Into The Wild
Chapter 1: Daisy
Tumblr media
✧ Into The Wild Series ✧ playlist ✧
words: 2468
Willa Clary gets out of her car and shuts the door with a dull slam, sending up a cloud of dust and scaring off a lizard who had been sunning on a nearby rock. She surveys her surroundings with a grin, taking in the trees, the small clearing of wooden cabins, and the shiny blue lake in the distance. She pulls a faded brochure from her pocket and reads the words she’s read about a thousand times over the last few months:
“Camp Vesuvia: eight weeks of summer fun!”
The photograph on the front shows the same view she’s looking at, but the scene in front of her is far more beautiful than the photo. The trees are more green, the sky more blue, and the cabins around her look even more charming. In the summer heat the air seems to shimmer, giving everything a slightly magical quality. Willa decides that she loves the place already.
When Asra, her best friend and old college roommate, told her about the job opening at the summer camp he works at, she’d jumped at the chance. Asra has told her plenty of stories about what goes on during a summer at Camp Vesuvia and with every story she found herself wanting to be a part of it. He told her about the other people who work there and how fun it is to get to know all of the campers, he told stories of roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories around the fire. He’d also mentioned how beautiful the scenery is, but his description hadn’t done it justice.
All of Asra’s stories brought Willa back to her own childhood, spent in a tiny rural town where exploring nature was pretty much the only activity available. She’d moved away to the big city for college, where she’d hoped to find her way. But after graduating she’d found herself with a degree, but no job, and an aching feeling that she wasn’t where she was supposed to be.
And since Willa loves nature and children (and also really needed a job) she figured a job at a summer camp would be a perfect fit for her. So she’d packed her bags and driven out into the middle of nowhere, her home for the next eight weeks.
The door of the cabin closest to her opens with the sound of a bell, and Willa’s eyes are drawn to the tall woman standing in the doorway. Her height draws attention, as does her brightly colored purple hair. Willa takes in the woman’s perfectly styled outfit and heeled boots, she doesn’t look like she belongs in the middle of the woods, but something about her seems very welcoming.
“Welcome, Willa, we’ve been expecting you!” The woman calls, beckoning her over with a perfectly manicured hand.
“Hi! You must be Nadia?” Willa asks, moving to shake the camp director’s already outstretched hand.
“Yes I am, if you should require anything over the course of the summer I can be found here in the office. I’ve been eagerly awaiting your arrival, Asra has told me quite a bit about you,” Nadia smiles, shutting the door behind them as Willa follows her inside.
The front room of the cabin is small but well decorated. A large polished wood desk takes up the majority of the room and bookshelves and filing cabinets cover most of the remaining wall space. Nadia settles into the chair behind the desk and Willa takes the empty seat in front of it. She looks around as Nadia searches for a file, taking in the stylish furnishing and decor which looks surprisingly perfect in the wood paneled cabin.
Nadia finds the correct file and riffles through it briefly before pulling out a small stack of paper which she hands to Willa. “I’ll just need your final signature on some of the paperwork and we’ll get you all settled in. We expect the first round of campers tomorrow morning at nine, and things will only get busier after then.”
“How many campers do you expect in total?” Willa asks. She looks through the paperwork quickly as she signs it, standard onboarding and personal information, all as expected.
Nadia frowns slightly at the question and her forehead furrows, portraying a bit of the stress hidden behind her cheerful facade. “We have nearly seventy campers staying for the entire summer, the most we’ve ever had at one time. Which is precisely why I decided to take on more help. We have a small but reliable staff here but I thought it was time for some reinforcements.”
Willa hands over the completed paperwork and watches as Nadia carefully looks it over. “Wow, that’s a lot of kids, but I’m sure we can handle it!”
“That’s the sort of encouraging spirit we need around here,” Nadia smiles. “Asra told me you were an ‘eternal optimist’ and I hoped his description would prove accurate.”
Willa blushes slightly at the compliment and smiles back at Nadia, making a mental note to thank Asra later for his apparently glowing recommendation. “It’s easy to be optimistic in a place as beautiful as this.”
The sound of a bell alerts them as the front door opens and Nadia stands to greet the person entering, “Ah, here’s Asra.”
“Willa!” Asra calls from behind her and WIlla nearly knocks her chair over in her haste to hug him.
“Asra! I’ve missed you!” Willa takes in the familiar appearance of her friend. Asra wears a pair of overalls over a “Camp Vesuvia” shirt. A name tag pinned to one of the straps says his name, written in familiar handwriting and accented with a sparkly smiley face sticker.
“I’m happy you decided to take my advice and come to Camp Vesuvia, you’re going to love it here,” Asra says.
“Yes, I hope that you will, Willa,” Nadia smiles at the two of them before taking her seat again. She points to the wall behind Willa, “Your room key is hanging on that board, it’s the one with the red ribbon. I’ll leave Asra to show you the way. I'm quite busy with last minute preparations, but I hope you’ll find the lodgings comfortable.”
Willa turns to the board, spotting the key hanging all the way at the top. “Thank you, Nadia!” She stands on her tiptoes to reach for the key and Asra laughs, reaching up from behind her. He easily grabs the key and hands it to her, ignoring the annoyed expression on her face.
“Still as short as always,” Asra teases.
“Still as rude as always,” Willa frowns, but she’s too excited to stay mad.
“Let’s get you moved in. Did you bring that scarf you said you’d give me?” Asra heads for the door and Willa follows, laughing at his enthusiasm.
“Yes, and I brought extra yarn so I can make you another if you’d like—” Willa’s words are cut off as the door opens before Asra can get to it. A large figure stands in the doorway, and Willa and Asra step to the side to let him in. He has to duck a little to enter the room, and Willa looks up at him, noticing shoulder length dark hair and a park ranger’s uniform.
Nadia stands to greet him, “Ah, Muriel, excellent timing. I was just going to call you. We’ve had a few bear sightings around camp and I wanted to go over our safety plans, perhaps we can ensure all of the trash receptacles are in working order.”
The man nods in agreement, but his attention moves away from Nadia and over to Willa. When he notices that she’s looking back at him he swiftly looks away, clearing his throat as he takes a step closer to Nadia’s desk and away from Willa. In the near split second when they looked at each other, Willa noticed how bright his eyes were, green like the trees outside. Her eyes stay on him, noting the way his posture slumps a little as if he’s used to being too tall for a space.
“Oh, pardon me for not making introductions sooner. Muriel, this is WIlla, she’s our new counselor and the arts and craft director,” Nadia gestures at Willa, “And Willa, this is Muriel. He’s the park ranger assigned to our area. The ranger station is about a mile from here. if anything goes wrong he’s the first to call.” Nadia gives Muriel a warm smile and he flushes faintly, eyes resolutely staring down at the wooden floors.
“Muriel’s great, he’s the best at roasting marshmallows,” Asra says, finally pulling Willa’s attention away from the man. Asra raises an eyebrow at her in question and Willa looks away, brushing past him to move towards the door.
She turns to glance over her shoulder at Muriel, who still seems to be finding the floorboards exceedingly interesting. “It was nice to meet you, Muriel,” Willa says, giving him a cheery smile. Muriel looks up in surprise and stares at her for a minute before nodding in response. Willa turns to leave, Asra right behind her.
“‘It was nice to meet you, Muriel’” Asra imitates in a sing-song voice that sounds surprisingly accurate to Willa’s. She scoffs and fights the urge to shove his arm as if they were twelve, she sticks her tongue out at him instead— much more mature.
“Clearly he’s attractive, you can’t blame me for staring,” Willa says, rolling her eyes at Asra’s over-eager expression.
“True, I can’t blame you, and like I said— Muriel’s a great guy. He’s a bit shy and doesn’t like to socialize much as you may have noticed, but he’s saved us from quite a few scrapes over the years,” Asra recounts. “He repaired the roof of the main hall after a thunderstorm knocked over a tree last year, and he even put out a fire once when a campfire got out of hand.” “Well, he sounds like quite the man.” Willa hides her smile as she turns to open the trunk of her car. She hauls out a suitcase painted a bright blue color and dotted with daisies, she’d done the art herself one day when she’d run out of canvases and needed something new to paint on. Asra grabs her other bag and shuts the trunk, giving her another smirk.
“Let's get going, I’ll give you a full tour along the way.” Asra hoists her duffle bag over his shoulder as he walks. Willa follows behind, taking in all the sights as he leads the way through Camp Vesuvia.
Asra delivers on his promise of a tour, pointing out everything they pass along the way. “The building we just left is the office, but we all call it ‘the palace’ because Nadia’s the queen around here. Don’t worry though, she’s a benevolent ruler,” he laughs. Nadia seems kind, but she clearly expects the best from everyone and Willa would hate to disappoint her.
They pass the arts and crafts cabin, the main hall where meals are eaten, and each of the cabins for campers. Asra stops in front of a small building next to the main hall, it looks homey and a small puff of smoke comes out of its chimney. A wooden sign by the door is marked with a large pot and a spoon and judging by the delicious smell of bread emanating from the building, this is the kitchen.
“Here’s the kitchen, Portia works here along with Hestion and Selasi. You’ll meet them at dinner. I’m convinced they’re the best cooks in the world, and Selasi’s pumpkin bread is legendary.” For a minute it seems like Asra might go in to look for the aforementioned pumpkin bread, but he turns away from the door and continues on the dirt path forward.
He points to another small cabin to their right, “And here’s the first aid center. Julian is our resident doctor, he’s Portia’s older brother,”
“Ah, I seem to remember someone named Julian from quite a few of your stories,” Willa says, jokingly waggling her eyebrows. Asra grimaces and looks straight ahead, not meeting her eyes.
“Yes well, that was in the past. Those stories are old,” Asra waves a hand as if to show how unimportant those stories were. “Let’s move on, over here is where we store the canoes! Lucio is our recreation director, he’s kind of an asshole but the kids think he’s cool.”
The tour continues on until they reach a larger looking cabin tucked back into the trees. It has a wrap-around porch dotted with comfortable looking chairs and a bright green door. It looks welcoming, and there's a great view of the lake from the front porch. Willa can picture herself out there enjoying a cup of coffee or knitting.
“And here we have our final destination for the day, the counselor's cabin where everyone on staff here lives.” Asra shows her through the comfortable three story cabin, it’s more modern than Willa had expected. She thinks back to the well decorated front office, the palace, and decides that Nadia must be responsible for this cabin’s design as well.
Finally, Asra leads her to a closed door on the second floor and she unlocks it, entering a small but cozy looking bedroom. The walls are painted sky blue and a vase on the dresser has fresh flowers in it, she immediately feels at home. Willa sets her suitcase down by the dresser and flops down on the bed facedown.
“This is going to be so fun!” she squeals, her words slightly muffled by a pillow.
Asra flops down next to her, “You’re going to love it! The camp comes alive when the campers get here, and I bet you’ll be great at teaching art.”
“I hope so, but it’s been a while since I made a friendship bracelet,” Willa laughs, pointing to Asra’s wrist which is bedecked with half a dozen colorful string bracelets.
“Campers made these for me,” he explains proudly, lifting his arm up so Willa can see the bracelets better. “A lot of the same kids come back every year and most of the staffers do too. I think you’ll fit right in, this is going to be the best summer!”
Willa looks out the window next to her bed and catches a glimpse of Nadia and the park ranger, Muriel, out inspecting the grounds. Muriel looks up at the window as if he can sense her gaze and she smiles and waves at him. He doesn’t respond, quickly walking away towards the trees, but Willa thinks she might’ve seen a hint of a smile tug at his lips as he looked at her.
“I’ve got a good feeling about this summer, too,” Willa says, turning back to Asra with a giddy grin. “I can’t wait!”

