips a hand underneath the frayed hem of your denim skirt, and you gasp as her nails scrape against your inner thigh.
she likes that youâre here. here for her.
"get on your knees for me, sweetheart.â
she pulls down her pants along with her briefs, as you kneel before her without hesitation.
you drape one of her legs over your shoulder, giving your tongue better access to her cunt. vi grips your hair tighter, bringing you in closer, and you moan, sending vibrations up her body.
"fuck," vi hisses. you add a finger, while your tongue works her clit.Â
you bring her to the edge, stay with her even as her thighs clench around your skull. she expects you to get back on your feet right away, but you stay, adding another finger and sucking her clit. she moans your name.
you pull away slightly. "one more, pretty girl," you promise. your chin glistens with viâs release; you lick your lips as you gaze up at her through thick eyelashes. "can you do that for me?" she nods furiously, and you get back to work.
after letting her ride your tongue and fingers through another orgasm, you kiss her ankle before releasing her leg. vi pulls you up to your feet, sucks the taste of herself off your tongue.
you pull away slightly, heart racing against viâs chest.Â
vi swipes her thumb over the smudged lipstick below your lip. she studies you, admires you, like youâre a fucking work of art that belongs in a gallery, like you didnât just fucked her through two consecutive orgasms in the bathroom at a pizza parlour while wham's "last christmas" plays through shitty speakers.
"take these off." vi tugs at your tights. you do as instructed, slipping off your underwear as well. she pulls you towards her, and lodges a leg in between yours. your bare cunt brushes against her thigh, back and forth as she guides your hips. "i can't believe you got all dressed upâŚ. wearing my jersey, and this pretty little skirt even though itâs so cold outside. all for me?"
vi flexes her thigh muscles, pushing you down faster and harder. you whimper.
"all â all for you.â
vi feels her pussy clench, with the desperation in your voice, the stickiness of your heat against her skin, the smell of the two of you intertwining. your orgasm crashes into you, and vi holds you through it.Â
you kiss her ever so sweetly before removing yourself from her grasp, smoothing down your skirt and looking around for your underwear.
"where are my...."Â
you look over as vi tucks your fuschia thong into the inner pocket of her jacket.
"i'm guessing you'll buy me replacements for christmas."
vi flashes you a shit eating grin before putting on her own underwear. she then pulls up her pants, not wiping your release from her thigh. she likes the idea of walking around with you seeped into her skin.Â
when vi looks over at you, youâre as fully dressed as you can be and busy checking something on your phone. she only sees a flash of your lock screen, but itâs her. a photo of her and lucky playing at the park; thereâs snow, so it had to have been a few days ago.Â
that doesnât mean anything, right? people use photos of their friends for their wallpaper all the time.
âi really have to go,â you sigh. you pull a tube of lipstick from your pocket and step closer to the mirror. âhey â do you think we could switch shirts? not sure i should wear this to my next dinner.â
vi nods and you remove her jersey, revealing a matching fuschia bralette. she wonders whatâs got you all coordinated â who else youâve clearly dressed up for.Â
âso, youâve got a hot date?â vi tries to act casual as she takes off her jacket, pulls off her shirt, and waits for you to answer. you take your time, fixing yourself in the mirror.
âsomething like that,â you finally say with a shy smile.
later, when ishaâs asleep on powderâs lap in the backseat, vi thinks about how your date might have gone, if youâre taking them home to the same bed vi has fucked you in throughout these past few months.
where do you get off, fucking vi in the bathroom during dinner while her parents are at the table, only to leave for another date, wearing viâs shirt, too?
âhey, can i ask you something?â ekko asks from beside her, cutting off the angry monologue in her head.
vi reaches over to turn down the music.
âsure, little man. whatâs up?â
âwhatâs the deal between you and wonder woman?â
vi clears her throat, gripping the steering wheel. âwhat makes you think thereâs a deal?â
âoh, please, we all noticed that hickey on your neck after she visited you in the bathroom.âÂ
the car crawls to a stop as the light turns red, and vi adjusts the collar of her shirt.
âweâre just friends.â
âwell, powder and i were just friends for ages,â ekko points out.
vi doesnât notice that the lightâs turned green until someone behind her honks. she steps on the gas, but the idiot behind her still cuts in front of her.
âasshole,â she grumbles, throwing them a middle finger for good measure. vi glances to her right at ekko, whoâs scribbling something in his sketchbook despite only the streetlamps outside providing light. âso, what made youâŚ.realize that you wanted something more?â
ekko closes his book, smiling to himself.Â
âhonestly? it was kinda a million little things, but what it really comes down to is that sheâs the only person i could spend every second of my life with, and iâd still want more time. and, in my experienceâŚ.itâs better to tell someone how you feel sooner rather than later.â
âor, some people prefer to wait a few weeks,â powder mumbles, stirring awake. ânice try, mister, but no interfering. iâm not losing 20 bucks.â
âwait â youâve bet on my love life?â
ekko smirks. âso it is love.â
vi shrugs, pretends that she doesnât immediately picture you in your kitchen, making her banana pancakes at 2am when she hears the word love.Â
âit doesnât matter.â
because, it really doesnât matter.Â
youâre out with someone else right now.Â
itâs over before it really had a chance to begin.

The chance to reconnect with an old friend
âââââ âââ ââââââ
you can excuse vi no longer attending the weekly team meeting. she finished her 100 hours around thanksgiving, so technically she didnât need to be there anymore.
maybe you could excuse her ignoring your calls, or leaving your texts on read. itâs finals season, and she did mention picking up a few extra shifts to save up for christmas presents.Â
but you simply canât excuse vi walking into sapphoâs with caitlyn fucking kiramman, ordering drinks from you like youâre absolute strangers.
âwhat the fuck, vi?â you seethe.Â
vi glances at her date. caitlynâs waiting for her back at a table, the glow of her phone screen illuminating her pretty face.
âwhat, should i have ordered something else? not every girl likes cherry coke and rum.âÂ
you glare at her from across the counter, but start preparing their drinks nonetheless.Â
âwhy are you with her?â you throw some ice in a glass, the cubes clinking aggressively against the crystal. âare you back together?â
vi has the audacity to roll her eyes at you. âwhyâd you care?â
you catch yourself before saying something youâll regret, something about liking her more than you definitely should considering the agreement the two of you had made.Â
clearly, vi doesnât feel the same way; itâs not worth spilling your guts to her at your place of work.Â
âbecause weâre friends.â
âyeah, right,â vi scoffs. âyouâre jealous, which you have no right to be because youâre seeing someone, too.â
you accidentally pour a double shot of vodka. you donât really care, and mix the drink anyways.
âwhat the fuck are you talking about?âÂ
âiâm talking about the date you went on the night of my championship game.â
âwhat date?â you slam the glasses in front of vi, so hard that youâre lucky they didnât break.
âoh, donât play dumb.â vi spits your name like itâs poison. âthis whole thing started because you said you didnât want a relationship, when really you just didnât want a relationship with me. you used me until someone better came along. you lied to me.â
her eyes are glazed over, her voice shaking ever so slightly. youâre not sure if youâre more hurt or angry by what sheâs saying, but it cuts deep; you continue as though you arenât bleeding out in front of her.
âi donât want a relationship with anyone and certainly not with you ââ
âexcuse me! are we able to order something?â someone with bright green hair and a septum piercing waves their hand in front of your face.
âyeah, just give us a second ââ
âlook, you and your girlfriend can fight on your own time.â
âsheâs not my girlfriend!â you and vi snap simultaneously.Â
you glare at each other.
vi grabs the glasses from the counter, and walks away.
âââââ âââ ââââââ
it took many brainstorming sessions, many boring conversations with potential donors, and many, many tears, but you managed to secure enough funding to keep the womenâs centre going for the foreseeable future. Â
it was a team effort, of course, so you just want everyone to enjoy this open mic night, the last event of the semester â even though you are weighed down by the absence of a certain someone.
the gallery space on campus that you rented out is both cozy and electric, decorated with fairy lights on the walls, with pillows and blankets on the floor for people to sit and watch performances. thereâs a table with drinks and snacks, a corner for people to make art if theyâre inspired.Â
youâre rearranging the food, watching gert perform an original song when mel slides in next to you, wearing a gorgeous white dress with gold accents.Â
âdo you mind running to the office? weâre out of paint.â
âreally? people donât usually use the paint.â
âwell, it seems to be quite popular tonight.â
âitâs fine. we still have lots of other stuff. they can just collage or something.â
mel shakes her head. âi really think you should go get more paint.â
âmaybe ask sky? i should stay here ââ
âyou could use a break, too,â mel cuts you off, placing a hand on your shoulder. âyouâve been nonstop all day; the rest of us can hold down the fort for a little while.â
you concede, mostly because sheâs right and you donât have the energy to argue.Â
when you get to the office, youâre surprised to find the lights on. even more surprised that someoneâs already there, sitting on the zebra-striped couch.
âvi?â
she jumps slightly when you say her name.
âmel texted me,â she rushes out like sheâs been caught red-handed. âsaid she needed help with something sheâd been planning.âÂ
you frown, until you realize why mel must have sent you here, specifically.Â
you havenât seen vi since that night at sapphoâs; youâd been quite a mess after your shift, ranting to mel on the phone about how sheâd been right and you should have been more careful, how you donât know what you did that ruined whatever you and vi had, and you really donât know what you can do to fix it.
youâre both too stubborn to reach out to the other, so it seems like mel decided to take matters into her own hands.Â
âyeah, i doubt sheâs coming,â you tell vi.Â
âokay,â vi says, but she doesnât move. âi, uh, i was hoping iâd run into you, though.â
âyeah?â you raise an eyebrow at vi, crossing your arms. âneeded another vodka martini for your piltover princess.â
âsheâs not â weâre not together.â
âoh,â you exhale. the animosity you were holding towards her evaporates, but doesnât completely disappear. you watch her, watching you stand by the doorway.Â
there are so many things you want to tell her, but you donât even know where to start. you know that youâve hurt her. she hurt you, too.
but, also:
you miss the cloudy blue-gray of her eyes, the scar on her upper lip.Â
you miss her.
âdo you wanna come sit?â
after being so far away from vi, for what feels like forever, you donât hesitate to take her up on the offer. your knees brush together as you settle next to her on the couch, a jolt of electricity passing through your body at the contact.
âso, i admit that ââ
âvi, you were right ââ
both of you stop your sentences short, chuckling nervously. you each urge the other to continue, and only get caught in a similar mess:
âi fucked up,â vi blurts out.
âi lied to you,â you confess at the same time.
an awkward, unfamiliar silence hangs above you; youâre not sure what to do next.Â
vi takes the leap. she tells you that mel explained everything: that you had to attend a dinner with alumni and potential donors on the same night of her championship game, but you kept it from vi since it was already a big moment for her; that you havenât been on a real date with anyone else since september. vi apologizes for jumping to conclusions and falling back into caitlynâs arms, shutting you out when she should have just talked to you.
youâre the girl who was her first kiss, she says. the girl who lingered in a vague memory, appeared in the fiction of her daydreams, and then suddenly became too real.Â
âi like you. i really fucking like you. and if it has to be as a friend, thatâs fine because i donât want to lose you.â vi takes a shattered breath, blinking back tears. she fiddles with the ring on her index finger, anxiously bouncing her knee. you place your hand there to steady her, and she exhales. âi guess iâm just not sureâŚ.when you said you liked me that night at the restaurantâŚ.is that what you lied about?âÂ
viâs practically doe-eyed, waiting for you to respond.Â
you shake your head.Â
âi lied when i said that i didnât want a relationship with you,â you admit, and the hint of a smile dances across her lips. âi had this major crush on you, you know? every time you came into sapphoâsâŚ.i couldnât help it. and then you showed up here and we became friends, and then we startedâŚ.well, you know the rest.â
âduh. i was there,â vi jokes, easing into her usual, playful self. Â
âi canât do the whole casual thing,â you continue, rubbing circles into her knee with your thumb. âi know we made a promise, but i just canât, not with you. itâs likeâŚin every other relationship iâve been in, i was trying to run out the clock. with you, though, with us, i feel like thereâs never enough time ââ
vi grabs your neck and crashes her mouth onto yours before you can finish your sentence.Â
youâve kissed each other many times, in many different places, in many different ways, but never like this: like youâre both willing to break one promise if it means forging a new one.
âwill you be my girlfriend, violet rose atlas?â you whisper as you pull away, lips brushing against hers. Â
you start to count the freckles on her cheeks as she beams at you, pulls you into her lap.
âi thought youâd never ask.â

