The rose hips of the beach rose, which is what you see in the pictures, are edible and can be made into jams and jellies or eaten raw. I had never tried one before. They taste sort of like a tomato, but firmer and a little sweeter.

Walking on the Beach June 22, 2024 Nahant, Massachusetts

After the pride festival and grabbing a bite to eat, we planned to go swimming at the beach in Nahant, but the water was too chilly, so we walked along the edge and picked up sand dollars. I was so surprised to find so many intact ones because the only other beach I've been to is Gulf Shores, and 99% of the shells and sand dollars that wash up there are broken into little pieces.

I was riding out to a Nahant promontory yesterday and on the beach I saw for an instant an 18th century woman caked up thick enough to endure a famine. She was pulling on a fishing line and I felt the strings of my heart tug in tandem.

A bird calls and she's gone. I stared at that shoreline until the sun set

Sometimes I illustrate in a hurry.

Summer in the US is a time for barbecues, swimming, picnics, and hiking. I left to go to India as soon as summer began. One month later, I came back. My husband, Caleb, picked me up at the airport. We shoved my luggage into the back of our car, and I sunk into the front seat. I had spent almost twenty-four hours travelling and I smelled like it. My hair was oily, my skin was dry. I had dark circles under my eyes from the hours of no sleep. I had stared at a small grainy screen for over ten hours. I was tired. 

“It’s a great day!” Caleb said. “Mmmhmmm” I replied, thinking about all the comfortable bed I had waiting at home for me. “Let’s go to the beach!” said Caleb. I looked at him wearily. Really? A beach? Now? I wanted to go home and sleep. But hadn’t I always wished that I were more spontaneous? Is this the incredibly small opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone and defy my well laid out plans? After all, unpacking could be done later, and my bed was always going to be there. “Yeah, okay,” I said, “but I don’t have a bathing suit. And I’m super hungry.”

So we swung by Target and a small sandwich shop in Saugus, and we were on our way. I let Caleb drive since I had no idea that we had beaches near our house. Soon, we were in a small town names Nahant. The roads were windy, snaking toward the beach. The large houses were sporting American flags, gearing up for the fourth of July. We found a parking lot, and walked down to the beach. It was crowded. We walked along the length of the beach looking for a vacant spot. 

We found one near the end of the beach, towards the wall. We spread our beach towels and sat down. Ravenous, I pulled out my sandwich and ate it in a quick ten minutes. Then, I was too full to move, so I sat on my towel, looking at the sea, telling Caleb all about my trip to India. We weren’t in the mood to play beach volleyball, or any other beach games that we saw everyone else play. As much as I wanted to be spontaneous and spend a day out in the sun, I could feel the fatigue running through my body, and I was ready to go to sleep. “Can we go home?” I asked, and Caleb agreed. We were both done with the beach.

As we were folding our towels up, I noticed that no one was in the water. “Why is no one swimming?” I asked. “The water’s still cold.” replied Caleb. With the sun blazing down on us, I couldn’t believe that the water would be too cold for even the local people to wade in the water (usually people from Massachusetts can tolerate temperatures of any kind.) “I’m going to try it,” I said and walked toward the shore line. I kicked my slippers off, and marched toward the water. I waded into the water, and instantly my feet became numb. I jumped! I ran back toward Caleb to see him bent over in laughter. “I told you it was cold.”
