National Red Rose Day
Stop and smell the roses—literally. Send someone a bouquet of red roses, try your hand at growing them yourself, or put some in a vase to brighten your home.
A well-known symbol of love in addition to being a beautiful and fragrant flower, it’s no wonder that National Red Rose Day is such a popular occasion. Celebrating the many facets of the rose, National Red Rose Day is a time for gardeners, florists, and romantics to come together and enjoy the rose in all its splendor. National Red Rose Day gives fans a chance to see roses at their best, blooming in glorious abundance at the height of the season.
When it comes to roses, the choices are plenty, but with all of this choice comes great responsibility. If you are thinking of treating a lady or gentleman that happens to have botanical interests, you need to be mindful of the roses you choose.
First and foremost, let us address the small elephant in the digital room. If you are from across the water, roses can also mean a small cheap box of chocolates, 20% of which nobody will ever eat, unless you are hoping for a divorce, you should probably steer well clear of these.
Of course, when it comes to shopping for actual roses, you still need to be mindful. Roses are one of the international symbols of passion and love, but there are some roses, such as the Rosa violet Carson, which is often associated with death and getting closer to heaven.
Now, while you may approach the situation with the best intent, should you pass one of these beautiful rose hybrids to somebody with a little botanical knowledge, this situation is tantamount to visiting your parents with retirement home catalogs.
All joking aside, when it comes to the one flower that can place you into the embrace of another, or in some cases save you from a lengthy divorce, the rose really is that flower. The question most people seem to have at this point is about how a flower can have so much power, so let’s find out.
Why is the rose so powerful
It seems that from all of the universal constants that have been discovered over many centuries, the one that seems to have lasted longest and been most prominent is that men are useless when it comes to conveying their emotions.
Roses seemed to become somewhat a communication device for men to say something wonderful without ever having to say a word. In essence, it seems that the rose is, in fact, the earliest form of Snapchat.
On a more serious note, though, roses really are an international symbol of love. It matters not where in the world you may be if you present a loved one with a rose, you are certain to be passing over a message of love.
Having something like Red Rose day in the modern world is magical; the world is full of trials and tribulations, and it’s nice to think that an emotion as deep and complicated as love can be expressed with the giving of a single flower.
The history of National Red Rose Day
When it comes to when Red Rose day began, well, that information is a little skewed, and in truth, we don’t even know who started the whole thing off; the one thing we do know though, is why it began.
Believe it or not, Red Rose day used to be a part of the celebrations of Valentine’s week, but for some unknown reason became separated at some point over the last ten years. The history behind the red rose, and why we give it though, well, that is far more rich and full.
The earliest records we can see in regards to the cultivation of roses dates back almost 5000 years, and like most things, it starts in the far east. Rose cultivation started in China but soon found its way to Rome and Greece.
It is thought that roses were seen as a luxury muse and distributed among the rich who would then give them to artists to inspire them. It seems that, like most botanical pickings of this time, roses also found their way in the medicine of the time, and this was all before a single person had used one as an apology.
If we fast forward a little, we soon see that roses went from symbols of hope, peace, and love to become a symbol of war. In England, during the 15th century, there was a well-known war that saw two parties, both using the symbol of a rose to represent their army.
While now the rose is something that represents love, still to this day, we know this great 15th century battle as the war of the roses.
So, as you can see, even something as perfect as a rose can come with some bad blood in its history, the joy is that it’s most notable trait has carried through time, and it seems that it will continue to do so for many more years to come.
It seems that while the world is becoming infatuated with automation, technology, and doing everything online, days that celebrate romance will always hold a special place in the hearts of all.
Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or National Red Rose Day, you should try to make things as special and wonderful as you can for the person that you love. Nowadays, it can be hard to convey a message of love, especially with all the convenience of modern life that surrounds us.
How to celebrate National Red Rose Day
There are numerous ways to celebrate National Red Rose Day, so why not take some time to enjoy this special occasion? Some people visit a rose garden where exotic species are showcased wonderfully.
Others prefer to spend some time in their own garden, perhaps preparing a special meal to relish al fresco whilst enjoying the fragrance of their own red rose blossoms. National Red Rose Day is a great reason for a celebration.
On the other hand, you may even like to think outside the box and treat this as another day to show somebody just how much you care.
