noel and identity loss...

trying to articulate why it feels wrong to call him charlie, because thats still him but at the same time not.

he's changed and things cant go back to the way they were, noel took up a new name one to remember but also to move on

i don't think noel is a fake name to him more so just a new identity he's taken up as an extension of himself. or at least someone he's rebuilt himself as after the dreamlands. i don't think he's discarded charlie as an identity but that he just has two names that are both very real to him, however just one of them is more in the forefront than the other so he'd be unused to his old name being used.

but i also think that he'd feel extremely disconnected to his old life and name that it would be uncomfortable and feel wrong for him, might feel that his past is catching up to him or maybe he'd be afraid that if he stops using noels name he'd be abandoning him in some way

or just using the name as an escape from the king in yellow who likely would've called him by his original name

i recognise this is like probably nothing at all but it is rotating in my brain and i need to get it out, i love saying shit and being completely incoherent

The leadership/administration of the university asked the faculty/staff for feedback on the recent round of (idiotic, onerous, wildly poorly communicated) budget cuts. I think they may regret having done that.

Good adaptations aren't scene by scene, line by line reenactments of a book. It's a completely different medium, that the creators can use to tell the story a different way. Besides budget issues (just writing a scene where a bunch of crazy stuff happens costs about $0, while portraying it on screen is a different matter), the pacing/flow is different in live action stuff than books.

The SPIRIT of the adaptation is what matters. The original PJO movies weren't bad because Annabeth's hair was brown or they didn't say the dialogue straight from the book or dare I argue, because they mixed in elements from further in the series. Rather, it was bad because the vibe was simply far too edgy. Percy was sassy, it did have humor, monsters were fine, but it fell flat on its face because it didn't understand its characters, its world, or its TONE. THE TONE. It was genuinely awful.

Good adaptations expand on the source material without losing the charm of the original. They understand what makes characters tick and what's at the core of the journey, its not about aesthetics or being faithful to the point of being dull and having nothing new to say.

The PJO series is doing that. Having Rick involved probably helped a lot. It has a rocky start, in my opinion. But from the second half of ep. 2 and into ep. 3, I see it gaining its footing.

The penalty for naughty roosters who try to jump the fence is that they have to take a mugshot with me! This time it’s Sascha, who was trying to run from Jack when he jumped on top of the run and then made me chase him all around the garage, all while screaming bloody murder. Roosters are so dramatic! If you picnic where Fair Folk are, are you safe if you share first? Second? Never be shared with but you can share your own food?

If you give them a written copy of your name when asked, "here's a copy so you won't forget it", have you given them the dangerous part? It may depend on the system, that one, but if a safe response is "you may call me [actual name]" then...maybe? A "copy"...

What if you respond "and yours?" after telling them yours? What about "and may I have yours?" Can they even refuse? Or if you try turning the questions around before you even give yours up. "I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours" is surely binding, if they do tell you a name (which may not even be theirs!), but doesn't specifically state that anything but information is given away. All implication...

"You may have my name, to hold upon your tongue, go release from your lips, but the name that belongs to me is ______." Belongs to me. Is that a binding declaration that they can't actually take it with them? Or will they try and snatch it anyways?

All good questions! My understanding of the food thing is that eating their food on their territory means you've accepted a gift from them, and therefore owe them something in return, which they can use to keep you from leaving. Having a picnic in their territory probably wouldn't put you under the same contract, but it would put you at risk of trespassing laws. Which are probably worse.

And I'm pretty sure your True Name is like the magical equivalent of your social security number, or credit card number. It doesn't matter how the fae learned it, but once they've got it, you're at their mercy. They probably aren't willing to trade their own for yours. They may not be able to tell when you give them a fake one.

All I know about the new descendants movie is osmosis from tumblr and combining that with the media I think of when someone says Alice in Wonderland is making for tbh the movie in my brain is probs very different than what I've heard the new one is like.

And that media is the Royal Ballet's Alice in Wonderland. Its a lovely comic ballet, and my favourite dances are The Mad Hatter's Tea Party (tap! in a ballet! also in this clip played by Steven McRae, who i want to know more about and watch more of his stuff as i have heard good things about from other dancers I know), and the Tart Adage, which is frickin hilarious. (also the way that the King of Hearts just droops around in the background and its like yup. thats Red's dad apparently.)

So uh everyone should watch these clips simply because they're amazing and I love them.

The Terror fandom is so funny to me because the show is so popular (as it should be, it's great), but I've never seen a single person say that the show made them want to read the book or anyone who's read the book saying that show fans should read the book. And as someone who has read the book (albeit more than ten years ago), this is one of the rare occasions on which the adaptation significantly, SIGNIFICANTLY improves on many aspects of the book.

Friends. Do not read the book. Trust me when I say you are probably happier this way. And I say this as someone who ten (fifteen?) years ago really loved the book but looking back...uh...what the fuck was that.

I did it. I finally found my middle name. I've been set on what I'll change my first and last name to for years now, but I was tossing around different middle names still, and it's been one of the things that's kept legally changing my name as not a priority. But I've finally connected to a middle name and I'm kinda itching to finally make it offical offical now. So think it's becoming more of a priority at long last.

It's very evident when I don't think about a particular species when I have to look something up like the gourmand cannibalism, but seeing as though they have a collective pocket dimension where their stomach goes (at least that's where the logic got them in the show instead of being consumed food expelled in energy reflux), if cannibalism didn't implode the two gourmands like how bag of holding inception works then I suppose it's far better than *shudders* perk murk relationships. Got a whole 'house divided' 'alike in dignity' situation over here, Perkulet and Murktague having asses-

...You know what if I get a chance to think about gourmands in more detail I might turn that pocket dimension into a magic thing instead of a xenobiology thing that's just overall bullshit- comes free with potentially real cannibalism but like they've eaten 11 planets I think cannibalism just in general pales in comparison to what they could do-

Well, whatever cannibalism gourmands excuse and all the jokes they have to deal with about perk murk relationships being somehow much much worse, at least they don't get shoveled with 'violent bigots' that 'aren't smart enough to support their lifestyle without destroying their own planet' which well- I don't have any present headcanons as to why Encephalonus is on it's 4th edition yet but let me tell you, when cerebrocrutaceans found out the galvans lost their planet (admittedly to the Highbreed Invasion) and then galvans WEREN'T immediately assumed to have fucked up somewhere, you can bet that Dr Psychobos was one in the crowd that went absolutely livid.