HaSahyan / The Swimmer (2021)
Tumblr media
Director: Adam Kalderon
Stars: Omer Perelman Striks, Asaf Jonas, Nadia Kucher...
Erez, a rising swimming star, arrives at a godforsaken training camp. The winner of the competition there wins one ticket to the Olympics. And then there is Nevo, beautiful and gifted, who awakens subconscious desires in Erez.
I think this was a very good movie. It was very focused on what it was trying to achieve and the aesthetics were really nice, which all kinda fit together. Nothing was out of place here for me and there wasn’t a moment in the film that didn’t serve its purpose. Just a very good crafted and compact movie with handsome guys and good acting. The thing I didn’t like in the movie was mostly that jerk of a coach. I really don’t know why Erez put up with him for so long and still continued with the competition. I know he’s competitive and he wants to win, but there has to be a point where you cross the line and say enough is enough and you start taking better care of yourself and your health. Because, as Paloma said in the movie (which is a quote I remembered because I really liked it and agreed with it):
Competitive sports is a tragedy for the body and the soul.
I really liked the ending, though - the idea it emphasized of not having to win the actual competition to reach the point of self-realization and your true potential. In other words, Erez was already a winner just by winning the emotional and mental warfare that was going on in his mind and which stemmed from his surroundings. The finishing gymnastics pose that Paloma taught him and the look on her face when he performed it in front of everybody was really touching as Erez managed to keep his head high despite the pressure he had to go through.