Very sick of doing my job and having caseworkers and parents not want to do the same!! Like do not call 30 minutes before business hours end the day before a holiday and not expect me to be like âsince itâs the end of the workday I will have to send this to the on-call supervisor for approval, I will get back to you as soon as possible but it may be tomorrow morningâ and then they incredulously go âđŚ on thanksgiving?â Yes bro u donât wanna deal with ur child just bc itâs a holiday????
#like idk why people are so shocked when most people in direct care have to work holidays. ppl dont just. stop needing care#meposting#u would have to pay me exorbitant amounts of#of money to be a caseworker for childrenâs division it sounds like HELL but also why sometimes are u actively choosing not to help#just making terrible decisions bc its easier for u and then getting annoyed with us when we badger you to actually do what needs to be done#for your kid so things dont get worse!!#i hate this state ppl are all âprotect the childrenâ but then dont allocate more funds to the children. like pay caseworkers more#hire more of them so their caseload isnt impossible and they dont let kids slip through the cracks#leading to more kids getting separated from their families#behaviors getting worse and ruining their futures and traumatizing them#itâs UGH#this child is traumatized and clearly acting out because of that but because no one has the time or resources it doesnt get better#and really sweet kids who just need someone to see them and understand them and teach them how to cope get ignored or deemed âtoo difficultâ#and they get put in residential treatment with kids who make their behaviors worse like.#ugh anyway itâs such an evil vicious cycle and the fact that caseworkers who work with parents with custody donât have or just choose not to#have the time of day for those families. making more work for then in the long run when those kids get taken into pc bc ofâŚ.#basically poverty itâs ??????#endlessly frustrating. and then kids with âno issuesâ get totally ignored it makes me so angry actually#more kids need help and support and child protection feels completely hostile to people who really want to do what they can#you just burn out so quick#anyway uhm rant over#child abuse#this was about a parent btw a caseworker would find some way

While Some Celebrate Christmas đ
Weâre Drowning in Rain and Cold đĽś

Hello everyone,
My name is Mahmoud Naeem Abu Hatab, a young man displaced from Gaza. While many around the world are celebrating Christmas đ, enjoying warm meals and cozy gatherings with loved ones, my family and I are struggling to survive under heartbreaking conditions.

The heavy rain has completely flooded our tent, leaving us shivering in the freezing cold âď¸ without proper shelter, food, or warm clothing. This winter feels like it might be our last if we canât find help soon.

Our Reality vs. the Worldâs Joy:
⢠While homes are lit with decorations and people are exchanging gifts đ, weâre battling dampness, hunger, and the biting cold.
⢠We donât have blankets, jackets, or even enough food to make it through the day.
⢠My dream of completing my education and creating a better future is slipping away after losing my laptop during the evacuation.

I was thinking about a cute scenario where Hotch misplaces his Rolex and is kinda bummed about it but reassures his girlfriend that heâll just get another one someday. She has been saving up to get a new car but instead uses her money to surprise Aaron with a new rolax and heâs all like đĽšđĽšđĽš
The thought of spoiling that man consumes me.
The Watch | Aaron Hotchner

The case of the missing Rolex came to your attention before it did to Aaron's, and you were probably more devastated about it than your boyfriend was.
"Sweetheart, it's fine. I'll just get another one soon." He tries to placate you as you practically tear through his closet. Knowing Aaron, soon meant close to never due to how hectic his work life could get.
"It's not fine!" You call out from your spot on his closet floor. "A Rolex submariner going missing should qualify as an emergency situation."
You hear Aaron chuckle fondly and come up behind you, crouching down to give you a kiss on your temple, his hands moving down to stop yours before you could claw through another stack of his folded pants. "Honey, you won't find anything there. Besides, I mean it. I'll just get a new one."
Frowning, you lean back into him and sigh as he wraps his arms around your middle and drops kisses around your face. "You stress me out." You say lightheartedly, sagging in his hold.
He lets out an affectionate laugh, his chest rumbling under your back. "I love you, too."
To the misfortune of your bank account, your love for Aaron spurred you to endlessly research the variety of Rolex series available on their website. You have to fight back a grimace at every comma in the price tags.
After logging out of your bank account app (to protect your peace), you settle on purchasing the oystersteel model which resembled the one he lost.
You ended up digging into your car savings fund to purchase the watch, but you had no regret in doing so. Although it created a bit of a dent in your efforts to replace your current car, Aaron deserved to be spoiled. Plus, youâd be receiving your next paycheck soon enough.
The watch takes a little less than a week to deliver. Taking no risks, you had the delivery fully insured and tracked the packageâs movements like a hawk for days.
The hard part of the entire ordeal came with having to actually give the gift to Aaron. Of course, he wasnât above accepting gifts, but receiving gifts that cost thousands of dollars, especially on non-holiday occasions, was something else entirely for him.
One night as heâs laying beside you, watching tiktoks with you on your phone, you decide to bite the bullet.
âHoney, did you ever find your Rolex?â
He chuckles a bit sheepishly, seemingly still a bit embarrassed to have misplaced something so valuable. âNo. I think I mightâve taken it off during a case somewhere and left it in the hotel.â
Nodding, you suppress an excited smile as you suddenly sit up, causing his hands to grip your waist in surprise. âWhere are we off to, sweetheart?â
âI need to pee really quick.â You say smoothly, giving him a sweet kiss. "And no, you can't come this time." He gives your ass a quick slap as you crawl out of bed, causing you to shake your head playfully as he chuckles.
Locking yourself in the bathroom, you gently open one of the sink drawers containing your skincare items. Digging to the bottom, you pull out the green leather box containing the Rolex, taking a deep breath before opening the door again.
"Something wrong, sweetheart?" Aaron's voice sounds from across the room immediately, noting how fast you left the bathroom.
"I forgot something." You say and hurry toward the bed, unable to hide the giddy grin on your face.
Aaron props himself up on his arm and raises an eyebrow as you practically launch yourself back on the bed.
"For the best boyfriend in the world." You coo sweetly and extend the box toward him.
Aaron stares at you like you have three heads for a moment before frowning and carefully taking the box. "Sweetheart, you didn't have to..."
Your mood dampens a little at that and your shoulders sag. Aaron picks up on it immediately and sits up fully, eyes widened as he places the box aside and cups your face. "Thank you, really. But it must have cost a fortune, baby."
"You deserve to be spoiled, Aaron. Besides, I'm still being conscious with my money, so don't worry about it." You say, smiling when he tucks you into his chest and kisses your forehead.
"It's my job to spoil you, y'know." He grumbles playfully, squeezing your hip.
Accepting his affection, you reach for the box again and wiggle it in front of him. "Yeah, yeah, don't you want to see what I picked out for you?"
Before he opens the box, he showers you with more kisses, unable to ignore the fuzzy warmth that filled him.
"The watch, Aaron!" You protest in a fit of laughter.
He grins against your skin as he kisses your cheek. "Thanking my woman comes first."
When he finally does see the watch, he wants to just freeze time and take a picture of your expectant grin, thinking you look absolutely beautiful as you wait to see his reaction.
So while you fuss over putting the watch on for him, all he can do is stare at you lovingly and debate on whether to buy you a new car or an engagement ring first.

15k has been raised on chuffed!! Have we hit the goal for the evacuation this week?
Yes!!!!! We are in the critical phase of the fundraiser now that evacuation is actually tenable, and the donations that come in now will decide whether or not people check out once they mistakenly believe the family no longer needs support. Our full target is still $40,000 to pay for Manal's life-saving hysterectomy in New Cairo and for the treatment of Mohamed's wounds and Sarah's illness. As of today, though, December 10th 2024 -- by some small miracle -- we have indeed hit our short-term goal and Mohamed is now able to register himself and his two remaining children to join their mother Manal when she is transported to Egypt. This is a tremendous relief and Mohamed shares his gratitude with everyone who has made this possible. Please check out the FAQ I have set up for more details of the Al Manasra family's situation. I am hesitant to count any of our chickens until the family is 1) actually completely registered, since these donations only reach Mohamed $3,500 at a time and 2) actually evacuated! and then 3) that Manal receives the treatment she needs once they safely make it to Egypt. Both the hospital director and the recent delegation from Jordan has agreed that Manal evacuation must happen as quickly as possible due to her deteriorating health, although we are prevented from sharing a concrete date because the occupation controls the crossings and everyone should know by now how the occupation behaves. The irony of this Palestinian family being forced to pay for private hospital services while American taxpayer money funds single-payer healthcare for Israeli citizens as well as the bombs dropped on Gaza cannot be understated. Manal would not be put at the top of the evacuation list unless there was a high likelihood agreed upon by doctors that she can make a full recovery in Egypt. This remains the family's lifeline. Please remember that the last minute holiday gifts market is still open through the 14th! Artist submissions are back open today due popular demand + original offerings selling out. Tap below for the market and the artist submission form if you'd like to offer something! Share with your networks! Tell people they can get amazing stuff from you by donating to the Al Manasra family campaign!

I've just listed FOUR slots for high-detail traditional portrait commissions of film & television characters! Find me in the marketplace by searching my name or handle. the Al Manasra family is vetted #192 here by El-Shab Hussein and Nablusi.

