HTRK - Marry Me Tonight⁠ ⁠ @psychic9to5club @ghostly #htrk #ghostly #ghostlyinternational ⁠ ⁠ HTRK (pronounced "hate rock") is one of those bands you either already know about, or never would. They've been around for a while now and have quite a rabid following of people who adore their super lofi post-punk music, but they've also absolutely been through the wringer of life and have succeeded despite just about every great thing that's happened to them being taken away (until recently, that is). They were originally a trio out of Melbourne making v moody tracks with an 808 dialed all the way as slow as the tempo knob would allow and self-styled post-punk bass and vocals over the top. The caught the ear of famous Australian musician Rowland S. Howard from The Birthday Party and he worked with them in the studio to make the album you're looking at right now. It's ethereal, it's dark as hell, it's somehow entirely original despite taking many influences and cues from bands of yore, and it's one of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments that will, unfortunately, never quite be the same. Rowland died from cancer and liver failure at the end of the year and their bassist, Sean Stewart, died by suicide a few months later in early 2010. They've continued their work as a duo and are putting out amazing music, though it's certainly a bit different than what you'll find here (or on earlier albums, for that matter). ⁠ ⁠ This one will always hold a very special place in my heart.
