After months of patient work and many despaired un-stitching and re-stitching frenzies, I finally finished my embroidery of the Doors of Durin. They’re more cousins, second cousins once removed even, than truly a copy of the original but I’m so damn proud and happy with the result!
[ID: an embroidery of the Doors of Durin in light grey thread on a dark blue fabric hanging in an embroidery hoop on the wall. /end ID]

@khazadweek day two | second age ● diplomacy | narvi comes to the west
Narvi was the daughter of a Stonefoot mercenary and an Ironfist blacksmith, and through the wide travels of her life she had seen many wonders of the South and East. But here in the West, in Khazad-dûm, was a kingdom unlike anything she had before known: caverns lit by glowing fungus, forges whose fires never died, coins and gems from all over the world, a King who danced with children in the street and dined with Elves and Men at his high table.
But more than Khazad-dûm, Narvi’s heart was taken immediately by the land of Eregion: for though its capital was Ost-in-Edhil, City of the Elves, Men and Dwarves roamed freely through its ever-open gates, trading, singing, laughing, learning. She was a smith, and even the grand-masters of Khazad-dûm spoke with reverence of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, led by Lord Celebrimbor of the Holly and the Star.
In Khazad-dûm she would dwell, for a time, but in Eregion she would flourish. Narvi would not rest until her name was known far and wide, no less renowned than Celebrimbor himself.

I love Rings of Power's Celebrimbor, but if I could change one thing (other than his canonical tragic end) it would be this:
More Narvi.
More time with Narvi.
More Celebrimbor and Narvi together.
Celebrimbor ooh'ing and aah'ing over just about everything in Khazad-dum while Narvi gives him parts 1-15 of the grand tour.
Celebrimbor and Narvi bonding over their love of crafting.
Celebrimbor and Narvi and their silly inside jokes.
Celebrimbor and Narvi talking around and around the possibility that they're soulmates (platonic or otherwise).
Celebrimbor and Narvi at dinner with Durin and Disa, just having a great time.
Celebrimbor and Narvi making the doors together and laughing like idiots about the riddle.
Celebrimbor touched and close to tears when Narvi presents him with some elf-sized furniture during his latest visit.
I could go on but ...
Just more Celebrimbor and Narvi.

I dont think we give our boi annatar enough credit this season mans was playing 4d chess up there. He was keeping an eye on things in khazad dum, he was aware of adars moves, he was gaslight gatekeep manipulating his way through the forge, he was sending his ex-wife mind dms just to check on her (<3), he was weaving a web of deceit over eregion because apparently these people cant take a hint. Really! So he left the mouse on loop and forgot the candles and lil diamond on the hammer, can you blame the guy? So what if he found some comfort in fake!gal and the smith. If not for all that physical touching! It would send a lesser man (myself) over the edge let alone the evil prometheus goo entity. He just wanted his rings and to be done with this part but noooo. Free will and all that. Pesky.
I just watched s2e7 and noticed right after narvi rushes to durin as he's leaving for the siege, the scene shifts to annatar with his eyes closed in the forge. Just how many plans is he pulling simultaneously. Does he not get headaches? Damn girl.:(
Let him (dead dove) fight with his (ex)wife, I think he deserves a lil treat. 😔
(Charlies menacing/insane smile at gal will sustain me until s3 ngl ngl)
sauron won't ever escape his fate of being a natural born glorified secretary 😔 doing too much unappreciated work while fluttering his pretty lashes at people he absolutely loathes (everyone except for his little elf galadriel).
i'm telling ya'll, the tragedy of sauron is that he was meant to be a sub malewife, found a perfect girlboss to tame him, but nooo she had to be obsessed with slaying him when all he wanted was to merge souls for all eternity (what did he even do that horrible? he could be her finrod if she was so insane about her brother). so now he had to be content with getting off on her blood-thirst for him 😔 forced to be a dom evil incarnate hunting her in those woods to grope her mind and titties 😔