a nonsense christmas / tyler owens x reader
summary: an unexpected snowstorm traps tyler owens with his workplace nemesis over the holidays. bonus points: there was only one bed.
content warnings: f!reader, allusions to smut
word count: 9k
authorâs note: happy holidays! đđđ¤śđťđ i hope they were merry and bright and as stress-free as possible. thank you so much for supporting my three little fics. this is unedited, but i wanted to post it before i went out of town as a gift made specially for the glen girlies - i wrote it to bring you some december cheer. see you next year!
âYou have got to be kidding me.â
Over the span of the last twelve hours youâd lost count of the number of times youâd muttered that sentence underneath your breath.
First, it was the office building in New York, where Tyler had the appointment right after yours at a ritzy funding agency. Then it was the airport, where youâd both flown standby and had a Wild West confrontation over the last seat on the plane, only for another passenger to volunteer their place in exchange for a travel voucher. (âItâs not like Iâm in a rush to see my family, anyway.â) The woman manning the desk had given you both a look that said, âSee, this is how an adult behaves,â which you thought was rich when the guy was clearly trying to cheat his way out of a Christmas dinner. Then, Tyler got assigned the seat behind you on the plane, and in keeping with his infuriating personality, spent the entire flight kicking your seat - or, Iâm sorry, just trying to stretch his legs.
After landing, youâd raced to the same rental car company. The woman at this desk kept pointing out that the weather seemed dire and that a snowstorm might hit at any moment, to which you assured her that you weren't headed farâa lieâand glared at Tylerâs back before shuffling into the parking lot with your borrowed keys, hoping his heater would break or that an ex-girlfriend had broken into his house during his absence and left coal in his stocking.
It turned out that the woman at Enterprise was right. The weather was dire; your visibility was shot to hell after the first forty miles, leaving you to squint through the flurry-turned-blizzard, your knuckles white on the steering wheel as you inched forward in your seat, as though you could magically see through the storm if only you pressed your nose just so to the windshield.
After a while you gave up and started to admit that unless you wanted to turn into a human Popsicle, you might need a Plan B. You let out a weary sigh, listening to the weather report on the radioââIf you're safe and cozy at home, it's gonna be a white Christmas, folks, but if you're out on the road, I suggest taking cover and waiting it out for Santa Claus to slide down the chimney.â
You scanned the passing road signs for fast food restaurants, gas stations, and rest stops, even took a few exits just to be hit with NO VACANCY in bright neon reds, making mental calculations for the rest of your trip.
Home was still a long way off: three hours, after dark. Normally youâd power through with an extra-large coffee, but it was snowing, and your window to remain safely on the road was closing with every passing minute.
Dammit.
After the fourth failed attempt at finding lodgings, you sat in the driverâs seat with the heater on and called your sister.
She answered after a few rings. In the background you heard your nephew and nieces screaming their heads off in that kid way. God, you loved those little rugrats but they were undoubtedly a nightmareâyou imagined Margo plugging up one of her ears and waving at them to be quiet. Of course, to no avail.
âWhere are you?â she demanded, the accusation sharp in her voice. You knew to expect it, so instead of answering, âWell, hello to you too, I canât control the weather, in case you havenât noticed,â you went with a plain response, facts only.
âSomewhere in the middle of Benburg.â
âWhere?â
âExactly.â
You heard her sigh. âThe snowâs getting pretty bad.â
âNo shit.â
âHey, don't âno shitâ me! I told you traveling right before Christmas Eve was going to be a nightmare.â
âAnd I told you I had no choice.â
She paused. There was whispering on the other end, an almost-silence that put your body on high alert until, finally, she said, âMom wants to talk to you.â
âMargo, no!â
Your protests fell on deaf ears. The phone was jostled as your mother took it and began to speak.
âHoney, are you almost here?â
Covering your face with your hands, you kept your voice light, knowing sheâd be able to detect even the smallest hint of frustration, and then youâd have to put up with another round of âwhy on earth did you take a meeting in New York right before the holidays?â
âNo, mom, Iâve still got a-ways to go.â
You pictured her narrowing her eyes, maybe placing a hand on her cocked hip.
âHow long a-ways?â
âLess than two hours,â you lied.
It was absolutely more than two hours.
A pause. âWell, I guess that's okay.â
âIâm glad you think so.â Through gritted teeth and the voice of a demented schoolteacher, you added, âMom, can you put Margo back on the phone now, please?â
âShe wants to talk to you,â you heard her saying from a distance.
After some more jostling, you felt the caller change as you merged back onto the highway and left the motel behind.
âMarg, can you tell her to cut me some slack, please? Iâm doing my best.â
âHa!â
You glared at the console, hoping she could feel it over the phone.
âGee, thanks! So much for the Christmas spirit!â
âListen, when you have three kids, two dogs, a husband, all of your in-laws, your parents, and your stepmom breathing down your neck, Iâll have a little more sympathy.â
âFine⌠But I promise Iâm not leaving you in the lurch on purpose. My flight from New York got delayed, I had some asshole kicking me in the kidneys the whole time, and I can barely see a yard in front of me because of this stormâitâs not exactly a walk in the park for me either.â
No cigar; it was you who felt her glare over the phone this time. Clearly, her issues outweighed all of yours on this occasion, and knowing her sister-in-law, you were inclined to agree.
You added: âIâll make it up to you.â
âYouâd better.â
The wipers on your rented car worked overtime to clear your windshield. You were about to end the call to focus on driving when, up ahead, you saw the red and blue lights of a highway patrol vehicle stopping traffic.
âOh shit,â you muttered under your breath.
âWhat?â
âThe road is closed.â
âThe whole road?â
âYeah, Marg, the whole road.â She would've argued with you over your tone, except you cut her off with âHold onâIâm being flagged down.â
A middle-aged man with a mustache came over to your car. He was wearing a fuzzy hat and holding a flashlight now that the purpling sky was fading to black. Without being asked, you lowered your window and shivered at the stream of icy wind that cut through the artificial heat.
âEvening, officer.â
âGood evening. Whereâre you headed?â
âSayre or roundabouts.â
âRough night to be doing so. This road is no good, you're gonna have to turn around, find a place to wait it out for the night.â
Your heart sank. You knew Margo was listening to everything. By the time you made it home, your ledger would have a massive list in the red which sheâd make you pay off somehowâby doing the dishes, playing horse with the kids, or worse, entertaining Kayleen, who would say as she always did that you really ought think about having children soon unless you wanted to get used to âa self-absorbed lifestyle.â
God forbid.
âDo you know anywhere that might have a last-minute vacancy?â you asked the officer, whose shiny name tag read HARRIS.
He scratched behind his ear, twisting his mouth in thought.
âTry the Sunnyside Inn. Back this way to Fairmont, right after the exit, left on Vail.â
âThank you.â
âMerry Christmas.â
âRight. Merry Christmas.â
You put your window back up.
âDid you catch that?â
âSounds like you're grounded,â said Margo. Her eyebrow must be arched because the judgment could be heard loud and clearâif you hadnât gone to New YorkâŚ
Well, there was nothing you could do about it now.
âItâs meant to clear up by morning. Iâll still be there long before Christmas.â
âYouâd better be.â She sighed.
Your niece Haley was screaming out the words to âThe Twelve Days of Christmasâ like a possessed banshee and giggling at what she knew must be an ear-splitting performance. You didn't know whether to be more horrified or amused; you remembered doing something similar when you were a child, back when you didn't have to worry about spreadsheets and grants and the trials and tribulations of flying Economy during the worst time of the year.
Margo must be thinking the same. Her tone sounded a little more sympathetic when she said, âDrive safe, and let me know when you find somewhere to spend the night.â
âI will. Love you.â
âLove you, too. Donât get murdered.â
âIâll try.â
âDonât tryâdo. Someoneâs got to help me defuse the tension during Christmas dinner.â
âMe? Defuse tension?â
âGood point.â
After hanging up, you followed Officer Harrisâs directions to the Sunnyside Inn. Wherever it was in relation to the highway, there werenât any signs you could see from the road and it reminded you of a famous, albeit fictional, location where people did go to end up murdered.
You only hoped whoever was on duty at the check-in desk had zero resemblance to Norman Bates or youâd have no choice but to sleep in your car.
Ten minutes later, you arrived at a quaint little building like something out of a Hallmark movie with six parking spaces and no neon out front. The facade was fake stone, the ornamental bushes lining the circular drive covered in a postcard layer of fresh snow. The wooden sign read VACANCY and had an empty slot where the NO might go, which gave you the tiniest sliver of hope, tempered by the thought that a place like this might not pay the utmost attention to a detail like that, especially in the middle of a storm. All in all, it was the sort of place you stayed at when you had no choice, being off the beaten track, but it looked as well maintained as it could be given its age, which you dated back to the 70s because of its slanted roof.
You parked and got your suitcase out of the trunk, the wheels clattering and then coming to an abrupt stop when you saw a figure across the way doing the same with his black carry-on.
âYou have got to be kidding me,â you called out.
Tyler Owens grinned. Even from here you could see the dimple on his cheek.
âRoad closed?â he asked, still walking towards the entrance. You did the same, glaring as you tried to keep pace with himâno, tried to beat him to the front door.
âYou know it is,â you answered, eyes narrowed, dashing the rest of the way just for his hand to reach the metal pull bar first. Damn his longer limbs.
With a smile, he opened the door and waved you through like a Manhattan doorman.
âLadies first.â
âWow, I didn't think you were remotely a gentleman.â
âWhat gave you that impression?â
You brushed past him into the heated lobby, pausing long enough for him to close the door so you could send him a pointed look.
âOh, I donât know⌠maybe your knee on my back?â you enunciated.
âI told youâthat was an honest mistake.â
âRight.â
The Sunnyside had a single check-in desk that looked more like the hostâs stand at your favorite restaurant than the counter at the cheapest Marriott, but it was decked in cute bells and garlands and baubles that glittered in the light. Behind it stood a woman around your age with straight, shoulder-length hair partially covered by a Santa hat.
As soon as she saw you walking in, she pushed the red strands out of her face and cleared her throat visibly before launching into a practiced spiel.
âWelcome to the Sunnyside Inn, where every day is sunny!â
She was smiling from ear to ear. The effect was a little like that of the creepy twins in The Shining and bah, humbug, were you not in the mood.
âCan I have a room for the night, please?â
You were made to feel guilty by the sudden fall of her face. But clearly Carolâyou had to do a double take. Was her name really Carol? At-Christmastime Carol?âhad gone to one hell of a customer service training program. Instead of letting your frown turn her smile upside down, she tacked it on with impressively greater fervor. The bell at the end of her hat rattled as she cleared her throat again.
âYouâre in luck! We have one vacant room left in the entire hotelâcontinental breakfast included!â
âIâm sorry,â Tyler butted in, âdid you say only one room?â
âYes, erâŚâ She looked between you, biting her glossed lip. âIs that a problem?â
âWeâre not together,â you said, refusing to look in Tylerâs direction.Â
Carol blushed. She was so pale that you thought it might be her actual blood you were seeing rising to her face and turning a shade of Veruca Salt. Or was it Violet Beauregarde?
âOh!â she exclaimed. âI thoughtâwell⌠you arrived together.â
âWe arrived separately.â
âThatâs not what it looked like.â
She blinked owlishly. Your own face was heating up as you felt Tyler putting his hand on his hip and sending you a shit-eating grin. You wouldnât hear the end of this. You could practically hear him bringing it up at a later date, saying, âYouâd be so lucky.â
You felt your jaw lock and your dentist cry. Lips together, teeth apart! Sheâd obviously never met anyone like Tyler Owens before.
âI can assure you, that's what it is,â you said in a steel-laced voice.
Carol might be an A+ at the customer service thing, but you were an A+ at staring people down until they begged for mercy. The only person you knew who was better at it was Margo, and the only person immune to itâthough it drove you crazy to no endâwas standing next to you, all six feet of him, in a jacket with snow at the shoulders that had quickly melted and rolled off the fabric. Shoulders⌠his annoyingly broad shoulders, which youâd had occasion to see with more frequency than you wouldâve liked, dressed in what Samantha, one of your colleagues, described as his âslutty little white tees.â
It wasnât enough for him to be a perpetual thorn in your side, he had to be attractive too, thereby proving that there was no God or that, Whoever they were, they must have an evil sense of humor.
âIâm so sorry.â Carol hung her head. Her hat drooped, the glitter-paper trimming on her suit droopedâthere was a high chance that she was actually an elf and youâd just worked your way onto Santaâs Naughty list. Come midnight, youâd be visited by the ghosts of all your ex-lovers and Sarah DeAngelo, your high school nemesis.
Meanwhile, Tyler swooped in like the big hero.
âNo worries, Iâll just stay at the next place,â he said. âWhat is the next place?â
âThat would be the Cozy Roadside! But they're all booked up, Iâm afraid⌠It's the storm, you see. Everyoneâs trying to hunker down for the night.â
âRightâŚâ
Well, he was taking it better than youâd have doneâthough it was clear he wasnât jumping for joy at the thought of turning around and trying his luck in the growing whiteout.
And that was if there weren't more road closures along the way.
âAre you sure you're not together? Iâm just saying⌠it is the holidays.â Carolâs little damn bell jingled again. Could you be charged with assault if you snatched it off her head? you wondered.
You pinned her with a stare and she had the temerity to flinch like a little cartoon dormouse.
âMeaningâŚ?â
âMeaning, it's a time to let bygones be bygones! You make such a lovely coupleâŚâ Her laugh was high-pitched, nervous.
You might have ruffled like an angry bird of prey. âWe are notââ
âAbsolutely not,â said Tyler.
ââAbsolutelyâ?â
It was the closest youâd ever come to seeing Tyler crack under the force of your EF5 stare. He looked sheepish, his hands in his pockets, giving a little hunkered down shrug that might have been read as boyish and kind of adorable to someone else.
âListenââturning to Carol before you could rip him to shredsââdo you know of anywhere I could stay until the roads open up again?â
âIâm sorry, no.â
âWhat about the lobby?â
âI would if it were up to me, but it's against hotel policy. I could get a write-up.â
This hotel has a policy? You stopped yourself from blurting out the words. There was still a chance this Strawberry Shortcake of a person was one of Santaâs little helpers and, if you kept up being a meanie, youâd end up going to the Bad Placeâthe Bad Place being the seat next to Margoâs sister-in-law at dinner.
You sighed. âDoes my room have a couch?â
âIt has a chair,â Carol offered.
You exhaled through your nostrils like an angry bullâwould the creature metaphors ever cease? Turning to Tyler, you held up a finger and said, âYouâre gonna owe me big time,â and fished your wallet out of your bag.
You slammed your card onto the stand and waited for Carol to check you in. She took out a book from a little cubby and took down your name and ID number, then fiddled with one of those old-school credit card imprinters, the ones you had to use actual elbow grease to use.
