Okay how did I only just now realise that the person playing Jean-Paul Marat in the 1927 Napoléon is the Antonin Artaud? Like Theatre of Cruelty Antonin Artaud?
(honestly seems kind of fitting)

Mixed feelings are coming back with a strike! 🙃 I would rather wish we knew the exact date and if it's going to be shown at cinemas, not only AppleTV

Hi that's me giving my takes on other people's posts who knows how much time later than when they were posted 👋😅
About Kubrick.
In various articles, the recurring concept about Ridley Scott's incoming Napoleon is something about "Napoleon's rise to power through the prism of his tumultuous relationship with Josephine" or something similar, and it just reminded me of Kubrick's missed movie. That means basically Napoleon seeking success in war because Josephine and love let him down. It's still coherent with the whole Kubrick's vision, which I find fascinating anyway. I also don't mind the idea of Napoleon used by storytellers as a pretext for reflecting on wider topics.
Pity that it all seems also coherent with those historians with psychological diagnoses and takes about him you are so annoyed with. I am too, it seems like it's mostly meant for judging more than understanding a human and I find it disrespectful. At least, Kubrick's work would have been a movie, not a documentary meant for information.
All this said, however, I don't recall any talk of direct or official inspiration taken from Kubrick by Scott for his own movie.
As a Joséphine's fan, I wouldn't like her being portrayed with such a male gaze again as she would have been in Kubrick's project. But one doesn't have to be her fan to be annoyed by clichés and myths repeating themselves, such as her being promiscuous and having alleged affairs lacking of evidence.
I still don't really know if answering to old post is "polite" on his social, so if I intruded I'm sorry 😅
Hello, I once asked you about Napoleon movie of 2002 and you told me about this movie's good and bad qualities. Would you be so kind to speculate more on this subject, please?
I really don’t have too much to say about it. I’ve only watched it once, and that was about four years ago. I didn’t mind Clavier as Napoleon (actually I don’t dislike him in the role nearly as much as a lot of other people seem to), but in general I disliked the casting. Especially for Murat and Caroline. Caroline looked at least as old as Josephine despite the fact she was only a year older than Josephine’s daughter. And the casting for Murat... 🤢🤮 Maybe the terrible casting of the pair was deliberate since they were portrayed as basically evil and totally unsympathetic, but it was a huge disappointment for me as this was very early into my interest in Murat and I was excited about seeing him portrayed in a series. Anyway, I didn’t *hate* the series and I’ve been meaning to re-watch it, so don’t let my personal gripes with the casting dissuade you.

Rewatching Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story for the one thousand two hundred and thirty-fourth time 😊 and I've got a new aspect to appreciate in it.
In this miniseries, Napoleon is not lonely. He has genuine friends such as Bourienne and hangs out with the troops.
The only other movie where I've seen him being explicitly affectionate towards his own family is the Abel Gance silent movie.
Have you ever noticed how Napoleon is always depicted as isolated in movies, even amongst his comrades? He's always lonely, unattainable, unapproachable, the reason being either that actually he's socially incapable (I'm looking at you Scott) or that he's The Superior Man who can't just take a break.
I also get where this comes from, he's the one who in real life said "a lonely man walks faster" and stuff, manipulating his own image obsessively to look like a Roman immortal emperor. But do modern directors really have to stick to that?
Frankly it's not that realistic that a man raised in the army and with such charisma would never mix with people, not even the most arrogant one.
