Sergent Quark Amaya McFluffers has been my buddy for fifteen years. And today I have been given devastating news about his health. I've been in tears, crying all evening.

Quark's Story

I found him in Ewing Park (nicknamed Lilac Park by family). He was hiding in a lilac bush. I lured him out with the ham I ate out of a package (since I just found out I had to go gluten free for my health). I was out for a walk, and it was a very cold day. I found him the first week of November.

I was back in my home state after running away to Wyoming to escape abuse. Except Wyoming hadn't gone well, and it took me months to save up enough to take the train home. I had nowhere to go, so I was living with my oldest sister. She was being abusive, and I was trying to sort out what to do next.

Quark ate the ham but wouldn't let me close enough. He was tiny. I thought he was a brown cat at first.

I walked back, sad I couldn't pet him. I was ill that day, but had taken a walk to clear my sinuses. A friend dropped by with medicine and urged me to come outside.

And who was nestled against my door? Quark. He'd followed me home. We brought him inside, and he was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. I gave him a bath since he was covered in mud, and that's when I discovered he was a white cat with grey ears, tails, and feet.

My friend helped me prepare -- litter box, food, water bowl, etc. We took him to the vet, and when I told the vet, she looked sad and said that kitten mills dumped runts in that park all the time. So I adopted Quark.

We've been inseparable for fifteen years.

He's the sweetest kitty. Sure, he looks like a grumpy cat, but he has never bitten me. Only cuddled me. He doesn't like to lay on anyone but me, but he'll sit by people. He brings me his toys when I'm sad, and he likes to mirror me. Especially when I'm watching something -- he'll sit by me and watch too. Or if I'm reading a book, he wants to lay on a book so he can "read" too.

He is way too smart. He learned that if he licks half his nose then he can trick me into thinking he swallowed his pill, but truthfully, he pocketed it in his cheek to spit out later. He can open doors if they aren't fully latched. He loves to play chase games, and he loves the 'fish for a kitty' game.

The silly nanobug is another favorite of his. He loves it when I turn it on so he can bat the little robot around the kitchen.

This little fella has been with me through everything.

He was with me when I returned to college to finish my degree. He became very ill, and I nursed him to health. He almost lost his left eye, but the girlfriend I had at the time helped me give him his meds twice a day. We saved his eye, but he had a small scar on that eye ever since.

I made sure he had all the toys and cat trees, and everything he could ever want. Treats shared with him twice a day, and lots of cuddles.

When I built my little robot, I programmed it to chase after movement but to turn around when it sighted the color white. So the robot played the chase game with Quark, and he found that delightful. He'd often meow at me to turn on the robot so they could play together. I still wish I had enough money to buy that robot off from the university.

Then when I graduated disaster struck. He and I struggled with homelessness. We hung out in my car, and then slept on the sofas of friends until I found a place to stay so that he can have a stable home again.

I always made sure he had a secure spot to stay no matter what. When I had to go out of town and couldn't take him with me, I had two friends I trusted to care for him. He'd be overjoyed when I returned.

He has seen me date a few women, and only liked two of the four I dated.

He watched as I came to the realization that I'm nonbinary, and then cuddled with me as I debated on if I wanted top surgery or not. Or if I wanted to microdose on T or not.

I would panic whenever he showed any signs of illness, because he's my buddy and I want him healthy and happy. So one time, he was not peeing at all for like three days.

So I took him to the vet, and the vet tried to get a sample of his pee by using a syringe to pull it from his bladder. Except that must be what he needed as he unleashed all that stored up pee and covered the exam table and the vet's arms.

Turns out he just had a cold.

When the last person I dated -- my abuser -- turned out to be horrifying, Quark was there to remind me that love is real. And he gave me the strength to reach out to the people I was banned from speaking to -- together we escaped and hid from my abuser. Where no one knew where he and I were living for several months.

He let me cry into his fur as I struggled with healing from the horror of my abuser.

Then I found my own place again. Quark celebrated with me as I ate ice cream and he snacked on his favorite treats.

