📍 The National Museum in Warsaw, Poland
I took myself out on a museum date the other day. It was splendid. ♡
I will need to go back multiple times to see all the exhibitions, but I was eager to start with collections of objects of everyday use.
I take great interest in everyday objects from times past - I simply love imagining the daily lives the people who were here before us.
How on a hopefully sunny afternoon, there was a person who carried one of these pocket sundials (so we were punctual slaves to the dominion of time even before the popularization of pocket watches after all!) on them when out and about to make sure they're not late for an important meeting.
How a certain family gathered around a table every day and talked or argued while they dined on these fine plates.
How one night, a Transylvanian noblewoman decided which one of her beautiful brooches to wear to a ball this time (this one was a nice bonus for me, I've just finished reading Dracula. I wonder if one of his un-dead brides wore such a brooch?)
I especially enjoyed the way the exhibition was divided into three sections based on wealth and social class. In one room I could let my imagination take me to a wealthy merchant's townhouse, the other - an aristocrat's estate out in the country.
You may think me silly for being enchanted trivial little things such as brooches and teaspoons, but take a closer look yourself. You may be surprised how magical you might find them ✨

Do 1 września 1939 najcenniejsze dzieła Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie zostały ukryte.
———————————————————————
Prior to September 1, 1939, the National Museum in Warsaw kept its most valuable works hidden, with the museum staff keeping detailed inventories. As the eastern front approached in 1943, some of the works that had been previously deposited at Wawel were transported deeper into the Reich. When the Warsaw Uprising broke out in 1944, German SS troops took over the museum building, resulting in the greatest losses suffered by the museum.
It is estimated that the National Museum in Warsaw lost around 12,000 objects during the war, which equates to 10% of its pre-war collection.
Although the collection has seen the return of over 500 works in recent years, a significant number of objects still await recovery.

An anonymous Amduat papyrus, dating to the 21st Dynasty. At the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
[An Egyptian papyrus, brown, with a black and red illustration of the solar barque. The prow is a snake looking back at the sun in the barque. The sun sits on a red base, and contains an eye of Horus. Two Maat feathers stand in front of it. The barque sits on the hieroglyph for "sky", beneath which Apophis is drawn with a thick black coiling line.]
