VA Native Fish Hunting - 25

What a great day for some fishing! This is one of my favorite spots to spend a half hour knee-deep in swamp muck. Really, can't recommend it enough. Nothing new per se today but a couple of really neat finds.

Let's start on a high note. My very first search landed me this GORGEOUS Flier (Centrarchus macropterus). I hadn't caught any in close to 3 years, and even those were just tiny inch long fry. This beaut was much larger and extremely impressive. I would like to one day have some in my 125 gallon tank, but since that's not free today, back he went.

The next fish I caught was this Bluespotted Sunfish (Enneacanthus gloriosus). I love this fishing spot specifically because I can find these here, and in fact I caught maybe 5 BSSs today. Beautiful animals and highly recommend them for home keeping - definitely some of my favorite native fish!

This little guy is not as straightforward as the last two. It's a Lepomis spp but it could be a few different species. With the wavy body lines, I would guess Warmouth, but could also possibly be Pumkpinseed or Bluegill. Regardless, it was a neat find today as I don't see many Lepomis here often.

These Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia holkbrooki) are what I came for today actually. I used to have a dozen in my 55 gallon tank but they only live for about 2 years and I'm down to my last 4. So I caught 8 more, including 3 males. I personally like them but they get kind of a bad rap regarding aggression in my opinion.

We also get a fair amount of crayfish in this area! Again, I'm not that knowledgeable about them, but I'm pretty sure it's a Cambarus spp. - maybe C. bartonii. Those seem to be common in my neck of the woods anyways.

The most common submerged plant here were these bladderworts - also a very fun inclusion for home tanks. They are carnivorous plants but do perfectly well without being fed live animals. The only real caveat is that they don't seem to like extended stays under direct light.

The other common plant here was this Spatterdock (Nuphar advena) which has spread quite a bit since I was last here earlier in the year. Much too big for home or pond usage honestly, but neat plants all the same.

It's been around 3.5 months (cycle, seasoning, and monitoring after adding my juvenile betta in) and I think everything is going great so far!

I think he's maturing well too cos his adult pattern is appearing/darkening 😃

(*coughs* I had issues at first cos I used the filter cartridge from my other betta tank to get the cycle going... not realising that there's activated carbon in it 😐

I kept adding almond leaves and wondering where my tannins were dissappearing to until I cut the cartridge open and was like "ooh..")

Humans had changed. They had evolved. Over the years, they had found ways to go around the simple magic of sirens, to dull the destructive, lethal pull of their song to something pleasant and manageable. Something enjoyable that was worth paying money to hear.

Whumpee saw them exchange the money; because of course it wasn't going to their nonexistent pockets, it was going to their owner, the cruel fisherman who had pulled them out of the sea on that fateful night. They'd thought he was under the control of their spell, and by the time they realised how wrong they were, it was too late.

It had been years since that encounter. Years spent in a tank too small, with water that was too dirty. Years spent being paraded around and gawked at by humans, shown off, tortured whenever they'd tried to resist.

"You're mine," Whumper had said over and over again. "And you'll sing when I tell you to."

Whumpee had cursed him in their native language, the one the human didn't care to understand or learn. They'd tried pulling him into the tank to drown him, all to no avail. There were always other humans around, willing to help their friend over some disgusting beast.

So they sang. They sang for their owner, and they sang for the drunken idiots who had gathered around the tank, and they watched their faces change and relax, scowls morphing into serene smiles. How ironic it was, to bring about peace they'd never be able to share in.

"You're doing great, love," Whumper said as he walked by. "Very successful evening. I might even get you one of those fish treats if you keep it up."

Whumpee didn't respond, so Whumper just scoffed and disappeared into the crowd. One day. One day they'd get out. One day their magic would be powerful enough to override whatever pills and devices the humans had used to suppress it.

One day, they'd hold Whumper under the water until all the air and life left his body, and then they'd devour him whole.

Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, Diavolo rents out the entirety of the Devildom Aquarium. After a question about Devildom sea creatures earlier in the week, Diavolo made sure to finish up his work by Saturday so he could take you out on a cute little date!

Diavolo also made sure to learn a bunch of facts about the sea creatures native to the Devildom to further impress you, although he won't tell you about how much he studied during his breaks of paperwork. He was excited to show off his knowledge, taking your hand and enthusiastically pulling you through each exhibit.