Favorites : I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)
Tumblr media
Over at the I Know What You Did podcast, where Millie and Danielle have spent the month of February focusing specifically on Black creators in honor of Black History Month, the films covered have been mostly serious, as compelling as they’ve been.  Imagine my surprise at the fact that, for the final episode of this stretch, the focus would turn to not only one of the most prolific Black families of creators out there, but quite possibly the current first-family of funny, the Wayans family.  While Don’t Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood is not my jam, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka is and always will be, and with that DVD already positioned for a Black History Month viewing, it jumped from being on the list to a position at the top.
Jack Spade (Keenen Ivory Wayans) returns to Any Ghetto, U.S.A. after a tour of duty to find his brother Junebug has lost his life to a case of “overgold”.  Jack vows to care for his mother Belle Brown-Spade (Ja’net Dubois) and Junebug’s widow Cheryl Spade (Dawnn Lewis), but after the women are threatened by Leonard (Damon Wayans) and Willie (Kadeem Hardison), henchmen to the notorious Mr. Big (John Vernon), Jack makes the choice to eliminate the negative element from his neighborhood.  He reaches out to former hero John Slade (Bernie Casey) for assistance, and initially Slade refuses, but after Leonard and Willie make an attempt on Slade’s life, he decides to join the fight.  In hopes of evening the score, he enlists the help of some of his former vigilante friends : Hammer (Isaac Hayes), Slammer (Jim Brown), Flyguy (Antonio Fargas) and Kung Fu Joe (Steve James).  With both sides at full power and intent on removal of the opposition, tensions rise and bullets fly.
Outside of the Zucker/Abrams/Zucker camp, I haven’t seen anyone pull off trope-based humor the way that the Wayans family has been able to, and it all started with Keenen Ivory Wayans and his early Hollywood work.  I’m Gonna Git You Sucka embraced two different sets of tropes, shuffled them together like a deck of cards, and dealt them out to audiences in a manner where everyone got a winning hand.  First and foremost, the film is an ode to Blaxploitation classics, and all of the earmarks of the genre are present, up to and including ex-soldiers returning home, the impact of drug dealing on the Black community, the role of vigilantes stepping up to protect the ghetto when police are absent or corrupt, and so on.  Normally, this genre of film takes itself deadly serious, but Wayans pours heaps and heaps of comedy into the mix, with running jokes, physical comedy, tons of sight gags, hilarious subversions of expectation, and even extremely base-level seriousness making the film as memorable as it is funny.
The real power of the film, however, comes in its lasting legacy in terms of how it served as a stylistic and generational bridge between the stars of the past and the promise of the future.  Keenen Ivory Wayans pays direct homage to the past by including some of the biggest names from the Blaxploitation era in key roles, and he uses the rest of the casting as an opportunity to not only showcase the talents of his vast family, but also open doors for a wealth of hilarious up and comers (many of whom are still working to this day).  The issues that plagued the Blaxploitation era are given a modern day equivalent, with drugs and sexual exploitation replaced with the embracing of hip-hop and gangster culture, but this substitution does not cheapen the strength of the narrative, despite the film’s comedic intentions.  The film is even deceptively poignant in the way that it exposes systematic oppression and police corruption.
In terms of production value, everything is more than acceptable, but from what I can surmise, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka wasn’t created to be a cinematic masterpiece.  The main aim of the film is clearly humor, and Keenen Ivory Wayans obliterates the bullseye he targeted.  The music cues all work, even the ones that are direct references to films of the past, and even some of those cues are used for humorous sight gags.  Wardrobe-wise, the film is surprisingly strong, with the costuming providing memorable outfits from the modern era, Blaxploitation era, and even a few ridiculous over-the-top costumes (including those outrageous goldfish platforms).
Keenen Ivory Wayans definitely had a lot on his plate as the writer and director of the film, but all of those obligations didn’t take away from his ability to play a comically inept version of a leading man with pinpoint precision.  Ja’net Dubois takes the trope of protective mother to new and outrageous heights, while Dawnn Lewis plays the damsel and distress with incredibly comedic nuance.  Bernie Casey is too cool for school, which makes his sharp one-liners and punchlines even funnier due to their curveball-esque delivery.  Isaac Hayes, Jim Brown, Antonio Fargas and Steve James are all able to take character aspects that made their careers and flip them on their ears, turning them into jokes without them feeling like they are the butt of said jokes.  John Vernon brings a sense of gravitas to his antagonist position, but like everyone else in the film, he manages to keep it humorous without going too ridiculous... instead, he allows the ridiculousness to come from Damon Wayans and Kadeem Hardison as his henchmen.  The list of cameo appearances reads like its own solid comedy film, with the likes of Clarence Williams III, Clu Gulager, John Witherspoon, David Alan Grier, Eve Plumb, Robin Harris, Kim Wayans, Nadia Wayans, Hawthorne James, Gary Owens, Tony Cox and more popping up, and even Robert Townsend and Peggy Lipton providing uncredited roles.
While it’s true that the comedy films of the Wayans family can be divisive in terms of reception, it’s hard to argue against I’m Gonna Git You Sucka being a classic.  The film opened many doors for Keenen Ivory and the rest of his family, and with his next project being the culturally iconic In Living Color, it seemed like the sky was the limit for his family.  As we stand thirty-plus years removed from this declaration, it’s impressive to see that the Wayans family is still rising.

