Language Masters
I know Indigenous People spoke many, many languages, hundreds. We shared some commonality with sign language, etc and a few core languages. But, what recently caught my attention while studying Taino was that when Columbus and his hoard arrived, within 3 days, we were able to answer many questions they had and were able to speak with them. Similar to how Squanto learned english in months and Samoset in days of observing the pilgrims.
Backtrack to Tainos. Remember, Columbus was Italian and not very good at Spanish or Portuguese as his writings show despite living in Europe and being on ships with these sailors for months. Yet the natives learned, not only all three languages, but were able to realize that they were speaking different languages almost at once and when suddenly under duress.
The level of education/intelligence one would need nowadays to pull of that is incredible. Not just masters of linguistics, but, multilingual. And not just one or two Natives, but, almost all of them. You try learning a new language (or 3) from your immigrant neighbors in 3 days to the point of being conversational.
Yet, history still sees us as just ignorant, happy to please, indians.

Image by @urban.iskwew 🧡 Here in Canada, September 30th is a day to bring awareness to the genocidal residential/boarding schools that native children were forced to attend. September 30th was originally known as Orange Shirt Day, a day started by natives, but has since been renamed by the Canadian government to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I will start this by saying I am not native, so when I speak I do not speak for natives. The Day for Truth and Reconciliation is good in bringing awareness to people who never bothered to be aware before, but it is sad it took 6500+ children’s bodies found so far in Canadian residential school grounds to make people notice. As many people have noticed, the Canadian government taking a day that existed and retitling it and making it a holiday for government workers only is a strange twist, and is not enough of a step towards justice. Take in that some people responsible for the abuse that occurred in residential schools are still alive and could be held accountable. There is not enough funding for the help needed to get through the recent trauma of residential schools. There are reserves in Canada, a 1st world country, that still do not have running water. There are thousands of missing and murdered indigenous women that still need to be found and given justice. The list goes on.. Although this day is Canadian and I know most of my followers are not, colonization is a worldwide issue. As usual, I would like to remind you all that people who identify as witches tend to incorporate practices from many different cultures. Please do not touch closed practices. We have enough to work with, there is no need. Please acknowledge the way we all benefit from colonization, and how we all need to put in work to give a platform to native issues that still go on today. I am going to post lots in my stories today 🧡 #orangeshirtday#closedpractices#nativeissues#residentialschools#nationaldayfortruthandreconciliation#mmiw #everychildmatters (at North America) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUdNXA7rMAR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Yá’át’ééh Relatives, Sister Nations and Allies, Speak for the Peaks is an art initiative calling for submissions of art that address Snowbowl’s ongoing destruction of a sacred mountain known as the San Francisco Peaks. More importantly, this project seeks to unite and revitalize our collective expressions that hold this mountain and her many relatives as sacred as we collectively remember the mountain as:   Tsii Bina to Acoma: Dził Tso to Apache: Dook’o’oosłííd to Diné: Nuvaʼtukyaʼov to Hopi: Huassapatch to Havasupai: Wik’hanbaja to Hualapai: ʼAmat ʼIikwe Nyava to Mojave: Nuvaxatuh to Southern Paiute: Wi:mun Kwa to Yavapai: Sunha K’hbchu Yalanne to Zuni. As a sacred summit, this mountain nourishes the various life ways that are intricate, biotic and a repeating of seasonal ecological breathing that is as patterned and diverse as the more than 200 songs that reside within one ceremony (among various). The aim is to use expression to educate and move our Indigenous relatives, as well as foster relations through these conversation that center on our collective wellness as they are one and the same with this sacred site. Additionally, we are aiming to also support struggling Indigenous artists during this pandemic by offering a $900 prize for first place (with a $100 donation to a person/organization of the winners choosing) and several $50 runner up prizes for each phase of this art initiative. Obedience and discipline is big part of the society of old, to some devrew it remains within certain cultures and is essential in sports, today that has changed where what is created for teaching and to be passed on to the generations expected to come so they can continue and contribute to this fraternity knowing the efforts contribute to this incredible power and the glory we receive as we gather to either play and or observe the efforts of the athletes and the hard work of those given the charge and duty to preparing these athletes for their moments of which is up to both their efforts and ability to listen and imagine is being tainted and twisted to try and divide what was meant only to multiply and bring people together of all nations to celebrate and to continue our purpose to understanding this gift given us, and it's strength and power. All humans must eat and it is my belief with the celebration of 150 years of Canada, that we as Nation should celebrate all others with a feast at the table of peace , in hopes of building bridges over the river of division, to strengthen Canada as it would be complete and collective against any threats. There are traditions that must be shared with children and by example such would be a tradition and always anticipated in celebrating ourselves for doing that which is right and settle all our differences that those who have suffered and denied by our past can at least have the chance to catch up and be no longer judged as we all make the effort to try and learn and how else again but through food and wonder why there are no indigenous (native) restaurants given the confirmed history of agriculture, fishing, hunting and knowledge of the land and would permit for more indigenous entrepreneurial representation and hope for the young men and women to work away from the reserve and be free from any limitations/ restrictions and be able to live. Framing the Kobuk Road
Framing the Kobuk Road
Tumblr media
I wrote this a couple of years ago, but the topic came up recently and I thought it was appropriate to re-run it. Lela   While the Yukon River Access Road (currently just the 54-mile Road to Tanana with a distant dream of taking it all 500+ miles to Nome) is welcomed by the majority of the residents of the corridor, not every community wants roads for a variety of reasons. So, today at Burger King there was this little kid with a paper Indian bandana thingie w/paper feather thing on that I assume he made in school. He was literally running around me while I was standing on line screaming, "whoowoowhooowhoowhooowooo" and his mother, with her big ass white lady smile, looks at me and says, "he's so excited for Thanksgiving".... #NativeIssues #DoNotSlap #HidingInACaveTillNextMonth

“Sick In the Head: When Settler Mental Illness Affects Native Physical Health”
It’s strange sometimes, when you start getting into activism; when you start unlearning the lies of a country founded on genocide and thievery. It suddenly turns the concept of activism into something very real, something that must be done not for special privileges but out of necessity, sometimes even survival. As Winona LaDuke argues, “Someone needs to explain to me why wanting clean drinking water makes you an activist, and why proposing to destroy water with chemical warfare doesn’t make a corporation a terrorist.

The cuts that are part of the mandatory sequestration are bringing misery to the reservations, but Congress offers no response.
Definitely a good read and a super good response to those who call themselves "pro life." It's not just those 9 months that count you know