Elrond and Celebrimbor visit Moria
This snippet is from a story where Elrond and Celebrimbor solve crimes in Khazad-dum. They haven't got to the detective bit yet, they are touristing it up visiting the Mines.
Clearly, Celebrimbor was honoured among the miners, for there was much enthusiastic nodding of heads and wagging of beards at his appearance, and shortly afterwards, he was presented with a pick, and took a cautious swing at the rock-face.  There was a hole about three feet tall, with a small stream running into it, and Elrond wondered if there was a special word in the language of Dwarves for such an opening.
Narvi appeared at Elrond’s elbow. “They are almost ready.  I hoped we would get here in time.”
“In time?”
“They are opening up a new shaft, very shortly.” Narvi folded a leathery calloused hand around one of Elrond’s hands and led him back towards the corridor they had entered by. “Let’s wait over here, we should be able to see everything, and be well out of the way.”
From a door in the wall that was nearly invisible until it was opened, Narvi produced a number of worn and durable-looking helmets, leather-lined and iron-bound. “Pop this on, there’s a good lad, Elrond.  Just in case of stray pebbles, you understand. This will be a little on the large side for you, I think, but better safe than sorry.”
Elrond balanced the helmet on his head, just as Celebrimbor came over to them, donning a helmet of his own.  “This,” he said. “This should be worth seeing.”
And yet for some time, there was nothing much to see. Dwarves moved around purposefully, shinning up ladders,  gathering the lanterns that lit the cave together near the wall where Elrond was watching.
Then he noticed that, one by one, the lamps were being put out. The shadows grew, and the light dwindled.
Narvi said in a half-whisper to both Celebrimbor and Elrond.  “First, we let the darkness under the mountain return. Remembering what the Maker set below Zirakzigil, before light and sound.”
The last lamp died, and the darkness leaped up to fill the cavern, blacker than any night under cloud or star.  Elrond could hear the sound of the Dwarves breathing, quietly in the great darkness, and as his senses reached out to make up for the lack of light, he began to hear other noises too: the faint trickle of water, and then, beyond that, the deep distant sound of the heart of rock. Zirakzigil itself, the Great South-Mountain of Khazad-dûm,  singing a song almost beyond hearing.
He could feel the great weight of it above him, and yet, it was not oppressive, as he had feared it might as the light vanished. It was more like a vast warmth, a kindly unspeaking presence so vast that small cares were lost in it.
“And now the coming of the light,” Narvi said. It sounded like a ritual, words smoothed by time and habit.
High above, from some hidden door that had previously been invisible, a bright beam of light poured into the cavern.  It was brilliant against the darkness, and yet it illuminated nothing but the small area where the Dwarves had been working.
Brighter, brighter it shone, until Elrond could feel the heat beating off the stone that it lit up. There was a faint rumbling in the air, growing louder, and three dwarves leaped to a stone shute, and flung the stone door open.
A great gout of water shot out, foaming white, and hit the wall just at the bright spot. The brilliance of the white water was almost blinding after the darkness. There was a great crack, and a huge section of the cavern wall buckled and fell into shards, opening up a wide dark space, through which the water roared, foaming and steaming in the brilliant beam of light.
Celebrimbor picked up a lamp, and lit it, smiling, as the beam of light from above faded. Around him, Dwarves were carrying lanterns and moving them back to illuminate the new space. “The People of Durin work on the large scale,” he said, and smiled. “They certainly do!  What was that light and heat? Have you tamed a dragon, Narvi?”
Narvi laughed. “Now, I have never thought of a dragon as something that would come in handy in a mine before!  But no, it’s more manageable than a dragon, thanks be! The Eye of ZirakZigil, we call it, and it took a good deal of building.”

Friday Favorites (21 June 2024)
A lovely range of deliciousness this week:
sisyphus, unhappy (M: 12K, WIP) by @tobermoriansass. Post-Return Curufinrod, and the first 4 tags are Accidental Marriage, Existentialism, Heresy, and Infidelity. Plus snooty Maglor and musical theory. What's not to love??
to sleep, perchance to dream (G: 2K) by @a-tehta. Glorfindel during the Fall of Gondolin. Ouch. Not the usual lighthearted G of this series, and still excellent.
revenant (T: 6K) by @welcomingdisaster. Maedhros and Nerdanel, after he returns. Destroys me every time I read it. Parenting, argh!! Being parented, argh!!
Such lamps as once shone in Khazad-dum (G: 100 words) by @hhimring. A delightful wee Celebrimbor and Narvi drabble that somehow fills about a million prompts and incorporates references from multiple Ages. Read the notes!
Klexos: Views of the Death of Míriel (G: 2K) by Chestnut_pod. Guide to an exhibit of representations of the death (and life) of Miriel. Marvelously complex and layered, with many moods and meanings. Come for the pathos, stay for the tacky tourist brochures!
Enjoy!
Previous recommendations of all shapes and sizes are at my friday favorites tag.

