Sir you are under arrest for being criminally tiny.
But you're so cute no jury would convict - so you are free to go.

Caught one of the most elusive killifish in the world, Mangrove killifish. This is a FASCINATING amphibious species of fish. A few quick facts
-The majority of the population are hermaphrodites, they are the only vertebrate that self fertilizes in this way, this is not the same as parthenogenesis in reptiles etc
- They're amphibious and prefer terrestrial conditions, often opting to sit out of the water similar to mudskippers. Theyll actually spend much more time out of the water than a mudskipper, days at a time as long as conditions are right.
-They do not have overly modified pectoral fins like you'd expect, instead they have a unique stationary leap that they can use with extreme accuracy.
-Despite being widely distributed the entire genus is extremely difficult to find in their habitat. Theyre extremely prized amongst hobbyists and were definitely near the very top of my life list of species that I didn't think I'd ever be able to find.

Totally random and not pet related but I just learned that the genus Amia has been separated into two extant species! There was previously only one, Amia calva, the bowfin, but after genetic work last year it was separated into two species, with the new one being Amia ocellicauda, the eyespot bowfin.
I found this out by logging into iNaturalist and seeing that people were going nuts with the ID on my bowfin observation. These pictures are from 2019, this huge dude swam up to me and let me take a few pictures! You can see the pronounced eyespot in the second picture.
I just thought it was neat that I took pictures of a “new” species before it was even named haha. Really wish I had my GoPro back then so I could have gotten some cool underwater shots of this big guy!

Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum)
It’s cold and frozen outside so here’s a video from July I forgot to post! Saw a ton of these tiny little dudes darting around in the shallows. It was almost impossible to see them unless they moved first because they blended in so well. Super neat looking little fish!
