National Cabbage Day
Beyond the popularity of the Cabbage Patch Dolls from the 1980s and beyond, cabbage sometimes doesn’t get as much honor as it deserves. National Cabbage Day is here to change that story!
History of National Cabbage Day
Dating back at least 6000 years, cabbage is a vegetable that has origins in Asia and the Mediterranean, and acts as a staple for foods from many different cultures. Easy to grow and with many varieties, cabbage offers a hearty option for food storage over the winter time, especially in root cellars, which is probably why it can be well utilized in places that are cold and dark.
Cabbage comes in a few varieties, including green, purple, red and Napa cabbage. Though it looks a lot like lettuce, cabbage is not actually related to lettuce at all. Part of the cruciferae family, cabbage is a cousin to other vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower and the delightful brussel sprout, which can obviously be celebrated on its own day: Eat Brussel Sprouts Day!
National Cabbage Day was founded to pay special attention to this vegetable that is especially great when enjoyed during the winter time. Perhaps that’s why the day was chosen for this month!
How to Celebrate National Cabbage Day
Celebrate the taste and nutritional value of this vegetable on National Cabbage Day! Consider getting involved in the day with some of these ideas:
Eat Some Cabbage
Many people consider cabbage something their grandmothers made, but it’s time to bring back this classic! Affordable and nutritious, cabbage has gotten a bad rap but can really be made into some delicious and delightful dishes. Whether used fresh or cooked, cabbage offers a way to add some unique flavors and crunch to an otherwise boring menu.
Try out some of these ideas for cabbage recipes:
Napa Cabbage Wedge Salad. Forget the iceberg lettuce and opt for a wedge salad that contains bacon, green onions and a delicious sesame ranch dressing.
Kimchi. A traditional Korean dish, Kimchi can be made from various vegetables (including cabbage, of course!) that are salted and fermented.
Fried Shrimp with Cabbage Slaw. Cabbage makes an amazing complementary side dish to seafood, like fried shrimp or even fish tacos.
Learn Fun Facts About Cabbage
Get involved with celebrating National Cabbage Day by learning and sharing some bits of trivia about this important vegetable. Try out some of these facts to get started:
Cabbage is often associated with the Irish dish, corned beef and cabbage, which is often made and eaten in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in March.
Cabbage is nutritionally sound, offering health benefits such as fiber, iron, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, calcium, manganese and much more.
Cabbage is a low-calorie food that is great for anyone to eat. In fact, one cup of cabbage only has fifteen calories.
Famed baseball player Babe Ruth used to wear a cabbage leaf under his baseball cap during each game, apparently for luck, as baseball players are rather superstitious.

So When Can I Go Back?
What you’ve all been waiting for, Part III!
We woke up early on Friday to catch a flight back to Buenos Aires. Once we arrived, we were starving, so my friend and I went to an Italian restaurant called Los Inmortales! My friend from Argentina recommended the restaurant to me, and it lived up to the hype. Argentina has a lot of Italian influence, so it’s known for its delicious pizzas and pastas. I ordered a pizza that was loaded with mozzarella and olives, and I devoured it in seconds.
Later, we caught up with some other exchange students who happened to be in Buenos Aires too! We stopped by the Floralis Generica, la Universidad de Buenos Aires, and el Museo de Bellas Artes. All the national museums are free in B.A. I was shocked to see several Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, and Jackson Pollack paintings in the museum! They weren’t even enclosed by glass or anything; I was scared that I would accidentally brush into them. That night, the girls and I had a relaxing night in watching Mafalda, a famous animated movie in Argentina, like Charlie Brown in the U.S.
The next day, I woke up and went to this super hip café called Café Martinez, one of the top-rated cafes in B.A. There, I got a waffle loaded with pecans, banana, and Nutella. I always like to order something on the menu that I’ve never tried before, so I got an orange cold brew, or coffee with a few splashes of orange juice. It sounds gross, but it hit the spot. I then decided to get my miles in and walk through the Teatro Colon, La Catedral Metropolitana, and the Casa Rosada where the president lives. It’s like the White House but it’s the Pink House! I also walked by the Obelisco, where everyone flooded the streets after Argentina won the World Cup. After, I stopped by Puerto Madero, a scenic and tranquil part of B.A. where boats used to come into port. There is the Puente de la Mujer which is shaped like the spine of a woman’s back when dancing tango! Fun fact: tango was born in Uruguay and Argentina at the same time. In Puerto Madero I got a choripan, which is like a hot dog but with grilled chorizo. Can you tell that I’m eating my way through Argentina?
Later, I went to the Cementerio de la Recoleta where I saw the mausoleum of former Argentine president Domingo Sarmiento. It was amazing to see how big the mausoleums are for these prominent Argentine families! After, I got dulce de leche ice cream at Luccianos. It was so delicious but so rich that I felt a little sick afterward :/
After another relaxing night chatting with family and friends, I woke up the next day to get breakfast and go shopping at the Feria Artesenal Intendente de Recoleta. The market was filled with local artists and their creations, including jewelry, hand-made clothing, and custom mate cups! could have spent a fortune there, everything was so unique and specific to Argentina. I especially loved anything to do with Lionel Messi. It’s clear that he’s a national figure in the country. Then, I checked in at a hostel because I spent one more day in Argentina than the girls, and I walked through Avenida Corrientes and got three empanadas: jamon y queso, carne picante, and humitas. They were so tasty and even better with a cold Coke-Zero. I later met up with some other international student friends and we walked through the Jardin Japones! It was a gorgeous little sanctuary that had ponds with koi fish and plants native to Japan. There was also a spot where you could make origami and write a message, so the four of us made penguins and wrote where we were from. There was also a spot where you could write a wish and hang it up on a tree. I saw one message in scribbly handwriting that said “quiero ser futbolista”, or “I want to be a soccer player.” How precious! After, we walked an hour to the Barrio Chino, like China Town in New York. I loved looking at all the different types of sweets and drinks they sold. I didn’t realize how diverse B.A. is in terms of food and culture; it’s incredible!
