I still can't get over how amazing the ending of Control Z season 2 was...
Like Javi, the hero threating everyone with gun in order to save Natalia; All of them fighting over the money; Pablo watching the money falling from the sky, then watching a body hitting the ground...the shock, the fear of his face and THEN...AND THEN WE HAVE THE MOST PURE CHARACTER TELLING PABLO WITHOUT A WORD TO TAKE THE MONEY AND FORGET ABOUT THE DEATH BODY
Please I'm shaking... that was a masterpiece they couldn't never top

I think the reason Javier/Natalia works for me is because their relationship is what the writers think they’re doing with Raúl/Sofía.
(tw for brief mentions of hazing/bullying and self-harm).
Raúl/Sofía is supposed to be the “I’d do anything for you” couple, but all of the “grand gestures” Raúl does for Sofía don’t actually make her life better and aren’t things she even asks for. The point is supposed to be that Raúl is willing to ruin lives for Sofía, but the end goal was never to help her or improve her life, it was to get her to be with him. Being the hacker in season 1 and trying to make her his emotional crutch in season 2, and meddling in her dad’s prison sentence/investigating Susana’s body removal in season 3 have nothing to do with Sofía herself and what would be best for her; they’re all just efforts to make her like him, either by manipulating her feelings or proving that he’s Not As Bad As People Say He Is :( Raúl can’t really be doing these things solely for Sofía because the ultimate objective is his own personal gain.
In contrast, Javier offers Natalia financial help-making it clear that he expects nothing in return-and when he threatens the group on the rooftop with the gun, he has everything to lose. The only reason he does that is because he’s worried about Natalia. He doesn’t stand to gain anything from the situation: Natalia isn’t even there (so she wouldn’t know what he did); his friends will be afraid of him if not hate him; and given his Dark Past™, if he intentionally instigates a violent act (or threat of one), he’ll lose the sense of morality he’s been trying to develop after The Soccer Incident, and have blood on his hands in an even more serious way. Obviously, don’t threaten your peers with guns, but if you wanted an actual example of Bad Behavior In The Name Of Love, then that scene is...right there...
Raúl/Sofía is also supposed to be the “I’ll forgive you for ANYTHING because I LOVE you” romance trope. But, imo, that trope only works if it goes both ways. Raúl never has anything to forgive Sofía for. She didn’t hurt him in any way at all. In fact, up until Susana’s death, she was probably the most innocent person in the show. Javier and Natalia both have checkered pasts. They both made selfish, ill-advised choices that hurt other people-Javier through participating in hazing culture to Be Cool (which led to someone dying) and Natalia through school fund embezzlement (which led to dealing drugs via working for The Local Mob and all of the consequent complications). And Javier forgiving Natalia for agreeing to sleep with his dad seems a little weird, but I think the important thing here is that it actually had nothing to do with Javier at all. She didn’t do it to hurt Javier (or help him somehow, which Idk how that would work logically, but also we have Raúl/Sofía, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ), and she would have behaved the same if it had been any other man offering her a way out. She felt backed into a corner because she was desperate, scared, in danger, and running out of time. And Javier also understands what it’s like to be scared and backed into a corner come season 3. What Natalia did disturbs him, but he gets why she did it. (And in return, Natalia gets why he asked his dad for help and hid his removal of Susana’s body.) Forgiveness in this context seems a lot more plausible to me than Sofía forgiving Raúl for the extreme privacy violation of her peers, her dad’s imprisonment, her friend’s murder, and Raúl and Friends’ ableist comments. Raúl hurt her and the people she cares about directly. But Natalia and Javier, though they may have irreparably hurt people, didn’t irreparably hurt each other.
And the major “appeal” of Raúl/Sofía is supposed to be that He Becomes Better Because Love and that Sofía...Idk becomes more confident or spontaneous or something? Something something opposites attract/we aren’t so different trope. But Raúl...does not ever actually change. He never apologizes for ANYTHING, he’s still trying to manipulate things behind the scenes of Sofía’s life, he’s still blackmailing his peers, HE NEVER ACTUALLY GETS BETTER. In terms of Sofía gaining...anything? From this relationship? I guess she becomes more impulsive, but that’s hardly a good thing-on it’s own or in the context of the show. Her rushing at Raúl for sex in season 1 led to losing her virginity under dishonest circumstances. Self-harm (which she is shown to struggle with) is an impulse. Her biggest impulsive decision was confronting AYS directly, which led to The Game™, and fucked things up on a level that even this show hadn’t reached before. She doesn’t become more open-minded or forgiving, because the only person she forgives for terrible behavior is Raúl. She shuns Alex, she breaks up with Javier, she even walks away from her dad. Instead of confidence or loosening up, she just becomes a completely different version of herself, with no clear arc to show how she got there. Every time their onscreen together just goes to show how little they have in common and how little their relationship is actually based on. (I don’t have the energy to talk about Raúl/Sofía anymore, so if you need a more fleshed-out explanation of this, just read this and/or this post.)
Javier had a) already started on a self-improvement journey before the start of the show, b) as mentioned above, chose to help Natalia with no expectations because he was genuinely moved by her desperation, and c) when he fucked up with Sofía by lying to her about moving Susana’s body, he immediately went out of his way not to make the same mistake with Natalia. He tells her that he can’t be with her while harboring such a serious secret, and then when she offers communication with no strings attached, he opens up and is completely and totally honest with her. He even outright admits that he’s a shitty person. Similarly, Natalia is surprised and inspired by Javier’s kindness toward her, which-along with rebuilding her relationship with her sister-softens her edges and brings out her more compassionate side. She also becomes closer with the other members of the group through her relationship with him and comes to care about them, too. She even tries to help Rosita when she thinks the latter’s unique traits are being washed out by her romantic relationship. Javier and Natalia make each other better.
