Had the opportunity this evening to share in the wisdom and learn from the lived experiences of some very powerful speakers and knowledge keepers, while participating in a virtual beading circle. We have done, through colonialism and cultural genocide, so much harm; and there is so much fucking work to do.

September 30th, 2021 marks the first #NationalDayforTruthandReconciliation in Canada. This federal holiday gives us a chance to recognize and commemorate the intergenerational harm that residential schools caused to Indigenous families and communities, and to honour those who have been affected by this injustice.
#OrangeShirtDay is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Now, each year on September 30, people across Canada wear orange shirts to raise awareness of, and start a conversation around, the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada

The Crucial Role of Society in Child Sexual Abuse Prevention
Introduction: Child sexual abuse is a harrowing reality that affects countless children worldwide, leaving profound physical, emotional, and psychological scars. The prevention of child sexual abuse requires a collective effort from society, including individuals, families, communities, institutions, and policymakers. By acknowledging its existence and actively working together, society can play a pivotal role in safeguarding children from this heinous crime.
Raising Awareness: The first step in child sexual abuse prevention is to raise awareness and educate the public about the signs, consequences, and prevalence of this issue. By disseminating information through various channels like workshops, campaigns, and media, society can become more informed and vigilant, ensuring potential victims receive the support they need, and potential abusers are identified and reported.
Empowering Children: Empowering children with knowledge about personal boundaries, safe touch, and appropriate behavior empowers them to protect themselves. Schools, families, and communities must collaborate to implement age-appropriate sexual education programs and encourage open dialogue to help children understand their rights and speak up if they encounter any abuse.
Breaking the Silence: Society must create an environment where victims feel safe to disclose abuse without fear of shame or judgment. Reducing the stigma around child sexual abuse encourages survivors to come forward, which, in turn, aids in the identification and prosecution of perpetrators.
Strengthening Support Systems: Support networks are crucial for survivors of child sexual abuse. Society can help by providing accessible and comprehensive support services, including counseling, therapy, and helplines, to help survivors cope and heal from their trauma.
Encouraging Reporting and Accountability: Society plays a significant role in holding individuals and institutions accountable for their actions. Encouraging and supporting the reporting of suspected abuse ensures that cases are appropriately investigated and addressed by law enforcement and child protective services.
Advocating for Policy Changes: Advocacy for child protection policies at local, national, and international levels is essential. Society can push for improved legal frameworks, stricter penalties for offenders, and enhanced training for professionals working with children, such as teachers, healthcare providers, and social workers.
Implementing Preventive Measures: Proactive measures are vital in preventing child sexual abuse. This includes background checks for individuals working with children, better supervision, and protocols within organizations and institutions to minimize the risk of abuse.
Challenging Gender Stereotypes: Addressing gender stereotypes and fostering gender equality is vital in combating child sexual abuse. Societal norms that perpetuate power imbalances contribute to vulnerability and enable abusive behavior. By promoting gender equality and respectful relationships, we create a safer environment for children.
Conclusion: The prevention of child sexual abuse is a responsibility that society cannot afford to overlook. By promoting awareness, empowering children, breaking the silence, strengthening support systems, encouraging reporting and accountability, advocating for policy changes, implementing preventive measures, and challenging gender stereotypes, society can create a safer and nurturing environment for children to grow and thrive. Together, we can protect the innocence of childhood and work towards a brighter future for the next generation.