âI can have extra linens sent up! And Iâll give you our Friends and Family rateâin honor of the season!â
You have got to be kidding meâŚ
Tyler put his hand on your elbow, stopping your words.
âThank you, Carol, you've been a real gem.â
Carol flushed again, preening under Tylerâs cowboy charm. Iâm gonna be sick, you thought, grabbing your suitcase by the handle and wheeling towards the stairs before you could say anything else.
Your case banged against each carpet-covered step. Tyler was behind you, carrying his without sounds of trouble. You supposed that was a benefit to having arms the size of tree trunks, but youâd rather drop dead on this commercial grade floor than ask him for help.
To drown out the sound of the obvious weakness in your upper half, you adopted a high-pitched baby voice that was nothing like Tylerâs and said, ââYouâve been a gem, Carol,ââ just to mock him.
From Tyler came a huffed-out laugh. âWhy, âre you jealous?â
âAs if. I hope your chair has bedbugs,â you called over your shoulder, arriving at the landing and looking for room 227. You unlocked the door without waiting, tossing your bag and coat onto the bed to stake your claim.
In the open doorway, Tyler paused to stare at the promised bit of furniture.
âOh,â came out of his throat. âWhen she said chair, I thought she meantâŚâ
You followed his gaze. Like Tyler, youâd pictured a dusty old recliner when Carol guilted you into sharing a room with him. The relic actually taking up space across from the queen-sized bed was a chair that might have come out of your high school principalâs office. The seat was covered in a similar material to the carpet, deep purple, not falling apart at the seams, but still just a chair.
Not in your wildest dreams would you think of making an enemy sleep on a thing like that. And here you were, poking fun at sweet, freckle-faced Carol⌠sweet, sweet Carol who had done you a bigger solid than you couldâve ever imagined.
Tomorrow at check-out, you were going to leave her a $50 tip. You might name your firstborn after her.
You looked at Tyler. He looked at you. The poor man was aghast, and the more he glanced despondently at his abode for the next eight hours, the funnier it got until you were cackling, actually cackling like a Disney witch.
You unzipped your suitcase and took out your toiletries bag, still laughing as you stepped into the roomâs bathroom and sent him a little wave.
âSweet dreams, Owens!â
Hell, it was Christmasâyouâd be leaving Carol an even $100.
-
You made a point of taking your time in the shower, luxuriating both in the steam and the dejected look on Tylerâs face. A chair! An actual chair! After finishing, you took the robe hanging off the hook, figuring it was your prerogative as a lady, and opened the door just the tiniest crack to see what Tyler was up to. What you saw made you snatch your phone off the counter and leap from your hiding place like a fearless war photographer.
The shutter clicked, a series of lightning-quick flashes that caught Tylerâs attention. By the time he whipped his head to the side with a glare and a command to âdelete that!â youâd snapped half-a-dozen photographs of his position on the makeshift âbed.â
Carol must have sent up linens while you were in the shower because heâd pushed the chair up against the coffee table in a futile attempt to be more comfortable; his legs stuck out to a truly comical degree and he was covered in a floral blanket that could only be described as grandmotherly. Your phoneâbless itâhad captured the exact moment of shock mixed with absolute indignity.
There was no way heâd be able to sleep without falling over. You only hoped that when he inevitably fell on his ass it happened with enough volume to wake you from the sound sleep youâd be having in bed by yourself.
You tucked your phone in your pocket, smiling like one of Hellâs angels.
âAbsolutely not,â you said to his request. âShower's yours.â
Tyler grabbed a bundle of things off the floor.
âLet me guess, you used up all the hot water.â
âYou wound me,â you lied. âIâd never be so petty.â
He scoffed, gestured to his eyes in the universal symbol of Iâm watching you and moved past, locking the bathroom door with a resolute click.
A few moments later, you heard the sound of the shower turning on and settled into bedâyour lovely, only-yours bedâpleased that the sheets were clean, the mattress soft, the pillows comfortable, and debated whether or not to turn on the TV, but the shower taps squealed sooner than you expected.
Huh. Guess Tyler isnât a fan of an ice-cold rinse.
You rushed to turn off the bedside lamp, adopting a deep-sleep pose. You barely managed in the time it took him to pad out into the main room, bringing with him a warm, clean, soapy smell.
You held your breath, imagined he could tell you were fakingâespecially when he paused his movements at the foot of your bed. But then his footsteps moved towards his sad little chair and he turned off his own light.
All you heard for a while was the rustling of sheets, the creaking of the chair beneath his weight. There was a moment of total silence when you almost fell asleep. Then he tossed and turned. The chair protested. You heard him groan.
âYâalright over there?â you asked, hoping the answer was no.
Tylerâs words were laced with sarcasm.
âWho, me? Just peachy.â
âNighty-night, then.â
You sighed contentedly and dozed, thinking about Tylerâs future back pain and the satisfaction of winning Carol over to your side with a generous tip. Take that, Tylerâs dimples! The problem was, you actually wanted to get a few hoursâ sleep; there was still a fair bit of driving left for you to do, and Tyler just wouldn't shut up.
You heard every creak, shift, and sound of frustration.
Finally, you sat up and growled, âCould you try being more quietly uncomfortable?â
âHey, Iâm just trying to sleep.â
âI can hear your breathing all the way over here!â
âThat's not my breathing,â he said, âthatâs your guilty conscience.â
You glared into the dark. I will not let him get the better of me. You took a fortifying breath and kept your voice lightâviciously light.
âYou know, thereâs still time for you to sleep in your car. Youâll be the first person ever to be cryogenically frozen.â
âThat's not how cryogenics works, you muppet.â
You launched a pillow in his direction, pleased when it made contact. He sat up and protested, âHey!â
âDid you just call me a muppet?! You know, if you disappeared I could always blame the storm.â
âCarol would remember me,â he rejoined.
âMaybe Iâll disappear Carol too.â
âWow, two bodies? Sounds like you'll have your work cut out for you.â
âIâm very resourceful.â
âOh, I bet you areâŚâ
Argh! Slamming your fists down, you ground out the words youâd been holding back ever since you saw his grinning rodeo-ass face in New York:
âThere is no way Iâm letting you win that Heller Grant!â
Your nostrils flared, chest heaved, eyes all but emitted laser beams. Tyler, for his part, remained annoyingly composed.
âI don't think that's up to you. But,â he added, âI wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.â
âReally? And whyâs that?â
âNo reason, just a friendly headâs up.â
âSomething tells me thereâs nothing friendly about it.â
He paused. âHey, whatâs a little harmless competition between meteorologists, right?â
ââŚDid you really just ask that question?â
You both knew scientists were messy as fuck. Denying that they could be egotistical, overly dramatic, delicate with their egos, and especially prone to schadenfreude was a cheap attempt on Tylerâs part.
He chuckled, as if admitting it was true.
âFine, touchĂŠ. But itâs really not personal. It's a grantâeveryone wants to win it. Itâs not like weâre trying to run you out of business or anything.â
âOh, believe me, we arenât worried about that,â you shot back. âEveryone knows Kate Carter is the ace up your sleeve. But thatâs itâone ace.â
âOne ace is all you need.â
âNot in this economy itâs not.â
âItâs about the storms!â Tyler said. âYou do get that, don't you? Saving lives, limiting damageâŚâ
âRight, I forgotâyou're Saint Tyler, the Tornado Wrangler for profit!â you mocked.
There was a silence in the room, accusatory. Deafening. After this, you were definitely going on Santaâs Naughty list, you thought, not only this year but for at least fifteen to life.
âSorry, that was shitty,â you admitted, swallowing your pride.
âYeah, it was. You have no idea why I do what I do. And obviously I have no idea why youâre such aââ
âBitch?â you supplied.
âI wouldn't use that word. I wouldn't,â he reiterated seriously. âI was going to say âwhy youâre such a bee in my bonnet.ââ
You let out a snort. âShut up.â
âHas anyone ever told you you're unreasonably distrustful?â
âOnly about three-point-five therapists.â
âWhy the point-five?â he asked.
âOne was a grad student.â
He laughed. âGuess weather research doesnât payâeven if you do wear fancy suits.â
That made you smile. You and Tyler were as diametrically opposed as two could people get, even down to your clothes.
âLetâs just agree,â you said, remembering the spirit of the season, âthat we rub each other the wrong way and leave it at that.â
âHey, Iâve never had a problem with you. I mean, yeah, weâre always up against each other for funding. Itâs a race to the topâwinner takes all, whoever publishes first gets the bragging rights. But thatâs the gameâI know that. Now, if you have a problem with me, this seems like as good a time as any to clear the air because I really have no idea what I could've done to make you hate my guts like this.â
You rolled your eyes.
âOh, sure, be the mature one, take the high road⌠Tell me, Owens, does it ever get exhausting being so fucking perfect all the time?â
Another pause.
âWhat the hell are you going on about?â The chair creaked. ââPerfectâ? Iâve never said I wasâFUCK!â
You perked up, reached an arm to turn on the light. Tyler was sprawled on the floor. The coffee table and chair were no longer attached and he was nursing what looked to be his hip while kicking at the granny blanket tangled round legs.
âDid you just fall into the gap?â you said eagerly, trying to record the image in your brain.
He wrestled the blanket until he finally won, then stood resentfully, his hair mussed, a crazed look in his eyes.
âYes, I fell into the gap! But there was no video evidence,â he said pointing. âYou canât prove it. At this rate, it might be smarter to sleep on the floor.â
âLooks like it.â
You watched him kick the chair away with his foot and lay the blanket on top of the coarse brown carpet. He tossed his pillow down and picked up the sheet, holding it in front of his body and looking like he might actually prefer to try his luck in the parking lot than on the inhospitable floor. You observed him with interest, biting your thumbnail and watching his throat move with a sigh, the dejected set of his shoulders, the strong jaw set until it looked like it would break glass.
âOh, fine!â you said. âYou look like my senior dog trying to decide where to lay down!â
âYou have a dog?â he asked with enough skepticism to be insulting.
âShe lives with my sister.â
âWhatâs her name?â His jaw relaxed, eyes softened.
âDoppler. Donât laugh!â you exclaimed, though it fell on deaf ears.
âThatâs kind of⌠really nerdy.â
âDo you want to sleep on the floor?â
âIâm sleeping on the floor anyway.â
You whipped the covers off the left side of the bed. Tylerâs eyes almost bugged out of his head.
âNo.â
âCome on, Owens, I don't have cooties.â
âItâs not about the cooties, Iâm trying not to get killed Basic Instinct-style!â
You knew the scene: Sharon Stone fucking her rock star boyfriend before stabbing him to death with an ice pick. Unbidden, your mind filled with images of Tyler underneath you, his throat bared to you as you rode him.
âYou wish!â
Tyler looked at you sternly.
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âWeâll make a divider out of pillows!â you suggested, starting the master feat of engineering by plopping all your extra ones vertically down the center of the bed.
You didnât know where this sudden stroke of generosity had come from. Only ten minutes before you wouldâve been perfectly fineânay, ecstaticâto know that Tyler was about to spend six hours in pain and discomfort.
Maybe it was your guilty conscience. Maybe heâd convinced you that this vendetta you had against him was one-sided and kind of silly. Maybe you just wanted to get some damn sleep without feeling like you were racking up bad karma by not offering to share the bed.
He eyed your attempts like a skeptic, his hands on his hips.
Damn, they were slutty little white tees⌠you thought.
âThis is ridiculous,â he pointed out. And yet heâd dropped the sheet and stopped all attempts at sleeping on the floor like an imprisoned martyr.
âRidiculousâ was a good way to describe what the start of this holiday was turning out to be. If youâd told your past self that come December 23rd youâd be sharing a hotel room, even a bed, with Tyler Owens, youâd have laughed in your own face. But here it wasâcourtesy of the weather, a possible redheaded Christmas elf, and a series of minor coincidences that had all resulted in this: you shrugging and saying, âTell me something I donât know. Tick-tock,â you added with a clap for emphasis, âmy goodwill has a time limit!â
âVery festive of you. Are you sure this is okay?â
He approached you with a cautious air, turning down the covers like you might yell âpsych!â and attack him at any moment. Even when he laid himself down, it was at the very edge of the bed, and you thought he might end up on the floor anyway given a hasty mid-sleep roll, but then, that would be his own doing and heâd have nothing else to blame but his own clumsiness.
âJust keep your hands to yourself,â you decreed.
âObviously.â
You turned the light off.
This isnât so bad, you thought. If you closed your eyes, you could almost forget he was there. You hummed to yourself, snuggling down, finally making headway on the quest for rest and relaxation. Twenty minutes passed, maybe an hour. Hell, it might have been twoâall you knew was that Tyler was not keeping up his end of the bargain.
âYouâre encroaching on my space!â you hissed, pushing back against pillows that had moved to your side of the bed.
Tyler turned, not remorseful in the least. âIâve got, like, half-a-foot on you! What do you want me to do?â
âThatâs sizeist,â you sniffed.
There was a sound from his direction.
âAre you laughing?â you accused.
âYeah, Iâm laughing⌠Youâre funny. And thatâs how I know I donât have a problem with you.â
You were unexpectedly pleased, despite his bed theft and the rehashing of your previous conversation. No one had ever called you funny before, though youâd always thought you were.
Tyler Owens thinks Iâm funny?
So sue meâyou were only human and not above hoarding little compliments.
âWhat did you mean,â he started to ask, shifting so that he could lay on his back, âabout me being âperfectâ? Not that I donât find it flattering, it's just not true at all and it didn't sound like a good thing, by the way that you said it.â
You kept silent, staring at the A/C unit attached to the wall.
âI know youâre not asleep!â he declared, poking you in the back.
âAnd how would you know what I sound like asleep?â
âWell, it wouldn't sound like speaking, now would it?â
Shit. He had a point.
You let out a sigh, regretting your magnanimity now that you were in a dark room side-by-side with the man and couldn't avoid his charm or the ease he inspired like magic.
Youâd always found that the most unsettling thing about him.
âYouâre gonna get the grant,â you admitted with more sincerity than you meant. In your voice you could hear the layers of frustration and insecurity and anger and disappointment that you couldnât face in the day, when you had people counting on you and a reputation to uphold.
Tyler was quiet a moment.
âYou don't know that.â
âYeah, I do. Iâm not good with the whole⌠schmoozing thing. Not like you are.â
âSchmoozing?â he asked.
âThatâs what it is! Youâre good with people.â
âSo are you.â
âNo, Iâm not,â you laughed bitterly, craning your neck to say it over your shoulder. âIâm prickly.â
âThatâs bullshit,â Tyler said. âAnd, anyway, this is research, not a personality contest.â
âHa!â
âYou do know there are plenty of prickly scientists out there getting people to throw money at them all the time? Sometimes, itâs the pricklier the betterâpeople think that if you're really a genius, you should treat everyone around you like the bottom of the garbage pail.â
âItâs different for you,â you pointed out.
âHow so?â
You sat up, eyeing his shadowed form.
âWell, sweetie, thereâs this thing called discriminationâitâs what happens when having certain anatomy makes people more inclined to think you know what you're doing.â