"Ah, what about this one, Dia?" You say, stopping in front of a large tank that held red-and-black striped fish with two large golden horns on either side of its head. Diavolo hummed, deep in thought as he racked his brain for information on this specific fish.

"That one can poison other fishes with the horns on it head." He informed you, "but they're actually pretty friendly nonetheless." You let out a small 'oh' as you watch the fishes swim around. "Do you like these ones?" He asked, tilting his head in confusion. There were much cuter fishes, much less deadly ones too, but these ones seemed to capture your attention the most.

"I do," You say, glancing between Diavolo and the fish. You can't help but chuckle to yourself, thinking that they kind of look similar. "I think these ones are my favorite." Diavolo only furrows his brows in confusion at your laughter, but seeing you happy puts a smile on his face.

"Well, we have plenty of time to see the other fishes, lets stay here for a little while longer," He says, whilst squeezing your hand firmly. You nod, and continue to watch the fishes whilst he watches you.

(A few days later, you get a delivery— Diavolo sent you a tank along with those fishes you liked so much!?)

Barbatos specifically requested a day off to spend with you, the entire day so you two could go out on a cute little date— and after some research, Barbatos found that aquariums are suitable spots for such activities, so that's where he decided to take you.

"Oh, look!" You gasp nearly as soon as you two enter the building, "Penguins are this way!" You grin, grasping his hand in yours and pulling him along. He freely follows you around, because your amusement is his. "Aw, they're so cute!"

"Very cute indeed," Barbatos agrees, watching as the penguins do a little trick for a fish. You two continue on, going deeper into the aquarium when an announcement through the P.A. System informed everyone that a dolphin show would be beginning soon, and quickly the hallways emptied out. You went to follow the flow of people, but Barbatos gently grabbed your hip and pulled you towards him, until you two were the only people left in the area.

With the dim lights, a gentle glow from the bioluminescent creatures casting amongst you two, you couldn't help but find the atmosphere become incredibly serene. Taking a step closer to Barbatos, you can't help but give him a pointed look.

"Did you see this happening?" You tease, but when he looks off, seeming a little bashful, you can't help but chuckle. Ah, so he did take a little peak in to the future. Well, you can't blame him: The mood was very romantic now. "Well?" You hum, grabbing his attention away from the glowing jellyfishes, "Aren't you going to kiss me?"

Barbatos lets out a soft, breathy chuckle, before pulling you closer and kissing you. As if the fish could understand, they reacted in the most beautiful way— lighting up, dancing like stars in the sky, amongst the water.

It was fun showing off human realm fish to Simeon, taking him to the aquarium and reading off the plaques to him, or spouting off your own knowledge of certain sea creatures. Simeon was particularly fascinated with the sea horses.

Hand-in-hand, you knew you two would soon be coming towards the last exhibit, as well as the gift shop. Simeon noticed a small spark in your eyes, something mischievous that had his stomach churning in a good way. "What do you have planned?" He asked, brows furrowed.

"Hm? Oh, nothing, nothing." You stop near the gift shop, "Just... Wait here for a few minutes, okay? I'll be right back!" He nods, a bit shocked at your sudden withdrawal.

"Oh, okay- Uhm..." He watches as your figure disappears. He awkwardly stands against the wall, waiting for you, when you suddenly appear with a giant grin and your hands behind your back. He narrows his eyes, "What do you have?"

"Ta-da!" You say, holding up matching sea horse keychains. "One for you, and one for me!" You hand him one, whilst you clasp the keychain on to your bag. "Do you like it?"

Simeon stares at the sea horse keychain in his hands, a soft smile on his lips. His eyes are filled with admiration— you got him a gift? You really didn't have to! Simeon looks up at you, his smile growing. "I love it, thank you."

Simeon makes a silent promise to forever cherish the keychain you gifted him. The fond memories he'll have whenever he looks at it is just much too great for him to not absolutely adore it!

You can't help but laugh at Solomon, he has been taking your picture with just about every fish that was at the aquarium. Despite his hatred for big bodies of water, he doesn't seem to mind fish too much. "Ah, look at me!" He calls for you again, taking his phone out and snapping another picture.

You scoff, taking his phone from him. "Enough, let me take some pictures of you now." The following few fishes you take some pictures of Solomon. Damn, he looked adorable, now you understood his obsession...