Whether it’s a special somebody or a family member, showing somebody that you care about them is never a bad thing. To help make the day special you could arrive home with a single red rose before giving your loved one a wonderful evening, or you could simply leave a rose before you head off to work, whatever you do, the gesture will go a long way.
When it comes to celebrations of passion and love, we can never have too many. So, if you haven’t celebrated National Red Rose Day before now, then perhaps this year should be the one where you start. After all, National Red Rose Day is becoming more and more popular with each passing year; you wouldn’t want to be the one in the dog house for not doing something special, would you?

Rules are Rules
The US Army transport ship USS Mount Vernon (ID-4508) was originally the huge German passenger liner S.S. Kronprinzesin Cecilie, built in Stettin, Germany, in 1906. As a US Army ship she had an eventful history including a humorous event at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
When World War I broke out in 1914 the S.S. Kronprinzesin Cecilie and 113 Austrian and German merchant vessels sought shelter in US Ports from the English and French fleets who would have hunted them down and sunk them. Those ships sat unused until the US entered the war in 1917 at which time they were all seized in a coordinated action. Aware of the pending seizure, all the ships were sabotaged by their crews on orders from the German High Command to prevent their use against Germany. It did not work, even though the S.S. Kronprinzesin Cecilie’s huge cast cylinders for her steam engines were smashed, US naval personnel pioneered a process to weld repair the castings returning her and others like her to service much quicker than the German’s anticipated. Together with other US flag ships, they carried two million American servicemen to France leading to the defeat of the Germans by Allied Forces.
The Mount Vernon made the first of nine trips across the Atlantic, hauling troops to and from the battlefields in October of 1917. Then one year later Mount Vernon was headed for the US with a load of wounded soldiers. 200 miles off the French port of Brest gun crews sighted a submarine periscope. It was too late to take evasive action as a torpedo slammed into her side and water began rushing in. The captain reversed course and personnel manned lifeboats to abandon ship if necessary as he steamed back towards Brest with damage control parties fighting the flooding. She made it to safety and was quickly repaired and put back in service. Then in 1919 with war over she was sent out to the Pacific.
On 17 October 1919 Mount Vernon was transferred to operation by the Army Transport Service where the ship was assigned to the Army's Pacific fleet based at Fort Mason in San Francisco. She steamed through the Panama Canal and into San Francisco Bay on Monday, November 10, 1919. At 706 ft long and 32,000 tons displacement she was the largest ship ever to transit the canal or sail into San Francisco Bay. Her mission was to sail to Vladivostok, Russia to return US troops and repatriate German prisoners of war and Czechoslovak troops who had been fighting the Russian Bolsheviks. But before she headed to Russia, she went to Mare Island for repairs. The process for ships heading to the shipyard was for the Mare Island Pilot to board the ship out in the Carquinez Straits and guide it to the pier through the narrow channel in the Mare Island Straits. No doubt the pilot was looking forward to the opportunity to guide this massive ship up the waterway. People would talk about it for years, and they did, but probably not for the reasons he supposed.
When the massive ship arrived off the Mare Island Straits her Army Captain did not pause as expected and, instead, he proceeded up the Strait to a position opposite the shipyard. Alarmed by the sudden appearance of the huge ship, Mare Island officials radioed her advising the captain that he was not authorized to proceed up the channel without the Mare Island pilot on board. In response, the Army Captain swung the giant ship around and sailed back down the channel to await the pilot out in the Carquinez Straits. Once the Mare Island pilot was on the bridge of the Mount Vernon, she then proceeded yet again up the straits to the shipyard. Fortunately for the pilot, the trip was as uneventful as the first or he never would have heard the end of it (he probably never did anyway).

Nestled deep in the heart of California's wine country lies an aromatic secret – a delicious blend of hearty comfort and sophisticated flavor. The Bacon and Smoked Gouda Lasagna Soup is more than just another entry in a list of lasagna soup recipes; it's a culinary experience deeply rooted in the traditions of Napa and Sonoma. As the days grow cooler, there’s something inherently comforting about tucking into a bowl of warm, rich soup. The Spot where Sausage is Supreme and Charcuterie is above all the rest. Among the best places to eat at the historic plaza in the town of Sonoma is The Sausage Emporium. Few people know the real details about sausage and “cold cuts” as owner Miranda Ives does.
She also knows how to pair beverages with the right combination of sausage and meat. This reporter had the opportunity to chat briefly with Ives while enjoying a favorite of mine from the regular menu.