âVery profound⌠Thatâs not what you meant.â
He was right. While sexism did come into funding, as it came into a lot of things where it had no place, your main gripe about Tyler had nothing to do with him being a man and everything to do with him being, well, him.
You raked a hand through your hair.
âAll you have to do is walk into a room and get pally with the panel,â you confessed. âI canât compete with that.â
Somehow, through the dark, his eyes found yours. His expression was unreadable, but you could feel his attention on you, his scrutinyâthoughtful, patient, wanting to understand.
âI donât know what to say,â he said at last.
âSeriously? Youâre gonna make me be honest with you and then leave me holding the hot potato of awkwardness?â
âIâm not doing it on purpose,â he laughed. âI just⌠Itâs not like I get up in the morning thinking, âHm, what grant can I possibly steal from you today?ââ
âRight,â you drawled, âyou just canât help being you.â
âI canât!â he insisted, rising up on his elbows. âI like people. I like meeting them⌠talking to themâeven the buttoned-up ones that look like they haven't been outside of an office building in months. I can't apologize for that. But it is a little unfair of you if your sole reason for being mean to me all the time amounts to two cents and a bit of pocket lint.â
âI am not mean!â you protested.
Tyler cocked his head.
âOkay, maybe Iâm a bit brusque,â you allowed. âBut I let you sleep in my bed!â
âFor which Iâll be forever gratefulâŚâ
You opened your mouth.
ââŚbut not enough to turn down the grant.â
You shrugged, not expecting him to hand you the award on a silver platter.
âIt was worth a shot,â you said. Another joke.
Tyler gestured with his hands; you could see them fluttering around expressively in the near dark.
âYouâve just gotta stop approaching people and automatically assuming that theyâre not on your side,â he said gently, and because you were a contrarian, you chose to take at least one-sixteenth of offense.
âAre you mansplaining relationships to me?â
âNot mansplaining, just a friendly bit of advice. Take it or leave it,â he tacked on, shrugging his shouldersâdamn his shouldersâŚ
âThanks.â
You were trying to wrestle your brain away from the thought of his bare chest again.
His bare chest⌠the expanse of his chiseled abs, the dip of his hipsâŚ
You looked away, your face as hot as your shame. You would not have sex thoughts about a man you were sharing a bed platonically with. You would not admit to yourself that your traitorous gaze had wandered down to the outline of certain parts while he was standing there in gray sweats and a white T-shirt that left little or nothing to your debauched imagination.
You would not.
You would not.
Santa, come get me before I forfeit all brownie points for life.
âNow this is awkward.â The words slipped out of your mouth. You pulled the sheet up to your chin as if it were a straitjacket and Tyler chuckled to himself, probably thinking that you meant awkwardness at having a moment of vulnerability rather than red-hot lust.
âGo to sleep,â he said kindly, turning back on his left side.
âAlright. Night.â
âNight.â
-
Later, you would swear it didn't happen on purpose. At some point in the night, after Christmas Eve had settled well and truly over this random Oklahoma town, the pillow fort was forgotten as you and Tyler fell asleep, succumbing to the fatigue of the dayâs travel and your late-night conversations.
The first inkling you had was that your pillow was far too warm against your cheekâand it moved, up and down, like the gentle swaying of a boat upon a calm sea. When you regained enough consciousness, you realized that the âpillowâ kept a beat, and that's when you realized your pillow wasn't a pillow at all but the cradle of Tylerâs chest.
Heâs quite comfortable, you thought, still half-asleep. He had his arm thrown around you and the tips of his fingers rested against a patch of naked back where your shirt had ridden up.
So far, so good; you couldnât complain about the weighted blanket treatmentâat least not in your hazy, sleep-softened state. You sighed happily, snuggling further into his shirt.
You felt his arms tighten.
His breathing shift.
You were straddling the line between dream and wakefulness when you noticed his legs tangled up in yoursâŚ
âŚand the hard protrusion pressing right against your stomach.
You opened your eyes. Tyler was awake and springing out of bed like he had a whole swarm of bees in his bonnet.
âOh god,â he exclaimed, âI am so sorry! That is not⌠I did notââ
âItâs fine,â you tried to say.
âNo! No, itâs not.â
âTyler, would you stop acting like a virgin with the vapors? Itâs cold, Iâm not the stillest of sleepers, nothing was meant by it.â
He ran a hand through his hair, then put it on his hip, then pointedâyou didnât know at whom, he was simply unable to be still, and the more he panicked the more you thought it was silly how he was making such a big deal out of nothing.
(Okay, so maybe it wasn't nothing, but one of you had to be the adult about it.)
âI was not trying to put the moves on you,â he emphatically declared.
âThat was made abundantly clear by what you said to Carol. Also by the drool on your pillow.â
âTheââ
His gaze darted. His face took on an added hue of pallid as he bent over his pillow and straightened, eyebrows battened, finding nothing there.
âSee, that was mean.â
âNo, that was funny,â you laughed.
The whole time, you did your best to keep your eyes trained above his shoulders, though you had a bone-deep curiosity now that youâd felt the impression of his dick against your skin.
If your periphery was to be trustedâwhich, your doctor said you had excellent vision in that regardâhe was as well-endowed as he was rumored to be, sometimes with envy, sometimes pejoratively and in relation to his ego. Now that youâd spent an entire day crossing paths, you weren't so sure about that last bit. But you were sure that in the privacy of your own thoughts, youâd have a bitch of a time unknowing that Tyler Owens was, in every regard, unfairly blessed.
âBack to neutral corners?â you asked, patting the bed.
Tyler stared at the mattress with something like horror.
âYou are not being normal about this!â you exclaimed.
âMaybe I oughta sleep on the floor.â
âSeriously?â
âYeah, itâs just for a few hours more.â
You sighed.
âTyler James Owens, now you are the one being a muppet.â
âTake that back! And how do you even know my middle name?â
âItâs called Google. Now stop acting like a muppet and Iâll stop calling you one!â
Drat⌠You were so close, but your eyes snagged on the bulge in his pants at the exact moment Tyler was looking at you. There was no way to deny it.
You wiped your face of all expression.
Tyler pleaded, âDo not make this worse for me than it already is.â
âI didnât say anything!â
âYou donât have to, it's written all over your face.â
Me? My face? You pointed at yourself.
Tyler huffed, âYou aren't letting me forget this for as long as I live, are you?â
âNot in your dreamsâŚâ you fessed up. âNeed me to pace around the hall for ten minutes, let you take care of business? I have a spare sock you can hang on the door.â
âYouâre evil.â
âNooooo, where are you going?â you needled, watching him head to the bathroom with a scowl on his face. âI was having so much fun!â
âMind your own business!â he yelled back.
âBut Tyler, itâs perfectly natural!â
He locked the door.
Only then did you cover your mouth and really let yourself have a laugh.
-
He took exactly 23 minutes. You knew because you timed him, a childish impulse you indulged in trade for not probing the question of what he might be thinking about as he got off. Obviously, you knew enough biology to not flatter yourself into believing that his morning wood was down to you; still, you allowed yourself to believe it just the tiniest bit. It made you feel betterâto think he was affected by you. To believe you werenât alone in being provoked to unexpected places.
He came up to the bed with a wary glance. On purpose, you pretended to be uncommonly interested in your nails.
âI thought youâd be asleep.â
âDidnât feel like it,â you said, buffing a nonexistent spot on your shirt. âAll good?â
âDonât start.â He took his pillow and made for the chair.
You clicked your tongue. âYou really don't have to sleep on the floor, you knowâŚâ
Which was kind.
â...I thought that was the whole point of Tylerâs Special Solo Time.â
Which wasnât.
He rounded on you with his finger outstretched.
âDo not call it that!â
âOkay!â
âNever again!â
âFine!â
âAnd for your informationâthat isnât what I was doing in there.â
âOh!â you said, genuinely surprised, âI just assumedâŚâ
âWell, you know what they say about assuming.â
You make an ASS out of U and ME.
Color me surprisedâyou genuinely thought Tyler had been in the bathroom rubbing one out.
Could it be that he was too much of a gentleman to do it with you the next room over? That seemed like the likeliest explanation.
You were touched. Weirdly, inappropriately.
Also let down by the fact that you werenât sexually irresistible enough to make him lose all sense of proprietyâgranted, you hadnât been trying to be sexually irresistible at the time, more like drooling into his shirt.
âGod, what?â he asked, eyes boring into yours like he was trying to crack open your mind and read it like a book, pushed to the brink when he couldnât figure out what you were thinking or if you believed him about not masturbating in the bathroom.
âNothing! Why are you chewing me out just because you got an erection?â
âDonât say âerectionâ!â
You rolled your eyes.
âIâm not gonna call it a bonerâIâm not in middle school anymore!â
âYou have gotta be kidding meâŚâ
He face-planted onto the bed, not consciously, you didnât think, more like the natural result of a situation thatâd understandably fried his brain.
You could relate⌠and it was supremely satisfying to hear him say the words youâd been thinking for over a day: you have got to be kidding me, indeed.
âThis is the weirdest fucking Christmas I have ever had,â he mumbled into the mattress.
You laughed, feeling not an ounce of animosity as you watched his prone form. He was funny, and heâd been nicer than you deserved. You no longer believed that he had kicked you in the back during your flight on purpose.
âWhat are your plans for the holidays?â you asked him, letting him off the hook about his penis.
He turned his head and searched you for any trace of nefarious intent. He answered when he was sure you werenât going to keep messing with him.
âThe team and I are going to Kateâs. Then Iâm spending the start of the New Year at home, hopefully, if there isnât another fire to put out.â
âYouâre from Arkansas,â you said.
âMm.â
ââRegnat populus.ââ
He quirked his brow.
ââThe People Rule,ââ you explained. âYou don't know your own stateâs motto?â
âNobody knows their stateâs motto.â
âI had to learn them all for school.â
âHigh school?â
âElementary.â
âOh,â he laughed, âso you grew up rich.â
âShut up.â
He sat against the headboard next to you, crossing his ankles.
âWhat made you want to become a meteorologist?â
âSeriously?â you asked.
âWhat?â
âItâs a cliched question.â
âItâs a getting-to-know-you question!â
You frowned.
âWhy would you ever want to get to know me? Iâve done nothing but fight you since the day we met.â
âWhy wouldn't I?â
Plain, simple.
The lamplight made it impossible to hide a thing. There was a line between his brows, as if he couldnât for the life of him understand why you couldnât understand. âI like people.â Youâd thought it trite at the time, you didnât trust it, but you were thinking maybe it was true. Instead of judging you by the way you challenged, harangued, goaded, mocked, judging him, heâd kept trying to figure you out. It was one of the reasons he was good at his jobâthe merging of both science- and people-smarts.
If you had a brain in your head, you might learn from him. But to do that youâd have to get your head out of your ass and stop seeing him as the enemy.
Except you didnât.
Sometime between the Heller offices and this moment in the Sunnyside Inn, your feelings towards him had changed. The animosity? Gone. All that was left in its place was a newfound respect, fresh like the layer of snow sitting over the world outside the walls of your hotel room, and, if you were being brutally honest, an attraction that was hard to ignore.
You held your breath.
His hair, glinting bronze, was sleep-mussedâthe detail intimate, arousing, just like the stubble on his cheeks and the rugged line of his throat leading to the curves of those shoulders you couldnât stop thinking about. What was that one corny-as-fuck phrase some fuckboy musician had once said?
Sexual napalm.
Tyler Owens was sexual napalm and you werenât immune.
âStop looking at me like that,â you said.
It was Projection 101, but in this case you werenât entirely wrong.
Tylerâs eyes wandered down to your mouth, seductive without even trying. He was breathing as fast as you, his lips parted, tongue peeking out to wet them when he said, âCanât.â
And that was all it took. One second you were staring at each other with twin fuck-me expressions and the next you were in his lap, your hands buried in his hair. The kiss was eagerâmessyâuncaring of finesse, indifferent to perfection. It was the exact opposite of the way youâd been living your life and it was mostly down to him. Even when heâd been driving you absolutely insane, there was no denying that Tyler brought out in you something hard to control. He made you ambitious, competitive, unfilteredâsometimes to an unflattering degreeâbut God, did it feel good.
He tilted his head and delved his tongue into your mouth. You groaned, pulled him back by the hair until you felt a rumbling sound in his throat which you decided to chase on instinct, latching your mouth onto that part of him youâd been obsessing over for the last few hours, sucking, biting, laving your way down to his clavicle.
âThis is not how you get to know someone,â you joked, feeling him get hard again underneath you.
âYeah, it isâŚâ
âDonât say 'biblically.ââ
He laughedâit was a giggle that made you smile and peer into his face.
âYou said it, not me. Are you gonna kick me out of bed later?â he asked, stroking a hand up your thigh.
âNo. Are you gonna run for the hills like I soiled your virtue?â
He balked. âThat is not what I did.â
âYeah, it is!â
âWellââhe nipped your jaw, hand slyly making its own path up to your breast, which he stroked open-palmed so that you rocked your hips against hisââI promise not to be virtuous at all for the nextâŚâ He glanced at his watch. âThree hours.â
âThree hours?â
âWhat can I say,â he shrugged. âIâm a people pleaser. Itâs my curse.â
-
Suffice to say, by the time 10:00 oâclock rolled around and you and Tyler made your way down so you could settle up the room with Carol, you were feeling like a million bucks. Not even a full spa day could have infused you with this much energy.
There was a pep in your step, a smile plastered to your face, and when Carol said, âHappy holidays! It was nice having you with us!â you were so smug that you slipped the tip in her hand and said, âThank you, Carol, you sure made it sunny!â
Tyler cackled, but tried to do it subtly. (And failed.)
Right on the money, the snow had stopped falling during the night. Itâd be a white Christmas, all right, but you should be able to drive home safely and arrive in time for lunch.
Tyler loaded your suitcase into your car, gallant as ever.
âSo,â he said.
âSo.â
You exchanged shy glances, which was new for you. Youâd never had reason to feel shy around Tyler before, but then, youâd had him inside you not too long ago and the memory of the things youâd done, the things youâd said, which you wouldnât admit even under threat of perjury, were enough to make you almost blush.
âWe should hit the road,â you said dumbly, schooling your features into an unbothered mask.
âYeah. Iâm sure the others have already made it to Ms. Carterâs farm.â
âWell⌠merry Christmas.â
âYeah, merry Christmas.â
You opened your door, settled into your seat. You were about to pull the door closed when Tyler stopped it, hand closed around the top.
âCan I call you, after the holidays?â
âSure.â
âOkay.â
âCool.â
âCool.â
He laughed. âWhoâs holding the hot potato now, you or me?â
âI think weâre sharing this one,â you replied.
âI donât mind that.â
âYeah,â you said, âneither do I.â
He smiled at you for a while, then closed your door and watched you drive off. You followed his movements in the rearview until your paths diverged, then turned up the radio.
âMerry Christmas Eve, one and all! Itâs a gorgeous one out thereâwe couldnât have asked for better weather. Hereâs one just for you. Iâm sure you know it, so sing along: itâs Dean Martin and itâs our âWinter Wonderland,â right here, in the heart of good olâ OklahomaâŚâ

