The municipalities located in the Nansa Valley are the following: Lamasón, Puentenansa, Cosío, San Sebastián de Garabandal, Tudanca, Polaciones, a part of the Cabuérniga municipality corresponding to the town of Carmona, Herrerías and Val de San Vicente.

During the Late Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime this region belonged to the lordships of the house of the marquises of Aguilar de Campoo.

Fortitude, Memory, Connection

"The cardinal virtue of Fortitude represented by a seated woman, her right hand on a column (possibly a modern impression)" ca. 1480–1520

The cardinal virtue of fortitude is often depicted as a woman carrying in her arms a large column, from this imagery we can interpret the meaning of the virtue to be akin to something like "strength", or perhaps "perseverance". Indeed, with the latin root fortis meaning "strong", the woman carrying the column is demonstrating her physical strength. As a virtue however, fortitude requires another sort of inner strength, a solidity of will, or resilience in the face of challenge. Fortitude is not only a virtue in the sense that it allows us to be steadfast in cultivating our sense of morality, but in the vaster sense that it is a skill to be used in many instances which require it. Cultivating this virtue can be done simple with self practice, perhaps by setting personal goals like reading a book for a certain amount of time without getting distracted. This virtue could be demonstrated and practiced by standing up for oneself in our relationships, holding steadfastly to a belief, or even pushing for a bit more distance during a run when it feels like you want to give up.

The cultivation of a virtue like this is not only done by oneself, as with any virtue we need exemplars and role models on which to base our understanding of the virtues and our goals. When considering people that have the trait of fortitude, my mind first goes to suffragist Alice Paul. Among her accomplishments as a leader of the women's suffrage movement in the United States, she had endured great hardships to ensure that she remained strict in her conviction. She (along with other suffragist women) was sentenced to seven months in prison for "obstructing traffic" during a picketing protest. While she was in prison, she organized a hunger strike in which she was force fed through her nose after refusing to eat. I cannot imagine the intense strength of will which would be required to endure... A moral exemplar in more ways than one, Alice Paul embodies the virtue of fortitude for her strength of mind and solidity of her beliefs. There is something to be said about the moral energy surrounding the virtue of fortitude, is is an idea which we can cultivate within ourselves by taking note of the ways in which virtuous people (like Alice Paul) have demonstrated it. We know that fortitude is not a virtue only expressed in dire situations (though it can be), it can be practiced and cultivated within our daily routines and interactions with others. And while fortitude can serve a larger purpose as a great, heroic example of strength, it also serves as a way to enrich our lives personally by serving a human "need". So what is this "need" that fortitude fills? I believe that it can differ between people based on the ways in which it is cultivated and utilized. The cultivation of fortitude can fulfill the need to belong and have meaning; as we fortify our beliefs and character, we become more sure of ourselves and our place in the world. Cultivating fortitude can promote the feeling of accomplishment in instances of it's utilization, in those moments where we did succeed in reading for an hour straight without checking our phone, or where we navigated a negative experience calmly and with resilience. We see the personification of fortitude with her heavy stone column, we see that she is enduring, and that brings about inspiration that we too can persevere under the weight of our own hardships.

To find examples of fortitude in history, one must look to those figures that believed steadfastly in a cause, a movement, a message. This may seem a loose guideline for a search, but those that create change are often people that had to show great fortitude whilst working towards it. In seeing "Fortitude" on the list of virtues on the Forward into Memory website, my first thought was of a woman named Yu Gwan-soon (유관순). She was a student at Ehwa Women's University who participated in protests for Korean independence in 1919. Yu Gwan-soon was jailed at the age of 17 for her role in the protests where she was subsequently tortured and killed. While in prison, she advocated for her own release, and the release of the other prisoners, and even organized a protest within the prison. A profound example of one exemplifying the virtue of fortitude, while in prison she writes "...this physical pain does not compare to the pain of losing my nation". I first learned about Yu Gwan-soon this year during my visit to the Seodaemun Prison Museum in Seoul, South Korea where I was able to stand in the cell in which she was imprisoned, and learn of her story. Continuing on my "entrance of the forest" of persons of fortitudinous virtue, I clicked on the page of a woman named Kim Nansa (김란사). She was a Korean woman who desired enlightenment and knowledge, she applied to Ehwa University, and was denied as married women were not allowed to enroll. Upon this denial, she showed great fortitude in pursuing enlightenment, she is quoted as replying to the school's rejection with the words: “My life is pitch-black like in the middle of the night. Would you give me a chance to find light?”, a compelling statement that moved the school to accept her as a student. After further reading and watching a speech by Professor Hope May (which can be found here) I discovered that Kim Nansa was the professor and mentor of Yu Gwan-soon, as well as the leader of a student club discussing national liberation. Perhaps this is not a solid set of directions that will lead one to the entrance of the forest, but rather an example that these connections, the red thread of memory, between virtuous people and events can be found in many places along the way.

