La rose de fer (The Iron Rose, 1973)
"You who know the land underground, can you hear me? You, my friends, answer me. They've locked you in with their railings and their crucifixes. You're not death. They are."
#la rose de fer#the iron rose#jean rollin#skull tw#horror film#french cinema#1974#films i done watched#françoise pascal#hugues quester#nathalie perrey#mireille dargent#michel dalessalle#pierre raph#art film#my first taste of a jean rollin film#is a beautiful if perplexing piece. plot very much takes a back seat#this is a mood piece. all about atmosphere and feel.#it looks pretty great which is some achievement as by all accounts it was made for peanuts. but then rollin doesn't really need anything#more than what he has: a fantastic location and two strong leads. shot almost entirely on location in a cemetery (amiens?) the director pay#careful attention to his visuals. everything is shot in slow long still takes which emphasise the stillness and the isolation. colours are#all very autumnal and muted. dirty greys and browns. except notably rollin dresses both his leads in bright primary colours#pascal is the stronger of the two leads and delivers what must be a career best performance. with just a look or a movement of her eyes she#communicates a whole world of thought and emotion. her gradual transformation from scared young woman to something all together#more lost and unstable yet also more confident and comfortable in madness is really quite impressive. it's a tricky frustrating film#don't get me wrong its sort of brilliant and in it's own way a work of art. but it's tempting to grasp for meaning where their might not#actually be any. this seems to be divisive among horror fans and i can see why. it's a hard line to tread and at times the film is at risk#of straying into self importance and satisfaction with it's own avant garde nature. elsewhere it risks pushing the self conscious horror#vibe too far (the clown in the cemetery is very almost too much). but mostly rollin reels it back and delivers a true approximation#of a nightmare in film

Don Cherry - Music, Wisdom, Love - first release of 1967 sessions (Finders Keepers)
Reaching a near-mythical status amongst fans of free jazz’s most worldly intrepid explorer, these seldom heard Paris soundtrack sessions known as Music, Wisdom, Love have evaded collectors’ grasps and confused historians for exactly 50 years. Instigated in Paris in 1967 and filmed during Don’s downtime on a visit to the Chat qui Pêche nightclub in March 1967 (where he played with Karl Berger, Henri Texier and Jacques Thollot), the bulk of this cinematic portrait was filmed on the streets of Paris under the direction of creative all-rounders Jean-Noël Delamarre and Nathalie Perrey, who, as their careers bloomed, would become pivotal figures in underground French cinema – straddling La Nouvelle Vague, adult entertainment and cinema fantastique in what can only be described as speedball cinema. As the supportive creative family that primarily played home to French vampire/horrortica director Jean Rollin, both Nathalie and Jean-Noël, his brother Jean-Philippe Delamarre and a small team of other fans of oblique media would be responsible for a vibrant micro-culture that awkwardly flourished on the outskirts on the Parisian new wave – combining comic book culture, Lettrism, sexual liberation, psychedelic rock, graphic design and (with this record as prime example) free jazz and avant-garde music. What previously might have been regarded as an unlikely coupling, with the benefit of half a century of archival hindsight, this release documents the essential cosmic collision of two fantastic planets.

Les deux orphelines vampires (Two Orphan Vampires, 1997)
"We are sublime disorder. We're from before their god. They made him say 'Let there be light' to cut our night in half. But their order is chaos. Our disorder is mad poetry. Our existence awakens, and our night is clarity. The two orphan girls roar alone in the night, like flames."

I mean a Rollin film from the 90s? But wow what a pleasant surprise#A strangely sweet and elegiac waltz through an alternate Paris dreamworld: one of vampires and she wolves and ghouls#Feels less like a horror film tho and more like a sort of... Dark fairy tale. The two vampires at the heart of the story are unusual too in#Being so damn charming. Pic and Teboul channel this perfect mix of childlike innocence with a darker more dangerous animalistic edge#Rollin reins in his propensity for strong sex and violence and concentrates instead on philosophical musings about the nature#Of identity; the meeting of religion with magical realism; immortality in theory and in practice. A thoughtful meditative and weirdly#Very moving film which rises above its genre origins. Outside of the Iron Rose (and I'm not sure anything will ever quite replicate that#Experience) this has been easily my favourite Rollin film so far. Really kind of wonderful. Oh and the Tina Aumont cameo? Absolutely#Brilliant. According to imdb trivia she accidentally learnt the wrong part and had to improvise her scenes (as well as being deeply upset#Bc she worried she'd ruined the film). I hope someone told her how good she did. A few moments of screen time but the most hauntingly weird#And strangely affecting part of the film.