Quarantine Fic Rec List Part 1
Since we’re all bored/stressed in quarantine, I thought I’d do a couple of rec lists. For this one I’m mostly doing some very well written but more unusual fics that you might not have come across before. I’ve listed the fandom and ships for each.
So Much More Than That by brocanteur (complete | 4,005 | T | Mean Girls; Regina George/Cady Heron )
"And she missed Cady Heron. She missed her and blamed her for everything." Post-film.

Once Around the Block by ecouterbien (complete | 1,134 | M | The Drop; Bob Saginowski/Nadia Dunne)
She was shaking when he let her out of the bar, and it wasn’t because of the cold. It wasn’t even a long walk to her house, a block and a half at most, but it was the longest walk she ever remembered taking. She counted every breath, every footstep, all the time listening for his steps on the sidewalk behind her. He wouldn’t just let her go like that, would he? Not after what she’d seen him do.

The Arcana, but it’s high school band
No one asked for it, but I’m gonna do it anyway.
Julian
He plays alto saxophone
Knows all the meme songs
Sits on the same band bus as the drumline bc he’s a rowdy motherfucker
100% participates in all the weird band traditions
You hear Careless Whisper from across the field? That’s him. It’s always him.
The upperclassman who asks an underclassman questions about what they’re supposed to do
Got the Twinkletoes award his freshman year (award for worst marcher, unsure if any band other than my own does that)
Nadia
She is so definitely drum major
And also band president
And a squad leader
One of the most popular girls in band
Sits on the drumline band bus to maintain some semblance of order there
Is the upperclassmen that gives the freshman everything they’ll need for band camp on the first day
Plays clarinet during concert season
Homecoming Queen her senior year
Lucio
Definitely was a trumpet player
Not necessarily a good one but a trumpet player nonetheless
He graduated but was band president beforehand
Was the upperclassman that was “never wrong” despite being very clearly wrong on some occasions
Would not have been a good drum major
Led the band in all their weird traditions while he was there
Still shows up to band functions occasionally
Homecoming King his senior year
Asra
I’m so torn between whether he’s a flute or a trombone player for concert season
He has the benevolent yet mischievous energy of a flute
Yet he somehow also has the chaotic energy of a trombone
He’s on the same band bus as the band director so he can get some sleep on the bus
Is just a total memelord
You thought Julian knew the meme songs? Asra knows more of them
Got Best Rookie award his freshman year
He’s in color guard
Muriel
Definitely a flute player
One of very few quiet underclassmen
Doesn’t participate in weird band traditions
Underclassman who says he hates band and is going to quit
Then he doesn’t quit
Portia
She plays tuba
Is on the band bus without the director or the drumline to cause mischief of her own accord
Underclassman whose friends are all upperclassman
Misses the seniors from the years before
Leads the band in cheers at football games
Definitely gets squad leader as an upperclassman
Receives the Best Senior Player award her senior year
Gets t-shirts for herself and the other tubas that say “toot that tuba” on them