Bad Santa

Summary:Â You get an unexpected gift from your boss.
Character: Pete Brenner
Day Fourteen of the December Daze Challenge.
Prompt - "um, I don't think this gift is meant for me"Â
Note:Â As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. Iâm happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging.
âYou got this for me?â Pete asks as he pushes his hair back. He seems surprised by the simple present. Itâs not much. All you could spare from your budget. Â
Working at a startup doesnât offer much more than what pays the bills, sometimes less, and with the holiday season, funds are even sparser. You shrug and clasp your hands behind your back. You were nervous enough to give it to him. Pete can be nice, but he can also be an utter nightmare.Â
âSure, uh, itâs nothing big,â you assure him.Â
He takes the small gift bag and looks inside. He rustles the tissue paper with his fingers and leans back as he tugs the stuffing free. His sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, his forearms tensing as he pokes inside. He pulls out monogram cufflinks. They werenât very expensive but the Etsy seller handmade them.Â
âWow, these are... nice,â he says.Â
âI wasnât sure... you might need them soon, right?âÂ
âSure will,â his eyes sparkle at the golden cufflinks. âWeâre gonna hit soon, sweetheart.âÂ
He drops them back in the bag and sets it down. You lean back on your heel. He doesnât call you âsweetheartâ, no, only the women he tries to sell too. Heâs snagged a few to keep the startup going but heâs chased just as many away.Â
âJust remembered, I got a thing,â he checks his watch.Â
âOh?â You shy away as he unrolls his sleeves and buttons them.Â
âDonât worry, Iâll be back before closing time,â he assures you.Â
And whenâs that? Each day ends later and later.Â
âOkay,â you utter.Â
âHold my calls,â he shrugs into his jacket and shoves his phone in his pocket.Â
âYes, sir,â you turn and retreat out of his office.Â
You sidle behind your desk and sit. Thereâs not many calls you need to field as it is. You donât know if heâs optimistic, deluded, or something more concerning. His âvisionâ seems more and more like a shell. Or as your friend Evie called it, âa frontâ.Â
âGood girl,â he praises with a wink as he follows you out. Â
He snatches his coat off the rack by the door and stomps out without another word. Youâre relieved at the solace. You like those times when you can just piddle around. Trying to look busy when thereâs nothing to do is surprisingly hard work.Â
You lean your head in your hand as you scroll through your phone. Your family chat is blowing up and you continue to flick away the notifications. Youâve given up trying to mediate the ongoing argument about the Secret Santa. It never works out.Â
You glance up now and again at the computer. Thereâs a few emails, most phishing, and the phone remains dormant. You feel more and more like a placeholder; or a dupe. You blame Evie for making you so paranoid.Â
The windows dim with the evening hue and you swivel in your chair impatiently. You twiddle your fingers and stare at the minutes ticking by in the corner of the monitor. You lurch back as the door opens in a bluster and Pete stomps in with a paper crinkle.Â
You look over at him, taking a moment to flip back into social mode.Â
âOh, hey, everything okay?â You ask.Â
âYeah, yeah,â he turns his back to you and sets something by his feet before he strips out of his coat. He hangs it over yours and bends to pick up the item you canât see. âYou know, I couldnât just... you went to all that trouble.â He spins and struts towards you, lifting the white paper bag with a wiggle, âMerry Christmas.âÂ
âOh, uh, Mr. Brenner, you didnât-- I didnât expect you to--âÂ
âYeah, well, Iâm a bit of an idiot sometimes.â He holds the bag out over your desk. âKinda a jackass too.âÂ
âRight, um, really itâs--â he drops the bag on the desk and you swallow. âThanks, uh, thatâs so... sweet.âÂ
You stand slowly and reluctantly take the bag. You feel awkward and a bit guilty. You didnât give him a gift to get one. You just did it because it felt expected.Â
âGo on,â he stays where his is, one hip jutted out as he grips it, âI think youâll like it.âÂ
You sniff and push the top of the bag open with your fingers. Thereâs a box inside. You reach through and lift out the white cardboard adorned with a pink ribbon. You set it down and carefully untie the bow, intensely aware of his gaze.Â
You pull the lid off and reveal the neatly folded tissue paper. You pause and glance up at Pete. He smirks as he watches you. Something about his expression makes you nervous.Â
You push apart the tissue and reveal the bright red sheer fabric trimmed in white fur. Your lashes flutter and you squeak. You giggle and look up at Pete as you try to line up lid with the box and cover the lingerie.Â
âUh, sir, I don't think this gift is meant for me. It must be for your wife--âÂ
âItâs for you,â he insists. âWifeâs gone. Ex, soon enough.âÂ
âOh, I didnât-- Iâm sorry, sir. Thatâs awful.âÂ
âYeah, pretty down about it,â his lip thin and he reaches to brush the stubble around his chin. âSo why donât you help cheer me up.âÂ
He winks again and it crawls over you like a shiver. He canât be serious. You laugh again but his intent gaze doesnât falter.Â
âSir, I canât-- thatâs...â you can barely think or breathe. He canât be serious.Â
âCome on, letâs have some holiday fun,â he purrs and leans forward to put his hands on your desk.Â
âUh, oh, thatâs... sorry, sir, but Iâm not... Iâm sorry to hear about your wife but I canât... do that.âÂ
âYou canât?â He tilts his head and pokes his tongue into his cheek. âYou know, I canât return that.âÂ
âUm, Iâm sorry,â you try to slide the box across the desk and he catches it, his large hands covering yours.Â
âJust put it on for me, please,â he squeezes, âI just wanna look. Iâve been so lonely.âÂ
âNo, sir, thatâs not--â your heart pounds behind your ears. You canât believe this is happening. âThatâs not appropriate. I... I gotta get going--âÂ
He doesnât let you go. Even as you try to tug away. His grip is unbreakable. You whimper and stare up at him helplessly.Â
âI know you got no one to go home to, sweetheart,â his voice deepens, âbut Iâll give you a choice, huh? You can go put that on or you can get naked. Up to you.âÂ
âSir,â you try to yank free again. âStop--âÂ
He hooks his hands around your wrists and wrenches you down. Your stomach crushes the box beneath it as he releases one of your arms and grabs the back of your neck. He holds you, bent over the desk, as your toes slide on the floor.Â
He steps closer as he balls your hair in his hand and forces your head up. He pushes your face into his pants, wiggling his hips as he rubs his rigid bulge against you. You whimper and grab at his grasp helplessly.Â
âI got another gift for you right here,â he growls. âSo be a good girl and Iâll let you unwrap it.â He twitches and groans as the roots of your hair burn. âWhatâs it going to be, hm? You gonna sit on Santaâs lap or is he gonna have to bend you over his knee?âÂ
You sniffle and press against his stomach, âplease sir, Iâll beâOw! I'll do it,â you murmur, âplease, youâre hurting me.âÂ
âThatâs it, you better be nice, baby,â he lets you go and stretches his hand across the front of his pants. âYou donât wanna get on my naughty list.âÂ
You recoil and slide back onto your feet. You rub your head as your scalp ripples hotly. He bites his lips as he eyes you up and down.Â
âGo on, get yourself all wrapped up for Santa,â he grits.Â
You flinch and stare at him, begging with your eyes. Your eyes flit to the door and back to him. You have no choice. You shakily take the box and turn away.Â
He shifts as you come around the desk and as you pass him, he taps your ass. You trip but keep going. You scurry into the tiny bathroom on the other side of the office and hide behind the door.Â
You toss the box onto the small counter and stare at your frightened reflection. You canât believe this. Why? Â
You sway on your legs and wring your hand. What do you do?Â
âSweetheart, donât keep Santa waiting,â he taunts from outside. You can hear the friction of his hand on the door.Â
You squeak and grip your head as your panic swells. No, no, no. You cringe and brace yourself. Youâre going to do this. Because youâre weak. Because youâre scared.Â
You undress, piece by piece. You open the box again and clumsily unfold the body suit. You shimmy into the sheer fabric and hook the straps over your shoulders. You step back to see yourself in the mirror. You canât!Â
You spin away with the vision of your reflection seared into your head. The fabric is so sheer, you can see your nipples, and even the slit of your cunt. You hug yourself as your eyes wet with horrified tears.Â
âCome out and play, baby girl,â Pete wiggles the handle from the other side.Â
âPlease,â you plead through the door. âI canât--âÂ
The handle jerks up then down, âget the fuck out here!â Â
His voice cuts through and makes you wince. Your lip trembles as you reach to flip the lock up. Your body moves from fear. He pushes the door open and you step back.Â
âMm, baby, come out here,â he reaches for you and tugs your wrist away from your chest. He takes both your hands and unbends your arms as he draws you out into the flourescent lights. âDamn, who knew you were hiding all that? Keeping that all to yourself.âÂ
âPlease, I... Iâm scared.âÂ
âI know, baby, thatâs why Iâm so hard,â he snickers and yanks on so you fall against him. He snakes his arm around you and cups your ass in his hand. âWhy didnât you give me this for Christmas, huh?âÂ
âSir...âÂ
âMmm,â he leans in and inhales your scent as his nose tickles your temples. âDonât worry, Santaâs gonna give you everything,â he grinds his pelvis into you, âa nice fucking yule log to fill you up.âÂ