The Vietnamese Banh Mi, made with The Sausage Emporium’s own pork sausage, paté, house pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, fresh mint, jalapeño and sriracha creme is yummy. What surprised me was the fresh baked bread-roll (actually it’s a short baguette) it was served in. The aroma alone made for an exceptional culinary experience as that baguette was soft yet slightly crisp and warm. The reviews and ratings for the Sausage Emporium are high and raves.
The harmony of hot, spicy and subtle tangy flavors was very satisfying. The other aspect to The Sausage Emporium I noticed is that there’s a variety of sausages and meats that can gratify just about any palate.
Being in Wine Country, Ives knows her stuff and can prepare a dish that will do more than impress; it takes the taste buds to new levels of experience. Being able to pair a particular wine with a food is a talent and I think it’s crucial.
For example, there are many wonderful wineries and wine-makers in the Sonoma Valley that are eager to have their wine served at a restaurant. Yet in efforts to sell wine and promote it, few tasting rooms take the time to really pair food with what they want to sell.
A really fine Cabernet Savignon like the one I had at the Zina Lounge at the Ledson Hotel, a glass of something sparkling at SIGH, or a Petite Syrah such as the one offered at St. Francis upvalley in Kenwood needs to have something exceptional to go along with it.
Ordinary grocery store cold-cuts truly don’t do a fine wine justice. I’m sorry to say that some of the tasting rooms at the plaza and elsewhere don’t understand this fact. A Sonoma or Napa Valley wine that can truly rival that of any in Europe must have a good food pairing to highlight its own flavor and regional characteristics.
Certainly Sonoma and Napa area can make fine cheeses but quality meat, specifically a sausage or local bologna? Hmm! Here’s where Ives and her staff can help. Charcuterie board servings are popular and The Sausage Emporium makes them.
Not many people know this but to make real bologna or mortadella, prosciutto, etc. is a “slow-food” art. Oscar Meyer or Hormel and others does only the mass produced type; of which Americans are used to.
Pepperoni for instance is essentially an American version of salami, something close to what Italians might call ‘salame piccante.’
As Ives knows, it’s a generic term that means “spicy salami.” It’s made from beef and cured pork mixed together and then seasoned with a blend that usually includes paprika, garlic, black pepper, crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper, mustard seed, and fennel seed.
Ives of course has her own recipe. Still, just about every pepperoni producer uses a different mix and ratio of ingredients, but paprika is always present. The paprika is the ingredient that give pepperoni its color. And most likely according to food historians, perhaps paprika had something to do with the name “pepperoni.”
Only someone like Ives would know that and provide a customer a more discerning understanding of what really good pepperoni is.
For foodies it’s also important to know that The Emporium’s ability to pair food with beverages doesn’t stop at wine and beer. Sausage Emporium serves delicious coffee and is even promoting its own holiday blend just for the winter season called “BeanWrks.”
The Sausage Emporium is Women-owned and operated, with an unpretentious, casual dining area in a memorable and friendly atmosphere, serving breakfast and lunch, along with as mentioned charcuteries, retail sausages, salumi, local wine, champagne, craft beer, and cider.
Open Wednesday through Sunday The Sausage Emporium begins serving breakfast at 8:30 AM and closes after lunch at 3:00 PM. Weekends- Saturday & Sunday doors open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. See The Sausage Emporium for website details.

Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi, the acclaimed Catholic friar, philosopher, mystic, and teacher, is celebrated by the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi every October 4. He founded the men’s Order of Friars Minor and the women’s Order of Saint Clare, among many others. This saint led a colorful and interesting life before devoting his life to God and becoming one of the most renowned Christians of all time. To celebrate him and commemorate his journey to the afterlife, the town of Assisi lights oil lamps for two days. Religious services are held and some children even bring their pets to be blessed on this day.
History of Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
It’s unknown if Francis was born in 1181 or 1182, but historians agree that he was born in Italy to a wealthy cloth merchant — right into the lap of luxury. Though he was baptized Giovanni, when his father returned from France with a penchant for all things French, he began to be called ‘Francesco,’ meaning, ‘Frenchman.’ As a teenager and young adult, Francis lived a carefree, wealthy lifestyle full of feasts and friends, yet he knew there was something missing.