B Movie - Main 6 + MC Headcanons
So I just watched the first episode of AHS: 1984 with my Mom so I wanted to write headcanons of the main cast in a shitty B movie scenario
Also, everyone is, like, college-aged in this, so age gaps won't be fucking with my vision
Julian is the one who finds out about Camp Vesuvia, and his sister, Portia, is the first one he conscripts to be a counselor with him
She says it's a terrible idea, and it is, but it's 1984, and money is scarce, and she decides that it might not be a terrible way to spend her summer
She hits up her friend, MC, and pitches it as this great getaway for, in her words, "booze, babes, and money." Portia convinces them to try and snag a couple other people, if they can
They're fairly easily convinced, and they manage to snag their best friend, Asra, and a nature loving bud of theirs, Muriel
Portia invites Nadia, and from there, they pile into Julian's standard 80s van, filled to the brim with pot, and they're off to Camp Vesuvia
Lucio, comic relief as ever, is already there when they arrive, in booty shorts and a cutoff counselor shirt (think Johnny Depp from Nightmare on Elm Street)
For plot, he and Nadia went/go to the same university and are former partners, he's not-so-silently pining while she's over it
They learn from Lucio that the guy who owns the place, some guy called Valerius, is in the town not too far from camp getting some last minute supplies, so he takes them on the "grand tour"
The kids aren't due for another three days, so it'll mostly be setup - and sex, mostly
So, the MC has the choice to do as such with one of the Main 6, up to them, and that's when the first weird thing happens
They hear a truck, and footsteps, and the MC isn't happy with it, and they stop doing the diddly do, and the LI calls out, miraculously not having heard anything
They rejoin the group, regardless, and MC only feels worse when Lucio starts telling the story of the camp
"A couple of kids, five in total, were in the lake, chilling, when suddenly, one of them snapped, killing the rest. The kid was brought in, and no one knows what really happened to them...or the bodies."
Nadia rolls her eyes and tells him to stop trying to scare everyone, but looking at the lake, with Lucio insisting it's real...
It's a little much
MC sneaks off to the showers with their lover, and we're given the first shot of the killer here, but no one dies (MC is not virgin final person)
Back in the girls' cabin, everyone has gathered to drink and smoke, in spite of the "no purpling" rule
Portia asks about the owner, when they'll meet him, and Lucio tells her about how weird he was, for the plot
Julian makes a joke, that class clown boi, and tries to scare everyone. It doesn't really work, but everyone's already kind of on edge. Woods are scary, especially at night
Muriel is quiet, sticking close to MC and Asra, not too keen on meeting others. Nadia is tired, saying she has a headache and lies down. Portia is smoking and drinking, trying not to think about outside, and Julian is living in the aftershocks of his dumb joke. He might apologize, but it's the 80s and guys don't apologize in movies. Lucio is loud and laughing and so frightened inside, and Asra is just trying to have a good time.
MC won't stop looking at the door, anxiety gnawing at them, and Nadia, from the bed, sees out the window, and asks about the strange little shack on the water's edge
Lucio says it's Valerius' cabin, that they weren't allowed in there, and Julian immediately suggests going in there. Portia and Asra and Lucio agree while Nadia and Muriel think it's a bad idea.
It is a bad idea and MC manages to convince them not to go
As soon as they fall asleep, though, Portia and Asra are sneaking out to go check it out, because when are they going to have another chance to do this?
First death is off screen. It's Portia. Asra screams and we see him running from the killer. Portia's body falls into the frame and the killer chases Asra down.
Julian, half drunk, half asleep, has just left the dude cabin, looking for Portia. He hears Asra yelling and kind of sees him running, and then he doesn't hear him anymore
He thinks it's strange, and goes to investigate.
Julian books it as soon as he finds Asra's body, right into the boys cabin, where he finds Lucio and Muriel, the latter of which was already awake
Freaking out, he wakes Lucio up, crying and sputtering already, so they can freak out together, before Muriel tells him he's dumb and that this is dumb
Julian barricades the door, and the killer breaks a window before the screen cuts to Nadia
Nadia, with a headache, wakes up in her room, thinking the screams were part of her nightmare. She is surprised no one else is in her cabin, and makes her way to the bathrooms
She hears yelling from the cabin and rolls her eyes, thinking they were being stupid and partying or something
Standard bathroom shot death hear, she washes her face, killer comes in, she locks herself in bathroom, then dies
MC has been in the Rec Center, unable to sleep, for most of the night, sort of chilling
Here they find the newspaper article from years ago, and whoopdy doo, it's got mysterious Valerius' name in it
They mildly freak out, and the killer is shown in the window, but only for a moment
They make to head back to their cabin, but stop part of the way, staring at the water
They swear they see something
But they really hear screams coming from the guy cabin, so they book it , throwing the door open and finding Julian dead and the back door thrown wide open
They scream, covering their mouth and turning to go the way they came
Instead, they're knocked over the head and everything goes black
They wake up, head aching, staring into the dead green eyes of Muriel's body, and they hyperventilate into the gag in their mouth
All their friends lie dead beside them, all five of the people they came here with
They're grabbed by the back of their neck, crying and hyperventilating, and the killer mutters in their ear, "Jesus, shut up already."
They sniffle and furrow their brow, and the killer stands before them, tilting their head to the side
"I couldn't finish what I started that day, you know." They smile, inhuman and angry, "Then my old friend decided to reopen this place and..."
So, long story short, saving you a monologue, Valdemar and their three little friends were trying to sacrifice Valerius to the Devil as kids, they're kind of obsessed with death now, so they killed MC's friends and are about to use Lucio to summon the devil. We also get a shot of Valerius, dead out in his jeep. We also get to see the three followers, Vlastomil, Volta, and Vulgora because they were involved in the newspaper
Again, long story short, Valdemar tries to succeed, they kill MC, and Lucio is very nearly killed as well, but he's our final person! Yay!

The Democrats had a debate on Feb. 7 . At Andrew Yang’s first chance to speak, he rehashed his stump speech. I mean, c’mon give us something new. There really seemed to be a restrained nervousness on the stage that night. Klobachar seemed too needy but she got great reviews. Biden called Buttigieg ‘a friend ‘ a couple of times. Mayor Pete did quite well. ** Deval Patrick is out** Andrew Yang is out.**Michael Bennet is out** Another debate was on Feb. 19.** Bloomberg/Yang? Is this true?

The Oscars were held Feb. 9. Brad Pitt and the production design team won for Once upon a Time in Hollywood. Woo Hoo! Word is that Pitt has hired a speech writer to write his acceptances. JoJo Rabbit won for adapted screenplay. Little Women won for Little Women and Toy Story 4 for animated film. Laura Dern won best supporting actress. Renee Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix too home the top actor prizes. Parasite surprised everybody and won best pic and got Bong Joon Ho a best director statue. My best dressed were Billy Porter, Antonio Banderes and his date, Janelle Monae ( her opening seemed to make some in the audience uncomfortable), Robert DeNiro, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Geena Davis, Regina King, Charlize Theron, Adam Driver, Joanne Tucker, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kathy Bates, I don’t know what Kristen Wiig and Idina Menzel were thinking. Wiig always has a unique style so I have to admire that. ** The ratings were down. I have heard people saying they just don’t watch award shows or late night shows anymore because they are afraid things will get political. Funny, that is part of the reason I watch!

Van Jones was right when he said we shouldn’t give Trump any press coverage for a week. He would hate it. Trump loves the old adage of bad publicity is better than none because he just must have attention. It would never work for they just can’t resist.** Joe Mcguire is out after he warned of Russian interference. If you want to keep your job in this administration, do not tell the truth. Now at the Department of National Intelligence is Johnny Mcentee , a 29 year old former football player who worked on the campaign. He immediately called department heads and said he wanted lists of never Trumpers in their offices. ** And who is in charge of weeding out the people in the government who may be disloyal to Scary Clown? Well, it is none other than Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice Clarence. She calls it the list of snakes. Trump is now saying he even wants liberal judges on the Supreme Court to recuse themselves when it comes to “Trump related cases”. It just keeps getting worse.
*****
Trump had fun in India. He should, his business has 5 projects going there right now worth 1.5 billion.
*****
Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape and criminal sexual assault. He was not found guilty of all the charges that included predatory behavior.