Clearing your throat, you state you want to take a picture together with him and the fishes. You two find someone willing, and whilst you aren't looking, Solomon mutters a few words and flicks his wrist and-

Upon receiving the phone back, you look at it with a big smile before noticing something very odd— why were the fishes forming a heart around you two? You look over at Solomon, clearly amazed, when he smirks and takes the phone from you.

"I think this is the best one yet." He tells you as you sets it to his lockscreen. He then makes a show of turning off his phone and then turning it back on just to show you his new lockscreen.

You look back at the fish, they've all swam away now. Honestly, you're impressed Solomon got the fish to do such a task, and he's right, that photo is the best one.

"Hmm... Will you send that to me," You ask, and he pretends to think about it before holding his phone out of reach.

"No, I think I'll keep it all to myself." He teases, enjoying the way you frown in annoyance. However he knows better than to test your patience, he promises send you the photo later, along with the several hundred other he took.

c!Ranboo - Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)

Basically the loser of the fish community lmao. They are really sensitive to their surroundings. They need the water to be a certain pH and temperature in order to survive. They are migratory in order to fulfill those needs. They are also bullied by other fish (specifically brown trout) to the point where populations are dropping. They are one of the more timid and docile species of trout. They stick in small groups. They will become aggressive when feeding or defending their spawning nests. Brook trout also have some of the most unique and colorful patterns. Brook trout hybrids are common occurrences

c!Tommy - Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Largemouth are the fish that is in everybody’s business. They are very much in your face all of the time. Simultaneously both very smart and very dumb. They commit to one spot to make their nest and will defend it fiercely. They are picky where they put their nest and spend a lot of time maintaining it to keep it in good condition. They typically will live in the same body of water and not migrate out, but will change depths depending on the seasons and where food is located.

c!Tubbo - Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu)

Basically the Largemouth’s little brother. They are very similar but the smallmouth are typically smaller and bit more docile. They are also arguably a bit smarter than the largemouth as well. They are also very territorial and will defend their nests. Their nests are also well kept. When defending or hunting, they fight like a tank. Although smaller than the largemouth they pack a bigger punch. Smallmouth are also more cold tolerant than other fish.

c!Phil - Walleye (Sander vitreus)

Walleye remind me of crows. They have terrific eyesight, which is why they have big eyes. Their unique eyes allow them to hunt at night. They have one of the greater lifespans and can live to be a couple decades old. Walleye spend time in schools with members similar to them. They like to lurk in deeper cooler water. They are more active at night and more docile during the day. They become aggressive when seasons change and they have to stock up for the winter

c!Techno - Bullhead catfish (Ameiurus melas)

Bullhead are similar to walleye and live in similar conditions. They like cooler murky environments to reside in. They are docile if left alone. They will become predatory and territorial if provoked or feeding. They have venomous spines on their fins which hurt like a bitch if you get stung (not fatal). They scavenge more than hunt and scrounge around the bottom looking for food. They fight hard and hit hard. And once they have something they are very determined to not let it go

Brown trout are actually invasive and are not native to North America, they originate in parts of Europe and Asia. But they have now established themselves as part of the ecosystem. They compete with the native species and often pose a challenge. They are typically bigger than other trout species and their competitors get shoved around a bit. Browns are smart and cunning, and are very successful hunters. They are arguably the most territorial species of trout

Easily one of, if not the smartest gamefish. They are nicknamed “the fish of ten thousand casts” because they are very picky and know how to differentiate lures from real bait fish. They are hard to catch. Muskies are ambush predators and will eat anything that fits into their mouth. This includes waterfowl, rodents, and frogs. They are elusive and like to stick to themselves. Musky are very dedicated to their territory and will fight any intruders out

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 364,789

3. What fandoms do you write for? Only X-Files, although sometimes I have thoughts.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Chicken Dinner, Pause, The Kaleidoscope, The Boy on the Beach, The Marriage Spectacular