After joining on a military expedition, spending a year as a captive, and dealing with a life-changing illness, Francis began to experience visions directing him towards God and away from the frivolity of mortal life and fun. He joined the poor who were begging at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and, in Italy, God spoke to him, asking him to repair his ruined church in Assisi. He illicitly stole some of his father’s cloth, sold it, and offered to pay for the repairs to the church with the money. The priest refused stolen money, and Francis’ father was livid.
To avoid his father, Francis lived in a cave in San Damiano, eventually renouncing his family and becoming a beggar. He gradually began to care for the poor and sick in Assisi. Soon, his preaching gathered him a following, and he founded the Friar’s Minor. The noblewoman Clare of Assisi heard him speak and was inspired by his message and, with Francis’s help, formed the order of the Poor Ladies, or the Poor Clares.
Francis would go on to travel throughout the globe, in places like Egypt and other locations in the Middle East to preach the gospel. When he returned to Italy, he reorganized the Franciscan orders, which had grown too large for the system in which they had developed. Franciscan missionaries were sent across the globe to spread the word of the gospel.
Near the end of his life, he was praying and fasting on a mountain when an angel appeared and gave him stigmata, or the wounds of Christ on the cross. He was treated in a hospital and was also suffering from trachoma. His last days were spent dictating his spiritual testament and he died on October 3, 1226. Two years later, he was pronounced a saint. The next day, the foundation for the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi was laid, and he was buried in a hidden tomb in the Lower Basilica on May 25, 1230.
Feast of St. Francis of Assisi timeline
1181/1182 Francis of Assisi is Born
Francis is born to a wealthy cloth merchant in Italy.
1223 Francis Arranges the First Nativity Scene
St. Francis of Assisi is credited with setting up the first live nativity scene in honor of Christmas — much like the nativity scenes you see today!
October 3, 1226 Death of St. Francis of Assisi
After spending the last few years of his life almost completely blind, St. Francis of Assisi dies in 1226 as he recites Psalm 141 or Psalm 142, according to differing sources.
July 16, 1228 St. Francis of Assisi Canonized
Only two years after his death, the Catholic Church (specifically, Pope Gregory IX) recognizes him as a saint — the next day, the Pope lays the foundation for the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
1978 Remains Confirmed and Re-Entombed
After his hidden burial place is first discovered in 1818, a new, neo-classical style crypt is created and, in 1978, his remains are tested and confirmed by the Pope’s commission of scholars and he is put in a glass urn within the old tomb.

Wooden Dry-Docks?
The USS Emory S. Land (AS-39), a submarine tender, has recently docked a couple of times for overhaul in Mare Island’s dry dock 2. She owed her presence in that dry dock to decisions made a century and a quarter ago. Then, like now, the US Navy was limited by the lack of shoreside infrastructure and specifically, dry docks.
In 1897 Rear Admiral Francis Bunce chaired a board investigating the lack of shore infrastructure. That board recommended a forty percent increase in the number of dry docks at naval shipyards which included a new dry dock 2 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard that was to accommodate the largest naval warship envisioned. To save money, the new Mare Island dry dock was to be constructed of timber rather than stone or concrete. Believe it or not timber dry docks were considered by some to be just as durable as a stone dock (Mare Island’s first floating drydock was constructed of wood and lasted nearly 40 years before it was completely worn out and scrapped). The dock was so long that it had to be angled in from the waterfront to fit without impacting existing facilities. Following debate, the new dry dock was authorized and funded by Congress, but the Navy Bureau of Yard and Docks was not happy with the proposed timber construction. Experience had taught them that timber graving docks deteriorated in 20-25 years and were subject to catastrophic flooding.
As a result, the Secretary of the Navy became engaged to obtain additional funds to allow the proposed timber dock at Mare Island to be changed to concrete. In late 1899 the Board of Trade of San Francisco and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce adopted resolutions asking the California delegation, in Congress to aid the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of the Navy Bureau of Yard and Docks in their efforts to have the construction material changed. The effort was successful, and a concrete dry dock was constructed. The new dry dock was the largest dry dock at any naval shipyard at that time. The decision to use concrete was to prove wise as the new dry dock was to serve the Navy through two world wars, the Korean, Vietnam, and Cold Wars. The dry dock continues in use to this day by the private Mare Island Dry Dock LLC. It is hard to say what would have happened if the dry dock had been built of timber as originally proposed, but certainly the dock would not have been available during our Nation’s greatest hour of need during World War II.