Andrew Yang is a new correspondent at CNN. He tells us that he is getting word from former donors that Bloomberg is calling those big donors. Allegedly he is telling them they do not have to donate to his campaign because he can afford his own campaign but he still won’t forget them. He would like them to save their money and not give money to other democrats running either.** And I am so sick of talking heads trying to tell us to play it safe. We are not as stupid as we look, thank you!! ** Now there is a firestorm about Bernie telling the world that the education program that Castro implemented was a good thing. I understand the anger and it could not have come at a worse time and he did it to himself. BUT..  We are adults and we have to be able to talk about things as they really are, not in sound bites. Castro sucked and history teaches us that bad people do good things occasionally and good people do bad things once in a while. ** It seems that everyone was in agreement that we would all gather behind the winner of the democratic campaign to beat Trump. Suddenly when it could be Bernie, everybody is bitching.
*****
This month held 2 more Democratic debates. The Nevada debate got pretty heated. I see that Mayor Pete and Bloomberg are lefties (left handed that is). Pete always looked poised and articulate which I appreciate and he got in a good one when he mentioned that the party should choose someone who is actually a democrat.  Bernie seemed a little rattled by that. Later Pete really dressed down Amy Klobuchar and made himself look like a dick. Joe Biden jumped in with his credits occasionally but often seemed a bit lost. He slammed back that they were all talking about the health care plane he helped to create and that he himself had dealt with the Mexican President. His name came up after it was mentioned that Amy could not remember the President’s name. The gloves were off with Bloomberg as Elizabeth Warren called him out on Billionaires and NDA’s. I loved the interaction but realistically Mr. Mike can’t just release people from agreements they made in an NDA, especially if it did not involve him. Bloomberg sounded pompous and clueless about the world outside of his company. He got a moan when he said he couldn’t exactly use turbo tax and when he said he may have told a few jokes that women didn’t like. He brushed off his taxes much like Trump does. The former mayor of NY called out socialists as communists. Klobuchar had the best comeback of the night when she was told her health care plan could fit on a post it. She proclaimed that the post it was invented in her state of Minnesota. Again, there were people shouting from the audience as Joe tried to talk. C’mon give everybody an equal chance.
*****
The South Carolina debate was fiery as well. The CBS debate was hosted by Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell. Bloomberg was booed right off the bat about Russia helping Bernie but he late had many cheers. He and Biden and Steyer had some real support there. Tom Steyer was actually quite impressive and seemed well spoken.  He was the only one who brought up the impeachment. He had a great point that we all know that republicans who did not convict Trump are complicit in the Russian meddling. Then he ruined it all by being alarmist with his fear. He warned us off the former republican and the socialists. I loved Bernie’s ideas about small business’s getting in on the marijuana business and not letting big corporations taking it over. He is also the only one in debates that I have seen consistently bring up Native Americans.  Biden again kept jumping in to tell us that he did this or that. Amy disagreed about a bill he claimed to have written. Warren said “dig in” numerous times. She went for the jugular with Bloomberg when she said a former female employee of his said to “kill it” in response to her pregnancy. He denied it but it sure is memorable. She did make great points that he has given much money to Linsey Graham’s campaign as well as other republican runs including against her. BTW he also gave 2.3 mil to Rick Snyder, the Gov of Michigan after the water crisis was well known.  I love that Amy is always saying that we shouldn’t fight amongst ourselves but she just does not have the votes so she needs to go. Bernie got some boos about guns for he seems the softest in that area.

Just think what the 400 million that Bloomberg spent on his campaign could have done for the debt of the average American.  Instead of a campaign for a presidency that he can’t win, he could have helped so many get a leg up.

The final Criminal Minds has aired. CBS often aired double episodes which made it seem like they really wanted to get rid of it. Kirsten Vangsness and Erica Messer wrote the final episode which seemed to give special attention to Penelope and Reid as they were the originals. Where was Reid’s new girlfriend?  I was hoping to see Shemar Moore but it was great to see Reisgraf and Howell which are old favorites.

The Arcana Characters as Marching Band Members
Julian: undoubtedly a tenor saxophone, he just loves trying to seduce everyone but sometimes just ends up honking at them since he’s a little new to the instrument
Asra: he’s on bells, the sweet boy. He just loves how beautiful and peaceful they sound (but he can still play them angrily to get his frustration out somehow?? Nobody quite knows how he pulls it off but scientists have been studying it for quite some time)
Nadia: was a majorette since she was a rookie, and a damn good one at that, but somehow she ended up being drum major. Probably because she decided everyone else was too incompetent and fuck it why not, she still gets to snag that baton during games
Lucio: TRUMPET PLAYER and really obnoxious about it too. You know the meme with trumpet boy playin at the girl with her hand over her ears? That’s him @ the rest of the band. He desperately wanted to be drum major but took a fat L (still salty 30 years later)
Portia: drum line, she loves getting out her anger on the bass drum and prizes herself for carrying that giant thing around even though she’s so small. Totally the strongest lady in the man, and has the best table-top marching
Muriel: Librarian, he’s happy to set out yard markers and the ladder as well as pass out music but he doesn’t fancy performing for large, loud crowds. He may not have much musical aptitude either but he’s surprising organized and always bops to the band on the sidelines (very low key though, of course. Can’t have people looking at him too much)
Volta: tried to play the tuba but was kicked out for trying to eat it “I thought you said it was a TUNA not a TUBA, and it does look oh so much like a cornucopia...” still comes to every performance and raids the concession stand while cheering on the band
Vulgora: was in the drum line too, until they got too enthusiastic during the fight song and broke through all of their drums “SEE MY STRENGTH AND COWER *INSERT OPPOSING TEAM/BAND*”
Vlastomil: nobody really knows why he’s at band camp, he can be found trying the use the flags or batons to dig worms out of the ground, gets kicked out every year but somehow sneaks back in...
Valdemar: the band camp nurse, is stilghtly disappointed at the lack of plague but relishes the heat sickness people sometimes get, thinks they should get paid more since they have to endure such boring work (sprained ankles, knee problems, back issues, etc)
Valerius: the band director who never actually played a band instrument, he only played the viola when he was in 5th grade and thinks he knows more about music than Ira Gershwin or Leonard Bernstein because of it. Everyone hates him, and the band only ever listens to Nadi anyway so it works