5. Do you respond to comments? Not every time. I do in bursts. I feel guilty if I respond to some and not others, so sometimes I just respond to none, especially if it's a long story and I'm posting chapters everyday. I wish it were otherwise, because I sincerely do like engaging with comments.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I've answered this question before, and I think I decided it was either (1) Opposition and Synthesis, which is a post-Requiem fic that no one has read, written between season 7 and 8, on Gossamer or (2) Ice Water, which was a fic I wrote for an exchange, also beginning of season 8, which is on AO3. Both of them have the same source of angst, which is the season 8 overall angst: missing Mulder.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of my fics have happy endings. I do try not to sew things up too tightly--I prefer to keep it a little open-ended, with the possibility that things could still be complicated, because I guess that feels more real to me. And more in universe, I suppose.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not very often. Sometimes. There was someone recently on a fic who went on a rant about me hating Mulder, but it mostly made me laugh. (Y'all. Let me assure you. This girl does not hate Mulder. She is a ridiculous Mulder champion.) I haven't been that upset by hate on my fics. I've been more upset by seeing hate on other people's.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have. It's always a struggle for me, possibly because I'm not a super visually oriented person. I have betas who help me with this a lot, and I'm grateful to them. I do tend to want smut to feel organic to the story; I don't like when it feels tacked on. (Although listen, I don't judge anyone who wants that either; fanfic is for fun lol.)

10. Do you write crossovers? No.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don't think so.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Someone asked me if they could translate one of my fics to Russian once. I assume that happened.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Not yet, but mulling that over with some co-authors now.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Mulder and Scully. Sometimes I admit I will also read some Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have many WIPs. Maybe 8-10. I don't post WIPs any more because that experience is too stressful for me; I prefer to wait until the whole thing is done and post then.

16. What are your writing strengths? I revise and rewrite a lot. Dialogue. I used to think I was bad at plotting, but I'm getting better.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I get certain phrases and words in my head and keep reusing them without thinking about it. Then my beta makes fun of me for saying "scowl" 150 times in one chapter. Also, I struggle with visualizing a space and how characters are moving in it. My betas are always like: "What side of the table is he sitting on?" "Where is her leg?" "Is she on the side of the couch with the fish tank or no?" I don't think of these things very well naturally.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? All of my fic is in English, my first and best (by far) language. I would never write in another language unless I had a native speaker willing to help me with this. I included a few lines of Spanish in one fic, but I double and triple checked that. (And it was almost nothing! )

19. First fandom you wrote for? X-Files, unless you count things I wrote as a kid about books.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? This is hard, but I do love Boy on the Beach, which I researched quite a bit and very carefully plotted out. I also like We're Not Here To Talk About Personal Problems, which was the first fic I wrote for an exchange, an X-Cops post-ep, and really felt like me getting back into new fic.

1. Is writing a hobby or way of life?

A hobby, but also kind of a way of life, as it's tangential to how I make money, and it's always something I've done regularly.

2. A journal full of writing notes or a clean, completed manuscript?

Is this what I prefer? Clean, completed manuscript then. I don't like paper journals at all, so while I do have notes, they're only in Google Docs.

3. Who (or what) is your writing inspiration?

I don't have a specific event, person, or work of art. I will say I think I am influenced by having had some training writing for the stage. I often write dialogue first and then fill in everything else around it. And I think about plays I've read or seen a lot when I write.

4.Which is worse: someone you "idolize" reading your first draft or listening to you sing?

First draft. I revise a lot. And I'm an amazing singer, or at least I am so far as you know.

5. Has writing from someone else's POV ever changed your own perspective?

I feel like I should say yes, but no, not that I can remember specifically.

7. AO3 wordcount, and are you satisfied with it?

364,789 - Am I satisfied? I don't know. Do I win something at a particular number? Assuming no, the number doesn't really matter to me. I would be sad if I never posted anything again though, because I enjoy it.

8. What movie/book/fic gripped you irrevocably? I really loved From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler when I was a kid.

9. What's the highest compliment you could ever be given, and have you been given it? I've received such generous feedback on my fic of every kind, and honestly I could never hope to say which kind was the best. I'm grateful for that. I will say that someone told me on Pause that my D.C. geography was spot on, and I was really thrilled about that, since I spent quite a bit of time "driving" from Georgetown to Alexandria on Google Maps / Street View to see what it would be like.

10. What defines your writing style?

Dialogue. Angst. I don't know. What else? It's hard for me to see!

Summary: Sirass figures out the cause of the sick reef.

Sirass glared down at his bonded, arms folded over his chest as he looks down at you “And why do you not want me to come with you while you are inspecting the sickened reef?”

You sigh and remind him “You can read through the data that we've recorded, collate it and find connections between different incidents much faster than any of the rest of our team. That and… The Reef and the fish and other sea life who depend on it are getting much sicker over the past several months. The number of parasites and sheer variety of them is unlike anything any of us have ever seen. I… I know that you have an incredible immune system and that your armor somehow helps you to survive the depths of space… But-” you reach out and lightly touch the grumpy Iron Warrior's hand with one of your own, squeezing gently “I worry about you. We don't know the source behind these sicknesses. I would feel awful if You came down with something while helping me with this issue.”

