Naumburg Cathedral
Tumblr media
Today, we're setting out on a virtual journey to the heart of Germany, where the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Naumburg Cathedral stands as a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture, art, and history.
Naumburg Cathedral, also known as Naumburger Dom St. Peter und St. Paul, is a striking embodiment of Gothic architecture. Its soaring spires and intricate design make it a marvel to behold.
In 2018, this cathedral was granted UNESCO World Heritage status, recognizing its exceptional cultural and architectural value. It's a place where history, art, and spirituality converge.
The cathedral's architecture is a testament to the artistry of medieval craftsmen. The west choir, with its stunning sculptures and intricate detailing, is a highlight of the structure.
One of the most famous features of the cathedral is the "Uta of Naumburg" sculpture. Uta, a noblewoman, is depicted in striking detail and is a symbol of medieval female beauty and grace.
The cathedral's stained glass windows are exquisite, providing a beautiful interplay of light and color that enhances the spiritual experience of the interior.
Naumburg Cathedral has played a crucial role in German history and culture. It has witnessed significant events, including the crowning of German kings and emperors.
Today, the cathedral is not just a historical relic but a cultural hub that hosts events, exhibitions, and concerts, celebrating its rich heritage and the enduring value of Gothic art and architecture.
In conclusion, Naumburg Cathedral is a gem of Gothic splendor that stands as a testament to the artistic and spiritual legacy of the medieval era. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it invites us to appreciate the profound cultural and architectural significance of cathedrals in the history of Europe. When you're ready to immerse yourself in a world of architectural grandeur and historical significance, Naumburg Cathedral is a destination that promises to inspire and captivate. 🏰🌹📚

Sunday 12 July 1998 - France wins the 1998 FIFA World Cup - long ride home through Leipzig
Hi everyone
That was some Love Parade, yesterday 20 years ago in Berlin, wasn't it?Sunday 12 July 1998 would be part three and the final part of that weekend.  That day I needed to return to Munich later that day but there were sights to be seen.  I think I woke up about 8 AM, had a shower, ate breakfast and checked out at 9 AM.  With my clothes bag and backpack, I took the S-Bahn to Zoologischer Garten, where I deposited the clothes bag in a locker for 5 D-Mark, and went further on the U-2 to Bismarckstraße. I wanted to also see Spandau so I took the U-7, for many stops.
The U-Bahn Station Rathaus Spandau, was nicely built, likely from the 1920s when stations were a more art-deco style.  I wish I could take photographs, but the camera battery was almost completely empty, and I had not thought at the time, to buy a new one as I did not have a warning until the previous day that the battery was low.  You cannot use regular AA batteries or similar, but rather a special "CR123A".  It is sort of a U-shaped battery, and cannot be bought just anywhere.  Electronics stores would have them.  The Samsung Evoca 115 is one of the finest point-and-shoot 35 mm film cameras with autofocus, fill-flash, date-time-stamp and so many more features, but the CR123A was not the best choice for batteries, I don't think.
I returned by Jungfernheide and took the S-41 ring line to Bundesplatz.  It was almost 12 PM but I was getting hungry.  There was a Chinese food stand and the chili chicken with noodles looked good, so I ordered a small portion, for about 6 D-Mark.  Normally I would order a Döner Kebab for that price but I thought I would have something different. I had to watch my time, as the train back to Munich would leave Berlin Zoologischer Garten at 3 PM.  That was the Sommer Spezial train that I paid 89 D-Mark for, and not use a day field from my Eurailpass.  From Bundesplatz I took the U-9 to Zoologischer Garten, went east to Alexanderplatz and transferred to a U-5.  The U-5 was, like the U-2, one of the properly functioning lines in East Berlin that did not have any ghost stations.  On the U-5, the stations looked like when the wall was pulled down and Reunification happened, it was prior to their renovations in the 2000's.  The unrefinedness gave the stations their character.  I could have gone farther on to Hönow but I needed to get back to Berlin Zoo, so I exited the U-5 and returned by the S-7.
I made it back to Zoologischer Garten station to pick up my clothes bag.  I found the train car where my seat reservation was located, and from there, the train went southwest to Leipzig.  I was listening to the radio but somehow fell tired until we arrived in Leipzig.  From Leipzig to the state line of Bavaria, the train went semi-fast, say about 75 mph, on the electrified lines through Naumburg, Jena, Erfurt, Illmenau, Schweinfurt and eventually to Nuremberg and finally Munich.  I had a light dinner in the restaurant car, not much. The train arrived in Munich around 11:15 PM.
The World Cup Final with Brazil vs France did not start until 9 PM, so the train was still on the way to Munich when the match was ongoing.  Just short of Freising, the game ended and the conductor announced France won 3 to 0.  The Munich U-Bahn was still running when I arrived at Hbf.  When I took the U-4 to Arabellapark, the line 37 was also still running but with 30 minute headway.  I spotted a few Brazil fans waiting for the bus.  I think I arrived at home by 11:55 PM, I entered quietly and the next couple of days no one complained to me. Well what an interesting adventure in Berlin.  I have about four more for the summer.
 Gute Nacht, bis bald.