All in all, Raúl/Sofía was supposed to be an Opposites Attract/Love Conquers All ship, but they dynamic that actually accomplished those things was Javier/Natalia.

Loving your posts about Control Z! I've just finished s3 and I'm a little disappointed. I felt they rushed everything. I get that Sofia and Javi needed to get each other off their system, but they took so much screentime. And acted even more bland. Like they both know they just don't work together but gonna insist anyway. I felt like the writers wanted to please everybody but really didn't satisfy anyone lol And don't even a kiss for Sofia and Raul? They teased them kissing and they got nothing at the end. Felt very obvious to me that the writers didn't want to give really romantic/sexy scenes between them. They want to let open to interpretation. I don't know, Sofia and Raul are much more popular than Javi and Sofi, so why waste the last season with her and Javi? Maybe the writers had more things planned but Netflix axed the show? Or they didn't want people reacting badly that Sofia choose Raul? Anyway, I've seen few people talking about this season and not having much Raul and Sofia didn't help. And the fact that Netflix forgot to promote the show...ugh.
Sorry for the long message. I got carried away 😁
Don't worry. I love to talk about my shows too!!! ...I mean my whole blog is about me ranting alone about them lol.
First of all, THANK YOU for complimenting my post. I love that you loved them.
I definitely agree with you on Sofia and Javi. Their scenes were very annoying and boring. Many people didn't like this finale season and I think their relationship had a lot to do with it. Literally, it felt like it came out of nowhere and was there in our throats since ep 1. I definitely wasn't expecting it but I guess they did it because since season 1 they were hinting at it but they thought they would have time to go for it but then Netflix was like "Ey this would be your finale season" and they tried to capsule everything they have planned for their ending in 1 season when it could have taken them two.
However, I did enjoy this season because for me was really nice to see how they took all the characters and the storyline to season 1 because season 4 was just season 1 but bigger; with characters more mature and with a different mindset.
For me, it was beautiful to see, especially Gerry's. I hated him in season 1, and for them to be able to show us how he went from a lost guy with repressed homophobia to a guy who doesn't care if they killed him but he would remain true to himself. Not gonna lie, the scene where they beat him up while he screamed at them "I´m gay" made me cry. It was beyond amazing.
Another moment that touched me was when Nata was trying to feel what Maria felt when she drown. It was painful. If you have lost someone, it would hurt even more.
I don't think people realize how hard it is to write all those things. I love to write, so I know that what they did wasn't an easy challenge. To tell the SAME story twice without making it feel like a repetition AND respect the characters and their arcs... not all writers can do it, not even trying it. So I respect them for it. I really enjoy the effort they did.
Of course, it wasn't perfect but like I said I think they were planning to have at least four seasons and everything we saw was for the last season, with the 3 being a preparation for it but Netflix didn't give them a chance.
But in general terms I'm satisfied. What played against them were the relationships that they presented this season. because I've seen people complaining not only about Sofi and Javi but also about Gerry and the new guy (I don't remember his name, sorry), but as well as I understand why the writers did Sofi and Javi, I understand their relationship. In both cases, they were never meant to last.
In Sofia and Javi's case they show us how, even though, they were kind of happy, they were more using each other as comfort and security after the accident they witnessed. Like in season 2, both of them learned that loving Raúl and Nata was dangerous and a bad idea. Raúl lied to Sofi and Nata "cheated" on Javi. And all that mess ended up with Nata almost dying and an innocent person dying. Both Sofi and Javi experimented and did things that were so out of character for them and the consequences were fatal. THEIR LOVE FOR NATA AND RAÚL WAS FATAL. so, why not to try act "normal" and be back to who they were before. Javi never disappointed Sofia before and vice versa. After a trauma like that, ofc you will want to feel safe. However, even when they wanted to play safe, we have little moments where Sofia was smelling Raúl's shirt when she was about to have sex with Javi, or her being concerned about everything he did. We also have Javi immediately saying "You shouldn't have to go for all that alone" (I don't know if he said that in English because I saw it in Spanish and it was so sweet because he said it like she was a baby who left alone )...so all those little details showed that Sofia and Javi were thinking all the time on Raúl and Nata but they were scared of let themselves to be carried away. They were never meant to last
A similar thing happened to Gerry and the new guy. They were cute, yes but the writers showed us many times that Gerry saw Luis in this new guy and if we go back to season 1, what the writers wanted was to explore and recreated Gerry and Luis's relationship. That's why the new guy betrayed Gerry at the end because Gerry too betrayed Luis. Gerry failed Luis and that's why he forgave the new guy because Gerry understands how it feels to not want it to do something but feel forced to do it anyway because all you want is to survive. It was a sad thing but so was Luis's destiny in season 1.
but the difference lies in the fact that Luis and Gerry's situation led to confusion, pain, anger, and death. This new situation between Gerry and the new guy led to forgiveness, acceptance, and the ability to move on. not only for Gerry but for Luis's mom too. That's top-tier writing right there.
I'm sorry for the long post haha. But I'm just like you. When I got carried away, I got carried away. I guess we also did a full circle too lol. Please come to talk to me whenever you want. kisses.