“What about you? I know that you've told me that aquatic diseases can't affect you, and that threatened aquatic parasites are unable to penetrate through your swimming gear, but I want to be there to protect you. Besides, despite my many excellent skills, data processing is best left to-” Sirass grumbled before he stopped talking mid-sentence, as a horrified expression appeared on his face.

He swum through the air as fast as he could, large form blurring for several moments as he picked up a damaged piece of diving equipment. His fingers shook a little as he inspected it, face pale and expression unreadable “Do you know how this happened?”

“Yes, Doctor Alenfil had to do an emergency evac to the surface a couple of hours ago after his equipment started malfunctioning out of nowhere. I saw him do the double check myself. He said he was mobbed by dark green creatures that burbled and cackled - two of them sparked electricity and they tried to bite him. Luckily he was able to scare them off by hitting them with his shark baton… Are you okay, Sirass?”

Sirass let out a series of probable-curse words in his native tongue. He darted over to the table and sketched out the rough shape of a strange looking little monster. It has many pointed teeth and three too many eyes for your taste, and small, thin tails “Did they look similar to this?” Heasked, tone urgent and eyes wide.

“I'll have to check with Parris, but from his description, yes.” You respond, alarmed by how distressed Sirass was. You take a snapshot of the picture and text your colleague, who was currently being treated for the bends, having had to go up to the surface to avoid drowning after his oxygen tank had been bitten through. Less than a minute later, you had your answer. It was a simple one word answer, which you passed onto Sirass. “Yes, that's what attacked him, why?”

“Fuck fuck fuck! This is far more dangerous than I first thought. You need to quarantine that reef and the surrounding lands for at least 8 miles in every direction. Fuck! Why didn't I see this sooner?” Sirass growls, swimming back and forth in the air in agitation. “... I'll need to contact the chapter masters. They're likely going to get the Salamanders involved.”

You blink in confusion, asking “we do have the Reef and the surrounding waters condoned off. Why eight miles specifically? What's going on? Who are the Salamanders? What is a chapter master? Sirass! Please talk to me.”

“Eight is a number sacred to the worshippers of decay and disease. I should have known weeks ago this was their doing. Chapter Masters lead the major pods. Like captain's, but on a much larger scale. Salamanders can and will set anything on fire. Which is what we'll need to do.. and where is that… Where is Pollux? He is a Son of Dorn, but will know the danger of the situation and help me in calling for the necessary people.”

“Hold on! No one is setting anything on fire! worshippers of what now?” You were delighted to get confirmation that the different pods of Astartes did in fact communicate with one another more than the occasional snarling hiss exchange with the bright yellow and black astartes who was partners with Doctor Smithson, another member of your conservation team. You still didn’T know who Dorn - nor Perturabo - was. Neither wanted to elaborate. “How would belief cause destruction?”

“... I will explain when I can, my heart. But this is too dangerous, too urgent to pause for explanations. That reef and all those afflicted animals will need to be killed and burnt. To avoid further contamination. As will all of the samples taken. The risk to everyone is too high, even if the samples are kept in lab conditions for study. This is no mere illness in the waters caused by simple waste, temperature or salinity changes. It's far worse. More sinister and deliberate.” Sirass warned before yellowing at the top of his lungs “POLLUX YOU UGLY YELLOW BASTARD! WE HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM!”

Seconds later Pollux entered the room, scowling. So did most of the conservation team, all looking puzzled. The Imperial fist asked impatiently “What is it now, Iron Warrior?”

“Doctor Alenfil was nearly killed by a Nurgling when it bit through his air tank.” Sirass stated.

Pollux swore explosively in a dozen languages, as he started reaching for his helmet. “This is catastrophic! We should coordinate on who is calling which chapter master.”

“You speak with the Carrion-Worshippers, and I'll handle the Chaos-aligned.” Sirass suggested.

“He is not- you know what? I'm not getting into an argument with you over his holiness, not when we have a budding Garden of Blight on our hands.” Pollux hissed.  Both astartes swam off together, voices tense and unhappy.

The rest of the conservation team descend on you, and you answer their questions to the best of your abilities.
