3/9/2020 #0028 Journey to the desert Vol.15 Howard Nelson
Vol.16

Native American Jewelry: A Fleeting History
American jewelry is renowned worldwide for its versatile style and diverse design. Designed by original artisans for many thousands of years, the jewelry of the Native Americans is affected by the land, the spiritual ideas, the legends, and the cultures of each individual nation, from the American of the Southwest to the Northeast. These jewelry pieces have been designed since the earliest times of the Inca, Aztecs, Maya, and Anasazi.
It is an ancient art form
This native jewelry dates back at least as far as 10,000 BC. The Paleo-Indians, who were the original peoples to enter and reside in the Americas, utilized shells, rocks, antlers, bones, porcupine feathers, and similar elements to create wearable art. The tribes over the North American continent began to use whatever organic elements were available to them to design accessories. Pendants were ornately created from fish and animal bones, coral, shells. Besides, stones were shaped to create beads to adorn clothing or to make necklaces. Later on, the creation of jewelry became more complicated. Different elements like animal teeth, turquoise, copper, semi-precious stones, carved wood, silver, animal claws, pearls, and abalone were used as well.
Function of jewelry
The property of the innate peoples of the Americas traditionally had to be portable. The jewelry was not just for decoration and embellishment. It was as much a wearable bank for the owner. It also represented rank and social class within a tribe. Traditionally, Native Americans used jewelry to flaunt their rank, their history, and their identity. Jewelry was used to communicate traditions between the generations. Jewelry also had an essential role in trade between tribes, as styles and patterns varied between the various nations.
Navajo jewelry
For instance, the Navajo people worked mainly with turquoise and silver, stamping crescent-shaped naja necklaces and fixing them with bright turquoise stones. These pieces were recognized symbols of power and were worn by prominent members of the tribe. Concha jewelry was also trendy. This form of art could be observed on everything from necklaces to belts and hair accessories. You can have this type of jewelry from famous native American jewelry artists.
Zuni Jewelry
At the end of the 1800s, the Zuni people started making jewelry of their own with a center on lapidary work. Zuni lapidarist was amazingly skilled at setting and decorating stones into metal. They created an opportunity for Zuni and Navajo artists to work together to design versatile jewelry. Sometimes, a Navajo silversmith would form the detailed silver piece; then, the Zuni lapidarist would adorn it with gorgeous stones.
Basically, the jewelry made by Native American people was designed only for members of the tribe, but as the twentieth century advanced and silversmiths’ talents grew, more and more jewelry was sold to traders and peoples outside the tribe.
When you observe a piece of Native American jewelry, the stamped metal, stones, and the method used to make it all have a deep meaning, a connection to history.

3/8/2020 #0027 Journey to the desert Vol.14 Howard Nelson
Vol.15