NASA сжало экипаж SpaceX Crew-9 до двух человек из-за Starliner — на МКС полетят россиянин и американец

Аэрокосмическое агентство NASA сократило экипаж миссии Crew-9 компании SpaceX до двух человек. К Международной космической станции отправятся американский астронавт Ник Хейг (Nick Hague), а также российский космонавт Александр Горбунов. Миссия Crew-9 отправится к МКС «не раньше» 24 сентября. На этом же корабле �� феврале следующего года планируется вернуть на Землю задержавшийся на станции экипаж корабля Boeing Starliner — Барри Уилмора (Barry Wilmore) и Суниту Уильямс (Sunita Williams).

Уилмор и Уильямс прибыли на МКС в июне и должны были пробыть там всего около недели. Однако утечки гелия и проблемы с клапанами на корабле Starliner сначала задержали их возвращение, а затем и вовсе заставили NANSA отказаться от использования Starliner для возвращения астронавтов на Землю. Аэрокосмическое агентство решило вместо этого вернуть Уилмора и Уильямс домой на капсуле Dragon компании SpaceX с миссией Crew-9.

Изначально в состав миссии Crew-9 входили четыре члена экипажа. Помимо Ника Хейга и Александра Горбунова, который должен отправиться на корабле SpaceX к МКС в рамках двустороннего соглашения между NASA и российским «Роскосмосом», должны были лететь Зена Кардман (Zena Cardman) в роли командира миссии и Стефани Уилсон (Stephanie Wilson) в роли специалиста. Решение сократить экипаж до двух человек в NASA не объясняют, но у Кардман и Уилсон будет право на перераспределение мест в рамках будущих полётов.

«Хотя мы уже прибегали к практике изменения состава экипажей в прошлом, сокращение численности экипажа для этой миссии оказалось для нас сложным решением, к которому придётся приспособиться, учитывая, что экипаж тренировался именно для полёта в составе четырех человек. Я полностью доверяю нашему экипажу, который отлично проявил себя на протяжении всей подготовки к этой миссии», — прокомментировал старший астронавт NASA Джо Акаба (Joe Acaba).

Что касается неисправного корабля Starliner компании Boeing, то его планируется автономно вернуть на Землю 6 сентября. На борту корабля никого не будет. Управление кораблём будет осуществляться дистанционно с Земли, в случае такой необходимости. Корабль должен приземлиться на полигоне Уайт-Сандс в Нью-Мексико примерно через 6 часов после отбытия от станции.

Day 70 - to Brañavieja

Cloud and steady drizzle all morning meant limited views of anything more than 30 metres away, with the whole day all up above 1200 metres.

I moved eastwards around the Palencia mountains to Hoz de Abiada, and then on a road into the ski resort at Alto Campoo. The road goes through the newly constructed village of Brañavieja, where the lifts are based, at 1640 metres. The whole village is seasonally occupied, today a ghost town, though the construction design blends better with the surroundings than many I have been to. The road then winds on to its terminus for a further 6 kilometres, at 1980 metres. There are views across to the Picos, but not today.

From the head of the road it’s about an hour’s hike to the summit of Tres Mares, at 2175 metres, easy certainly, but made more of an adventure with a temperature of just 4C, a decent northerly wind lowering that by a few, mist and drizzle, and the occasional ice and snow under foot. It was back out with the merino under-layers today.

After a couple of hours out I retreated back down the road to the village to park up, it was out the wind, and had some breaks in the cloud during the afternoon.

We did get the occasional visitor while watching the IPL..

The inscription up at the terminus car park is of a Spanish hymn composed in 1971, on the construction of the road and resort, by Juan José Guerrero and Gerardo Diego, which they dedicated to Isidoro Palacio, the manager of the Alto Campoo project.

It begins appropriately for a day like today.. (a rough translation)

“Not a veil of mist, nor of rain 
or sleet, nor a gift of snow, 
nor a bubbling of enshrouded fountains, 
was lost.”

Of interest are the lines..

“To the three seas that surround it, 
my waters run - distinct and pure.
To the Ebro, the Híjar, the Pisuerga, the Duero 
and the Nansa tumble from the cliff.

To three destinations: 
Mediterranean, Atlantic, Cantabrian. “

From this massif 5 rivers flow to 3 seas (the name of the mountain).

Though some dispute about the Duero, which actually rises in Picos de Urbión, 200 kilometres south east of here, though the Pisuerga is the Duero’s second largest tributary, so technically maybe..

The Cantabrian sea is what the Spanish call the Bay of Biscay.

The Nansa Valley is located in Cantabria, Spain, between the valleys of Liébana and Saja. It is bounded by the Sierra del Escudo to the north and the Sierra de Peña Labra to the south.