He supervised my work when I made presentations and trainings on trans people and queer folks for progressive churches. He offered me toys when I was inevitably hurt by those same churches.

When he was ill again, I worked hard with the vet to narrow down, and we realized he had food allergies. Once we swapped his food and gave him anti-inflammatory meds, he recovered.

He watched me game with my Legendfire chosen family every Thursday night for fourteen years.

When the pandemic started, he was right there with me. When I caught Covid due to the neglect of others, he watched over me. He's been with me with despite my LongCovid worsening my condition and confining me to a wheelchair.

He had another health scare, and that's when the vet and I discovered he had mild kidney disease, but the food change and more wet food helped manage it.

During my long journey to get on disability, Quark helped by laying atop my paperwork. Brought laughter when he played, and curled up with me at night or when I couldn't get out of bed.

We had been moving yearly, but then I found a home that I can call my own. We've been here for two and a half years.

He's been here through thick and thin, and I've done all I could to make sure he lived like a King.

We cuddle together. Watch shows together. I read to him, and sing him songs. I will get out my instruments and play him music I make up on the spot. He watches me play video games.

Today the vet told me they found a mass in his abdomen. He's been struggling with eating, and he'd lost far too much weight out of nowhere. He's already so small. He can't afford to lose any more weight.

It's a tumor.

He's too small for surgery and anesthesia, due to his age and weight. He's not a good candidate for chemotherapy either (not sure I could afford it either).

All the vet can do is offer steroids, which if this is a benign tumor might diminish it. Pain meds for any pain and an appetite stimulant to get his weight back up. I set up monthly appointments, but if his health takes a turn for worse sooner, I'm to make an appointment immediately.

She couldn't offer me any estimate for how long he has.

My little buddy. My precious boy. The fluffmaster, fluffbutt, fluffosaurus.

I've been weeping and weeping. He doesn't understand why, and so he cuddles me in hopes of uplifting my spirits.

Please, let him and I have a little longer, universe. Don't take him yet, Death.

But I don't want him to suffer either.

I am shattered. Weeping, begging the universe to have mercy on this little guy.

I just want a little longer. Just a little. Is that too selfish?

Quark, buddy, you are such a sweet, gentle kitty, and you are the best kitty ever. You deserve everything. I love you. May we be granted a miracle.

But if no miracle looks our way, then know that you will always be in my heart, Quark. I'll make sure to pay the love you've given me forward to other kitties and other people.

I love you, Quark, and I will be here, as always, as you fight this one last time.

I’m watching Zombieverse on Netflix (up to episode 5). It’s pretty good. The integration of gameplay mechanics is very smooth, I like how there is more than one type of losing status condition (Dead vs infected) and the editing is quirky in the literal but vaguely positive sense.

However, there’s a lot of talk and filler, the pace is fairly slow, they seem to be trying spin it as a social experiment (when it really shouldn’t be) and they keep trying to convince us that it’s all natural and nothing is staged, when it most clearly is (i.e. the scene where they’re ‘knocked unconscious’ by the car crash).

I find the lack of explanation (so far) bizarrely amusing: This is Zombieverse, a universe where there are zombies. No evil mega-corporations or nanobugs in the ear. No mad scientists or experiments gone wrong. Just: there are zombies. But then again, this isn’t the kind of show you watch for the lore. You watch it for gore and action and ‘*!*Drama*!*’ and… alive-ist micro-aggressions?

Frankly, the thing that I’m enjoying most is the fact not only is this the fourth zombie gameshow I’ve watched, but it’s the fourth language I’ve watched one in. (It’s also the only one I’ve seen without the letter Z standalone in the title). Clearly the genre has universal appeal. The subs are pretty good quality, although written text is only translated when no-one is speaking at the time.

Would I recommend it? I think it’s a case by case basis. I’m only very mildly invested, and I do end up fast forwarding bits to get to the gameplay. If you like zombies, like more reality side of gameshows and don’t mind some wackiness, then you’ll probably enjoy it. The production quality is high.