Closing Lines
Tagged by @grundyscribbling
Not so sure right now about what my last ten works are exactly, to be honest, but let's just go by "last posted to AO3".
1. Finally, / let us go home to the Valley. (Come back to the Valley)
2. Erellont looks sideways at Aerandir’s rapt face and realizes she will be returning alone. (The Wave Warbled Under)
3. Oblivious, Telchar is not thinking of them, only of making Narsil the best of blades. (Tink-Tink)
4. Oderen cannot smooth any other roughness—the painfully jagged feelings of the survivors of the Second Kinslaying—but he can do that. (A Partial Smoothing)
5. An anniversary like theirs—twenty years since their first meeting—deserved to be celebrated with a gift and Celebrimbor had just the right nook in Narvi’s favourite cave in mind. (Such lamps as once shone in Khazad-dum)
6. It had been such a hot day, even in the Forostar, that the evening breeze revived rather than soothed. (Numenorean Lullaby)
7. ‘A coronet—no, thank you, I just want to learn how to make them!’ (Early Encounter)
8. He sang the memory of that old pain to rest. (A Special Find)
9. Their sights are set on the conquest of Valinor. (Do you cut down down blossoming trees in the spring for firewood?)
10. ‘Dwarf friend, can you ride?’ (Wingfeet: Racing across Ard-galen)
[I skipped Utumno here, because you can't really use a poem about fragmenting speech for this challenge.]
I suppose you can see that I used quite a lot of present tense recently and that I don't shy away from dashes, but I am not sure you can see anything that my closing lines have in common specifically?
I'm not sure who has done this already. If you feel like doing it, feel free to take it up and say I tagged you!

trick or treat!
trick or treat :D
here's some more thought abt the lotro-pacrim au!
the first proper jaegers might have been a khazad-dum - eregion joint project. lots of nameless kicking around in foundations and deeper!
i really have not decided at all how much of a fusion this au is but. it would be really funny if instead of magic rings it's magic giant robots. or magic rings And magic giant robots. anyway. celebrimbor + narvi in a jaeger bc it's fun
i don't think loremaster companions in mini-jaegers (or just as a mini-jaeger itself. idk it's magic) is the ideal setup but it would be funny
golodir should get to punch mordirith with a giant robot. as a treat

Hello! I watched the fellowship last night and was reminded of something that always confused me, maybe you can help?
Why doesn't Gimli know about the dwarves of Moria before they get there? Gandalf obviously knew smth but didn't say anything (classic Gandalf) but Gimli was sure they were alive and would welcome them when they arrived only to discover they'd all been dead for decades or longer...what gives?
Bonus question if you feel like it: What's up with having an elven lock/password on a dwarven mine entrance? Don't dwarves and elves harbour a strong dislike/hatred for each other?
I haven't read the books in a long time so idk if the answers are in there but I know you're pretty knowledgeable about LotR lore so I figured I'd ask you 😁
Thx for your time
Hello! fkhjdkdf you have too much faith in me lmao i had to check with my friend but!
The dwarves hadn't had any news from the Moria expedition for a while, so they probably had a feeling that things had gone badly but didn't know for sure? I think in the film, they made Gimli more optimistic than he is in the book? and again Gandalf wouldn't have known for sure, but probably feared the worst
and no!!! like yeah they're not best buds, but there's loads of instances of elves and dwarves working together! and the doors were made by Narvi the dwarf, and the signs were drawn by Celebrimbor of Hollin/Eregion, which was an elvish realm near Moria/Khazad-dum! so the whole 'speak friend and enter' thing has more meaning when you think about how they were made through an elf-dwarf friendship! there would've been relations and trade between Moria and Eregion I imagine?