i like to think another reason soap and ghost trusted each other so quickly is because they could smell the low income upbringing on each other.
ghost was a slum kid through and through, with shoes that felt perpetually too large and cigarette holes through his hand-me-down jackets. if his mum didnât have time to cook, or if her hands shook too violently to handle silverware, he was the one to scrape together enough passable nutrients to feed tommy, and some nights himself. he was born into back alley business and when his time came, if the worms didnât get him, the stray cats could feast on his carcass for the next two generations.
soap grew up in a full house. when his da left with that droopy-eyed, pale sack of infections he deemed more important than his wife of seven years and their five children, his mum and older sister were the sole providers in his life. he learned very early on to make do with what he had unless he couldnât, splitting funds for so many people, along with bills and groceries and clothes and school supplies, was an enormous task that he couldnât very well make more difficult like the rest of his sisters seemed to want to with a clean conscience.
they both see it instantly â soap, the way ghost refused to ask for anything; and ghost, the way soap only asked for the cheapest, weakest, most useless version of what he needed, still with a guilty bite to his bottom lip. the way they both (metaphorically) lick their plates clean, afraid to waste a single crumb; the way each of them preferred to mend instead of simply buying something new like gaz; the way they both opt for one practical and one frivolous gift each holiday for both useage and enjoyment.
itâs easy to relate to the anxious pinch of eyebrows at the till when youâve been too involved in financial discussions your whole life, and even easier to remind each other that money wasnât a problem anymore. soap could remind ghost that he didnât have to conserve anymore, and ghost could remind soap that he didnât have to buy scratchy clothes or food brands he didnât like just because they were cheaper.
and even if ghost didnât want to ask for something he wanted, soap would get it anyway. and even if soap made a fuss of how much they threw in their cart, ghost would throw more in anyway.
because they can. because no matter their financial worry, they have someone who will understand and make everything feel okay again.

Snakes on a post
Another particularly long answer dump since i, once again, have a backlog of things to potentially answer |D
âď¸For commonly asked qs please see my BTD FAQ
Got jumpscared with my own old art for a hot minute there LAUGHS.
(For those wondering, the naga doodle from here was attached to the ask)
That is every other Royal that exists in the Nether and also at least some of the demons that challenged him for his Royal title lol.
Believe me, no one was or is more surprised then me XD;
So, the thing about where Rire's ichor manifests is that it kinda exists and doesn't exist at the same time. Meaning that his upper back is where the manifestation point is anchored, BUT it can still manifest with a bit of space in between it and his back hence why it will manifest over his clothes and not through them.
So if you touch where the manifestation point is sans the ichor, than you are just straight up touching his back. With the ichor, he still gets sensory input from the tentacles to his back but it's a lot more soft and muted esp the further away it gets from him. As you've seen implied though, he would feel a very sharp pain if a great deal of damage was done to the ichor where it clusters at the manifestation point, since he'd DEF be feeling that straight in his back lol.
He is definitely a top and the only way he would bottom for anybody is if they somehow forced him to.
Ah i knew i'd answered this a long time ago [finally found it]! Holy crosses (those that have been blessed) can also burn him but they would need to be in contact with him the entire time. Being a Royal he also has more of a tolerance to these than normal demons.
Well, unless said person actually has the undeniable ability to make good on their words, Rire would just stand there rather genially with that little smile he sometimes has and let them finish.
And then he might use them as reverse suggestions for dealing with said person (why would you give him any ideas!!?)
both
In BTD canon it is quite possible that they actually haven't in person. But we are using creative license here haha.
Rire heals a lot faster than a human. Cain is not my character so I don't know how his stacks up.
I've grouped these asks cos they kind of have similar answers - 360° (jk sorry sorry to the second q that is just a very common spelling mistake and I couldn't resist XD; )
Now, even though we mashed all the characs together in BTD, they all actually come from different storylines and so their canons outside the "BTD canon" may differ. This tends to bleed in. With this in mind:
The rules of Rire's canon (eg the concept of Battle Royales and how to become a Royal) don't apply to Cain. Anyway, they don't live in the same place either.
Cain is canonically the oldest and most OP character in BTD lol so yes he is stronger than Rire - you might've noticed, but Rire is never in the same drawing as Cain voluntarily. I play with this along with the "natural weakness" aspect - which I've also referred to as scissors-paper-rock rules XD Basically; demons beat humans, angels beat demons (purely because demons have weakness against holiness).
It would (be insane) but I hope you are not looking at me to fulfil this :d
Not really
His coronation day is a public holiday in his sector so yes XD
Aww thank you very much for your interest! â§(´â˝ď˝)⌠It's really cool that some of you guys want to actually fund such a thing - I'd have thought you'd have enough of him killing you in BTD1 XD Unfortunately, I have no plans for a Rire game at the moment as I'm working on a webcomic which looks like it will take up all my free time (that being said, he will be in the webcomic at some point).
Nope! Although i can kinda see why you might think that lol.
Whatever that one is where he doesn't particularly care what someone else identifies as. It really makes no difference to him or how he will act.
There are viruses in the Nether that if contracted could potentially kill you, yes. Part of being a Royal is becoming a lot more robust than normal Demons though. As for if/when Rire dies, I dunno maybe either in a Battle Royale somewhere thousands of years down the line or by old age (which is rare for a Royal but not impossible if you play your cards right).
If you are asking if he has a heat/rut of some sort, he does not |D
#boyfriend to death#art#rire answer dump#answer dump#doodle#long post#decided to actually redesign what a naga rire would viably look like since the old design was bad XD

The Boys Preference: Being Spoiled
Requested: hi hi! good eve/mornin'! hope you're doing alright! May i request The Boys + Soldier Boy with rich!reader spoiling them (with expensive gifts & kisses) cause the Boys went through alot? reader isn't a supe (TBH, all of them need therapy)wild thing rich!reader did was they did not mention they were rich as heck and just didn't mind at all if it meant kinda.. helping the Boys out? you can delete this ask if this is a bit difficult to do!!! đ - @phoenixwrightsnokiacellphone
A/N: I hope you like it my love!!! Feedback is always appreciated đ
Butcher loves being spoiled. He didn't grow up with a lot of money, and even life with Becca was tight when it came to expenses. When you bring him over to your apartment and he sees just how wealthy you are, he's all for being spoiled. He doesn't want a new wardrobe or fancy electronics. He wants big guns and weapons and tech that'll help them take down Homelander. He loves going to hotels for date nights and getting room service and relaxing with a massage. When you find out he's sick you immediately hire the best doctors in the world to prolong hid life as long as they're capable of. That annoys him a little, since he'd rather live in denial, but you care about him too much to watch him die. Because he is Butcher, at the end when he takes the virus he also takes quite a bit from your safe with cash, leaving the jewelry, so that he can make it to wherever he's going.
Hughie would be really uncomfortable at first. He wouldn't really put two and two together and thinks you're just spending way too much money on him. Once he realizes it's not as big a deal as he fears, he still isn't 100% okay with it. You reassure him so much that you want to do this, that you like doing it, that he deserves to be spoiled. But he didn't grow up with a lot of money and so he still freaks out a little when he sees the bill from dinner or a receipt from a shopping spree in which you bought The Boys all non-blood covered wardrobes. He might sneak a five or ten dollar bill into your wallet to "make up for it" of which you are way better at sneaking back into his wallet so he can get a coffee or a sweet treat if he wants. You love spoiling him and getting him the things he not only needs but wants. He's been through a lot. You feel like it's the least you can do.
Annie is also pretty uncomfortable at first. She doesn't want to make it a big deal, but her childhood and her dad leaving with her family's money makes her think you'll do the same. If she gets too comfortable, you might pull the rug out from under her and do the same. It takes a lot of reassurance, but eventually, she realizes you're not like him at all. She appreciates the funding for Starlight House and all the financial assistance you can offer. She'd rather you spoil her through her organization or with her friends rents than solely on her. Still, you find ways. She loves these chocolate covered strawberries from this one gourmet bakery in the city that (somehow) ends up on her desk occasionally without a note or anything. She loves them and you love her. It's a win win situation. And, of course, you take her on the occasional expensive dinner where the hill is no issue and you always get dessert.
M.M. makes it clear he doesn't want any of it. MAYBE the occasional fancy dinner at a place he could never afford, but he doesn't want it to become a regular thing. Marvin has a nice apartment and a relatively comfortable lifestyle for what he does. He doesn't want to be spoiled in any way and will go halves on just about everything as long as he is able to. You try to respect his wishes and only really spoil him on holidays with things he might not need, but he has been eyeing like a new watch or a bigger TV. He really doesn't love the idea of you spending a lot of him and, more often than not, sends you to his friends where you can give to the group rather than him personally. You never take offense, understanding where he's coming from.
Frenchie would love to be spoiled. He never was as a kid and had to he pretty crafty when he found himself in New York. He has absolutely no problem with a little spoiling. You definitely upgrade his lab and technology, not that he needs it, but rather because you want to. He could do anything with a paperclip and a rubber band if he wanted, but you want him to he able to work with everything as his disposal. Because you're willing to pay a pretty penny for just about anything, he's not shy asking for small stuff: new headphones to listen to music, a new phone after his was lost, etc. Big things like rent or things like that he makes sure you know he has handled. He definitely wants to spoil you back in the ways that he can, especially when it comes to food. He can make scraps into a five course meal with some time and a little creativity.
Kimiko isn't sure how to feel about it. She knows you want to spoil her and help her and her friends. She knows it wouldn't hurt to upgrade the hideout or the office. She isn't sure she deserves it, though. Of course her friends do. She could never stop you from doing for them, but she has a lot of doubts when it comes to her. She definitely doesn't like grand gestures. They freak her out too much. She likes small, intimate gifts and gestures, like a new pair of the latest headphones so her music has the best quality sound or a new pair of boots after hers get drenched in blood and never feel clean enough. She also loves getting body products like new bubble soaps and sugar scrubs. You start a little collection, so she has some to choose from. Knowing she smells nice and feels clean is a big way you spoil her.
Bonus! Soldier Boy has no issues being spoiled whatsoever. He loves it. At a time, he had more money than he knew what to do with. He'd throw huge parties and get all the best drugs and most expensive booze. Nothing was off limits. He might not have his money, but he has yours, and he intends to do the same thing. You love it. His parties are legendary, and you know the only one he's going to bed with at the end of the night is you. You spoil him in other ways, of course. You like seeing him get all dressed up in fancy suits and expensive clothes. And he loves a good steak. He's not one for small gifts, though. He doesn't want an expensive watch or the latest phone. He likes grand gestures instead, and you're more than willing to do that for him.

okay so as a federal worker, i tell you this not to make you panic but to give you time to do what you need to do:
it's the holiday season. in addition to the federal holidays, federal workers build up leave throughout the year. the longer you've been with the federal government, the more leave you accumulate. this time of year, many federal workers will be taking their "use or lose" leave, aka the leave they've accumulated that's over the 240 hour cap you can carry into the next calendar year.
that means if you have any renewals or want to apply to anything that requires the federal government, DO IT NOW. many departments are already understaffed but this time of year? yeah, skeleton crews are the norm.
please be patient. you can check in every week or two to see where your stuff is but please be patient. many of us are going to be working our butts off in the next three months to ensure your stuff gets done. but we're only human. if you have an agency number, calling is often better than emailing. yes, even if you have to wait on the line for a while.
notaries can be extremely backed up. if you have an appointment which requires a notary's signature, make sure that you have every single thing ready the second you walk in. you don't want to have to come back.
understand that the ship of state turns slowly. we do have a lot of mechanisms in place to keep things from falling apart completely HOWEVER this time the Executive Leadership is directly coming at us with the intention of fully dismantling certain departments. chief on their list that i've seen is the department of education. if you have a special needs child in a special ed program or are one yourself, check to see who's funding the program (feds, state, local, etc) and plan accordingly. if the feds pull out their money, you need to know who's handling the gap and what happens if it can't be filled. that goes for other programs like housing.
if the republicans control the house, senate, and white house, expect them to defund everything you care about. the only spending i can see them increasing is the department of defense and border patrol. everything else? huge budget crunch. if you think the government is slow now, is unresponsive now, oh boy, just you wait. this will send a shock wave through the economy - the feds are huge spenders in many areas (sometimes the only thing keeping places afloat). much of the government is too big and unwieldy to dismantle all at once (particularly the pieces entwined with big business) but that doesn't mean they can't launch giant holes into the things they really hate. plan accordingly.
the fda director will try to ban sending abortion pills in the mail. plan accordingly. does this step on the usps' toes? yes. do they care? nope, republicans have been trying to privatize them for years. plan accordingly.
if you want to know the baseline fuckery you'll be expected to deal with, the department of veterans' affairs was shadow run by marvel executives for two years last time. i'm not joking. the white house is going to bypass any pretense of confirming executive leadership by making every single one of them "acting director of such and such." those don't require congressional approval.
if you're a dreamer and you've applied for some kind of federal relief, i would advise you to be extremely careful. your information is in a federal database and the republicans want to round up everyone of latino descent. they've already confirmed that they want to deport whole families irrespective of citizenship to "stop family separation."
stay calm and plan accordingly.