Nadia Lochard, the coordinator for civil protection in Haiti’s western department, said authorities were showing camp dwellers how to properly tie up their tents before evacuating. There were no immediate reports of any deaths. Vincent on Saturday, damaging homes, knocking out power and blocking roads with flooding and debris. Tomas was located 265 miles (425 km) west of St Lucia, and was moving west at 12 mph (19 kph), the Miami-based hurricane center said. “We have plans to evacuate the camps but we won’t be able to evacuate everybody.” “We have launched an appeal for voluntary evacuation, particularly in the camps,” said Alta Jean-Baptiste, the director of the Haiti’s Civil Protection Office. In Haiti, the government and international aid groups are already struggling with a major cholera epidemic that has killed at least 330 people and sickened over 4,700 people.Īs Tomas churned over the open Caribbean sea, officials appealed to Haitians in tent camps to start evacuating, encouraging them to travel to the homes of family or friends. STARCRASH (1978) – Episode 169 – Decades Of Horror 1970s
“You know, my son, I wouldn’t be Emperor of the Galaxy if I didn’t have some powers at my disposal. Imperial Battleship, halt the flow of time!” Yup. That could come in handy. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out Starcrash (1978), starring Caroline Munro, Christopher Plummer, Marjoe Gortner, David Hasselhoff, and Joe Spinell. What’s not to like?

An outlaw smuggler and her alien companion are recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to rescue his son and destroy a mysterious superweapon designed by the evil Count Zarth Arn
Director: Luigi Cozzi (credited in the US as Lewis Coates)
Writers. Luigi Cozzi & Nat Wachsberger (screenplay); R.A. Dillon (additional dialogue)
Music by: John Barry
Selected cast:
Caroline Munro as Stella Star
Candy Clark as Stella Star (voice) (uncredited)
Marjoe Gortner as Akton
Judd Hamilton as Elle
Hamilton Camp as Elle (voice)
David Hasselhoff as Prince Simon
Christopher Plummer as The Emperor
Joe Spinell as Count Zarth Arn
Robert Tessier as Thor
Nadia Cassini as Corelia
Salvatore Baccaro as Neanderthal Man (uncredited)
Omero Capanna as Spaceship Guard (uncredited)
Hélène Chauvin as Amazon (uncredited)
Bill picked this one and he remembers originally liking Starcrash a lot more than he does this time around. Caroline Munro is still fetching, even though Candy Clark dubs her, but every actor seems to be acting in a different movie. There is a colorful, comic-book style to this weird oddball movie, but as Bill points out, sometimes you can’t go back again.
Jeff has been wanting to see Starcrash since Decades of Horror 1980s covered Maniac, another film starring Caroline Munro and Joe Spinell. Jeff sees the obvious similarities to the recently released Star Wars (1977), but the bad dialogue and long, drawn-out fight scenes cause Starcrash to… crash. Doc remembers great-looking stills in magazines of the time, but their quality does not lead to a good film. The dubbing is laughably bad and the movie is just awful. Still, there is a sort of weird charm to it.
If you have a hankering for late-70s, cheesy, space opera, Starcrash is available to stream with ads from multiple services, and on physical media as a Shout Factory! Blu-ray.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule, chosen by Chad, will be H. G. Wells’ Empire of the Ants (1977), starring Joan Collins and Robert Lansing.

With Nano’s release comes loads of drama. However, he isn’t the only thing on Guzman’s mind. Also, Polo nearly kills again.