My friend, Cleo, had studied abroad in Buenos Aires a few years ago, so she knew of a spot where people meet up to dance tango! We went there and we watched several couples dance around the plaza. They would often change partners and chat with each other as they were dancing. I loved how free and serene they looked; now I want to take tango classes! After, we went to a Mexican restaurant because one of my other friends, Karen, is Mexican! We had some delicious tacos, although I will say, they weren’t nearly as spicy as they should’ve been. After that, I headed back to the hostel and slept like a baby.
On Sunday, I took the ferry back to Uruguay and conclude my whirlwind of a trip. I’m so proud of how independent I was and that I got to visit some touristy spots as well as experience the authentic Argentine culture! Now, I understand why everyone in Uruguay spends their weekends in B.A. I came back to Uruguay a few pounds heavier to be sure but also with a reminder of why I love traveling so much. Argentina, tens mi corazón!

Pass The Cheese
The academic in me loves to watch how companies pin their hopes and aspirations on specific products as well as specific demographics. Hope springs eternal not only in the human breast, but also that of companies.
And it is equally intriguing for me to note the passage of time, how companies shift their targets—and hopes—to different population cohorts. As a Boomer, I have enjoyed being in the spotlight of marketers’ attention for decades, if only because of the sheer size of my generation. It’s hard to turn a blind eye toward 78 million people.
Well, except when they get old, cranky, and set in their ways. If you live long enough, someone will be able to say that about you as well.
Today I find myself looking at Qdoba, the Mexican food chain that is on the verge of a major national expansion—including coming to Amarillo in February 2025—and the attention they are paying to GenZers. In fact, they are are basing one menu item—Queso Apocalypto—on youthful preference for very spicy foods. Concurrent with the item is Qdoba’s intentions to own, maybe not so much in a legal sense but rather symbolically, National Queso Day.
It’s a bold move, one befitting of bold flavors the company knows that younger consumers crave. At a time when folks in my generation are eating increasingly bland diets, and gnoshing on dinner long before the sun goes down, this may just be a good move.
American cuisine, if there is such a thing given our highly varied multi-ethnic population, is pretty tame. About the only spice in our diet comes from international foods, but even then, menus have often been “Americanized,” which is code for toned down. The “medium” heat level I request at Thai and Indian restaurants is laughably lame among Thai and Indian immigrants, whose normal is so hot it might just burn the roof off my mouth, or the lining of my stomach.
Still, I am all for the increased spiciness of our food offerings, even if I am still learning. I’m not ready to hang up my utensils and eat meat loaf and mashed potatoes. But it’s when Qdoba says it is going to own National Queso Day, I say “Not so fast, burrito boys!” You see, the last time a company made a similar assertion, it did not end well. We need look back only a year to when Taco Bell used its sheer size to bully a smaller regional competitor into giving up a trademark it had owned since 1989.
Taco John’s had launched Taco Tuesday long before most of my students were even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes, but did not do a very good job of protecting it. Before long, it seemed that every Tex-Mex joint in the country was observing Taco Tuesday with their own deals. It had become, according to Taco Bell, generic. Furthermore, Taco Bell argued that the phrase should thus belong to the public, not one company who had done a lousy job guarding it.
Taco Bell prevailed, and rather than having to endure an expensive, protracted legal battle, Taco John’s acquiesced and gave it up. Taco Bell has now gone on to move National Taco Day from October 4th to the first Tuesday of October—that’s next week, yo—and it is something every taco purveyor can use to their advantage.
Now you see where I am going with this. If Taco Bell, an industry giant under the Yum Brands umbrella, can dictate what others do, imagine them also taking umbrage with an upstart’s declaration about queso. Chipotle, who is arguably Qdoba’s biggest competitor in the fast-casual Mexican sub-genre, may also not take to kindly to this.
Technically, National Queso Day was observed a few days ago on the 20th of September. And, believe it or not, there is a governing body of sorts when it comes to tentpole events such as days, weeks, and months dedicated to products, causes, and the like. The National Day Calendar folks are the people you want to talk to about this if you have something clever in mind.
The best that Qdoba can do, truly, without causing a fight, is try to dominate the day. Chipotle may act like the elephant in the living room when it comes to National Avocado Day, National Burrito Day, and National Quesadilla Day, but they don’t own them. They just play their cards like a boss.
But that doesn’t mean there can’t or won’t be challengers. Qdoba could take up the fight for avocados, and Chipotle—or Taco Bell or anyone else—could similarly lay claim to queso. Thus, Qdoba must work hard just to retain its dominance of queso, if it even has any at the moment. There’s nothing to keep anyone from using the phrase, and even if the company had trademarked it, then it would be faced with the daunting proposition of trying to enforce it.
Good luck there. Rather than focusing on manufactured observances, they should probably just stick to their knitting, which in this case means doubling down on spicy hot queso aimed at the emerging generation of adults. That points to a future that last 365 days a year, not just one.