My thoughts on s2ep5 “Halls of Stone”
wait, the Dwarven rings are already made? (they look pretty sick, love the “dwarwish” sharp edges on their design)
uff, the sound design sounding like whispers coming from them!
king Durin taking things into his hands! sun-light is there again!
“Pity those who dwell above. Slaves to the sun. Chained to its ceaseless rhythm of waking and sleep. In Khazad-dum, we are free of its tyranny. Here, we bring the sun to us!”… yeah, i think this kind of sentiments might soon bring you to eternal nightfall
the door of Narvi and Celabrimbor!!!!!!!!
“Mirandia” better don´t be so close to handsome Blondie
love Celabrimbor so much <3
seriously, love they don´t present Celabrimbor as utterly stupid, he does push back on Annatar, he does have enough integrety to not follow his every word blindly, only… its Sauron he has to deal with, so…
Earendil, Tuor and Beren are mentioned! OMG!!!!!!
love the explaination that 9 is the trifold perfection of 3
Eressea is mentioned! but also Pharazon is king now, already talks with envy of the Undying Lands, and is an absolute a**h*** towards his son
Elendil´s vision is somehow chilling, and oh, i unerstand why Miriel believes the need to stay low, a sword is not always the best weapon, but… oh, poor Miriel
dang do i hate Kemen now. i know he is doing all this only to find approval from his father, but urgh.
also, Earien better be practicing her swimming, she´ll need it (i wouldn´t take her upon my ship)
the “Thank you Captain. The Valar bless you.” 😢
Celebrimbor realising his “fake” letter to Gil-Galad might backfire
love how they adress Disa kinda “switching sides” often, but its made clear that she is very much going by intuition- sometimes one way seems right, sometimes the other
wait… is that the lake where Gandalf fought the Balrog?! omg! (also, rip Gerda´s birthday present)
work on new rings continues, “Mirdania” expiriences the Unseen World!- got chills when she mentions a being of flame with deep eyes (Sauron got chills too, probably thinking “Dang, she saw me.”)
Durin is still suspiccious of Annatar (as he should)
the scene between Annatar and “Mirdania” made me feel so uncomfortable, like 1.) he is all charming and friendly, already twisting what she expirienced in the direction he wants (painting Celebrimbor as the one who is “ill” and needs healing), and 2.) when he touches her hair its 10/10 on the creep-scala
is this actually actual confirmation that “Mirandia” is just an alias of Celebrien…? Not only does mirandia simply translate as “smith”, but the way he compares her likeness to Galadriel, the fact that she absolutley looks like Celeborn & Galadriel´s daughter, and the way she blushess at this compliment/comparisment… (it also makes this whole interaction even more creepy on his part)
its awful when any religion is prosecuted (thinking of the Comunist-era), but man, as a Catholic i had flashbacks to early Christians being hunted by the Romans…
Nienna mention? omg, yes!
Kemen, i hate you so much! Destroying Nienna´s statue, and then killing Valandil? NOT MY MAN VALANDIL!!! how dare you Kemen!
Sauron continues to torture Celebrimbor with his mind-games (did i already mention that i want to strangle him?)
poor Celebrimbor! 😭
Annatar has charmed “Mirandia” completly
not that one orc trying to cut Galadiel´s hair! its literary one of the most precious things in this world!
Adar coming to “the recque”- i guess the Barbossa-Elisabeth-style scene will be next episode?

Such lamps as once shone in Khazad-dum
Celebrimbor put the finishing touches on the simple filigree and lit the small lantern for the first time to test the effect.
Amethyst and rose, light filtered through delicate runes etched into its five panes.
Lights a-plenty Khazad-dum had already, certainly, magnificent dwarf-made ones, in shining lamps of crystal hewn!
More were not needed, especially no contributions from elves, some grumpy elder might mutter, but Narvi would disagree, Celebrimbor hoped.
An anniversary like theirs—twenty years since their first meeting—deserved to be celebrated with a gift and Celebrimbor had just the right nook in Narvi’s favourite cave in mind.
Here on AO3 in the Ekphrasis Week collection for Day 1.

Another short LOTR comic I made, adapted from the chapter “Journey in the Dark” in Fellowship of the Ring.
I really felt Frodo’s homesickness in this passage, and the beginnings of his deep regret for how things are unfolding as well as what will never be again. Also love getting a glimpse of the friendship/allyship of Elves and Dwarves of old because of mithril, and of course had to sneak in Celebrimbor and Narvi. My favorite part of Rings of Power has been Khazad-dûm and the dwarves thriving (for ONCE!!)