Through the valley of the Nansa circulates the river of the same name that by its torrential and erosive character, especially in its headwaters, forms slopes of steep slopes. The region presents a great landscape quality, due to its topographic characteristics of high peaks, wide native forests, especially oak (Quercus robur) and beech, and low population density dedicated mostly to livestock (primary sector).

Hard Facts

Nansa leaned against Ghalyn, the two sitting back-to-back.   Both exhausted to the point standing up felt like a near impossible task.   She casually flicked a now gooey piece of flesh from her leg plate, smearing it.  Not that it mattered.  She was covered in pieces of those they had been fighting.  

            “I don’t know how I am going to go look Ewan in the face now,” she muttered, her normally cheerful demeanor drug down into near despair.

            “He will understand.  It was very much our lives or theirs.  Remember Dracthyr were made for the sole purpose of killing.  They crossed over the line into enemy.  The situation was very much us or them, and I have spent far too long on this sentient rock of a planet to die to a bunch of treacherous scaley assholes,” the warlock growled.

            She sighed and touched the plume on her helm, much bedraggled after the fighting.  She twined it around her leather clad fingers idly as she took Ghalyn’s words.  “I suppose you are right.  It is exactly why he refused to come back, not to be what he was made to be.  I can not imagine living with the knowledge that I was made to simply kill.  Illidari made a choice to do so.   Sure the earlier Ebon were made against their will, but they are well not living.”

            “They do not feel as living do,”  Ghalyn said, turning his head enough to look partially over his shoulder at her.   Seeing the bright beaming smile gone, dimmed to a concerned frown he sighed.

            Ignoring the fact the paladin was covered in gore he turned and wrapped his arms around her armored form.  The gesture was what mattered, but at least he could press his cheek against hers.

            “It is easy for me to remember how young you are Nansa.  Well in moments like this.   I have lived far longer and experienced things I hope you never do.”

            She leaned against the snow white skinned Quel’dorei, closing her eyes.  “Thank you Ghalyn.  I can not imagine the things you have lived through.   So many friends you have lost,” she did not add loved ones, avoiding even the mention of that word considering how he had lost his wife years ago.

            “You go on.  The other options are completely unacceptable and not worth thought,” he replied reaching out as she fished her hip flask off her belt.  He took it from her and opened it with her eyes glued to his hands.  A quick sniff made him wrinkle his nose at the distinct odder of whiskey.  

She gasped as he began to pour out the hip flask.  Before she could move to stop him, his words stopped her, hard and cold.  “You are not turning to this crutch in my presence. Be angry if you want, but you have a personality that could easily end you at the bottom of a bottle consistently Nansa.”

Her hand fell back into her lap.  Atrianis had been adamant about that as well, chastising her about her habit of getting black out drunk.  She hated to admit it, but it was a mechanism of denial and running from her problems.

“You are right… and not the first friend to chastise me for it.   I just don’t want to think about the hard things.”

“No one does.  You find ways to accept what is and move on from it.  Sometimes there is no healthy way too, not right away.  I have the luxury of time you do not in the end.  I envy how brightly humans burn and their passions,”  Ghalyn replied before handing back her empty flask.   Then he handed over his waterskin filled with a fragrant herbal tea. 

She sighed and drank her fill before handing it back to him.  “You are nothing like your sister you know?   I still have trouble believing the two of you are related by your manners and looks.”

“Mmm, I am a couple centuries older than her for one.  She grew up in the Highlands while my parents and I trained the human magus.   I grew up among elves in our homeland.  As to looks, I was not always the crimson eyed pasty freak  you see now,” he chuckled.

She took her gloves off and traced the jaws of the tattoo on the side of his shaved skull.  “Nah, you are no freak.  Made some choices that marked you in a physical way is all.  Looking back at history I cannot say I blame you.  I mean my sister us a warlock.   Not all of you are Guldan after all.”

“True enough.  Though I promise you if my parents ever set eyes on me they would disown me on the spot.  For now they think I am long dead.  Ely and I both agree that is just for the best.   I despise them anyhow, and she finally understands why.”  He took back his skin and took a few swallows before rising to his feet gracefully, offering her a hand.

Nansa accepted his help and rose to her feet, the herbal mixture giving her a bit of energy back.   “So you never told me you knew how to handle blades.  You saved my life back there,”  she said calmly.

She was to heavily engaged by a pair of enemy Dracthyr to see another moving to flank her.  Ghalyn had snatched a blade from a fallen enemy, as his demons where engaged on another front, and launched himself into hand to hand combat with the would-be backstabber.

He shrugged, “Before I was this I was a Spell Breaker.   I remember well my lessons of the blades.   Let us get to a safe camp and rest Nansa.   We need rest and food, for we both know there will be more enemies to deal with soon enough.”

She nodded and snatched her helmet from the ground and buckling it in place.  “I could use a bit of food.”
