Salvia mellifera, black sage, is a perennial shrub in the mint/sage family native from central California down through the top of Baja California. It is part of the cast of plants present in coastal sage and chaparral habitat, thriving only in a specific range of rainfall in a mediterranean climate. The flowers host a variety of pollinators including butterflies, hummingbirds, and native bees and its seeds, like other Salvia species, are abundant and provide food for animals and birds. The fragrant leaves contain chemicals used by the Chumash to treat pain and a unique spicy honey is derived from the plant in the modern day.

I swear I would absolutely destroy a neighborhood to replace all the yards with this.
It's just very important to me that you know prairie-style gardens exist.
Ok. Thank you. Carry on.

🌸Mid-week bloom alert!🌸 Our little warehouse in Brooklyn Melbourne is bursting with beautiful flowers today. We're thrilled to showcase a stunning mix of kale, snapdragon, and lisianthus - each one more vibrant and lovely than the last. There's nothing quite like the joy of seeing fresh flowers in bloom, especially in the middle of the week when we could all use a little pick-me-up. We love being able to share these moments with our community, and we hope that these blooms brighten your day as much as they have ours. Stop by and see us today to take home a gorgeous bouquet, or just to admire the beauty of these blooms in person. We can't wait to share the joy of mid-week blooms with you! . Did you know you can turn your garden into a Certified Wildlife Habitat?
Though the National Wildlife Federation, you can certify your yard, container garden, schoolyard, and more as a certified wildlife habitat.
Once you meet all the requirements, you can apply and have a chance to get a fancy plaque for your garden.
Your garden must have"
Food. Plants that produce food or food boxes.
Water. Access to some sort of water source like a bird bath or (if you wanna be fancy) a fountain.
Cover. Places to hide, sleep, and escape from harsh weather. Things like trees, fence bushes, a dog house, or a bird house.
Places to raise young. Bird houses, bat houses, bee habitats, tall trees, and anything else some little creature could raise a family in.
Sustainable Practices. Maintaining your garden in an environmentally friendly way to make sure that all recourses stay clean and useable. Using Soil and Water conservation practices (drip irrigation, reducing erosion, using multch etc), Integrated Pest Management to reduce and remove invasive species, and eliminating Chemical Pesticides all go towards sustainable garden practice.
Please read more on the National Wildlife Federation website if you are considering applying. I probably missed some things here but this is so fucking cool.