It’s Not Easy Having A Good Time: Omar, Ander, Lu, Rebeca, Cayetena, Guzmán, Nadia, Polo, Nano, Sandra, Samuel
It’s Halloween, and to help her daughter make friends, Sandra invites Rebeca’s entire grade. That doesn’t go over well, nor Sandra pushing the idea that Samuel and Rebeca are closer than they actually are. Yet, with Nano causing a ruckus at school, and Guzmán still unable to get his hands on him, he pushes everyone to go to Rebeca’s party. Even though Rebeca has issues with Lu, her new friend Cayetena, and hasn’t barely spoken a word to him.
Speaking of Cayetena, someone finally discovers her truth, and it is Rebeca. The one who she calls Vulgar so often. Yet, between Lu in one corner, and convincing Polo she is in his corner, she builds up a safety net just in case she ever falls from grace. No clear signs, however, if the rope will be tight when she slips or is pushed.
Leaving Omar and Ander. At first, it seemed Omar and Ander’s main issue with Ander dealing with Polo’s reveal and being tortured what to do about it. Yet, it seems the bigger issue might be seeing Omar too much now. He is very domestic, sounds a bit like Lu, hence why she may like him, and in his freedom, he exposes someone Ander doesn’t seem attracted to.
But, he doesn’t want to trade in this journey he can now be on. For while, yes, Nadia is now the child stuck in the shop, stuck with Yusef and their mom, there is a “Better you than me” attitude. At least since Omar had suffered in silence so long.
Smiling Makes My Face Ache: Ander, Omar, Lu, Guzman, Carla, Samuel, Nadia, Yusef, Valerio, Rebeca, Polo, Cayetena
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
During the party, as you can imagine, things aren’t that fun and happy for our leads. Ander is unhappy since Omar has gone camp and had them go as Frank N Furter and Rocky. Which, for Ander, is a bit too camp and leans towards a side of queerness he isn’t comfortable with. Leading to Omar thinking they are at the beginning of the end.
Luckily, he isn’t alone in facing the end of a relationship. Lu is outright broken up with, and the devastation is swift. Making it where Valerio finally has the opening he has long waited for and makes his move – One that is discovered by Samuel. Someone who questions Carla’s involvement with the money that was given to free Nano. Which she attempts to make seem like it was her doing, her idea, but he reads her. He has taken such good note of her patterns that she feels naked in a public space and is forced to retreat.
Speaking of feeling seen, though Yusef has been aware that Omar may have had desires for men, Rebeca sending a picture to Nadia, and Yusef seeing her phone, of Omar as Frank N Furter is a bomb he wasn’t expecting. Maybe one similar to his oldest daughter’s actions when she left and seeing the life she decided to live? Either way, it leads to him speaking on how happy he is Nadia is a good girl and puts a weight on her similar to what Omar felt when Nadia was trying to fit in with the rich.
It isn’t all bad, however. Polo and Cayetena grow closer. They even go to the party as a couple. Mind you, an inappropriate costume of JFK and Jackie O after JFK was assassinated, but they aren’t American so why would they care? They just want to be fashionable yet dark, and Cayetena just wants a rich boyfriend to help legitimize her dream. One she talks to with Rebeca who avoids revealing her truth, but only because she wants to understand the lie.
Don’t Dream It. Be it: Nadia, Guzman, Carla, Samuel, Rebeca, Cayetena, Nano, Ander, Polo
Despite Rebeca and Cayetena have their heart to heart, she sees an opportunity to further shield herself by reporting Nano coming to Rebeca’s party. Now, why is he there? Well, if you remember, Nano used to be into some seedy activities in season one, and it seems Sandra was one of the higher-ups he worked for. So, with that in mind, he doesn’t want Samuel involved with Sandra or Rebeca. However, Rebeca assures Nano that Samuel isn’t a pawn for a scheme and, despite how he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings, she is looking out for him.
But that isn’t enough for him so, after overseeing Carla and Samuel talk, he goes after her. Which leads to Samuel beating the hell out of him before Guzmán shows up. And that sucks for Guzmán since Nadia just rejected him, out of fear of how being with him could break her father’s heart, so he is quite upset and could use an outlet.
One that nearly was going to be Polo, since Ander grows tired of their secret more and more, but that doesn’t happen. However, in a fit of rage, Polo does nearly strike Ander with a bottle of alcohol. Yet, the rage he feels, it dissipates before he can strike and Ander, surprisingly, is forgiving despite a known murderer nearly striking him. Possibly with the intention to kill
Highlights
Nadia & The Pressure She Is Under
While Yusef is still a bigot, his actions help you understand the immense pressure Nadia operates on. She is the youngest of three, and with the oldest daughter gone, middle child, the only son, gay, she is the last hope. She is seen as the one who determines if there were two bad apples or if Iman and Yusef were simply bad parents. An idea which is hard to force your parents to face, so Nadia would rather sacrifice her joy to make her parents happy.
It, in a way, shows how the immigrant experience, no matter the country, is universal. While the children love and want to partake in all the opportunities their parents afford them, they are given their own form of oppression or lack of mobility. Maybe not of the same variety as their parents, but they can’t experience the full privileges they are supposed to have.
Lu’s Low Point
Between losing Guzmán and the discovery of her relations with her brother, Lu is hitting the ground and she isn’t running. Luckily, with her relationship to Omar, who she strangely accepts as a whole, she didn’t land on her face. Also, with Cayetena having her back, she’ll have someone to pick her up. Never mind the grandest of distractions since Cayetena has Polo, and that means, if Lu wants to be petty, she has something to shove into Carla’s face.
But, what matters most here is Lu can move on from Guzmán, hopefully not be wrapped up in her brother’s drama, and perhaps have a non-romantic storyline again.
Realizing Ander Liked Omar’s Unavailability
Being unavailable sometimes makes people more attractive. Look at the Samuel situation for Carla and Rebeca. Carla likes when Samuel gets machismo and stands his ground, and that innocence, that pushes away Rebeca’s lifestyle, draws her to him. However, when it comes to Omar, in his freedom comes a new person Ander seemingly is struggling to love. Maybe because Omar’s truth is more fluid than Ander’s and Ander liked the quiet, brooding, sort of dangerous, masculine vibe Omar formerly had? Perhaps even liked the chase and the rare moments they had, for it made those moments special in comparison to now where Omar is there and there is this guilt involved.
Because, think about it, Ander pushed Omar to be out, open, and didn’t calculate a safety net. And while, yeah, Omar getting kicked out doesn’t directly deal with his sexuality, you can’t deny it wasn’t a factor. How else would you explain Nadia getting away with so much but Omar getting kicked out for going out once and leaving money in the register?
Carla
Has Carla become a favorite amongst the cast? No. But, Samuel has livened her up a little bit. Primarily in helping you understand how diverse the elite women are on this show. For while there are those like Rebeca and Lu, very extroverted, judgey, and how they come at people from either being old money or new money, then there is Carla. She leans more towards Cayetena’s persona, but quiet about her power.
Mind you, the kind of power which is more so exhibited in sex, followed up by her financial power, if need be, but there is something about Samuel reading her which is noteworthy. Maybe it is because she feels seen by him and, as we’ve seen repeatedly this season, feeling seen is frightening to most of the elite. After all, they pay so much, whether legit elite or like Cayetena, to put on a persona, that to be stripped bare, and not for sex, is frightening. It may even lead, in Carla’s case, her feeling predictable and boring. Two things she doesn’t want to seem like, hence her attraction to extroverted and intriguing people.
On The Fence
Could We Get More From Rebeca?
While Rebeca is a nice alternative to the rest of the “Marchioness,” she feels rather basic. Maybe due to her suffering from, like most, dealing with the weight that is being a love interest before individual development? However, things could turn around. With her mother being connected to the troubles Nano was facing in season one, that could push her story further. Also, with some hint of what happened to her dad, that can be explored.
But, we’ve seen this before. A character who, like Nadia and Lu, has a lot of potential but still finds herself caught up and the back and forth of the latest relationship drama. So here is hoping her look and attitude won’t be the sole thing that allows her to stand out still.

Elite: Season 2, Episode 5 “63 Hours Missing” – Recap, Review (with Spoilers) With Nano’s release comes loads of drama. However, he isn’t the only thing on Guzman’s mind. Also, Polo nearly kills again.
