so I clipped the additional scene with Tsar Alexander from the director’s cut of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon
Bizarrely it’s in Russian (and a really bad one at that) so I translated what I understood under the cut if someone is curious. I don’t know who the man in the red coat is supposed to be (my best guess is Lord Witworth, the English ambassador to Russia). All in all the scene does little to add depth to the conflict between Russia and France because seemingly the only reason Alexander is even torn about going to war is that he might lose again
Man in red: “What’s good for your friend Napoleon is bad for Russia. And what’s bad for Russia can’t be good for your Majesty. Trade with Britain (?) is essential for the greatness of Russia. Your father made a grave mistake by putting himself above the interests of his country. I wouldn’t want to see your Majesty become… unpopular with the Russian people.”
Alexander: “I am not my father. You’re making a mistake that you will regret if you think that I am like him. Russia will ally itself with the English once more. I am not afraid of Napoleon”

I think the big problem with Ridley Scott isn't that he is trying to erase the golden aureola, built over the years over Napoleon, and portray him in a negative light. That's an absolutely valid approach to the topic! The problem seems to be that he executes this idea in the worst way possible. Like, it's so clear that Scott doesn't understand Napoleon - not only his good points (and oh God does Scott seem almost willfuly ignorant about the qualities that made Napoleon Bonaparte so successful in the first place), but his flaws as well. He absolutely could've portrayed Napoleon as a traitor to the revolutionary ideals, ruthless politician always in pursuit of more power, and a man driven by growing hubris, which ultimately caused his downfall. Sure, there are caveats to all of these points, which makes Napoleon such a complex and divisive figure, but ultimately there is an uncharitable interpretation of him as a personality that Scott could've drawn upon.
Instead, he went for the cheap shots, making fun of his sexual inadequacy, lack of sophistication and being both literally and metaphorically cucked by Josephine (who is naturally portrayed as the archetypical "whore", because subtlety is for noobs). Which are all either untrue, or irrelevant to why Napoleon Bad, Actually.
TL;DR - Ridley Scott is not only a Napoleon hater, which is totally fine in my book, but actually BAD at being a Napoleon hater.

Napoleon
So despite this film not meeting my expectations, I still enjoyed it and obsessed with the costumes and visuals of it, I think that was its strongest aspect, along with the flawless acting from Joaquin and Vanessa, they did amazing with the script they were given 🙏🏻

NAPOLEON (2023) dir. Ridley Scott ↳ We are being terrorized by deputies armed with daggers! And these madmen have outlawed themselves by their attempt on the liberty of this country! They're trying to kill me! They're trying to kill him.

When I watched Napoleon in theatres, I unironically thought they casted James Cordon as Robespierre. I whispered to my mom, “Is that James fucking Cordon? Did they cast James fucking Cordon in this movie?” Along with a comment like “he’s in everything.“ and I vaguely remember making a trolls joke.

I had to double check before I posted the actor was, in fact, not James Corden /srs

This sticker design describes basically me after watching the Ridley Scott Napoleon movie. That thing was really bad... Well, there is nothing we can do.