What do you think a wizarding wedding would look like, and what do you think Lucius' and Narcissa's specifically looked like?
The book does show us Fleur and Bill's wedding, but that was a wartime shotgun-ish wedding in the peripherals of the story's focus. I'm also not ever sure how much of the details there are things joanne really thought about and decided to include in her representation of a Magical wedding, and how much of it are just modern social customs she might have considered the forever universal default and put in the book.
Narcissa and Lucius also seem to be the rare fictional couple who'd actually enjoy all the pedantry and tradition and specificities in a wedding to me. Seeing as you're writing a fic with them in it, I thought you'd probably already thought about this aspect of worldbuilding/character writing, so I hope you don't mind me asking abt it. Thanks and have a great day!!
Okay, I love this ask, and I'm going to lay it all out, but first I want to lay out my Reasoning.
Here are my rules, when it comes to expanding on/filling in the Harry Potter world building:
ONE: If weâre dealing with any sort of political or social structure, my reference is England, year 1700.Â
This does make sense with the backstory we get: the Wizarding World split away from the Muggle world in the late 1600s, wizards live a really long time, and wizards also didnât need an industrial revolution (because magic filled the place of tech) so they wouldnât have gotten any of the social changes that happened because of the industrial revolution.Â
Also, this particular time period generally fits with what we see on the page. Education, politics, the police force, mental health care - it all seems to work in a very 1700s way. We donât have any electricity, thereâs no industrialization. (Like, Umbridgeâs pamphlets are made by hand. I mean obviously theyâre made by magic, but an individualâs magic, theyâre not assembled in a magical factory.) So when Draco brings up a âmuseumâ... it makes sense to me that heâs not not thinking of a modern museum with a ticketing department running off grants and public funding, full of typed-out little plaques written by scientists and historians, telling you the provenance of whatever youâre looking at. If we went to a museum in Wizarding World, I would expect the type of museum you saw in 1700: a cabinet of curiosities assembled by one single wealthy collector, arranged in some eccentric way, handwritten labels or no labels at all, very probably in a wing of a private house. That feels correct and in-universe to me. So⌠whenever someone asks me something like âhow do taxes work in the Harry Potter universe,â I take 1700 England as a starting place, and go from there.Â
TWO: If weâre dealing with aesthetic details or inventions, I draw from England 1700 - 1880
There isnât much thatâs Victorian in the world building⌠but thereâs plenty in the set dressing. We see lots of 1800s fashion: women wearing hats with birds and flowers on them, men wearing bowler hats and top hats. There are 1800s hedge mazes, most of the holiday decorations are from the late 1800s, weâve got radios and trains⌠and Iâm completely fine with all that. It seems to me that if youâre a wizard walking through the Muggle world, itâs a lot easier to see someone wearing a cool hat, and say âI would like a hat like thatâ - versus walking around and picking up the concept of, idk unions. So cameras are okay: theyâre 1800s. Note that Rita Skeeterâs photographer Bozo has a magical version of a 1850s camera

while Muggle born Colin Creevey has⌠a modded 1930s camera? To communicate that heâs got a foot in both worlds.Â

My point is, if you saw someone riding a bicycle in Harry Potter, you would assume they brought it in from the Muggle world. Bicycles showed up in England in the 1880s, so thatâs slightly too late. Itâs important to the feel of the world to keep up a good chunk of separation between the aesthetics of the Wizarding World, and the aesthetics of the muggle world.
THREE: Gender politics/gendered customs basically donât exist
This is one of the things that makes Harry Potter a J. K. Rowling fantasy world. Obviously, JKR the person has a lot to unpack about gender politics, and there are all kinds of Doylist differences between the way male and female characters are treated in the Harry Potter books. But in universe, there is no Watsonian benefit to being a guy or being a girl in any particular situation. We get gendered bathrooms (although the prefectsâ bathroom and the locker rooms seem co-ed), gendered fashions, gendered dorms⌠and thatâs basically it. Â
Of course there are some very old and baked in gendered things I doubt JKR even thought about⌠a woman taking her husbandâs last name for instance. (Honestly - I would have loved a posh doubled-barreled name for Draco. Draco Malfoy-Black sounds quite sharp and public schooly.) Thereâs a thing where Dumbledore mentions that the Blacks prefer it when a guy inherits⌠but in the same breath, heâs completely convinced Bellatrix is about to inherit, so clearly that isnât that important.
The only other example I can think of is the way weâre told the unicorns prefer the female students. But, the boys in Professor Grubbly-Plankâs class unanimously think this is bullshit, and I would argue that the framing of the book supports this read. We havenât seen magic work like this before, so did Professor G-P get it wrong? And/or just doesnât want to deal with the boys? Presumably this is why we are happy Hagrid is coming back
FOUR: There is basically no organized religion/spirituality in the Wizarding World.Â
The narrative does a lot of work to not tell us who the random officiant at Dumbledore's funeral and Bill and Fleurâs wedding is. Who is he? Who does he represent? How do you find him? How does he have authority to do this? Not important, doesnât matter, keep moving along. We are definitely in a world where there is a holiday named Christmas⌠but itâs like the women taking their husband's name thing, that seems too baked into JKRâs worldview to question. But there is no mention of any religious dimension, itâs just presents and feasts and balls.Â
If Iâm writing something thatâs interested in what these guys consider to be the sacred underpinnings of their world (like something focusing on a wedding, for instanceâŚ) then I think I would end up expanding on important magical rituals. Iâm thinking Fidelius, Unbreakable Vow, sacrificial magic. Not for nothing, but considering how much importance the moment where Severus and Narcissa make an Unbreakable Vow is given by both the narrative and the characters⌠it feels more like a wedding than the wedding does, and Iâm not even a Severus/Narcissa shipper.Â
*
So when it comes to weddings⌠Iâve honestly found it uniquely difficult to research the history there, because a lot of people are very motivated to suggest that every wedding tradition has some deep, meaningful ancient origin - or that it was just kind of always that way. Take the concept of a âbest manâ and the term âbest man" for instance. That starts showing up in the 1780s (so itâs a social custom that doesnât make my 1700 deadline.) Harry is of course filtering everything through his POV, but if I were writing a wedding thing, Iâd want to say that Sirius is filling a different position. Like âgodfatherâ seems a very legally important role in the wizarding society, so lean into that. Maybe the âbest manâ equivalent at a wizard wedding is the person who youâve picked to get custody of your kids if you die.Â
We also see things like white wedding dresses and matching bridesmaid dresses being treated as an absolute given at Fleurâs wedding, when both of those things pretty much only exist because Queen Victoria did them in 1840. One interesting thing is that JKR doesnât seem to do an exchange of rings, and sheâs changed up that moment to make it more reminiscent of (I think) a handfasting ceremony? Which is fine, I can work with that. (Also rings are just treated very negatively across the board in the Harry Potter books. No idea why.)
But, in-universe, the Bill/Fleur wedding is really hard to use as a model for what a typical pureblood Wizarding wedding looks like. For all the reasons Anon mentions: Itâs war time, it was put together very quickly, Harry is not paying the most attention, we donât get to see the whole thing. I would also add in the fact that the Weasleys are political radicals, and at that point especially would be very politically motivated to have a wedding that looks more Muggle.Â
Okay. If I were writing a pureblood wedding⌠like Lucius and Narcissaâs wedding⌠what would I do.
First, I donât think I want a typical wedding from the year 1700. I want 1700 does renaissance/medieval. (Kind of Sir Walter Scott.) I like this because it brings in/explains the Merlin thing - the purebloods all use âMerlinâ as an oath, so I guess Merlin (and Arthur, and that kind of romanticized middle ages) is important to them culturally. Also, medieval influences are going to make your wedding feel impressive and established⌠which is exactly what the Malfoys are after. Make sure everyone knows what an old family they are. All these pureblood families have crests, so put them everywhere, front and center. The decorations should be banners and flags with the crests of everyone attending, no florals.
I also love the idea of fossilized fashions, old-fashioned clothes that donât come out except during a very ceremonial, traditional occasion. (Think of the ways that veils used to be a pretty normal part of a lady's wardrobe, but now you only see them during weddings.) Iâd have it so that during a wizard wedding⌠all the ladies bring out their long, draping, evil enchantress sleeves and the guys are supposed to wear half-capes and swords. Itâs also a good excuse to bring out all the really old family jewelry, of which I am sure the Malfoys have buckets.
I also want this to be a very magical wedding. Like, there are parts of it you straight-up could not participate in as muggle, because I think (sadly) that would be the vibe during the timeline of the main books. Weddings are for showing off, and part of that would be showing off your magical prowess. Iâm thinking - light the dance floor on fire before the first dance, and then the couple has to perform a Flame Freezing charm. This tradition started as a screw-you to the Muggles after the witch trials⌠but now everybody just kinda does it because it looks really cool when the newlyweds dance on a bed of flame. Oh, and weâre definitely doing medieval-style palm-touching dances. No waltzing for the first dance at a traditional Malfoy wedding.
And theyâll go all out for the wedding feast, which will be long. The 1700s and middle ages were both really into food that did stuff - food that transformed, or food that looked like other food, or food that had birds flying out of it. So just lean into that times a million with magic.
I am also such a sucker for slightly sentient magical houses, and Harry Potter absolutely has some of that, with the way Hogwarts (the building) has various ways to fight back against enemies and infiltrators. So I think a Malfoy wedding would definitely be taking place at Malfoy Manor, and that the house itself would be a part of the proceedings in some way. Like itâs got to accept the new family member (we know, from little moments like Umbridge being barred from Dumbledoreâs office⌠that sometimes magical buildings just reject you.) Integrating a new person into the new space would be a multi-step process. Maybe thereâs a ceremony where they present the new person with the family spell books, and another one where they present them with keys to various parts of the house, etc.
You could tie this in with the idea of a bedding ceremony (which also hits my medieval + 1700s markers.) Maybe the house changes in some way when the couple first sleeps together, like it redecorates with the belongings of the person moving in, or grows them a rose garden or observatory so they feel more at home. I bet itâs fun for the guests to stick around and watch this change happen. (A trope like this might be especially fun in an arranged marriage or marriage-law type story.)
Iâm thinking this would also be a very long wedding, and the wedding party is probably staying at the house for a week or so beforehand. Thatâs part of the flex, the familyâs ability to adequately pay host to so many people for such a long period of time. Like thatâs what a house like Malfoy Manor is for, thereâs a reason those places were functionally small hotels. If at the end my old-school pureblood wedding feels like a modern muggle wedding... I donât think Iâve done my job. A Muggleborn whoâs been invited ought to have culture shock.
And yes. It goes without saying that Lucius and Narcissa would have eaten up all this pomp and circumstance, with a spoon.
